~ = = == EDITORIAL. BEFORE apologising for our lateness we think it necessary to inform our readers that this is not our first attempt to write the editorial of this number. We have reluctantly condemned our original attempt to the waste paper basket, where, along with a few unfortunate manuscripts, the majority of which suffer this fate through their hopeless untidiness, it will blush unseen. Misjudging the space at our disposal, we were too diffuse, and after several frantic effor ts we at length gave up the task of condensing what we had written. Not content in our last issue with torturing our readers with " Spiritless Queen ·s, •' we had proposed this term- we take a 6.endish delight in doing these thingsto inflict on them au elaborate treatise entitled " Penniless Queen's."

But a las ! such an editorial required too much space, and ours Was limited.

Nevertheless, the following extract from the rough notes or ' skeleton ' we had made will give the reader a famt idea of what he has so narrowly escaped:

Much water indeed has Rowed under the bridge since the last Queen's College Magazine passed over- We do not intend to analyse this water too carefully, for fear that we may find an appreciable percentage of impurity, but, - to drop a metaphor which is beginning to tax too severely the sufficiently harassed editorial brain,-since custom has decreed that a New Year editorial should be a review of the past year, we

shall briefly touch on the most outstanding events of the year of grace. one thousand nine-hundred and twenty-fou r.

Since every boy is at present ~upposed to be training for the Athletic Sports. we shall deal firstly with Athletics. T he last sports which took place exactly a year ago, were a pronounced success, in spite of the inclemency of the weather. No records were broken on the slippery turf, but the times and distances were ~ceedingly good. In this issue, will be found the different records established at past Athletic meetings. It is noteworthy that the majority of the records are of recent dates.

T his serves to prove conclusively that Ath letics is not on the wane at College while Edwards' remarkable jump of 5 feet 5 inches at the Cycle and Athletic Sports of the B.G.C.C., spt:aks for itself.

We are undecided whether to congratulate the Cricket and Football Elevens on their splendid showing last season. or to sympathise with them on just failing to win the Garnett and Russell Cups respectively, Very detailed accounts of both games appear elsewhere in this issue, Neither Eleven has been considerably weakened this year, but we have commenced both seasons badly, having lost one Garnett and one Junior League Cup l\latch.

The Examination results were partly disappointing, partly gratifying, No one qualified for the B.G. Scholarship, but the results of the Cambridge Locals were satisfactory, as will be seen by the detailed account a few pages further on, L ate in the year, Mr. H arold Berry B·A., (Wrangler), Christ's Collegt:,

To Mr· Berry we extend a warm welcome.

Besides being a sound Mathematician, Mr. Berry as will be seen anon, is a very iood full back and has already assisted us in Football' and ~rick_et, while his keenness in Paper l.hasmg and Athletics generally 1 has been infectious. Having succeeded in boring our readers with our · review, ' we may now turn to the magazine, In this number the usual features appear, together with advectisements. These are the result of an attempt to make the m.lgazine self-supporting, and our Advertisements Manager is to be heartily congratulated upon his success.

With the publication of this number we Vdcate the editorial chair. The task of editing a school magazine is more arduous than the average reader is inclined to think, but nevertheless we have enjoyed it. It has meant llUlch time which we could ill afford, but the experience gained has been well worth the trouble. Also, it has been.

P ringle of the Y. M .C. A, who included the College in a ~eneral invitation to the schools of the city to attend his La nten Lecture " The Union Jack Among the Malays," delivered at the Gaiety Theatre on October I 7. Able lecturer as Mr, Pringle is, however, he could neither coax nor threaten so large a number of little children into silence, What little we heard. however, was very interesting, When the College re-opened on January 5. a campaign was started against those of our cyclists who ignore the ' rule of the road,' By dint of an

exacting strictness on the part of those in authority, very grati~ying results have been obtained. No longer may boys be seen courting disaster by recklessly dashing out of the College gates without using the recognised signals, or by riding en masse down Brickdam. We sincerely hope that the other cyclists of the city will follow our example. In this way we shall have rendered very great assistance to the P olice who started a similar campaign a few months ago.

When we compare the Chemical Laboratory of to-day with the poorly equipped building we knew when we were in the Third, we are inclined to envy the Lower School, who are receiving. at a more receptive age, a more solid ground work than the majority of us in the upper School have ever had.

Of the many improvements for which we have to be thankful the most recent is perhaps the most welcome. A door has been cut in the western wall of the building bv means of which the student can more quickly reach the Gas M achine. Let us hope that the building will be enlarged in the near future.

After a reign of 13 years, specialization for the British Guiana Scholarship has passed away unwept, unmourned and unsung. In its stead, rules the more general knowledge required for the Higher Certificate Examinations of the Joint Board of Oxford and Cambridge.

While the old regime undoubtedly gave a more intimate and thorough knowledge of a particular subject, the system of specialization was totally unsuited to a school with an overworked and

QliEEN"S COLLEGE SCHOOL lrAG.\7.1.NE. ·variable staff, and was fundamentally 'bad since it tended to impair the gen~ral knowledge of boys of the Sixth.

The papers of the Main groups of the new examination are except for distinction papers somewhat below Entrance Scholarship standard. In some ·cases, they are distinctly harder (as for •example, Practical and Theoretical Physics). The quantity of work how·ever, is considerably greater , Evidence of this is·the fact that no boy taking the ,examination for the first time with ·Modern Studies as his main group, is -offering more than two Group subjects, although by the Scholarship Regula·tions a boymay offer three.

ent class, Mr. Skeels of the Y.M.C.A. being instructor , This term also snv an attempt made to revive the Queen's College Scout Troop {No, I) which had been out of existeuce for many years- Several of our boys are naturally reluctant to sever their connection with the troops they joined while Troop No, I was dormant, but we sincerely hope that the efforts of Mr. Stanley Chee-a-Tow. one of our most enthusiatic Old Boys, will meet with the success they deserve.

Mr- Chee-a-Tow also started a wrestling class last term- Unfortunately, the class had a very short life because of our inability to obtain a mat, It is hoped however, that we shall obtain one in the near future, when Mr. Cheea-Tow will doubtless be kind enough to resume the classes, which promised to be very popular.

EXHAUSTION OF THE WORLD 'S FUEL SUPPLY.

AN ESSAY BY A SIXTH FORMER. It is a curious fact that in almost all men, there exists a marked tendency to speculate with regard to the future, whether it be as to what the weather will be to-morrow, or as to when the next war will take place. This is probably due to a natural desire to know what the future holds in store for us. It is no such simple and idle leanings however, which prompt men nowadays to attempt to pierce the darkness of the future, in order to see what is to become of the world in the event of its fuel supply being exhausted.

Ever since the days when the steam engine first created a demand for an industrial fuel supply, this demand has been steadily on the increase and has never once fallen back. The reason foe this lies in the rapid growth of the use of machinery, and its employment in ever.increasing directions. At first, and up to a few decades ago, the only fuel used was coal, and there was usually, at least in coal-producing countries, as much as was required. To.day oil has gone far on the way towards displacing coal altogether as a fuel. Such how• ever, is our pre~eot enormous

consumption of fuel, that present' supplies of both oil and coal are expected to dwindle within the next couple of hundred years, in the same manner as our forests are. fast falling before the axe.

Before considering what ar~ the chances for and against such an eventuality, let us see what would be the state of things in the world were we to be faced suddenly with the prospect of fuel exhaustion.

We have seen what has happened on the occasion of coal strikes, and it requires very little imagination to extend this temporary stoppage in the supply of one type of fuel to a general exhaustion of all supplies.

The first and immediate result would be an absolute paralysing of· all large industrial operations.

Such is man's dependence on machinery to-day, for performing even minor operations, that civilization would feel much like the proverbial •' fish on land" were this now almost indispensable aid to life removed. As a natural result of the crippling of industry would follow the disintegration of trade and commerce. Then, i£ the exhaustion were so complete as not to leave fuel even for domestic purposes, the

Anyone who lives in a cold country can picture a winter without coaJ. Fortunately however, if and when exhaus tion does come, it is not like. ly to be so sudden as to produce the effects depicted above.

The fuels in use t o.day are all products of either coal or petroleum together with just a small quantity of wood. Ceal, besides being used in its nat ura l state as fuel for furnaces in all branches of indust ry, is also con verted into coal gas for lighting and household use, and to s ome extent for working internal.combus tion engines. Of petroleum products those with which we are most concerned are gasolene, fuel oil and gas oil, for kerosine as a fuel is only used in very small quantities as a substitute for gasoline. We a ll know the prominence to which the internal combustion engine has a ttained in recent years, a nd by far the greater number of these use gasoline as their fuel. This makes the demand for th is product enormous ; statistics shew that the United Sta tes pr oduced and con. sumed in 1922 nearly 190,000,000 barrels of it. Gas oil, used mainly for making producer gas ÂŁor engines, is not of much importance. and can easily be replaced. Fuel oil is of much greater importance, as it is this that has fough t and conquered coal on its own ground- under the boiler.

It cannot be said that the present generation is likely to be faced with a fuel shortage, but there are certain unmistakable signs which shew tha t some future generation will have to face such a shortage unless

means are taken to prevent itThere are sever al factors which. contribute to this opinion. F irstly, there is the natural increase in fuel consumption owing to increased in-d us trial activity ; then the extra-ordinary increase in the use of internal combustion engines ; and finall y, the introduction of oil in place of coal as fuel for the furnace of the steam engine. Statistics are always impressive, and this case isno exception . There are at present in the world m or e than sixteen million automobiles, using annually more than two hundred million b arr els of gasoline. With regard to fuel oil, it may be mentioned that the s teamship " Leviathan" uses 68,000 barrels of fuel on a round trip across the Atlantic ; th is represents the total production of the average oil well a t p,resent, for the ne.x t twenty-five year s.

With such huge and ever-increasing consumption, it is easy to see tha t the end must come before very long. At present our chief sources of supply are the coal and oil fields and oil shale. The coal field s are known to be enormous in extent, and as the burden of supplying industry w ith fuel is being cons tantly shifted from coal on to oil, the life of our coal supply should not occasion considerable alarm at present, except in so far as the removal to n ew fields, as t h e old ones become exhausted, would mean the removal of indus trial centres and the consequent impoverishment of some dis tricts.

About the supply of oil, less is definitely known, but it is fairly certain that even a t the p r esent

rate of consumption, this supply cannot last more than a hundred years.

It having been established that a shortage and ultimately total exhaustion must occur unless steps are taken to prevent it, it would be a crime fo r this or any future generation to go on its heedless path of prodigal consumption, squandering the heritage of the unborn, regardless of the welfare of those to come. It therefore behoves us to take every measure possible to conserve the world's supply of fuel.

There is not the slightest doubt that our present s upply could be used far more economically than is at present being done.

The majority of the automobile -e ngines of to-day are of American manufacture, and these are so designed that in order to provide a large reserve of power to obviate the necessit,i of frequent gear. changing, they are positively extravagant in their fuel consumption.

It is estimated that by a universal change in design in the United States, the fuel consumption of automobiles in the entire world could be reduced by thirty per cent.

Similar economies could be effected in other types of machinery. Also, it is well known that the internal combustion engine has a far greater thermal efficiency than the steam engine or turbine, which means that for a given amount of fuel, the former can produce far more power than the latter. Thus by . employing engines of the Diesel type say, for general marine and locomotive use, fuel consumption

could be materially reduced. Electric dynamos driven by water power also provide a source of cheap power, and are used in many countries in Europe where coal is scarce ; the immense power of the tides is a source of power which is just beginning to be utilized .

In add ition to conserving our present supply by various economies, there is also the possibility of employing substitutes for certain fuel now in general use. Denatured alcohol has already been used as a s ubstitute for gasoline, and there are several products of alcohol which are said to be superior even to benzole as fuel for automobiles, and which require only a cheaper cost to bring them into more general use. There is also an oil obtained by the distillation of coal wnich closely resembles mineral crude oil, but, of cour~e. the large production of this would undoubtedly hasten the exhaustion of the coal fields.

The necP.ss1ty for fuel economy is beginning to be realised by every nation to-day, but it is especially important to those which depend on sea power as their national defence. Few people realise the vast quantities of fuel required to keep a large fleet of war vessels on the move. Those who were responsible for the operation of the British Navy during the Great War are not likely to forget the anxious moments when, owing to the exhaustion of the Naval Oil Reserves, the Home Fleet was threatened with a fuel shortage which would h~ve rendered it practically impotent. Nor was it only the navies which had to be

All that has been said before shews clearly the importanc~ of fuel, especially oil, both in pea,ce and in war. Years before the Great War, Great Britain, realizing the growing importance of oil sought to establish her own s:::,urces of supply. These the war proved to be hopelessly inadequate, and since the cessation of that grim ¡struggle on the battlefields of

Europe, an almost equally bitter conflict has been r aging across the tables of Peace Conferences for the possession of oil-bearing lands.

Even outside of war, more and more industrial operations are being performed mechanically now-adays, and this means more power required. Thus it appears that the maintenance of a proper fuel supply is of vi tal importance to the industrial welfare of a nation, and every effort should therefore be made to conserve present supplies, and to discover new ones, if mankind is to continue to enjoy the mode of living to which it has be.come accustomed.

Three P aper Chases were held duri ng last term, all being well patronised.

'This, we believe, constitutes the record number of ' Chases ' held in one term.

Mr. Berry, Donald and Edwards, together with M essrs, Sharples and .L ewis, two old boys, were hares, The laying of the trails \-\-as on the whole very well carried out.

At one of these chases, the plan of giving points towards the General 'S hield was giveu a trial, Mr. Berry and two Old Boys were hares and the order in which the hounds finisheci was noted. Next day, Mr. Berry having -examinecl the hounds individually, de路 -cided upon the order of merit, both the places gained and the correctness of the trail followed being taken into Raleigh house gained the .account.

W e continued our season after the Easter Holidays by meeting and defeating the Infantry Sports Club.

Archdeacon Branch of Antigua who again honoured the school with a visit, was among the spectators of our most sensational victory. W e lo!t the toss and were sent in to bat on a wicket which had not yet recovered from the effects of a shower which had falle n about anJ hour before., Donald. whose agility served him in good stead. was the only one o~ our batsmen who could withstand the attack of Too Chung and Vanier. who were both making the ball kick dangerously. Of the total of 46. he contributed 12.

The I.S.C., on a much more im proved wicket, made I 11, of which Vanier made 44. H e was the only batsmat1 who was not worried by the clever bowling of M ackenzie wh:> took 5 wickets for 38' runs. \ Vith a deficit of 65 runs to wipe off, we commenced our second innmgs. Thou~h Wong and Smi~!{ played steadily, three wickets wer.! lost before 30 runs were ~cored, when play for the day ce3sed. Early on the next Saturday, S. P. Fernandes and M r. Pilgrim became associated in an interestin 2 oartnershio. While the former exercised extraordinarr cautio'l and monotonously stoppe1 P.verythin~ pitched on the wicket, the fatter demonstrated what powel'ful. driving and fearlefs hitting could ac-1 complish. Fernandes made 16, and Mr. Pilgrim 72, ( 13 focrs, 2 sixei;

8 singles). Of the other doublefigure batsmen, Y ing contributed a patient 13, Mackenzie a faultless 18 (not out) and Ewing Chow an 3.ttractive 23.

Exttas contributed 4 7 and the innings was declared closad at 215 for 9 wickets. This was the first double-century score ever made, by the College in the G arnett Cup Competition.

The I.S.C. were set to make 150 in 100 minutes, and this they failed to do, the whole team crumbling for 82; the cause of their downfall be· ing Ewing-Chow's apparently simple off-breaks and Mackenzie's effective swerving. W e thus won the match' by 68 runs and registered our thin~ three-point win.

We were now being looked upon as likely Cup Winners ;ind it wa-. felt that our next ma tch against the B.G.C.C. would result in an easy victory for the College. R ain prevented play on the first Saturday. O n the next, we won the toss and madethe mistake of electing to field. Tl1e wicket, though very slow, played true; but good fielding was impos~t · hie in the slushy out-field.

Tb B.C.C. C. made 60, Mackenzie takinir 5 for 21 , Ewing Chow 2 for JlJ, ~ and Smith 2 for 5. ~ Though the weather had improvr.d' as the match progressed, the wicket had been badly cut up by the boot,; and bats of our opponents during their· innings. As it was, the team could 1 only muster 43 runs, of which score.

Mr. Pilgrim was responsible for 13.

This defeat considerably weakened our chances at the cup, for the C.U.C.C. were now leading with J4 points and two matches to plav; the G.C.C. were next with 10 points and three matches to play, while we were third with nine points with th•? same number of unplayed matches cs the G .C.C. A fter an interval of more than two months-caused by th<\ examinations and the August Holidays-we met our next opponents, the Ma lteeno~s Sports Club on the A rtillery Groun~!.

W e lost the toss and our opponents elected to bat on a fiery wicket, whi~h though apparently perfect was crum · bling, the ball kicking and shooting in sportive fashion. H. IP. Fernandes was unplayable, taking 3 wickets for 7 runs in 3 l / 6 overs, one pf whic'1 was a maiden; Ewing·Chow wh"..' took 2 for 7, commanded great re· spect; but Smith, who kept a n excellent length. and used his leg-swerves to great effect, was the most success· ful , capturing 4 for 25 . T he whole team fell for 5 I runs.

We fared little better. Smith and Mr. B erry opened on the erratic pitch.

Both batsmen played patiently against the accurate bowling of Duke and Mr., Berry went first B enjamin. having contributed a single. Ying the~ ooined Smith who was playing confi · d ently and seemed to be settling down, when he suddenly grew impatient an:\ hit across a straight 'shooter' from

Duke, for which indiscretion he paid the inevitable penalty. A procession then followed, Mr. Pilgrim, Ewing· Chow, and Vyfhuis being dismissed without contributing anything to the score. Ying was at last bowled by Benjamin. His innings of 15 wa, certainly uninspiring, but the occasion demanded patient tactics. Donald off-drove crisply, and it seemed as though the game would be saved when he was run out throui;::h a misunderstanding with H. P . F ernandP; When the latter was bowled , thr. score was 39 for 8, a nd defeat on tl•e first innin!lS seemed imminent when a pluckv effort by Wishart and L~ took the score to 5 3 a nd thus won the match.

Goin!l in to bat aqain. the M.S.C had made 9 1 for 6 , when play f.>.. the first day ended.

Inclement weather on the next Saturday prevented the continuation of the match, and so we scored a tw,,point win.

The tasf of wiping off the 146 runs necessary to save the side an innings defeat proved impossible to the E -I.C . C. who seemed to be com· o letelv demoralized. Indeed on th(; -~ext Saturday only six men appeared on the ground to make the attempt.

F ernandes, Smith and Vyfhuis quick, ly dismissed them for 22 runs. \ Ve thas won .by an innin~s and 124 runs, the most severe defeat we have ever inflicted in the Competition.

T he Competition had now reachv.l a n interesting position; the Church· me11's Union wr re leadi:i l! with 17 . points. The C.C.C. and ourselves shared the second place with 14 points each. Each team now ha d o ne match to play. Defeat for the leaders and three point vicJtories for both the runners-up would have necessitat~d a triangular final. For a ·while, t hings seemed to be moving in thi~

direction, fickle for tune deeming it 6it to tantalise us to the last. F orl while we on the D.C .C. ground w~ inflicting a crushing defeat on the home team, and the C.C.C.were en joying a similar success against thf: E. I . C. C., the Churchmen's U nion seemed to be in a bad way again'!t the I. S. C., for the latter were leadin g on the first innings. Making a characteristic recovery however, the Cup-Holders dismissed their oppon· r nts for less, than 30 runs on a perfect wicket and then quickly hit up the runs necessary for an outright win. Thus they won the Cup for the third time in succession, for which they are to be heartily congratulated.

In our last match against the D-C. C. , whom we had not met since 192 1, we compiled the second double-century score -202.

Sent in to bat on a tricky but improving wicket, Ying and Donald made a good start, the former contributing 15 and the la tter 34, Vyfhws played a masterly innings of 50, a nd Ewing plaved rathrr patiently for 17 \'l(/ ishart was again successful, scor • ing 26 not out. Wharton was last man in, and made 13 before he was run out.

The 192 4 C arnett Cup Season having ended , a start was made with the 1925 H ouse Matches. Lack of space prevents us from doing more than commenting on these matches in general terms.

A s first XI matche3 when nlayec! on Saturday mornings on the C.C.C. Ground, were never brought to a sat isfactory conclusion through lack of time, it was proposed and carried that all matches (Senior a nd Junior ) sl1ould last two days. First X I matches were to be played on the Collers,: gi:ound between I and 5 p.m., ar:d S econd X I matches on the C C .C ground between 8 and l l a.m. The advantages derived fro~ the longer time for play, can be seen from the results of the First XI match betwPen Percival and Austin, and the Second X I match between Raleigh and Au~· tin.

The general standard of the First XI batting seems to have improved ~ while there were a few n<,te-wortl~ individu al performances; but as u~ual, the bowlers were more suce•'iful than the batsmen. P ercival's l st X I are worthy of commendation for their steady fielding ; the fielding of Raleigh's 1st XI was also good; but, wi th the exception of Donald and Vyfhuis, the fielding of A ustin's l st XI was generally slack ; tl1is eleven evidently considering smart fielding beneath them .

T he Tst XI wicbtkeepers were H arewood ii (Perci· valr, Robinson i (RaleigT1) and Bar row i (Austin) . Harewood ii gives promise of developing into a coof wicket-keeper, but is not inclined fo take things seriously/.

Raleigh's 2nd X.I :1!ways failed to do themselves justicr, and would do well to remember that many things might happen before the chickens are hatched . Austin House 2nd XI deserves every congratulatil)n for 1l1eir plucky showing.

With a

very weak team both in batting and bowling, they succeeded in making 59 and 3.0 against Percival and 2 3 ancl 82 against Raleigh whom they defeated.

The bowling of the 2nd XI teams was very good, but thete was a general tendency to try to bowl too fast, and not to worry about running off.

The ficlding was gen• erally good and the wicket-keeping fair.

NOTES. I. THE HOUSE SEASON So many months have elapsed since Austin put Percival to rout in the last match of the 1924 InterHouse Football Competition, that :1 d etailed account of these matchc.s would hardly be interesting. Therefore, in commenting on the last house· season, we shall confine ourselves to ~cneral remarks on the play of the fiouses as a whole, publishing, for the puroose of keeping an authentic re· c;0rd. merely the results of the matches and the scorers of the goals.

It will be remembered that Percival carried everything before them in . the first round. The second round. however, saw this house suffer a se,· ;es of reverses, which culminated irt their complete defeat by Austin, ~o which slight . mention has already been made. ·when a team of good players fails, lack of combination is usually the cause. So it was with P ercival.

the hard grounds of the first round, failed to be effective on the slushy pitches on which the games of thi: second round were played. This lack of cohesion characterized both thi Senior and Junior XI's in this round, 'for though the passing of the 2nd XI (orwards was moderately good in the first round, in the second, they followed the example of their senior.;.

Both of P ercival Elevens possessed ver~, sound defenders. Harewood ii is deserving of special mention as a promisin g goal keeper while Hall ii has the makin g of a good centrP half in him.

The achievement of Raleigh, the 119 24 Shield winners, is all the more praiseworthy when it is remembered that their teams were apparently the :weakest. Playing with their customary grit, they fought desperately when d efeat seemed imminent, and, with the exception of Lam, whose pretty pribbling and classic shots were a!~ys delightful to see, their forwards -scored their goals by literally smash.. ing through their opponents defence.

Nor was their forward play char~ ilC'lerised by any soectacular passing The combination of the forwards was simple but effective, They contrivecJ a lways to move in a pack. and thei,. combined or.slau ght usually resulted in th'e dreaded scrimmage within t!ie penaltv area. By these tactics, the-y invariably wore down the defence of their opponents, and it is significant Nial on no fewer than three occasions

did the full-backs of their opponents put the ball through their own goal~.

The play of Austin House in the first half was very disappointing. Th.': house which contributed four players to the School XI should have been in a better position at the end of the season.

An explanation of their failur~ was not hard to find. The fact that on many occasions their first X I took. the field as many as three short, betrayed a lamentable lack of keenne~s in the house. We write quite impartially, and are well aware that we are running the risk of being told to mind our own business; but eve.r y â&#x20AC;˘ one will agree that this is not an entirely "domestic" affair. Austin has the best material in the school for the construction of football X i's and thi~ material is remaining undeveloped.

It requires no severe mental effort to realise that this state of affairs will ultimately react on future School Teams.

Donald was the mainstay of the l st XI as was Steele that of the 2nd.

Hugh, who was the right half back of Austin's first eleven, is deserving of special mention for his plucky and dogged tackling in every match.

The following very brief resume of the House season shows how Raleigh won the Shield:-

7. THE RUSSEL CUP COMP£· TITION .

As we explained at s~ e, lengtfa in our last Football Notes, our wittdrawal from the Junior League Competition last year was unavoidable.

That we did not adopt a similar cour5.: in the Russel Cup Comoelition was due to the fact that throu11:h the cou~tesv of Mr. A. M. Tones. the hon. " Secretary of the B.G-F.A. our fir! match was postponed to Septembe TOth, five days after the school re opened for the Christmas Term.

Nevertheless, the team that playecl throughout the competition did not consist of our best men, but of thosl? men who were best able to train re!! · ularly during the last few weeks of the August vacation. Training was done on the Artillery Sports Club: ground, for the use of which we we,·e indebted to Mr. V. D. P. Woolford. the hon. Secretary of the club.

That we failed to win the cup after having won our way to the fina l must be attributed to the weak shoot· ing of our forwa rds, and especially their inability to shoot at once. This indeed has been a characteristic of the School XI for the pa~t five yean, our hesitating style of play havint b een unconsciously developed playing during the intervals on th~ hopelessly uneven school pitch. It appears that Mahangar, Aston's right full back cleared high towards our goal. Their inside right trapped, and in attempting to dribble past our defence, kicked the ba ll past Mr. Berry. There was a distinct improvemel!t in the batting. O ur batsmen however, always seemed afraid to play forward. This was due to the errati .: school pitches on which they were .9.r,customed to practise.

Neverthelel"s, more confidence was shown than usu al. There was less nibbling at th.~ off-ball, but there was too great a tendency to indulge in excessive pulling. The team as a whole however. was deplorably weak in running b~ · tween the wickets. T his should be d ilig1mtly practised this season.

The bowling was of a very hig~i order indeed- There was muci~ variety in our attack, and the boJv! · ers in general seemed to have realised that swerving is useless unless it cai: be controlled.

T he fielding of the team was exceptionally good especially when it is remembered that there are parts cf the school field, little better than ~ pasture for cows. This being but my second term as Captain of Percival, I can do no better than follow the example of my illustrious predecessors who, on entering office, have appealed to the members of the house for cooperation. The house has prospered greatly in the past because its cap· tains have seldom made their appeal in vain. T herefore, all we have to do is to continue to 'pull together.'

Ti}.e House did fairly well last year in the competitions for the various shields, having succeeded in winning two out of the po.ssible four and in securing second place in one other.

Contrary to all expectations, we lost the Football Shield, when Lhe defeat of our XI's seemed impossible. The successful house (Raleigh) deserves the highest congratulations, for its teams have always fought in the face of great odds.

As was mentioned in the last notes, !Percival easily won the Cricket Shield. It seems however,

tha we are rn danger of losing it this year, for the order at the end of the first round is: Raleigh ( I 2 points); Percival (8 poirrts) ; Austin ( 4 points) ; bat there is no reason why we should not make a recovery, if a second round' is played.

Athle tics ia the house seems to be dead or dying. For the past four years our position in the race for the Athletic Shield has been last, and on all four occasions our defeat has been ignominious. It is true that our material has been in· variably ·very poor, but I am convinced that our showing would have been better, had more boys actually tried.

No boy can possiblY. know how well he may be ableto run or jump or throw the ball, unless he tries. You may be a Paddock and through never trying, remain unaware of this fact. Therefore. I earnestly beseech the boysof the House to get into serioustraining, and to do this immediately, as the sports are only three weeks

off, It is with justifiable pride that the House looks back on its record in the General Snield·. A ll our Old' · Boys, and especially our las( Cap~tain, will I am sure, be exceedingly-

We finished !he year with a clear gain of 235 points, while both of our rivals were again on the negative side of zero. This we did in spite of the fact that we did not gain as many points as Raleigh at the examina· ' tions.

It therefore reflects very creditably on the conduct of the House during 1924 .

Our boys, however, were fairly successful at the examinations. \ X/hile <:ongratulatin g a ll, special mention must be made of Radway and Adamson who ga ined 97 and 43 points respectively, and of Humphrey and Harewood ii who gained 7 1 and 62 points respectively.

T his year, however, we are faced ·w ith a ,·ery grave matter. the serious attention of ,P ercival boys to these alarming figures. In the three lowest forms especially, there are several of our boys, who may very well affix to their names the title O .V.D. (Order of the V eteran D etentionists. ) We have repeatedly reported these O .V. D.'s ; should these losses continue, we may have to resort to other methods of persuasion which are less gentle but more effective.

T urning to general matters, I detire to offer, on behalf of the House, hearty congratulations to Mr. C. R. Mitchell, who has wound up his career by leading the First Class H onoursmen in his final B.Sc. (Agriculture ) at MacGill University a nd to Mr. A. G . M aclean (Captain of Percival, 1921-22), who has been awarded the Guiana Scholarship which lapsed last year.

To the Evan W ongs, whose connection with the House is too wellknown lo need comment, we extend our sincere sympathy in their sad bereavement.

This is exceedingly regrettable, as his keenness had already begun to be reflected in the conduct of the boys of the House, and at no other time do we stand in such great need of an athletic master as this term, when the annual sports and the H ouse Football Competition will take place.

The departure of M r. C. V. Lewis, who has for many years assisted the House in every direction, but especially m Athletics and Cricket, makes our loss of Mr. Berry even more regrettable.

I am pleased to say that progress has been well·mamtamed smce tlie admomtion of ow· last House Captains, our net loss for 1924 bemg only I 68- the lowest on record for the House. In spite of this, we have a gain lost the G eneral Shiel~. I sincerely hope, however, that the House will gain this trophy for the fu-st time in 1925.

I ca nnot fail to congratulate both elevens for winning the F ootball Shield. Special mention must b:! made (,f the brilliant display of Hazlewood a t left full-back a nd of Lam at inside-left.

My congratulations must also be extended to our 1925 Cricket Elevens who have finished the first round of this year's matches, four points ahead of P ercival who were the runners-up. We have only to., maintain our lead if ·we wish t c,., win the shi eld.

The spor ts will take place fou r weeks hence.

Austin House has from its inst itution won the Athletic Shield. O ur efforts must therefore · be concentra ted on preventing them from winning it a fifth time. There is only one way in which this can be accomplished, a nd that is, by · serious training.

The general apathy which our · Editor bemoaned in the last editorial, seems to be most pronounced in Austin.

That lack of intere~t has not confined itself to school activities. but it has spread until it · has affected house acttv1t1es, and · that to an alarming extent. In games especially is it felt. It has been no u nusual thing of late for us to play ·throughout an entire game in both cricket and football. with three or fou r men missing. Furthermore. the · num"Ber of boys that turn up to '"';tness the matches is so small th at ·-generally we cannot secure a single reserve or substitute· In consequence. · in football matches, we have h ad · to carry on games with as few as •ei!Jht men, and in cricket we have

A USTIN HOUSE . had to resort to obtaining substi· tutes from the other houses. It speaks very badly indeed for a house when it has to stoop to such indignities.

Not only m games 1s this lack of interest felt, but also within ~chool. There is a certain set of boys who continue losing points week after week with no regard for their House's welfare.

I appeal to you, boys of Austin, to put a n end to this state of affairs; this, I am certain, you will try to do, when you realise that c.omplete extinction awaits us if you do not turn over a new leaf.

For 1924, we won the Athletic Shield and were the runners-up in the Cricket Shield. We failed mi;erably in the race for the F ootba!l a nd · G eneral Shields. A disastrous first round, due to causes given above, was the cause of our failure in the former. [When we first read these anony· mous letters, we came to the conclusion that the a uthors were insane; subsequent identification proved that our surmise could hardly be said to be incorrect-Co-Eds.] Some time ago, I became possessed of a little book, the title of which was "Rules of A ssociation Football." Of course, being as lout le monde knows, an enthusias· tic footballer, I carefully perused it and have come to the conclusiOil that it certainly needs revising. With this laudable object in view, I called a meeting of various responsible ( did I see the printer handle a •query'?) persons, who are interested in the noble game, and laid my project before them. They unanimously agreed w ith me, and so we set about compiling a " Revised Ver· sion of the Ru les of Association Football."

Professor Mitschilloff, that wonderful genius, as ' his "Essay on Preferen!iaf Polypus" proves, rem:arked that an analys)s ,of tlie word would lead to curious \and nhexpected results. " What," he asked, "is 'a ball?" It was true tha t it was sometimes an inffated sphere, but it }vas equally true that it was a

meeting of both sexes for the purpose of T erpsichorean enjoyment· "With what then," \~uoth the Professor, "is that enjoyment intimately connected?

With the foot, of course, hence the term of 'football.' " H e therefore moved that footbaH be considered to mean d ancing. But Captain Ahmed Houri a rose, a nd extracting from his pocket his favour· ite brick, replied that he would answer the Professor in his own language. What was it he held in his hand? A brick. For what purpose was a brick used? For the purpose of erection; but it was also intimately connected with ftooring, and he added, a dangerous gleam leaping into his eyes, that he would floor with that brick anyone who dared suggest that football was dancing.

The Professor hastily subsided.

This difference settled, we proceeded to amend the old rules and to consider entirely new definitions. theorems, etc. Lord Gorbish of Grinville moved that they be called 'foot-rules,' 'for short,' as he said but the Captain arose and witlt a heavy round ruler, ruled him out' of order. They had reached Lake Ikaraka at last, after wading through two or three swamps, as wet boots-turned upside down -and wet socks-turned inside out-now testified.

They, a party of four, were now in the small rest-house or benabopen all around, roof of thatched palm-leaves secured to poles which did duty as rafters-busily and strenuously engaged in bawling and howling to the Indians across the L ake for a corial. " I think one is coming, •' said Robert, shading eyes with hand to brow, ' • can't make out what it is though. Wish we had glasses. L ooks like a boat." The others finished their vocal exercises, and gazed lakeward still full of excitement, chattering gaily.

The next moment, a shout behind them, that was half a scream, startled them. " L ook a snake I Look a snake !" Charles, pointing excitedly to a white band, barely visible, stretched across a rift in the palm-leaves, seemed somewhat alarmed. The others crowded around him, gaping, chattering, asking unnecessary questions. ,. What's it, Charlie ? A snake ? Where ? What's the name ;, A Labaria ? " Just then. probably suspecting that all was not well, the snake shot his head and two inches of lithe body out from among the leaves, and surveyed the group. He caused much alarm when he darted out a brown, string-like tongue, which Bob, the youngest, declared to be a sting.

R obert, the eldest, after critically eyeing that motionless, browo head unfolded a cot, folded his coat as a pillow. and, treating the whole affair with disdain, lay down to rest after his four miles tramp, After vainly trying to scare Robert with the idea that the snake was going to spring on him, they went off into the forest nearby to get sticks, boasting of deeds of valour yet to be.

L elt alone with the snake, Robert lay perfectly still in the cot, and with half-closed eyes watched its movements. That reptile, seeing the coast clear and everything still, wriggled about the roof and among the leaves with an agility which would have struck fear into the hearts of many.

At last, having fo und a rafter that suited his purpose, he began swiftlyto descend, That rafter passed over the cot• Robert, holding his breath, hands to sides, remained as if dead.

The snake-brown back, white bellycame along very swiftly. as if with an object in view, then just as it got directly over him, Robert sprang up, and seizing a paddle, knocked it to the around ; pinned it there. His quick, sure action, if performed on a stage, would have brought down the house.

R obert stood gazing al the reptile-about one foot six, he estimated- stood gazini as if fascinated by its gymnastics.

' Kill it, or let it go, which ? he asked himself, for a moment or two. T hen an idea struck him. H e smiled and his eyes twinkled with devilry.

H e unlocked with one hand the lunch-basket on the table beside him, which was not packed to the brim ; covered the napkins with a thick piece of brown paper ; and seemed satisfied.

Reaching across the basket, he selected another parldle from the group on the table. placed it on the ground in a slanting position, with end pres,ed against the side:: of the snake, his object being to sweep the reptile on le this second paddle with the first, keeping him pinned between the two.

A fter a few successful attemp ts duriug w hich the snake gained a moment's freedom and Robert lost his temper, he gleefully succeeded in lifting it fro m the ground, squeezed between the two paddles. Moving it slowly across to the lunch-basket , he d ropped the snake in on the paper ; quickly closed and locked the basket. Pausing for a moment to gaze across the lake at the approaching craft, which now he saw was a corial, Robert returned leisurely to his cot, chuckled; and rubbed his hands together with -glee.

H e was not a moment too soon, for just then armed with poles twice the length and circumference of t he snake they hoped to kill, the three snakefighters tramped into the benab , •· W here is the snake ? '' they demanded of Robert's reclining form. Except for a heaving of the che~t. a Ricker of the eye-lid, he showed no other sign of life. " Robert, where is the snake ?"

Bob demanded advancing a step and brandishing his stick. Two snorts

intended for snores were all the reply he received.

R obert's placid slumber unstrung their nerves, Dick, with eyes ever upward, blundered across to the cot more by instinct than sight, and shook Robert roughly. "Oh ! don't bother me !" said that gentleman testily; "run away and play- better still give me my lunch. " "Yes, that's all you' re good for, you lazy lump l Where's the snake?" ' Oh! the snake l" Robert yawned and stretched, " I dimly remember seeing it coming down that i:;ole , a:1d-er-well-erl don't remember any more . Maybe I even dreamt that. ,• E h I you let a snake hang right over your head, and you go off to sleep ?'' asked Charles incredulously. "No, man I that pill sticks-it sticks right here, " he added, pointing to his throat, at which the others laughed. " Look for it then, " Robert suggested, sarcastically I "and when you are tired, give me my lunch, T he thing must have wriggled into the grass. L et's hope :you'll find it and get bitten.''

They took his ad vice as mere banter, that idle Row of words in which the unemployed indulge, and searched , at first with caution, then gaining boldness w ith failure, A t last, -getting tired of a fruitless search , D ick voiced the opinion of all when he said he felt hungry. " Man. but I'm too sorry that snake got away, you know ?'' Bob declared ; " because J alone, man, I alone with my big stick, ,vould have killed him. " The others differed in opinion, and said so, " He was something like four feet long, ,• said D ick, '• Four feet! " cried C harles, indignantly moving across to the basket ; ·' he was nearly six. "

He fitted the key into the lock ; turned it ; flung open the basket. The next moment, uttering a wild scream : " Help ! murder I '' and executing a Hying leap, he bolted from the benab like a startled muslang, followed closely

by Dick and Bob. N ot keeping strictly to the path , they took tree-stumps and drains, shrubs and stakes, in one leap. They collided with one another ; screamed and shouted ; cursed inanimate objects which hindered their progress.

Meanwhile , the snake had made good his escape by running into â&#x20AC;˘the grass, followed only by the sound of Robert's very hearty laughter .

When the undaunted three had plucked sufficient courage to return to

the benab, they did not enter, but al a safe distance from it, preferred to 'indulge in profanity.

The corial, manned by a single Indian, then ran aground. And only when the Carib confirmed R obert's statement that the snake was harmless were they persuaded to enter the benab. ' ' H e don't bite," explained this semicivilized being; " he only does eat de cockroach and de rat, and den he go. " â&#x20AC;˘' But, by-the-way, wasn't it a Labaria ?'' asked Charles.

Thev were in the corial. R ol:ert laughed so heartily that he could not paddle. " It was only a Lizard-snake, child I" he replied, and this time they all laughed together,

D ear Mr. Editor, A kind friend sent me a copy of the Q ueen's College Magazine fo r the summer term 1924. Having devoured it (not literally) from cover to cover, I feel a deep sense of shame at the way I (and apparently ma11y other O ld Boys) have neglected our alma maier.

Speaking for myself how<-ver, I must say that I have nol forgotten the old coll. Here out in Africa I am living with an Old Boy from St. Mary's College, Trinidad, and many a friendly wrangle we've had over the respective merits of Queen's College and St. Mary's. Again on many occasions I catch myself singing the ' Laude Grate-

rrur.' Moreover th ose grand old feeds we med to have are still green in my memory.

The real reason. I think , for our apparer,t neglect is that we Old Boysand this must be specially true of those of us abroad-find the school of life very exacting- We are so busy trying to get something out of life that we cannot afford the time for writing articles.

Any old how, d o your best to revive the Old Boys A ssociation and you can reckon on me as a member. I shan't promise regular contributions but if you like I can send you on occasional article on the bits of East Africa I have seen.

Regards to the old College and best wishes for its future. Special remembrance however to House B, my old House.
