Portishead is magnificently situated, with sweeping views of the Severn Estuary, the Welsh coastline, both Severn bridges to one side and the beautiful and scenic Gordano Valley to the other.

The picturesque Lake Grounds offer plenty of space for children to play, and is ideal for relaxing, admiring the spectacular views or watching the cricket or bowls. This is a great place to picnic, and socialise with family and friends. Portishead’s stylish new marina development Port Marine, houses up to 150 boats and has been developed as the centrepiece of this new up and coming town.

The area is well worth a visit, to see the luxury homes, the striking public art and of course all the local shops.

THE PORTISHEAD PAPER Portishead has its own monthly paper delivered door-to-door to over 11,600 homes and businesses in and around Portishead. The A5 publication carries information about community groups, activities and events as well as positive features and news from the Portishead area.

YOUTH AND COMMUNITY There are a wealth of activities for youngsters in Portishead. The Youth Centre in Harbour Road plays host to play groups and toddler groups, offering ‘soft play’, pre-school ‘art appreciation’ and music and movement. The centre runs a Youth Club Mon-Thur, offering youngsters the opportunity to socialise. Every first and third Friday of the month there is a Youth Club held for young people with special needs, from

6.30pm to 9.00pm. The Centre boasts sports facilities and a multi-purpose music and arts studio and has run its own Radio Station broadcasting to the local community. The club is a registered charity and is managed by local people. For more details call 842461.

SPORT AND LEISURE Portishead is lucky enough to have two sport and leisure centres, one at Gordano School, St Marys Road, which offers a complete range of activities and bookable courts.

The other in Harbour Road offers a range of services and an indoor pool. The outdoor pool is generally open between April and September at the Lake grounds. Portishead has a thriving

PORTISHEAD IN BLOOM There are several opportunities for ‘green fingered’ locals to indulge their passion for gardening in Portishead. Supported by Traders, Town and County Council sponsorship, the volunteers of the Portishead in Bloom Committee did a wonderful job with their stunning carousel baskets, tubs and plantings in the High Street.

The Committee welcomes volunteers and financial sponsors to make the displays even better in 2019. Please see portisheadinbloom .org.uk for more information. Other horticultural groups are featured under ‘Clubs and Organisations’.

FLOWER SHOW This year Portishead and District Horticultural Society’s show will be entitled ‘Flower Show & Country Fayre’ and will take place on Sat 27th July (11.30am-6.30pm) and Sun 28th July (11am-6pm). The event takes place on the Flower Show Field at the head of Clapton Lane (opposite Gordano School) and there are competition classes to interest everyone. The society also organises a Spring Show. PORTISHEAD RAFT RACE The Portishead Raft Race will take place on 7th July 2019 from 11.30am-5pm at the Lake Grounds. Enter a raft or simply enjoy having a splashing time at Portishead’s largest free event.

VICTORIAN FAYRE AND CHRISTMAS LIGHTS Portishead is lucky enough to have an array of Christmas lights and plays host to the Victorian Fayre.

LOCAL ENVIRONMENT Recycling centres are situated at the Black Rock Civic Amenity Site, Valley Road. The site accepts refuse and has a range of recycling bins, there are also recycling bins in the West Hill car park (opposite Co-op).

Charity shops in the High Street are always on the lookout for saleable unwanted items and local organisation. The Sofa Project welcomes donations of unwanted furniture and electrical appliances which are redistributed to low income families, please telephone 0117 9547800.

SWIMATHON The Portishead Rotary Club holds an annual ‘Swimathon’ at the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre, to raise funds for local charities. CITIzEN’S ADVICE BUREAU The Portishead Citizen’s Advice Bureau offers its free, confidential, impartial and independent service every Monday from 10.00am until 2.00pm in the Folk Hall. The Bureau can give you advice on a range of subjects. There is no need to book an appointment.

COUNCILS Portishead Town Council represents the town of Portishead. Each month (usually on the 2nd Wed of the month) there is a main Town Council Meeting at the Folk Hall, High Street, Portishead, at 7.30pm, and the first 15 minutes of this meeting are for public participation.
