I everyone. It’s great to see so many local clubs and businesses doing well and getting involved in our great community – some are even winning national awards! This is going to be a busy month for me with lots of family birthdays and a wedding going on. If you haven’t already got plans for June, look inside and see what’s happening and perhaps make some. One event I must mention is the Portishead In Blooms’ Open Garden Weekend. This is their biggest fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from this event help them mintain our town and keep it looking beautiful, so get out and support them if you can. Please email me all your news and events going on in Portishead and we’ll do our best to publish it. Hope to hear from you soon. Deadline for July is Sunday 9th June Kim Batchelor

Your Will & The Family Home For most couples their home is their largest asset. The thought of it ending up in the wrong hands on our death or our partner’s death is horrifying. Most couples own their homes as ‘Joint Tenants’. This means that when one dies, the survivor automatically becomes the owner of 100% of the property. The majority of couples who have made Wills, have simple Mirror Wills which gift everything to the survivor when the first spouse dies and then onto the children on second death. There is nothing wrong with this type of Will.

However, the disadvantage comes should the survivor remarry, suffer bankruptcy or need long term care. If the survivor remarries, then marriage automatically revokes previously prepared Wills. This means that the new spouse would inherit under the Intestacy rules if the surviving spouse did not make a new Will for the benefit of your children. If the survivor fell out with any of the children, there is nothing to stop the survivor cutting them out of the Will after the first spouse passed away. This is particularly relevant when there are children from previous relationships. l Continued on page 5

Writing a will is preparation for the inevitable but Lasting Power of Attorney is more of a safety net. If you begin to lose your mental or physical capacity and you’re no longer capable of making your own decisions, the Lasting Power of Attorney ensures that your affairs are looked after by someone you trust. You can nominate friends or family, or someone that you trust to act for you, should the circumstances arise.

Portishead Summer Show Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 July. The Portishead Summer Show is a major event in the Portishead calendar and has continued to adapt to reflect changing times. The Show’s title has varied over the years, more recently known as the Portishead Flower Show and Country Fair. The Show has been rebranded in 2019 as the Portishead Summer Show as we felt that this better reflects what we offer - an opportunity for the Portishead community to come together in the Summer to showcase local talent and to enjoy arena entertainment which is not available at any other event in Town. We also wanted to encourage young families to come along so the accent is very much on activities for the children in addition to promoting local country life, nature and the environment. The Show schedule now offers over 300 classes to enter - horticultural, cookery, handicrafts and photography with something for all ages from pre-school to Senior Citizens. This year there is live music from The Chicken Teddies, The Marionettes, Rock Choir Somerset Coast and Portishead Concert Band. Arena Events include a gundog display, ferrets, falconry, companion dog show and fun sports. Sperring’s Equestrian will be bringing along their lovely pony’s and a mini farm. In addition there will be a Bungee Trampoline, Bouncy Castle and Punch and Judy for the children (the latter is however very popular with the older generation too). The Show is also hosting The Great Portishead Bake Off. A qualifying round will take place at The Poacher on Saturday 13 July. Message from Justin Humphreys, Headteacher St Katherine’s School St Katherine’s is a nurturing and diverse school community based on the belief that, as individuals, we all perform at our best when we feel confident, secure and valued. Along with my committed team I am passionate about giving every pupil an environment where they feel safe and happy so they can achieve their full potential. We do this through our high quality pastoral care and absolute commitment to wellbeing which makes St Katherine’s such a happy, thriving school. We also take full advantage of St Katherine’s size to create a friendly atmosphere where every child is well known and cared for as an individual. Our staff, like our pupils are energetic, passionate and committed professionals, who stretch and challenge our young people both inside and outside of the classroom – we all learn something new every day and it enriches and improves us all. Besides our track record of academic success – our GCSE, A level and vocational

subject results have improved every year for the last six years we offer a broad curriculum and extracurricular activities designed to develop our pupils into young adults equipped socially and academically to flourish in the world beyond the school gates. Our Summer Open Evening on 20 June is a chance to experience firsthand how St Katherine’s students learn. After a short presentation you will take part in mini-taster lessons that showcase our calm and purposeful learning environment. It is always a positive, fun experience for parents/carers and their children. We look forward to welcoming you.

Getting Ready for Summer at Avril’s

W

ITH the summer months finally here it’s time to get the garden ready!

As long as the weather is dry and warm, the weekends are an ideal time to get out in the garden and start preparing for the summer.

Larger construction projects are often undertaken at the weekends and so fencing, sheds, summer-houses and decking are often the first projects people think about during this time of the year.

There is plenty of treated timber sizes to make raised beds and edging.

The new yard surface makes it comfortable to walk round and view the ideas they have created to give you inspiration and plenty of parking. Since our last visit with the new shop, a display area of sheds, summerhouses and log/bush stores have been installed, which then flows into the furniture store, you are able to browse at ease. Then on the side of the shop is a large avery where you can view various birds and a beautiful golden pheasant – a real stunning bird.

Walking into the large shed there is a huge range of treated timber, planed and sawn, decorative panels and trellis.

Outside in the yard there is a large stock of heavy duty and featheredge panels, heading into another yard filled with loose featheredge, waneyedge boards, stakes, rails, stock fence and barb wire.

Avrils is full of tools and ironmongery to do the job.

SO POP INTO AVRILS AND GET YOUR GARDEN SUMMER READY

Is Your Body Dealing With Stress? Your body is amazing! It is constantly protecting you from perceived danger by encouraging you to either flee the danger or fight (fight or flight). While historically you needed this response to help flee from sabre tooth tigers, in present day society it is often not the most appropriate response to the situation!

This is a continuous on-going stress that often isn’t triggered by danger or a lifethreatening situation, and is increased by poor nutrition, a less than perfect sleeping regime, or emotional stress. Chronic stress can result in long-term damage in the body, causing physical symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, lower back pain, digestive problems, inflammation, weight gain and hormone imbalance as well as general wear-and-tear. Did you know that chiropractic can help with your stress levels? This stress causes tension, tension builds and builds, and eventually that results in pain in various parts of the body When a chiropractor aligns your spine, that tension is released, the body is relaxed, and the literal physical stress on the body is reduced.

Nowadays we can’t deny the BUSYNESS of life and the constant overloading our senses with info, rather than running from predators!

Additionally, when the spine is aligned, the central nervous system is unblocked and can function effectively. This means that your mind can think more clearly, and your body functions much better. Take full advantage of our OFFER below to see if we can help lighten your spine!

Meeting People, Having Fun and Raising Money for Charity at Portishead LeRoc Summer is on the horizon and there is talk everywhere of getting ‘beach ready’. Whether that fills you with horror or the motivation to get off the sofa, dancing is a great way to work your mind as well as your body. It improves fitness, balance, co-ordination as well as your memory and offers a great social scene too.

LeRoc – or modern jive as it is also known – is fun, stylish and can be danced to virtually any music, from current chart hits to big band swing, rock and roll, jazz and blues. Heather

runs the Portishead LeRoc classes and quarterly public dances and is keen to create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. She says: “Often people are scared of making a fool of themselves if they’ve never danced before, or they’re worried about coming on their own, but everyone in the class is welcoming and encouraging. If you go away having had l Portishead LeRoc Glad Rags Charity fun and with a Ball. Photo credit: M D Demers-King smile on your @ Just Us Photography. face, then that’s the most important thing!” The Portishead annual Glad Rags Charity Ball was held on 11 May, and people came from all over the south west and Wales to dance, enter – or just watch – the fun Dance with a Stranger competition as well as to raise money with a raffle. They raised £450 for the The Brain Tumour Charity to add to the overall total of over £20,000 that Portishead LeRoc has raised for charity over the years. The next big charity event is on 9 November when the 14-piece band “Bring Down the House” will be playing – put the date in your diary now! “Walking through the door of Portishead LeRoc was the best thing I’ve done,” said Anne, a class member. “It has changed my life!” Why don’t you give it a try? Rabbiting On About Rabbits – Care Advice from W&T Vets 1st to 9th June is Rabbit Awareness Week so we thought we should hop along and let people know some important considerations for bunny owners. Sudden Death in Rabbits There has been a rise in the number of sudden deaths reported in our pet rabbit population. Although we cannot confirm the cause, it may be related to an outbreak of VHD2 (rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease) in the local area. The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund has released the following advice surrounding this possible disease outbreak: “There are two strains of rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease known as VHD1 and VHD2. Both strains are lethal and you must vaccinate to protect your rabbits. Both strains are spread by direct contact with infected rabbits, or indirectly via their urine or faeces. The viruses can survive for months in the environment and survive the cold very well. Vaccination is very effective and the only way to be safe.” As a practice we currently offer VHD2 vaccination as part of our rabbit ‘Gold vaccination package’. This package also includes an annual vaccination against VHD1 and myxomatosis. Rabbit Flystrike Flystrike (or myiasis) is a potentially devastating condition, common during the summer months, in which a blowfly lays its eggs on the rabbits skin, usually around the back end. This condition can unfortunately be fatal within 24 hours. Following important preventative actions can help reduce the risk of Flystrike: l Regularly removing dirty litter/bedding to keep the rabbits’ environment clean l Ensuring your rabbit is not overweight so it can clean itself adequately l Keeping any wounds on your rabbit clean and dry l Booking a consultation with one of our vets if your rabbit has any problem with urination or defecation, arthritis or any other problem which prevents it from grooming itself adequately l Thankfully, there is also a product to help reduce the risk of your rabbits developing Flystrike. This can be applied to the rabbits’í backend every 8-10 weeks during the at-risk season and works by preventing the eggs laid by flies from turning into maggots. For more rabbit information please discuss with us – www.watkins-tasker-vets.co.uk
