Pro Carton Flipbook Summer 2025

Page 1

We find ourselves navigating a world defined by rapid and profound change. Geopolitical tensions, volatile markets, tariff discussion, and shifting consumer confidence continue to test the resilience of industries across Europe and beyond.

And yet, our industry holds firm.

The cartonboard and fibre-based packaging sector continues to demonstrate both strength and purpose. We are not simply adapting to change — we are actively shaping it. With the advancement of the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), our materials are being recognised as essential building blocks of a more sustainable, circular, and bio-based economy.

Our forest-based solutions — renewable, recyclable, and responsible — are more relevant than ever. They meet the needs of climate-conscious consumers, forward-looking brands, and a society striving for low-impact alternatives.

It is within this context of transformation and opportunity that I warmly invite you to join us in Istanbul, in September 2025.

At our congress, we will reflect on the challenges ahead, exchange ideas, and define our collective path forward — inspired by expert insights and by the unique setting of Istanbul, a city that connects Europe and Asia, tradition and innovation.

The highlight of our gathering will be the live announcement of the European Carton Excellence Award and the Pro Carton Student Award winners — a celebration of innovation, creativity, and the sustainable spirit that drives our industry forward.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Istanbul — to reconnect, to celebrate, and to shape the future of packaging together.

Warm wishes,

Carton

We extend our sincere thanks to our sponsoring partners, whose commitment and enthusiasm for nurturing the next generation of talent shines through. Discover some of their inspiring motivations in this month’s issue.

We wish you a sunny, joyful, and inspiring summer— and we can’t wait to welcome you in Istanbul this September

WASTE REGULATIONLABELLING, DRAFT FROM THE JOINT RESEARCH CENTER (JRC) FROM THE EU COMMISSION

Stakeholder consultation on the design of EU harmonized waste sorting labels. Pro Carton responded to the consultation conducted by JRC as they seek to implement harmonized waste sorting labels for packaging, in line with the Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation.

JOINT INDUSTRY STATEMENT ON RECOMMENDATIONS ON PACKAGING WASTE

SORTING LABELS

The main calls from our industry are: No mandatory use colors and text on the packs. QR codes are valuable tools to inform impaired people and to provide additional information e.g. on how to sort contaminated/dirty packaging. The design of the pictogram is important to ease recognition by consumers. Separate paper pictogram and a cardboard pictogram as collected separately in some MS – to be applied to mono-material packaging (up to 5% non-paper content - PPWR). Instead of “mixed canister”, use the term “paper composite”. Two pictograms for paper composite to reflect the diversity of paper composite packaging and the different paper content thresholds in Member States. Future review: pictograms to be linked with compatibility of packaging with a reference recycling process. You can see the statement here.

JOINT INDUSTRY STATEMENT ON HARMONISED WASTE SORTING LABELS

Pro Carton signed a Europen statement to express strong concern and opposition to the use of text and colour for waste sorting labels on packaging. Statement can be downloaded here.

ADVOCACY UPDATES ON PPWR AND OTHERS

Updates on PPWR & More Part 2

LEGAL CASES AGAINST THE PPWR

Seven plastic companies have filed a case in annulment of several articles of PPWR (3 German companies, 2 Italian companies, 1 French company, and 1 Romanian company) –orchestrated by IK (German plastic industry) (Ecoplastica et ILIP), (Jokey, Saier et Schütz) (Dynaplast) (Raficon), supported by the German law firm Kappellmann. Annulment focuses on articles 25 (bans) and 29 (reuse targets) on the grounds of proportionality, discrimination against plastic, legal basis (not internal market), lack of motivation. Four more appeals have been published in the Official Journal of the EU on June 24. Several of the applicants are retail outlets located in border areas, particularly between Germany and Denmark (here and here). They are challenging the deposit obligation for plastic bottles and cans, pointing to the lack of interoperability between different countries, and are seeking the annulment of Article 50 of the regulation. “ENVIRONMENTAL OMNIBUS” EU COUNTRIES CONFIRM CALL FOR BROAD CUTS TO GREEN DISCLOSURE RULES (CSRD)

Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive: EU countries have formally approved a joint position calling for dramatic cuts to supply chain transparency obligations for businesses and proposed reduction of corporate sustainability reporting and supply chain due diligence rules, part of the first omnibus simplification bill. A draft version of the compromise showed that EU countries agreed to only ask companies with more than 5,000 employees and €1.5 billion in net turnover to police their supply chains. EU countries also agree that companies should only have to assess their direct suppliers. The Council also wants to postpone the deadline by which EU countries must transpose the directive into national law by a year.

With a passion for precision and a dedication to mentoring the next generation, Michelle Brosch is making her mark in the packaging industry. Starting as an apprentice at Schwarzach Packaging in 2018, she has quickly risen through the ranks to become both a machine operator and a trainer for future packaging technicians. Her journey highlights the growing role of women in technical professions and the importance of strong training programs in shaping the industry’s future.

Background and Introduction

Can you provide a brief introduction to yourself and your current role in the carton and cartonboard industry?

My name is Michelle Brosch, I am 22 years old, and I work at Schwarzach Packaging as a machine operator as well as a trainer for apprentices in packaging technology. In 2018, I began my own apprenticeship as a packaging technician at Schwarzach Packaging, which I successfully completed in 2022.

How did you first become interested in this field, and what led you to your current career path?

I first became aware of this career through various apprenticeship platforms. Initially, I wanted to become a hairdresser, but after a trial day at Schwarzach Packaging, I quickly realized that the technical field was not only something I was good at but also something I truly enjoyed. At that time, the proportion of women in this industry was still relatively low—so it makes me even happier to see that more and more women are now choosing this career path.

“Positive change in the industry”

Part 3

Industry Impact

How do you believe your work contributes to the sustainable and environmentally friendly aspects of cartonboard packaging?

A strong education and role models play a crucial role in ensuring that many young people remain in the company or the industry after completing their apprenticeships. This is an important contribution to sustainable development and helps address the shortage of skilled workers.

I am particularly pleased to see that women working on large machines is becoming the norm. The increasing diversity in technical professions brings fresh perspectives and strengthens our team.

Additionally, I place great importance on the responsible handling of products and raw materials. A strong focus on quality not only enhances our packaging solutions but also helps optimize resource efficiency and reduce waste.

“Positive change in the industry”

Part 4

What trends or developments in the industry are you most excited about, and how do they influence your work?

The growing number of women in technical professions is a development I find particularly exciting. It reflects a positive shift in the industry and encourages more young women to consider a career in packaging technology.

Advice and Inspiration

What advice do you have for individuals considering a career in the carton and cartonboard industry?

My advice for anyone interested in this profession: Just apply or attend a trial day to experience packaging technology firsthand.

Are there any personal or professional accomplishments that you are especially proud of and would like to share?

I am particularly proud of my role as a trainer and the numerous training and development opportunities Schwarzach Packaging has provided me. My greatest achievement is helping my apprentices successfully pass their final exams.

What is the one reason why you are proud to work in the carton and cartonboard industry?

Every time I see a package in a supermarket that my team and I have produced, I feel a sense of pride. Knowing that my work contributes to high-quality, sustainable packaging solutions makes this career incredibly fulfilling.

Michelle’s story is a testament to the opportunities available in the packaging industry, particularly for those willing to learn, innovate, and support the next generation of skilled professionals. As more young talents discover the field, mentors like Michelle play a vital role in shaping a diverse and forward-thinking workforce.

Sappi Europe Champions Paper in the Modern Age

As digital channels continue to dominate communication, Sappi Europe is reaffirming the power and sustainability of paper through a series of innovative campaigns across the continent. From France to Italy and Germany, Sappi is collaborating with industry organisations, schools, and creative communities to challenge misconceptions and promote paper’s environmental value. In France, a national campaign with the GMI confronts stereotypes around deforestation and recyclability using a paper superhero to engage especially younger audiences. In Italy, the “OrigAMA la carta” initiative reaches over 1,000 students with a hands-on competition, encouraging creative storytelling around sustainability. Meanwhile, Sappi supports Germany’s WE.LOVE.PRINT initiative, blending education and industry advocacy to position print within omnichannel strategies. These initiatives are part of a broader vision, as explained by Sappi Europe VP Flavio Froehli, to showcase the industry's leadership in reducing emissions, advancing circular practices, and shaping a responsible communication future. Together, these efforts position paper not just as a timeless medium, but as a key player in the transition to a more sustainable world.

Forests Gain New Climate Recognition with ISO 13391

A new global standard, ISO 13391, is set to transform how the climate impact of forests is measured. Instead of focusing solely on carbon storage, the standard also accounts for the emissions avoided when wood replaces fossil-based materials—giving a complete picture of forests’ climate contribution.

For Holmen, one of Sweden’s leading forest companies, this is a game-changer. The company can now report its climate benefits more accurately, strengthening communication with stakeholders and guiding more informed decisions. Developed with strong Swedish input, ISO 13391 marks a significant step in recognising the forest sector’s vital role in the green transition.

Billerud’s commitment to sustainability has received international recognition with a prestigious A-list ranking in the “Climate” category from CDP, the global environmental disclosure platform. Out of nearly 25,000 companies assessed worldwide in 2024, Billerud stood out for its transparency and action in climate reporting. “This recognition is an honour and a reflection of the systematic and long-term sustainability work we’ve put in,” said Ulrika Wedberg, EVP Sustainability & Public Affairs at Billerud. “Our European operations are already close to fossil-free, and we are continuing to reduce emissions in our American production facilities as well.”

Billerud’s renewable paper and packaging materials also support a fossil-free future by replacing more carbon-intensive materials, reinforcing the company’s role in the green transition. The achievement follows the approval of Billerud’s new Science Based Targets (SBTi), which include a goal to reduce Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 (base year: 2022). CDP’s annual assessments are considered a global benchmark for environmental leadership. With this A-list placement, Billerud cements its position as a front-runner in transparent and impactful sustainability work.

Graphic Packaging International (GPI) has introduced a new line of paperboard sushi packaging designed to help foodservice operators meet EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) requirements—while aligning with consumer preferences for more sustainable options. As sushi continues to rise in popularity across Europe—Germany's ready-to-eat sushi share has grown from 7% to over 30% of the snack market—so too has the demand for packaging that is both compliant and appealing. GPI’s portfolio includes plastic-free, laminate-free, and low-plastic (<5%) options, all designed for recyclability in household waste streams.

The new range features clamshells, trays, pagoda-style boxes, and flat or nested trays, combining smart structural design with fog-free cellulose windows for freshness and visibility. These formats not only ensure efficient storage and handling but also offer eye-catching shelf appeal through vibrant, high-impact graphics.

“This is a fresh take on sushi packaging,” said Philipp Eissner, Business Development Manager at GPI. “It reflects our commitment to insight-led innovation—helping customers make the shift from plastic to paperboard without compromising on function or sustainability.”
