first, as usual. If success is to be gauged from the stren¥th of the available teams, the Cup lies between the Fifth and Lower Fourth (IV B).

The water pipe on the cricket field has been changed fr(?m South to North this term. This will enable us to obtam a bettel' flow of water for the pitch than hitherto during the Cricket Season. . Mrs. E. R. D. Moulder has presented the Games' Club wit~ .a flag t? b~ flown from the flagstaff attached to the pavilion. Send-major Manly having returned to the Colonv has taken chanre of the gymnasium hitherto under the charge of Mr. P. Wade. Many of the bovs continue to take advantage of the valuable training which it affords them.

Each borrower is now required to have a card, and this change of system ought to give improved results. The books in the Reference Section are left open, and access can always be had to them. Our Principal has very kindl:v presented a number of books from the library of the late Mr. T. H.K. Moulder, who held an appointment as Senior - Master for a short time in 1919. Most of these books are of a very instructive nature, and have much strengthened our collection. They include books on literary and scientific subjects as well as on games, and an encyclopredia.

At present there are a sufficient number of chess enthusiasts to make the books .on this game very welcome.

Many of our Fifth and Sixth form boys who at present n~glect the library may with advantage make use of it. It is more especially for them that the more serious literature has been placed in the library. Of our papers, the "Spectator" seems to be very little read, and the question of substituting another paper for it may have to be considered. .

At the commencement of Term F. Shankland was elected Captain of Cricket, vice C. V. Lewis, S. Jaikaran (i,) Secretary to the Games' Club, vice C.H. Ewing Chow, .and H. Gomes, Captain of Football (re-elected). A. A. B. Charles was also elected to a vacancy on the Game's Club Committee.

To the vacancies among the Prefects (formerly styled Monitors) the Principal appointed A. A. B. Charles and S. Jaikaran .. and A.G. McLean was appointed Head Prefect.

THE STAFF-Mr. M. L. Hutchinson resigned his acting appointment during the August Holidays for the purpose of proceeding to England to study Medieine. As an acting master he was no less popular than in the days when he graced the Sixth Form. Kind and patient, Mr. Hutchinson. was ever willing to give a listening ear to the humblest in the school, and to place his experience an:d knowledge entitely at his disposal. As a result of his departure, there has been created in the school a void which can hardly be filled. Mr. C. V. exceeded the supply-and the large increase in the number of boys, we have ventured to incl'ease the number of copies from three hundred to three hundred and fifty.

Two of the articles contained in this term's issue are from Old Boys-Messrs. R. C. G. Potter and F. M. Kerry.

This augurs well for the future, as it appears that we have in some measure unlocked the closed door of silence.

HOUSE NOTES. PERCIVAL (A} HOUSE.

As om heading shows, we shall in the future cease to he known simply as "A" House. The good old synonym will, however, be retained after our new name-Percival in accepting which we must remember that it is our duty to make it as famous as we and those who were before us have made the former one.

The Guiana Scholarship has been won by Cameron of our House. We offer him our heartiest congrntnlations and wishes for future success.

This term we have lost some of our best boys whom we can ill afford to spare. Our Football and Cricke't teams have Jost the services, ungrudgingly given, of Gomes I, EwingChow i, Too Chung, and McLean ii. All of these have ever considered it a duty and a pleasure to play for their House, and this is the spirit which we desire that our boys should take with them into the world. Unity of purpose will ever show its usefulness in the future as it has in the past.

The Cricket House matches which had been postponed from last term were played off early this term. Our Second XI easily defeated that of Raleigh House, but our First XI had to bow to a no less decisive defeat at the hands of the Haleigh First team. At the end of the 'first round of the

<:ompetition, the order of the Houses was Austin, Percival, Raleigh, and as it had previously.been decided that the :Shield should go to the House that Jed in the first round, Austin House became its possessor.

The winner of the General Shield cannot be named it\ ·these notes as the Cambridge Local reports have only just .arrived, and the results of the School Examination have not ,yet been received. Last term we won 648~ points and losJ; -538. The gains include the points won by those boys who have been awarded Colours for the year, -Cameron, Cheea-Tow ii. Gomes and Shankland, in Football, and Fernandes and Shankland in Cricket-all those points won from the House Matches of last season (Cricket and Football) ,and the points for the Guiana Scholarship. From the above we ·see that our net gain for last ·term is 1101 points. When this is added to our net gain for the termb efore, -509 • ·points, ·our net gain for the . School-year is 398! points .

'This certainlydoes not represent a good year's working, but we believe that with few exceptions, our boys did their best, and that our position is in a large measure due to circumstances. This term we begin a new School-year. During the first few weeks, the outlook was decidedly hopeful, but • .as we got towards the middle of the term, a rot set in. ·Our average weekly lossei; reached eighty, while our gains suddenly decreased. Most of the points Jost are due to ·detention for work. With boys who are under a natural disability we sympathise, but Percival House expects that its lazy shirking members will realise at once the harm they ;are doing to their House by getting into detention sofrequently on account of negligence in doing their work. We / ·have in all probability lost the General Shield this yearfor the first time. Will each boy of Percival House then do ,his very best to regain /a'I' his House this trophu? Remember, ,too, that there can be no gains without pains.

RALEIGH (B) HOUSE.

At the time of the publication of these notes, we haveguinecl 2H!l and lost 462 points, thus making a net loss oL 223. As this net loss compares favotll'ably with th~ losses of other terms. there is some ground for satisfact10n. But more than half of these points could have been saved. but for a few boys who make it their habit to be detained every detention afternoon.

The three cricket matches remaining from last term were all played out this term. Our second eleven met ~hesecond eleven of Percival House and suffered a crushmg defeat. The bowling of Morris of "Percival" proved t90n1uch for our lads. Meeting the first eleven of Austm House. we were also defeated outright. It is tr}le that theopposing House was dismissed for a small total 1~ t~e first innings. But the ill starred run-out of Lewis Just a~ the time when he seemed to. have been settled and the untimely advent of some water-coconuts utterlr dampeil wha'tever cricket spirit we had in us.

It seems shameful to relate that most of our b_ats!]leni sacrificed their play for coconuts. In the second mnmgs we could not even reach the thirties. In our true form we· met the first eleven of Percival House and defeated them in a first innings match played on the G. C. C. ground. In this match Lewis was simply .unplayable.

The football matches will soon come off. Ral.eig_h· House has the weakest team, but whatever matei:1al 1s available will be used to the utmost. If we cannot wm, at . lenst we are prepared to give our opponents a hard fight,

During the Summer Term of this year it was decided to give to the three houses A, Band C, more distinctive names. i.e., Raleigh. Percival and Austin. The bestowal of the names was decided by lots and the name Austin fell to C House.

• As it had been decided to play only one round oi the Cricket House Matches, the final House Match between the First Elevens of Raleigh and Austin Houses was played off this term and resulted in a win for Austin House. · Thus Austin House has done very well in its first vear.

It has ~on two ~ut of th~ four shields, those won being the Athletic and Cricket Shields. As the Football Shield "·as won by Percjval House, there is left to be contested for . only the General Shield. . The School. Ex?mination results will largely decide which house will wm the General Shield. The Cambridge Local results have arrived but the gained points only have been counted and no estimate has yet been made of points that have been lost through failures. With regard to points for the General Shield, Austin House gained during the Spring Term of 1921 42 l points which were won on Sports D~y apd for For.m Work_. 532 points were lost by boys gomg mto detention, commg to school late and being re- ported to the Headmaster for more serious offences.

A total of 469~ points was gained during the Summer Term. Of this amount, 372 were gained for Form Work and the remainder for Football House Matches. 621 were lost through detentions, late arrivals and reports to the Headmaster. About 170 points were gained in the Cambridge Local results.

The number of points g~ined is exceeded by the number · of points· los~. Certain boys win a number of points every Term for their House, but these points are thrown away as soon as they u.re won. Boys should- remember that two ,

points are Jost every time they come to school late or get into detention. A large number of points could be saved if some boys took the trouble to get up earlier in the morning and put a little more restraint on their behaviour.

A good many new boys having arrived this term, the number of boys in the House was increased to 57.

OUR GUIANA SCHOLAR. It was difficult to predict which of the five boys who sat for the Scholarship would be the winner, · The names of the Candidates w<'rr.-C. V. Lewis, A. G. Mc Lean, and E. M. H. Sharples in Science. while N. E. Cameron and A. B. Charles took Mathematics, Charles was the only novice and was not in the run, It was Lewis' third and last allempt, and his experience of examination tactics, lo~cther with hi5 past attainments, favoured him as the likely winner, while Mc Lean and Sharples had done such good work at their previous litlcmpt and had been working so earnestly that their chances were also ro~y. Cameron's first attempt had heen creditable and he had earned th<' praise of the examiners, so great things were expected of him. The uncertainty as to the winner continued up to the day of the arrival of n'.5t1h1, when Cameron was declared the Scholar for 1921.

The report on his work waa the hest we have ever had in Mathem,1tics. It slated that his work wa~ splendid in all departments and that hi, total marks were 87% of the total maximum.

Cameron should be proud of this report, as it is an unusual one in Mathematics.

He came to us in January, 1917, as a Government Junior Scholar, from Christ Church Anglican School. He entered the Upper Fourth and 2 terms after sat for the Junior Locals, obtaining second class honours. The next year, 1918. he again took the Junior and got first class honours with the five creditable distinctions in English, Latin, :French, Mathematics, and Religious Knowledge. The pitch had been recently made up, and all in favour of the bowlers, ... shooters " being of frequent occurrence. Our opponents made IO I ·(Lewis 7 for 48) and we 68 (Mr. Pilgrim 29).

Q.C. v. Mallecnocs C.C. Played at Kingston on September .24th. We began well, Shankland bowling Austin, their Captain, with a beauty, After that our bowling fell off and they declared at I ?2 _for -S:-far more than they were worth. We collapsed for 41, the Principal .·being the only one to reach double figures. Shankland took 3 for 72 .in their innings.

Q.C. v, D.C.C. Played at Queenstown on October 8th. \Ve • :batted first on a slow wicket, and had 78 for 4 when rain stopped play. ·C. V. Lewis played a good innings, of 38 not out, Garraway ( 18) helping him to Qtake 52 for the Ist wicket.

Q,C. v. E.I.C.C. On our ground on October 15th. Batting fast on a wet wicket we made 139, M, E. Reid aad C. V, Lewis playing • vigorous cricket for 47 and 33 respectively. Our opponents, who batted one short, could muster only 70 runs, so we scored our first victory for the season in the Garnett Cup Competition, For us Reid took 4 for 14, Lewis 3 for 27, Webber i 2 for 11. In this match the flag presented by Mrs. Moulder was flown from the pavilion for the first ,time.

Q.C. v, B.G.C.C. Played at the Thomas on October 29th. We "hatted first on a wicket slightly afiected by rain and, after the Principal (16), and Webber i (16) had made 37 for I, could only raise 93, C. ·v. Lewis (16) and Stokes: (13) being the only other batsmen to make double figures. Our opponents got the runs for the loss of 7 wicket~.

Unfortunately for us Shankland, nho took 5 for 27, did not find his Jength until towards the end of their innings. .f/uslin (C) House v. Haleigh (B) House. The match between :the Senior Teams was played on September 17th, on the College Ground .and resulted in an easy win for the former. The totals were: .f/uslin ,66 (Reid 32, Franker 13 not out) and 73 (Barrow i 33, Nightingale 14, ·,Barrowii 16), Raleigh 44 (Leung 10) and 27 (Ferdinand 13). For Raleigh Lewis took 6 for 67, Deni,y 9 for 20, for .f/uslin Barrow i ;took 12 for 41, Garraway 4 for 19. '

that there are very few now at Queen's who know anything ol theSchool six or seven year• ago. It is difficult to eliminate entirely the••ego," hence the reader's forbearance is asked-as far as this goes, In September, 1914, the staff consisted of Mr, T, A. Pope, B.A. (Cmtab), Principal, and Messrs, G, F. Franks, M,A, (Oxon), J. Hunte, A. Leechman, M.A. (Oxon), E. 0. Pilgrim, B.Sc, (Lond), and P. C. T. Mcfarlane, Mr. K. D. Reid of the Government Laboratory visited for the purpose of assisting in the teaching of practical chemistry, Mr. Pope was on leave. with the result that the services of Mr. A. D. Gaskin. al that time the popular senior of the school, had to be requisitioned.

School was then held in our former building at the corner of Carmichael and Murray Streets, a buildinq which will ever be held; ~acred by those of us who have spent our earliest, and perhaps our best ,. · days of school-life in her.

Queen's College in those days boasted of about· sixty-five boys, (,lightly more or slightly less), that is, the number was considerably less· than a half of what it is now. There were seven forms-Forms I, II, Ill, Lower IV, Upper IV, V. VI. Soon after Mr. Pope returned the School was re-arranged into six forms-Forms I to VI. Some Second Farm boys came down to the First Farm, while certain mem·bcrs of t.hc Third and Lower Fourth received the same kind ori. promotion.

This was the first'.' war term," and the war fever was at its highes in the school. Patriotic airs (Parlez-vous, etc.) could be heard coming from the play-ground ,vhenever the boys were out, the Upper Fourth hcing in particular responsible for this, One thinl more is worth mentioning for this--the first term-the Speech-day. This was the only Speech-day held during the war• Unlortunately I can give no details about it, as being a '• new" boy, and not having a clear idea of what a speech-day meant, I did not attend. l his, however, is certain : that the afternoon was wet, and that when c-onsidered from the point of view of the size of the audience, the Speechclny wa, not a thorough success.

January term of 191 S was a very important one in the history o£ the school. It was at the beginning of this term that monitors were first appointed. The first step had thus been taken for the real advancement .of Queen's College. A. D. Gaskin was made the first Head Monitor, · The number ol monitors appears to have been indefinite, every member of the Sixth Form being a monitor, ipso /acfo, so long as there was no reasonable cause for objection to such an appointment. The lower : school did not favour the idea of having monitors al all, but when it had hr:cn £urther announced that full caning powers had been extended to the monitors, and when this privilege had actually been exercised on aliout two occasions in the first month, rebellion seemed unavoidable.

Wiser counsels, liowever; prenilerd. and sraclually we sot to appreciate our monitors, and to submit loyally to their bidding, Our sports- came off this term as usual, Wong proving that he was unmistakeably the best athlete in the school. .

The next -event of importance occurred in t"1e autumn term 0£ 1916. Towards the end of this term the School was divided into two Houses, " A" and " B." The House Masters were Messrs. Pilgrim and Leechman and the Captains V. I, Evan Wong and B. E. Lewis,. respectively. The Colours of thq Houses were red (A) and Cambridffe · blue (8). It is a cause for great pity that the day on which the actual~ existence of Houses was recognised is not recorded, as it is one worthy of . celebration by the Houses. It . can be. said without fear of contradiction that nothing has played so great a, part in raisimJ the tone and morale of the College as the House System. · The year one thousand nine. hundred and sixteen was a Year of misfortune for Queen's· Messrs. Franks and McFarlane became seriously ill early in the year, Mr. Moulder. returned to Queen's to• act lor Mr. Franks, this being the first time that many of the younger boys in the sch.,ol came into close contact with _him, His gentleness. ./ but firmness of manner soon compelled even the laziest lo learn hi,.

Latin, as it was clear that the old order " had gone on leave," and that manipulators could not guess how matters would turn out in class, that., · is, whether they would be called upon to annver the first question or the last. Mr. Moulder had, however, for some reason or other, to leave about the middle of the Autumn term, and was succeeded by Mr. H. V. Taitt, M.A .. of the Education Depa1trnent. Messrs. £.

A. Q. Potter and E. S. Chabrol acted for Mr. McFarlane at difren:nt ./ times. At first Mr. Taitt seemed neither to understand nor to appreciate· the spirit of the boys, but gradually we became accustomed to each other, and worked on peaceably for the common good.

It was this year, too, that Mr. Pilgrim got his wrist broken while playing cricket on the College i)remises • But this was truly an ill-wind for it blew nobody good. The smaller fry "ho had already calculated how many "free hours" they would have each day were disappointed in their expectations. For alas I with the exception of the fir~t half day after the accident Mr, Pilgrim ·was present as usual and performed his duties with his one serviceable hand in a perfectly efficient way, o·uring the August holidays of 1917 Mr. Franks died, and not long after Mr. McFarlane followed him. Thus within a week Queen's had been deprived of two of her old masters. Mr. Franks was a model gentleman. He never thought a boy in school capable of telling a lie to free himself from any difficult position, A boy's "No sir" in answer to a question as to whether he did something that was wrong. was taken to have its true meaning in the Anglo-Saxon tongue. M r. T. H. K. Moulder, M.A. (Oxon) , the brother of our pre,ent Principal, joined the staff at the beginning of the Autumn term, but had to resign on account of ill-health before he had spent even a term with us.

The intense popularity which he haa obtained in that short time is the most efficient testimonial to his cho.racter.

Mr. Pilgrim creditably discharged the duties of Principal for th,~ whole of this term and a part of the follo wing term until the newly· appointed Principal, Mr. £. R. D, Moulder, M.A. (Oxon). arrived from England whither he had gone on leave some months before.

Mr, Moulder still retains those qualities which made him, when he was formerly at Queen's, so successful a teacher, o.nd popular a ma,ter.

H e is therefore certiin of success, signs of wh ich are even now only too appo.rent.

A short time before Mr. Moulder's arri val. the Rev. A. I\ I. Hale, M .A. (Ca ntab), joined the staff as a S enior Master and in the Autumn term of 1920, Mr. L. D, Peterkin. M,A .. (Durham). came to us as a Senior Master also.

In September, 1920, the number of ·monitors was limited to six .

At the begi nning of the Sprin g ter m of 192 1. l\liss Ke nnedy came to act on the staff. It was this term, loo, that the School unanimouslv decided, on the Principal's sugges tion, that it be redi\'ided into th re~ Hou,es instead of two ; as obtained before. Mr. Peterkin. who had in the pn:vious term performed the duti es of Junior master of " B" House, became Senior Master of the newly-formed "C ·· House. Mr . Hale succeeded Mr . Leechman as Senior Master of House " B ".

Lastly, we come to th e chan ge of the names of th!! House~. ··A ··. " B, " and " C " were considered as bei ng rather meaningless when applied to a House, and more suitable names were sought. For the third year in succession new records havebeen made as regards examination results. As the above· list contains no preliminary results, this examination bring held now only in December, comparison with former years can only be in respect of the senior nncl junior results. Such comparison shows a record for rn21 as rej!ards (1) number of places in Class 1 senior Honours.

(2) number of mathematical distinctions at the senior examination. and (3) the total number of places on the honour!J list at the junior examination: The total of the Hnccesse:-1 nl the examination is slightly less than last year. the fiirm·e9 being 28 and 31, respectively, but there hns been II rise in the total number of honours places.

With regard to rlistinct'ions there has been no difference between the two years: in 1920, when the numbet· was unpre_.cedentcd, · there were 21, one being in a snbject outside ·of the school curriculum, while those' earned in 1921 alrn totnl 21, including three in subjects rnot on the curricul 11m In class I honours we secured 7 places as against 5 la-;t. : ~-,.•,,r, and H -in 1919. ------------------···--·--In the senior division ten of our boys were successful, -and deserve congratulation. Our four places in Class I constitute, as we have said, a. record, and the particular boys are worthy of special commendation. Of the group Pollard alone has not previously taken the examination, and this makes his success so much the more creditable.

When Denny secured a distinction in mathematics at the senior section last year it was pointed out that this ·distinction had not fallen to the credit of the school fo, many years. Now three others-Garraway, Jaikaran and Pollard-have not only accompanied him into Class I, but, like him, placed to their credit the distinction in mathematics. Pollard secured also distinction in Applied mathematics, and in Latin and French. Distinction in Applied mathematics has not. be-en secured by any pupil since ·1903, while it is quite seven or eight years since any of our senior candidates has earned distinction in • French. Wong with Class III was the only other boy in the honou1·s list, and being· but a first year candidate, . his success is quite creditable. · The Class I honours list in the junior division iS smaller by one than it has been · for the last two years, ..

Nevertheless, the total number of honours has risen• Barrow ii. is quite conspicuous with five distinctions in Class I, and in the same class are Clarke and Sears, with three distinctions each. .Distinction in Latin was earned by each of these three boys, while Barrow and Clarke both secured distinctjon marks in History and Mathematics.

Sears was the only boy in this division to distinguish himself in French. These three boys have certainly done ,exceeding well, and deserve praise and all encouragement. In Class II. are Sharples ii. with a distinction in English, Burch-Smith and Ying ii, and in Class iii, Grant i (distinction in English), Jaikaran ii, and A'damson-aJl very creditable performances. As Barro,v ii. ·also secured distinction in English, the number of distinctions in this subject earned is three, a very encouraging result. The total number of successes in the .Junior division is eighteen.

Tims, nc,rlecting- "punting about" at mid-day, which, cannot count, the only practice obtained was the matches themselves, a fact that is borne out by our far better play towardr. the latter part of the season, than at the beginning.

By then. :,.·ou see, we had "found ourselves". · 'l'houg-h we have lost, yet our players can be congratu-!ated on the dogged spirit and determination shown by them 111 all our matc~es. We played best when losing, and always scdred when thmgs were looking worst, Thus we hardly everwere licked 'nil' ! we always managed to wrest one from Fortune. The better our opponents, the better our play. ~h~i:,e everyon~ tried and did his best, it is hard to single out md1v1dual merit, but in mentioning Cameron & Melville ~1t fulJ-back, Sharples ii. at left half, with his genius for headmg', Grant 1. and Chee-a-Tow iii. whose combination together on the left wing always secured the admiration of' the onlookers, and Weeks at forward, who has scored most gQals for us. we think we are but giving praise where it is due.

The season opened for us when we met th~ G .. F. C. the winners. As we lost only by 2-1, {!t, 1-ml, m the return we did not do so very badly. Agamst the Evertons we lost both matches, and against the Victoria, the runners up we again suffered defeat in both cases 2-1, 2-nil.

W~ drew both of our matches with the Malteenoes, and if ever we deserved to win any, these two were they. We played our best games against them. Expecting to outclass us entirely, a more surprised team could hardly be. found at the end of the game.

Our next foe was St Barnabas. We won our first match, but through under-rating them in the retl;lrn, we l';)st it. We easily won both of our matche.s agamst Chrt:'t Church Club, but to our great surprise and chagrm we lost our first match against the Infantry Sports Club.

Now many words had passed on the subject of this match. and it is not pleasant to have to 'eat' one's words .. How- • ever in the return, we regained our sel~-respect, smce we totally outclassed them, as the papers said next day.

The last match of the season was against the Artillery.

They had won the first, and we drew the return, thanks to some mis-kicking by our defence.

The competition over, we now have a breathing space, which we have utilized in playing off the Form Matches, and House Football Matches. It is too early to prophesy, but all indications point to either the Fifth or the lower Fourth as the winners. He would be a rash man to tr~ to state t~e winner of the House Matches; for though Rale1g.h House 1s leading at the end of the first round, yet Percival Hou~e has a knack of spurting up at the last moment, nor i1J Austin House to be despised. · In conclusion, I say thi~: We have won .no c_ups, have done nothing brilliant but it Sheer Determmation, ~ure Doggedness of Spirit, and Clean Play count for anythmg, then we claim to have done as much as those before us have done. " The game is more than the player," .and though we lose we still try to teach our boys ever to hve up to those lines of Kipling's when,he says .If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same
