Last month, in his Spring Budget speech, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced extra support for green energy. While this was welcomed by the industry, leading trade body ECA is concerned that funds directed for infrastructure projects under the levelling up agenda could create a ‘postcode lottery’ for electrical contractors.
ECA head of Public Relations and Public Affairs, Jane Dawson said: “We welcome the boost in investment of £120M for the Green Accelerator fund to support the green energy supply chain, along with the promise of faster connections to the grid.
“Three quarters of electrical contractors are SMEs, therefore we welcome the raising of the threshold for payment of VAT to a turnover of £90k, although with cost of living increases we had hoped the threshold would have been lifted higher.
“ECA Member firms with fleets of vehicles will be relieved to hear the duty on fuel has been frozen for a further year.
“While we welcome funds directed for infrastructure projects in the regions under the levelling up agenda, we are concerned this will benefit Members in some regions, while others will lose out. This could create a postcode lottery of demand for electrical contractors, which does not necessary reflect the workforce available.”

Sector calls for safer public EV charge points
ECA supports the Government’s desire to increase the number of public EV Charge Points (EVCP). Its current approach, however, poses serious concerns about electrical safety in the public domain.
A Freedom of Information request by ECA in 2022 found that two thirds (66 per cent) of local authorities either did not have any strategy for EVCP installation or if they did, it failed to mention safety. ECA Head of Public Affairs Jane Dawson said:“Installing electrical technology, including EVCPs, can be complex and dangerous, with the potential for endangering lives through fire, electric shock or grid outage.
“EVCP Installers without adequate training do not have the level of competence required in other areas of construction. Training courses for local authorities must include installation considerations such as safety and competence.”
ECA, which represents nearly 3,000 electrotechnical and engineering services businesses across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, says the fastest way to speed up EVCP installations, and make the most of public monies, is for Government to fund industry recognised upskilling courses such as those with an Electrician Plus kitemark. At present, too many unrecognised short courses (including so-called bootcamps) and qualifications are getting the green light. These are not fit for purpose and are therefore wasting public funds.
To create consistent, high standards for EVCP installation, the installer voice must be heard on the new EV Infrastructure Forum, launched this week to discuss barriers to the delivery of charging infrastructure.
EV chargers set to double in the North East as local council partners with Connected
Connected Kerb, one of the UK’s leading charge point operators, has announced plans to more than double the number of electric vehicle (EV) chargers in North East England, following its partnership with South Tyneside Council.
The company has partnered with South Tyneside Council to deploy up to 2,100 new charge points. The partnership will mark the single largest installation of public EV charge points in the North of England to date.
The North East hosts just 2.7 per cent of the UK’s public charging infrastructure, despite being home to almost 4 per cent of the UK’s population. This equates to just 58 chargers per 100,000 people, compared

to 193 in London, demonstrating the urgent need to level-up access to charge points across the region.
The new deployment represents a 126 per cent boost to the North East’s existing network. Up to 2,100 will be installed in South Tyneside over the next 20 years - the largest single rollout in the North – with work due to begin this month.
The first phase of the installation will take place over at least 41 sites, including community centres, sports facilities and libraries such as Monkton Stadium, The Word and The Customs House Mill Dam car park. As part of the rollout, 43 existing charge points will be upgraded, increasing reliability and network uptime for users.
Stiebel Eltron ranked in top 50 best places to work in UK
Stiebel Eltron UK has been listed as one of the top 50 places to work in the UK with employees citing the company’s fairness, pride, and facilities during an anonymous survey. The leading supplier of renewable heating technology was ranked at 40 in Great Place to Work’s 100 Best Places to Work list with 98 per cent of staff giving it top billing.
Reacting to the listing, Stiebel Eltron UK Managing director Mark McManus praised the contribution of employees to the company’s office environment, describing it as a ‘unique’ and ‘special’ place to work.
The award comes as Stiebel Eltron continues to develop its facilities and offering to the UK’s renewable heating market, with
the company being a driving force for the adoption of heat pumps by providing the most innovative technologies as well as delivering comprehensive training to installers who will be able to fit them.
Following an initial £350,000 investment into a new state-of-the-art training centre and programme in November 2022, the company expanded its facility in September last year to increase capacity for new heat pump installers, which has so far seen more than 650 installers provided with in-depth knowledge and expertise.
Meanwhile, the company expanded its operations into the Irish market in February this year with a view to delivering renewable heating technologies and driving greener homes across the country.
In 2024 the company is committed to growing every aspect of the business, from investing in new renewable technologies and products, to further developing its training facilities and workforce.
Wilo welcomes weeding out of non-compliant circulation pumps
Following revelations that the Office of Product Safety and Security (OPSS) found over 85 per cent of domestic heating circulators it inspected last year were non-compliant, distributors and installers are being urged to look out for ‘fake’ pumps as they could pose a safety hazard to consumers.
The callout by Wilo, the efficiency-first pump manufacturer, leads on from the OPSS’ Delivery report 2022-2023, in which the UK Government department also disclosed that it had de-listed 38 domestic heating circulation pumps from sale.
Now, Wilo is urging distributors and installers to think twice, and check pumps hold the right certifications and markings before stocking or installing them in homes and heating systems. The manufacturer strongly advises that if it is ‘too good to be true,’ then it is most likely non-compliant and wants industry to spot the warning signs.
There are three checks Wilo is urging distributors and installers make on domestic heating circulation pumps, which are to:
1. Check the pump’s CE Marking
2. Check that the pump comes from a reputable pump manufacturer
3. Be cautious if the pump is significantly cheaper than similar market alternatives

SELECT skills specialist Fiona Harper is appointed to crucial role as new SECTT CEO
A respected industry professional who has already made a major contribution to training and skills in Scotland is to take as CEO of the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT), the approved training scheme for the country’s electrical apprentices.
Fiona Harper – currently director of Employment & Skills at SELECT and The Secretary of the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB) – will assume the role of CEO at SECTT on April 1.
She will succeed Anne Galbraith, who is stepping down after more than a decade of overseeing the development of electrical apprentices and adult trainees across Scotland and whose reign has seen record numbers of young electrical learners coming through.
Ms Harper has an unequalled track record, including creating SELECT’s industry training strategy and liaising with UK and Scottish politicians and civil servants on trade union and skills and qualifications issues.
She said: “I am delighted and honoured to have been offered this enormous opportunity and I look forward to the challenge of continuing the great work which has been carried out under Anne Galbraith’s confident guidance in recent years.
“We must now ensure that we keep seeing record numbers of young people signing up for rewarding careers and make sure we have a steady pipeline of welltrained talent emerging to safely cater for a society in which the future is so clearly electric.”

EJ Peak Technology Solutions wins place on United Utilities framework
United Utilities has appointed EJ Peak Technology Solutions to its Digital Services - Monitoring & Control, Design & Build framework following a competitive tender. Part of the Edwin James Group, EJ Peak is a digitalisation and industrial technologies specialist that helps clients to modernise and achieve their digital transformation goals.
The framework runs for an initial three-year period with the option to extend by up to five years. The framework aims to enhance Digital Services Monitoring and Control (DS M&C) capability to ensure United Utilities can produce year-on-year improvements through innovation and business improvement.
The scope and scale of the works will vary from simple ICA (Instrumentation, Control and Automation) installations to large complex design and build projects. The DS M&C scope of delivery will range from first-time install to upgrade, development, integration and optimisation of existing monitoring and control infrastructure.

Worley
will support Shell in delivering Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen project
Worley, a global professional services company of energy, chemicals and resources experts, has been awarded service contracts to help deliver Shell’s Holland Hydrogen 1 (HH1) project located in the Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The 200MW electrolyser will be powered by renewable energy from an offshore wind farm that is currently in development. Once complete, HH1 will be the largest commercial renewable hydrogen production facilities in Europe producing around 60,000 kg of hydrogen per day, enough to keep 2,300 hydrogen trucks rolling. The renewable hydrogen produced will initially be used at Shell’s Energy & Chemicals Park in Rotterdam to partially decarbonize the production of fossil fuels and support the
industrial use of hydrogen in the heavy transportation industry.
Under these contracts, Worley will provide detailed design and procurement, and construction management support services including the critical integration needed with key vendors and other assets such as offshore wind, pipelines, electrical grids and the refinery.
Work will be based in Worley’s office in The Hague and the business’s Global Integrated Delivery team in Mumbai, while also leveraging Worley’s global hydrogen subject matter experts and capabilities.
The contracts continue the close collaboration between Shell and Worley since late 2020 to provide early engineering services for this significant project.

National Gas Transmission secures Ofgem funding to explore Gravitricity’s H2FlexiStore
National Gas has secured Ofgem Strategic Innovation Funding (SIF) to study a new type of underground hydrogen energy storage – developed by Edinburgh storage specialists Gravitricity – as a potential technology in their plan to decarbonise the UK gas network.
Gravitricity has developed H2FlexiStore which uses the geology of the earth to store up to 100 tonnes of pressurised hydrogen in a lined underground rock shaft. Gravitricity says it offers safe, low-cost storage which can be located wherever required.
National Gas (NG) is investigating the potential of hydrogen transportation in using the current network infrastructure to support the Net Zero transition. Hydrogen storage could be a key element of any future hydrogen network and options are being reviewed and considered by National Gas to support supply and demand management.
They have now been awarded the first phase of a grant from Ofgem’s £450 million Strategic Innovation Fund to
conduct a three-month feasibility study on the use of Gravitricity’s H2FlexiStore, which could lead to a full-scale demonstrator project in 2025.
H2FlexiStore could then provide an option for intermediate storage across the UK alongside long term storage already in development with National Gas.
The project will be funded by energy network users and consumers through the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF), a programme from the UK’s independent energy regulator Ofgem.
National Gas and Gravitricity will now go through an initial Discovery phase which includes a feasibility study of two to three months.

Tell me more about your role at Zumtobel Group
My role as business development director involves identifying new opportunities for the company and considering work winning strategies for the company key sectors. With four decades of industry experience, I lead key projects such as Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Lee Valley Velodrome, and Manchester Velodrome. Coordinating a talented project team comprised of our experts is essential in securing lighting projects. I’m also passionate about mentoring sales team members to nurture their skills and contribute to their career growth.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
To be honest, all I do. Our brands are fantastic, especially when you consider how long we have been operating.Thorn began life in 1928 with Sir Jules Thorn and Zumtobel with Dr Walter Zumtobel in 1950. There are not many companies that can quote such a fantastic heritage. Being part of this legacy for two decades fills me with immense pride.
How has the industry changed since you entered?
Technology has revolutionised our industry, from manual calculations to sophisticated computer programs. The rise of smartphones, social media, and virtual meetings has transformed how we operate. Additionally, the focus on energy management, control technologies like Dali and Bluetooth, and sustainability initiatives are pivotal changes. But the fundamentals remain the same: people deal with people.
How is Thorn keeping up with these changes?

The fact that we won this award makes me very proud. I must mention the client themselves and the whole team at Lee Valley, who were excellent, as were the team from BDP, both of whom were so supportive, my colleagues Noel Whiffin, Chris Fryer and Susanne Straub, David Blair, and Martin Lee, who recently retired after a very distinguished career with the company. The installer, Elcom, went above and beyond their requirements and did a fantastic job, especially given that we had to use the existing lighting rig and be very innovative when installing our Altis floodlights.
What would your advice be for others thinking of entering?
I would encourage anyone who feels they are doing something just that little bit different to the norm to take the time to enter. It is such a good feeling to be recognised for what you do.

SOLAR INSTALLATION AT LEGRAND ACHIEVES CSR ROADMAP MILESTONE
Legrand UK & Ireland has saved over a tonne of CO2 in a single month with the installation of a solar PV panel array on the roof of its West Bromwich site, near Birmingham. The panels were installed and commissioned in October 2023 and, before the end of November, had saved 1,087kg of CO 2 emissions. The West Bromwich site serves as Legrand’s National Distribution Centre, housing a variety of Legrand products and components prior to shipping. The site is now home to 330 PV panels, each with the capacity to generate 500w as part of a 165kWP system.
This emissions reduction represents a significant milestone on Legrand’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) roadmap with this installation’s annual CO2 savings projected to be in the region of 29 tonnes. The Legrand’s latest CSR roadmap is the fifth the company has put into practice. The environmental part of the roadmap focuses on reducing the carbon emissions generated by Legrand and its supply chain, phasing out single-use plastics and increasing the use of recycled materials.
PV installation is just one of many ways Legrand is cutting carbon. Others include procuring more sustainable components and materials for the products it manufactures and designing those products to be as energy efficient as possible in order to help lower the emissions of its customers.

For the third year running, Legrand has received the Platinum EcoVadis medal, meaning that its practices are in line with the most ambitious objective of the Paris Agreement – namely, limiting the global increase in temperatures to 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels and achieving carbon neutrality.
UK POWER NETWORKS AND BARHALE BUILD TUNNEL TO POWER HS2
UK Power Networks has partnered with Barhale to build a micro-tunnel under the Grand Union Canal in West London to deliver power for HS2.
The tunnel will be used to carry power cables for HS2’s Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) set to build the high-speed rail line to Euston. UK Power Networks is providing HS2 with 45MVA of electricity supply to facilitate the construction of the high-speed railway.
Three new high voltage cable circuits around 3km in length will be energised to the Distribution Network Operator’s nearby substation which feed into the network that will power the manned TBMs.
Each of the Euston TBMs weigh over 2,000 tonnes and measures 140m in length. They will be delivered to HS2’s Old Oak Common station site later this year and assembled ready for launch in the underground box.
To connect the circuits to its Old Oak Common substation, UK Power Networks appointed civil engineering, infrastructure and tunnelling specialist Barhale to drive a
125m long tunnel beneath the Grand Union Canal, reaching the company’s substation on Atlas Road.
6m diameter and 15m deep caissoned launch and reception shafts were constructed before an Akkermann TBM was deployed to drive the 120m long tunnel beneath the canal. The 1500mm concrete tunnel was constructed from pipe jacked, pre-cast concrete sections.
The completion of the micro tunnel is a significant milestone for UK Power Networks and HS2 allowing for the final section of the 33,000-volt cable route to be completed.
Pamela Ali, programme manager, Capital Programme at UK Power Networks, said: “It has been a huge achievement to successfully and safely construct the micro-tunnel which will enable to install our circuits across the Grand Union Canal. A huge thank you to the HS2 and the Canal & River Trust for their support throughout.”

VISNET SUPPORTS EUROVISION
As the Eurovision Song Contest headed to Liverpool in 2023, the city enjoyed an incredible boost for the local economy, but there was also a substantial strain on the electricity network. SP Energy Networks enlisted the support of VisNet to bolster the low voltage (LV) electricity monitoring for the event by installing an additional 50 VisNet Hub’s on the network, doubling the monitoring capacity. It was imperative that the additional demand for the event didn’t negatively impact the thousands of people on the network, and as such, the additional LV monitoring capability was integral to keeping the lights on for the people of Liverpool, which is where the VisNet Hub comes in.
By increasing the capability of the network in Liverpool city centre for the Eurovision event, there was greater confidence in the monitoring system and it also allowed a much more versatile and agile approach to detecting and repairing pre-faults before they led to any costly outages. 7000M2 PV PANEL SYSTEM FOR £230M LOGISTICS HUB
Aztec Solar has designed and installed a huge photovoltaic system of over 3000 PV modules and 10 inverters for a new £230m logistics hub located in the West Midlands. It will save almost 550 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year which is the same as planting almost 21,500 trees.
The company designed the system to meet the hub’s kWh peak of 1260 kWp within the available roof space. The power will generate electricity for the operation’s internal and office spaces. Such will be the demand for electricity from the new unit that it will need its own substation and in common with other environmentally conscious organisations, the company wants to provide most of this from renewable self-generation.
With a roof space of 36,000m2 on the larger of the two buildings, Aztec Solar designed the PV system to provide maximum output while avoiding skylights and providing safe passage for future operations and maintenance and in case of an emergency.
Construction manager for Aztec Solar, David Ludlow; says: “This was a complex installation where unfortunately the main contractor went bankrupt and we had to work through variations to the original quotation to complete the job.
“Due to the speed of the installation we also had to work alongside a number of other contractors at the same time including behind the soffit manufacturer which meant that there was no scaffold edge protection since they removed it as they worked. This meant that our team had to use mansafe harnesses and inertia reels. We also imported and stored the PV panels on site ourselves and craned them up onto the roof space in just one week to minimise disruption.”
Planning for future maintenance and safety was critical. Aztec Solar specified 10 Solis three phase inverters, which provide high precision intelligent string monitoring to reduce future fault location time. For safety the system is integrated into the main fire alarm systems with a manual stop button for firefighter safety in case of an emergency.
The new logistics hub is due to open in summer 2024.
ACROSPIRE CREATE SAFER URBAN SPACES FOR TOWER HAMLETS
Hackney Wick, with its rich industrial heritage dating back to the 13th century, has played a significant role in East London’s history. However, as the industry grew, social challenges arose, with the area experiencing a rise in jerry-built housing and a decline.
Over the years, local authorities undertook initiatives to improve living conditions in the area, including opening public baths, a library, and clearing slums to construct modern housing. Recently, it has seen ongoing regeneration, with the proximity of the Olympic Park enhancing its appeal.
A local footbridge stretching across the A12, a vital pedestrian pathway, was previously illuminated with LED linear handrail lighting. Over time, several LEDs in different modules had failed, causing a significant reduction in lighting levels. This created a potentially dangerous situation for pedestrians using the footbridge.
Acrospire were approached by the Tower Hamlets council, seeking a prompt and effective solution to address the lighting issues on the footbridge. Acrospire accepted the challenge with a sense of urgency, completing the project within an impressive six-week timeframe from initial contact to
supply, demonstrating its commitment to solving the problem swiftly.
The project was ideal for the manufacturer’s InsertLED – achieving uniform lighting on the bridge deck. This cost-effective and quick-to-install handrail lighting solution was integrated into the existing handrails and infrastructure, reinvigorating the lighting on the footbridge. PUREAIR HOME PIV RIDS BUNGALOW OF SEVERE CONDENSATION
Vent-Axia has solved the problem of condensation for a couple in Shropshire. The Vent-Axia PureAir Home Positive Input Ventilation unit (PIV) was installed in Mr and Mrs Hopkins’ twobedroom bungalow in Shrewsbury. Built in 1982, the couple moved into the bungalow two years’ ago, but had a problem with condensation from the start. The couple tried using the trickle vents in the PVC double glazing to combat the condensation but this did not work. The condensation problem in the home was so severe that Bruce Hopkins became fed up of mopping the windows with kitchen roll every morning. The couple would also open the windows to increase ventilation but all this did was to make the bungalow cold.
Due to the condensation problem, Bruce bought a humidistat which showed that humidity in the property was 80 per cent. Bruce was determined to find a solution so undertook some research on how to rid a home of condensation. He discovered PIV was the solution, so visited his local electrical wholesaler, Alert Electrical, to buy one. Since Bruce already had a Vent-Axia extractor fan in his bathroom he chose a Vent-Axia PureAir Home. Bruce arranged for an electrician to install the unit and within two days of installation the condensation had disappeared. To Bruce’s surprise when he checked the humidistat the humidity in the home had dropped to 40 per cent. Since the installation of the PIV, the house has been condensation free. Boasting quick and simple installation the PIV unit is highly energy efficient, unobtrusive, near silent and helps provide a healthy environment. The PureAir Home’s discreet diffuser features Smart Air technology, which increases airflow performance by 10 per cent but at a lower noise level compared to traditional diffuser designs, while allowing control over airflow direction. Recent statistics from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) reveal a concerning trend: over 5,000 people were injured last year due to falls from height, with 40 of these incidents resulting in fatalities.
These incidents impact far more than just the people involved and their families; they result in nearly a million lost working days annually and financial losses exceeding £770 million. With so much at stake, it’s up to everyone in the electrical sector to step up and prioritise safety. In this guide, I explain how choosing the right equipment, adhering to rigorous safety protocols, and undergoing comprehensive training can significantly reduce the risks of working at height.
Selecting the right equipment
Choosing the correct ladder for your job is crucial. The specific requirements of the task (such as height, duration of the task and the working environment) should guide this decision, ensuring the ladder you choose is ideally suited to the job. Ensuring all your ladders conform to the EN131 European Standard will provide peace of mind. This international quality benchmark means they have been extensively tested for safety and reliability, whichever you choose to use.
Material considerations
For electrical tasks, the choice of ladder material is critical. Fibreglass, or glass-reinforced plastic (GRP), is an increasingly popular material amongst electrical contractors due to its nonconductive properties, providing an additional layer of safety in electrically hazardous environments. While GRP ladders sometimes come at a higher cost or with extra weight compared to aluminium alternatives, they are a far safer choice of equipment for those working around electricity.
Routine inspection and maintenance
Maintaining ladders to ensure they remain in optimal condition is essential. Regular, formal inspections are a legal requirement. In addition,
all users should carry out a quick visual check before each use to identify potential safety issues, such as cracks, loose rungs, or worn feet. Addressing these issues as soon as you spot them can extend the ladder’s lifespan and ensure your safety. NVC Lighting helps Blyth sports centre make impressive energy savings
NVC Lighting as helped Blyth Sports Centre reduce energy costs by thousands of pounds a year. Northumberland-based contractors JTR Electrical Services specified NVC Lighting’s high performance Oregon range to replace the old and inefficient high bay fluorescent fittings in the main sports hall.
For Active Northumberland, which manages and operates Blyth Sports Centre on behalf of Northumberland County Council, the installation of NVC Lighting’s LED solutions will result in huge savings of over £5,000 on its energy bills each year, a reduction of over 75 per cent. The energy savings and reduction in its carbon footprint also highlight Active Northumberland’s commitment to operate in the most environmentallyconscious way.
Leanne Beattie, operations manager at Active Northumberland, said: “The investment to transform the centre is about revitalising our services to give the facility a fresh and modern feel and ultimately, improve the experience of our customers.

The solution, offering efficiency up to 142 l.lm/c.W, was installed with a PIR occupancy sensor and light level sensor to maximse control for the Blyth Sports Centre facilities team and ensure a better quality of light for the centre’s users.

LIA strengthens commitment to emerging talent with Loughborough University initiative
The LIA recently completed a successful collaboration with Loughborough University and Holophane Europe Ltd.
Representatives from both organisations visited the university to broaden 150 students understanding of the lighting industry, with the aim to encourage them to consider the sector as a potential career.
The initiative focused on a product design brief, tasking the students to design an exterior lighting product, and encouraging them to research the different aspects of standards, regulations, existing products, and niche markets.
A panel of judges representing Holophane, and The LIA, assessed the submissions and selected the top three.
In third place was Lauren Adams. With a keen interest in night fishing, Lauren designed a lamp that attracted carp, as well as illuminating the fishers’ area, while also ensuring it was safe for wildlife and the environment.
The second winner Oscar Warman designed a sustainable, solar-powered streetlight that encourages birds to nest, with a built-in area for them to do so.
Aaron Varghese Abraham was announced as the winner for his genius solution of a lantern for use in the desert that uses UV rays to illuminate scorpions.
The three successful designers have been invited to attend the Spring LIA Technical Forum in April to present their product designs to key stakeholders in the industry.

Thorn creates digital and immersive experience for visitors at this year’s Light + Building
At the beginning of March, Thorn Lighting welcomed visitors to its digital and immersive stand at Frankfurt’s Light + Building event.
Surrounding the outside of the stand were areas focused on Thorn’s key outdoor applications – road and street, sports and urban and architectural.
Moving into the interior space, visitors were invited to explore the indoor application areas of office and education, retail and industry.
Alongside physical products and prototypes, visitors to 2024’s Light + Building got a first look at the City of Thorn. This 3D, interactive city was shown on large screens. In the City of Thorn, users can navigate through spaces that are all illuminated with the precision and innovation Thorn is renowned for and zoom into specific areas to examine the diverse range of products and control systems, including dark-sky friendly outdoor luminaires, sustainable panels for office and education, or connected industrial solutions.
Other notable innovations include HAP (High Accuracy Positioning) which was displayed in the retail and industry booths. Launching in spring, this technology can be used alongside Thorn luminaires to track people or objects, resulting in a range of benefits.
Already installed at Thorn’s manufacturing facility in Spennymoor (UK), visitors could view livestream data to see its real life usage. Thorn also previewed the Keyture solution, which is a new connectivity and IoT ecosystem. Launching later in the year, the luminaire compatible sensors amplify lighting control, enhancing energy and cost saving potential alongside asset tracking. Niglon’s wiring accessories
When you think of Niglon, fuses and strip connectors first come to mind. While these do indeed remain as a core offering for the Midlandsbased company, it has grown exponentially since then and wiring accessories now form a significant and growing part of sales. First introduced nearly two decades ago, there are now over 1,000 products across nine ranges to choose from; a significant investment for the company. Recognising that its own decorative plate finishes (brushed and polished chrome) were not as comprehensive as required, In 2024 Niglon

Wiring systems and accessories
understanding the terms

The use of language when describing electrical terms matters. Confusion over terms has been the cause of many errors as people seek to interpret what a word or phrase means. Part 2 of BS 7671 is an essential read insofar as understanding what a specific regulation means. It details the specific definitions to be used within the Standard and provides clarity of meaning to ensure that all those involved in electrical installation work are ‘singing from the same song sheet’.
Wiring system
A wiring system is described within Part 2 as: ‘An assembly made up of cable or busbars and parts which secure and, if necessary, enclose the cable or busbars.’ There are other definitions detailed within Part 2 for Flexible wiring systems and Prefabricated wiring systems.
A flexible wiring system is, ‘A wiring system designed to provide mechanical flexibility in use without degradation of the components.’
A prefabricated wiring system is, ‘A wiring system consisting of wiring sections incorporating the means of interconnection designed to allow sections to be connected together to form a given system and incorporating installation couplers conforming to BS EN 61535.’
A wiring system is, therefore, by definition, a combination of elements that when taken together form a wiring system, and it is within that context that any regulation referencing wiring systems must be considered. This combination might be for example, a sheathed and insulated cable clipped directly to a surface or single-insulated conductors within conduit or trunking. Chapter 52 covers the selection and erection of wiring systems. In addition to any external influences and installation methods, the designer and installer should consider:
• Cables and conductors
• Connections, terminations and jointing
• Associated supports or suspensions
• The enclosures or methods of protection against external influences.

It is clear therefore, that it is essential for any wiring system to be adequately supported. This will include support for any trunking/ conduit systems along with clips and cleats for cables. Regulation 521.10.202 is a particular
example worth considering. This regulation is relatively new and requires wiring systems to be supported ‘such that they will not be liable to premature collapse’. This requirement came about to limit the risk to firefighters from entanglement as they entered premises.
To address the requirement of Regulation 521.10.202, Unicrimp has a range of products that are fully capable of supporting wiring systems and cables. These include, ‘All-round banding’, ‘Fire safe cable clips’, ‘Stainless steel roller ball cable ties’ and ‘Metal LSF cable clips.’
Accessories
An accessory is defined in Part 2 of BS 7671 as: ‘A device, other than current-using equipment, associated with such equipment or with the wiring of an installation.’An accessory, therefore, does not require current to function. Examples of accessories are commonplace and include amongst others: Switches, Socket-outlets, Fused connection units, Connection units and Cooker control units and the like.
There are several regulations that relate specifically to accessories that a designer and installer should be conscious of. For example: Regulation 522.2.201 requires that parts of a cable within an accessory is suitable for the likely temperatures to be encountered. This requires the designer and installer to be conscious of where a rise in temperature may exist and to provide protective measures to mitigate their effects. Manufacturers have data sheets detailing the temperature operating ranges of their products.
Regulation 526.3 requires every connection to be accessible for inspection, testing and maintenance with certain exceptions. One such exception is for maintenance-free accessories suitably marked, conforming to BS 5733, and installed in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
It is important that the designer and installer selects those accessories which are suitable for the environment within which they are to be installed. Therefore, as with wiring systems, the factors to consider will include amongst other things, temperature, humidity, the presence of dust and the ‘look’ required (aesthetics).

Highest performing February for heat pumps in scheme history
In the latest data from MCS, there were 4,280 installations of heat pumps in February, which is the highest performing February for heat pumps in the MCS quality assurance scheme history, and third best month ever.
Wales ended the month out on top for installation uptake, with 8.62 per cent compared to Scotland’s 8.38 per cent.
Average monthly heat pump installations for 2024 is >4,000 (4,110), a 26 per cent increase on 2023 average, which was the best year ever for this technology. England has exceeded 1.4m all-time installations.
Battery storage again had its best month ever for installations, and the first to exceed 1,000 installations (1,248) This brings the scheme to date total for this technology to 7,410.
Installation stats
Installations totalled 17,224 in February 2024, a 6 per cent increase from last month and a 17 per cent decrease from February 2023 (excluding battery storage). Scheme to date total as at the end of February 2024 is 1,761,133 installations (excluding battery storage).
Solar PV saw 12,907 installations in February 2024, the third highest February installation count for this technology in scheme history. This was a 27 per cent decrease on February of last year, but a 5 per cent increase on last month. Scheme to date total as at the end of January 2024 is 1,466,469.
For heat pumps, February’s 4,280 installations was a 9 per cent increase on the previous month and a 45 per cent increase on February of last year. The average month installation count for 2024 thus far is >4,000 (4,110), which is a 26 per cent increase on the average count for a month in 2023 (the best year ever), which was 3,273. The scheme to date total as at the end of February 2024 is 225,215.
Battery Storage had a total of 1,248 installations in February, the best month ever for this technology (and the first to exceed 1,000 installations in a month), as well as a 977 per cent increase on the monthly total we saw for February last year. This brings the scheme to date total to 7,410 installations.
Installation uptake
As at the end of February 2024, from the perspective of raw volume, the top three areas for installations were Cornwall (36,774 installations), North Yorkshire (27,561), and Somerset (27,105). In terms of uptake as a percentage of households in an area, Orkney is top with 28.63 per cent of households, followed by Western Isles with 25.38 per cent and Ceredigion with 22.84 per cent.
At February month end, England saw its alltime installation count rise to 1,402,202, which accounts for an uptake of 5.80 per cent of households. At national level, this is the highest by raw volume, followed by Scotland with 207,286, then Wales with 116,089, and finally Northern Ireland with 32,999. However, when you consider this by percentage of households with installations, Wales have once again held top spot over Scotland, having an uptake of 8.62 per cent as at the end of February, compared to Scotland’s 8.38 per cent. England is third with 5.80 per cent of households and Northern Ireland is fourth with 4.40 per cent of households having installations.
Contractor stats
4,664 contractors are now certified with the scheme, with 119 new contractors becoming certified in February. 3,561 now certified for solar PV, 1,103 certified for battery storage and 1,747 certified for heat pump technologies.
In February, there were 2,271 active contractors carrying out installations, equating to ~50 per cent of the contractor base at the end of the previous month, which was 4,569. The number of active contractors carrying out installations has increased by 3 per cent since the previous month.
84 per cent of the active contractors carried out between 1 and 10 installations in February, with only 21 contractors carrying out more than 101 installations. The 283 contractors who installed 11-50 installations this month were responsible for the most installations (just over 29 per cent of total installations this month), followed by the 1,912 contractors performing between 1 and 10 installations (just under 28 per cent of total installations).
Breaking active contractors down by technology type, there were 768 active heat pump contractors in February (1 per cent increase since the prior month), and 1,774 active Solar PV contractors (3 per cent increase on the prior month). For heat pumps, two contractors installed more than 101 installations in February, with 88 per cent of active contractors only installing between 1 and 10 heat pump installations. For solar PV, 14 contractors installed more than 101 installations in February, with 85 per cent of active contractors installing between 1 and 10 solar PV installations.
For battery storage, there were 216 active contractors in February, with only 6 per cent installing between 11 and 50 installations. These 14 contractors were, however, responsible for 24 per cent of all battery storage installations this month. Of the 1,103 contractors currently certified for battery storage, 585 are yet to perform an installation, which translates to just 47 per cent of the battery storage contractor base being active for this technology.
Why we must challenge the myths surrounding heat pumps

The ‘consumer society’ – a phrase popularised in the 1960s – has shaped our shopping habits for decades. Buy, use and throw-away, is an established routine that affects raw material sourcing, supply chains, and waste management. All that is changing however, with the realisation that this approach could affect the global climate and the earth’s finite stock of natural resources. One way or another, all businesses must respond to environmental concerns. In the electrical industry, our customers are asking far more detailed questions than they have ever done previously about the environmental impact of products. Good for the planet, but is it good for business?
Last month global leaders came together at COP 28 to discuss action which would tackle the world’s most urgent and pressing environmental challenges. But as the summit reached its climax, controversy emerged as wording to phase out coal, oil, and gas was inexplicably dropped from the conference’s deal.
What ensued was a mass scramble of almost 200 countries on the conference’s final day as they looked to salvage a deal which would significantly reduce humanity’s impact on the planet. In the end, they just about agreed to include a move away from fossil fuels following furious condemnation on a global scale.
What’s clear is a widespread desire for greener initiatives which will safeguard the planet moving forward, with reducing carbon intensive fossil fuels top of the agenda. One such initiative is the decarbonisation of home and building environments, something which leading supplier of renewable heating products, Stiebel Eltron, is seeking to drive forward.
Moving towards sustainable heating resources, such as the adoption of heat pumps in buildings, will significantly reduce a nation’s carbon footprint. However, the transition towards heat pumps is being hampered by misinformation around the technology’s ability to perform effectively when compared to a traditional gas boiler.
Solutions presented to consumers need to be practical, viable, and above all, an effective option which they can have confidence will perform. So, it is up to the renewable heating technology sector to demonstrate to consumers why heat pumps tick all the boxes when it comes to changing their heating system.
A common misconception is that transitioning to heat pumps is prohibitively expensive, and
while the initial installation cost can be higher than traditional heating systems, it’s crucial to consider the long-term savings and benefits. Being highly energy-efficient, they generate lower operational costs over time, while many governments and energy companies offer incentives and rebates which ease the financial burden of their installation.
Meanwhile, there are concerns that heat pump systems consume a lot of electricity, however this is not the case. A properly designed heat pump system will use around a third to a quarter less electricity than traditional forms of electric heating. This is because a heat pump should only need electricity as drive energy, with additional energy required gained from the air, earth or groundwater.
Then there is the notion as to whether heat pumps are too good to be true and can they really be as green as highlighted. The simple answer is: yes. Heat pumps use renewable energy to generate heat, so no CO2 is created on site, and when combined with green electricity to drive them, none at all is generated. Heat pumps thus make a huge contribution to climate protection, saving around 2.5 tons of CO2 annually per system.
With 28 million households in the UK, this would see savings of 70 million tons of CO2 each year if they were implemented in every home across the country. This leads us to another concern that heat pumps are only suitable in new buildings, but the reality is that they can be successfully used to heat even the
oldest properties. Modern heat pumps can be used in renovations, even with radiators, when design is appropriate. Indeed, STIEBEL ELTRON estimates that more than 50 percent of existing heating systems could be converted to heat pumps without the need for major measures. Meanwhile, this could increase exponentially with greater will power from the government to drive forward measures to improve insulation and energy efficiency within buildings.
Another misconception is the inability of heat pumps to work effectively when air temperature is below freezing. However, heat pumps on the UK market today can work down to -25 degrees Celsius, with many designed with large surface areas allowing them to work better and more efficiently at lower temperatures.
The stark reality is that the negative myths surrounding heat pumps are largely unfounded and driven by the those with an interest in maintaining the status quo, no matter what the cost to the planet. Heat pumps will play a vital role in helping humanity rise to the present climate challenges and the renewable heating sector should demonstrate this.

Where does the buck stop with regard to HP installation safety and associated RCD selection? Chaz Andrews, technical manager, Doepke UK explores

Installation Hazard
Where fault disconnection within the required time, relies on the operation of an upstream RCD, using the incorrect “Type” of RCD in association with a HP leads to the risk of RCD “blinding.” The RCD cannot reliably detect fault currents as required by the Wiring Regulations (BS7671), increasing the risk of electrocution.
Modern HPs contain speed control inverters for better power efficiency and consequently must be used with specific types of RCD. The HP Company and the Electrical Installer are reliant on each other with regard to “the duty of care owed to the consumer,” relating to the combined safety of the equipment and the installation.
With circa 35,000 domestic installations in 2023 and a target for 600,000 annually by 2028, the market has all the classic indicators /potential risk of a race to the bottom. Installation safety may be compromised, driven by economic rather than technical decisions to achieve a competitive advantage.
Clear guidance in associated codes of practice is prerequisite, to helping improve the safety of HP installations. This supports existing and new entrants, manufacturers and installers to make safe and reasoned decisions.
Existing RCD Selection Guidance
The IET Code of Practice 2022 - Implementing Electrified Heat in Domestic Properties does not provide specific guidance on RCD selection. Currently HP applications are covered under the generic guidance given in BS7671 531.2.3.
To use this guidance, the specifier / installer (BS7671 133) would need specific design characteristics of the equipment i.e. they are reliant on the HP manufacturer to provide information on RCD Type and minimum sensitivity.
The Electrical Equipment Safety Regulations (2016) Regulation 9 “Instructions and Safety Information” relates to the provision of instructions and safety information. Based on recent survey of HP manufacturers available installation documentation, a limited number of HP Manufacturers / UK Suppliers actually provide any information / warnings relating to the connection of their products to RCD protected circuits.
HP Manufacturer / BS7671 generic RCD requirements
This a summary for HP equipment designers and suppliers to consider. If an RCD is required (BS7671 411.3.2); 531.3.3 refers to the use of
three Types of RCD (A, F and B). Characteristics of the load connected to the RCD determine the associated residual (Fault) current.
Type A RCDs : Ref 531.3.3 (i), (ii) and Note 1, BSEN IEC 62477-1, BSEN 62423
• Designed for sinusoidal or pulsed residual current generated at 50Hz (fundamental frequency).
HPs containing inverters for motor speed control are not suitable for connection to circuits protected by Type A RCDs: Ref BSEN IEC 62477-1 H.3 Fault current waveforms and RCD tripping characteristics.
The reason for this is explained briefly below i.e. inverters generate fault currents at frequencies less than or greater than 50Hz under foreseeable fault conditions.
HP Manufacturer / Type F or Type B ?
Residual (Fault) currents and RCD “Type”: The characteristics /design of the HP inverter, Example
and the location of the fault within the equipment determine the characteristics of the residual current. The selection of the Type of RCD must consider the fault current scenarios identified in the standards and by the manufacturer in their design risk assessment documentation - See example 1for single phase supplied – 3p out inverter without a power factor correction stage - ref. source BSEN IEC 62477-1 Fig H.3
An insulation fault IF1 on the DC side of the bridge rectifier produces a pulsed residual current at the fundamental (mains) frequency. This pulsed current may be superimposed on a smooth DC component, the effective value of which is a related to DC link voltage, smoothing capacitance, and fault resistance.
Limits for smooth DC fault current: ≤ 10 mA Type F or > 10 mA Type B.
Note: Type F RCDs do not detect smooth dc i.e. RCD will not trip if the 10mA value is exceeded
A fault IF2 located on the output stage (supply to motor) results in residual current containing multiple frequency components. Referred to as a composite residual current for design / test purposes* The composite residual current components have relative values defined at
the specific frequency; mains frequency, the motor frequency at 10Hz and inverter switching frequency at 1kHz. These values 10Hz and 1 kHz represent the most severe condition for Type F RCD tripping, providing reliable operation and effective protection when using Type F RCDs. HP design limits for use of Type F checked through equipment design calculations and testing:
• Ratios of the associated leakages current components compared to RCD sensitivity I∆n.
• Minimum motor speed control setting (frequency) 10 Hz
• Maximum inverter clock frequency < 1 kHz
• Maximum smooth dc fault current limit < 10 mA
If the equipment design characteristics cannot be guaranteed to meet the Type F limits, use Type B. Single phase supplied speed control inverters with power factor correction stages and 3 phase supplied inverters must only be used with Type B RCDs- see additional diagrams and recommendations in BSEN IEC 62477-1 H.3 For reliable operation, the total leakage current should not exceed 30 per cent of the RCD sensitivity – see 531.3.2. The operational leakage current associated with certain HP designs may
not be compatible with 30mA RCDs. Due to the complexity of the associated operational leakage currents, to reduce the risk of unwanted tripping, good manufacturing design practice would include operational tests on the HP model and specific RCD Types and sensitivity.
Conclusion
Installation safety may be compromised if HP Manufactures fail to provide clear information for installers. Using the incorrect type of RCD can result in unreliable and unsafe installations, causing problems for the HP manufacturer, the installer, and not least, the Customer.
Based on the availability of HP manufacturers documentation, those making clear recommendations on the Type of RCD that can be used safely with their HPs, are in the minority. Consequently, there is a requirement for additional guidance and clarification, to be included in the associated Code of Practice.
When considering the safety aspects of equipment containing inverters and associated RCD Type, the existing standard BSEN IEC 62477-1 2023 offers clear guidance to those drafting standards and codes of practice. Supporting installers in their decision making process with regard to HP applications and RCD selection, will lead to improved safety for the customer and fair competition for all players involved in the HP market.
“A move away from ‘fabric first’ is a step in the wrong direction…”
Paul Spence, technical manager for heatly, calls for caution when it comes to promoting that heat pumps should be installed regardless of a property’s energy efficiency credentials
Following a new report from Nesta, Insulation impact: how much do UK houses really need? which suggests the fabric first approach (i.e. making homes as energy efficient as possible) is not an essential part of the UK’s current stage in the heat pump roll out, I urge installers and heat pump customers to not take this as a cue to view energy efficiency upgrades as less important. Nesta’s report focuses on carbon reduction, and you can’t argue with the fact that ripping out fossil fuel heating and replacing it with cleaner, greener heat pumps will reduce the UK’s carbon footprint. The reality is that for most people comfort and the cost-of-living feature far higher on their agenda than cutting carbon. Let’s be clear, I am a big fan of heat pumps - as an installer and now as technical manager for heatly. I can’t endorse, however, the idea that we should move improvement of the UK’s woefully damp and draughty housing stock lower down the list in favour of banging in heat pumps as quickly as possible. This approach could serve to dent the reputation of heat pumps and ignores the consumers on gas that simply aren’t in a position to make the switch.
As an installer and through my Facebook Group Heat Pumps U.K., I see first-hand the problems that arise when heat pumps are installed in very inefficient homes. One of the main problems is over-specification, which leads
to higher costs and future problems. If heat loss is high, the size of the heat pump required to keep a building warm, increases. The bigger the heat pump, the more expensive it is. If, in the future the homeowner makes energy efficiency upgrades, the heat pump and ancillaries (pipes, circulators, pumps etc.) can end up being overspecified, leading to systems that use too much power and are difficult to control.
In Nesta’s report it states: “While better insulation is always beneficial with any kind of heating system, it is not an essential prerequisite for getting a heat pump. The key factors affecting a heat pump’s efficiency are system design and adequately-sized radiators. While insulation plays an important role in reducing heat demand, and can in some cases make heat pumps operate more efficiently, it is not the key factor in heat pump efficiency. Instead, having a well-designed heating system, with correctly-sized heat emitters which enable a lower flow temperature, is the most important factor behind a heat pump’s efficiency.” This is all true, but if the energy efficiency of the house changes, as is most likely the case in poorly insulated properties, the original design will no longer be suitable.
Crucially, without a fabric first approach, energy bills will be prohibitive. One of the arguments I’ve seen to counter this is raising gas prices and reducing the cost of electricity,
while everyone wants the latter to happen, it should not be at the expense of gas customers. 26 million homes are currently on natural gas, many of which are not in a position to switch to heat pump, it seems unfair that they should be penalised for something beyond their control.
This type of policy masks poor housing and poor heat pump installation by economics. We should be striving for a future where COP 4+ is the norm, which can’t be achieved without a whole house approach.
While Nesta’s report doesn’t suggest doing away with energy efficiency upgrades, I would just be cautious of the message that could be misconstrued by some readers. Where possible, ‘fabric first’ should always be the way to go. If carbon reduction by means of a swift switch to heat pumps is the only goal, homeowners and landlords will need far larger subsidies than the ones currently available, and the industry must be prepared for greater numbers of dissatisfied customers.

Protecting automated controls to enhance fire safety

Sprinklers are an essential component of a building’s fire protection system. Automation can enhance safety, as well as ease of use, but this means that the control system requires its own protection. Grifen Sprinkler Solutions requested Spelsberg UK to provide high durability enclosures that could withstand the demanding environment. The service required digital printing as well as CNC machining, but it was essential for this customisation to maintain the integrity of the enclosure.
To protect from the threat of fire, sprinkler system design and manufacture is governed by strict standards. Though these regulations are highly robust, some sprinkler system manufacturers say that standards can be extended further. “Key aspects of protecting a sprinkler system’s backup and maintenance, for example, are not completely included in the regulations, but ensuring the long-term electrical reliability of the system is important to optimise safety,” says Gary Noble, managing director of Grifen Sprinkler Solutions.
In the event of a leak in the sprinkler system’s supply, the resulting pressure drop would typically cause the pump’s motor to temporarily kick in, as if it were reacting to the activation of the sprinklers. These motor re-starts would happen continuously, drawing repeated high current and damaging the motor’s windings. Instead, Grifen’s Asset Protect functionality upholds long-term reliability by putting the system into safe mode and generating an alert, enabling rapid maintenance.
Optimising protection
Features like Asset Protect are the result of Grifen’s holistic focus on fire safety. The company supplies sprinkler system contractors in the UK and Ireland, with systems designed for domestic, industrial, and commercial buildings. This ranges from Category 1 residential dwellings through to Category 4 tower blocks above 18m, including the highest EN 12845 standard. Even Grifen’s sprinkler systems for individual residences are electronically controlled by an industrial PLC, with logic control and software functions authored in-house.
At the other end of the scale, Grifen’s fire sprinkler systems for Category 4 commercial properties include remotely controlled testing on a weekly basis. This optimises safety
by providing more regular tests than the regulations require and reduces the resources necessary for on-site inspection.
Automation enhances safety
The system’s electronics need a high level of protection. In the event of a fire, the enclosure must be able to withstand the initial heat. Then, the unit has to prevent water ingress when the sprinkler system is activated. The enclosures also have to be sufficiently durable to protect the electronic controls from any impact. Grifen uses Spelsberg’s high-durability industrial enclosures, manufactured from polycarbonate. These boxes protect in temperatures up to 80°C, sufficient to match the rating of the electronics, and they endure until the sprinklers activate to quell the heat. The enclosures can also withstand water jets and provide a high IK09 impact resistance rating.
To accommodate the automated system’s multiple cable connections, as well as the control unit’s digital display, every enclosure requires a CNC machining process. The digital display window, as well as the cable entry points, must be cut in specified locations and to exacting dimensions. Crucially, when the display and the cables are installed, the surrounding gap must be sealed to uphold the level of ingress protection.
High durability enclosures
Spelsberg provides all CNC work on-site at its Midlands facility, and although Grifen supplies its own drawings, Spelsberg’s technicians can also create CAD designs. Providing a test prototype in days, Spelsberg then despatched the full quantity of Grifen’s order in less than three weeks. As a result of the enclosure’s precision CNC machining, combined with specially designed cable glands, when Grifen installed the control unit, this upheld the high IP rating. “Spelsberg’s machining ensures repeatability,” says Gary. “It’s also a fast turnaround, so it’s become a key service for us.” Although Grifen’s control unit is designed to be accessed remotely, or via the digital display, the device is still required to present a variety of user and safety information. Spelsberg provides Grifen with digital printing directly onto the enclosure, providing a highly durable, longlasting finish. Combined with Grifen’s graphic design, Spelsberg’s printing service also ensures a professional presentation.

“Previously, we used stick-on labels. Printing directly onto the box is much more hardwearing, and it saves us significant time resource compared to manual application. It also ensures a high-quality finish,” says Gary.

Ruth Devine shares her inspiration, motivation and aspirations for the industry
Women in Construction Week, held last month, was an opportunity to highlight the achievements of the women within our industry, who now make up 15.8 per cent of our construction workforce. To celebrate, we caught up with Ruth Devine, managing director of SJD Associates, a Milton Keynes based electrical contractor, to discover a bit more about what inspires her, her motivation to make a difference and her future aspirations. Ruth spearheads change within the built environment sector through proactive support and development of apprenticeships and skills training. She is also a Lighthouse Charity Trustee and chairs the Charitable Services Committee. In recognition of her outstanding contribution to championing apprenticeships and skills development, she has just been awarded an MBE in the King’s 2024 New Year Honours list for services to Further Education and Apprenticeships
What inspired your passion to champion apprenticeships in the industry?

I worked for a global chemical manufacturing business upon leaving school, supplying aerospace and defence industries where quality control is paramount. I then joined my dad’s sole trader electrical company in 2006 to help him grow the business. I was amazed at the construction sector’s comparatively ‘relaxed’ approach to quality and training, and frankly concerned about my personal risk and liability. I used apprenticeships to train new electricians and upskill practicing electricians to the recognised industry standard (ECS Gold Card) to ensure reliability and high quality.
This was far from easy but ultimately worked well and was the catalyst for SJD’s continuing growth. I experienced huge frustrations with the apprenticeship system and training delivery, so I joined the skills committee of sector trade association ECA. I was invited to assist the pilot development of employer-designed government apprenticeships way back in 2012, and helped create the Installation and Maintenance Electrician Apprenticeship, the first new apprenticeship standard for the electrotechnical sector which launched in 2015, and one of the most popular standards overall.

I joined IfATE’s Construction and Built Environment Route Panel when it formed in 2017 and I’m still there now. I started working with what was the CLC Skills workstream a couple of years later and I’ve recently been appointed to the Building Safety Regulator’s Industry Competence Committee.
How can we ensure that skills training matches the needs of the workforce?
Employers are best placed to know what skills they need so it’s essential they’re involved in designing occupational standards and training. As one of thousands of small and large businesses in the industry working with IfATE, employers offer valuable insights and guidance that set the standards for apprenticeships and governmentapproved technical qualifications (in England). This approach improves quality and ensures that programmes match up to businesses’ true skills needs.
What are the benefits for apprentices starting a career in construction?

Apprentices can be confident that the skills they are developing are valued and relevant to the industry, setting themselves up for successful careers. Earning while they learn is an added bonus. What do you think are the biggest challenges for apprentices starting a career in construction?
The first big challenge is finding an apprenticeship. There’s huge demand which is only increasing as the apprenticeship brand becomes better known with students, parents and teachers. Construction trades are now in BBC’s annual top ten list of careers that teenagers aspire to. We need many more apprenticeship places, we’re talking tens of thousands more.
Technical education is finally getting the same respect as academic options, for example, apprenticeships will have UCAS points from September. Industry employers often have informal word-of-mouth recruitment practices, advertising all apprenticeships on the Find an Apprenticeship service is important to level the opportunities for anyone interested, especially women and other diverse groups.

If you could pass on one piece of advice to anyone starting in out construction, what would it be?
Make sure you choose valid training routes that are recognised by industry. In my role as Chair of The Electrotechnical Skills Partnership we created the ‘Rogue Trainers’ campaign for would-be electricians, although the principles apply to all trades. There are unscrupulous providers ripping people off with misleading claims about how quickly people can get qualified and earn serious money, if they spend thousands on training that ultimately won’t deliver. People get locked into expensive loans, then find the training material is rubbish, there’s no support and the contract wording means realistically they will never complete in time.
Use reputable industry or government sources of advice to identify career pathways. There’s various government and industry financial support available for many recognised qualifications.
What change in our industry could make the biggest impact?
Can we parachute a million women in to address the shocking gender gap? Women are stubbornly only around 2 per cent of apprenticeship starts for construction and built environment trades. A better balance would benefit everyone, there are encouraging signs but it’s very slow progress.
The Building Safety Act should have a huge impact across the whole industry in the coming years and I welcome the sharp focus on competence.

What have you learned in your career that can inspire others to succeed?

Your obligations under the waste regs
Lighting manufacturers, importers, contractors, end users and specifiers all have specific responsibilities under environmental legislation when it comes to dealing with waste.
There are legal duties regarding the sale of new lighting, and the storage, transport, and reporting of waste lighting, most of which is now classified as hazardous. What’s more, the legislation is changing, with new digital waste tracking due to start in 2025.
Specifically, the Environmental Duty Of Care Regulations, Hazardous Waste Regulations, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, place an array of legal duties and licensing requirements on lighting producers, distributors, and contractors which they must discharge if they are to be compliant with the law.

Can you tell us more about yourself, and your role?
As operations and communications director, and a member of the Senior Leadership team, my role covers a range of responsibilities across MCS. I oversee several key business functions, including our Helpdesk, Outbound Calling team, Communications team, Compliance team, and Scheme Management function. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities, making for a dynamic and engaging work environment.
A significant part of my role currently revolves around preparing MCS for the launch of the redevelopment of the Scheme. I’ve been doing extensive planning to ensure robust consumer protections are in place, collaborating closely with industry stakeholders to define requirements within the small-scale renewables sector and how we as a business continue to give the confidence consumers need to invest in renewables technologies to heat and power their homes. Collaborating with industry stakeholders, certification bodies, and government is a crucial part of my role. Last September, I had the privilege of visiting our newest product certification body in Shanghai, China. It was an incredible opportunity to engage with some of their stakeholders and learn about their plans for small-scale renewables across the globe. I’m also a proud member of the UK Solar Taskforce Communications sub-group, in which I work with other industry experts and government officials to help shape public communications relating to solar power, battery storage and associated policy. I am also committed to building on my knowledge and have recently undertaken a Mini MBA in Business Leadership to enhance my leadership skills.

What first interested you in being part of the industry and how did you join?
I felt passionate to join an industry that had purpose and can truly make a difference to the planet, people and the way we can decarbonise our homes. I was attracted by the challenges the
industry brings, and I naturally like to find solutions to these, or at least understand how we can work collaboratively to bring about change for the better.
Joining MCS has given me the opportunity to extend my own personal profile too and increase my industry knowledge. I really enjoy meeting and working with people outside of the company as I feel this is where I can really add value and be a true advocate of the great work MCS is delivering.
In the five years I’ve been at MCS, we’ve gone from a team of five to a team of 70. We’ve got a wonderful culture, and everyone works incredibly hard and is very passionate about our drive to give people confidence in home-grown energy.

How has the industry changed since you started?
Since joining the industry, I’ve seen significant growth in the number of consumers turning to renewable energy to heat and power their homes and small businesses. 2023 was a record-breaking year for small-scale renewables, with 229,618 certified installations registered across the UK. This marks a 33 per cent increase on 2022, reflecting both the growth of the industry and the great work MCS is doing to give people confidence in home-grown energy. There’s also been a noticeable shift towards greater female representation in the industry. MCS is leading the charge in empowering women within the renewables sector, and I am incredibly proud to work within a team of strong women who are working together to drive this positive change.

What advice would you give to women that are looking or maybe unsure about joining the renewables sector?
Joining the small-scale renewables sector is a rewarding career. It should be accessible and understandable to all. We need to acknowledge the positive role that women are playing in the industry, which can empower more women to join. I’d advise that they look at the females in our organisation and the diverse roles that they undertake. This achievement is a testament
to the value we place on cultivating a workplace that embraces the unique perspectives and contributions of individuals from all backgrounds.
What’s the biggest challenge facing the industry?

Thoughts on the future of renewables?

To fully meet the UK’s net zero ambitions, it’s crucial that the industry has dedicated and accessible training pathways for small-scale renewable technology engineers. MCS has played a significant role in this, contributing to the development of the UK’s first Low Carbon Heating Technician Apprenticeship. The apprenticeship will equip a new generation of installers with the necessary skills to design, install, and commission low-carbon heating technologies. We’re already seeing a number of young women enrol on the course, including a 17-year-old, plumbing student from Derby College, signalling a positive shift
towards greater diversity in the industry, whilst addressing the green skills gap.

Danny McBean, crowned 2023 SkillELECTRIC champion, talks to Lisa Peake about this great start to his electrical career, and what he does in his spare time to wind down
Ialways knew that I wanted to do something in the electrical industry. It started in school doing basically all the stem subjects with the original plan to go to university and study electrical engineering, but I quickly realised that I preferred to learn while doing what I am learning about, which is why I decided to go down the route of an apprenticeship.
I went looking for companies that were offering apprenticeships and through the help of school guidance teachers, was able to find the company I now work for.
Winning the SkillELECTRIC competition
It started when I got apprentice of the year out of my class and went on to compete in the SECTT apprentice of the year competition
for Scotland, and from there it was just natural progression onto the SkillELECTRIC competition. It was an absolutely amazing sense of achievement managing to progress to the final for the UK in something that I love doing. Even getting to the final is such a great achievement for everyone involved. I’m just glad that I could be a part of the whole competition and experience.
Now I am focussing on progressing within the company I currently work for. They have been very supportive of the competitions and are continuing to support me through competing with WorldSkills in the renewable energy competition going forward.
Full of beans
I have been going mountain biking since late primary school, but really got into it about
five years ago. It started off as just me and my mates hanging out on bikes as it was easier to get around. We discovered local mountain biking jumps and it progressed from there.
My first ever bike that I can remember was an apollo bike that you get from Halfords but my first “real” mountain bike was Trek Remedy 7 that I bought as an ex hire bike from Nevis Range in Fort William.
I love the feeling you get while going downhill on a single track trail, where nothing else matters and all you can focus on is what’s in front of you - completely zoned in on the task at hand, so to speak.
During a recent bike ride, me and my mates decided to camp the night before so we could have a full day on the bikes, but we probably choose the coldest night to do it. We woke up to snow and we were all freezing! Once out on the bikes, we could not even stay up right! We’d just slide down the trail, not able to stop because of the snow. Even though it was cold and miserable, it was all still worth it in the end for the memories and the laughs we all had while we were out. Safe to say a much needed warm shower was taken swiftly after I got home.
Nevis Range in Fort William is one of the best places I have been to while on my bike because of the World Cup track, but then again nothing really beats the tracks that are just a 10-minute cycle from my house.

Knightsbridge’s SpektroLED EVO takes downlight options into the 100s
The new SpektroLED EVO downlight from Knightsbridge – one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of wiring accessories and lighting – is an advanced evolution of the company’s hugely popular and innovative SpektroLED. Building on the versatility and flexibility of its predecessor, EVO offers selectable wattages, colour temperatures and six interchangeable bezel finishes and comes in three versions: fixed, tilt and smart.
When launched, the configurable SpektroLED downlight represented a huge leap forward in versatility and choice for lighting projects; offering unparallelled choice in performance, and style in one package, doing away with the need to specify multiple LED lamp types.
Expanding these permutations of wattage, colour temperature and bezel choice, the ultra-low profile SpektroLED EVO Fixed, Tilt and Smart offers a 108-downlights-in-one range solution.
Depending on the required illumination, either 5W (up to 465 lumens) or 7W (up to 795 lumens) can be pre-selected via a switch on the lamp body. Once chosen, there are four CCTs available –2,700K, 3,000K, 4,000K and 6,000K – the desired colour temperature also selected by a sliding switch. The LED beam angle is 60°and the tilt variant can be adjusted to 90o as required.
Further customisation is then possible through the bezel options that allow the lamp to complement or contrast with a room’s décor or colourways. The bezels come in a choice of six stylish finishes from popular white and matt black to brushed and polished chrome, and brushed and antique brass.
The downlights are fire rated for solid timber, web joist and I-joist installation for up to 90 minutes depending on material and are IC rated for retention of efficiency of mineral wool insulation in the ceiling void. With an IP65 rating from below, EVO is suitable for use in bathrooms and wet rooms.
As implied in its name, the smart EVO can be controlled for colour, temperature and on/ off using Knightsbridge’s proprietary SmartKnight app.

Then the downlights can be simply plugged in to complete the installation after decoration, avoiding the issue of paint-damaged bezels. The connectors also allow the luminaire to be removed for maintenance or even re-programming by simply unplugging them.
