T’S RAG DAY! More than ever this family village traditions needs your support! Go on down to the Green for the usual fun activities, starting with the pet show in the morning then continuing throughout the day. The Pill Festival Band will open the rag playing 12 noon on the green (this is the time the stalls open). Something for everyone. Fingers, as ever, crossed for fine weather!! We send a fond farewell and all good wishes to Kate and Andy Jopp, who (all going according to plan!) will hopefully read this before leaving the village for a long and happy retirement in pastures new. Thank you to them both for their active and positive contribution to village life over the years Andy’s departure has meant a re-constituted Parish Council and thankfully some new councillors. Full update inside with contact details. A reminder that the deadline for July is Friday 14 June. I always look forward to hearing from you. l PS: Delighted to know that Ivor has made a full recovery. You can’t keep the good ‘uns down! Jo Smith – Editor

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR CRASH LANDING ON HARDWICK ROAD Dear Editor On 23 April I crash-landed onto the pavement, my face suffering the full force of the impact. Within a couple of minutes, residents were rushing out to attend to me, dialling 999 for an ambulance, providing blankets, cushions, a toilet roll to soak up the blood pouring from my nose, Paracetamols, etc. The ambulance took 2¾ hours to arrive but these caring people of Hardwick Road stayed with me throughout, sitting me up and taking turns to stand behind me with a pillow so I could lean back onto their legs. This is what village life is all about, it’s called COMMUNITY. Very many thanks to all involved. For your information I suffered a broken nose, a whopper of a black eye, an egg-sized lump on my left brow, various abrasions and bruises to knees and hands and a badly jolted right shoulder. Nevertheless, I am still alive and kicking and seeing the funny side of it all. Thank you all once again. IVOR KING

speeding vehicles in our villages. I live on St George’s Hill and have witnessed many vehicles exceeding the speed limit, particularly in the direction of the A369; some I would estimate travelling in excess of 50mph and also using mobile phones as they drive. There are young children and elderly residents very often crossing the road - at great risk from these speeding vehicles. Motorists PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE RESPECT THE SPEED LIMIT and your fellow villagers before there is a serious accident and someone is killed or seriously injured. TONY HOLLYMAN

IN RESPONSE TO MR MASON’S LETTER Dear Editor Climate change is not happening because we are driving to and from school, it's not happening because of "summer barbecues" or "holidays". Whilst these things do contribute to the amount of atmospheric pollution we are producing, and reducing these things would be beneficial to an extent, the main source of dangerous waste is emanating from factories, power plants, and large global corporations. We won't save the planet, and stop what is incredibly quickly becoming a very dangerous situation, by choosing to eat sandwiches one lunchtime instead of a barbecue. We will save the planet by using alternative sources of energy, wind, tidal, hydro, instead of coal and oil. We won't save the planet by going on fewer holidays, but by enforcing strict recycling policies and minimising plastic production and waste. McDonald's with their switch to plastic straws is a step in this direction. The floating sea of plastic in the Pacific will not disappear because a couple of kids decided to walk to school today instead of being driven. These are serious issues, issues that cannot be solved by local efforts at 'green living'. What we should be doing however, is loudly and explicitly expressing our concern, outrage, and indignation, that STILL these issues are NOT being resolved. It's time to make a difference. If we don't now, it won't be enough. HARRY MANSFIELD

PILL & EASTON-IN-GORDANO PARISH COUNCIL – MAY 2019 The new Parish Council met for the first time on Monday 13 May. It was most encouraging to welcome four new Councillors, who bring a wide range of interests and experience. We started by recording our thanks to Andy Jopp for his outstanding service as Chair over the last ten years. He has been unfailingly professional, open and far in all his dealings and has set the standard for the way in which Council matters should be approached. We wish him, Kate and their family a happy and successful future in Cirencester. We also recorded our congratulations to Don Davies for his appointment as Leader of North Somerset Council. He will bring integrity, drive and enthusiasm to a massive role, and as a community we will benefit greatly from his continued commitment. FAREWELL TO ST GEORGE JFC U16S FOOTBALL TEAM Steve and Jean Collins say farewell to the team that they have known since some of them were five years old. Over the years the team has been relegated, promoted and even managed to survive a season unbeaten.

The cornerstone of the team has been Steve who is up early to sort the nets and home late after putting the kit away. Always by his side is Jean to support the team and collect the subs. Without both of them and other helpers on the day the team would not function. However, it might not be the last you see of Steve on the pitch as he now helps with the U8s so has another seven seasons to go.

MESSAGE FROM JUSTIN HUMPHREYS, HEADTEACHER ST KATHERINE’S SCHOOL St Katherine’s is a nurturing and diverse school community based on the belief that, as individuals, we all perform at our best when we feel confident, secure and valued. Along with my committed team I am passionate about giving every pupil an environment where they feel safe and happy so they can achieve their full potential. We do this through our high quality pastoral care and absolute commitment to wellbeing which makes St Katherine’s such a happy, thriving school. We also take full advantage of St Katherine’s size to create a friendly atmosphere where every child is well known and cared for as an individual. Our staff, like our pupils are energetic, passionate and committed professionals, who stretch and challenge our young people both inside and outside of the classroom – we all learn something new every day and it enriches and improves us all. Besides our track record of academic success – our GCSE, A level and vocational

subject results have improved every year for the last six years we offer a broad curriculum and extracurricular activities designed to develop our pupils into young adults equipped socially and academically to flourish in the world beyond the school gates. Our Summer Open Evening on 20 June is a chance to experience firsthand how St Katherine’s students learn. After a short presentation you will take part in mini-taster lessons that showcase our calm and purposeful learning environment. It is always a positive, fun experience for parents/carers and their children. We look forward to welcoming you.

PILL FESTIVAL BAND - THANK YOU AND ST GEORGE’S DATE

DONALD DAVIES, PILL WARD CLLR, N SOMERSET COUNCIL

Thank you to all those who supported our youth recital at Christchurch on 12 May; you were a fabulous audience. What a great afternoon it was and a big thank you to all our youngsters and Mary Donaldson’s piano pupils Lily, Jemimah, Elyssia and Evie, who performed their pieces so well. A grand sum of almost £200 was raised for the Pill Festival Band, which will go towards continuing our work in providing opportunities for our younger members to play, learn and perform music. We have exciting news that The Pill Festival Band is going to be playing at St George’s, Great George Street on Friday 21 June in the morning. We have the honour of opening their International Make Music Day celebrations and playing in their new beautiful pavilion-style extension; the glass doors will be open to the street for all to hear. Please check our website (www.PFB.org.uk) for the exact timings, which will be confirmed in the next few weeks and please come along and listen. It will be free entry. Another date to make a note of is our Summer concert on Monday 15 July at The Memorial Club 7-9.30pm.

Thank you everyone for your support, I am honoured to have been elected as your councillor for our wonderful community for the third time. I shall be holding my surgeries this month for residents at Abbots Leigh Village Hall on Saturday 1 June from 10-11am and at Pill Resource Centre on Monday 24 June from 2.303.30pm, no pre-booking needed. A private room is available on request. If you cannot make that time, please feel free to contact me with any concerns you have. DIRECTOR REQUIRED FOR J19 DRAMA GROUP'S NEXT PANTOMIME J19 had a year off, then returned with 'A Fairly Unlikely Tale in Camelot', which was very well received. So, they'd love to do it all again next year. They have a cast (although new members are always welcome), they have willing writers with pens poised, but no Director! Would you like to get involved with this local community group and keep the traditional panto alive in the village? Then call 07503 188514 or send a message via their fb page: J19dramagroup. This group has helped hundreds of young people and adults overcome their self- consciousness and express themselves on stage. Long may it continue.
