JFOREWORDO Tbe time has arrived for the issue of another number of the School Magazine. I gather: from rhe Editor that there has been no lack of contributions-a good s1qn that interest is bei11g maintained in school activities.

Far removed as we are from the scene of conflict in the present slru9gle, our school life gars on in much the same wa;1 as in peace time. For this blessing we are ven1 thankful , but we have constantly in ouc thoughts those lr-ss fortunate schools situated in the battle-area. _, Some have suFF,ered grievously already, but we !wow that all are showing that indomitable spirit which is leading Britain a,~d her Allies lo victory over barbarism. We are constantly receiving tidmgs of our Old Bnys-always a great pleasure to the Masters and the present boys. To date, two Old Boys have been decorated for gallantry on actice srcvice in the present war: ; we are cery proud of them and wish them good luck in ÂŁheir future endeavuurs.

Although the war has not very seriously affected life at Queen's, every student realises that he is an eye-witness of the most ghastly trJgedy in human affairs.

We are sure that victory will be ours in the end ; but that does not in ;1ny way relieve us from the heavy responsibility of doing our share to set right the .wrongs Germany committed twenty-five years ago. It is not too much of a boast to say that Collegians will continue to ennoble the already noble tradition of Queen's, won by three-quarters of a century of patient and glorious service.

But to return to our Magazine; we have attempted to m:ikc this issue interesting to all the boys.

Contributions vary from atticles on nonsense to articles of deep an'd profound thought, from parodies to poems in French. No doubt they will have their special appe::il to different types of students.

Our readers will notice a conspicuous absence of pictures. The prohibitive cost of making blocks left us no choice in the matter.

The Games Club does not h:ippen to possess an inexba..istible supply of funds and your humble Editor. despite his acquaintJnce with the Virrils and the Caesars and with the Calculus, has not as yet discovered a scnnd formula for the correct falsification of accounts. We have so much to learn ! It hJs not been possible to inciude the Junior Section. but several conrriburions hy the younger boys have been prir.ted.

THE declaration of war found three of our masters in England ; thanks to the Navy, they are back with us , safe and sound-Mr. Pilgrim came back in September, Mr. Weston in Ja·nuary. Mr. Drayton in February.

Mr. C. E. H amshe re. a new assistant master, has arrived from Jamaica. He comes in place of Mr. Da rtford whom we lost last year. We are glad to say that, lik e Mr. Dartford , he is becomin g very popular with the boys, and as he is chiefly lo be 'blam,ed' for bringing in an o ther game- hockey - a nd so hind erin g our work, he should become even more pop ular later on wh en we really begin to play hockey.

QUR annual Sp~ech Day was postponed from the Autumn to the Spring Term owing to the late arrival of prizes and certificates. There was the usual large attendance. The need for a larger There were ball was obvious. slight interruptions by the boys who were very much crowded together in a corner at the back of the hall. We ask our patrons to tolerate our shortcomings until we get a new building.

In his Report for the ye:ir 1938--1939, the Principal said that there was an upward trend in numbers. This was probably the result of a decision to award a Junior Scholarship and three Junior Exhibitions. All the boys underwent the usual medical examination, and recommendations were passed on to parents and guardians.

Twenty-nine out of thirty boys passed the School Certificate examination. 1 2 qualifying for the London Matriculation. Twentyfour of thirt y-two boys pa3sed tb~ Lower Certificate. Eleven of fifteen passed the London Higher

School Certificate; two candidates 1 qualifying for exemptions from 2. the Inter B.A., and one from the Inter B.Sc., examinations. One 3. pupil passed his 'referred' subject I of Biology in the First Medical 4.

Examination.

The first three 5. places in the Guian:i Scholarship examination were secured by our his boys.

Throughout the year, enthusiasm for games never flagged. And although our achievements were not particu11rly outstanding, there was no reason to be ashamed of our performances.

After the serious business was finished, the evening was "wound up" by a "Prelude to the Cycle of Spring.:' In this 'prelude' there ; 6. was not much scope for origin· · ality and high acting ability.

THIRD .M EETING On Friday, December the 1st, at 8 p.m. there was a debate.

The subject was "That Science is as destructive as it is constructive.' ' proposed by Messrs. Nicholson, Burnham a·nd Jarvis. and opposed

by Messrs. Brassi~gton, Brown and Francis.

Mr. H. Ann;:inrnnthodo was chairman. Very sou nd and inter· . es ting _ arguments were put forward , and members of the audi· cnce made remarks on the subject.

The result of the voting was that the opposers won the debate.

On the 10th May, a joint meeting was held with the Science Society. Mr. H. Annamuntbodo delivered a talk on " To Kaieteur and Back." The t:1lk was well illustrated . with pictures and sketches. The Chairman for the evening was Mr. H. 0. E. Barker.

FIFTH MEETING On the 17th of ~vby, at 8 p.m.

R€v. W. R. Welton-Ward delivrred a talk on "Paris." The talk was pleasant and instructive, and Mr. Watd answered a number of questions which were asked. Mr. Brown was Chairman.

SIXTH MEETING There was a deb;ite that "There should be no humanity in war," proposed by Messrs, Brassington, Burnham and Nicholson, and opposed by Messrs. Francis, Barker and Farley.

This time we h:id as judges M~ssrs. Brown and Johnson.

Mr. Annamunthodo was chairman. . The voting was very close, seven for the proposition and eight i'n favour of the opposition, and well over 20 other members seemed unable to "make up their minds."

The judges, however, said that the Proposition had won.

It will be notice·d that there were no meetings between November and May. Tbis is due to the fact that the Literary Society meetings are always held on Friday nights and during this term there were practices for the play, "Badgers Green. " on Friday nights. Again beth the college sports and Inter-Colkgiate Sports were held on Fridays of this term.

The average attendance during the year was 30. although the re are actually 60 members on roll.

The greatest respome is obtained when there is a c:!ebate. There were six meetings this year. Let' s hope there will be very many more next year.

the school year 1939-40, the Society continued to show steady progress, and we may safely say that the meetings have aroused mu~h interest in the school. Once agam we were fortunate enough to secure many interesting speakers.

The high-lights of the year were undoubtedly the visits to the Demerara Tobacco Factory and the Diamond Suglr Plantation , while we must not forget to men tion Dr. Clearkin' s most interesting lecture on Blood, which was accompanied by practical demonstrations.

In spite of our lo ~ses, during the summer term we bought sixty eggs from the " Gardens" and hatched them at College, thus giving the members and boys who were interested an opportunity to sec how the incubator worked.

But here again we did not achieve much success bcc1use only eighteen eggs hatched. \Ve now have a set of poultry from this hatching. We also have a pure breed leghorn cock and a few ordinary hens, some of their eggs are now in the incubator. During this term , the meetings held gav~ information as to th e formation of the chicken during incubaticn , selection and

care of hatching egg~, natural and artificial incubation, reasons for poor b atches and our expenses to date.

The members have gain ed some knowledge from this Section a nd we hope that more boys will join in o rder to keep it alive. They also extend their thanks to Mr. Bevis who has very keenly supervised their m,ovements and who has assured us that he would continue to do so as long as he has the support of the bo vs.

The rub lies in the fact that this healthy team-spirit is more evident among the smaller boys of our third and fourth elevens. than among the bigger boys of the House. The result is that these elevens obtain betcer results. and · in the case of our third eleven, remain unbeaten for the entire football season. At the House Social held in December, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

On behalf of the members, I must say that we ;ippreciate very much the keen interest taken by our house master in all house matters. His help and advice haveb een invaluable. and the House Committee and Sports Captain have discharged their duties very efficient! y during the year.

DOW) THIS last school-year has been one of increased progressa proud boast that is well-borne out by the fact that the platoon, was once again praised by the 'powers that be' for refusing to be eclipsed by any of the regular militia or police companies at the Church Parade on Armistice Day. or at the parade on the celebration -of the King's Birthday.

-At the beginning of the Autumn term 20 boys were recruited, while a dozen more were added at the end of the yeat. The new army drill was adopted, and this, with ,our increased strength, brought about many new ,promotions. A change was also made in the ·uniforms and the time of par;ide. the latter being from 3 to 4 o'clock instea·d of from 5 to 6. ·while khaki shirts were issued for training. the tuni(s being now oniy used for ceremonial parades.

While Lieut. Drayton was away in England, Lieut. Baldwin :icted for O.C. Cadets. Warrant Officer Smith of the Police Depot came up to instruct us in the new drill. and not onl y did he do so nry thoroughly, but just as thorough! y he revised our general efficiency. giving us that 'snap' which is usually only a~sociated with well-trained regulars. Guard of the enemy in the vicinity of Bel Air, and while they went in for further news of th'1 main enemy, our Advanced Guard quickly split into three and attacked the enemy Advanced Guard from the centre and the two flanks. The stupid concentration of the enemy (s ix policemen from the Depot-each representing at least half-a-dozen Germans) allowed the complete success of our manoeune. For though· the centre section was a·lmost wiped out, the flanking sections fell suddenly upon the enemy, killed most of them anc took the rest prisoners.

Meanwhile both our scouts had brought back full details of the main enemy. and our main body had come up. Matters were now taken our of our hands-and well - -let it suffi ce to say that no enemy now rcm:iins on the soil of British Guiana. For our success we thank W. 0. ·s Smit!-: and Hammond.

Instead of producing two or three brilliant batsmen and bowlers as in the pasr, we now have a large number of mediocre cricketers with one or two re;illy good ones. Another noticeable feature of our present cricket, is the lack of dependable bowl ers. and the increase in good batsmen.

Thus the superiori ty definitely li es with the batsman.. which w;is amply portrayeJ in our Garnett Cricket. \Vhereas we had some very good b;itting averages. only Chin and Croal showed up in bowling. the former CJpturing about 50 wkts. at a cost of a little O\'er IO runs :ipiece.

We had only one century in Garnett. by Ernest Parker in the last match against the D.C.C , but we had quite a few scores of owr 50 run s-Cro;i l 83. Dr.1 y ton 81.

ing to dampen his enjoyment of the game. 'Spa rks' is a very good bat now, but while his batting has improved , his bowling has fallen off, though it is still as accurate as ever. He is a brilliant field anywhere, especially on the boundary and in the slips. In 'Sparks', wh<> left school at the end of the year. we have lost a good sportsman and a fine cricketer.

Our bowling attack was quite steady through o ut, but the fielding was not quite as good as it could have been. F. Drayton was the most successful bowler capturing 3 wickets for 5 0 runs, J. Parker and L. Eytle took 2 wickets for 16 and 22 respectively, while E. Parker and J. Agard took I wicket for O and 15 respectively.

We were quite confident of making the Berbice score and on the same day we scored 12 7 for 3 wickets, G. Locd with a breezy 5 6. E. Parker 16. and F. Drayron j9 not out being the princip~l scorers. On the next day. however, we failed miserably :ind tbe rem::iining 7 wickets only added 22 runs. Drayton failed to add any to his score and the only batsman to give any opposition was J. Parker who wa·s 12 not our. We ended our first innings with 149 runs which cre::ited quite a sensation ::imong the Berbice crowd.

The bowling of the Berbice XI fell on the shoulders of King and 0. Bridgbassie who took 4 wickers for 5 8 and 5 6 respectively.

C.G.C., which we won 3-2. and one against the Y.M.C.A .. which we won easily 4-1. As these were the two strongest teams in the Sherlock Cup Competition, we entertained high hopes of winning the Cup. But alas. in the first match. we were knocked out by the Shamrock Club. which hid an admittedly weak team.

We had the terrible misfortune of finding three of our te:1m of five badly out of form on rhe same ni ght.

We lost 2-3. Lord and I won the two games but Carter. Phillips and Grannum were unsuccessful.

We also had our first Form Tournament. which Form V won easily. This competition brought many youngsters into the limelight. and we should be able to field two teams in ,he Competition next year.

Tab le-Tennis was _proclaimed a 1egular school game for its continuance.

We hope to have House Matches next year.

I must take the opportunity of thanking Mr. Cannon for kindly lending us his own table and for

his unstinting efforts as organiser and coach.

Unfortunately. I was unable to retain the Colony Championship, being knocked out in the semifinals for the Campbell Cup.

Sherlock Cup Team MR. CAMERON : A very steady player who has both attacking and defending strokes. Is an adept at the back-spin, and the back-hand driYc. and places the ball well.

L. F. ORA YTON : Our captain :>'.'Id ex-colony champion.

A very good pla yer whose chief assets are in his superb defence and his ability to spin the ball.

With the employment of more forceful shoes. however, he should again become a serious contender for the championship honours.

LORD : A most aggre3s1ve plaHr with terrific forehand and backhand smashes.

Like most smashers. he has his moods. but is much more consistent and accurate now than he was last year. Can spin the ball disconcertingly when be is hard-pressed.

OPEN TOURNAMENT During August and Septer.i.ber.

1940 three members of the Chess Club and one old member entered a Simultaneous Tournament and a second-cla'ss tournament organised by the Citizens' Chess Club.

The entrants were very successful.

In the Simultaneous Tonrnament R. E. G. Farley gained two prizes -one offered to the player who won the shortest game, and the other to the player ·who g:iined the highest percentage of games.

In the Second Class Tournament, H. 0. E. Barker won the first prize winning all his g:imes, and R. E. G. Farley won the second prize. losing to H. 0. E. Barker.

C. A. Agard, a young member of the Club, who entered this tournament. winning his only game from a very experienced . player F. C. R. Pollard. an old member of the Chess Club, was complimented on the strong opposition he put up and on the excellence of some of his games.

SCHOOL TOURNAMENT

A school championship tournament was held during October.

The interest shown was very keen indeed.
