Reuse, Recycle! North Somerset is leading the way with it’s recycling, litter and plastic free initiatives so to generate local interest and get people talking, a group of local Yatton residents have set up the Facebook group called ‘North Somerset Reduce, Reuse & Recycle’.

If you’re finding it difficult to understand how to sort your recycling, are looking for places to take difficult recycle waste items or just need tips and information on reusing and – reducing any type of waste - be it recycling, food, water, energy – please visit their group and request to join. They welcome anyone who has an interest in local community environmental issues from across the North Somerset area. As part of this community initiative, they

are also starting to coordinate ‘Plastic Free’ Yatton & Claverham, in association with Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) to reduce the amount of single use plastic in our area, as well as the ‘Adopt Your Street’ campaign, which asks residents to volunteer as much time as they have to spare to carry out an occasional litter pick on their street. The group would love to hear from individuals, groups and businesses who might be able to help them with any of the above exciting projects to help make Yatton & Claverham plastic free!

If you would like any more information on the above initiatives, please email them on: plasticfreeyandc@gmail.com or contact: Libby or Julia on the recycling Facebook group.

second death. There is nothing wrong with this type of Will. However, the disadvantage comes should the survivor remarry, suffer bankruptcy or need long term care. If the survivor remarries, then marriage automatically revokes previously prepared Wills. This means that the new spouse would inherit under the Intestacy rules if the surviving spouse did not make a new Will for the benefit of your children. If the survivor fell out with any of the children, there is nothing to stop the survivor cutting them out of the Will after the first spouse passed away. This is particularly relevant when there are children from previous relationships. Tenants in Common If the way the home is owned is changed to ‘Tenants in Common’ and your Will is changed to include a Life Interest Trust. Then whoever dies first, their share in the property is protected and the interest is ring fenced for your intended beneficiaries. If you would like a free consultation to discuss making a Will, Lasting Power of Attorney or Estate Administration please call 01275 851056 or email nicola@richardsons wills.co.uk

Your Will & The Family Home For most couples their home is their largest asset. The thought of it ending up in the wrong hands on our death or our partnerís death is horrifying. Most couples own their homes as ‘Joint Tenants’. This means that when one dies, the survivor automatically becomes the owner of 100% of the property. The majority of couples who have made Wills, have simple Mirror Wills which gift everything to the survivor when the first spouse dies and then onto the children on

Writing a will is preparation for the inevitable but Lasting Power of Attorney is more of a safety net. If you begin to lose your mental or physical capacity and you’re no longer capable of making your own decisions, the Lasting Power of Attorney ensures that your affairs are looked after by someone you trust. You can nominate friends or family, or someone that you trust to act for you, should the circumstances arise.

in the number of sudden deaths reported in our pet rabbit population. Although we cannot confirm the cause, it may be related to an outbreak of VHD2 (rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease) in the local area. The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund has released the following advice surrounding this possible disease outbreak: “There are two strains of rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease known as VHD1 and VHD2. Both strains are lethal and you must vaccinate to protect your rabbits. Both strains are spread by direct contact with infected rabbits, or indirectly via their urine or faeces. The viruses can survive for months in the environment and survive the cold very well. Vaccination is very effective and the only way to be safe.” As a practice we currently offer VHD2 vaccination as part of our rabbit ‘Gold vaccination package’. This package also includes an annual vaccination against VHD1 and myxomatosis. Rabbit Flystrike Flystrike (or myiasis) is a potentially devastating condition, common during the summer months, in which a blowfly lays its eggs on the rabbits skin, usually around the back end. This condition can unfortunately be fatal within 24 hours. Following important preventative actions can help reduce the risk of Flystrike: l Regularly removing dirty litter/bedding to keep the rabbits’ environment clean l Ensuring your rabbit is not overweight so it can clean itself adequately l Keeping any wounds on your rabbit clean and dry l Booking a consultation with one of our vets if your rabbit has any problem with urination or defecation, arthritis or any other problem which prevents it from grooming itself adequately l Thankfully, there is also a product to help reduce the risk of your rabbits developing Flystrike. This can be applied to the rabbits’ backend every 8-10 weeks during the at-risk season and works by preventing the eggs laid by flies from turning into maggots. It takes place at Hangstones Pavilion, Stowey Road, Yatton, BS49 4HS. The story follows Dr Henry Jekyll, a scientist working on splitting good and evil in mankind so to destroy all bad that happens in the world. However when Dr Jekyll’s proposal for use of a human subject is rejected by the Board of Governors, Dr Jekyll takes fate into his own hands and performs his experiments on himself. But something goes wrong and in the process he accidentally creates an alter ego of pure evil known as Mr Edward Hyde. Now Dr Jekyll has a race against time to find a cure and stop Mr Hyde before he gains full consciousness and control over them both. With more than 10 years experience in all types of tree surgery, the highly skilled team of professional arborist and tree surgeons at Swift Tree Surgery aim to provide the best quality service to their customers whilst caring for the environment. Owner Ben Swift says: “This time of year provides the ideal opportunity to carry out many of those jobs in the garden, of which tree surgery is one of the most vital. The trees are in their prime this time of the year

and most species can accept work being carried out on them without harming the tree.” For example, Crown Thinning – maintaining the tree shape and allowing more light into the crown whilst benefitting the trees health and providing light to your garden. Removing Dead Wood – by doing this now the tree will not waste the trees stored energy next spring sending sap to the areas of the tree that have no benefit. It is much easier this time of the year to see dead wood within the crown as the tree is in leaf. At this time of year trimming to native and conifer hedges should be on the to do list. In our experience trimming on a regular basis gives a thicker hedge, looking neater throughout the year. General tree inspections are also another good idea prior to those autumn and winter storms. “Many trees require planning consent when in a conservation area or have a Tree Preservation Order. Swift tree surgery can offer this complete service.” No job is too big or too small for Swift Tree Surgery. They offer a free no obligation quotation and a 24 hour emergency call out service and cover the whole of North Somerset and the Bristol area. For a free quote, telephone Ben Swift on 01275 463301 or 07802 480881 and for more information visit www.swifttreesurgery.co.uk l (See advert on page 23)
