Starting Fresh(men), Avoid the Post-Grad Purgatory
In my final year of undergrad, I finally found the answer to the question that had plagued my adolescence: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” This question had been posed by well-meaning adults who probably weren’t about it thinking too deeply. The thing is, even though this question had been asked numerous times, I had never actually given it serious thought. I’d occasionally realize, “I should probably start thinking about it,” but then I’d quickly change the subject. What can I say? It always seemed so far away! That is, until my fourth year. All of a sudden, it seemed like there was so much to do and so little time to do it. Every job required years of experience,
and to get experience, you needed a job! I firmly believed that if Sisyphus lived in the 21st century, job-searching would be his hill, and deadend resumes would be his boulder.
Now that I’ve “been in the game” for a little under a year and am finally seeing some prospects, I reflect on each year I spent at York. I was studying, but I wasn’t working towards my career, and I wish I had spent my time differently. The following is advice to my younger self — what I wish I would have done each year to make the transition into the professional sphere a little easier: In your first year, spend your time getting to know the clubs and the campus. Find out whether or not you like your major. There is no shame in changing to something else. That’s exactly what I did, albeit a little late in my
degree. As cliche as it sounds, freshman year is the time to figure yourself out and hone in on your specialization. In your second year, start working towards a career path. Explore. Do various internships in your area of expertise (i.e., something related to the major that you decided to pursue the year before) to determine what you like best. I recommend the LevelUP program at Riipen (www.riipen.com/levelup), which offers $1,400 for 80 hours of work at any company — and you can do up to four at a time! This is a great resource to get your foot in the door and network. If you aren’t comfortable with the responsibility of an internship, do some volunteering! It takes a little digging, but finding volunteer work in your field is possible and super helpful to

Active Recall!
Amie Sosa Bilingual Journalist
As the school year begins anew, we once again find ourselves in the familiar whirlwind of tests, quizzes, classes, lectures, readings, and all that falls between. It often feels overwhelming and can easily sap our motivation. We might even struggle to figure out where to start, leading us to sometimes not start at all. If this situation feels familiar, don’t worry — I’ve faced the same challenge and successfully overcome “study paralysis,” meaning you can do it as well!
I’m currently in my third year of French Studies and Hispanic Studies at Glendon, and this year, my goal is to excel in my classes. Throughout August, I delved into various study methods and techniques, and stumbled upon a particularly effective one known as active recall. This method comprises several strategies, and I’d like to highlight three of the most beneficial ones: the blurting method, the Feynman technique, and pre-tests. Each of these techniques is powerful on its own, but when used in harmony within a balanced study routine, they pave the path to success.
The blurting method, often employed in language learning courses (perfect if you’re a French major), is a threestep powerhouse: Read, Write, Revise. First, select a small section of the reading you want to study, then close your book. Next comes the fun part: jot down everything you recall from that section without peeking at the text. This is the active part of active recall, where you force your brain to memorize and retain the necessary information. The final step is revision, where you return to the text and compare what
you wrote with the actual content. Repeat this process until you can easily retain the section’s information.
The Feynman technique is named after the Nobel Prize-winning theoretical physicist Richard Feynman, famous for his work in quantum and particle physics. This strategy involves simplifying and explaining a concept as if you were teaching it to someone else. Many experts suggest explaining it to a fifth-grader or a younger individual, as this can reveal any gaps in your grasp of the material. If you can’t find someone to explain it to — or your younger sibling simply isn’t eager to help — consider a toy or even your pet. Whether it’s a younger sibling, a favourite stuffed animal, or a pet hamster, the Feynman technique is an efficient method to bridge gaps and understand your material.
Though the most time-consuming, pre-tests are the gems in the study method world. They serve as a baseline and diagnostic tool, helping you focus your study efforts on the appropriate areas of development. Instead of diving straight into your study material, create a pre-test related to the topic you’re about to study. Transform your notes into questions and attempt to answer them all without looking at your notes. This approach prepares you for questions similar to those on your tests or exams, and helps identify your weak points.
Now, you might wonder how to incorporate these techniques into your study routine without overwhelming yourself. Step one is finding the right balance and discovering which methods work best for you. Rotate these methods between study sessions to keep things engaging. For instance, use the blurting method for language learning to improve your active recall of conjugations and grammar rules; employ the Feynman technique for complex subjects like linguistics; and use pretests to pinpoint your weaknesses before
each study session or class. Step two is consistency.
Establish a study routine that suits you and stick to it; make effective studying a habit. Step three is remembering the importance of taking breaks during your study sessions to prevent burnout and maintain focus. These three steps will keep your learning journey productive and engaging. As the school year progresses, don’t get disheartened if you face challenges. Learning how to study effectively is a skill that takes time to develop, and you might not
master it right away. Experiment with different techniques, study times, and approaches until you find what works best for you. Overcoming “study paralysis” and achieving success in your classes and throughout your university career is entirely feasible with the right strategies. Implement the blurting method, the Feynman technique, and pre-tests into your study routine, find a balance that suits you, stay consistent, and remember to take breaks. With dedication and perseverance, you can and will excel in your studies. I’m rooting for you!

position — that is, something in between short-term and long-term. Working with one company for an extended time builds credibility and is exactly what post-graduate companies want to see. If last year you decided to go to graduate school, now is the time to start ticking off the boxes to make that happen.
In your fourth year, hopefully, your job search from the third year is fruitful. You are in the mid-term role and are filling out or have already filled out your to-do list to go to graduate school. Start asking for recommendation letters and preparing your personal statements. If you’re not going to graduate school, start applying for longterm jobs. This is the time to secure a fulltime role in your career.

All in all, starting early in your job search can give you a leg up when it is time to find a job and avoid what I like to call post-graduation purgatory. My last piece of advice is timeless: don’t get discouraged when receiving rejections. It’s all a part of the process. If you get a response of rejection — instead of being corporately ghosted — that is a great sign! Ask for feedback where possible — maybe something in your resume or cover letter isn’t getting across. Don’t worry; you’ll get it. As they say, good things come to those who wait (and those who keep going).
Canada’s Last Remaining Women’s University to Close in 2024
Maria Eydmans

In recent years, Canadian urban architecture has followed a trend where modernity gradually supersedes tradition. This transformation is exemplified by the demolition of historic homes to make way for towering apartment complexes and parking lots. The erasure of historical structures extends beyond residential buildings to public spaces, as evidenced by the recent announcement of Brescia University College’s merger with Western University.
Brescia, the last remaining all-women’s university in Canada, unveiled this merger plan just last month, set to take effect in May 2024. Established in 1919 by the Ursuline Sisters to provide women ed-
ucation, this decision marks the end of 104 years of history. The announcement has sent shockwaves through both the student body and faculty, drawing criticism from those directly affected as well as media outlets.
The rationale behind the merger is purportedly Western University’s expansion ambitions. Some argue that changing demographics and increased gender equality have created different educational needs. According to Lauretta Frederking, president of Brescia, the agreement aims to “better position us to enhance educational outcomes for students with the greatest needs,” given that women now comprise a significant portion of post-secondary enrolments (56% women and 44% men enrolled in a university or college, according to Statistics Canada).
Yet, what remains unaddressed is the significance of preserving safe spaces for women. Whether driven by philosophy, religion, comfort, or physical safety concerns, a majority of Brescia University College applicants are drawn to its unique all-female community. As one Brescia alumna reacted to the news, “It’s sad to see such an empowering place for women close its doors.”
Despite the merger’s mission to “enhance educational outcomes for students who remain underrepresented within the higher educational landscape,” as stated in the official statement posted on Brescia’s Instagram account, discussions surrounding the merger have led to divisive gender-based arguments. Comments like “Good, an end to sexism by allowing equal treatment of both men and women and not discriminating against men” on social media platforms fail to acknowledge the underrepresented groups that the merger aims to support. Unfortunately, unbiased input

on this matter has been notably scarce. As we navigate this transitional period in gender-related issues, including terminology, legislation, and enforcement, the closure of Brescia University College remains a complex and unresolved issue. It underscores the ongoing debates about preserving women’s spaces in both physical and digital realms, emphasizing the intricacies of the situation. In a time when gender-related matters are undergoing profound shifts, there is no definitive answer regarding the closure of Brescia University College. On one hand, Canada aims for intersectional inclusivity, while on the other, the individual’s freedom of peaceful assembly and association is a fundamental right enshrined in the Canadian Charter, raising concerns about potential infringements. Ultimately, only time and experience will reveal the success or failure of closing Brescia University College in pursuit of inclusivity.

Jury Duty as an Honour, Duty or Task?
Michael Aquilino Chief of Operations
The Government of Ontario defines a jury as “a group of people randomly selected to make decisions at a trial in a court of law” (2023). Recently, I was posed with the thought-provoking question: “In your opinion, is it an honour, duty, or task to serve as a juror in the Canadian justice system?” After careful consideration, I believe that serving as a juror in the Canadian justice system is an honour. To defend my position, I will provide reasons as to why serving as a juror is not a duty, nor a task.
A duty is defined by the Legal Information Institute of Cornell Law School as, “An obligation, created by law or contract. A legal duty requires a person to conform their actions to a particular standard. And it also carries with it a recognition that the law will enforce this duty to the benefit of other individuals [in this instance, parties of a legal case] to whom this duty is owed” (2020). Through exploration of the “Jury Duty in Ontario” website, the above definition holds true in the province, at least with regards to those who have been formally selected for the jury panel.
Similarly, Canada is founded on the principles of a constitutional monarchy, where the nation is effectively governed by its constitution. The Constitution Act of 1982, containing the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, states, “Every individual is equal before and under the law” (15/1), and, with respect to jury service, “Any person charged with an offence has the right

Excitement has been steadily mounting over York University’s plans to construct
[...] to the benefit of trial by jury” (11f). Seeing that a legal duty is defined as an obligation set out by law, jury service can also be defined as such (11f). Yet, the “Jury Duty in Ontario” website provides a list of professions, including medical practitioners, police officers and lawyers, that are relieved of their eligibility for jury service.
A legal obligation, as jury service is, should be administered in accordance with Section 15, para. 1 of The Charter, in an equal and equitable manner — what is the law for one, must also be the law for another. The practice of exempting certain people from such a highly esteemed aspect of the Canadian cultural and legal atmosphere does not abide by these constitutionally-entrenched principles. In spite of these professions’ supposedly societally-indispensable character, I cannot rationally perceive jury service as a duty given these exceptions.
Anything defined as a Canadian duty should be true of all Canadian citizens, regardless of their position(s) in society. Exclusion of an individual from a duty based upon their profession is not just. Additionally, individuals who find themselves among the list of excluded professions have the right to the probable benefit of a jury, should they become involved in a criminal or civil trial. If they wish to receive one, they should also be eligible to sit on one.
Furthermore, jury service is not simply a task. Black’s Law Dictionary defines a task as, “The essential and smallest part of a job that is a unit of work differentiating from other parts of the project” (2023). While jury service can be viewed as a mere task affecting a greater judicial whole, Charles Davison’s asserts in his article: “We view juries as a fundamental protector of our liberties and freedoms — 12 ordinary, independent fellow citizens who can
protect us from the whims and arbitrariness of decisions made by officials who are beholden to the sovereign, a local figure, or other arms of government” (12). The critical function and importance of jury service in Canada is indisputable, It would be foolish to deem it a mere task.
In light of jury duty’s selective yet random nature, not everyone is granted the opportunity to participate (or is even eligible, for that matter). Thus, jury service in Canada is an honour — an activity that Canadians should be very pleased, proud, and grateful to partake in.

and inaugurate a new campus in Markham, strategically poised to accommodate the surging student population within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). After a protracted wait, this summer witnessed York’s reveal of a diverse array of undergraduate and graduate programs earmarked for its Markham campus. While this marks a significant stride forward, a conspicuous omission in the university’s portfolio remains: the absence of medical and dentistry schools.
York University presently boasts several prestigious specialty schools, including the Schulich School of Business
and Osgoode Law School, complemented by exceptional multilingual liberal arts and science programs. However, to truly solidify its standing as a comprehensive institution prepared to confront the challenges of the future, York must channel investments into establishing a medical and dentistry school. This approach mirrors the trajectory of other prominent provincial universities such as Western University, McMaster University, University of Ottawa, Queen’s University, and the University of Toronto, each bolstered by a triumvirate of specialty schools: law, business, and medicine.
Canada’s prolonged shortage of medical practitioners has plagued the nation, leaving approximately 6.5 million individuals without access to family doctors. The dearth of adequately trained medical professionals perpetuates a stark divide: the number of Canadians without primary care physicians escalates annually, leaving them without continuous health oversight. Alarming statistics underscore this concern, with Global News reporting that “half of Canadians do not have a primary care physician.” Furthermore, a study by the Angus Reid Institute reveals that 41% of

healthcare workers advocate for structural reforms to simplify the process for foreign-trained physicians to practice in Canada, while 35% support the expansion of university and college programs to address the country’s doctor shortage. In this pressing national context, York University must assume a pivotal role in propelling Canada forward.
Though York prides itself on well-established and reputable science programs, it is imperative that the institution explores the creation of its own medical and dentistry school. This endeavor would provide a broader spectrum of students with the opportunity to pursue these crucial fields of study and specialization within Ontario. Notably, Simon Fraser University, Toronto Metropolitan University, and the University of Prince Edward Island are poised to inaugurate brand new medical schools in the fall of 2026. Meanwhile, Premier Tim Houston of Nova Scotia has recently invested in Cape Breton University, collaborating with Dalhousie University to establish a new medical sciences campus in 2025. With three campuses now under its purview — Keele, Glendon, and Markham — York University should consider joining the ranks of institutions dedicated to nurturing the doctors and dental specialists of tomorrow.

¿Dónde
está mi gente?: Un appel à l’inclusivité
Amie Sosa Journaliste
bilingue
Drawing on Digital Due Diligence

In this digital age, knowing how to use virtual resources is vital. This is especially true for entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals. Within the past ten or so years, there has been an increase in the creative industry due to the popularization of content creation. Traditional artists, including painters and illustrators, who may not be well-versed in digital art, have found this transition to be quite challenging. The digitization of their work is fundamental to the modern artist, whether that be through precise photography or high-quality scanners. Working within the virtual medium — creating art from pixels and codes — is the most difficult method, but by far the most effective. This article covers a few tried and true applications or websites, catering to different artistic specializations, that help the new digital artist succeed in their ven-
ture into the virtual.
For illustrators, I have found Procreate to be the app of choice. It is a onetime purchase of $17.99 for an array of different brushes (including not only your traditional pens, pencils, markers, and paintbrushes, but also the more innovative textures of water, hair, snow, and others) and an unlimited number of canvases. What’s more is that there is an entire community of Procreators who will share custom brushes online for free. To work with Procreate, the artist must have a tablet and, ideally, a stylus. I highly recommend the iPad mini and Apple Pencil duo. Although the screen canvas has a learning curve, it is easily surpassed with a few YouTube tutorials and practice. Procreate has, in my experience, helped me overcome artistic limitations such as wasting expensive art supplies from poor handling or accidental misuse, occupying space in my small and characteristic Torontonian home, and being completely unportable. So if you are

ested in 3D animation, rendering, or game design. It is an application that is free to download on any computer, with some usage limitations. As it is quite demanding, a
better quality computer is ideal. However, I use the Microsoft Surface Go, a cute, dainty, pink laptop, and I can create digital renderings with minimal downtime during downloads. Although there is quite a large learning curve, one that packs a bigger punch than Procreate, there are tutorials online that help you start small. The trick is to first master the basics, only then bending the rules to work for you — as with anything, really. However, I find that ambitious individuals, including myself, often forget how to go about learning something new.
Intranetgirl is a famed UK-based YouTuber and student of the digital arts who makes intermediate tutorials on the program. I have found that as long as you have a play, pause, and rewind function on your device, her tutorials are helpful or, at the very least, inspiring.
For those of us who love image editing or design, PicMonkey is a beginner-friendly website to help you get started. I have used it for years for both school and personal projects. It can create digital work from scratch or even edit photography. For those who want a more advanced editing or creative experience, they also offer a subscription-based upgrade. Another website that my fellow students love is Canva. It also works as an alternative to PowerPoint or Prezi, for those of us left wanting more from plain and uninviting presentation pre-
sets. Canva is a great source of inspiration for printables such as posters, business cards, etc. It even offers a free AI service for collaborative icons and graphic designs. As with PicMonkey, there is a paid-for upgrade, but I find the free version to fulfil all my creative needs.
If what you are looking for is to code, you can do so on any computer. Mac has a built-in application called TextEdit where you can work with HTML and view how it would look on a website. Windows has downloadable apps such as Vim that perform the same functions. Both are fairly straightforward but you would need to have a working or beginner knowledge of markup language to work them. Not to worry, though, since tutorials are abundant both online and in the classroom. York sometimes offers courses on creating web content that are helpful for baby coders. The accessibility that the digital medium gives to artists is incredible. If you are on the fence because you need access to expensive electronics, York is home to many computer labs, and offers their students free use of Microsoft Office and specific Adobe software. I encourage you to get started! While digitizing creative work may seem daunting, it can also offer a sense of freedom when you have all the necessary tools readily available.
Préparation
3. Votre repas est prêt.
Great Glendon Grub

Maybe you got to campus early and have some time before class starts; maybe you’re on break in the middle of a lecture and only have a few minutes; or maybe you have a few hours between one class and
another. In any case, you have some time to grab a snack or have a meal. Lucky for you, Glendon has it all. Even luckier, you have a quick guide to your school’s fantastic foods and where to find them.
The Tim Hortons on campus is by far the most popular among the student body. However, unless you have a few long minutes to wait in line or have caught the baristas on their down time, Tim’s isn’t the most ideal mid-lecture stop. If you’re a fan of the standard Tim’s menu, I’m sorry to disappoint you further. However, they’ve got hot and iced coffee, signature pastries, and bagels. It’s also super easy to find, with it being smack-dab at the front of the main building.
The cafeteria has three major pop-ups or ateliers du chef where the food changes everyday, offering a large variety and a hearty meal. They’ve also got great grab-and-gos, including coolers with sushi, sandwiches, snacks, and hot plates with sweet and savoury pastries. A personal favourite of mine are the spinach and feta, and the leek and feta danishes. Like Tim’s, there is a long wait during the lunch

rush, but if you have some time between classes, it’s well worth the wait. They also have self-serve salad and coffee bars and a soda fountain, located in York Hall.
Not only are there vending machines scattered all around the campus with your favourite junk food, but there has been a recent addition to the roster: the Kitchenmate Kiosk, which is chef-crafted and locally-produced. With a menu that updates each week, and fresh, flash-frozen meals delivered each morning, this is Glendon’s hidden gem. There is never a queue because of its novelty. The meals take up to ten minutes to cook using the attached hot
plates, and the cold foods are grab-and-go friendly. Found at the La Station Stairwell, just beside the Breezeway, this gourmet kiosk is completely self-serve, which is a dream come true for us introverts.
Independent of what you’re craving, how much time you have, and where you are on campus, Glendon has got you covered. If you’re not satisfied with these options, you can always take the conveniently located 124 bus up to Lawrence Station and find yourself surrounded by mom-and-pop coffee shops, vegan eateries, and more. You’ll never go hungry at Glendon!
