NOTES .

WHEN this magazine appears, another school year will havr. al:,1ost rim its course. This term, the last in the year, is the !IIOst important from many view-points. So many examinations are bound up in it, that everybody seems to be connected with one or o~her c,f these examinations. The house-shield hangs upon the marks gained or lost this term, causing anxiety in the breasts of some, especially the c.apta;ns of the house~. Again, to many it is the last term they w;Jl spend at Queen's, ¡ and the thought of leaving the scene of all their juvePile joys, pains, games and sacred friendships with loved schoolmate,, haunts ithem night and day. To these a new love for their old school appears, quietly a tfirsrc, but ever growing more tender till the close of the term. The step from ithe schoolroom to the office is a great and momentous one, never easi!y forgotten, as in most cases it ca!'! ()nly be taken once. But what a step it is! What an awakening to the reality of life, with its cut-and'~dried routine! What a fond back- ¡ ward look is then taken of the good old school-days, the good old school, the times we had, the curious masters who took such pains with us, the fights, the floggings, the many other things. Such a feeling comes over the Editor as he begins to write these notes. Fortunately, there is one brisiht outlook-the school magazine, which will ever come to stir us up -to merry scenes of old, and retell the same old tales that were w dear 1to us when in the same old class-rooms.

Potter are both on the sick list. It is not for us to make predliction, but to wish :.i.11 the boys a comfortable ,time in the examinaJtion room .

The -School Examination and the Cambridge Loca:ls are looming ahead. What luck they hold for us will be written about next term.

It is a pity that our staff has been so disorganised of late, especially during this term .

The " House " system is still causing healthy rivalry and is slowly, but surely accomplishing the desired end. This term the houses are to conte9t the Football Shield.

The game for the term has been Football, our team having entered for the Junior League Competition. The fixtures were late in appearing, and no matches have been played as yet. We have lo5t three of our best men, but the boys still feel confident of winning many matches.

The Carpentery Shop has its supporters yet, and many useful articles have been 'turned out. Writing desks, folding chairs, and book-racks seem to take the fancy of the young carpenters.

A new departure in the shop is that of boat-building; two boats have already been built and pairJted, while a third, a veritable Dreadnought i11 its dass, is under construction. Mr . Nassey is always w~lling to give the boys the benefit of his knowledge in all they are constructing, but we think he must take a special delight in instructing the youthful bo:itâ&#x20AC;˘ builders.

The Boy Scouts are being seriously taken in hand by Sergt.Major Manly. Since the outbreak of the war, the troop has heen sadly disorganised, but with patience and hard work we trust soon to Sl'e it leading again as it has alwiays done in the past .

In spite of its rustiness, our boys succeeded in gaining the most points at the 1ecent Scout Sports held on June 4th .

We take this opÂľortunity to wish all the boys a pleasant holiday .

The Sta.ff.

Mr. Franks, who has not been enjoying the best of health recently, was granted lea.ve of absence for the whole of this term. We are sorry also to record -the absence of Mr . MacF arlane on the ~ame grounds . The latter has been in the Public Hospital for some months, and is stiH undergoing treatment there. The places of these two masters have been filled by Mr. Tait, B . A. , of the Educational Department, and ML E. A. Q. Potter, of the Audit Office, an old i~oy. This unfortunate shifting of masters is not the best for boys and examina1tions, but what needs be, must.

The Ma.ga.zine.

It seemed at first that we should be getting very few articles for this number. An appeal to the boys has brought to light some in?l'resting matter. Agard's "Russian Revolut'ion" and Dempster's " Knots " are both good, and it is decid'edly encouraging to have two first form boys contributing to our magazine. We should like all the forms to be represented .

The Second and First Forms have, unknown to themselves, provided matter for the two humorous article3 General Knowled'ge and The Value of First Aid. Model Answers. ,.,as suggested by the first of the answer3 printed, which was actually written almost in the present form in answer to the identical question.

Our other regular features appear.

It would appear that last term the boys lost control over themselves to such an extent that our number of minus marks was almo5t double that of the term before. There are a certain few juniors who are re;ronsiGle f')r this loss.

It is remarkable that dies~ :Joys never lalce part in our matches, and, furthermore, make no effort to do so.

They are satisfied with looking on and ridiculing whomsoever they can. The monitors had them up before them at different times to give them advice as to their conduct.

It is very gratifying to state that some are ~howing distinctly an up-grade tendency in their movements. Few points were gained as there was not much opportunity for so doing . No more matches were played for the term.

This is the last term in the school year and we are trying to make up for our losses.

At the end the winners of the different shields will The other house has already taken possession of two and be d~clared. it is now left to us to secure the other two. The examinations will be held this term also and these ought to bring home a good number of points.

The boys appear to be going hard for it and should succeed in making a hit here.

In these examinations we have grent promise in carrying off the General Shield.

Football . is the game that will be played this term . We are glad to say that our Senior T earn is decidely promising and expects to do some good' work. Two practice matches have been played already and in both the boys held their ground quite well.

It is the hope 1hat they will repeat the performance with good effect when the rP.al ~kinr.ish begins.

0 f the following does the first eleven consist: Lewis i; Pereira i, Subryan i, Stoby i, Chabrol, Pereira ii, Wight ii, Wishart i, Wight i, Wishart ii, Dempster. The eleven for the Many boys who can give some Junior T earn are not yet decided on. valuable aid fail to get themselves properly equipped for play, and are not particularly anxious, it appears, to ask their parents about it.

The5e boys must understand that we want all rthe help possible and they should regard it as their duty to lend a hand when they are ab!e to do so. It is to the credit of the whole house when we secure a vict<.1ry and therefore all should be pleased to do a share of the work.

The Juniors did very well in the cricket season ; we can only hope they wi'l continue to hold their ground in the football.

MR.

PILGRIM'S HOUSE.

Although more than half the term has passed, we have only been able to play one ma,tch in the competition for the Football Shield .

Thi~ was due mainly to the Guiana Scholarship Examinations, and now that this is behind us, we hope soon to decide which of the Houses shall liave the honour of holding the shield, this going to the house that wins two of three matches. Besides this, teams representing the 2nd XI.'s of the respective Houses will have to play off as many matches as are necessary to decide which is the better . So far, these two teams have not met each other .

The only match in the shield competition was played on Friday, 22nd June . This, we won by 2 goals to nil, both goals being scored in t!:e first half of the game, when we played with the wind . Wong scored the first after a rush down by the forwards and the second was the ¡1esult of a beautiful corner kick by F. Johnson. The teams were fairly equally matched thus providing play of a fast and very strenuous nature; so much so that the majority of the players longed for the end.

By winning this match, the House has gained 15 points, but this is all that it has been able to win; while it has been losing steadily.

Last term we lost 31 3 points and gained 199 . Comparing these figures with the 464 points lost and I 00 gained of the previous term, we saw a distinct improvement in the behaviour of the house and commented to that effect in the last number of the magazine. It now seems though that we are going back to the old state of affairs for already we are 384 points to the bad. Most of these were lost during the first three weeks of term . With two new masters, the second and third forms thought they would have some of what they called "fun," and as a result there were very iarge detention classes. In one week we suffered a loss of as many as 120 points . Since then the behaviour of our boys has been better, but this is not enough. It is not fair to the house, it is not fair to the better elements of the house, it is not fair to the better nature of the malefactors themselves, to destroy the advantage gained to us by the hall'd-earned' points we have, by this and similar instances of selfish and senseless misbehaviour. We must remember that every point won or lost improves or lessens our chances of winning the shield that is given for General Work, and unless we lose as few

points as possible, we cannot hope to win this shieldl which is the best of all.

This is our " Examination term " and it is the time too for those boys who have not been able to shine at athletics. They now have an opportunity of showing their merit. It is- their duty to win all the possible points for their house by making first and second places in each subject in the school examinations and doing their best in the Cambridge Loca:ls; while to the others lies the duty of seeing that the name of a " Pilgrim " is never last in any subject for then this weary " Pilgrim " will have lost marks to his house.

Let us always be first then and never last, so that ours shall be the first name to be inscribed on '' The Big Shield . "

I think B House has to be contented on being beaten by the opposing hou~e. But I think it was through lack of practi~.ing, our boys would not turn up when they were told/ to, and I hope ·the next Sports we will wm.

As we all know, Wong is the fastest sprinter at College and has won the senior championship 3 or more times for A House, and Chabrol our fastest runner in B House, brings seconds for us, but I do not think A House can beat us with the exception of Wong. Lewis, who is at present B House's captain, is trying his best to help the huose, but I think the boys of B House do not think of their losing marks as much 3S the boys of A House.

It is true that A House has very bad boy~. but they are not as bad as B House's. It is not that the B Hou~c boys get in Detentipn every day, but many boys every day. While the the A House boys, there are one or two who get in every day and they gain a few marks ·on us every d~y. If we think of this term's football 1:nyone would say that we should win, because we have much the ~tronger team. · The cricket shield is not ours, but we are nearly sure of the football shield. Lewis, who keeps goal for B House, tries to keep his best, but the backs play stupidly. And we all in B House hope ~hat it will be -a- good contest between the two houses, and that Lewis may ~till be captain to see B House win, and then the captain can be changed, if it is necessary,

KNOWLEDGE. FoRM II.

The Lungs.-The lungs are at least two org.a,ns in human bodie;.

They are two tubes in which air passes through in our bpdies. These are about the neck, they are much bigger than the heart and are opposite to it. They are a very delicate part of the body, and if the lung is cut living beings would die.

The Shape of the Earth is very much like an orange or spherical ball, flat at both ends. It revolts on an axis every twenty-four !\ours. !t is round because men have travelled in ships from one point and when they c6me back, they come to the same point, The flatness is in the side3. ' .., .

The Coimbined Court is the highest and largest Court of Justice in B . Guiana, where murder cases and other serious cases are tried. It is a special Court which votes for those who are trying to get in. There big men and honourable men sit, and when you are in the Combined Court you are called Hon. before your name.

Lightning and Thunder.-Lightning is a streak in the clouds, it flashes round and round, and coming in contact with any person it kills them. When by itself it is caUed Fork Lightning.

If you put any cloth to stop _it, it will still show, or when you shut the glass windows.

Thunder is a loud noise over your head, caused by the meeting of warm air and cold air or wind. You can hear it on a rainy day .

The Mayor is a man who looks after the cleansing of the town he is in. and keeps the streets a,nd drains clean. He is the head man of tne T own Council and is responsible for !the condition of the town.

He looks after a part of the Government.

The Sea Wall is a very good cement work to keep the sea from entering and drowning the city. It is airy and very healthy, people go there to enjoy the sea-breezes.

Electricity: Endison is counted as one of the best improvers on Electricity which is a very good invention. It is a very powerful power that can carry along or brighten up any heavy machinery. If it meets in contact with anything it will give you a shock. It is ¡like lightning and is the action of an engine which has different wires to which it sends it to other places outside the building.

Guiana Scholarship is an exam. boys have to pass before they can study to pass any other profession. It enables one with brains to go to England. The boys who win it can easily clear the colony, they get $600 and a free trip to England.

T})phoid Fever is one of the very bad kinds of fever that kiJls many people who get it and have not got a strong constitution. It is caused by drinking dirty water, or the bite of a certain mosquito and is a catching disease. Most of the population die from it, and the best remedy is to be inoculated.

The Air is the mixing of breath and carbonic acid. It is an element of Nature which occupies the space between the earth and the sun. Tt is invisilile, you could only feel it by moving your hands . The air is wind set in motion.

.

A Submarine is a kind cf a boat that water cannot go in when it sails under the water. They are underground boats, and' if you hit the periscope or cunning-tower it will sink.

Conscription is a kind of meJthod which is forced upon people when they do not want to serve in time of their country's need.

Empire Day is a sort of school holiday on which every primary school child goes to sing before the Governor. The Boy Scout,, too, go to Government House to sal1,1te the FJ.ag It is also a great day bemuse. people go about col!eding for the funds of the wounded soldiers. It celebrates the birth of Queen Victoria. It is the day on which everybody was made free. It is the keeping up of any great ancient sovereign~.

Empire Day is the queen's birthda;y, and in the mourning of the queen'3 birthday, there is given a public holiday all over the British Dominions.

CRICKET.

The Garnett Memorial Competition is now over and we can safely say that we improv<,-:1 greatly on our performances as the season progressed. A cursory glar.ce at the results of our matches in the two halvts of the competition will enable one to see the improvement. We played seven matches during each half. Of the first seven we won

one, lost four, and two were drawn games; while in the latter half we won three, were beaten in two and two resulted in " draws."

Our first fixture in the last haH was on the 3rd March, 191 7, when we played the E ast Indians C. C. This club batted first and declared their innings closed after they had made 1 70 runs for the loss of 9 wickets . We then started our innings . Our 4th wicket fell with the score at 67. Ewing-Chow partnered Wong and between them they passed our opponents' score. Ewing-Chow had just made his half century, when, in trying to hit out, he was caught. The score was then 1 79 runs. Undoubtedly, it was this brilliant partnership which added I 12 runs to the score, that won the match.

We next drew with the D . C. C. The captain of the D. C. C . won the toss but sent us in to bat, evidently hoping to bowl us down and then proceed to crush us . In this respect he got the surprise of his life. After making 183 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, we declared our innings closed. Of this, Wong made 50, Ewing-Chow 28, and Fitzpatrick 26 not out. The last named gained well-deserved applause from the spectators by ·' lifting " the D. C . C . 's captain out of the ground.

The Police C. C . then gave us a terrible defeat. Curiously enol:gh, we have never been able to show up against this team; not because o.f their super-excellence, although they have won the Competition this year, but probably because their size overawes us.

On ,his Gccasion they batted first and made 2 18 runs . After the laborio1J.S leather-hunting •that this entailed, we simply collapsed as our p,1or $Core of 63 shows .

Ewing-Chow was the only one of us to get into double figures .

On the following Saturday we regained our reputation by simply outclassing the C.U.C.C. Winning the toss, we sent •them in to bat.

They were then quickly dismissed for 79 runs. Ewing-Chow and Wong doing the needful. The latter took 7 wickets at a cost of 30 runs . Although we had only 80 runs to make in order to win the m~tch, the C. U. C. C. no doubt relying on their bowling strength, still thought they had a chance of winning and our opening ce11tainly seemed to confirm this . The first wicket fell without a run being scored . At

the fall of the third wicket the score was 8 runs . Then a partnership that saved us was formed by Lewis and Wong . Between them the ~core was taken to 76 when Wong was caught. Two overs after that Lhe winning stroke was played, Lewis' score being 17 not out. We thus won by 6 wickets .

Our next fixture resuhed m a " draw . " Our opponents, the G . C C. , won the toss and batted . They made 166 runs . At the call of time, we had made 85 . Wong made 24 not out and Chabrol

Two weeks after our match agains~ the G . C . C. , the A . S . C . met us with a team of 7 men. These we bowled ~own for 31 runs .

Going to the wickets we passed their score after losing one of our wickets, Fitzpatrick's s¡core being 20 not out.

In our last match we suffered a defeat at the hands of the B.G.C.C. Batting first we made 131 runs. The B.G.C.C. then went to the wickets and mad~ 137 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. This defeat of 6 wickets was due to our lack of bowlers.

There can be no doubt that as a bowling team we were the weakest in the competition, while as a batting team we were better than many . Two reasons can be given for this .

In the first place, boys will look for the pleasantest things; hence at practice one can always find a boy who is willing to bat but hardly ever to bowl . Then, the batsman is very often urged on by hope of a reward-a century bat, while the unfortunate bowler is never thought of.

The only way to build up a strong. eleven, both at Cricket and Football, is to start teaching the boys as soon as they enter school when they are young and their limbs pliable and supple .

It is the duty of the bigger boys to 5e.! that the youngsters are encouraged to play. ÂŁ3ch new boy in turn ought to be sought out and his best qualities developed.

Now that the school is divided into Houses there should be marked progress in th_is direction, for doubtless the respective captains will see to it that his boys are at least properly trained. Let every boy begin when he is yet young. Let him always remember that a Cricketer or Footballer is not made in a month. Spasmodic efforts are of no avail.

Steady and conscientious practice does it, nothing else.

On the surface, the question is somewhat ambiguous.

The question says, " relate," but we know this word is properly used in spoken and not written answering. If the question had been " show the relation between the even,:s, etc.," one might see at a glance how to proceed. Again, the time from " the landing of the British to the fall of Sevastapol " is a long period of time, some months, if I may write from memory, and so many events must have transpired in such a long interval! our own commonplace lives, how many events do not happen in one brief day! ! ! So I maintain that it would be impossible to begin to '' relate the events " of such an enormous army-and that the British army.

I shall not ven,~ure to criticise the expression the " fall of Sevastapol," but will rest my answer on this one point " where did it fall to? an·l where is it now?" On the surface the question is too ambiguously worded for the ordinary individual! to answer, as all his efforts may be expended in the wrong direction.

JHE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION. BY ].

Never before in the annals of history did a revolution take place with such sud'den swiftness as did the Russian Revolution of 191 7 .

The outside world was taken unawares, so to speak, by its dramatic suddenness. Events of utmost importance took place in quick succession, ,and in a very short time autocratic Ru;sia had become a Republic. This Revolution ma:r have such far-reaching effects, that it is well to know something of the causes that led ito it.

From very early times Russia has been the prey of German secret agents. Indeed, they have played a great part in the administration of the country .

Every class in Russia came first to be jealous of, and then to hate, thr.f.r. aliens . The Russians have always longed to get even with these " dark force5," ,as they are called. From time to time she has made attempts Biren, the Germa11 to get rid of the millstone around! her neck. favourite of the Empress Anne, narrowly escaped death at the hands of an infuriated mob . An emperor, who · was German in habits and religion, was murdered on that ,account. The Emperor Alexander III. made an effort •to free his country by expelling all Germans from it.

But very soon after they regained their old influence on the Russian Court. The German has a knack of worming himself into othn people's affairs, and when he is once in, it seems rather hard to get him out. At the accession of Nicholas II., whose wife was of Teutonic blood, German influence was paramount.

The Russian Court and bureaucracy were corrupted. High officials were bought over. Russia, let it be remembered, has always been waiting for an opportunity to get rid of the " camarilla " that is, of the dark forces, But she lacked leaders able enough to carry out such a revolution as has taken place. A clean sweep had to be made of these Germans,

r.o half measures. Among Germany's secret agents, Gregory Rasputin deserves special mention. He was a Siberian monk of peasant origin.

He doubtlessly was a man of great ability, but he was an unscrupulous adventurer. He was well known to the Russian Court, and even had access to the Czarina. She looked upon him as the saviour of her son; for Rasputin claimed to have miraculously cured him of some disease or other by magnetism. It was thorough villains like Rasputin who surrounded -the Czar, and were stralllgling Russia by sinister means. Of course, the Russian people was incensed at what was going on in the Government. But the pro-German clique realised that it had sufficient power to thwa,rt the will of the people.

Such was the state of affairs when the present war broke out. During its Russian course there have been numerous instances of treachery . soldiers were betrayed ; a commander in the Army was discovered to be a pro-German. Ammunition was kept back from the men at the Front. Food for the Army and civic population was delayed.

A great munition factory-the Putiloff Works-was blown up, and the result w,as the disastrous retreat of the Russian troops from the Carpathians .

The Prime Minister of Russia, M . Sturma, was accused of being in German pay. Matters were going too far, and the will of the people began to assert itself. In December, 1916, Rasputin wa,s murdered. This was the first step towards the Revolution in which the Government was overthrown by the people headed by the Duma, or Russian House of Commons.

The Governmenil, it should be stated, was carried on by the " Council of the Empire " or House of Lor&. The Duma was primarily intended, it is said, to be merely a consultative body. It was formed in 1905 but never sat until 1906.

During the years between 1905-1917, its power has rapidly increased, until it became a factor to reckon with in the Government of the country . Its members were all true patriots and " boaed " with indignation at the treachery of the Council.

In these members, notably, Prince Lvoff and M. Rodzianko, Russia has found the leaders uf this revolution. The open breach between Government and people was without d'esign.

There were food riots in Petrograd.

The police was called in to suppress them, but fa!iled to do so. The Cossacks were then summoned. These resented the methods used by the police in their endeavour to quell the riots, and sided with the people .

The Duma, which luckily was then sitting, took the situation in hand.

Seeing that it had the Army on its side, it determined to make a clean sweep of the "dark forces." Thus the Revolution began. No one can say that Czar Nicholas was a Pro-German, but his court was under the influence of the Germans. Nicholas was wise enough to see that only complete agreement with the people could save the nation

from the horrors of a bloody revolution. He ¡was called upon to abdkate and did so. He went into retirement with his wife and children, but has since been imprisoned in the fortress of St. Peter's and St. Paul's. The Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovitch accepted the throne conditionaHy, but he too, almost immediately afterwards, abdicated. The Government is now in the hands of a Council of twelve.

In the first stages the Revolution was almost bloodlless. Affairs, however, seem now to have taken an anarchistic turn. Several prpminent men have been murdered; there ha,ve been plots and counter-plots; rioting and drunkenness are spreading throughout the country. Russia is sailing in troublous seas now, but it is to be hoped tbt the men at the helm are capable enough to steer her safely through.

THE VALUE OF FIRST AID. (By FoRM I.)

The value of First Aid is a great use to me because I can make my profession from it. In my learning First Aid I can win the Victoria Cross in this and any War, and1 I would feel very proud being a British soldier. I would try my best with what little I have learnt in First Aid. But first of all, and best of all I am able to get my profession, because you can learn First Aijd very quickly because it is very easy.

And with a little use of First Aid and a little Doctor's work you ca:1 become a very good physician as well as a chemist. If I knew First Aid I would go and help a boy with a cut head and when I have finished tying up the boy's head I would carry him home to his uncle or father and mother, then I would tell them I hoped 1the boy would be soon better. The values of First Aid are that you can mend a person's head when it is broken, or a foot when anyone has a very bad cut, and a doctor is about twenty miles away, you can make it well anrl walk home with the boy. When a boy has a broken leg, two bov scout, can put the boy's leg in splints and take 1two holes and a shirt and make a stretcher and carry him to his house where he will be attended to properly. In the case of wounds if in a battle, and! the man is very badly wounded, a stretcher is taken in which the wounded man is very carefully placed, so that the wound or wounds are not hurt. Then the stretcher is taken carefully to the field hospital where the wounds are dressed.

In case I saw a man falling from a precipice and when he came to the ground, some of his limbs were broken, at once I would take some plaster· paris with some strips of wood and some bandaging and set the limbs theft were broken. If I saw a case of fainting I would at once call for some sme'lling salts and let him have a smell of it, and :iho let him get as much air as he could.

In case of fever, give hirr• some quinine and if'the fever got very high I would put him in a warm bath. In case of a very bad cut I would give it a few stiches and then bandige it and despatch him. The value of First Aid is a very good thing to know.

In the ordinary sense a knot is a complicated entanglement : a figure in which lines constantly cross each other.

It is very d\llicult indeed to explain ·the origin of a knot as well as give a definition of a knot. There is in 'the Bible a reference to a " Knot " but that is a Nuptial Knot, relating to the marriage of Ad'am :md Eve by God, andl quite different from the knot which we are trying to explain.

If the tying of a knot were an invention, everyone of us would have read or heard something about its origin and there would. have · beer. heated arguments over its chief poin(s and peculia.rities.

But as it was not an invention, we ha,ve most likely learned the name " Knot " along with other words when we were children; and as we grew older we found out to what use a knot could be put, and' put it to tha:t use, without trying to dive into the mysteries of a ' ' Knot. " Perhaps centuries ago somebody was sitting idly one day playing with a bit of grass or straw and by chance tied a knot. Probably he had a fair amount of common sense and intelligence and so he perceived that he could make some use with a knot and he went through the process again and again until he became perfect in knot-tying. He then most- likely taught his friends and relations the method of tying a knot. Possibly this was the way in which knots took thei r places among men's tools. And as they were being handed down from father

to son, new uses were found for them and also different sorts of knots were found out.

Knots are fairly ancient, and we have one historial reference, if not more, about them, under the title of the " Gordian Knot." Gordius was a Phrygian peasant chosen by the Phrygians as their king. In gratitude he dedicated his w.iggon to Jupiter and tied the pole to the yoke with a rope of bark so artfully that the ends of the cord could not be discovered. An oracle declared that he who untied this knot would become King of Asia. Many tried' but without success. One day, however, a soldier named Alexander, who had been away for a long while fighting in foreign countries returned home. Hearing <>f this oracle he resolved' to have a try at the " Knot." When he was shewn the lcnot he un$heathed his sword and cut it saying " It is thus ¡we loose our knots." Through this bit of common sense he became rnle ruler of Asia and was known by the name of " Alexander the Gre:1t.

To-day, knots take a most prominent part in Navigation, in fact they form an essential branch in the science of Navigation. No mnn can hope to be a sailor unless he is efficient in everyone of the sailors¡ knot~. which are by no means a few.

The characteristics of a good knot are that it should be easy to tie, firm in the hold, and easy to undo. The " Granny knot " is the wor~t possible knot you can ever 1tie. It is easy <to tie, hard to undo and absolutely unreliable in its hold . Clerks in stores and shops without exception tie up your parcels with granny knots, leaving you to endure the results of their car~lessness in by no means a peaceful fram<' of mind, for when a horriblle pool of muddy water is close by. the " beastly " knot slips and precipitates your goods into the middle of the pool .

The unravelling of intrica te knots is very useful indeed. It gives you a lesson in Patience which is very essential in our lives. Most of us are not gifted wih Patience and when we have a knot to undo we genera1ly adopt the " Al!exandrian way. " This is ndt right; ;:is we lose a lesson in Patience as well as waste string. Although string may be cheap to-day there is no need ito waste it. Long ago strin 5 was very expensive, so peopl~ valued it, and always unloosed all the knots which bound their parcels, thus saving expense, as well as gaining a lesson in Patience and Perseverance. This canal, known as the Kiel canal and the North Sea and Baltic canal was begun in 1887 and finished in 1895. It extends from Kiel dockyard, the greateS'l on the Baltic to the Elbe near Brunsbiittle and like the Suez Canal, at the sea level throughout. Its length is 61 % miles and its depth is about 29 ~~ feet. As the canal is of great importance to Germany, enabling from the smallest of her battleships to the largest to go from the Baltic into the North Sea rapidly and without dlanger, the larger type of dreadnought demanded that thf.! canal should be deepened . This was done in June 191 4, and war wa,; declared on Russia and F ranee a few weeks later . There was a treat~· with F ranee and Britain that if any larger power attacked a smallet one that they should fight, and Germany attacked Belgium, so Britain was compelled to come into the war.

The German battleships were not as good as the British and al.I the world knows, that th~ British Navy is the biggest Navy in the world.

The British fought some of the greatest sea battles that were ever fought, the battle of Falkland, Helifoland, and Jutland. This, of course, ma,d e the Germans frightened and made them run into Kiel and put mines at each end. It is very seldom that the Germans come out of Kiel now, and sometimes they make raids on Kent and the South Eas't coast towns. They always got away in a fog, but once when they were making one of these raids 5ome British patrol boats caught 'them, two of their destroyers were sent to hottom and one got off very badly damaged . If only the German fleet would come out of Kiel and take a good bite from the British Bull Dog!

His career at the University of London and in the Middie Temple has been marked by a series of successes and distinctions . We â&#x20AC;˘ have referred to these from term to term in our magazine, and it may Le stated that no other old boy, so far, has had the number of paraeraphs in our magazine as Duke . Duke, who has also obtained his LL. B. d1egree, intends practising locally and we heartily hope that his run of successes will continue uninterrupr,ed. To the present boys, Duke appears. as a great man about whom they mast speak with lowered voice, and hats off.

It is indeed amusing to hear one of the small boys saying, " Man, I saw Duke," in the same tones of ,we and iespect as evinced by the ordinary individual in London who has chanced to see the King passing.

Our hearty welcome and wishes for a bright future must also be extended to S. L. Van B. Stafford [ 1906], who returned along with Duke. Stafford is also a Barrister-at-Law, having recently been called in London .

C. H. Klautky [ 1912,] recently went to England and ha~ enlisted as a gunner.

He wrote us recently and sent us a photograph of himself . He looks sâ&#x20AC;˘irapping and altogether fit.

A. D. Gaskin [ 1908] Guiana Scholar for 1914; has recently been wounded in F ranee . On his way to England, his ship was torpedoed but with no further mishap to himself. He writes quite cheerily.

N. Lord [ 1904] le~t the Colony on June 22nd for England to offer his services as a gunner. An experienced Artilleryman, he should have little difficulty in soon becoming a non-commissioned officer of the highest rank.

The following have joined the ranks of Benedicts, W. MamonHing ( 1910) , C. H. Hirschfeldt ( 1909) , and H . Massett( 1908) .

M. G. Gaski1. [ 1912] writes us from Canada, saying that he has passed brilliantly another examination, in which he was complimented by the examiner on his excellent grounding in Mathematics.

Fred Abraham [ 1899] has accepted a commission in the British Army.

J. Aird [ 1908 J , one of our keenest scouts of old, recently of Dominica Government Service, has just returned from the Front where he has done his 'bi~' " for King and Country. Aird, though somewhat thin, looks well and is full of useful infor:nation about trench warfare.

CHANCE IS ONLY THE MEASURE OF OUR IGNORANCE.

BY B. E. LEWis-(Form VI.) The despairing trainer urges his man to trust to luck and to have another try. " Chance may be in your favour," he is heard to say .

Once more the athlete enters the contest and for the first time during the He is patted on the back and called a lucky season he is victorious .

His success at this despairing crisis is attributed to chance. fellow.

Can the trainer say what sort of force or being •this luck is which has enabled the man to win? It is well known that the condition for winning a race is the pul'iing forth of speed and' endurance in excess or those of the other competitors . · Our athlete has won and the only reason-able explanation for this is that he ha; satisfied the condition for winning. He gave an exhibition of superior speed and endurance.

The chance theorist must be ignorant of this fact, or it may be that in his eagerness to bring the cocurrence within the range of his theory he forgets the fact . And even then the argument runs in our favour for misjudgment is a note of ignorance.

Another man will put this problem to you . On a hloiday morning he was going down one of the principal thoroughfares of the city where many were passing long before he passed .

He picked up from the road a shi.lling which had escaped the notice of rthe other people . His question is, '· So what else can I attribute my find but to chance?" Now what are the conditions for finding that shilling? The eye must he in such a position as to allow the rays of light reflected from the coin

to fall on the retina . And, furthermore, this image must make impressions on the brain to let him recognise it as something valuable. He turns his head-an action in no way extraordinary-and the retina io affected. The message is immed'iately sent along to the brain, the man is conscious of the good thing lying before him; he picks it up, and there is the end of a natural occurrence. A turn of the head has done the trick.

Nowhere has luck been called in to explain. One person did not satisfy fully the conditions for keeping his money safely and the other has found it-as must of necessity be the case except it is lost in some inaccessible or obscure place.

We all knew Jim Crow of Albermere Street as a man who lived in straightened circumstances all his life. To the astonishment of all the following announcement is seen in the " Morning Review." " Erasmus Crow, a wealthy business man, died yesterday and left his fortune for a....nephew-Jim Crow." " What a lucky fellow!" is in everybody's ~outh. Jim's unexpected lift' has been attributed to chance. His unknown inexplicable being is held responsible for the occurrence. Now Erasmus was dying and was conscious that he could not carry his money to the grave. It must go to the State Funds or to a relative . In his affection he turns -over the pile to his nephew knowing that it will be good for him. This is quite natural . It can be explained easily. Had he been dissatisfied with Jim's conduct ten to one the State, would have had the benefit of 1the money. But the old man's affection was well placed-the poor man of Albermere wa, made rich. But luck was i;riYen the preference by many. It must therefore be concluded' tha~ luck is il ffection, or that they are words that c n be used interchangea.bly. If such is the case. then the majority nf us sho11ld worship ¡ at the shrine of this powerful and far-reaching factor-ch~nce, in recog-nition of that immortal affection our mothers v bore us. But this is not so.

Nothing happens by chance. For every occurrence there is a reawn. Law and order are foremost wherever Nature is working.

Action is always followed by reaction. If we but sit, ponder over a~d weigh the matter, the apparent mystery will be solved. Knock and' Nature's door will be opened. When we are too lazy. when we 1erme to think 1eeply, when we are ignorant of facts we diverge from renwn rnd attnbute natural occurrences to the mysterious-to the mexr,lical,ie. Some dav Human Intelligence will rise to a higher !eve! ; then and onl_v then, will we ~ease to speak contrary to reason,-then and only then,,w1ll chance be universally rejected: she will receive the coupde-grace.
