Your Will & The Family Home

Happy Hounds

For most couples their home is their largest asset. The thought of it ending up in the wrong hands on our death or our partner’s death is horrifying. Most couples own their homes as ‘Joint Tenants’. This means that when one dies, the survivor automatically becomes the owner of 100% of the property. The majority of couples who have made Wills, have simple Mirror Wills which gift everything to the survivor when the first spouse dies and then onto the children on second death. There is nothing wrong with this type of Will. However, the disadvantage comes should the survivor remarry, suffer bankruptcy or need long term care. If the survivor remarries, then marriage automatically revokes previously prepared Wills. This means that the new spouse would inherit under the Intestacy rules if the surviving spouse did not make a new Will for the benefit of your children. If the survivor fell out with any of the children, there is nothing to stop the survivor cutting them out of the Will after the first spouse passed away. This is particularly relevant when there are children from previous relationships. Tenants in Common If the way the home is owned is changed to ‘Tenants in Common’ and your Will is changed to include a Life Interest Trust. Then whoever dies first, their share in the property is protected and the interest is ring fenced for your intended beneficiaries. If you would like a free consultation to discuss making a Will, Lasting Power of Attorney or Estate Administration please call 01275 851056 or email nicola@richardsons wills.co.uk

Cheddar resident and business owner Zoe Jay is delighted to now be offering a service she always dreamed of, having put her plans into action with Happy Hounds earlier this year. Zoe is an experienced pet owner and has a natural affinity with animals, giving her clients pets the care and attention she gives her own. Based at the very foot of the Mendips she offers fun and stimulating countryside walks, the additional facility of a private secure field, and home visits for all domestic pets for when you can’t be there. Contact Zoe Jay on 07747 066719 for details.

Writing a will is preparation for the inevitable but Lasting Power of Attorney is more of a safety net. If you begin to lose your mental or physical capacity and you’re no longer capable of making your own decisions, the Lasting Power of Attorney ensures that your affairs are looked after by someone you trust. You can nominate friends or family, or someone that you trust to act for you, should the circumstances arise.

Time To Run? The ultra challenging Cheddar Gorge marathon will be on June 15 starting out from Charterhouse. The 26.2 mile run includes some stunning, but tough, terrain and will include some vaulting over stiles as those competing traverse the Mendips. For the less hard core there will also be a 10km or a half marathon, but all of the distances include breathtaking running along the gorge cliff top path (many metres from the actual edge so don’t worry) which has the most incredible views across the Somerset levels and over the Bristol Channel. The race organisers have set a cut off of 3hrs for the marathon runners to complete the first lap (13.1 miles). Races will start at 10 am from Warren Farm with one hundred runners leaving every ten minutes but because so much of the course is off road there is not expected to be much disruption to traffic. Somerset’s Newest Rotary Club Makes First Donation

The county’s newest Rotary Club has made its first donation – a £425 cheque to BARB Search & Rescue, a Burnham-based charity that runs life-saving rescue hovercrafts and inshore rescue boats. Axbridge District Rotary formed late last year and is a satellite of the Rotary Club of Burnham-on-Sea. Aware that BARB is run exclusively by volunteers and requires £50,000 a year to keep its rescue service running, the Axbridge Rotarians decided to act. They staged a quiz in the local town hall and thanks to entry fees and other fundraising netted £425 on the night. Club founder and Axbridge resident Ric Canham said: “We’re a small and very new group so to raise this much from our first event is terrific, many thanks to everyone who took part or contributed including help from The Lamb, The Crown, Alvis Bros and PNT Electrical. The BARB volunteers do an amazing job. “This April alone they’ve been called out nine times to a variety of incidents ranging from rescues in mud to searches for missing people. Their CHEDDAR funds come entirely from CONCRETE donations. We’ve big hopes for our club and so many initiatives we want to support, why not join us? Not only can we make a difference here at home but also overseas by working with our wider Rotary network. “Trust me, helping others is wonderfully addictive, it’s a real win-win situation.” A BARB Search & Rescue spokesman said: “We are hugely grateful to Axbridge District Rotary for this generous donation towards our life-saving work. As a small, independent charity we rely 100% on donations to keep running and so support like really does make a difference. Awards Made at Cheddar Annual Parish Meeting Hannah More Cottage in Cheddar was packed at the annual parish meeting in April to hear Cheddar Parish Council chairman Peter Colton deliver the council’s annual report and present community service awards to local residents. A major achievement was saving Cheddar library from closure. Here the parish council worked closely with the Friends of Cheddar Library and provided funding for the self service book scanner. The council also won a major grant from the Hinkley Point Community Impact Mitigation Fund to extend the pavilion at Sharpham Road playing fields to provide a wider range of activities for the benefit of the whole community. Special awards were presented to a number of local people including Sue Purkiss, chair of the Friends of Cheddar Library, who received the award on behalf of the group for the work they have done over ten years in increasing the usage of the library by various community groups and, in the past year, for leading the campaign to keep the library open. garden and, more recently, the island beds in the River Yeo in the lower gorge, which have been much admired. He is also church warden at St Andrew’s and very active in church events. Suzanne Green was described as a village stalwart having at various times been secretary of the gardening club and twinning association, editor of Cheddar Challenger, volunteer driver for Mendip Community Transport and the chair of Cheddar in Bloom. Angela Wilson runs the friendship café at the library, which was established to support those with early onset dementia and their carers and has now been opened up to a wider audience and includes regular contact with Cheddar First School. The final awards were presented to Lyn Goodfellow and Paul Fineran for the exceptional work and time they put in leading the neighbourhood plan steering group and seeing it through to completion.

LOCAL NEWS

Be a Friend and Help Tackle Dementia A campaign to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding around dementia has got the support of the Parish Council in Winscombe. John Wilson, a Dementia Friend Champion is running a free ‘Dementia Friends’ Information Session on July 15 at 7.30pm and is inviting local people to come along. Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about the condition. There are currently 850,000 people living with this condition in England. Dementia Friends is about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends programme to visiting someone you know living with dementia, every action counts. The event will take place at the Community Centre, Sandford Road, Winscombe BS25 1JA at 7.30pm. As well as the Dementia Friends session, there will be information available from Alzheimer’s Society about dementia, local services and how businesses and groups can become more dementia friendly. The event will last an hour and a half in total, with the chance for people to ask questions. Having volunteered to be a Dementia Friends Champion John Wilson is now delivering Dementia Friends Sessions to people in this area. John said: “My wife died of this disease and I wanted to help to publicise the Alzheimer’s Society and the good work they do. It’s easy to get involved. I’m now proud to be part of a growing network of people creating dementia friendly communities together.” Jo Malyon Dementia Friends Regional Support Officer at Alzheimer’s Society said: “Dementia touches the lives of millions of people across the country. Dementia Friends was launched to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding that means many people with the condition experience loneliness and social exclusion. It’s all about learning more about dementia and the small ways you can help. From getting in touch with someone you know living with dementia to wearing your badge with pride, every action counts.” The Dementia Friends Session is free and everyone is welcome. The venue and refreshments have been kindly provided by the Parish Council.
