For more reasons than one the present term is an eventful one.

We have actually taken the step so long talked about, and are now safely housed in the old Orphanage. Again we have to encounter a host of examinations, the first is actually on us, while these notes are being written. Most important, this term is the last one for many of our senior boys. Every year this parting with our best boys comes, and with it some sadness. Every year, the thought that no others will be found to replace those leaving haunts us. Especially is this so in the present term, as among those leaving are such stalwarts as Wong, Chabrol, Hutchinson i, Ewing i, and many others long connected with us, and famous for feats performed in the school and on the field. But the old school must go on, and with hope we gaze into the future, ex.. pecting some of the lesser lights to rise and shine with a brilliancy equal, i:f not brighter, to that of those now shedding their iast rays on the history of Queen's. Of course, we hope, often to hear about these senior boys in our Old Boys columns, for with the training and discipline acquired from a long school career, they must make a place in the world.

Our numbers remain practically the S(lme, very few changes taking place, this being the last term of the school year. The changes have been as follows : Departures : T. A. Chundun, B. H. Pates, C. C . Pereira, G . Persaud, W . R . Wharton .

The change from the old school to the new has been quietly made, and everything is in place in the new buildings . There is every promise of a beautiful school, when a few alterations are made.

The grounds, too, with the expenditure of a little money, should make quite a handsome appearance, and will supply a long-felt want in the life of Queen's. There will be no more need for us to borrow for our sports and football and cricket fixtures.

The game for the term is football, but owing to the state of the new ground there have been no practices :;o far, and our boys will ha,¡e to meet other teams, without having any training. This is a gre,1t pity, as we were hoping to do great things this year. But as matters have turned out we shall have to be playing without many of our bes.t boys.

J0hnson and Stoby left school last term, and both of these were good men. Chabrol is still on the sick list and we have lost a very promising player by the death of C amacho. Our wealc point is in a goalkeeper, no likely boy' being found as yet to undertake this responsible post. Our House Football Matches take place this term as well.

We are glad to mention that our Scouts are i11 full swing again thanks to the energy of Sergt.-Major Manly and Mr. Potter, assisted

by Messrs. E . Cox and W. Stoby (both old boys.)

The candidates for the Guiana Scholarship are all Queen's boys, and are as follows: 1'1athematics: Wong i, Agard; Science : Hutchinson i, Hutchinson ii, Kerry i, Marks and Mitchell.

We are indebted to M essrs. Booker Bros. for lending us their motor-plough to help with our grounds. So far, the weather has not allowed the plough to ¡work at its best, but we hope soon to have the whole of the western part of the playground levelled.

Mr. James Rodway, F.L.S., the well-known Curator of the Museum of the R. A. & C. Society, has again put us under a debt of gratitude to him. He has presented the College with a copy of the very rare " Views in the Interior of Gu.iana " published in 1840 with letterpress by Schomburgh, the distinguished traveller. The book is very difficult to obtain, and is highly prized by book-lovers.

It contains twelve excellent engravings of some of the river, forest and mountain scenery of Guiana. We hope to have these framed and hung up about the school-rooms.

This is by no means the first book that Mr. Rodway has given to Queen's College. He has presented us with several of his own works and some volumes of travel in the South American Continent. And he is ever ready to give practical advice to us for the improvement of our School Library. We are very grateful for his kindness to us at Queeni College.

On Empire Day, we had the good fortune to have delivered to us a lecture by Lieut. Reid, the Naval Officer in charge of the Wireless Station. We have to thank Lieut. Reid for his kind advice to the boys and hope that he will consent to visit us on some future occasion.

On the same day we had a visit from Mr. K. S. Harris, the new Town Superintendent, who was also present at the lecture. These gentlemen have the honour of being our first visitors in the new premises.

We call attention to the Principa]'s letter in this issue asking old boys to give any information about our old boys at the Front to complete our ,• Roll of Honour."

STAFF.

We congratulate Mr . Carrington on the birth of a son. Sergt.Major Manly, our Drill Instructor, has gone to Canada on a trip.

We sympathise with the relatives of the late Mr. A . F. D'Andrade, who served on our staff for two years. He came to Queen's in 1867.

Our janitor, R. Pollard, and his wife also have our sympathy on the loss of their little daughter.

MAGAZINE.

We are hoping to have as a frontispiece last term's cricket team, but under present conditions we can never be sure of getting such things to time, and so there may be disappointments. We are publishing a new article which we want to make a regular feature, viz., Hints to Parents. We must apologise for our late appearance, and hope never to let it happen again.

Our deepest sympathy must be expressed for Chabrol, our captain, who has been unable to compete in the recent Scholarship Examination, on account of his long illness. He has been very unfortuna~. considering he has no more chances to sit. I am perfectly sure that all the boys, not only. in his House, but also in the whole school, sympathise wMth him.

He has also been unable to resume his duties as captain. We miss his spirit, and in the coming football matches we shall miss his help.

Last term, boys, you beat the Reds for the Cricket Shield. Who says that you will not wrest from them the Football Shield ? It is true that our team is weaker than theirs, but your deter~ination to win will assuredly pull you through. So far, there have been no interHouse maltches. Everyone is " swotting " for the Cambridge Exams, and the desire for football is not very keen. Moreover, the boys do very little practising, as the field is not yet in suitable condition.

I am glad to say that last term we lost considerable less points than the previous term. That is an improvement, boys, but still our gross loss was actually 5 70 ! There are about six boys who have a weakness for getting into detention class. Everyday,-sometimes twice a day.their names appear on the lists. At the beginning of this term, those boys were talked-to, and there was a noticeable decrease in the number of times they were detained in school. But again, the detention lists are growing, and the " House B " boys-sad to say-have contributed largely 'lo this sudden growth. What is worse, these boys give very mean and petty excuses to account for this. Remember boys, no master deliberately puts you in 'tention because "he has a spite on you"-as you say. You have only yourselves to blame when you are detained.

Bear that fact in mind, and put a stop to the nonsense at once.

Just one word more. We have won two shields this year already.

There are two more for us to win. We want the House to carry off the General Shield especially. This can only be done by beating the rival House in the Cambridge Locals. With hard and steady work you can do it. Good luck !

The term is fast drawing to a close and no matches have been yet played in the competition for the Football Shield. This delay must again be attributed to the Guiana Scholarship Examination and also to the condition of our grounds which necessitated a late start of our Football Season. We were hoping to be able to play our House matches on our own grounds but considering its present state, this hope can hardly materialise.

Of our last years team, we have lost four of our players, viz.:Potter, Kranenbcrg, Camacho and Johnson. During the term, Camacho died of typhoid fever, while the others have left school to fight their way in the world. These players were all in the school team, Potter as goalkeeper, Kranenberg as right half-back and Camacho and Johnson as forwards on the left wing. Their places in the school team were all well-deserved and so it will be easily seen that our House team has suffered considerably. But, we are not down-hearted. Our opponents have also lost good players though not as many as we, perhaps. Unde-r ordinary circumstances, we ought to be able to hold our own when the time comes to try conclusions. Let us not for,get, though, that victory, on the football field is never won by talking. Hard conscient:ous practice wins victory, nothing else.

To counter-balance our losses, we have been given Phillips, Johnson, Maggs and others who are yet young but who will one day be footballers if they continue as they have begun. The two first-mentioned are both in the school team and we are expecting great things from them. With some hard practices, Maggs will also be of great help .to our team. We are not as strong a team as we were last year but we can win the Shield and we mean to win the Shield. Our 2nd XI. team is also fairly strong.

The youngsters we were given added much to its strength, and we mean to avenge our last year's defeats.

Now, for our points. As we played no matches and the examinations have not been held yet, we have gained no points, while the number of points against us are as high as usual, nay, higher than usual. Up to the present, we have lost 566 points. A number far greater than we can afford to lose, but it is now too late to dilate on the evils of registering minus points in our House Record Book, as we are already at the e::.d of the term and the year also.

Both our School as well as th :: Cambridge Local Examinations will soon be upon us. Now is the time when many marks may be gained and many lost. Now is the time for those boys who have not

been able to shine at athletics. Now is the time for them to show their worth. To them lies the duty of gaining all the possible points while to the less fortunate lies the duty of seeing that none of us is ever last in any subject. The results of the examinations will materially improve or lessen our chances of winning ' The Big Shield ' so it is left to us to do our best.

This is my last term but I shall always read the House Notes, and remember, I expect to see Mr. Pilgrim's House winner every year of the Big Shield at least. You can win the other shield's, but you must be keen, for keenness goes a great way to efliciencÂť

We regret very much to record the death of Camacho i, which took place on

Wednesday, May 29th.

He was absent

from

school for two weeks and nobody realised that he was ill enough to die.

Camacho entered Queen's at the beginning of the Spring

Term, 191 7, 'and was a boy liked by boys and masters.

Full

of life, he needed strict supervision, but he was always dean and ready to own up to any school boy prank.

He shone especially

on the playground, and gave every promise of developing into a good cricketer and a fast footballer.

A. House will miss him in

~heir House matches, as well as the school in the Cup

matches.

He was winner of the Half Mile at the last Sports, and was the most likely boy for the Senior Championship next year.

We offer our deepest sympathy to his parents and relatives.

Of all the many suggestions as to the future of the Orphan Asylum buildings, that of removing Queen's College to occupy them was the one that found most favour. It ¡has long been conceded tJ1at no more unsuitable site could have been chosen for a school than the old position of Queen's. The bustle of the traffic, the noise of passers-by, the street cries of the huckster, the lack of a proper playground, all combined to discredit the old spot.

The change has been made. During the Easter holidays, the removal was going on, the dismantling and setting up again of cupboards, On April 15th, with a shelves, blackboards, desks, etc. took place. feeling of something strange in the atmosphere, the school assembled for praye¡rs to open the Summer Term.

The Sixth Form (Maths.) have a beautifully cool room, in the middle of the top-storey of the front buildings, the rest of that flat being used for the Fifth Form. The second storey of the same buildings contains the Fourth Form, and in this room prayers are read and the Detention classes held. Around this room have been placed all the old boards inscribed with the names of the boys who have secured successes in the various examinations. The western end of the bottom storey is the Chemical Laboratory and the Eastern end is the. Physical Laboratory The tables, sinks, water and gas pipes, are all fixed uo, and the chemical taboratory looks quite businesslike. The same applies to the Physical Laboratory, which has obtained a few tables formerly used by the orphans. A great drawback in both of these rooms is the absence nf ~lass windows, which makes the rooms very dark on rainy days, when the heavy wooden shutters have to be closed.

On the second (top) storey of the .back building are situated the Third, Second and First Form Rooms, going from the eastern end to the western. These Class rooms arei cool and bright, except the First Form room, which gets rather warm after 12 o'clock. On the bottom storev of this build'ing are the Library, the Scouts Room, and a room for the Games Club possessions. The Carpentry shop is situated in the former kitchen of the Orphanage.

When the grounds are made up, there will be opportunity for us to have all our matches played on our own Grounds, as well as our Annual Sports. The playground should be about 120 yards long and 80 yards wide, the only unfortunate point is that we shall have to play in an ea~t-ancl-west direction.

The beautiful garden in front makes a lovely entrance to the new buildings, and the grandeur is increased. by the wide double staircase on entering the front door. The long gangway facing the front door, passing under the branching staircase, also tends to make an impression on a V!Sltor. Then there is the beautiful avenue of palm trees which decorate the upper end of Brickdam to add to the beauty of the new site.

In the near future there will be boys who will love and revere this New Queen's College just as much as the present old boys do the Old Queen's College. There is every reason to hope for a model secondary school tn the New Buildings. The bogey of " ,the great distance" is already, we believe, dead, and soon parents will grow to appreciate the change from the noisy and uncomfortable to the quiet and roomy Queen's College.

The first half of the season of the Garnett Memorial Competition is now over. We have b.ten fairly successful in that we have won two matches out of three. Our team was deprived of the services of two of our best men, Chabrol, who has been seriously ill, and Stoby, who has left the school: Wishart ii, who had played for the G.C.C. last year, filled one of the vacancies.

In the first match played against the A.S.C. on their ground, we won the toss and sent in our opponents. They played on a wet wicket and made a total of 64 runs. This small score was due largely to the excellent bowling of Wong who took 5 wickets for 31" runs. We st:;u1r ed our innings. After the fall of the third wicket Wong was joined by Ewing-Chow and the score was taken to 42. The former, attempting to cut a loose ball, was caught behind 1the1 wickets with 16 to his credit\.

The remaining batsmen added only 15 to the score. This was the only match we lost for the half season.

On the following Saturday we met the Police C.C., our habitual victors, a~ the Constabulary Depot. On this occasion we more than avenged our former defeat. They batted first and made but 24 against the deadly bowling of Wong and Ewing-Chow, the former took 4 wickets for 11 runs an ... the latter 5 for 12. We easily passed their score, piled runs on runs, and then, after making 118 runs, withdrew from the field. Seven of our wickets had fallen. Mitchell and Wishart ii. distinguished themselves, the former making 40 and the latter 24. Let us hope that this is but the first of a long and glorious series of victories.

Our next match was played against the G .C.C. at Bourda. Here again we out-classed our opponents. Having won the toss we sent them in to bat on a perfect wicket. They made 108 runs. EwingChow captured 6 wickets for 30 runs. Franker and Ewing-Chow opened our innings and after 5 3 runs were scored, thei former was run out, having made 9 . Mr. Carrington took his place, made 18, and was caught at " Long-on." Ewing-Chow was joined by Mr. Pilgrim and the former, in attempting to pull one of Mr. Belgrave's lobs was bowled off his pads for 5 1. The score was then 98. Wong partnered Mr. Pilgrim and after a few minutes our play was taken beyond that of our opponents ; both batsmen being not out. Mr. Pilgrim played well and ma.de 20. Wong made 5,

Our last match was to be played against the E.I.C.C. but they, for some reason or other, did not meet us and gave us the points.

From this it will be seen that Wt! stand an excellent chance of winning the cup this year, provided that the bigger boys do not leave at the close of this term.

Three prizes were offered--one to the best batsman, one to the most successful bowler, and one to the most useful fielder throughout the whole season. These were won by Wong, Ewing-Chow and Wight i, respectively.

DAY.

(BY C. V. LEWIS, FoRM VI.) On Empire Day, immediately after prayers the Principal introduced to us Lieutenant Reid, who had promised to give a short address on Empire Day. The Principal in his opening speech, said he was very pleased to present to them ( the Boys) Lieut. Reid. The Lie!Utenant, as some of them might know, was in charge of the Wireless Sta,tion. Before th~ war, he had been an ordinary gentleman in an ordinary walk of life: though a Naval Reserve, he had never dreamt he would ever have been called up. Then had come the great thunderbolt on Europe.

The Lieutenant, like many others, had given up his employment, his hopes, ~s home, his family, and had immediately responded to the call of his country, ready, if need be, to make the Grand Sacrifice. He therefore had the· right to speak as one who knew.

Lieut. Reid, in reply said that it was very embarrassing to be introduced in such warm terms as he had beien by ,Mr. Pope. As that gentleman had said, he had been an ordinary{ gentleman in civit liife. The war had come, and had changed the whole social fabric of England.

He, the speaker, knew of a case where one) of his former office-boys was an Adjutant of his regiment : another was Captain : and two others had died for their country. Such had been, and were the conditions in England!

Some of them ( the audience) might recollect the year 1914 and the early part of August of that year. The people of this colony would hardly ever realise the ferment that England had been in, in those days after that quick chain of events-the murder of the Austrian Prince at Sarajevo, by• a Serbian, who, there is every reason to believe had been 'egged on' by Austria,-the ultimatum to Serbia, an ultimatum that no self-respecting nation could have accepted,-the declaration of warthe coming in of Russia, then of Germany, and lastly of England.

There came a time in the history of every nation, when it must decide between remaining great, or ''going under." Such a time had come upon the Roman Empire, and it had fallen through Luxury, Pride and Selfishness. Such a time had come upon the British Empire, but "We shall stand, and we shall win, so long as every man does his duty."

England had ever been, and was peace-loving, as witness our "contemptible little army." Germany had had her forces of war ready prepared ; she had been preparing through fifty years. ·She intended to deluge Europe in blood : she had needed a motive; such a motive had ~ome in the murder of the Austrian Prince. The time had come-the parting of the waves-when they (Englishmen) must fight, or lose selfrespect. They had chosen, as Old En~land would h~v~ had them

choose. America had had to decide the same question, and she had decided as England expected of her. The bigger boys would soon have to decide for themselves, but he hoped the younger ones would never have occasion for such a decision, and so, to them he would say ihe old naval motto "Carry on."

He intended to give them an address not only on Empi,e Day, but also on something intimately connected with them-for example, the pursuit of learning. Most of them had some examination 0r other to, 'sit,' and most of them would try-as he did in his days-to make the examiners believe they knew more than they really did. Some of them re• garded school-life as one long lark, annoying the masters as much as possible, and generally doing things heedlessly-things which in saner moods, they would have left undone. He had read the local newspapers, and according to "Vox Populi," and "Pro bono publico," they were the worst boys in the worst school i11 the West Indies. "However an anonymous writer is an anonymous writer." Yet he would remind them that they had the good of the school in their care, and could act that the name of the school was raised or lowered.

Education, it seemed to him, might be defined as 'the art of making one think.' Education taught one how to ,think. When they attended school, their masters brought the method and the material. They must bring something, and it was according to that something that a boy succeeded in school and in life.

Man was distinguished from the lower animals, by his power of thinking. Man was essentially a thinking animal. Although there were on record two examples of thinking dogs. In the first instance, a man had left his boat unattended. Accompanied by his dog, he had come upon it filled with water. He had forgotten, his baler. So he¡ whistled to the dog, made the motion of one baling a boat, and then sent the dog home to fetch the baler, which the dog brought. This could be explained by the fact that the dog had often seen his master baling. out his boa', with the baler. That the whole thing formed a picture on the dog's mind. The picture had been incomplete without the baler, so the dog had known what to fetch, to complete the picture. If, on returning home the dog had found the baler inaccessible, and had brought instead, a large bath spon,ge, as being just as good as a baler, then one might have justified his thesis that a dog could think. ¡ The other instance was not so well authenticated as the first. Another person on returning home, had found his dog sleeping in his bed:.._ a very reprehensible habit. So he punished the dog. The next day, the dog had again slept in the bed, but having heard its master coming, had jumped dowrl quickly from the bed. But its master had put his hand on the bed, and as he had felt it warm. again had punished the dog. On the 3rd day, the master had entered the room quicker than the dog had bargained for, so th\lt its fll\l\;ter found it blowine on the

He had seen our chemical laboratory, and it had brought back memories of his school days many years ago. He wondered whether the method then employed in teaching sci$ce was similar to that that had been used in his time. He thought that the method of his time had not been what it should have been-in fact, it had been mere crammin.g. Now science was taught in a better manner.

Lieut. Reid then gave a few ¡remarks on 'getting up' history, and continuing referred again to Empire Day. Empire Day, as far as he knew was in commemoration of the birth-day of the late Queen Victoria. That there had been great dispute as to whether it should be 'kept up' or not. America had her 4th of July, and no one denied that it made the young people think of and realise the spirit of their forer fathers and of their country, and helped them to think of aims and objects beyond their immediate sphere of thought.

On the question of the celebration of Empire Day, there had been three parties-the Little-England party, who had thought the more England should have kept to herself, the better it would have been for her. Then there had been the Middle Classes-almost neutral, and lastly the Jingos or Flag-raggers. They had cared not one jot which day had been celebrated: any day would have done for them, as long as there had been the prospect of flying flags. The war had solved the question, and now Empire Day had become a national holiday-a day on which England could look back through the past year, and see how far she was on the road of the True Ideals of an Empire."

The Principal, rising to move a vote of thanks to Lieut. Reid said: _:_They had heard the speech of the Lieutenant, and he (speaker) wanted them to ponder over it. To be horn under the Great Union Jack was the highest privilege, greater even than the proud boast of the Romans. If they wanted reasons for his saying so, let them look at Russia, once in a state of the utmost tyranny, now at the extremity of anarchy and confusion; so much so, that the poor Russians had had hardly a country to call their own. Look at the Turks, at Bulgaria, at the poor Serbians and Rumanians-and then realise the glorious privilege they enjoyed. Let them turn to S . America. There the States had for entire history an earthquake or a revolution.

The United States was the only country that approached them (Englishmen) in freedom of thought, of speech, and of action. Most of them had some reason or other to be grateful to England; that our happiness was bound up entirely in England. The young lads-all they could do was to be manly, straight, and true. Nothing further was required of them. The elder boys would perhaps have to show their ,gratitude in a more practical form. When the time should come, might they not be found wanting, and be ready td die, if need be, for the good of their country. That was all he had to say.

Natural laws compel a parent to think the best of and do the best for his offsprina.

Through ignorance of certain facts, Oir' lack of ,time to ponder over such matters many parents sadly neglect the welfare of their children.

Such hints as will be given in these columns from ,time to time may be 'o f interest to parents and should make our School Magazine more welcome in the home.

A WORD OF INTRODUCTION

Many a career has been ruined by keeping a boy too long at home or at other schools before sending him to Queen's. Nothing detrimental to other schools is inferred in this sta:tement. But to obtain the education given at Queen's it is necessary for boys to enter at suitable ages. Any boy, familiar with the four rules, simple and compound in Arithmetic, and fairly fluent at reading, is fit for our First Form, where a beginning is made in Algebra, Geometry, Latin and French.

The average boy should be quite capable of doing this a.t ten years, and hence at that age, or at the latest eieven, a boy should be sent to Queen's.

Coming to us at this aQ'.e, they will be able to sit thefr Preliminary Exaf"'ination in the Third Form. Many boys thirteen or fourteen year~ old knowing none of the above-mentioned subjects, are sent to us, and consequently they must be olaced in Form I. along with other s?Y1al1P.r bovs.

These boys leave school at 1 5 or 16 in the Third Form, andl in but few cases, have they done anvthing remarkable. Of cour~e. if .1 par:nt is getting his boy tauv.ht o1l i11e ohove subiects, he may defer entermg him till c1 later age, when he may be olaced in a higher form. By some this is considered a difficult auesti?n, but few would urge that the object of education is the coming first in class and the carrying off of various prizes. Briefh~ we may state that a boy should: be sent to school to be made 'a man. To develop character, to experience discipline, to think, to be manly, are therefore the main objects of a school career.

HOME WORK It is of vital importance tha.t home-work should be supervised by the parents. Many parents miss this opportunity of gaining the respect and esteem of their sons by not interesting themselves in the home-work. eve,ry night. A boy should bei made to relate how h~ got through the day, if he gained or lost a place in class. An ideal parent should know the name, disposition, and ability of every boy in his son's form.

We believe this can be done without boring the boy. If exercises are done at home, insist on the corrected exercises being brought home for your perusal. Where possible, a separate room should be giv~ to the young scholar, and definite hours, morning and evening, should be fixed for home-work.

That a certain boy in the Third says his mannerism is " scratching his head "-if so, why so? \ That an enemy of our Micawber said he always had a difficulty in getting a clear understanding of "infinity :" but having seen Mr. Micawber extend his obicular oris cavity, he immedia~ly had a clear deep insight into the vexed question.

That a gentleman who has been in retirement from school life for several weeks and who is spending the days of retiremen,\; in reading Virgirl, Livy, Thucydidei;, Aristophanes, etc., etc., once gave a scientific description of a pepper-a fruit, which was red when it was green, and purple when it was red.

That there is a budding Travelling Agent in our midst. He reads every Lad})' s Magazine he can get. Various theories have been advanced to explain this phenomenon-but all have failed. "Truly," as our Micawber would say, there is no accounting for our specific idiosyncracies."

That frequent detonations have been heard from Kitty district, we did not then know that they were blasting rock there, so we asked our Travelling Agent-he being a Traveller-what they meant. "Blasting for Bauxite" he replied-he being an Agent.

That " heads " of the Fourth said a fortnight was forty days and forty nights.

That the translation of pas du tout is " father of twins."

That Nana and Mary of the Fourth are about to send in their names as nurses for the babies of the First.

That a "PhiListine" is in the ~chool, and that a "Sampson" has arisen to smite him with gum, saying, "I smite thee with gum, thou Philistine ! ' That a silly boy in the Fourth sent to field at Silly point receivec\ the ball on the iaw-bone. That for a week it seemed as if he was taking it about tucked in his mouth exhibiting to the world how smart a field he was.

That Fitz refuses to play football for "sentimental reasons."

That some boys are anxious about the Philistine's head: that one was overheard saying "Since we can't get a hat to fit his head, then w~ must get his head to fit a hat." This experiment, however, has been tried in vain by Sampson.

That in working a sum in which it was stated that "in a twodepartment school, boys and ,girls, the same number being absent etc.. . " a certain Fourth former asked if there was anything significant in the fact that it was the same number absent in both departments.

That in his poor opinion there seemed to be some understanding between the two departments, and most likely some pre-arrangement too.

That a certain boy in the Fourth always says in a most weary tone of voice, ''Oh dear," whenever he is put in the Detention.

That the Dude's latest fad is Classics.

number of the younger boys use the Reading-room during the luncheon hour and we feel confident that when we get our chain, even the Fifth will be giving up their philosophical discussions in the Sixth Form room, and be emulating "the busy little bee" of song.

There have been many rumours this term that we are to have newspapers and magazines put in the Reading-room.. It will be impossible to buy these with money out of the annual grant from the Government, as this money has to be put to so many more important uses.I A,id the subscriptions from the boys will not go very' far. But if ithe Old Boys wiill come to our assistance we shall be able to stock our ReadingRoom very satisfactorily. Each Old Boy might give us annually th,, subscription ,to one paper or magazine, or at any rate, pass on his own copy when he has read it through. We would beg such Old, Boys as .are able and willing to help us to communicate with the Editor.

Mr. Burrowes has done important work in the reorganisation of captured German territory in Africa while the Committee in Nigeria of the Red Cross Society, to which Mr. Burrowes has acted as Secretary, has been instrumental in collecting some ÂŁ48,000 for the funds of the Society. We desire to offer our congratulations to Mr. Burrowes and his family, on the honour done to him.

VISI'rOR: To what do you attribute the enormous increase in Ne1V Business during the year 1917 compared with previous years?

NATIVE: Several causes.

First and Foremost. 'rhe wave of prosperity passing over the colony, a.s a result of which the farmer-" the man who feeds us all "-has been doing better than ever, for the simple reason that primarily this is an agricultural country.

Secondly. '!.'hat confidence born of success after¡ success of a Society that has amply justified its existence; has its stability vouched for by the Actuarial Reports of the highest authorities ; and demonstrated its utility time and time again to those in need.

Thirdly. Intelligent canvassing in placing before possible candidates the undeniable advantages of life assurance over every other scheme for securing to self and dependents that which one anticipates realising if- life lasts.

Like those heroes of the past, great m ,n have been working all this while to !ind out why, with such a hne climate so many people die; why, with so much riches in your country they remain hidden in a wilderness; why, many many people have not come here to settle; why they have not built Railways to go !o Kaieteur, to Roraima, and to bring out the timber hidden far beyond the Falls; why so many babies die; why so many p eop,e get fever, and then die too soon; and now they have found the cause of it all. ¡1 hese Men have found out without a doubt that the two great evils that have kept back the colony are two fevers : one is known as MALARIA, the other as FILARIA. Now it was not enough lo find out the fevers that killed out the babies, and the people before their time; it had to be found QUI what gave the fevers, and this has been done. Two kinds of house mosquitos were found to blame; too kinds that can easily be killed out, if proper means are taken. No one will ever try to kill out all the mosquitos in all the Colony, the task will be too big. But the two that love the house ean be killed out, and kept away.

Grown up mosquitos must be killed, and little ones must be killed. Boys and Girls can play a great part in hunting out near to the house the places where these deadly â&#x20AC;˘, things lay their eggs, hate h and hide in the day time. Every one can learn a little and help a lot. All mosquitos are not poisonous, but those that live in houses and near by are very bad; worse than snakes or dogs. Many many more people sicken and die every year from bad mosquito bites than frorn either snake bite or dog bite, yet people are only afraid of the snakes and the dogs!
