Welcome Breakfast Nailsea School welcomed nearly 300 parents and children on Saturday morning to a delicious cooked breakfast. The Year 6 children, who will be joining the school in September, were given the opportunity to meet new classmates, explore the school and to chat to staff. The 94 families that came to event enjoyed delicious food and were excited to hear that the cooked brunch often features in the school lunch menu.

M a n y children set off to explore the s c h o o l leaving parents to chat over coffee. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the students looked comfortable in their new surroundings. This year the school has received a record number of entries and is looking at ways to make sure its catering facilities continue to run smoothly by expanding the provision. Assistant Head and Transition Manager Mr Mawford said: “The Welcome Breakfast was really well received; it was great to see the kids getting stuck in and exploring

their new environment and chatting to staff.

We run a number of transition events in the lead up to their start in September; we have found it makes for a more confident and progressive start to the academic year.” Year 6 pupil Edith aged 11 said: “I loved the breakfast and it was great fun having a look around the school, I even met a new girl called Jess.”

Your Will & The Family Home For most couples their home is their largest asset. The thought of it ending up in the wrong hands on our death or our partner’s death is horrifying.

Most couples own their homes as ‘Joint Tenants’. This means that when one dies, the survivor automatically becomes the owner of 100% of the property. The majority of couples who have made Wills, have simple Mirror Wills which gift everything to the survivor when the first spouse dies and then onto the children on second death. There is nothing wrong with this type of Will.

However, the disadvantage comes should the survivor remarry, suffer bankruptcy or need long term care. If the survivor remarries, then marriage automatically revokes previously prepared Wills. This means that the new spouse would inherit under the Intestacy rules if the surviving spouse did not make a new Will for the benefit of your children.

If the survivor fell out with any of the children, there is nothing to stop the survivor cutting them out of the Will after the first spouse passed away. This is particularly relevant when there are children from previous

relationships.

Tenants in Common If the way the home is owned is changed to ‘Tenants in Common’ and your Will is changed to include a Life Interest Trust. Then whoever dies first, their share in the property is protected and the interest is ring fenced for your intended beneficiaries.

Nailsea Neighbourhood Watch Nailsea NHW has been around for 28 years and is one of the most successful watches in North Somerset with 50% of Nailsea in the Watch, but they would love to expand the scheme. Just 5 Weeks To Go Before The 17th Nailsea Skate Festival Following on from the very successful spring clean at the Nailsea skate park where around 50 volunteers helped clear up the skatepark and surrounding area, organisers of the Nailsea community skate Park Festival are busy finalising arrangements for this year’s event. With lots of action not just on the skate park but in the millennium field around it, it looks like being another really popular event for the Nailsea community and surrounding area. The event will take place at the traditional venue of the Millennium Park (Next to Tesco) in Nailsea, on Saturday 8th June 2019, 1pm - 5pm. The festival is an amazing opportunity for anyone to showcase their skills.

Categories on the skate park will include skateboard, scooter and BMX competitions, there will be numerous stalls and activities to participate in and, of course, lots to eat and drink. Attractions on the day include a climbing wall with the Army recruitment centre team, the football cage and bus supplied by the community policing team, bouncy castle, as well as a youth space and a children’s zone plus loads more activities to be announced. Rabbiting on About Rabbits – Care Advice from W&T Vets 1st to 9th June is Rabbit Awareness Week so we thought we should hop along and let people know some important considerations for bunny owners.

Sudden Death in Rabbits There has been a rise in the number of sudden deaths reported in our pet rabbit population. Although we cannot confirm the cause, it may be related to an outbreak of VHD2 (rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease) in the local area. The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund has released the following advice surrounding this possible disease outbreak: “There are two strains of rabbit viral haemorrhagic disease known as VHD1 and VHD2. Both strains are lethal and you must vaccinate to protect your rabbits. Both strains are spread by direct contact with infected rabbits, or indirectly via their urine or faeces. The viruses can survive for months in the environment and survive the cold very well. Vaccination is very effective and the only way to be safe.” As a practice we currently offer VHD2 vaccination as part of our rabbit ‘Gold vaccination package’. This package also includes an annual vaccination against VHD1 and myxomatosis.

Nailsea Environment and Wildlife Trust (NEWT) will be holding its second Open Day on Saturday 1st June on the nature reserve at Moorend Spout. The Trust will also be running walks and talks about birds, butterflies and plants to be found on the reserve, and there will be children’s activities which are a great success, such as pond dipping, Pooh sticks from the Land Yeo bridge, and a treasure trail!

Rotary’s Nailsea Charity Walks and Runs The ever-popular Nailsea Charity walks, now in its 8th year are to take place on 9th June. The event raises money for local charities whilst having fun at a pace that is right for you. Over £26,000 was raised last year by 300 people registering to take part. You can take part alone or with family and friends and it’s great fun to walk through the local countryside, meeting others along the way. There is a small registration fee of £7 per person aged 18 and over, under 18 and children go free. Everyone who completes their courses will receive a medal and certificate. Tesco will be providing water and fruit to help you get over the finish lines. The courses vary to suit your ability whether strolling, walking or running, from The Nailsea 5km, The Nailsea 10km or The Nailsea 20km challenge. The 5km route is mostly on the level and is pushchair and wheelchair friendly. All routes, which vary from year to year, start and finish at Scotch Horn. They are all mapped and guided with signposts and an emergency telephone number is on hand if required.

Nailsea Availables – Call for More Drivers Nailsea Availables is a group of local volunteer drivers which transports patients of the local health centres to medical appointments when they have no other means of getting there. We give lifts to all the Bristol hospitals and clinics, as well as to Weston Hospital and to local health centres and clinics.

Drivers use their own cars and patients pay a mileage allowance to cover the drivers’ costs.

New drivers are always needed and if you think you could help please get in touch. We are aware that drivers will have other commitments and whether you could help out once or twice a week or perhaps only once or twice a month we would love to hear from you.
