ED ITORIAL. We regret that last term we incurred a break in the steady publication of our magazines. But the anxiety which was evinced 9vet· the Intercolonial Cricket Tournament, the excessive joy at the safe t·eturn of our Principal, and the great strain camred by the assiduous practice of the boys for the House Matches, afford us a fitting excuSP. Anyhow, through the splendid co-operation of the boys, especially those in the Upper Forms, we have produced :a "mag" which we hope will be satisfactory to oui· clients.

Once more we are able to state that our record in numbers has been kept up. This shows to what great extent our efforts towards the improvement of youthful minds are approved by outsiders. It also directly reflects great credit on the Staff, which, incomplete. ai:. it was, had to strive against !o!Cveral impending difficulties. The .addition of Mr ]'. Daniel, B.Sc., to the Staff' will, we hope, prove a l!!Uccessful one. He has already shown himself to be a strict and energetic master, and as he has secured t he confidence .of nearly the whole school, good results from his teaching cannot be considered as being too far away.

We feel justly proud that Quet>n's was well represented at t he la.<rti Intercolonial Sports (June, 1922), at the Intercolonial Cricket Toul'Dament (tleptember, 192:!), and at t he Intercolonial Football Tournament (January and February ,1923).

We cannot close our editorial without thanking those Old Boyg.

,of a tablet bearing the names of those who ham fallen in the Gl'eat War. Even those whom we esteem our dearest, are at some time or another forgotten. But so long as Queen's College exists the tablet will exist, and therefore also the memory of the departed ones.

Several men, courageous men too, fear death. Bacon says : " Men fear death children fear to go into the dark. " Our boys, however, when they heard their country's call, cast all fear of death to thE' winds and responded. Some have returned, some have fallen. '\,Ve do honour those who havc> returned, but above all, we most gloriously honour those who have found a resting place in the fields of Elysium. Generations will succeed generations, nations will supplant nations, but we will hope that "Their name will live for evermore."

Just, as we were about to i,;end the magazine to Press, we learnt with great regret of the death of Mr. A. Somers Cocks, Headmaster -0f Harrison College, Barbados. We extend our sincerest sympathy to Harrison's on their sad loss.

L. de Lackalom, the victim of that di,;a,;trous accident three wars ago, is at pre;;ent seriously indi,;posed in the Public Hospital. \Ve wish him a ,;peedy recovery.

N. E. Cameron and A. G. McLean have left us frorn the ::,ixth.

The former came to us in January, 191 i, as a Government Junior ~cholar, from Christ Church Anglican ::,chool. He stands out for his great capacity for steady work. In 1918, he obtainecl First Cla:,;.-; Honours at the Junior Locals with five distinctions, thus creating a record. H e attempted the Senior the following year ancl gained l-lecond Class-Honours. He · then entered the ::,ixth anrl specialised 1n }lathematics. His first attempt in 1920 was reported . a.-; promising and he won the 8cholarship in 1921. The repot"t on his work of that year was the best .we have ever had in ;,,fathematics. on the field, Cameron was an energetic full-back.

A. G. McLean came to us in 19U as tL Prima1·v tlcholar and has spent eight year,; at Queen's.

Though physic,tliy unfit to be -a great footballer or cricketer, }1cLean turned up regularly at the Cricket practices of his House and never mis,;ed a House match in which Percival was engaged. In thi,;, and indeed in many other respect$, McLean is a model to many of our present boys. He was

P.ractise hard at your cricket and football, learn your scl1ool-wo1·k as well as you can, and try• to avoid the detention class as m11ch as possible, and at the · cml of the scl1ool-vear you will at least ha,·e the satisfaction of knowing that y;n lrnw tl'ied your best.

Tl1e new school-year dates from ~eptember, 1922. Our l1oys made a rather good start, many of them taking good place(; in tl1eir forms. Our detention Ji ·ts were fairly small, and on the-whole, we were gett ing on with a substantial ga.in in points ea.eh week. Suddenlr, howeYer, some of our boy>' started to slack in their school -work, our detention lists grew larger, ancl, .at the end of the term, after subtra<:ti11g the points gained, we· had actually lost two 1nrn<1rec1 and sixty points. Boys of Pn· cival House, this sort of 1J1ing should not rontinve. It is sur· prising that most of these points ai·e 101st by only a few boy.·, . the very boys who can scareely ever gain auy for t1ie Hou.·e ..

You slackers can certainly refrah1 from getting into the dete1{, tion class as often as you do. lt is discoura~ing to the other boys to find tl1at the points which liave taken them so long to , gain l1ave boon so quickly tl,rown away by you. The fone that is wasted on losb1g these 1,ob1ts ran surely be better ..,pent. It is not too late, however, for every boy to regain the points he has losl. EYeJ'YOne of us must feel it 0111· duty to make our House first in e,·erytJ1jng. L<~t us tl1en try our leYel best. Let us then 1.:mt forth our best efforts jn the school-room as well as on the field. The Games' Committee decicled that there should be two rounds, the winner of the greatest mun, ber of -point.<:i to be adjudged the winner. It was not, however, granted to any of -Urn members of the Committee to foresee the fact that the rainy season would set in. A few clays before the matches were concluded, tbP. rain came with a vengeance all(l stopped })la,y at the rrucinl moment. 1Raleigh House was pre· vented from })laying the last two games h1 the competition, which, by the way, coulrl have been easily won by the lads, thus gaining-for us the Shiei(l. Pe1·cival and Austin were tied with 3fi points eacll; Raleigh was last with 30 points. Percival had. also two matches to play, and a. they thus had a theoretical adnmtagc, it was unanimously agreed by the Committee that the Shield should go to Percival. For to have played off the Jnakhes in 199...3 woulrl have occasioned a clash of the 1922 wit~ ilie 1923 matclies, thus causb.1g great inconvenience. So once more Raleigh IIouse was prevented from winning a shield by; natural causes.

The sports are ex~cfod to come off shortly, and it is indeed gratifying to state that the boys of Raleigh House are train1 ing seriously. Last year we came very nea,r obtaining t,he shield. We held the lead until the last item of the programme was reached, when mainly through the fact that w~ did not possess a good half-miler, we lost the trophy by the very narrow margin of three points. Anyon,e would have laughed to scorn the atl!lctic 13trcngth of the House b.nmediat.:lly before the Sports took place. The 15th day of January was an important one in the history ,of the College, for on that day there wa'! unveiled the brazen tablet tha~ i~ to c.ommemornte for evel' those Old Boys who so willingly gave their lives m the Great War of 1914- 1918. The relatives of the -fallen. were present, as also were several of those Old Boys who had -0ontributed towards the cost of the tablet and some very prominent members of the community. Reginald Popham Lobb, arrived and wa,; ~scorted by the Staff to the left hand wall of the main entrance, where the tablet is erected. The Principal gave a shol't introductory speech concerning the tablet and its object. After a suitable response by His Excellency, t he Union Jack, which ob:;cured the tablet, was removed and it was laid bare to the sprctators. '.I'lwn there ensued a deep silence whieh was broken only by the clarion notes of the bugles as thry i,,ounded the La:;t Post,. The um-riling ceremony thus ended, His Excellency departed. It is interesting to compare the charges for t uition with the present day charge of .b51 per annum. The hours •Of attendance were somewhat longer than those of the present day. (The Colony House was situated at the southwest corner of the present Law Courts.)

Of the two tutors, Rev. W. Hamilton became Rector of ·St.Peters, Leguan, in 1846. He died in 1851 at the early :,age of 34, and was buried at Enterprise in that Island.

Rev. R.L- Webber became Archdeacon of Demerara and ·1ies in the churc_h yard of St. Sidwell's, Lodge.

In the Royal Gazette of October 10th, 1844, there appear. ed a notice inviting applications for the post of Writing . and Arithmetical Master. Applicants were required to give a test of their ability and a specimen of their penmanship.

On May 31st, 1845, there was published an extract from the minutes of the Court of Policy giving the names , of the first ten Exhibitioners, natives of the Colony, who were entitled to free tuition of the College. Their names were :- T. S. Richardson, T. B. Robson, H. Coxall, G. B. ,W. -P layter, C. C. King, W. L. M'Bean, W. B. Taylor, H. R. · Odwin, s. Douglas, L. M'Kenzie.

The filling up of these Exhibitions was at the disposal ,of the Governor and the Court of Policy.

Besides the two science boys, there were four offering )fa.thematics, A .. A. B. Clrnrles for the second time, GlHl 8. '. Jaikai·an, C. 'l.'. DC'lmy and S. L. Gauaway for the first time. The examiners decided that Shnrples' ·w ork was the best and of snfliciently high a standard for him to be awarded the Rcholarship.

last term. But we did not win a single match. Om· display should not be looked upon with disdain, for it is to be remem hered that we had not a proper practice wicket.. The only practic~ wicket that was available was one on which t.he ball kicked dangerously rn 1hat rhe players had to try ati.d protect their bodiP.s i-athet· than their wickets. Obviously such a wicket tended to ~poil rath1:Jr than to develop the cricket ability in the lads. However, in the face of such hardships , we came on steadily, and when we were called upon to play om· last match of the seitson, which took place last term, we nearly defeatf'd our opponents, the Malteenoes Jricket Club. Our opponents batted fir~t and were dismissed for 123 runs, R,. Morris being the most successful bowler. We responde<l with 116, thus losin2 by the nanow margin of 7 runs. M. E. Reid rlayed tt smashing i,•nings for 24, C. T. Denn~' a patient on r. for 22. The other batsmen to reach double figureg were the Pt·incipal (10), the captain S. P . Fernandes (11), S. Garraway (14) and P. Leung (11 ). Anyhow we hope to regain 0\11' Jost prestige next seaso11 .

HOUSE MATCHES, 1922.

The House Cricket ·l'.lalches were not begun until after the lntercolouial Tour11ament.. Owing to the privilege which was kindly grant• ed the Colle'le by the G.O.C. Committee, a great, nnmber of the buys were enabled to see the matches, and they thus had the opportunity of learning a little ll1Q1'0 about the game. No wcnder as toe Tomnament ended anxiety waxed hot over the ultimat~ issue of the House Matches, Austiu House had been the winner of the 1921 Cricket Shield. Tts 1st XI. was of gi mt i;trength compared with the elevens of the other Houses, but it bHd the weakest 2nd XI. Raleigh Home was just the opposite, a, ve1·y stl'oµg 2nd XI. but an impoverished first. Percival had an equal combination, a good 1st an(l an equally gcod 2nd XI, Austin House was fir@t opposed to Percival 'Ihe 1st XI. match resulted in a draw, the 2nd XI. House. match was won by Perciv:11 House. Raleigh Hou.;e next met Austin House. 'l'he latte1· won the ht YI. and lost the 2nrl XI. Percival Rale:gh clo1wd the first tound. Ra le'gh lost the 1st XI. FOOTBALL. Our supporters last year expected that we "ould win the medals in the Russell Cup vompetition; and that if we did not win the ,Jnnior League Cup we would at lea.st be the runners up . . One of tho rules of the former competition was that footballers who bacl pfayed more than three times in the Senior Competitions were debarred.

On account of this rule th9 St. Stanislaus F.C., the Shamrock F.C., and be Q.C.F ,C. wel'e the three team i thit suffered no loas. As we were the best of the:e three teams we naturally expected to win the cup.

We failed to gain either cup. In the first roun<l of the Russell Cup matches, we defeated the St. Barnabo.s F.C. But in the semi final against the Victot·i,i l!'.O., we were knocked out when victory seemed almost within our grasp. Scoring first, we continued to lead until about fifteen minub>s before the end of the game. The Victoria }' C. then suddenly rallied, and before we knew "!:ere we were, they bad e<1ualised and subse11uently won.the game. In the Junior League Competition we could only obtain the fifth place out of ten teams. I do not purpose oft'al'ing excuses for our defeats. I shall simply state why we h-ave not done hotter and shall ofter remedies; so that when next season starts, our faults will hJ.ve disappeared.

In the first place, more system should Lave been u~ed in the selection of the tea.ms. When the entries for thA Cup matches close, a. probable X [ and a reserve X [ should be E>elected, the forwards of th,e former Xl must play in practice llla.tches, with defend€rs (goal·

·way, the probable forwards will learn to play together while the

pl'Obable halves and backs will learn to tackle aad clear, the probable go:il-keeper being at the same time put to the test, Practice matches between the two teams should thus put the men into form. Immedi. ately one of the finally selected team shews signs of falling off in form, · or if, for some reason or other, it is impossible for him to play, .the reserve who plays in the same position should be promoted. The ·form and House matches should greatly assist the captain in selecting the two elevens. On account of this lack of system, Shankland ..kept goal for us pluckily when there ware Donald and Hazlewood, ·whose superior abilities remained undiscovered until rather late. ·-Stok1:is also led the attack when Barrow (iJ would have been the better man for the position of centreThe Captain should see that the team is physically trained. (Here "Sergt. Major Manly could render us invaluable aid.) The wings ·should systematically practise corner kicking. The wing-halves should practice throwing the bell almost immediately it goes to ·" touch." (When a half delays in throwing off, he allows the halves of the opponents to gather round his wing and inside men,) L ast but not least the centre should practise receiving wing passes.

CRITICISM OF THE ELEVEN.

D onald :- A very agile goal-keeper, · but he should not fumble so long with the ball and sboul!l practise kicking out to the forwards from goal, Gomes :-A good captain, but he should hustle his men ~ore. A a back, his tackling was excellent, his clearing justly earned the applause of the crowd, but his powerful kicking should have been moderated to snit his forwards.

Melville(i) :- An able back with

a good kick.

Srnith (ii) :- A promising half-back. His pa.ssing is very accurate and his tackling is sure ; he throws the ball from touch with judgmeut anrl sticks to his man ,1s though he were hia brother. Should improve this season . .

..Mr. L ewis :- A good centre half.

He uses his speea with advan tage, but should swing the be.11 to his wings when the defence of the opponents concentrate on the centre.

Harewood (i) } Harewood (right wing) dribbles too much but centres well. Chee-a· Yow \iii) left wing played well, but was "" Chee-a-Tow (iii) too slow for a wing.

-\(·Cameron, • weeks, *Lawrence (i ) and Grant (i) also represented the school on various occasions, Cameron was a fast and energetic back, but his kicking was not sure. Weeks, though slow on the ball, we.s the best shot in the forward line- Lawrence <l.ribbled too much, but was a good shot. Grant (i) aent in beautiful centres and long shots from the left wing.

Since the above article was written, the College played against . the H.M-8. Citrlew, the first match of the year (19:!3). Our opponents were heavier and faster on the ball than we were, and so, after an exciting game, towards the end of which we bucked up considerably, we lost by three goals to two.

Rising from my bed on the footstool, I proceed to let everybody in the house kno1v that I have survived last night's fted (the cat's food and mine) and that I have forgiven. them for their highly unjust treatment of me. Fancy licking a. dog like me for stealing a stupid old cat's dinner, hardly a mouthful besides, and lJOt nearly deserving o: the lamming I got and with a slipper too.

Wl1y do I object to a slipper especially? Well, a slipper, . especially a leather soled one, being so broad, makes you feel all over and consequently you have to lick yourself all over. Whereas now a switch or a buckle-strap hurts in one place and you an deal with it more easily.

Now rnme cats are all rig t; Isaac is by no means a bad fellow, though common Petite now is quite a nice girl and a good sport though she is perhaps too mur·h inclined to favour Isaac's rude advances.
