Endlich ist sie da, unsere neue Erlebniswelt in Magazin-Form! Das freut uns besonders, weil wir monatelang daran gearbeitet und viel Freude und Herzblut investiert haben - was uns nicht schwer fiel, weil wir alle in Basel unsere Heimat haben. Unsere Seele ist mit dem Fluss, dem Dreiland und der hiesigen Kultur verbunden. Wir brauchen also nur festzuhalten, was wir täglich erleben. Und ja, es hilft natürlich auch, wenn das Redaktionsteam gerne gemeinsam durch die Stadt zieht ...

It’s here at last, our new world of experiences in magazine form! We are particularly happy it’s out, because we have been working on it for months now, with great pleasure and we’ve really put our hearts and souls into it. Which wasn’t difficult, because Basel is home to all of us. We are deeply connected with the river, the tri-border area and our local culture. So we only really needed to pin down what we experience every day. And of course, it is no disadvantage that the editorial team enjoys wandering around the city together ...

Dass uns auch in dieser Ausgabe von «LoveYourCity» – hoffentlich – ein schöner Mix mit spannenden Geschichten gelungen ist, hat damit zu tun, dass wir tatsächlich in den Restaurants einkehren, von denen wir schreiben. Dass wir den Sonnenuntergang am Rheinufer geniessen, im Fluss schwimmen, in den Bars versumpfen und uns die Ausstellungen der hiesigen Museen und Galerien anschauen. Unsere Kinder toben auf den Spielplätzen dieser Stadt, bemalen die Trottoirs mit Kreide. Wir lieben es, mit Familie und Freunden durch die Quartiere zu schlendern, in den Läden nach Trouvaillen zu stöbern, Theateraufführungen und Konzerte zu besuchen oder ins Kino zu gehen. Wir mögen die engen Gassen der Innenstadt genauso wie die weiten Parks, das weltstädtische Flair genauso wie den dörflichen Charakter. Und immer wieder entdecken wir bislang unbekannte Ecken, hören von erfrischend neuen, mutigen Ideen, lesen innovative Konzepte und freuen uns darüber, dass wir, obwohl wir unsere Stadt so gut kennen, immer wieder von ihr überrascht werden. Unsere Begeisterung für den Mix aus Weltstadt und Provinznest, für die einmaligen Beizen, die wunderbaren Shops und die beflügelnden Kulturangebote, für die Architektur und die Weltoffenheit der Leute möchten wir gerne mit dir teilen. Wir sind uns sicher, dass sich hier jeder wohl fühlen kann. Egal ob für ein paar Tage oder für viele Jahre. Basel ist eine Stadt voller Lebensqualität. Sie ist vielseitig und überaus kreativ. Hier erlebst du Schönes, Denkwürdiges, Witziges und Sonderbares – auf engstem Raum. Gerne begleiten wir dich ein wenig dabei. Und wünschen dir von Herzen Freude und unvergessliche Momente.

The fact that we have once again – we hope – managed to create a fine mix of exciting stories in this latest edition of “LoveYourCity”, has to do with the fact that we actually stop for a bite to eat in the restaurants we write about; that we soak up the sunsets from the banks of the Rhine; swim in the river; stay out late drinking in the bars and visit the exhibitions in the local museums and galleries. Our children romp around in the playgrounds dotted around the city; they paint its pavements with coloured chalks. We love strolling around the different neighbourhoods with our families and friends, browsing through the shops for amazing finds, going to the theatre and concerts and the cinema. We are very fond of the city centre and its narrow alleyways as we are of the spacious parks, the cosmopolitan flair and the villagey feel. Over and over again, we discover hidden corners we have never come across before; hear about refreshing, brave new ideas; read about innovative schemes and enjoy the fact that although we know our city so well, it still holds surprises in store for us. We want to share our delight in this mixture of cosmopolitan city and sleepy backwater, in its unique restaurants, wonderful shops and inspiring range of cultural events, its architecture and the open-minded attitude of the people who live here. And we are convinced that everyone can feel at home here; whether for just a few days or for many years. Basel is a city bursting with quality of life. It is multifaceted and exceedingly creative. ZIEMLICH DAS WICHTIGSTE Ihre Gerichte sind farblich sortiert und werden ausschliesslich auf runden Tellern serviert. Könnte neurotisch wirken, doch Tanja Grandits ist alles andere als das. Die beste Köchin der Schweiz ist absolut unverkrampft und eins mit sich und der Welt. Ihr Geheimnis? Sie achtet nicht nur sehr gut auf ihre Mitmenschen, sondern allen voran auf sich selber. 6 Wenn immer ich auf meinem Laptop «Tanja Grandits» eingebe, macht mein automatisches Korrekturprogramm daraus «Tanja Grandios». Und ich tippe ihren Namen oft, bevor ich sie in ihrem Restaurant, dem legendären Stucki, besuche. Je mehr ich im Vorfeld über sie lese, desto schwieriger erscheint es mir, etwas über sie zu schreiben. Sie hat nämlich bereits alle Fragen beantwortet. Unzählige Male. Dass sich am Tag meines Besuchs just dann der Himmel leert, als ich vor dem Restaurant Stucki stehe, macht alles nicht einfacher. Wie ein begossener Pudel sitze ich an einem der Tische im Restaurant und lasse mir ein warmes Ingwer-Getränk servieren. Es ist mein erster Besuch im Stucki und überhaupt in einem Gourmet-Restaurant. Was ich bislang von der Welt der Spitzengastronomie weiss: Die Luft ist dünn so hoch oben. Gäste und Kritiker erwarten tägliche Perfektion, Verantwortung und Erfolgsdruck sind enorm; diverse Köche sind daran bereits zerbrochen. Frau Grandits muss ziemlich gestresst sein, zumal das vergangene Jahr kein leichtes war, denke ich mir. Und erwarte eine erschöpfte Frau. Ich liege falsch. Entspannt lächelnd schwebt die zierliche Tanja Grandits in den Raum. Keinerlei Anzeichen von Hektik oder Unruhe. Wüsste ich nicht, dass sie Koch des Jahres ist, dotiert mit 19 Punkten und zwei Sternen, dass sie sieben Kochbücher geschrieben hat, 40 Angestellte führt und einen Delikatessenshop betreibt – ich würde schwören, sie ist Atemtherapeutin. Oder Yogalehrerin. «Das vergangene Ausnahmejahr hat mit dazu beigetragen, dass ich noch nie so ausgeruht war wie jetzt», strahlt sie in sympathischem Schwäbisch. Zwar habe sie sehr viel

gearbeitet, aber auf ganz andere Art und Weise. Sie schrieb Rezepte, arbeitete an ihrem neusten Kochbuch und stand im Laden, um ihre Gerichte als Take Away zu verkaufen. Abends hatte sie frei. «Nach 20 Jahren in der Gastronomie war das wie ein anderes Leben. Unglaublich schön!» Wenn Tanja Grandits erzählt, funkeln ihre Augen und sie ist maximal fokussiert. Sie scheint vollkommen im Reinen zu sein mit sich und der Welt. Das Bild des cholerischen Kochs in meinem Kopf – es rinnt mir mit dem letzten Regentropfen den Nacken herunter. Ich schmunzle, als sie mir erzählt, dass sie jeden Morgen gleich nach dem Zähneputzen eine Yoga-Einheit absolviert. Und staune über ihre ausgiebigen Morgen-Rituale: «Ich mache Kerzen an, trinke meinen Matcha-Tee und umgebe mich mit tollen Düften, höre leise Musik, mache mir eine Gesichtsmaske und fühle mich dann für den Tag gestärkt. Nachdem ich für mich geguckt hab, kann ich den ganzen Tag für alle anderen gucken», lächelt sie. Zu den anderen gehört zum Beispiel ihr Team. Sie fühlt sich nämlich nicht nur verantwortlich dafür, dass sie ihren Angestellten den Lohn zahlen kann, sondern auch dafür, dass es ihnen gut geht. «Ich möchte als Chef für meine Mitarbeitenden da sein, damit sie sich wohl fühlen und sich weiterentwickeln können. Man verbringt so viel Zeit bei der Arbeit, da muss es doch schön sein und Spass machen. Das Essen schmeckt ja auch besser, wenn die Atmosphäre gut ist.» Offensichtlich arbeitet Tanja Grandits anders als andere Köche. Weniger hierarchisch, mehr familiär. Das merkt man auch daran, dass ihr Personal sie teilweise jahrelang begleitet. Mit ihrem Sou-Chef arbeitet sie seit 14 Jahren und noch immer grinst sie, wenn sie von ihm erzählt.

Ich bin eigentlich am liebsten bei mir selber.

«Er ist ein Unikum, trägt immer rosa Schürzen, eine rosa Kochjacke und mag es, sich in Schränken zu verstecken und dann zum Schrecken des Teams unverhofft rauszuspringen.» Zudem freut sie sich über zwei musikalische Abwäscher aus Tahiti: «Beide spielen Ukulele – und das unglaublich gut! Immer wenn jemand Geburtstag hat, spielen sie ein Ständeli und singen dazu – das ist so schön, eine wahnsinnige Bereicherung!» Immer wieder betont sie ihre Dankbarkeit. Für die Zeit mit ihrer 16-jährigen Tochter Emma zum Beispiel. Oder dafür, dass sie kürzlich eine tolle Klavierlehrerin gefunden hat und nun bereits ein wenig «Amélie» spielen kann. Sie freut sich darüber, dass sie jeden Tag Dinge tun darf, die ihr Spass machen und Energie geben. Was sie denn wütend mache, will ich von ihr wissen. «Dummheit und Ignoranz», gibt sie zu. Und ergänzt sogleich: «Ich bin aber niemandem lange böse. Wut ist doch ein Gefühl, das einem ausbremst und hemmt, neue Sachen zu machen. Ein Gefühl, das einem Energie raubt. Ich bin eigentlich am liebsten bei mir selber.» Und wenn’s doch einmal nicht so rund läuft, hat sie einen Trick: «Dann geh ich kurz hoch, stell mich unter die Dusche und fang den Tag nochmal neu an. Das funktioniert!» Auch das Älterwerden hilft ihr, bewusst im Hier und Jetzt zu leben. «Diese Gelassenheit, die das Alter mit sich bringt, geniesse ich wahnsinnig. In den letzten Jahren hat sich eine unglaubliche Grundzufriedenheit eingestellt. Da wo ich jetzt bin, ist es fantastisch. Ich weiss; was ich bis jetzt getan habe, war richtig, das ist meine Aufgabe im Leben.» Was nicht heisst, dass sie sich fortan ausruhen wird. Zu gross ist der Tatendrang, zu verlockend sind die Träume. Zum Beispiel hätte sie irgendwann gerne ein kleines Hotel, in dem sie alles zusammenbringen kann, was sie in ihrem Leben je gelernt und erfahren hat. Es müsste an einem schönen Ort sein, toll eingerichtet und natürlich würde es immer wahnsinnig gut riechen. «Ich stell mir vor, ich sitze dann am Küchentisch, trinke Champagner und schreib Rezepte. Und all die Leute, die ich je kennengelernt habe, können mich besuchen, gut essen und das Leben geniessen. Denn Genuss ist so ziemlich das Wichtigste.» Der Regen hat etwas nachgelassen, als ich mich nach unserem Gespräch von Tanja Grandits verabschiede. Sie entschwindet so leise, wie sie gekommen ist – als wäre sie eine spirituelle Erscheinung gewesen. Entspannt lächelnd schwebe ich die Treppen des Restaurant Stucki hinunter. Vielleicht hat mein automatisches Korrekturprogramm Recht, wenn es aus «Grandits» jeweils «Grandios» macht.

Frau Grandits, was könnten Sie immer und zu jeder Tageszeit essen? Hummus mit Rüebli. Das ist quasi unser täglicher Apéro. Am liebsten mit Zitrone und extrem viel Tahini. Es geht fast nicht einfacher, macht mich aber total glücklich. Gibt es noch Freunde, die sich getrauen, Sie zu bekochen? Ja, tatsächlich! Ich schätze es unglaublich, wenn jemand für mich kocht. Das kann auch ein einfaches Raclette sein, da habe ich keine Ansprüche. Nur Würste mag ich nicht. Was schätzen Sie an Basel? Dass die Stadt so weltoffen und international ist, so voller Kunst und Leben. Hier hat man alle Möglichkeiten einer Stadt, ist aber sofort im Grünen. Ich mag die Nähe zu Deutschland und Frankreich und spaziere wahnsinnig gerne am Rhein. Allerdings würde ich nie im Fluss schwimmen – das ist nicht meins.

Was bedeutet Ihnen Mode? Ich liebe Mode! Wichtig sind mir schöne Materialien wie Leinen, Flanell oder hochwertige Baumwolle. Die geben mir ein gutes Gefühl auf der Haut. Sehr gerne trage ich Einteiler. Overalls und Latzhosen. Meine Lieblingslatzhose habe ich in vier verschiedenen Farben. Und von meinen weissen Lieblingsturnschuhen habe ich mir kürzlich noch einmal zwei identische Paare gekauft. Das sind einfach die besten. 8

TANJA GRANDITS Die aus dem Schwäbischen stammende Tanja Grandits begann ihre Kochlehre mit 23 Jahren, nachdem sie Abitur gemacht, zwei Semester Chemie studiert und ein Jahr als Au-Pair in den USA gearbeitet hatte. Vor 20 Jahren eröffnete sie ihr erstes Restaurant im Thurgau, seit 2008 ist sie Chefin des legendären GourmetRestaurants Stucki auf dem Bruderholz. Ihr Markenzeichen: Die monochrome Küche. Die heute 51-Jährige ist überzeugt, dass die Sinne den Geschmack besser erfassen können, wenn die Gerichte in einer Farbe gehalten und die Augen nicht abgelenkt werden. Die beste Köchin der Schweiz wurde 2020 von GaultMillau mit der Höchstnote 19 und als «Koch des Jahres» ausgezeichnet und hat zwei Sterne im Guide Michelin. Sie wohnt mit ihrer 16-jährigen Tochter Emma über dem Restaurant, hat sieben Kochbücher veröffentlicht und sammelt bereits neue Rezepte für ein weiteres Buch, das 2022 erscheinen soll.

Wer gibt Ihnen die besten Ratschläge? Meine Freundin Elisa. Sie ist 84 Jahre alt und sehr weise. Wenn ich bei irgendwas nicht weiterweiss, frage ich sie, dann kommt’s gut. Von ihr habe ich auch meinen Postkarten-Fimmel. Ich schreibe ja sehr, sehr gerne Postkarten, die ich selber gestalte mit Stempeln und Stickern. Elisa macht das schon ihr Leben lang. Sie schreibt auch an sich selber. Das mache ich unterdessen auch ab und an. Es ist sehr lustig, im Briefkasten eine Postkarte von sich selber zu finden.

Miss Grandits, what could you always eat, no matter what the time of day? Hummus with carrots. That is basically our appetiser every day. I like it best with plenty of lemon and tons of tahini. It couldn’t be simpler, but it makes me completely happy. Do you have any friends who still dare to cook for you? Yes indeed! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it when someone else cooks for me. It can be a simple raclette, I’m not at all fussy. The only thing I don’t like are sausages. What do you like about Basel? I like the fact that this city is so cosmopolitan and international, so full of art and life. You have everything a city has to offer you here, but you can be out in the countryside in 5 minutes. I like being so close to Germany and France and I love walking along the Rhine. Mind you, I would never go swimming in the river, that is definitely not my thing. How do you feel about fashion? I love fashion! I find it very important that the materials are lovely - like linen, flannel and top-quality cotton. They feel good against my skin. And I really like wearing overalls and dungarees. I have my favourite dungarees in four different colours. And I recently bought another two identical pairs of my favourite white trainers. They are simply the best. Who gives you the best advice? My friend Elisa. She is 84 years old and very wise. When I am at a loss about something, I ask her and then it all works out well. I also got my obsession with postcards from her. I really love writing postcards that I create myself with rubberstamps and stickers. Elisa has been doing that her whole life long. She writes to herself too. And I have started doing that occasionally as well. It is very amusing to find a postcard you’ve written to yourself in the letterbox.

TANJA GRANDITS Who comes from south-west Germany, began her cooking apprenticeship at the age of 23, after graduating from high school, studying chemistry for two semesters and working as an au-pair in the USA. 20 years ago, she opened her first restaurant in Thurgau, and she has been chef at the legendary gourmet restaurant Stucki on Basel’s Bruderholz since 2008. Her trademark: monochrome cuisine. Grandits, who is now 51 years old, is convinced that our senses can take in tastes better when the dishes are one colour and our eyes are not distracted. Switzerland’s best female chef was awarded Gault Millau’s highest score of 19 points and chosen as “chef of the year” in 2020 and she has two stars in the Guide Michelin. She lives above the restaurant with her 16-year-old daughter Emma, has published seven cookery books and is already collecting new recipes for another book that she is planning to publish in 2022.

RESTAURANT STUCKI PL E A S U R E I S R E AL LY T H E MOST IMPORTANT THING Her dishes are arranged according to colour and are only served on round plates. That may sound a touch neurotic, but Tanja Grandits is anything but. Switzerland’s top female chef is in fact very relaxed and at ease with herself and the world. Her secret? She takes very good care of her fellow human beings, but above all of herself. Whenever I type “Tanja Grandits” into my computer, the autocorrect program always transforms her name into “Tanja Grandiose”. And I type her name in a lot - before I finally visit her restaurant, the legendary Stucki. The more I read about her in advance, the more difficult I find it to write about her. Because she has already answered every question you can possibly think of, countless times. The fact that there is a huge cloudburst on the day that I am meeting her, just when I am standing in front of the Restaurant Stucki, doesn’t make things any easier. I sit at one of the restaurant tables looking like a drowned rat and am served a warm ginger drink. It’s my first ever visit to the Stucki and in fact to any gourmet restaurant at all. All I know so far about the world of high-end gastronomy is: the air is thin up there. Guests and critics expect perfection daily, the responsibilities and pressure to succeed are immense; and any number of chefs have already suffered breakdowns because of it. Ms. Grandits must be pretty stressed herself, I think to myself, after all, this past year has not been an easy one. And I expect to encounter an exhausted woman. I am completely wrong. The slenderly built Tanja Grandits breezes into the room, relaxed and smiling. Not a trace of flurry or agitation. If I hadn’t known that she is chef of the year, with 19 Gault Millau points and two Michelin stars, that she has written seven cookbooks, has a staff of forty and runs her own delicatessen – I would have sworn she was a breath therapist. Or a yoga teacher. “This extraordinary last year has contributed to the fact that I have never been as well-rested as I am now”, she pronounces in her pleasant, Southern German accent and beams. She did work a lot, but in a completely different way. She wrote recipes, worked on her latest cookbook and served in her shop, selling her dishes as take-aways. In the evenings she was free. “After 20 years in gastronomy it was a completely different life. Incredibly lovely!” When Tanja Grandits talks her eyes sparkle and she is completely focussed. She seems to be utterly at peace with herself and the world. The image I had in my head of choleric chefs – rolls away down the back of my neck - with the last of the raindrops. I chuckle to myself when she tells me how she completes a yoga routine every morning, right after brushing her teeth. And I am awed by her extensive morning ritual: “I light candles, drink my matcha tea and immerse myself in lovely scents, listen to soft music, make myself a face mask and feel invigorated enough to face the day. Once I have taken care of myself, I can spend the rest of the day taking care of everyone”, she laughs.

By everyone else she means, for example, her team. She doesn’t just feel responsible for being able to pay her employees their salaries, but also for ensuring that they are well. “As a chef, I want to be there for my employees so that they feel at ease and have the chance to progress. People spend so much time at work it should really be pleasant and enjoyable. And food tastes better when there is a good atmosphere.” It is obvious that Tanja Grandits works differently to other chefs. Less hierarchical, more of a family atmosphere. You can also tell this by the fact that some of her staff have been with her for years. She has been working with her sous-chef for 14 years and she still has to grin when she talks about him. “He is an absolute original; he always wears pink aprons and a pink chef’s jacket and he likes to hide in cupboards and jump out unexpectedly to give the team a terrible shock.” She is also delighted with her two musical dishwashers from Tahiti: “They both play the ukulele – incredibly well! Whenever someone has a birthday, they play a tune and sing along to it – it is so lovely, an incredible treat!” She often emphasises how grateful she is. For example, for the time with her 16-year-old daughter Emma. Or for the fact that she recently found a great piano teacher and can already play a little bit of “Amélie”. She is happy that she gets to do things she enjoys every day and which fill her with energy. What makes her angry then, I want to know? “Stupidity and ignorance”, she admits. But then immediately adds: “But I am never cross with someone for very long. Anger is a feeling that slows you down and blocks you from doing new things. An emotion that robs you of energy. I actually most enjoy being be at home with myself.” And if sometimes things aren’t going so well, she has a special trick: “Then I go upstairs quickly, take a shower and start the day afresh. That works!” Getting older also helps her to live very consciously in the here and now. “I really enjoy this composure that comes with age so much. Over the last few years an incredible underlying sense of contentment has settled within me. Where I am at the moment is fantastic. I know that what I have done so far is right, it is my role in life.” But this doesn’t mean she is about to sit back and relax from now on. Her drive is too great, her dreams too enticing. For example, one day she would like to have a small hotel where she could bring everything she has learned and experienced in life together, under one roof. It would have to be in a beautiful place, handsomely furnished and of course it would always smell incredibly good. “I imagine myself then, sitting at the kitchen table, drinking champagne and writing recipes. And all the people I have met over the years, could visit me and eat well and enjoy life. Pleasure is really the most important thing.” The rain has lightened a little as I take my leave of Tanja Grandits a the end of our interview. She disappears as soundlessly as she arrives – as though she were an apparition from the spirit world. Relaxed and smiling I float down the steps of the Stücki restaurant myself. Perhaps my autocorrect program is right when it keeps turning “Grandits” into “Grandiose”.

Wer an Autohändler denkt, hat meist Bilder von riesigen Autohäusern im Kopf, situiert am Rande der Stadt, umgeben von grossen Möbelhäusern und mit direktem Anschluss an die Autobahn. Anders die offizielle Ferrari und Ferrari Classiche Vertretung im Basler Gellert-Quartier. Inmitten der Stadt befindet sich hier eine zeitgemässe 360 Grad-Welt, quasi ein Rundum-Erlebnis, das sinnbildlich für die Marke steht, die dieser Ort verkörpert: Ferrari. Das ist diese unverkennbare rote Farbe, das ist Rennsport, das ist Eleganz, italienisches Flair, exklusiver Lifestyle. 360 Grad gelebte Begeisterung Ein Highlight ist die jährlich organisierte Giro Classiche, an welcher Kunden auf eine Rundfahrt durch die Region eingeladen werden. Die extra für den Event frisch gewaschenen und herausgeputzten Ferrari Classiche-Modelle gleiten zusammen über die Strassen Basels und der Region, begleitet von Fotografen und einem Videoteam – und zahlreichen neugierigen und begeisterten Blicken an der Wegstrecke. Was zählt, ist das gemeinsame Erlebnis und das Gefühl, diese Leidenschaft unter Gleichgesinnten auszuleben, diese Begeisterung für ein Auto, welches für Ästhetik, Handwerkskunst und die RennsportTradition steht. Ob nun Giro Classiche oder ein gediegenes Dinner im Restaurant Cheval Blanc - zum Beispiel zur Lancierung eines neuen Ferraris - die Niki Hasler AG lebt die exklusive Welt von Ferrari und versucht diese Passion stets weiterzugeben. Der Showroom setzt dabei weltweit neue Massstäbe, was die Präsentation, Inszenierung und Würdigung seltener, älterer Ferrari-Modelle angeht. Mit beeindruckender Liebe zum Detail ist ein Ort entstanden, der viel mehr ist, als es der Begriff «Showroom» vermuten lässt. Es ist sozusagen ein Museum, das die schönsten, wertvollsten und seltensten Ferrari Classiche-Modelle grossartig in Szene setzt. Auch hier lautet das oberste Gebot: Nur original ist authentisch. Auf jedem Quadratmeter des neuen Classiche Showrooms wird Authentizität gelebt, zum Beispiel durch die dekorativen, gelben Keramikplatten aus Modena, welche Enzo Ferrari in seinem Büro hinter sich an der Wand hängen hatte. Ein Ausdruck dieser gelebten Authentizität stellt aber vor allem auch die grosse Farbmusterwand dar, welche nahezu alle historischen Ferrari-Farben abbildet. Was sich einfach anhört, ist in Wahrheit das Resultat von Niki Haslers unbändiger Passion und mühevoller Recherche sowie der gewaltigen Handarbeit eines ebenso leidenschaftlichen Lackierers in Italien. Die Ruhe und freie Zeit während der Pandemie hat dieser dazu genutzt, sich diesem verrückten Auftrag zu widmen: Er recherchierte die Rezeptur der rund 240 historischen Farben und lackierte danach mit jeder Farbe eine kleine Metall-Platte. Ein beeindruckendes Werk, welches nun den neuen Ferrari Classiche Showroom schmückt. Wer diesen Tempel der gelebten Begeisterung, diesen roten Erlebnis-Ort in Basel mit eigenen Augen zu sehen bekommt, möchte automatisch Teil dieser Welt sein. Es ist die Demonstration einer ansteckenden Freude am Detail und einer unvergänglichen Passion für Ferrari.

Ein Stück Ferrari-Geschichte in Basel Was den Museums-Charakter des Showrooms letztlich ausmacht, sind die zahlreichen wertvollen Sammlerstücke aus der bewegenden Geschichte von Ferrari. Da sind originale Formel 1-Motoren ausgestellt, da hängen originale Karosserie-Teile an der Wand, welche in mühsamer Handarbeit aus Metall und mit purer Muskelkraft in Form geschlagen wurden. Und da verbirgt sich ein Archiv an Memorabilien mit technischen Dokumentationen vom ersten bis zum neusten vollständigen Ferrari-Modell oder von Enzo Ferrari höchstpersönlich unterschriebenen Dokumenten. For the last year and a half, the building next to the Ferrari dealership has been restored and returned pretty much to its original appearance in 1940. This recently opened Classiche Showroom thus complements the pale concrete monolith of the main building, where the modern models are housed. The showroom sets a new global standard in terms of presentation, mise-en-scène and appreciation of rare, older Ferrari models. With an impressive attention to detail, a place has been created that is far more that the term “showroom” could possibly encompass. A piece of Ferrari history in Basel What ultimately turns the showroom into a kind of museum, are the numerous and precious collector’s items representing defining moments in Ferrari’s eventful history. There are original Formula 1 engines on display here, original chassis components hanging on the wall, metal parts that were painstakingly hammered into shape by hand and with nothing but muscle power. Tucked away here is also an archive of memorabilia with technical documentation from the earliest through to the most recent complete Ferrari models, as well as documents signed by Enzo Ferrari himself. It is a truly unique collection of historical rarities of mind-blowing value.

Authenticity fills every square metre of the new Classiche showroom, for example in the decorative yellow ceramic plates from Modena, which Enzo Ferrari once had hanging on the wall behind him in his office. One of the strongest expressions of this complete authenticity is the huge wall of colour samples which displays almost every colour used in Ferrari’s history. What sounds quite simple, is in fact the result of Niki Hasler’s unbridled passion and painstaking research and the extraordinary manual labour of an equally passionate varnisher in Italy. He took advantage of the peace and free time provided by the pandemic to dedicate himself to this crazy assignment: he had to research the composition of around 240 historic colours then laboriously coat small individual metal plates with them. An impressive piece which now hangs in the new Ferrari Classiche showroom. Anyone who sees this temple to all-consuming enthusiasm and real-life experience in Ferrari red in Basel with their own eyes, will automatically want to be a part of this world. It is a revelation of an infectious delight in detail and an eternal passion for Ferrari.

MIT GESCHICHTE Bären, Ochsen, Krone? Nicht in Basel. Hier heissen die Traditionsbeizen Schnabel, Gifthüttli oder Löwenzorn. Und obwohl es sie zum Teil seit über 200 Jahren gibt, sind sie bis heute wunderbare Adressen, um regional, frisch und währschaft gut zu essen.

SAFRAN ZUNFT Gerbergasse 11 – safran-zunft.ch Seit dem Mittelalter ist die Zunft zu Safran eine der vier Herrenzünfte unter den zwanzig Basler Zünften. Bis heute engagieren sich rund 320 Zunftbrüder in der «Saffere». Da die Zunft ursprünglich von den Basler Gewürzhändlern gegründet wurde, spielen die Gewürze in der Küche des Restaurants eine grosse Rolle. Hier kannst du modern, frisch und saisonal essen und dabei die geschichtsträchtigen Räumlichkeiten bewundern. 18 The Saffron Guild has been one of the four senior (gentlemen’s) guilds of the total of twenty guilds in Basel, since the Middle Ages. The “Saffere” still has around 320 active guild brethren to this day. Because the guild was originally founded by Basel’s spice merchants, herbs and spices still play a major role in the cuisine of this restaurant. You can enjoy modern, fresh seasonal food here while admiring the rooms, so steeped in history.

LÖWENZORN Gemsberg 2/4 – loewenzorn-basel.ch Von Weisswürsten über Shepherd’s Pie bis Chickencurry – im Löwenzorn kann man herrlich essen und dies bei schönem Wetter in einem ganz zauberhaften Innenhof. Seit 1874 werden hier Gäste bewirtet, die Geschichte des Hauses geht jedoch bis ins 13. Jahrhundert zurück. Heute beherbergt der Löwenzorn neben Fasnächtlern und Studentenverbindungen auch die Zunft zu Gerbern und die Schneiderzunft. Veal sausages, shepherd’s pie or chicken curry – you can eat superb food at the Löwenzorn and if the weather is fine, sit out in the truly enchanting inner courtyard. Guests have been feasted here since 1874, but the building’s history dates back to the 13th century. Nowadays the Löwenzorn is home not just to Fastnächtler (active participants in Basel’s carnival) and student fraternities, but also to the Tanners’ Guild and the Tailors’ Guild.

SCHÜTZENHAUS Schützenmattstrasse 56 – schuetzenhaus-basel.ch Seit 1845 wirst du in diesem bedeutenden Basler Baudenkmal der Renaissance kulinarisch verwöhnt. Damals wurde auf dem Schiessplatz vor dem Haus noch exerziert. Heute kannst du dein Chateaubriand, deine Seezunge oder deine Jenzer Goldwurst zum Glück entspannt und in Ruhe geniessen, denn die «Gesellschaft der Feuerschützen» übt anderswo … People have been treated to culinary delights in this notable Renaissance building, an architectural monument in Basel, since 1845. At the time, the firing range in front of the building was still used for practice. But these days you can enjoy your Chateaubriand, Dover sole or specialty Jenzer sausages in a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. The “Company of riflemen” now practice their marksmanship elsewhere …

HASENBURG Schneidergasse 20 – hasenburg.swiss Der Familienbetrieb gehört mit dem Gifthüttli und dem ehemaligen Grünen Heinrich zum «Bermuda Dreieck». Hier tranken die Marktfahrer aus der Region früher gerne einen über den Durst und schaukelten danach wie die Schiffe im Atlantik. Heute wird in der «Baiz mit Herz» frisch und regional gekocht. Der Lachs ist eigenhändig geräuchert, das Glacé selbstgemacht. Dazu gibt’s Gastfreundschaft und Gemütlichkeit umsonst. This family-run establishment, together with the Gifthüttli and the former Grünen Heinrich, is part of the “Bermuda Triangle”. In times past, the market traders who came in from the surrounding areas, used to like to drink one too many here and then sway off afterwards like ships buffeted by the Atlantic winds. These days, fresh regional food is prepared in this “restaurant from the heart”. They smoke the salmon themselves; the ice cream is homemade. And the hospitality and convivial atmosphere are free of charge.

GIFTHÜTTLI Schneidergasse 11 – gifthuettli.ch Vor über 100 Jahren wagte es der Wirt des Gasthauses «zum Ritter St. Georg» nebst Wein auch Bier auszuschenken. Ein Affront! Das Gerede war gross und in der Zeitung stand geschrieben: «Bier, das nicht direkt beim Bierbrauer getrunken wird, ist Gift.» Der Wirt taufte sein Restaurant kurzerhand um. Heute kannst du hier zum Beispiel ein heerlig saftiges Cordon Bleu geniessen. Over a century ago, the landlord of the “St. George the Knight” inn dared to start serving beer as well as wine. A scandal! There was a lot of gossip and in the newspaper the commentary was: “Beer not drunk directly at the brewer’s is poison.” So, with no further ado the landlord rechristened his inn as the Poison Shack. These days you can enjoy a wonderfully juicy cordon bleu here, for example.

RESTAURATION ZUR HARMONIE Petersgraben 71 – harmoniebasel.ch Hier solltest du vorgängig reservieren, denn die Harmonie ist beliebt. Das hängt wohl weniger damit zusammen, dass das Jugendstil-Interieur bis heute gehegt und gepflegt wird, sondern damit, dass man dich hier einfach sehr liebevoll bekocht und herzlich bedient. Falls du dich nicht für ein Gericht entscheiden kannst, hier unser Tipp: Nimm den Wurstsalat! You should reserve a table if you want to eat here because the “Harmony” restaurant is very popular. This is not just because the original Art Nouveau interior is still treasured and preserved, but even more so, because the meals you are served are prepared with such tender care and served with such friendliness. If you can’t decide which dish to order, out tip is: try the sausage salad!

SCHNABEL Trillengässlein 2 – restaurant-schnabel.ch Hier ist das ganze Jahr über e weeneli Fasnacht: Ganze 12 Cliquen haben den Schnabel zur Stammbeiz. Der Name geht vermutlich auf einen Wirt eines früheren Jahrhunderts zurück, der entweder eine grosse Nase oder ein loses Mundwerk hatte. Kulinarisch findest du hier zum Beispiel Basler Spezialitäten. Besonders beliebt sind die falschen Schnecken. There is a touch of Basel’s carnival to this place the whole year through: the Schnabel is the regular haunt of no less than 12 Fasnacht cliques who gather here. The restaurant’s name probably came from an innkeeper in centuries past who was blessed either with a large nose or a loose tongue. On the culinary side, you can eat Basel specialities here. The fake snails, “Falsche Schnägge” in dialect, are especially popular.

SCHLÜSSELZUNFT Freie Strasse 25 – schluesselzunft.ch In diesem denkmalgeschützten Gebäude haben sich früher die in Basel ansässigen Grosskaufleute getroffen. Heute kannst du dich hier in der geschichtsträchtigen Zunftstube mit historischem Kachelofen, im Bistro mit Blick durch das Glasdach oder auf der Terrasse mitten in der Fussgängerzone liebevoll umsorgen und kulinarisch verwöhnen lassen. Basel’s wealthiest merchants used to meet in this listed building. These days, you can indulge yourself with culinary delights and careful service in the guild room, steeped in history with its ancient tiled stove; in the bistro, with a view through the glass roof or on the terrace in the middle of the pedestrian zone.

STADTKELLER Marktgasse 11 – stadtkeller-basel.ch Unkompliziert, lebhaft und gemütlich – das ist der Stadtkeller. Hier haben schon sämtliche Baslerinnen und Basler und zudem VIPs aus aller Welt ihre Bierhumpen gehoben, ein Beefsteak Tatar gegessen und die entspannte Stimmung genossen. In der Vorweihnachtszeit bekommst du zudem eine Showeinlage der besonderen Art geboten. Easy-going, lively and comfortable – that’s the Stadtkeller. Practically every inhabitant of Basel as well as VIPs from all over the world have raised their tankards here, eaten a beefsteak Tatar und and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere. Eddie Hara: Noch nie gehört? Wir behaupten jetzt einfach mal: falsch. Denn bestimmt ist dir die bunte Glasfront vom früheren Terror Samba schon mal aufgefallen. Genau: Eddie’s Werk. Wir haben den 63-Jährigen zum Interview getroffen. Text: Valérie Ziegler Bilder: Ben Koechlin

Hawaii-Shirt am Leib und runde Corbusier-Brille auf der Nase: Mit seinen gepiercten Ohren wirkt er wie ein ewig junger Paradiesvogel. Seine ruhige Art und seine Weisheit hingegen haben nicht nur eine Zen-artige Auswirkung, sondern machen sie auch deutlich, dass Eddie Hara in seinen 63 Jahren schon einiges erlebt hat. Vielleicht ist es gerade diese Mischung, die dazu führt, dass der Künstler mit seinem Schaffen insbesondere auch die junge Generation anspricht. Als wir den Basler, der ursprünglich aus Indonesien stammt, zum Interview treffen, kommt er gerade von einem grossen Job: «Ich bin erleichtert, denn soeben habe ich das Mural für den CBD-Shop ADAMS in der Steinenvorstadt zu Ende gebracht.» Womit Eddie während den vergangenen Covid-Monaten sonst noch beschäftigt war und was er gerne aus Indonesien nach Basel holen würde? Lese selbst!

Ich liebe es, wenn Mütter ihren Kindern eine Geschichte über meine Arbeit erzählen.

Eddie, auch du hast kein einfaches Jahr hinter dir: Wie hast du das 2020 überstanden? Das letzte Jahr war wirklich nicht leicht. Ich selbst bin auch an Covid erkrankt. Glücklicherweise nicht allzu schlimm. Einmal mehr habe ich realisiert, wie dankbar ich bin für meine Familie. Wir haben uns gestärkt, ohne uns gegenseitig zu frustrieren. Finanziell war ich durch meine Ersparnisse zum Glück gut abgesichert. Als Künstler bist du es zudem gewohnt, viel alleine zu sein. Den Austausch mit anderen Menschen vermisse ich allerdings noch immer sehr. Ich bin deshalb extrem erleichtert, dass langsam wieder etwas Normalität einkehrt. Es ist kein Geheimnis, dass du dich gerne vom Frust dieser Welt inspirieren lässt. Hat dich diese Krisensituation vielleicht sogar künstlerisch bereichert? Die Einsamkeit ist auf jeden Fall ein Thema, dem ich mich vermehrt gewidmet habe. Diesbezüglich kann man also schon von einer gewissen Bereicherung sprechen. Meine Wut richtet sich grundsätzlich immer an die Gesellschaft und die Art, wie diese teilweise mit unserer Welt umgeht. Entsprechend war ich dankbar für diesen plötzlichen Stopp; wir alle wurden dazu aufgefordert, endlich mal innezuhalten. Auf einmal war der Himmel klar und schienen die Vögel lauter zu zwitschern. Ausserdem wurde auch mir persönlich bewusst, wie viele Dinge ich eigentlich gar nicht brauche. Der Mensch ist es gewohnt, immer das zu bekommen, was er gerade benötigt. Heute hingegen ist nicht mehr alles sofort verfügbar; was deutlich macht, dass wir Menschen eigentlich geduldiger sind, als bisher angenommen.

Was hat dir in dieser Zeit am meisten gefehlt? Die Art-Crowd. Und damit meine ich jetzt nicht nur die Partys. Für mich ist der Austausch mit Künstlern aus der ganzen Welt sehr wichtig. Klar, kann man sich auch online vernetzen, doch das ist nicht das Gleiche. Aber hey, dafür verkaufe ich jetzt sogar Werke über Instagram. Inwiefern hat sich deine Arbeit durch diesen Wandel verändert? Bisher habe ich hauptsächlich alleine in meinem Atelier gearbeitet. In den letzten Monaten war ich jedoch vermehrt mit grösseren Wandgemälden beschäftigt. Ich bin nun also näher an den Menschen – und schätze dies sehr. Die Leute reagieren auf meine Arbeit. Ich liebe es, wenn Mütter ihren Kindern eine Geschichte über meine Arbeit erzählen. Alle sehen was anderes in meinen Werken. Und genau das ist mein Ziel: Kunst für alle zu schaffen. Wie stellst du sicher, dass du den Sinn für die Realität nicht verlierst? Die Tatsache, dass ich in Basel lebe, hält mich automatisch auf dem Boden. Basel ist eine dermassen kulturell reiche und gebildete Stadt, und dennoch sehr bescheiden. Die meisten kommen bereits in ihrer Schulzeit in den Genuss von Museumsbesuchen. Für uns in Asien bleibt dies ein Luxus. Trotz dieser kulturellen Grösse ist der Vibe hier viel entspannter als in Zürich, London oder New York. Ich beobachte sehr gerne, wie Basler Locals – auch Junge! – es häufig bevorzugen, ins Theater oder in ein Konzert zu gehen, anstatt sich ein neues Luxusobjekt zu kaufen. Das finde ich wunderbar!

Ich würde es beispielsweise begrüssen, wenn es noch mehr Strassenfeste gäbe, wo private Leute für andere kochen, jeder sein Mobiliar rausbringt und man gemeinsam das Leben feiert. Wo in Basel bewegst du dich am liebsten? Ich liebe es, am Rhein spazieren zu gehen; am Tinguely Museum vorbei und über die Brücke bis ins St. Alban. Dort fühle ich mich immer, als würde ich mich in der Vergangenheit bewegen. Plus ist es sehr grün dort. Basel könnte definitiv mehr Grün vertragen! Was bedeutet dir dein Heimatviertel, das Kleinbasel? Ich bin ein grosser Fan davon! Kleinbasel ist für mich das kleine Brooklyn. Vom Dealer bis zur Kreativen gibt’s hier Raum für jeden. Ich kann nicht verstehen, wieso gewisse Leute sich noch immer vor dem Kleinbasel fürchten. Ich könnte mir beispielsweise nicht vorstellen, auf dem Bruderholz zu leben: Wer hilft dir dort bei einem Raubüberfall? (lacht) Wenn du dich selbst zeichnen würdest, wie sähe das aus? Ich bin wie ein alter Popeye – der Seemann, der eines Tages in den Armen der Frau Basel gestrandet ist. Happy, sicher und voller Inspiration! Gleichzeitig weiss er aber, dass er jederzeit wieder ans andere Ende der Welt segeln könnte. Zumindest bald wieder. Hoffentlich.

EDDIE HARA Herzlicher Softie trifft auf rebellischen Rockstar: Der erfolgreiche Künstler Eddie Hara (63) wusste schon immer, was er will; zeichnet lieber mit Pink als Braun und zählt mehr Rock-Musiker, Designer, Fotografen und Architekten zu seinem Freundeskreis als bildende Künstler. Vor gut 20 Jahren wurde Street Art in unseren Kunstkreisen noch nicht wirklich ernst genommen. Entsprechend schwer fiel Eddie, der ursprünglich aus Indonesien stammt und eine Zeit lang in den USA gelebt hat, die Ankunft und das Einleben in Basel (1996 wurde er von CMS für ein halbes Jahr in ein Austausch-Atelier eingeladen). Anschluss fand er vor allem in der barrierefreien Punk-Szene rund ums Hirschi. Ein paar Monate später verliebte er sich in seine heutige Frau Catherine, die ihn auch zum definitiven Umzug motivierte. Gemeinsam mit ihren zwei Kindern Mimmo (22) und Nestor (17) leben sie im Kleinbasel. Nach 24 Jahren in Basel bezeichnet sich Eddie selbst als «sehr glücklich – nicht nur mit meiner künstlerischen Karriere, sondern auch mit meiner Familie und meinen lokalen Freunden. W E H U M AN S AC T UAL LY H AV E MORE PATIENCE THAN WE ASSUMED SO FAR Eddie Hara: Never heard of him? We’ll just counter that straight away with: wrong! Why? Because you have definitely noticed the colourful glass front of what used to be the Terror Samba? Precisely: Eddie’s work. We met up with the 63-year-old for an interview. Clad in a Hawaiian shirt with a pair of round Corbusier glasses perched on his nose and with his pierced ears, he seems like an eternally youthful bird of paradise. But his peaceful demeanour and his wisdom don’t just radiate a Zen-like aura, they also make it very clear that Eddie Hara has gathered plenty of experience in his 63 years. Perhaps it is precisely this combination which makes the artist and his creations so appealing, in particular to the younger generation as well. When we met for an interview with this Basel local, who originally haled from Indonesia, he had come straight from a big assignment: “I am very relieved, because I have just completed the mural for the CBD Shop ADAMS in the Steinenvorstadt.” What else has Eddie been up to these last covid months and what he would most like to bring over here to Basel from Indonesia? Eddie, you have not had such an easy last year either, have you? How did you get through 2020? Yeah, the last year has really not been an easy one. I was sick with covid myself too. Luckily not too severely. But once again, I realised how grateful I am for my family. We gave each other strength without getting on each other’s nerves. Financially, luckily, I had enough savings to see us through. As an artist you are used to being alone a lot anyway. But I do still really miss the interaction with other people. So, I am really extremely relieved that things are slowly getting back to something like normality.

It is no secret that your work is often inspired by the frustration in this world. Has this crisis we are living through maybe even enriched you artistically? Well loneliness is definitely an issue that I have been devoting more time to. In this respect, I suppose you can talk about a certain degree of enrichment. My fury is always directed towards our society and the way it sometimes deals with our world. On this score, I was grateful for the sudden freeze; we were all challenged with the need to finally just stop and pause. All at once the sky was clear and the birds seemed to be chirping more loudly. And I also became aware myself about how many things I don’t actually need. People have got used to always getting what they need, immediately. But now, it’s different, everything is not just automatically available; which also shows that we people are much more patient than we had assumed up till now. What have you missed most during this time? The art crowd. And I don’t just mean the parties. For me, my discussions with artists from all over the world are really vital. Sure, you can network online but that is just not the same thing. But hey, now I am even selling my work via Instagram. How much has your work been affected by these changes? Well before, I mainly worked alone in my studio. But in recent months I have been busy painting large-scale murals. So, I am now actually in closer contact with other people – and I really treasure that. People react to my work. I love it when mothers tell their children stories about my work. Everyone sees something different in my creations. And that is precisely my goal: to create art for everyone. How do you make sure that you don’t lose you grip on reality? Well, just the fact that I live in Basel automatically keeps me grounded. Basel is a city so rich in culture, so well-educated, and yet very modest. Most of the children here already get to visit museums during their school years. For us in Asia, that is still a luxury. Despite the cultural splendour the vibe here is much more laid-back than in Zurich, London and New York. I love to see how the locals in Basel – young people too! – often choose to go to the theatre or a concert rather than buy themselves some luxury object. I think that’s just wonderful! Is there anything that you would like to bring over here from your home country, Indonesia? More communal living in Basel – that would be great! For example, I would love it if there were more street parties, where normal people just cook for each other, everyone brings out their own chairs and things, and people just celebrate life together.

Where in Basel do you most like to spend your time? I love strolling along the Rhine; past the Tinguely Museum and over the bridge into the St. Alban district. I always feel as though I have moved back in time there. And it is very green too. Basel could definitely do with more greenery! What does the district you live in, Kleinbasel, mean to you? I am a big fan of this area! For me, Kleinbasel is like a small version of Brooklyn. There is room for everyone here, from dealers to creative people. I just don’t understand why some people are still afraid of Kleinbasel .For example, I could not imagine going to live up on the Bruderholz: Who is going to help you there if you get mugged? (laughs) If you were going to draw a picture of yourself, what would you look like? I am like an old version of Popeye – the sailor who was marooned one fine day and found himself in the embrace of Madame Basel. Happy, secure and full of inspiration! EDDIE HARA Warm-hearted softie and rebellious rockstar rolled into one: the successful painter Eddie Hara (63) always knew what he wanted; prefers to draw in pinks than browns and has more rock musicians, designers, photographers and architects in his circle of friends than fine artists. 20 years or so ago, street art was not really taken seriously yet in art circles here. So Eddie, who originally hales from Indonesia and who had then lived in the States for a while, found arriving and settling in Basel quite difficult at first (in 1996 he was invited by the CMS Foundation to participate in a six-month exchange studio). He made friends most easily in the open punk scene centred around the Hirschi collective restaurant. A few months later he fell in love with his wife Catherine, who also motivated him to move here permanently. They live in Kleinbasel with their two sons Mimmo (22) and Nestor (17). Lust auf eine Zeitreise? Der 1876 eröffnete Musiksaal im Stadtcasino Basel ist einer der ältesten historischen Musiksäle in Europa, der noch als Konzertsaal in Gebrauch ist. Und: Seine Akustik kann es mit den besten Sälen der Welt aufnehmen. Doch ein Besuch lohnt sich nicht nur wegen dem Hörgenuss, sondern auch wegen dem Aus- und Umbau von Herzog & de Meuron. Mitten in Basel steht ein Casino. Dort findet man allerdings keinen einzigen Roulette-Tisch und einarmige Banditen gibt es da auch nicht. Das kommt daher, dass zur Zeit des Casino-Baus das Wort «Casino» eine andere Bedeutung hatte. Ein Casino war damals ein Gebäude mit Räumen für gesellige Zusammenkünfte. Und ein solches Gebäude brauchte die Stadt dringend, denn bis zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts gab es kaum öffentliche Orte, wo sich die bürgerliche Gesellschaft treffen konnte. Es gab kein Museum und ausserhalb der Kirchen nur einen einzigen Saal, in dem grössere Konzerte stattfinden konnten. Damals gab es keine staatliche Kulturförderung, das kulturelle Leben war durch Private und Vereine geprägt. Sie organisierten Vorträge, Konzerte und Ausstellungen. Auch die Anfänge des Stadtcasinos gehen auf eine private Initiative zurück: Ab 1808 trafen sich Mitglieder der Allgemeinen Lesegesellschaft in einer gemieteten Lokalität am Münsterplatz, um gemeinsam zu trinken, zu essen und Billard, Schach oder Bridge zu spielen. Natürlich war die Gesellschaft nur Männern vorbehalten, «Frauenzimmern» war der Zutritt untersagt.

Junger Architekt setzt ambitioniertes Bauvorhaben um Das fehlende Konzerthaus blieb ein Problem. Wer weltliche Musik hören wollte, war auf private Anlässe wohlhabender Familien angewiesen. Da waren dann durchaus auch «Stars» wie Clara Schumann oder Franz Liszt zu Gast – doch einfache Bürger bekamen für solche Hauskonzerte keine Einladung. Im Rahmen des Schweizerischen Musikfestes in Basel gründeten die geselligen Herren der Allgemeinen Lesegesellschaft schliesslich die «provisorische Comission zur Errichtung eines Gesellschaftshauses». Das neue Gebäude mit Konzert- und Tanzsaal, Spielzimmer, Erfrischungsräumen, Garderoben und einer Wohnung für den Abwart sollte für rund 96 000 Franken realisiert werden. Ausstattung inklusive. Nach der öffentlichen Ausschreibung des Projekts entschied man sich, dessen Umsetzung mit dem 22-jährigen Architektur-Studenten Melchior Berri anzugehen. 1824 wurde die Casino-Gesellschaft Basel offiziell gegründet. 1826 feierte das Stadtcasino Eröffnung. Fortan trafen sich die Mitglieder der Casino-Gesellschaft immer sonntags im Konzertsaal im ersten Stock, um Mozart, Beethoven oder Rossini zu hören. Die Rettung von Herzog & de Meuron Um die Jahrtausendwende wurde ein Neubau diskutiert, der den Casinobau von 1939 ersetzen sollte. Die Casino-Gesellschaft schrieb einen internationalen Wettbewerb aus. Das monumentale Projekt der irakischen Architektin Zaha Hadid gewann, wurde jedoch 2007 von der Basler Stimmbevölkerung abgelehnt. In den Folgejahren arbeitete das Basler Architekturbüro Herzog & de Meuron ein Projekt aus, das auch in der Bevölkerung auf Zustimmung stiess: Es sollte keine neue Architektur geben, sondern eine Verbreiterung des eigentlichen Baus im Stil des Bestehenden. 2016 konnte mit dem Umbau begonnen werden. Im Innern wurden wesentliche ursprüngliche Elemente wiederhergestellt, der alte Musiksaal wurde vom Stadtcasino von 1938 losgelöst und die notwendigen Zusatzräume zur Barfüsserkirche hin integriert.

Warum sich ein Besuch lohnt? Wegen der brillanten Akustik natürlich. Am besten in Verbindung mit einem der hochkarätigen Konzerte vom Sinfonieorchester Basel. Aber auch wegen der herausragenden architektonischen Verbindung von Tradition und Moderne. Äusserlich ist der Bau zurückhaltend, im Innern kann es nun nicht mehr nur die Akustik mit den berühmtesten Konzerthäusern der Welt aufnehmen. Die dunkelrote Brokat-Tapete, die opulenten Treppenhäuser, das eigens fürs Stadtcasino Basel entwickelte Parkett und die überraschenden Einund Ausblicke machen das neue Basler Konzerthaus zum wohl glamourösesten Ort der Stadt. Und das macht Sinn. Schliesslich konzertierten hier bereits Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt und Leonard Bernstein.

Die aussergewöhnliche Akustik machte die Erweiterung und Sanierung des Stadtcasino Basel enorm aufwendig. Jede Änderung im Musiksaal musste von Akustikexperten überprüft werden. Sämtliche Arbeiten wurden in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Denkmalpflege geplant. Die einst zugemauerten Fenster wurden wieder geöffnet, die Bestuhlung originalgetreu nachgebaut und die einstige Farbgestaltung wiederhergestellt. Nach vierjähriger Bauphase konnte das neue Konzerthaus im August 2020 eröffnet werden.

OPULENCE AND GLAMOUR FOR MUSIC Do you feel like taking a journey back in time? The music chamber that was opened in the Stadtcasino Basel in 1876 is one of the oldest historical music chambers in Europe still in use as a concert hall. And: the acoustics are on a par with the best concert halls in the world. But it is worth visiting not just for the pleasure of listening to music there, but also to see the expansion and renovation of the building by Herzog & de Meuron. There is a casino in the middle of Basel. But you won’t find a single roulette table there, nor are there any slot machines. This is because, when this casino was built, the word “casino” had a different meaning. At the time, a casino was a building with rooms where society would meet. And the city was in desperate need of such a building, because until the beginning of the 19th century there was scarcely a public venue where middle class society could gather. There were no museums, and apart from the churches, only one single hall where larger concerts could be performed. The state provided no funding for cultural events during that era, cultural life was organised by private individuals and societies. They would arrange lectures, concerts and exhibitions. The origins of the Stadtcasino were also at the initiative of a private society: Starting in 1808, the members of the Allgemeinen Lesegesellschaft (public reading society) would meet together in a location they rented at the Münsterplatz, to drink, eat, play billiards, chess and bridge together. Of course, the society was exclusively for men, “wenches” were barred from entering. Young architect realises ambitious building project The lack of a concert hall continued to pose a problem. Anyone who wanted to listen to secular music had to rely on the private events organised by wealthy families. “Stars” such as Clara Schumann and Franz Liszt really were invited to perform on these occasions – but the average citizen would not receive an invitation to such house concerts. In the context of the Swiss Music Festival in Basel, the gentlemen members of the Public Reading Society finally founded the “provisional committee for the erection of a Society House”. The new building with its concert hall and ballroom, games room, refreshment rooms, cloakrooms and an apartment for the caretaker was planned with a budget of 96,000 Swiss francs. Fixtures and fittings included. After the project had been put out to tender, a 22-year-old architecture student, Melchior Berri, was chosen to realise the project. In 1824 the Casino Society of Basel was officially founded. The opening of the Stadtcasino was celebrated in 1826. From this moment onwards, the members of the Casino Society met every Sunday in the music chamber on the first floor to listen to Mozart, Beethoven and Rossini. The well-to-do ladies sat on the right, while women of the middle classes sat on the left. At least they were now tolerated as companions to the gentlemen.

Superb acoustics were a coincidence The Stadtcasino was very popular with the general public and the number of visitors it received grew, as did the number of concerts. It wasn’t just Liszt and Schumann who performed in the Stadtcasino, Johannes Brahms and Anton Rubinstein conducted here too. It wasn’t long before the building no longer fulfilled the requirements on a contemporary concert hall. Which was why the Basel architect Johann Jakob Stehlin the younger was commissioned to design a concert hall that could hold up to 1,200 people. He devised an unpretentious rectangular room with a high ceiling, designed to be added on to the existing casino. “Without any particular objective in mind” Stehlin made his hall 21 metres wide, 36 metres long and 15 metre high. Only later did it become clear that these ratios were the reason for the hall’s excellent acoustic properties. When the new concert hall was inaugurated in 1876, the superb acoustics were a delightful surprise. This was confirmed by an expertise in 2016: In a worldwide comparison of halls with top-class acoustics the concert hall of the Stadtcasino Basel ranked 6th. Within Switzerland it was the best.

But plenty of other events have always been held here too, in addition to the concerts: for example, in 1877 the first Basel trade exhibition opened in the Stadtcasino. For two months 450 exhibitors presented their furniture, foodstuffs, art, musical instruments and a wide range of other products. The foundations had been laid for what later became the Swiss Trade and Sample Fair (Basel Mustermesse). Another milestone in history was the First Zionist Congress in 1897: It was here in the Stadtcasino that the grounds were laid for the establishment of a Jewish state. The congress was actually held ten times in the Stadtcasino until the state of Israel was finally founded in 1948 – more often than in any other town or venue in the world. Again and again: problems with space and renovations The wide variety of events being held here soon made it clear that the Stadtcasino’s capacity was already, once again, reaching its limits. Jakob Stehlin had had to make considerable reductions to the projected adjoining rooms when he was planning the Concert Hall, due to financial constraints. The result was that the rehearsal rooms were too small and the changing rooms too cramped. And the building was due for a renovation. So, in 1938, the original casino building by Melchior Berri was torn down and replaced by a building designed by Kehlstadt & Brodbeck, the merits of which are still considered debatable to this day. But at least various commissions managed to prevent the original plan for a 16-storey high-rise building being realised.

In the years that followed, in addition to the global political and economic crises, there were frequently also internal problems. They arose partly because of the different uses the building was put to: alongside the concerts with world-famous musicians, there were award ceremonies, auctions, fashion shows and even boxing matches. The noise level of the events which were sometimes held simultaneously were a regular source of irritation. Moreover, the architecture itself was only just withstanding the ravages of time, and repeated renovations to Jakob Stehlin’s architecture were required. Because the growing noise of the trams and cars had begun to disturb the concerts in the hall, the decision was taken in 1964, for example, to brick up the windows facing the road. The tram noise remained a problem compounded by other difficulties such as lack of space, technically outdated equipment and the constant need to renovate. Herzog & de Meuron to the rescue At the turn of the millennium, plans were being discussed to replace the 1939 casino with a completely new building. The Casino Association tendered an invitation to submit plans to an international competition. The winner was the monumental project submitted by the Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, but the project was vetoed by the population of Basel in a vote in 2007. In the years that followed the Basel architect’s office, Herzog & de Meuron, drafted a project that was acceptable to the populace: there was to be no new architecture, just a widening of the building itself in the existing style. In 2016 work could finally begin on the conversion. In the interior, key original elements were restored, the old concert hall was separated from the 1938 Stadtcasino and the additional rooms now required were integrated on the side of the building facing the Barfüsserkirche. The Basel Stadtcasino’s exceptional acoustics made the expansion and renovation immensely costly. Every alteration to the concert hall had to be monitored by acoustic experts. All the work undertaken was planned in close cooperation with the department for the preservation of historical monuments. The windows which had been bricked up were reopened, the seating faithfully reproduced according to the originals and the former colour scheme was restored. After four years of building work, the new concert hall was finally reopened in August 2020. Why is it worth a visit? Well because of the superb acoustics, of course. Preferably attending one of the excellent concerts performed by the Basel Symphony Orchestra. But also because of the outstanding architectural combination of tradition and modern. On the outside the building is low-key, but the interior can now compete with the most famous concert halls in the world, and no longer only in terms of the acoustics. The deep red brocade wallpaper, the opulent stairwells, the parquet flooring developed especially for the Stadtcasino Basel and the unexpected views, both inwards and outwards, have probably turned the new Basel Concert Hall into the most glamorous spot in town. And that makes perfect sense. After all, Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Franz Liszt and Leonard Bernstein all gave concerts here.

E I N UR BA NER KUNST- UND KULTUR R AUM I M HERZ EN VON BASEL Zwei bis drei Ausstellungen pro Jahr, Einbezug aktueller kulturpolitischer Diskurse, innovative Kunst- und Themenausstellungen, konzipiert aus individuellen und divergierenden Perspektiven – mit diesem Konzept ist die Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger I KBH.G im Sommer 2020 erfolgreich gestartet. Den Auftakt im aussergewöhnlichen Showroom, einer ehemaligen Fabrik für Mikromotoren, markierte eine Ausstellung über das Schaffen zeitgenössischer Künstler*innen aus der Karibik, welche lokal, national wie auch international besprochen wurde. Die zweite Ausstellung widmete sich dem Plakatschaffen des Universalkünstlers Pablo Picasso. Die Ausstellung, die aufgrund der Pandemie vorzeitig beendet werden musste und im Dezember 2021 wiederaufgenommen wird, steht für einen wichtigen Punkt im Programm der Stiftung. Sie will regelmässig thematisch völlig unterschiedliche, mitunter auch unbekannte Sammlungen von Basler*innen der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich machen.

A N UR BA N A RT A ND CULTURA L VENUE IN THE HE A RT OF BASEL Two to three exhibitions per year, inclusion of current cultural-political discourses, innovative art and theme exhibitions, conceived from individual and divergent perspectives – this is the concept with which the Kulturstiftung Basel H. Geiger I KBH.G started successfully in summer 2020. The first exhibition in the unusual showroom, a former factory for micromotors, was an exhibition on the work of contemporary artists from the Caribbean, which was discussed locally, nationally and internationally. The second exhibition was dedicated to the poster work of the universal artist Pablo Picasso. The exhibition, which had to end prematurely due to the pandemic and will be reopened in December 2021, represents an important point in the foundation’s programme. It wants to regularly make thematically completely different and sometimes unknown collections of Basel locals accessible to the public. The foundation’s local connection to the city of Basel, which it also bears in its name, is also underlined by the two-part exhibition project on the tree, as a representative of nature in the course of time as well as of art, by the Basel artist and curator Klaus Littmann, which started in spring 2021. His art interventions in public space, of international renown, at the same time inseparably linked to his hometown Basel and freely accessible to all, represent much of the founder’s vision.

FÜR MODE UND ACCESSOIRES Es gibt Boutiquen und Geschäfte, die sind aus einer Stadt nicht mehr wegzudenken. Sie prägen das Stadtbild ebenso wie deren Sehenswürdigkeiten. Eine solche Boutique ist das Bekleidungsgeschäft des gleichnamigen Labels «kleinbasel by Tanja Klein» im Herzen der Basler Altstadt an der Schneidergasse. Text: Devina Solanki Bilder: Ben Koechlin

Die Leidenschaft rührt aus der Familie: Tanjas Grossmutter war schon Schneiderin. Damals, während des zweiten Weltkrieges, als die Ressourcen noch knapp waren, ging ihre Oma «auf Stör» zu den Bauern und schneiderte Hochzeitskleider aus Vorhängen. Auch Tanjas Mutter ist Schneiderin, sie hatten immer ein Atelier zuhause. Und so wundert es nicht, dass Tanja sich als 14-jährige aus Leintüchern ihre ersten Kleider selber nähte. «Ich wollte schon immer Geschichten erzählen – mit Farb- und Modellkonzepten», erzählt mir Tanja und fährt fort: «Kleider, Ledertaschen, Prints – das sind die Grundpfeiler meines Labels und interessanterweise hat sich dies bis heute nicht verändert, aber natürlich weiterentwickelt.» Sozial, fair und nachhaltig Seit Beginn legt Tanja grossen Wert auf soziale Fairness und Nachhaltigkeit. Ihre Prints sind exklusives «kleinbasel by Tanja Klein Design». Ausser den paar Metern Stoff, welche jeweils für Einzelanfertigungen und Änderungen aufbewahrt werden, wird jeder Zentimeter verwertet. Die Kleidung wird in Europa produziert und ihre wunderschönen, stadtbekannten Signature-Taschen seit 20 Jahren im Tessin in der Schweiz. Mit ihrem Team von sechs Personen und insgesamt 480 Stellenprozent werden pro Jahr zwei Kollektionen entworfen. Zuzüglich haben zehn Bekleidungsgestalter im 2. Lehrjahr des Couture Ateliers Basel jeweils die Möglichkeit, eine Kleinserie herzustellen. «Diese mittlerweile schon traditionelle Zusammenarbeit ist mir sehr wichtig», betont Tanja und fährt fort: «Die textile Landschaft und das Handwerk in der Schweiz müssen unbedingt erhalten bleiben! Es ist schon traurig genug, dass der letzte Webstuhl in der Schweiz ausser Betrieb genommen wurde.» BASEL MOMENTS

Die Herausforderungen der Zeit Aktuell befindet sich «kleinbasel by Tanja Klein» nicht in ihren original Ladenräumlichkeiten, sondern auf einem Drittel der gewohnten Fläche in der Lokalität nebenan. Im Oktober 2020 begannen die Kernsanierungsarbeiten im Haus ihres normalen Geschäftsdomiziles. Der temporäre Umzug brauchte viel Kraft und vor allen Dingen Nerven. Die zeitweilige Verkleinerung führte zu Konzeptänderungen. Glücklicherweise war das Lokal nebenan frei und per Jahreswechsel 2021/2022 sollte der Umzug zurück stattfinden. Auch während des Corona-bedingten Lockdowns musste sich Tanja etwas überlegen. Während des ersten Lockdowns nutzte sie die Zeit um ihr Online-Angebot zu erweitern. Status quo sind bereits 800 Modelle online. Das digitale Upgrade läuft kontinuierlich weiter und die Transformation mit brandneuen Einkaufskonzepten ist auf Ende dieses Jahres angesetzt. Auch dem eingeschränkten finanziellen Aspekt während der Lockdowns wurde mit nachhaltigem Umgang begegnet, wie zum Beispiel mit der Verwendung von Lagerstoffen anstatt weiteren Einkäufen.

Inspirationsquellen und Zeitgeist Tanja ist eine sehr aktive, dynamische und weltoffene Person. Sie liebt Kunst und Kultur und reist für ihr Leben gerne. Ihre so gesammelten Eindrücke sind Inspiration für ihre Kollektionen. Sie geht aber auch tiefer. Aktuell stellt sie sich nämlich die Frage: «Was macht Corona psychologisch mit uns?». Den Einfluss auf ihr Metier zeigt ganz klar das Bedürfnis nach weichen Materialien. Im Home-Office benötigt man keine Kleidung für repräsentative Auftritte. So hat sie die Farbpalette ihrer Jersey- Modelle erweitert. Der Grundtenor im Moment lautet ganz klar: Nicht zu eng! Die ganze Lebenssituation ist ja schon sehr restriktiv, da möchte man sich privat mit der Kleiderwahl nicht auch noch einengen! Tanja und ihr Team bleiben nicht stehen. Sie entwickeln sich ständig weiter. Auf den Herbst und im Einklang mit der digitalen Transformation ist ein neues Einkaufserlebnis geplant. Die zwei Stunden vor der regulären Öffnungszeit um 11 Uhr sollen dem Personal Shopping gewidmet werden. Anhand des digitalen Profils der Kundin bereitet man sich auf deren Besuch vor, um ihr ein möglichst stressfreies und entspanntes Einkaufserlebnis zu bieten. Der Frustfaktor wird abgebaut und die Wertschätzung hochgekurbelt. Das Einkaufen soll so zu einem schönen Erlebnis gemacht werden, analog einem entspannten Kosmetiktermin. Vorfreude auf die zweite Jahreshälfte ist also garantiert: Es kommt die brandneue Herbst-Winter Kollektion, ein neues digitales und physisches Einkaufserlebnis und vor allen Dingen eine Ladenlokalität in neuem Glanz!

Tanja, wenn wir schon an der Quelle sind, möchten wir natürlich wissen: Was trägst du aktuell am liebsten? Zurzeit unsere langen, luftigen Röcke, mit welchen man auch ohne Probleme Fahrrad fahren kann. Dazu entweder Stiefeletten oder feine Absatzsandalen. Unser Oberteil «Alice», welches oben luftig ist und unten einen engen, breiten Bund hat, kann auch perfekt kombiniert werden. Meine Lieblingstasche ist die «Linea L.» – der Klassiker der ersten Stunde. Und was sollte sich im Schrank von jeder Frau befinden? Eine gutsitzende Culotte-Hose mit langem, breitem Bein. Ein paar T-Shirts oder Blusen und ein, zwei Kleider mit dem passenden feinen Gürtel. Nicht zu vergessen eine kleine Ledertasche, welche alles beinhaltet, was ein aktives Leben benötigt. Dann sicher ein paar High-Heels sowie einen flachen, weissen Ledersneaker, eine schöne flache Sandale oder ein Schnürschuh.

Bist Du in der Stadt aufgewachsen? Nein, in Pratteln. Mit 18 Jahren zog ich in die Stadt ins Neubadquartier. Danach war ich im St. Johann und jetzt bin ich im Breite-Quartier zuhause. MODE FÜR STILBEWUSSTE UND CORPORATE FASHION Tanja Klein absolvierte eine klassische Schneiderlehre, schnupperte in Los Angeles und New York und bildete sich zum Fashion Designer HFP in Zürich weiter, bevor sie 2001 den Brand «kleinbasel» mit ihrer ersten Kleiderkollektion ins Leben rief. Zwei Jahre später erweiterte sie ihr Sortiment mit einer Taschenkollektion aus feinstem Leder.

Was sind deine persönlichen Hot-Spots? Ich kaufe gerne am Basler Stadtmarkt und im Unternehmen Mitte ein. Ansonsten unterstütze ich sehr gerne meine unmittelbaren Nachbarn. Für den Wein gehe ich zu Ullrich oder Liechti und für Deko und mehr ins Hejkøh am Spalenberg. Ich esse gerne im Hotel Basel und im Ono, gehe aber auch gerne ins Gatto Nero oder ins Don Camillo im Kleinbasel. Ansonsten bin ich sehr gerne am Rhein und im Rhybadhüsli, welches sich ein paar Gehminuten von meinem Zuhause befindet. Ich finde es schön, ist das Zentrum von Basel belebt. Trotzdem: Die Entwicklung in den Quartieren finde ich wichtig und hier gibt es noch einiges zu tun.

Ihre urban orientierte Mode spricht zwei Zielgruppen von Frauen an: Solche, die voll im Leben stehen, schöne, bequeme Kleidung bevorzugen, aber nicht «overdressed» sein wollen. Die zweite Zielgruppe zielt ganz klar auf die Karrierefrau, die repräsentative Kleidung bevorzugt. Seit 2016 bietet Tanja auch Männermode an: Modulmässige Kollektionen mit perfekt sitzenden Basics in verschiedenen Materialien und Farben. Was viele nicht wissen; «kleinbasel by Tanja Klein» macht auch Massanfertigungen. Ein fester Bestandteil von Tanjas Arbeit ist zudem die Gestaltung von Corporate Fashion, also Bekleidung für Teams und Firmen. Zweimal schon hat sie den ersten Preis für ihre Kreationen gewonnen. 20 YEARS OF PASSION FOR FASHION AND ACCESSORIES It is impossible to imagine the city without certain of its boutiques and shops. They form the character of the city as much as its landmarks. One such boutique is the clothing store with the same name as its label “kleinbasel by Tanja Klein” on the Schneidergasse in the heart of Basel’s historic centre. Tanja’s passion was inherited from her family: her grandmother was already a seamstress. Back then, during World War II, when resources were so scarce, her grandmother used to go to her customer’s houses and create wedding dresses out of curtains. Tanja’s mother is a tailor too; they always had a workshop at home. So it is not surprising that at the age of fourteen, Tanja started making the first clothes for herself out of sheets. “I had always wanted to tell stories. With colours and pattern schemes.” Tanja tells me and then goes on: “Dresses, leather bags, prints – these are the mainstays of my label and interestingly enough that hasn’t changed so far, although it has evolved of course.” Socially-fair and sustainable Right from the start, Tanja attached great importance to the values of social fairness and sustainability. Her prints are exclusively “kleinbasel by Tanja Klein Design”. Apart from a few metres of fabric put aside for made-to-measure pieces and alterations, every centimetre of cloth is utilised. Her clothes are manufactured in Europe and her exquisite, signature bags, well-known all over town, have been produced in the Ticino, Switzerland for 20 years now. She designs two collections a year in collaboration with her team of six people, sharing employment hours of 480%. She also offers ten garment designers in the second year of their apprenticeship at the Couture Atelier Basel the opportunity to produce their own limited series. Tanja stresses “I find this collaboration, which has now become a tradition, very important”, and then continues: “It is absolutely imperative that Switzerland’s textile landscape and handcraft skills are preserved! It is already so sad that the last weaving loom left in Switzerland had to close down.” The challenges of the moment “kleinbasel by Tanja Klein” is not housed in its official shop premises at the moment, but in a third of the space it usually occupies in the building next door. The structural restoration of the building that usually houses the business started in October 2020. This temporary move required a lot of energy and mainly patience. The temporary downsizing also meant changes to the store’s concept. Luckily the shop premises next door were available and the move back is planned for the turn of the year 2021/2022. The team also had to come up with some new ideas because of the corona-related lockdowns. They used the time they had during the first lockdown to expand their online range. At the current count they already have 800 designs online. The digital upgrade is an ongoing work in progress and the transformation with brand new shopping concepts is planned for the end of the year. The limitations on finances caused by the lockdowns were also dealt with in a sustainable manner, for example, by using up fabrics they had in stock rather than buying in more.

54 Sources of inspiration and the spirit of the times Tanja is a very active, dynamic and liberally minded person. She loves art and culture and adores travelling. The impressions she gathers on her way are the inspiration for her collections. But she dives in deeper too. She is currently considering the question: “How is corona affecting us psychologically?” Its influence on her metier is very clear – the demand for supple materials. When you are in home-office you don’t need clothes for impressive appearances. So she expanded the choice of colours in her range of Jersey fabrics. The general mood at the moment is very clear: Not too tight! The whole situation people are living in at the moment is already so restrictive, they don’t want to restrict themselves even more in their private lives with their choice of clothes! Tanja and her team do not get stuck. They evolve constantly. They are planning a new kind of shopping experience for the autumn which is also aligned with their digital transformation. The two hours before the normal opening time at 11 a.m. are going to be devoted to ‘personal shopping’. Preparations for the customer’s visit will be made on the basis of their digital profile, the aim being to offer them a shopping experience that is as stress-free and relaxed as possible. Factors which can cause frustration will be minimised and respect for the customer maximised. The aim is to make shopping a pleasurable experience, a bit like going for a relaxing beauty treatment. So joyful anticipation is guaranteed for the second half of the year: there is the brand new autumn-winter collection, a brand new digital plus real-life shopping experience and above all a store in fresh new splendour!

Tanja, while we are at the source, of course we would like to know: what do you like wearing the most at the moment? At the moment, long, breezy skirts but ones that you can easily ride a bike with. To go with them, either ankle boots or classy sandals with heels. Our “Alice” top, which is airy at the top but with a snugly-fitting wide waistband at the bottom is a perfect combination too. My favourite bag is the “Linea L.” – our timeless classic from the very beginning. And what should every woman have in her wardrobe? A pair of well-fitting culottes with long, wide legs. A couple of t-shirts or shirts and one or two dresses with an elegant matching belt. Then, not to forget, a small leather bag containing everything you need for an active life. And definitely a pair of high heels, some flat-heeled white sneakers and a pair of flat sandals or lace-ups. Did you grow up in the city? No, in Pratteln. I moved into town when I was eighteen, into the Neubad district. Later I lived in St. Johann and now I am at home in the Breite district. What do you like best about Basel? The Rhine of course! And that we have such a beautiful, awe inspiring historic centre. Our cultural diversity, the gastronomy and I love the Cult cinemas. What are your personal hot-spots? I like shopping at the city market and at the ‘Unternehmen Mitte’. Apart from that, I like supporting my immediate neighbours. For wine I go to Ullrich or Liechti and for decoration and other items to Hejkøh on the Spalenberg. I like eating at the Hotel Basel and at Ono, but I also like going out to eat in Kleinbasel at the Gatto Nero or Don Camillo. And then I love spending time at the Rhine and at the Rhybadhüsli (public bathhouse on the Rhine), which is just a couple of minutes’ walk from where I live now. I like the fact that Basel has such a lively city centre. Nonetheless: I think it is important to develop things in the other areas of the city as well, and there is still quite a lot needs doing in that regard.

SYTLE-CONSCIOUS AND CORPORATE FASHION Tanja Klein completed a classical apprenticeship in tailoring, had practical work experience in Los Angeles and New York and then continued her training as a Fashion Designer HFP in Zurich, before launching her brand “kleinbasel” in 2001 with her first collection of clothes. Two years later she expanded her product range with a collection of bags made of the finest leather. Her urban-oriented style appeals to women in two target groups: on the one hand, women leading very active lives who favour attractive, comfortable clothes, but who do not want to appear “overdressed”. The second target group is very clearly career women who are looking for presentable clothing. In 2016 Tanja added a men’s range to her collection as well: modular collections with perfectly cut basics in a variety of materials and colours. What many people don’t know is that “kleinbasel by Tanja Klein” also creates made-to-measure clothes. Another regular feature of Tanja’s work is designing corporate fashion, i.e., clothing lines for teams and companies. She has already twice been awarded first prize for her creations. SCHMUTZIGE SCHAUFENSTER AUS GUTEM GRUND Hämmern, Schleifen, Schweissen – und dies seit 1913 am Münsterberg mitten in der Stadt. Die Schlosserei Weiland formt das Erscheinungsbild von Basel seit über 100 Jahren buchstäblich mit und beweist, dass gutes Handwerk Zukunft hat. Text & Bilder: Nicola Mathis

Es ist das wahrscheinlich schmutzigste Schaufenster der ganzen Stadt – und dennoch eines der spannendsten. Seit 1913 befindet sich die Schlosserei Weiland am Münsterberg 16 – das Hämmern aus der Werkstatt, die Arbeit mit dem Feuer und glühend heissem Metall fasziniert bis heute. Christoph Weiland, der das Basler Familienunternehmen in der 4. Generation führt, bekommt täglich Besuch von kleinen wie grossen Zuschauern: «Es gibt wohl kaum ein Geschäft mit schmutzigeren Schaufenstern. Das hat einerseits mit unserer Arbeit zu tun und andererseits mit den vielen gwundrigen Leuten, die sich ihre Nase an der Fensterscheibe plattdrücken. Wir könnten jeden Tag die Fenster putzen, doch ich denke, die trüben Scheiben gehören zum Charme unserer Werkstatt dazu.» Die Faszination für das Handwerk scheint ungebrochen zu sein. Wohl auch, weil jedes Handwerk auch immer eine Kunst darstellt. Feuer – der unverzichtbare Begleiter Und die Kunst, die in der Schlosserei Weiland entsteht, die ist zuerst einmal laut, rau, dreckig, heiss und gefährlich. Auf engstem Raum, eingepfercht zwischen Maschinen und Werkzeugen, die noch älter zu sein scheinen wie die Schlosserei Weiland selbst, arbeitet das kleine Team rund um Christoph Weiland an ganz unterschiedlichen Projekten für die Stadt. Geländer, Türen, Aushängeschilder, Stahlbauten oder Trägerkonstruktionen – das Handwerk in der Werkstatt besteht einerseits aus grober, körperlicher und andererseits aus feinster Millimeter-Arbeit. Es wird gehämmert, geschliffen, gebogen, geschweisst – das Feuer der unverzichtbare Begleiter, der den Schweiss tagtäglich auf die Stirne treibt. Doch am Ende überwiegt die Freude am Endprodukt. Die Freude, bei der Entstehung oder Restaurierung von etwas Bedeutsamem mitgewirkt zu haben und dieses danach in der Stadt anzutreffen. Durch die langjährige Geschichte des Unternehmens sowie dessen Spezialisierung auf Kunstschmiedearbeiten und Metallgestaltung, kommt Christoph Weiland an sehr spezielle und delikate Aufträge, an die sich andere Metallbauer erst gar nicht trauen würden. Wie beispielsweise das Restaurieren der Lanze von Ritter Georg an der Fassade vom Basler Münster. «Ich erinnere mich an den Auftrag hoch oben am Basler Münster, wo du auf uralte Steinmetzzeichen blickst und dann realisierst, dass du die Ehre hast, an diesem monumentalen Bau mitzuarbeiten. Ein sehr schönes Gefühl.»

Gutes Handwerk hat goldenen Boden Überhaupt gibt es kaum ein Kunstwerk der Stadt, das die traditionelle Werkstatt am Münsterberg nicht schon einmal von innen gesehen hat. So hat die Schlosserei Weiland den Basilisken der Wettsteinbrücke saniert oder die Kunstskulptur von Calder im Park der Fondation Beyeler repariert. Auch eine Vielzahl der kunstvollen, geschwungenen Aushängeschilder über den Eingängen diverser Basler Traditionslokale sind hier entstanden.

Während die Digitalisierung in sämtlichen Branchen mit grossen Schritten voranschreitet und teilweise keinen Stein auf dem anderen lässt, so scheint diese technische Umwälzung das traditionelle Handwerk der Schlosserei Weiland weniger zu berühren. «Da wir in einer solch geschichtsträchtigen Stadt leben, die gepflegt werden muss, wird es uns hoffentlich auch noch viele weitere Jahre geben», sagt Christoph Weiland und ist zuversichtlich. Denn sein Sohn hat auch schon Freude am Metallbau gefunden und kann sich vorstellen, das Traditionsunternehmen einmal zu übernehmen. Die 5. Generation Weiland steht also bereits in den Startlöchern.

DIRTY SHOP WINDOWS WITH GOOD REASON Hammering, grinding, welding – and all that on the Münsterberg, in the middle of town, since 1913. The Weiland locksmiths have literally been helping shape the face of Basel for over a hundred years and proving that good craftsmanship never dies. It is almost certainly the dirtiest shop window in the whole of town – but also one of the most fascinating. The Weiland locksmith’s shop has been located at Münsterberg 16 since 1913 – the hammering noises emanating from the workshop, the work with fire and red-hot metal is as fascinating today as it ever was. Christoph Weiland, who runs this Basel family business in the fourth generation, has spectators, large and small, visiting him every day: “There is almost certainly not a single business with windows dirtier than ours. That is partly because of the work we do and partly because of all the curious people who flatten their noses against the window pane outside. We could clean the windows every day but I think the murky panes are part of the charm of our workshop.” The fascination with craftsmanship it seems is unwavering. Probably because any form of craftsmanship is always an artform. Fire – the essential companion And these artworks that are created in the Weiland workshop, are first-off loud, rough, dirty, hot and dangerous. Working in the narrowest of spaces, crammed in between machines and tools that seem to be even older than the Weiland locksmith’s shop itself, the team led by Christoph Wieland is engaged in very different projects for the city. Railings, doorways, shop signs, steel and support structures – the handwork in the workshop consists of, on the one hand, rough physically demanding work, and on the other, the finest precision work. Hammering, grinding, bending, welding – with fire the essential companion, breaking their foreheads out in a sweat every day. In the end, it is the joy of the finished product that prevails. The joy of having been involved in the creation or restauration of something significant and of then espying it somewhere in the city afterwards. Thanks to the company’s long history and its specialisation in artistic wrought ironwork and metal design, Christoph Weiland is entrusted with very special and delicate commissions which other metalworkers would not even consider taking on. For example, the restoration of St. George’s lance from the façade of Basel Cathedral. “I remember an assignment up at the top of Basel Cathedral, seeing ancient stonemason’s marks and realising what an honour it is to be contributing to the work on this monumental building. A really wonderful feeling.”

A skilful trade is a goldmine Anyhow, there is scarcely an artwork in the city that the old-fashioned workshop on the Münsterberg has not seen from the inside at one time or another. For example, the Weiland locksmiths renovated the basilisks on the Wettstein Bridge and the work by Calder that stands in the park of the Beyeler Foundation. Many of the artfully worked, elliptical signs hanging over the entrances of a variety of Basel’s traditional watering holes were created here. While digitalisation is making huge strides into almost every branch of industry, leaving not a stone standing in some of them, it seems that this technical upheaval is affecting the traditional trade of the Weiland locksmith shop to a far lesser degree. “Hopefully, the fact that we live in a city so steeped in history which requires constant maintenance, means we will be around for a good many more years”, says Christoph Weiland and he is optimistic. With good reason, because his son too has already discovered the joys of metalworking and can well imagine taking over the long-established company one day. So, the fifth generation of the Weiland family is already waiting in the wings.

STILLE ENTDECKUNGEN Wer sich gerne abseits der Massen bewegt, findet in Basel zauberschöne Ecken, in denen es sich wunderbar schlendern, lesen und träumen lässt. Hier ein paar Ideen für ruhige Spaziergänge und einen steilen Aufstieg.

BOTANISCHER GARTEN Spalengraben 8 − botgarten.unibas.ch − geöffnet täglich ab 8 Uhr Der 1589 gegründete Botanische Garten der Universität Basel ist einer der ältesten Botanischen Gärten der Welt. Im historischen Viktoriahaus wachsen imposante Amazonas-Seerosen mit Blättern mit bis zu zwei Metern Durchmesser. Das Tropenhaus wird gerade neu gebaut und kann daher bis Herbst 2022 nicht besichtigt werden – trotzdem ist der Botanische Garten ein Einod inmitten der Stadt. Wer genug hat von den wundersamen Gewächsen, gönnt sich auf einem der schönen Bänkli im Grünen eine Pause. The Botanical Gardens of the University of Basel, founded in 1589, is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world. Imposing Amazon water lilies with leaves reaching 2 metres in diameter thrive in the historical Victoria greenhouse. The Tropical greenhouse is currently being rebuilt and will only be reopened to visitors in autumn 2022 – despite this, the Botanical Gardens are still a quiet refuge in the middle of the city. When you have seen enough of all the wondrous plants, you can treat yourself to a break on one of the lovely park benches among all the greenery.

WENKEN-PARK

Bettingerstrasse Riehen Die Parkanlage, welche die beiden Villen am Ortsrand von Riehen umgibt, ist perfekt für Verliebte und sonstige Ruhesuchende. Kaum hat man das barocke Eingangstor mit den vergoldeten Hirschen durchschritten, möchte man auf den gepflegten Rasen sinken und diesen herrlichen Ort nie wieder verlassen. Springbrunnen, Gartenpavillon, Allee, Weiher und die Kunst von Richard Serra – man gerät unweigerlich ins Träumen ob all der Pracht. Unbedingt Decke, Picknick-Korb und viel Zeit zum Entspannen mitbringen! The grounds of this park surrounding two villas on the outskirts of Riehen are perfect for lovers and anyone else seeking peace. The minute you walk through the baroque entrance gate decorated with gilded deer, you will be overcome with the desire to sink down on its carefully tended lawns and then never leave this delightful place again. Fountains, a garden pavilion, avenues, ponds and the art of Richard Serra – you can’t help but fall into a reverie in the face of all this splendour. Don’t forget a blanket, a picknick basket and plenty of time to relax!

MÜNSTERTURM baslermuenster.ch − geöffnet täglich ab 10 Uhr − eine Besteigung der Türme ist während des Mittagsgebetes zwischen 11.50 Uhr und 12.20 Uhr nicht möglich. 250 Stufen steil ist der Aufstieg zum Himmel. Zumindest im Basler Münster. Dort können der Georgs- sowie der Martinsturm über eine enge, teils dunkle Treppe erklommen werden. Das geht in die Wädli und ist nichts für Menschen mit Klaustrophobie! Oben wartet dafür ein einzigartiger Ausblick über die Dächer von Basel, den Rhein und die Umgebung auf dich. Und diese Stille … Da lohnt sich jede Schweissperle! Achtung: Der Aufstieg ist erst ab zwei Personen erlaubt. The ascent to heaven is up 250 steep steps. At least in Basel Cathedral it is. You can climb to the top of its St. George’s and St. Martin’s steeples via a narrow, sometimes very dark stairwell. You’ll certainly feel it in your calves and the climb is definitely not recommended for people with claustrophobia! But when you reach the top, you are greeted with an exceptional view over the roofs of Basel, the Rhine and the surrounding areas. And it is so peaceful … it’s worth every drop of sweat! Please note: You have to be with at least one other person to gain entry to the spires. BASEL MOMENTS

GARTEN DER ALTEN UNIVERSITÄT Rheinsprung 9/11 (Münsterhügel) – geöffnet täglich ab 8 Uhr. Bis 1939 war die Universität in einem mittelalterlichen Gebäude am Rhein untergebracht. Dort wurde auch der erste botanische Garten errichtet. Er diente ursprünglich dem Pflanzenstudium der Medizinstudenten und zur Herstellung von Heilmitteln. Vor wenigen Jahren wurde das Gelände saniert und zu neuem Leben erweckt. Heute gibt es hier einen Lustpavillon und Pflanzen, wie sie auch vor 400 Jahren bereits im Garten wuchsen. Unter der Kornelkirsche aus dem 19. Jahrhundert kannst du die Ruhe am Rhein geniessen. Until 1939, the university was housed in a mediaeval building on the banks of the Rhine. And the first botanical gardens were laid out next to it. Their original purpose was to allow medical students to study plants and to manufacture remedies. A few years ago, the site was restored to new life. Now the gardens have a gazebo and the same plants that grew in the garden here 400 years ago. You can enjoy the peace of the Rhine sitting beneath the dogwood trees planted in the 19th century.

RUND UM HEUBERG UND GEMSBERG Es sind nur kleine Berge, die du hier besteigen musst und die Treppenstufen hoch und runter zu steigen lohnt sich. Hier bist du zwar mitten in der Stadt, aber dennoch ganz weit entfernt von Lärm und Getümmel. Kein Wunder spazieren hier gerne Eltern mit ihren schlafenden Babys. Zauberhafte Hausfassaden, Türen und viele charmante, witzige Details und Dekorationen lassen dich den Fotoapparat garantiert mehr als einmal zücken. It’s only a couple of very small hills you have to climb here, and it is worth taking the stairs up and down again. You may be right in the middle of town, but you are far away from all the hustle and bustle. No wonder parents like to go for a stroll here with their sleeping infants. Enchanting facades, doors and a trove of charming, amusing details and decorations will certainly have you reaching for your camera more than once.

ST. ALBAN-TAL / DALBELOCH Die malerischen Gässchen, der Kanal, das Mühlrad und die historischen Bauten erinnern eher an ein mittelalterliches Dorf als an eine Stadt. Hinzu kommt diese Stille, die nur vom Vogelgezwitscher gestört wird. Hin und wieder erhascht man einen Blick auf die auf der gegenüberliegenden Rheinseite gelegenen Roche-Türme und erinnert sich: «Stimmt, ich bin ja in Basel!» Auch das letzte Stück der alten Stadtmauer findest du hier und das Kloster St. Alban, in welchem der Maler Arnold Böcklin einen Teil seiner Jugend verbracht hatte. Ach ja, hier zu wohnen wäre schön! The picturesque little alleyways, the canal, the mill wheel and the ancient buildings are all more reminiscent of a mediaeval village than a city. And it is so peaceful here, the only disturbance is the twittering of the birds. But every now and then you’ll catch a glimpse of the other bank of the Rhine and the Roche tower and then remember: “Of course, I’m in Basel!” The last remaining stretch of the city wall is located here too and the St. Alban monastery where the painter Arnold Böcklin spent some of his youth. Yes, it would be lovely to live here!

MERIAN GÄRTEN Vorder Brüglingen 5 – meriangaerten.ch – geöffnet täglich ab 8 Uhr Rhododendren, Clematis oder Fuchsien, aber auch Gemüse, Obst und Kräuter; auf 18 Hektar Land bieten dir die Merian Gärten Zierpflanzen, Beete, Nutzpflanzengärten, ein historischer Englischer Garten – es könnte schöner nicht sein. Ohne auch nur einen Tropfen Schweiss beim Rasenmähen oder Jäten vergossen zu haben, kannst du dich hier mit einem guten Buch oder mit Papier und Pinsel unter die Bäume legen, dich von den Farben und Düften inspirieren lassen, Bäume umarmen oder auch einfach ein wenig dösend die Ruhe geniessen. Rhododendrons, clematis and fuchsias, but vegetables, fruit and herbs too; extending over more than 44 acres of land, the Merian Gardens are full of ornamental plants, flower beds, kitchen gardens and an historic English Garden – it couldn’t be lovelier. It won’t cost you one drop of sweat mowing the lawn or weeding, to lie down here under the trees with a good book or a canvas and paint brush, and be inspired by the colours and scents surrounding you; you can hug the trees or simply enjoy a dozy rest in the peace and quiet.
