A pavilion he.11 been erected on our Grounds, the Combin ed Court having kindly voted us tue necesQttry money. While it may not be as large as those on the grounds of some of the bigl-{er Clubs, it serves our purpose handsomely, and we are proud o[ it. The House Football Season opened at the beginning of ·last term, and ·was, beyond doubt, the most interesting witnessed since the inception of the House system. This ·was not at all unexpected, as, with the advent of a third House, and one, to boot, which was quite capable of giving a good account of itself, it was clear that greater life would be infused into the game.

Our first match was against the "C's." According to the new arrangements, first and second eleven matches were played the same afternoon. The Juniors played from four to five o'clock, and the Seniors from five to six. In the second eleven match a goal was scored .against us in the early stages of the game. No further scoring took place, and so we lost by one goal to nil.

After a very hard fight we won the fir st eleven match as we had lost the second. This was our only win in the first round of the competition! We lost both of our matches against "B " House. Our second eleven had an exactly similar fate as in their previous match. That of our first was perhaps even worse - 5 goals to 1. Our defence seemed incapable of stopping the opposing forward line, while our forward line could do little by way of combination. "B " Bouse thoroughly deserved its win, but w:hile it is not our

'.!'his omi~s1on has been purposely made, for not only would 1t be unfa ir to do so , but it would be an ext remely difficult task, since every one was obsessed with the one idea of doing his best for h1s House and succeeded , in some measure, in doing so.

Some boys cannot keep out of the Detention it seems. ,They glory in it, take a pride in it, and strut about ,yith I quite a manl y air on the strength of four or fiv.e ~etentwns per week, with _a~ occ~sional report to th~ P:mc1pal. We too would have Jomed m the general admll'atwn for these fine birds, but for the fact that they lose us points, ~nd lose heavily too. sense of honour. They would seem repentant, yet on th e next detention day, their names head the list. Punis hment - mere physical pain- is useless with these fine lads.

in the Tug-of-War, Junior and Senior-we lost both. We must congratulate Edwai:,ds on his jump of four feet seven inches which was very good for his age. Our sympathy mu st also go to Boilers i, who was a victim of very hard luck. Stokes i, surprised us, and we hope that he may keep up the credit of his House in the matter of the Senior Cha mpionship, which 'B' House haR, nearl y always won. A clear wind and a sturdy pair of legs are the thin gs needed.

Thoug h this is not the right place, yet we cannot refrain from eongratulating Stokes i. Grant i, McKenzie i, and Hill on their play in the foot-b a ll matches. Keep it up, and you will be a credit not only to your House, but to your School.

Take the case of V- of III A. He ·has been repor te d four times, he has lost fift y-ei g ht points, more than he can ever gain, were he to remain at Queen's until he was as old an Methuselah. A week's hard work, if hard enoug h to win first place for the house gains onl y ten points, and very hard work it is too. Then th ere •is R - who i3 onl y in the second form , yet he has accounted for as many as fif ty -six points. He is ever in detention, if not for work, then for conduct. Thrice has ·he been reported to the principal to be caned, but all this has done him no good. He has never g ained any points for his hou se, though he is capable.

This is the examination Term. Examinations are not events that are heralded with rejoicing s, rather the reverse.

No list of the bad-behaved can be complete wi t hout But, it is somethin g necessary , and therefore must be met H - of Form VI. He is al ways misbehaving , a nd he has with a smiling face and qui et resolution! We wish all the cost us forty-eight points. We can speak of others who lads, whether of B, A, or C, s uccess in their examinations , but special success to our boys. Learn your lessons and bet ween them, have lost to date of writing four hun d red and seventy-eight points, while t h e correspondin g gain is onl y there is nothing to fear.

A fair number of new boys came to College this term.

These boys were divided between the three houses. The , boys picked for C House were Spencer and Fung-a-Fat.

The struggle for the Football Shield, which took place this Term, was rather exciting-. In the fir.st round, C House won beth the First and Second Eleven Matches against B House and the Second Eleven Match against A House thus gaining 14 points. In the second, the Greens won the First Eleven Match against B House, and drew with A House in the First Eleven Match, hence C House finished off with 23 ooints. A House having beaten B Hou ::;e, which was left behind, tied with the Greens so that a Final was played . This match was won by A House after a hard game, by 2 goals to 1.

Only two Cricket House Matches have been played so far. First and second XI Matches were played between A and C Houses on the same day, C House won the First XI., Match but was just beaten by the A House second XI.

Last term, the House did not finish with many points to the bad. In all, 532 points were lost, whilst 323 were gained so that C House was left with 209 points lost.

Things are slightly better this term. 573 points were lost and 407 t were gained leaving 157~ points lost.

I was o.nxious to keep bee,, and so 1nrnrn,detl my father to advance me a anm of money t::i purchase a hive, I hoped to be ablo to obto.in enough honey to recoup him for his outlay.

I obtained a hive of bees, and on my inspection found that there were six framos (lnite full. 'rhey yielded me'n. dozen bottles of honey.

I then had the frames propedy clen.ned and wired, and foundat ions fixed for the bees to work on. I hope to obtain a further supply of honey from these frames in August, which is the next honey season. j

When the ha.t::hing season is on, a hive bas to be carefully wa tched, for if another queen bee shollld be hatched, tbe bees swarm and seps.ra.te, some following the new, others remaini o~ with the old queen. If other queen boes are observed after Lhe hatching season, they are taken away to form the foundation of other hives, eo that it is evident that bee-keeping, if carefully studied and properly attend l'd to, can bec-Jme a. very profitable pastime. '

Gen erally, a hive consists of a v.ooden box For those who deli ght in figur£s, its demensions are 20 ins, by 15 ins. by 12ins.

Buch a box is a sin gle hive, and contains usually eiaht frames. If there is a large addition to the hive from the hatchin; of new bees, a second storey of similar size and of the ea.me numb:r of fram es is added , There is also fixed on the top of the first etorey wire netting of ~uch fi_neness of _mes~ that only the worker bee c'ln pass through, Tb1s adding .to of hives 1s carried out, so that a larger supply of honey may be obtamed from ·one Live. Some large hives have as much as three or four storeys.

I find that the b_est bees are th11 It,dian bees, so that I try to keep ~nly_ these . . As I said before, great attention to tbe bees is necessary, if a,~armmg.1s ti be pravented . Eo ;ne people a re afraid t:> approich a.. hive, but if ?ne goes very carefully and with no fu ss, there is very · little danger, smce bees, when not provoked, are not vicious. Should they become so, they must be smoked to dull their senses.

During the honey sen.son, the honey is collected. To do this, s.ome bee-keepers appron.ch the hive wearing a veil about their faces to prevent ~he bees st!nging ~hem. Opening the hive, they smoke out the bees, Ut!lng a. special appliance made for the purpose. This smoker has n _smal! hollows attached, an] by its means smoke is pumped into the oren b1ve .. The smoke, as I said before, dulls the bees, and they fly .out .of the hive. The opertttor then takes out one of the wire frames , which if the bees have been working well, and there was no disease in the h.ive, o.vercrowded with honey. This honey is contained in beautiful s1x-s1d~d cell~ r,nad~ of white wa~. The cells, except those crushed, are bmlt qmte regularly and methodically, and makes one W?nder how the bees managed to build the cells so evenly and closely ' without making any mistakes.

The ~perator now cuts off as much of this wal as possible, This wax ~ontiv ns the greiter part of the honey. The wire frame yet oont~1os some honey. This is extructed by placing the frame in a epeo1ol piece of apparatus, eo as to cause the frame to revolve rapidly.

The honey is thus whisked out of the cells, It is strained from the wax, and bottled. The wax is boiled down to be sold.

It can easily bA understood that quite a large number of eggs is hatched during a season. · An ordinary worker lives for only abont aix to eight weeks, and yet one does not observe an y diminution in number of bees in a healthy hive. Moreover, besides tha natural death of the · bees, many are lost through other cn.uEes. Thus frogs kill a lat·ge nnmber. They lay in wait under the hi ves , and cn.tch n.s many as thay can, swallowing them quickly, When n. Lee stiog3, and it is only the worker that can sting, Rhe injects formic acid with the sting. A stran ge fact about th.e sting is that it is a living sting. Thus if one pull<J out a 11ting from any part of the body and places it on another part, the sting begins to penetra.te this part of th e body of its own accord. It is not quite settled whether a bee CII.D live after it has once lost its stin g.

Some say that a bee stings at the cost o[ its life, others sa.y not.

Whichever view is right, the sting of a bee is not a pleo.sn.nt matter.

But worse than this is the manner of certain of the boys-a small number fortunat~ly actually at sc hool no\\'. of regarding the magazine with nonchalanc~, ~nd . of refusing to accept a copy when the genera~ chstnbut1on is being made to the sc hool. Such an act1011 canne1t b_e too warmly censured .. Tn the case of the ~mailer )'o~:s. 1t may be attributed to ignorance but when such peculiant1 es are exhibited by bigger boys who should know better. one is perplexed, and can only say that the~· are, in the highest degree, absurd.

The questions "Why is a school Magazine published?" and "For what ideals does it stand?" mu st have, at some time or other, suggested themselves· to every secondary school boy. As a rule, the· answers are never ventured immediately, but are learnt gradually as time goes on. and experience increases.

One is too prone to consider his school Magazine as a monopoly of the present school. It is not. "Old Boys are as much connected with the Magazine of their "old " schocl as are those under whose direct management it then happens to be. The school Magazine fulfils its purpose completely only when past and present boys alike find in it about an equall y large amount of matter of interest to them: Of course this is the ideal school Magazine, and anything that is ideal is either rarely or not at all met with.

A school Magazine is the most efficient link betwee n the past and the present. The several is3ues should f\ot merely· be read -and then committed to the \,Vaste paper baske't-but sh'ould be preserved and treasured. If issue be added to issue a book is soon formed, the value of which in one's spare moments is immense, and with :vhose aid one can, in later years . recall the days of school-life, days-so we are told- which are to be numbered among tne happiest and th~ ·)Jest that one can ever spend.

Current sc hool news will always be of interest to all.

But contributions and general news should be so assorted t hat the school, past and present, is represented, for, by natme, one is bound to be more.interested in the life of a contemporary, than in that of some unknown who "reigned" before or after.

It is instructive to see how far our school Magazine is ideal One very soon comes to the conclusion that it is anything but ideal. There is, indeed, a "Corner " reserved for - Old Boys, but how far is it utilised'! We know little or noth'i,ng of by far the greater part of our "Old" Boys. The result is that . whereas we are willing to give this "Corner " as many pages as we may reasonably be expected to allow, we seldom get news to take up much more than a page. S0metime3 the ••Old '' Boys Corner covers half a page!

The "Old " Boys alone are responsible for this. One h~s heard many boys on leaving promise to keep in touch with the Old School by subscribing to the magazine and

ELEVEN. . The Matc~es in the J uui0r League Competition have revealed cer· ~am weakness m the school team which art} worth considering. Speak· mg generally, thG fault lies in the fact that the team does not work to· get~er sufficiently well. There is. a lack of combination, without which no team can hope to do well, no matter how good are its individ· ual members. This is probably largely due to the fact that the team seldom gets the chance of playing tog&ther as a team, except in the League matches.. Our practice, therefore, is not enough. There must be a real determmation on th& part of the players to combine, to pll\y as a team and not as individual unitd· ·

It is just the use made of those few free seconds tbat decide whether a good try is made, and possibly a goal scored, or not, The halves did fair work, Melville in parHcular showing good promise, but they must learn to kick to their forwa,da, a11d to mark and stick to the opposing forward s.

Goffies aud Cameron at beck played an excellent go.me on several occasions, but tha backs too must kick with more judgment, A powerful kick that sends the ball sailing up the field anywhere may look very fine, but ii:! really of lit.tie use, since it merely gives tho back on the other side a splendtd chance for a free kick. It is for better to eend the ball half the distance, provided that it is placed at a lorward's feet. Accuracy in kicking should be aimed at first, force can be added later. Of course where the opponents are pressing in front of goal, the ball must bo cleared immediatflly and got anywhere.

As a whole the tenm put up a. game fight against better teams on several occasions, and Shankland kept goal very pluckily, but the re· suits ought to have been better, and they will be if. th e team ~·ill only make a real attempt to secure better combination.

ON THE BARREN GROUND. 1 have a suspicion that many of our boys require a warning against too frequent speaking and answering on Barren Ground .

What is this Barren Ground ? An enticing, attractive ground ! not a very firm ground, but one on which speakers grow exceed. ingly eloquent. It is really barren but still it can ·produce a sort o( intellectual scrub and brain moss generally consolidated into what are called guesses, Moreover it is a ground which is specially attractive to the lazy, shirking b:,y, as it is so easy to settle on it. There are no great forests to be cleared ; the ground is open, wide and spacious and well fitted for intelledual roaming. . To settle on fertile ground takes a deal of effort, but to settle on the barren ground takes comparatively none ; and when once an inhabitant of it, there is little to do but live idly on, for tillage · is futile . This barren ground is known well enough to teachers, who can gene'rally tell a boy that he is on it before the boy himself

realises where he is.

When a boy speaks from the barren ground the speech has certain known characteristics, which, itstead of enumerating here, I leave for the inhabitants or frequenters of this ground to note for themselves, This ground, as I have said, 0ffers attractions, and when a boy has once been on it he is .much tempted to return, and this temptation to return is so much the stronger if he has alreadly benefitted by answering from it. And so he may pass from being an occasional visitor into th e state of a frequente1路 . . Bllt a few have yet fuller rights and privileges in connection with this ground, they are domiciled inhabitants. The teacher soon recognises an inhabitant. Some of them probably all of them, have marks. Where are the marks ? How are they known ? I think they are a sort of secret service mark which I am not at liberty to disclose.

I think I have said enough to let these o::c1sional visitors, frequenters and inhabitants of the barren ground know that they are known, that they cannot hide, I expose enough by itself to cause them to give up the land? I have ventured exposure, because it is so seldom that those of whom I write confess or admit that they are speaking on the barren ground. Just a few years ago, however, I received a splendid announcement from an upper school boy that he w:ts answering from this ground. The aunou'n cment was made in a geGgraphy class, and I cannot say to what extent, if at all, the fact of work having- been done not longbeforeon the Barren Grounds around Hudson Bay supplied him with the courage of making his declaration. If I remember aright, the climatic and industrial conditions of a certain area were under discussion, and this boy gave his opin ion on some JJOint. As his view was quite novel and in my opinon incorrect, I asked him on what ground he made his statements. Oh ! he exclaimed "on the barren ground"? From that day my interest in that ground was much stimulated. I then began to see more clearly what a really large percentage of answers and statements came from standing on the barren ground. It was through being on the barren ground that a boy referred to the equator as an alligator when he wrote that the equator was an imaginary alligator extending around the globe. There is a daily supply of guesses from the barren ground.

In the good old days a slender rod could cause a speedy retirement from the barren ground, But .times change, o tempora o mores the world is grown wiser, they say, both men and boys,and a word is enough for the wise.

Our Foot-ball s eason opened at the commence ment of this te rm. <_?reat i?~erest ':"as centred• in the fixtures of the Junior League \..:ompehhon owmg to the large number of " new " clubs 't'hic h had come forward to contest for the trophy. Some of our boys were disappointed at not being asked to play , but after all every boy could not be picked."

Our first match was against the G. F . C. We los t by 3 goals t(!) 1, but when it is remembered tha t against us were pitted pla yers who take part in the Senior competitions, we may well congratulate ourselves on our performance. Our team s howed up well , but our forward line might have been a bit stronger. Nex t we were opposed to Christ Church F. C, In this match we scored our first and only- so far- win, defeating our opponents by 4 goal s to nil: Our next meeting was with the Everton s. who defeated us by 2 goals to 1, The only other match which we have played up to now was against a team representing the Victoria F .

C, which as regards weight, was by far our superior. Moreover, we had _. not our full teaai . The game was more or less of a kick and rush nature. We lost by 3 goals to J. In this match Gomes ii got his ear injurP.d. This was the first Junior L ea gue fixture to be played on our ground.

It must be mentioned that Mr. L . D . Peterkin, our new master, not only materially assisted us at right full-back , but by his cheerful, and sportsmanlike spirit lriept the team in hopes e ven when it was faced with defeat. Our team was also grea tly heartened by the presence of our Frincipal and Mrs. Moulder.

We beg to thank them, espeeially Mrs. Moulder for the interest which ·they take in our games.

With a choice burley poney and a waggon to suit the porpose, and a house which has a part downstairs to intertain my patients.

A minister with the diplomas behind my name, and to have a Church and Parsonage. The church must be large ·and has a tower.

Why I like to be a doctor because there are many complaints in this Gorgetown such as :-Filaria, Consumption, Rheumatism, and not many doctors sufficient that count to stop these diseases.

Upon this the master called me a "blithering idiot " and further told me that though I might not know what that meant yet it was good Anglo-Saxon. · Another day, nurse stayed away, and I had to dress myself, so I. was late for school. That dreadful• man asked me kindly whether my nurse was late with the bottle. He spoke so kindly that I was emboldened to answe!, and told him the truth. This caused all those unfeeling brutes to laugh, and tease me more than ever.

He felt the pain-I was glad, served him right.

I do not like boys, and I detest Queen's boys. They .are rough, coarse brutes. They rumple your hair, muddy your shoes, and tear your clothes . They are always fighting, fighting all day long. I am sorry Pa sent i:ne to such a school, where all are ruffians. - The first time ·. I went there they all held and whipped me, t.houg~ I d1d them nothing. Then they were aJways playi!'lg tricks ?n me, such as hiding my books, and putting gum m my hair.

Have you ever had gum put in your hair?. You.would not like it. Your hair all sticks toirether, and it pains dreadful when Y?.1! go to comb it.
