Mission Statement Catholic Action of Mary (CAM) is a religious organization founded in 1978 at Saint Mary’s Church. The core mission of CAM is to uphold the teachings of the Catholic Church through serving, helping the church and honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through the faith filled traditions of the Filipino Mass, Block Rosary, Simbang Gabi, Pabasa, Salubong, Divine Mercy Pilgrimage and the Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo, the officers and members can hold the mission true.

History Catholic Action of Mary (CAM) was founded in 1978 at St. Mary’s Parish. Many of the founders of CAM, were members of the Block Watch in downtown Jersey City, including ‘Henderson Street’ (now Manila Ave.) Laurel Ct, and Saddlewood Ct. In partnership with the Filipiniana Society, the 1st Santacruzan celebration in downtown Jersey City was established. Every year since 1979, the Executive Chairman is named from the Catholic Action of Mary to continue the tradition. Going into 2021, it is now the oldest and longest Santacruzan celebration on the East Coast of the USA. In 1997, St Mary’s Parish joined with four other parishes, St. Peter’s, St. Boniface, St. Bridget and St. Michael’s Church merged and became ‘Resurrection Parish’. In 2014, Parish of the Resurrection dissolved and St. Mary’s Church became St. Mary’s Parish once again. These churches shared a significant number of Filipino parishioners and their Filipino Catholic religious traditions.

Prior to 1997, the Executive Chairman of Santacruzan served at the Catholic Action of Mary’s helm of leadership. In 1997, Mrs. Connie Kasilag became the 1st CAM President, she saw that with many Filipino Catholic religious traditions that CAM hosts yearly, CAM should have a community leader specifically, a president, to oversee those matters. The Catholic Action of Mary through its activities, has contributed to the celebration of several filipino religious traditions to the rich multi-ethnic fabric of St. Mary’s Parish and serves the community and church by helping to raise funds and honoring the Blessed Mother.

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Pax et Lux! With a grateful heart we thank the Almighty Father for the 42nd Anniversary of the Catholic Action of Mary. From the bottom of my heart, I want to congratulate each one of you for your devotion and dedication in the service of the diverse community of St. Mary’s Church. As your monthly celebrant and homilist I want you know that I enjoy our gathering around the Table of the Lord, as one family lifting up to the Father the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass which is the center of our Christian life.

In the midst of the pandemic you never cease helping the community, that is why the Lord is pleased for you continuously listening to His Mother, who in St. John’s gospel told to the servants to “Do whatever Jesus tells you.” We are all God’s servants and we are all sons and daughters of Mary. With her we glorify the Lord through our acts of love.

May our Blessed Mother the “Theotokos” continuously intercede for us and protect us under her maternal care, like her let us strive to be Christ’s bearers to all we meet.

Again thank you for your service and dedication and please be assured of my prayers for you and your loved ones. As we listen look up to the our heavenly Mother let us open the ears of our hearts and do whatever Jesus tells us to do!

Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo The History Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo in Jersey City: Catholic Action of Mary- CAM Forty-Two Years of Filipino Traditions & Culture The story of how the Santacruzan and the Catholic Action of Mary came to be in Jersey City reintertwined. It is a love story. During the 1970s, in the United States, many filipino immigrants beganto settle in downtown Jersey City. Laurel Court, Saddlewood and soon the neighboring streets were filled with Filipinos living in nearly every house, in what was soon named ‘Manila Avenue.’ The filipino immigrants who settled here in downtown Jersey City started to become homesick because they missed their homeland. However, being surrounded by a large filipino community, many were comforted.

The Block Watch - In the late 1970s, Jersey City was not the safest place to live. There were many crimes and muggings going on. This led to the formation of ‘The Block Watch’ to protect the community especially the women coming home from work at night. The women and children were escorted by car and the Block Watch continued for many years.

The Beginning of Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo in Jersey City - The members of The Block Watch’ wanted to spread the filipino culture and religious traditions, because of their love of the Blessed Mother and of their Church. One of the most revered religious celebrations is the Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo in the Philippines. This formed the Catholic Action of Mary or ‘CAM’ in 1978. CAM’s mission as leaders of the community were to cultivate and preserve the religious traditions and culture of the Philippines at St. Mary’s Parish in Jersey City and to fundraise for the parish. The center mission of CAM is to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The meaning of the Santacruzan is the commemoration of the finding of the true cross by Queen Helena (Reyna Elena) who was the mother of Emperor Constantine, the emperor of Rome who was pivotal in making the Roman Empire a Christian nation. During the colonial period of Spanish Rule over the Philippines, the maytime celebration of Flores de Mayo meaning flowers of May was celebrated in conjunction with the feast of the True Cross. Thus, the Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo were combined and celebrated in May. The relic of the True Cross which is used in the Santacruzan procession at St. Mary’s Parish in downtown Jersey City resides at St. Aedan’s Church in Jersey City.

Now in the year 2020, CAM honors its 42nd year of Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo. In a year where a pandemic known as Covid-19, halted the physical celebration of the tradition, the dedicated believers in the Santacruzan preserved and honored the tradition through other ways. Prayer intentions were offered daily. Virtual pictures and Santacruzan ‘throwbacks’ were all over social media.Virtually in the Month of May 2020, a daily rosary was offered and on May 24, 2020, the 42nd Anniversary of Santacruzan was celebrated online through a rosary with many in attendance. Even in the face of uncertainty, the filipino religious tradition of the Santacruzan and Flores de Mayo is alive and well.

PACCAL is a multi-service 501 (c3) organization founded in 1992 to assess and or to address the health and human service needs of Filipinos and other Asians in Jersey City.

HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES To promote the development of New Jersey residents and communities, primarily Asian Americans, by providing a comprehensive access to health and human services initiatives.

CULTURAL To promote New Jersey’s Filipino and Asian heritage through culturally competent and community needs-based programs and initiatives.

In Memoriam

Richard Torres 1945-2020 Richard Torres, age 75, of Somerset passed away peacefully, on Thursday, May 21, 2020 at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. He was the dear husband of Fernandina (Mateus) Torres to whom he was married for 45 years.

Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Manuel and Stella (Barkan) Torres. A proud graduate of Bridgewater State University, where he earned his Bachelor and Master’s degrees. Richard dutifully served his country with the United States Navy.

Richard retired as a teacher for the Taunton Public School system after over 30 years of service in 2003.

He loved history, cats, reading newspapers, doing crossword puzzles, and working in the garden.

He was a caring and a generous husband, father, Dindinho/Uncle Richard and Dziadziu.

Besides his wife, Richard leaves: his loving daughter, Michele Torres of Fall River and Kara TorresKilgannon and her husband Richard of Swansea; three grandchildren, Thijs Kilgannon, Sebastian Kilgannon, and Stella Kilgannon. He was the beloved Dindinho of Lori Gorman and her husband Dustin of Berkley, his favorite sister in law Judy Carvalho and his best friend Louis Carvalho.

Richard will be dearly missed by all of his extended family and friends.

Marina Martinez Baisas 1926-2013 Marina Martinez Baisas, fondly called “Tita Nena”, was born on July 7, 1926 in Pangil, Laguna.

She was married to the late Dr. Wilfrido Baisas of Paete, Laguna. They have two children – Perry and Lourdes. Perry, deceased, was married to Consuelo Tadeo. Lourdes is married to Deacon Cesar Sarmiento.

Marina was a pharmacist and taught at the Biochemistry Lab at the College of Medicine of the Manila Central University. She migrated to the United States in 1969. She worked at Cornell University then at Willner Chemists in New York City until her retirement. She lived with her family in Brooklyn, NY until she moved to Jersey City in 1977.

Marina served as a Eucharistic Minister and she was also a Trustee at the Parish of the Resurrection.

She was one of the founders, the first Secretary and one of the Advisers of the Catholic Action of Mary. She was one of the organizers of the block rosary at St. Mary’s. She was a recipient of the Jubilee Medal pro Meritis for service to the Archdiocese of Newark. She was also a volunteer teacher in the Literacy Program of the Jersey City Public Library.

Marina succumbed to pancreatic cancer one month after she was diagnosed with this illness. She was blessed with six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
