A HOLIDAY VISION. The Day of Wrath. that awful Day, When Heaven and E arth Shall pa s away. .

Easter Monday _and all the City is astir. All are happy and Joyous:. al~ have buned car~ out of sight for the day at least. Thef plan ptcotcs. p leasure arties, excursions- but all take care that these will end before five o'clock. At that hour, all will wend their way towards the Park, for Signor Celli will ascend in his balloon up and beyond the skies. ~ome had already seen a balloon ascend. There was nothing so very new or strange in tha t : but not many, if any of th~m, had ever seen before what Signor Celli was going to do, or• said h~ would ~o- for some were sceptical, -jump out of his ballooo when it was high up in the sky, entrusting his safety to a mere umbrella, which he called a parachute. . All the. , city wa~ astir, hal:PY and expectant. All knew Qf Signor Cell~ s ascent m the evenmg, except Dame Smith. She had • heard nothmg, not ~ven a whi~per. Holidays made no difference o her. . As usual, m the evenmg she was reading her Bible a l the topen wmdow. She was reading about John's vision-how he· ~aw the ange l descend from the open Heavens to announce the Second Comin~. and so11ght to picture this. She looked up inlo the · sky, and remained as one petrified. Down on her knees she went, awe-str~ck and afraid. "The ,day of Judgment," she kept on murm~n n ~, " ~he day of Judgment." Her aged eyes and heightened 11nagmahon had seen in Signor Celli: descending in his parachute, the angel that woul~I announce U1e end of the world.

THE CAMBR!DUE PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION. In December last, for the first time, the Cambridge Preliminary Ex~mioation was held under the new condition laid down by the l'..ocal Examinatio:1s and Lectures Syndicate of the University.

These, we venture to say, are encouraging to neither masters nor pupils\ but as four scholarships are awarded locaUy on the results of the Preliminary Examination , all concerned had toadapt themselves to the conditions

------------------ - ---In the lists showing the order of merit of the boys standing highest, J. A . Radway_ and I. R. B. Robinson are first and second respectively, while J. J . Niles, H. V. Webber, and V. R. Humphrey occupy the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions respectively, In the: Combined order of merit (boys and girls), J. A. Radway is first, and I. R. B. Robinson third. These two boys become the winners of the Government junior and one of the two Mitchell Scholarships foy boys. While it was the third occasion ri which both ot them were sitting for the Cambridge Prelimin~ry · Examination, their success is · praiseworthy, for the ~act rem ' ns • that they were still under fourteen years of age, candidates i .above this age not being eligible for scholarships. We congratulate them on their achievement, and wish them further s uch successes in the future. Niles, Webber and Humphrey are also highly deserving of our congratulations. This was their first a ttempt at the Examination. Certain boys, whose names do not appear above, should do very well this year.

The first h alf of the Junior L eague futures was played off this term . \Ve first met the Shamrock F.C., and drew with them-one goal all.

We should have won, havin~ lost several good chances of scoring. Our next was against St. Stanislaus F.C., on a ground that was under water. They were the lighter team, and until about eight minutes before the end of the garr.e were leading-3 goals to one, Our honour was !~uc~ed-.. This particular team had '• sai_d" things, and here they were domg them, We started a steady, mcessant, constantly unremitting_ bomba rdment of their goal during those last eight minutes. \Ve played under high pressure. We were drowning men, and had to catch at every straw. Our efforts were successful, 9.nd we started to try to win , but too late, We equalised. We played without Go~es' services in both of these matches, as he was away. We next met the M .S.C., and defeated "t~em 3- nil. The St. Barnabas F.C., however, contrary to our expectations beat us, 2-1. We all knew the cause of this and remedied it in the next match, Meeting the I.S.C. after, we drew with them-one all. Our next opponent was the V.F.C. They had defeated the I. S.C. by 10 goals to nil. True it was not quite the same team the Infantry had played aiainst us, but still it was expected they would defeat us in the same manner, A stubbornly contested game resulted in a draw, This was our hardest and best game. We surprised even ourselves, and taught ourselves what we could do. No wonder then, meeting the AS.C. some time after we defeated them 3- nil'.

Our next was a gainst the G.F.C. This we lost under hard circumstances by 2-one This was the first match in which a penalty was awarded· against us. The kick scored, \Ve were also gi,·en one, but

This year, for the first time, it was decided to run off the heats of some flat races on th~ day before the sports, which were held on Thursday, April 6th 1922, Accordingly, the heats of th e Senior, Junior, and under 13 I 00 and 220 yards were run on W ednesday.

On this day also, a trial was made of the boys enterin g for the lon g an d high jumps and only the first th ree boys in each jump were. selected for the finals on the next day, Some of the minor events, including Throwing the Cricket Ball , as well as heats of the sack and Three-l egged Races W.'!re also got through on Wednesday. · As a result of finishing these events on the day before the Sports, the programme was considerably shortened whereby there was a greater interval between the items, and th e sports were finished enrlier th an they were in previous years. This fart also allowed a fresh item, the House Relay race, to be included in the Programme.

Throwing the Cricket Ball (over 15) was won by Gomes (Percival) , who shied 86 yards 1 ft 4 inches. Close behind him were Shankland ( Percival) second and Stokes ( Raleigh) third, Barrow i though a favourite, fai led to make a place in this event. Among the Juniors Boilers i (Raleigh) was first with Vyfhuis i (Austin) second and Mc D avid (Raleigh) third. The sack race was WOJ1 by Ferdinand 11 nd the 1 hreeLegged Race by Pairaudeau and Gomes.

Stokes i, wl'o easily obtained the highest number of points in the Senior events, was Senior Champion while Hunter was Junior Champion.

Both did very well and Stokes' success came as a surprise as he was not the favourite.

The last event of the Sports was the Consolation Race, which was won by Chatterton, His Excellenl!y then distributed the prizes.

In conclusiqn, we beg to thank those who so kindly pre~ented us • with prizes and we also desire to thank Mrs. Hale and her daughters who took charge of bhe refreshments and managed their distribution.

This year · we made a new departure in Athletics. An Open Athletic Meeting- Cycle and Flat Races-was to take place on 3rd and 5th of June, and we were invited t:> enter a team for the Relay Race.

This race to be run by a team of four, consisted of a I00 yards, a 220, a 440 and a half.mile, and each of the four of us must run one of these e':'cnts. We decided to compet·e, and sent as our team Mr. Lewis, Stokes, Fernandes and Sharples ii. Mr. Lewis was our 1920 and 1921 chamnion, Stokes is our 1922, Fernandes , the runner-up for the championship, and Sharples the winner of our school half-mile.

The · boys wanted lo lake part in the other open events of the meeting, and this was agreed to, after some discussion. They were sanguine. Gomes, our Football Captain, was to race for us in the cycle races.

We hoped much from him, and he gave us much. He had already represented the Colony.1n Trinirfod v.ith great success, and we hoped he would be even more successful "at home." We were not disappointed in our hopes. He did more than anyone could have expected in his fondest and wildest imaginings.

The team begal'\ to '' train," as we ;.iolitely term it. In this nection, Sergeant-Major Manly helped us by word and by deed. cannot too much praise him for this, as well as for past services. say no more about this since his · servjces to us are like P,ood needing no bush.

He is subject to a sort of hero-worship by the smaller fry of the school. and nol a few have apprenticed themselves to him, dauled by the light of his succem:s, They will be successful if they remember the saying that Rome was not built in a day; that success comes only ·as the result of · hard persistent work. If they are prepared to do this, then let them persevere ; if not, then direct their youlhful energies and enthusiasms lo other undertakings.

\Ve arc still children enough to reserve the sweetest and best for the last·-Gomcs' riding. We will not repeat all the nice and Aattering thing~ that have been said of him, as they may do harm, rather than good. Still he can rest assured that we are none the less proud of him. because we are silent. He is one of us, and one who has done something that no other cyclist has as yet c!one in West Indian cy~le racing. This in itself is something to be proud of ; but we admire more the spi1 it that made him "stick to it," mad~ him gna,h ~is .teeth and hang on as it were, when it was so easy to give up. This 1s the spirit we would see in all our lads. We wish him many more triumphs nnd success s in the years to come.

Cameron:· A fast back, but lacks the powerful kick of one.

The first event of the fir~t day was th 100 yards Aat, and run in heals. Unfortunately, the track was h avy, due to the heavy showers of the morning, nevertheless, each ol our representatives was place~ in the fina ls. Eventually we won this, the 220, the 440, the Boys R cc, and the day Race- lire race of the meeting for us. ln this, ll,c Rcla Race, wc secured first place in three of the four eventsthe exception being th 440. Our success in it was due to the Jplendid running of Sharples, who ran the last and most important. the half-mile.

He st rided beautilully and " stuck to it·· manfully and well.
