Harewood won a Tradt>rs' Bursnries Scholarship, a11d started as an apprentice at the engineering trll.ile, but his eyesight will not allow him to continue at this trade. We are informed that he will be returning to school next term.

We have played cricket f,,r the greater pr,rt of this tPrm. imd all of last term . We have not disgrace<l ourselves in the Garnett Memorial Competition. Next year we hope, however, to do much better with the bat and ball.

These are Queries, They say and Suggested Boolcs mid Their Auth01¡s. These articles this 'l'erm are not up to mark, hut we hop" as soon astbe boysundf'rstand jnstwhat is meant, th ... r.. will be a bigger response. We hope that all boys will take tbe hits in the spirit in which they are given. We would advise the writers of these articles -to keep themsPlves dark, and so allow the "hit" to do some gne8siug. The article Why I Should Enlist, is a "pepper-pot" from Forms III, II, and I. Some papers from the forms were so good that a bsolutel.v nothing conld be found to swell this contribution. 'l'he article as it is still shows how loyal and brave are the spirits of our bovs. Our Roll of Hunour is short this term but this is our third list. Onr tenm ns n whole was fair, and in .some cases good. Mr. Pilgrim was tlie stren!!th of the tea.m, as may be noticed by the batting averages.

The \,owling- departnwnt, of our team was our great drawback. '!'hem was no one to replace Gaskiu, our stock bowler of la.st SPason; but WP liopP to hav .. a bowler in Ewing, if he is still with us for the next season, whi eh I sincerely hope will he the case. Our fielding was not bad, hut it would have been better did we have a larger and better ground on which to practice.

The first fixtnres in the Garnett Memorial Cup Competit.ion were to take pht:!e on the 6th September, l!H5, but as we were t.ben in vacation, om match had Jo )Je postponed .

This match we played on the 9th October, 1~ l"''l'l'be sea~on opened with a 1natch in the Garnett Memorial Competition al(ainst t.he BG C.C. at. the Thomas. We won the tos& and sPnt our opponrnts in tu bat. After making 173 runs for the losR" of 8 wickets th t>_v declared their innil11!S closed. Our inning-s was opened b_v .lllr. Dolphin and B. E . Lewis. At the fall of the fourth wicket we had only scored 20 runs, then Mr. Pilgrim and V. I. K Wong became associated, and by hard bitting on Mr. Pill!rim's part and patient playing- un Won g's the scon> was carried to 96 runs, when WouQ' was given ont I b.w. aftn making 27 runs. 'l'he in -coming batsman then played until it was dark, when we had 121 runs to onr credit for the loss of 5 wickets, Mr. Pilgrim played a beautiful game for his chanceless 71 not out, and it W<1,S owing to his playing that we escaped a severe defeat.

Our next match was the one postponed from September as was statl'd Lefort>. We J,>layed against t.he Poli<'e C C. at Eve Leary. 'l'his team is a mu <"h weak er team than the B.G.C C., but Fortune was agaiust us, aud we lost by 26 runs. Our score was 97 runs and our opponents 123, The next played was against the A.S.C . Ju both our match PS, the first iu October ..>3rd and the retnrn on 22nd January, 1916, airaiust the A.s.C. we w .. re badh dPfPat!'d. Wong being the onlv oue to get into the doub le figur es in th~ first, l\Uhile in the return w¡ong and Gilkes wade the highest scores 16 and 15 respective'ly.

The uext feature was against the C.U.C.C. We lost this match, but drew with them ia the return. Our score in the first match was very poor, th t> total being only 45, of whieb Mr. Pilgrim c,,ntributed 21 in fine style. The return match was played undP-r trying conditions, 11s it had rained the night before ctnd nearly the whole morning. We lost the toss lmt our opponrnts sent us in. From tbe bPg-inuing, it seemed as if we wert> doomed, but tbPn came a marvellous staud. FJwing 'going strong' was joined by Chabrol. and it was not before they had added 60 runs to score that J!Jwing was c:1ugbt for 33 ruus. Our Rcore was then 90 runs. The captain wanted to declare his innings closed . lnit as (' h,tbn1l's sr-ore ¡was then 40 mus, and Mr. Franb hRd kindlv offeted a b"t to the first boy who maked /iO runs, he thought he woulrl g(ve hi,n a <'hance; hut it was uot to be. After Chabrol had added 8 more runs to his ,cort.', he playf'd a rising one, and was neatly takf'n in the slips.

WP then decl:ired our inniugs dosed. Our st.:ore Lein!! I l~ runs for 8 wickets. 'l'be C. U. C. C. started their innings aud at the call of time had scored 58 runs for 4 wickets.

The next match was a('ai.nst the G. 0. C, and this again re~ulted in a drn,1v. Batting first Olli' opponPnts made 151 for 4 wickets and declare<l.

This time it was Lewis, Mr. Pilgrim and Johnson who saved the t<-'am.

Lewis and Johnson madP our record 6.r~t wickPt stand of 46 ; Lewis attE1r playing br some time, had madEI 3:'i runs. when he foolishly ran himsPlf out. Mr. Pilgrim by a series of drives, quickly made his 30 runs . At the call of ti1J1e, our score wa.s I 08 for 4 wickets.

A draw was again the result of our match against the D. C. C. WP won the toss, and went in to bH.t. We started 11icely, but see wed to wa1 er until Mr. Pilgrim made his appearance.

After playing a magnificent game, Mr. Pilgrim was run out with his score at 65. With the departure of Mr. l:'ilgriw, the ~core rose slowly . Eventually, we were all put out for 135 runs. Our oppouent's final score was 109 for 6 wickets.

We have _yet to play two return matches, one against the D. 0. C. and the other agaiubt, the P. C. 0, but as we have already started our football season, we ishall not be able to do much in the hue of pract.ic,â&#x20AC;˘.

Sunday 14th. Glorious hot dttv. Httd an exercise ride in morning and took the horses in afternoon to big sand pit, for a roll.

We were OK in our ca1¡ as there were only 3 in it, along with 8 horses.

Tuesday 16.

Travelled all day and night, goiniz north.

Wednesdav 17th, 3 p.m.

Disentrained at Strazelle, near Hazedrouek Marched into Borre, waited there in drizzling rain with nothing to Pat till 8 p.m. when our billeting officer finally returned to lead us to billet, which was ;ibout 2 miles from Borre.

Talk about a mix up when we finally arrived. We went a hit too far and had to turn around on narrow mud road with ditch on each side full of water. Practicallv every waggon got stuck and had to be hanlPd out b.v main strength. l<~veryone was soaking wet and covered with mud when we got through . Had to leave the water c;irt in the ditch all night.

Slept in barn with the calves. The whole place was indescribably filthy.

18th to 1st,

Spent at Borre.

~1arch 1st, 9 a.m . Left to take up )st position.

Marched all day, blinding wet snow st.orm in afternoon billeted 8 p.m. near Sailly sur la

Lys. 2nd 3 p.m.

Left billet and took up position 8 p.m. at farm near Fleurbaix. Got guns into position and nerything finished after midnight .

3rd-31st. Spent at Fleurbaix. Did not fire much, about 700 rds. all told. Spent 5 ,ditys at forward gun position. (Pot roast!) p .m.

5th 8 a.m . Left here marched all day, crossed the Belgian frontier and billeted. about 7 p. m. at fa.rm on road near Watou.

6th-17th. Spent at Watou.

Left 3.30 p.m. passed through Poperhinge and billeted at " Chicken Fann "fort he night. We call this place Chicken Farm because everyone in the section spent all their time cbasmg chickens. ,Toe Starke.v finally spearing one with a sword, 18th 3 p .m.

Left-passed throu!.(h Poperingbe, Ypres and t ook up Hattie of Hill 60 in progresH, on position near St. Julien about 8 p.m. the way up could hear thunderous roar of artillery and the flashes lighted up the sky continually.

22nd. Had just finished supper about 5 p. ru. when we got S. 0. S. 2 R. 1. e. This is a message from 2nd Infantry Brigade, to come to t i,1.c ir "ssist,mce. \\~e ini mediately went into rnpid gun tire, then battery tire l second, then battery fire 5 seconds, This wa.~ the night that gas was first used. causing the Algerian troops on the left of St. J ulieu to break and retreat.

From 5 to 8 we firPd stea.dilv. Shells were whizzing overhead continnall_v, some hurstmg very clos~ to our posit10n. They' were evidentl.v g,.s bbells as our eyes started watering and smart.ed painfullv. The air w,Ls full of cordite fumPs from our own sh.,Jls. 'l'he A lgeri,ms w,·re streaming across thA fields in groups from 3 to 20-our own wound P.d were passing by, some supporting the others, some limping Hlong using their rifles as crutc·hes. The Germans advanced to within { of a mile of our position and were vlainly visible from the waggon line.

At 8 p.m. we retired in tlie direction of YprPs. While on the road . we received won1 that Gen. Turner's brigade had charged and driven the Germans back, so we went baek to our position. We got our guns back in position and to slePp a.bout 3 a.m.

Friday 23rd was quiet. but we bad no rations except what we swiped from an infantry battalion.

Saturday, 24th. Got S.O.S. at 3 a.m. Fired ~teadily without interruption until 3 p.m. First ordPr was 5 rounds per gun, one second interval, then it slowed dowu to J round each four seconds. Then we were ordered to deduct 50 yards from our range. This kept up for half an hour or so and our total dPductions amouut,ed to 850 yards. To anv trained artilleryman this showed the enemy were adv .. ucing. Then the wounded startt>d past. men from the l:3th (5th Royal Scots), from the 10th (90th Winnipt1g Rifl,,s). wounded Fn°nchies, A lgeriaus, Ate., Ptc. As they passed our gnus we'd ask : ·•How's things gPIU!! r" " Rotten, I'm the only man left Ill my compan_v, the trenches are all blown to Hell.-M.v God! it's t .. rribl e." Another--,-" There'8 uo one [,,ft in the trenches, the !)0th are all cut. to pieces."

The Shells were dl'opping all around, some just in front, some in rear, all the farm houses and barns were being shelled, there was a huge barn on fire jnst on our left, we couldn't hear anythin!!' the roar of the guns was so loud. Some batt.ery had their horses in a barn on our right flank. Shells dl'opped there so the drivers beat it across the fi..,ld with their horses. One man was leading a team of blacks along the road, a shell hurst and when the smoke cleared away there was no sign of either hor~es or man .

At 5 a. m. the ~iajor was wouuded, a. piece of shrapnel through the left arm.

By 6 am. our ammunition was finished. We got snme from the 6th Battery. They were just 011 our left, in the same field but were not firing at the time, as they were covering a different part of the front.

We were just finishing the amm we got from them when Lieut. Alex.

Mc i\l urtry came up with tour waggons. Later on in the morning Coprl Roddy Watt, and Cpl. Shirley brought up 12 waggons, and we also iutercepteJ 2 waggons meant for some other bitttery.

At noon Sticky came in from repairing the telephone wires and tnlil us Tomlinson, a B sub mau bad been killed at o,tr observing station. A shell came through the wall and burst. his left foot was blown off, right leg shattered and a huge hole in· his sidt1.

Ahout 1 o'clock the rift,• firp sounded much closer and rifl.,. b11llPl8 came buzzing by. Our teams came up and lined up in rear of the guns.

At 2.30 we stopped for a few minutes, ran our waggons out, hooke,l them in and they went away. Before leaving we dumµed all the shells on the ground.

A.t 3 pm. we got the order, "Gun Fire", i.e. each gun fir~ independently as quick as possible.

We had some trees stuck around the gun for cover and one started. to fall. Bill Williams, one of the gunners, said " Shall I take it away ?" " No, leave it. where it is." He either did not bear or else misnudt>rstood, b<·canse just after we 11rPd the nnt round Harry Lowe, lead driver of the gun tear:u, shouted, " My God, you've blown a man into the ditch."

This seems to be a nice place. 'l'he next place was Bermuda. Between Bermuda a11d St. Kitt's it was l'r"tt.V l'OU!!h. and as I am a poor sailor, l was sea-sick the first Jay out. l was alri!!ht aftlc'rwa rds. Between these two places we saw a whale, but he kept a g-ood wa.v off, about 100 yards We ,u rived iu Bermud>t aft..,r 4 da_vs, aud this seems to b... a !!l'aud place. We did not go ashore, but saw a g-o"d deal from the harbnur. There are six war8hips here, amoug them being the sister shiµs to the Good Ilope and Mnnmouth, which were suuk off the Falkland Islands, We also ~aw so111e bigger th.in these. Tb ... n we left here for St John 011 :--aturday and arrived there on the 'ruesd,ty after le,tving 8Prmuda. We had church Services on board Khip on the Sunda_v, but I was sea-sick, so di<l uut go.
