EDITORIAL NOTES. The School.-This term, last of the School year, is always the busiest, carrying as it does three examinations in its folds. 'l'o these examinations a fourth has been added this year, namely, the one for the Governor's prize of a bicycle to -the quickest calculator and mathematician of the school. This last examination comes off during the last week in May, while we have the Guiana in the early part of June, the School Examination in the latter part of the same month, the Cambridge Locals being up the rear on July 21st, we sincerely trust that in all these tests the name of the Old School will be maintained untarnished, and that the honours in store for us may be many and high. Should out¡ boys work as conscientiously this term as has been their custom in years past, we have no fear to meet these annual tests.

We are sorry to part with Macnie, whose health necessitates his going to a cold climate. Norton as a good footballer will be missed by the whole school, but in his place we have got two keen youngsters the Phillips brothers. Already Phillips ii, small as he is, has played

for the school, and had the honour of scoring the winning goal of the match. Most of the new bovs have come from Miss King's School, and we hope they will do as w¡ell, if not better, than others who have joined Queen's from that school. Football is the game of the term, and there is promise of the ward matches being keenly contested.

The "boys have made a keen start at the Carpentry _Classes, whi0h should prove of inestimable work to them all both now and in after life.

1'he 1l'lagazine.-With this number, our magazine has entered upon its second year, under its reduced size and new style. We think the opinion is general that the changes made have been for the better, and that the articles contributed by the boys have been of high standard.

For a school magazine there must be reports of some Events ,that are somewhat stale, but this must be if the magazine is to serve as a record of the school. We have much pleasure in publishing another ~f our "Reminiscences," and hope always to be in position to give our boys an insight into the olden times and customs of their school. Besides it poem, "Night," by one of our boys, there are the usual reports on the different games of the last term, and a full account of the Old Boys' Re-union.

THE SPORTS. (By S. J. Van Sertima.)

OuR annual sports took place on Friday, 25th April, on the G.C.C. Ground kindly lent for the occasion. They were, on the whole, a. thorough success, and of this we can be justly proud, especially when we consider that at one time there were grave doubts whether the event would be abandoned or not. The Collegians, however, proved themselves equal to the occasion; for when the awful fact dawned upon them, that unless more entries were received, the sports would be cancelled, they responded gamely to the call. Indeed, everything contributed to make the event a pronounced success. The entries were quite up to the usual standard. The racing was keen and full of interest.

The attendance, especiaUy of the fair sex, was good. The behaviour of the boys was exemplary; and, to crown it all, a bright warm sunshine, tempered by mild breezes, lent additional lustre to a scene full of mirth and gaiety. "Who will win the Governor's Cup?" Was the question that seemed to occur to every one. There was great doubt and speculation. As the bell sounded to summon the competitors to the list, every one looked forward to a keen tussle for supremacy. Nor were they disappointed. The Dolphin-Wong i contest was most interesting.

and both had the pleasure of seeing their efforts amply rewa,rded. Our sincere congratulations to Dolphin, who came out "Victor ludorum."

He specialised in flat racing and was unbeaten, winning the 100, 220, and 440 yards and thus securing the 12 points which brought him to victory. Wong i, on the other hand, wag more of an all-round athlete and although he had to bow to defeat on one or two occasions he must be heartily commended for his win of the Long Jump aud his plucky fight against his bigger rival. Wong ii was by far the best of the Juniors. He won the 240 and 440 yds. race and the High and Long Jumps with consummate ease, and throughout the meeting raced with admirable judgment. Shannon and Stoby were the best of the under 13' boys in the flat races, while Phillips iii did remarkably well in the High Jump.

Phillips i won " Throwing the Cricket Ball" (seRior) with the fairly good throw of 84 yds. 2 ft. 5 ins. Of the under 15' Fung-a-Ling was easily first with a throw of 78 yds. 1 ft. In the High Jump (seniors) Dingwall and Wong i did well, the former winning with a jump of 4 ft. 10 ins.

As usual, the Sack and 'l'hree-legged Races afforded much amusement. Peals of laughter went up as each boy fell and scrambled up and, anon, came down to mother earth again.

Indeed, if there was any dulness in the previous events, we are quite sure that these two ma.de up for it. Next came the Old Boys' Race. It wa,s a fine struggle, a.nd 1tt one time up the straight run there were so many on a level that it was difficult to spot the leader.

Harri~on eventually won, with Thomas and Cox dead-heat for second place, The Half-mile Handicitp was as usual a very interesting race.

Many there were who dropped out, but the remainder provided good sport for the spectators, especially ~ome of the under 13' boys who seemed at times to have set the Seniors a difficult task in overtaking them.

The Consolation Race was keenly fought out between Wishart i and Warren, the former proving the better in the end.

Then came the Prize-giving. In a short speech the Principal thanked the various donors for their kind gifts. He said that the Governor through unavoidable circumstances was absent but had shown his interest by giving a. Champion Cup for the Seniors. Lady Egerton had been kind enough to come to present the prizes. The G.C.C. were always ready to lend their ground for the annual invasion, and to them he felt we were all deeply indebted The Old Boys had again co,ne to our assistance and had proved themselves worthy sons of their Alma Mater.

Lady Egerton then presented the prizes to the successful winners, after which the Principal explained that the Governor had ~ent to express his regret at being unable to attend owing to his being away in the country.

FOOTBALL. (By A. Gaskin, Captain of Football.)

FOR two reasons football was started at the beginning of this term instead of at the middle as is usually the case. One reason was the unsuitable state of the weather at the time for cricket and the other the bad condition in which the ground then was. Before the latter could have been made suitable for cricket it would have needed a great amount of making up, involving a waste of both time and money.

During the term only four matches of any importance were played.

Of these two were won and two were lost. Our usual team was the following : Man-son-Hing i; Gaskin i, Mr. Pilgrim; Grant i, Payne and McDavid i; Phillips i, Gordon, Wong i, Norton and Wong ii. Towards · the end of the term Gordon was·unable to play and his place, was taken

by Horatio. McCallum and Van Sertima also played on various occasions.

Some difficulty was experienced in getting the members of the Club to atwnd prnctice regularly. Unfortunately, this was e~pecially tJ1e case with many of the bigger boys who are. expected to set the younger ones a good example. The former in many cases do not yet understand that it is their duty to uphold the reputation of the school in games as well as in school-work, and the sooner this. is realised the better it will be both for themselves and for the school.

In co'i:1clusion I should like to say a few words which I hope might catch the eyes of some of the defaulting parents. It is a lamentable fact that out of a school of 120 boys only about 30 have joined the games club this term. This becomes incomprehensible when one considers that for the small sum of two shillings a boy can have a game of football practically every afternoon for three months: It is to be hoped that in the near future parents will see that their sons join the games club and take part in_ a healthy, manly game, providing most fitting recreation after a day spent in sitting tamely on a bench in a dusty schoolroom.

CRICKET. (By R. V. E. Wong, Captain of Cricket.)

SINCE the beginning of the new year we have played two cricket matches, though, strictly speaking, the present is our Football Season.

The first of these was played on April the 7th, and was the result of a long-standing challenge from the Pln. Diamond C.C. to play them on their beautiful_ground at Pln. Diamond. The other one was played on our own ground on the 3rd May against a team of past Queen's ' College boys. The result of the former was a crushing defeat for us.

The ,latter which_was not really meant to be a test of strength ended in a victory for us by a large margin.

On the 7th April then, the team, (which on this occasion included Messrs. Moulder and Pilgrim) together with the Principal and a goodly numper of boys journeyed by Motor 'Bus to Pln. Diamond to play a~ eleven picked from the managers and overseers of the various suga1¡ estates owi:ted by the Demerara Company on the East Bank. The day, an ideal one for such an outing, was typically Demerarian. Bright sun with scarce a cloud to dim the clear blue of the sky and a pleasant breeze to temper the tropical heat. Arrived at our journey's end, we quickly made our way to the field where we found the groundsmen putting on the finishing touches.

Mr. Moulder, ·out· captain on this occasion, having won the toss, decided to have first turn on a perfect batsman's wicket. J. A. Pittock, their fast bowler, began the attack from the south end. The first ball of his over Mr. Pilgrim, much to the delight of the boys, sent hard past cover-point fo1· four. The remaining balls of this over brought no addition to the score. D. Brodie then bowled to Wong i, who put his second ball for a single. His third was treated in the same way by Mr. Pilgrim. The rest of this over proving uneventful, Mr. Pilgrim again faced Pittock. Three balls of this over had gone by without result when the batsman, jumping out to hit, missed and was smartly stumped.

After this, there was a steady procession to and from the wicket during which five wickets fell for sixteen runs.

At this stage Mr. Moulder joined Wong who was playing a patient game. Then followed a period during which it looked as if ou1· team would still put up .some semblance of a score. ·with Mr. Moulder cutting and gliding as prettily as ever, runs now began to come more frequently, and it was soon thought necess.ary to make a change in the bowling. Accordingly, S. Geering displaced Pittock at the south end.

His first over saw the dismissal of 'N o.ng i. Attempting to glide he mis-played the ball which flew up from the edge of the bat, on to his head and into the hands of Connell at second slip. As a result of this partnership forty-one runs were added to the srore. "\Vong made eighteen and took more than an hour to do it.

But misfortune seemed to be dogging the team. Mr. Moulder was bowled and caught ·off the first ball of the.next over by B rodie. On his return to the pavilion he was cheered for a well-made twenty-five.

After this even the most sanguine of our &upport,ers lost heart. The remaining three wickets went for twenty-one runs, which brought our total up to seventy-eight. Dingw1tll, with a six and a four, was the only other batsman besides Mr. Moulder and Wong to reach double figures. Brodie, who once played for the B.G.C.C. in first-class cricket, bowled extremely. A slow bowler, he kept a good length throughout the innings and got three wickets for twenty-eight runs. Geering captured three for seventeen and the remaining four fell to Pittock for twenty-four runs.

At about 2.30 p.m. the home team began their first innings, Garrath facing the bowling of Mr. Pilgrim from the south end. The first ball was sent to boundary amid cheers. Thb triumph was but short-lived for three balls afterwards, Garratt was cleaned bowled.

In the next over Pittock, the other of the first pair, faced Gaskin.

A single from this player put Samson to play Ga1kin, who dismissed him with the first ball. One for four, two for five was distinctly encournging and our supporterR began to get jubilant. This " rot " however was soon stopped by Brodie who now joined Pittock. Together they carried the score to forty-one when Gaskin bowled Pittock, who

had made ten. And so the score mounted. ¡while change after change was being tried in the bowling, four wickets fell for seventy-nine and five for one hundred and twenty-three.

After a half-hour's adjournment to the pavilion for tea,, Prest partnered Brodie and the score was carried to one hundred and eightyseven, when Samson, their captain, declared his innings closed. The feature of this innings' play was undoubtedly the superb batting of Brodie who carried his bat out for a chnnceless hundred and six. Our bowlers were not at all up to their usual form, Gaskin being the best of a poor lot. This player got two wickets for twenty-five runs.

At 4.45 we began our second innings, and at close of play had made sixty-one runs for five wickets. On the result of the first inninJs then we were beaten by l 09 runs and 5 wickets.

In justice to ourselves it must be said that we were completely out of form. As was mentioned above, football, and not cricket, ls the game that is at present being played by the school. This perhaps in some measure accounts for the overwheliuing defeat we suffered.

The match concluded, we repaired to the 'Bus, and, after giving three cheers for our hosts, began our journey home. On our return to the school at about 7 p.m., three cheers were given for the Principal.

Thus ended a thoroughly enjoyable day's sport.

Perhaps it would not be out of place here to record our thanks to the Pln. Diamond C.C. for their hospitality to us. The arrangements were perfect. It is only to be hoped that we will soon have the pleasure of a visit from them.

To the Principal, too, we are deeply indebted. It is due solely to his efforts and generosity that we were able to play a match su fat¡ from home. Such whole-hearted support can only be acknowledged iu one way-by redoubled efforts on our part to shuw ourselves worthy of it.

TROOP I. BOY SCOUTS. (By Patrol Leader R. V. E. Wong.)

THE Boy Scout movement in this colony, after a season of depression, is at present enjoying a spell of renewed activity. Perhaps in no other Troop is this more marked than in ours. From the beginning of the year until about the middle of last term, things were practicaJly allowed to take their own course. This was .i n a way natural. During the Christmas holidays it was impossible to have any parades since the boys were scattered all over the colony. This period of inactivity brnd a feeling of indifference ; and so the beginning of the term found the Troop in a state of coma more or less. But in our hour of need tho

strong man was at hand to deliver us. · Mr. Pilgrim, who had some time before a,ccepted the post of Assistant 8coutmaster but had hitherto hidden his light under a bushel, now decided to "stop the rot." At a general meeting he volunteered to hold a class for instruction once a week immediately afteL· school. This offer was eager!y accepted.

Further it was Jecided to have another parade regularly every week on Saturday at the Constabulary Depot. Since then the Troop has gone forward steadi 1y and rapidly. From 24 the membership has risen to 46. The number of rroficiency badges earned by the Troop has more than doubled itself, having gone up from 43 to 105. And all in three short months. The Troop has, so to speak, been dissolved and formed again. There are at present five patrols which boast of the names : Ibis, Labba, Chow, Hawk and Pigeon. TL·oop I in the form of so many birds and animals should, were are sure, prove a big mouthful for any other Troop.

In the Easter holidays we managed to have our regular two parades a week. Every 'ruesdav morning during those thr,~e weeks sa.w us tramping along one of our country roads on a route march. Two OL" three miles from t-own a halt woulrl be called, After a shoL"t spell of semaphore signalling an adjournment is made to one of the trenches, and for about half-an-hour we enjoy a "dip." Then once ag"lin we take the road for home.

Our Wednesday mornings from 9.45-11.30 were filled up by lectures from Mrs. Minnett. As a result we expect a great addition ~o the fourteen first-aid ba<lges we already possess. We take this opportunity to thank Mrs. ~Iinnett-. We thoroughly appreciate the kindly feeling which prompts her to give us so much of her valuable time. We can only hope never to give her ca.use to blush for us.

The visit of H. H. the Princess Marie Louise was the occasion of another busy time for us. V..7 e were out at least once, sometimes twice, every day, from the time of Her Highness's arrival to that of her departure, to form guards-of-hol'.lour. At every one of these parades, as was to be expected, we bad a full muster.

At the opening of the King Edward Memorial Hospital too, our services were requisitioned to form a guard-of-honour.

It affords us some gratification to note that at our recent School Athletic Sports, the Scouts, though far in the minority as to the numbers of entries, more than held their own against the rest of the school. In the eighteen events on the programme, they scored ten firsts and eleven seconds. Truly something t,o be proved of. But, were this to give us too high an opinion of ourselves and so cause us to " slack," it were better that we did not compete. So boys let us see to it that, when the Scouts' sports come off, we are in condition to uphold the honour of the Troop.

But in the midst of our triumphs death has been a:nong us. It is our painful duty to record here the death of a gentleman, who ha&, since its introduction in this colony, taken a most, ono can almost say the most, prominent part in the Scout movement. \Vo refer to the late Hon. George Garnett. Tl'Oop I. will alw'1.ys remember him as the man who set it on its legs. For was not his ten dollars, the first prize he or any other gentleman has ever offered for competition among the Scouts, the foundation on which we have built our pres::mt splendid financittl structure? This prize was offered to the Troop with the most observant scout. Aird, who has since left us, won this for Troop I. easily. "Affiiction's sons are brothers in distress." Then no one can be in a better position to express sympathy with Mr~. Garnett than ourselves.

We have also to record here another loss-that our club-room.

Since the formation of the Troop we have beim using in this capacity the ground floor of Mr. Aird's house at Kingston. This that kind gentleman has been letting us have free of cha1·ge. This month he has goue to live in the country, so, through no fault of his or ours, we have been left without a cJll:b.-room. We have been for :erl, therefore, to make use of a school-room whenever we have had need of a club-room.

Our Club furniture we have stocked in the tower of the school house.

The visit of Brigadier-General H ty is rapidly approaching, when t.he Boy Scouts will have to give an exhibition of their work. It therefore behoves us to live up to our motto and "be prepa,·ed" to give a good account of ourselves. To Troop I. has been assigned the task of showing what Boy Scouts can do in Semaphore signalling, Miniature Rifle shooting and Tent pitching. Boys, we have been asked to "show" him; then let us "show" him.

This is supposed to be a record of the affairs of Troop I., but there are two things which concern all t,he scouts, which may not be out of place here. Some time ago walking through some of our streets one could have seen in chalk, on tho gates and palings of houses, the signs used in the Scout games of tracking. The natural assumption of coursci is that Scouts had done it. We do not know which particular Troop was the offender, but we do know, and we are thankful for it, that Troop I. did not do it. Acts like these, though perhaps trivial in themselves, cannot but bring the Scout movement into disrepute. The usual practice in our Troop is for the trackers to carry with them wet rags to rub out the marks made by the tracked. This practice we recommend to any Troop which may like to in<lulge in this game.

The other thing is a suggestion which we wish to make. Both in Trinidad and Barbados the Boy Scout movement has been finally established. As fa1· as we know, Trinidad is the only place that can boast of a· Scout magazine. In this connexion we would l:!uggest the starting of an annual to record the work done by scouts in Trinidad,

Barbados and Demerara. This magazine could be edited and published alternately in the three colonies me1.1.tio11ed. We are sure that such a magazine can be made interesting aud will find a ready sale. It is fur our Local Association however to make the fil'St move.

And now to return to the affairs of Troop I. It is a well-known fact that our scoutmaster, Sergt.- Major Manly, throu~h no fault of his own, cannot give us all the time he would like to. In consequence Mr. Pilgrim has been doing the bulk of the work. This he cannot hope to continue to do if he has not the whole-hearted support of the boys themselves. One of our Scout laws is: "Help other people at all times."

How much more then should we help ourselves when otner people are trying to help us? Nobody likes being preached to, we all know.

But it is perhaps for the last time now that I am writing in this magazine as a scout for scouts ; and this must be my plea for pardon.

And now one thing more, brother scouts, the last .I will tell you through the medium of this magazine. Remember that ours is always to be the first Troop, first in name and first in deed.

THE DEBATING UNION. (By E. A. Q. Potter.)

LAST term was exceptionally short, and the debates corresponding· ly few. N evel'theless, in spite of the paucity of debates, the spirit manifested at the beginning of this the second year of the Union's renewed existence, was little, if at all, inferior to that displayed at the beginning of the first.

The subject of the first debate was: Has a nation a right to take possession of, and colonise any territory which it may discover ?

McDavid, who was the mover, maintained that discovery gives the right of possession and colonisation ; and th,.1.t in cases, where the territory is inhabited, the exercise of the right may almost be considered as tantamount to a duty, since the discoverers are almost invariably more civilised than the discovered. Potter i who was the opposer, contended that though in a few instances the discovel'er· may with some reasonable show of right take possession of, and colonise, discovered territory, that right did not proceed from the fact of discovery, but from other concomitant circumstances. On the question being put to the vote, the' mover won by two to one.

The subject of our second and last ·debate was : " Does freedom of discussion tend to produce schism and dissension 1·ather than forw1irrl the cause of truth? Surrey was the mover, Wong i the opposer.

Surrey abounded in illustratiom ; but Wong confined himself more or less to abstract reasoning. The voting at the conclusion of the debate, resulted in a c.omplebe victory for the opposition.

, THE CARPENTRY CLASS. (By E. F. McDavid.)

IN our last issue there appeared an article entitled, "Nuts, Bicycles and Quinine" in which the writer humorously inquired oc the boys, which of the three gifts they preferred. But we are far more indebted to His Excellency for his latest "gift" which was a result of his visit to the school in January last. This is the Carpentry shop which has been fitted up in the armoury of the Cadet Corps.

During the latter half of last term and the Easter hulidavs the necessary alterations were carried out, so that everything was quite ready for a start at the beginning of the present term. A class has been formed and on three afternoons a week, Mr. Buckley or the Harbour Master's Office, instructs the boys in the rudiment of carpentry. There are two classes each afternoon, one from fout¡ to five and the other from five to six. This is a great ad va.ntage to those mnmbers of the class who play football, as they are thus enabled to attend the class and be in time for practice at 5.15. What we shall do when cricket comes around, we cannot yet say.

Of course it is far to~ early to talk of results. But it m1,y be as well to mention that besides having learnt the names and the use of the various tools, the boys working together, have constructed a work-bench.

After thifl, it is intended that each boy should be free to choose his own task and to tackle it alone.

The benefits to be de~ived by a boy from attending a carpentry class are obvious. . Besides manual dexterity, he also acquires quickness of eye and intellect. A knowledge of carpentr.v, however slight, is always useful to a boy in after lite whatever his occupation m,Ly be.

This is so well realised in England that nearly every school is provided with a work-shop.

Finally, we would point out to those boys who have joined, that it is only by throwing themselves heart and soul into their work, they can hope to succeed, and that everything that is worth doing is worth doing well.

ABOUT half-an-hour aÂŁter the. boys of Queen's College had reassembled for another term-the firial for a good few, one small boy who had already come out on the play-ground to have a "howd'ye-do" kick at the football, asked of another whom he met hurrying in the di1ection of the big schoolroom, "what was the matter?"

The other asked him if he was such a ' mope ' as not to know that Mr. Moulder was going to be given a present. "What present?" asked the first boy wonderingly " .Why, the thing we've been subscribing for last term, you donkey. Come along, man ! " Without further pa,rley, they both went into the big schoolroom. I, having overheard their conversation, followed them. 'l'here was a goodly collection of boys and masters. The Principal was in the chair. Where was Mr. Moulder ? " I suppose he is hiding," said small boy No. 1. " No, 路 there he is!" said the second, pointing to where Moulder, all unMr. Pope conscious, was rectifying his mark-book for the term. , vacated the chair and called Mr. Moulder, presumably to occupy it. 路 The latter, however, did not do so. The boys got up from their seats, for Mr. Pope was beginning a speech. "I have been asked by the boys to present this on their behalf to Mr. Moulder. I do not know why they did not do it themselves. The task, however, to me is a very pleasant one." He went on to say that they all knew why they were making that present to Mr. Moulder-he had been the only person to make a century against the English Cricket路. Team which had recently come to this colony. A Surrey Captain had said that to make a hundred, no matter on what sort of pitch and against what kind of bowling required some amount of grit and self-confidence, and for that reason he offered to anyone who made a hundred runs in any match a chance of playing in the County XI. "I tried hard," said the Principal, "and I just reached 86." Here the boys were fairly caught unawares. They began clapping as if they would never cease. A philosophic Second Former owned up to me that it did seem a bit strange-to him at least. He had never seen the Principal playing cricket. Mr. Pope had to stop the boys to get a hearing. He explained that it was made on a bad pitch and against rotten bowling. Here I distinctly heard an "oh!" expressive of reaction after sudden surprise, escape the lips of that philosophic boy. The Principal went on to say that Mr. Moulder's century had not been made on a bad pitch and against bad bowling but in first-class cricket (" and by first-class cricket" added a Fourth Form boy who posed as a wit) and it had not been his first either.

"I have very great pleasure indeed," he concluded, in presenting to you, Mr. Moulder, this small token as a souvenir."

Here he handed to Mr. Mouldar the present, a very artistic little pend1mt inscribed with the crest and motto of the colony.

Mr. Moulder stepped fonvard, looking at his fresent. He raised his eyes. The boys began to exfect a long speecl1 but they were doomed to disappointment. He looked again as if for inspiration. He raised his head again, this time to speal: , " I I eally don't think I deserve this just for making a few runs," he began, (I guess not a few of the 1st XX l:oys would at all mind mak ing such a few.) Mr. Moulder contir.ued that there was one rarticulnr reason why he wa( glad. That 路 was that

he was an old College boy and that the College was the place where he learnt his cricket, and-hullo, my memory is beginning to fail me, or rather Mr. Moulder's speech was very short. He just thanked them for their kindness. He evidently kept in mind the saying " Brevity is the soul of wit." A rather good saying, that.

REMINISCENCES OF QUEEN'S COLLEGE. III. You ask me for my reminiscences of Queen's College so I will just jot down what I remember, with the hope that it may be found interesting. ¡well, my first connection with the good old school was really as an actor! Yes, my brother, the then scholar, was selected for the part I think of the fair wife of "Bombastes Furioso" (? Eliot Christian) and his young brother (the writer) must needs go with him to see what it was all about, when the Principal (Rev. Mr. Hoggins) pressed him also int0 service _as a soldier. My captain was Mr. T. A. C. Maskell, now a worthy member of the Audit Office. He seemed to me then a perfect giant, and he still retains this characteristic distinction. I joined the following term, but Mr. Hoggins had gone, and Rev. vV. G. G. Austin, M.A., the Bishop's son, was Principal, but being also Inspector of Schools, he could only give a few hours a day to the College. _ The school was then governed by the Bishop and manned from the clergy, and I may say that what time Mr. Austin did give was well and truly given, as the boys all honoured his grand and cheery presence. He was a man with a splendid voice and something of the style of W. G. Grace, I fancy. He was for years the Precentor of the Cathedral, and his father's chaplain and right hand man. I well remember hearing him once sing that renowned song, " The Village Blacksmith," and he certainly gave it grandly with the true expression that with him, "something" was always" attempted" and well "done," day by day, to "earn his night's repose "-My thanks are due to him for his many kindnesses, and I am sure he has reaped his just reward in the "Better Land"-" Requiescat in Pace." When the Rev. A. Gwyther, B.A., afterwards Archdeacon for Demerara and Rector of St. Philips came out, Mr. Austin practically handed over the school to him, and I wish to say that Mr. Gwyther, though stern to wrong doers, was an exceedingly kind and just master. I remember some commotion . was made about his having once well whipped two boys, but it was, I think, the opinion of all the right thinking boys that they deserved it.

Mr. Gwyther was a disciplinarian, a fine scholar and a strong man

withal, and therefore much feared. I am thankful to have had .such a master in my early youth, and often told him so since I reached the age of discretion. He lived above the school and took an interest in his boys-even in his after life, as I well knew. Mr. Gwyther is the only one of my masters .who is now present in the flesh, and I hope he will long live to enjoy his well-earned rest and pension. The Second Master was a Rev. Mr. Reynolds, but I cannot say much about him.

Then came Mr. Exley Percival, B.A., of Brasenose, Oxford, a.nd with him a revolution at Queen's, for it was tht;;n changed from a Bishop's to a Government School, and ·I am sure no one bettet· could have been found to do this than my kind and clever master, for Exley by name he was excellent in character and tuition. He never flogged in his endeavour to make us understand things, and I have known him explain a. matter more than four times until he was assured he had knocked it into our heads. He was always very neat and expected his boys to be so also, and when Mr. Percival waR around and had pl:iced his monocle up, we boys knew that his words would not be harsh, but kind and encouraging. We loved him more than feared him.

May he rest in peace. I could write more of him, but space will not permit. He also took a great interest in his boys both at school and afterwards.

Our Second Master, Mr. W. B. Eddy, B.A. (Cantab.) was of a somewhat different type, being bluff and cherry. He expected you to know things with little or no explanation. His greeting to you, whilst placing his elbows between yout· shoulders and pressing you down was generally "Well, old Hoss, how are you getting on?" and on your asking for information re any task, he would take a pen and in a quick manner run the thing through in a short way and then wonder we had not understood. He was noted for his hand grips, too, which gene rail y hurt one. In spite of all this however, he was very popular, playeu cricket with us, and had some up to lunch and for musical evenings upstairs where he and Mrs. Eddy iived. When I left College, I worked with the Mail Agents of the day (George Little & Co.), and sold him the ticket which took him to St. Kitts (I think it was) where he was lost in the bush while hunting, or something of the kipd. Every one regretted it very much.

We had also Mr. Barclay as a Master, he became afterwards Assistant Inspector of Schools. I did not see much of him as he taught the younger boys, but our French and German Master, Mr. Van Gelder, was much in evidence. He did not know how to manage the boys, and I well remember seeing a now well-known Medico being chased around a form by this master. The favourite thing for the boys to do was to learn some teasing German words, and a8 he took his seat sing them out. He used to turn as red as a turkey cock. I think he eventually went over to Surinam. He was a Dutchman.

The boys I remember jmt before I left Queen's were, on the form with me, (Bishop) W. Farrar, A. Ayala, now I believe a Merchant in Venezuela, Louis Kerr (Inspector Genernl, Mauritius) and W. A. Sampson, on the next form (Hon.) J. Hampden King (Immigrtttion Agent General) and his brother Robert (now dead), Frank (the banker) and James (the Doctor) Conyers and E. A. W. Sampson (Solicitor).

Further down these were Messrs. F. Fowler (Commissioner of Land;i and Mines), and R. 0. H. Spence, his Chief Clerk, N. Farrar (Postmaster General), (Dr.) Ramsay Hill, C. W. Anderson (I.S.O., Forestry Officer) and his brother A. B. Anderson (B. B., McC. & Co., Lt<l.), Lynden Kerr, A. Young (son of the then Lieutenant Governor), E. Garnett, J.C. McGowan (New Colonial Co.,) E. R. Forshaw, Barristerat-Law (now dead), A. Fernandes (Clerk of Markets), C. May (Deputy Inspector General), W. A. D. Hendricks (Stationer), H. and L. Vaughan (latter Commissary of Taxation), J. and H. Hutson ( Dr. Hutson's sons), A. :Binns (Lands and Mines Department), and other whom I cannot at present remember.

We had only the College half of the present grounds to play in, and our Cricket Club pitch was on the Parade Ground where we often had matches against the Georgetown Cricket Club, who had a pitch near to ours. Our star player was Louis Kerr, and our bowler Hampden King. There was a flying pole erected in the grounds, and we got very fine exercise out of it as well as on the horizontal, &c., bars. Our favourite games were "French and English" and "Prisoners base," and latterly we had a tenub lawn marked by boards to play on. The present Cricket Pitch was then covernd by tenement houses and a noisy lot they were too. .

Our Drill Master, Sergt. Major McGowan, was much respected as he was everything that w:ts gentle. I remember on account of my long shanks he generally made me head a squad. He has also "gone to his fathers."

I see the old Plum and Mahogany trees are still living, but our good old jauitot路, Henry 路w ebb, has long been "gathered to his fathers."

He was a part of the old school and we boys had a high re'-(ard for him. On the plum tree all the boys were 路 supposed to carve their names or initials. I do not know if they are still there. This was also done on the desks upstairs to the dissatisfaction of our Principal, but it is a practice that will never cease, I think.

The College itself has not changed much, but of course the occupiers have, and now-a-days I feel quite J.ost among them. I nevertheless, still have fond remembrances of the deiir old place, and beg nt>w to wish it, its Masters, and all engaged ther路e, a happy and prosperous time-for the Masters, lives of happmess and plenty, and for the Scholars, brilliant and prosperous careers.

The Treasurer regrets to report a falling off in numbers. In 1911 the number of members was 96, in 1912 it had dropped to 76, and this year it is just over 60. Such a condition of things, if continued, can have only one result-the extinction of the Association.

OLD BOYS' CORNER. E. L. C. Mitchell, who left us a term ago, has obtaine<;l a post on a sugar estate in Portuguese East Africa.

E. W. Reece, who acted at the College during Mr. Moulder's absence on furlough, has been appointed a Clerical Assistant in th_e Magistrate's Office, Georgetown. Reece has just passed the London Matriculation and has been placed in First Division. . We congratulate the following on their promotion in the Government Service: J. G. Gray, .Chief Clerk, Post Office, H. A. N. Burrowes, First-class Clerk, Treasury, B. H. Bayley, First-class Clerk, G.S.O. G. M. Kerry, who was Cricket Captain at Queen's a few years ago, has been doing well at Edinburgh University where he is studying Medicine.

E. R. D. Moulder and C. V. Hunter represented both the Colony and the Combined West Indies against the M.C.C. team. Our congratulations to the former on his century-the only one ever obtained by a local man against an English tenm. Mr. Moulder has now scored 556 runs against English teams, with an average of 28.

G. F. Boyce, who is about completing his .second year at Queen's University, Ontario, is the first winner of the N.F. Dupirs Scholarship (£60) for written and practical chemistry. \Ve are indebted to Mr. N. Farrar, the Postmaster General, for a fine clock which has been placed in the chemical laboratory.

ANNUAL REUNION. THE annual reunion of the Q.C.0.B.A. was kept up on Saturday, Mav 3,·d. The celebration took +;he form of a ci·icket m::i.tch, Present vs. Past, in the afternoon, and a smoking concert in the evening. In cricket mfttch the redoubtftble Mr. Moulder, Guiana Scholar, 1891, captained the old boys, while Mr. Pilg1·im captained the school team.

Owing to this term being set aside purely for footer, the wicket wa.s in a terrible condition ; indeed, it is ha.rdly proper to rall it a wicket, or the game, cricket. How did the mighty fall! For what poor scores were such good bats as Moulder, Johnson, Farnum and McCowan dismissed : No doubt all the oldsters tried to perform the feat, which every Queen's boy has attempted, namely, to put a ball over the tower.

But time and bad pitches'·wait for no man, the procession wa'3 continuous, the old 'uns walking in, walking out, the young 'uns in the trees and towet· cheering th~ir schoolmates on the field. Gaskin's shooters did the trick, while Estwick did the trick (the hat trick, of course). At 38 the last wicket fell and the school team at once opened their innings. The two Wongs between them made a "duck;" of course each made one "duck," so there could be no squabbling at home as to who should have the "drum-stick." With their example before the team, the opening was po<;>r and at one time it seemed as if the game would be a close one, but Dolphin defied the yard-breaks, the bumping ones and the shooting ones, and soon the boys were leading. The great fun of the game, however, was to see young Cox, 4 ft. 10 ins. in his

stockings (not socks, mark you) hit Mr. Moulder's twisters to the leg Nothing boundary, right over the paliugs, three times in 2 overs. pleased the small boys more, and many wondered if Mr. Moulder would spite Cox by putting him in the detention class for as many times as the number of runs made off his bowling. Van Sertima i and Dingwall made their height assist them in some way or other.

CONCERT. At 8.15 p.m., under the chairmanship of the Principal, the smoking conce1¡t was held. The attendance poor, the older 'old boys' were conspicuous by their ab~ence, and were it not for the younger generation who have just left school the concert would have been a failure.

At the commencement Mr. Pope made a short address in which he asked the members to try to turn out at the meetings and to take a keener interest in the Association.

The programme was an excellent one, the artists, being old boys, with the exception of Sergt.-Major Manly, the comic singer. Mr. H . N. Edwards (5 years "old") rendered two piano solos in his usual finished style, and was the general accompitnyist of the evening. Mr. Smellie (22 years) was in fine voice and deserved the hearty cheers accorded him. The others contributors to the programme were, Dr. R. F. Johnson (13 years), Mr. G, A. Pairaudeau (35 years), Mr. C. H. Lord (8 years) and Mr. B. W . Newsam (5 years). Mr. Newsam was exceedingly good in his stump speeches, and the audience were unwilling to let him leave the platform. The usual refreshments were in evidence, Messrs.

C. H. Lord, K. Reid, and E. 0. Pilgrim being honorary barmen for the evening. The evening was brought to a close at a late hour by singing the National Anthem.
