Welcome to the November edition of MomsTown. We are proud to welcome the communities of San Elijo Hills, Old Creek Ranch, Rancho Carrillo and Olivenhain.

MomsTown is brought to you compliments of your local realtor, Ilana Huff and the Huff Team. We are excited to partner with Ilana and her team as we work to shine a light on mom creators.

This month MomsTown celebrates the ‘Bold’ creativity moms exhibit and the ‘Bold’ moves moms make every day.

November is (you guessed it!) the ‘Bold’ issue. Our cover mom is equestrian superstar, Emily Esau. Emily grew up in Encinitas, lives in San Elijo Hills and is excited to be announcing her hunter/jumper business is on the move, moving into Olivenhain. Fitness guru, Lisa Druxman shares her best stroller moves. We get bold & beautiful tips from the founder of reVessel, Jessical Bell. Three local families pull together to produce a podcast called “The Davenport.” And creativity is bursting at The Forum Carlsbad. Local moms ‘Adore’ sharing their creative ventures.

Beyond creativity, we also know moms are an economic powerhouse.

In fact, according to “Forbes,” recent studies suggest moms make 85% of all household purchasing decisions and represent $2.4 trillion in annual spending power. Moms, more often than not, are the ones who decide what groceries go in the pantry, who will be the family dentist, where to go on vacation, what car is parked in the driveway and even the house attached to that driveway.

Moms create every day. We create families, communities, traditions, businesses, art and, more often than not, dinner at the end of the day. Moms are inherently creative.

On page 11 you’ll find the courage it took for Jessica Bell, founder of reVessel, to launch a global company. She shares with us her tips for living a bold and beautiful life.

1. Be bold in your resolve and in the world.

It is imperative for you to step up and define what is important to you. If you don’t step up, just know that others will.

2. Consume less. Create more. It’s impor-

tant for all of us to try to consume less from others and create more gifts to give the world.

Have fun being adventurous!

6. Build and embrace a network. It’s

important to have a network of mentors, sponsors and advisors. Remember to reciprocate. Build and embrace others.

7. Take care of your health. Health is far

easier to maintain than it is to recover once it has gotten off course.

8. Write down your core values. When

things get tough, our core values define what we stand for and how we respond.

They are written down and reflected upon regularly, not so much for when things are going great, but when we face certain difficulty.

3. Step boldly into your role as a creator.

You don’t have to know “the how,” but get clear on “the purpose” and surround yourself with people who amplify you and you will find your way.

4. Be willing to ask big questions. Big

and bold questions warrant big and bold answers. Go ahead; ask away!

What do you do when 90% of your business disappears overnight? You get creative and go collective!

Lynette Meyers, founder of Cyndi and Sofi Designs, and Cathy Hall, founder of Sweet Spot Toffee & Treats, were both happily running their respective business – both of which relied heavily on events and farmer’s markets – when COVID-19 hit and shut down their main sales channels.

Meyers, a longtime Carlsbad resident, started her custom event and card business in 2006, and garnered a reputation for beautiful holiday cards, wedding and party invitations, menus, custom party favors, and more.

MINDSET RESET

Shifting from Failure to Fabulous The lens through which we view the world is profoundly influenced by personal experiences, social and cultural influences, even our upbringing. This lens influences our boldest decisions and trickles down to how we manage small daily routines. It also influences how we view success and failure.

As mom entrepreneurs, you are tasked with the mundane to magical, daily. You know being a mom and a business woman isn’t always rainbows and sunshine. It’s gritty out there, Ladies!

And our mindset makes the biggest impact on our overall health, happiness and ultimate success.

When my women’s yoga clothing business didn’t reach the level of success I hoped for, it was time to boldly go where I hadn’t dared before: my subconscious. I recognized it was time to unbind from the beliefs around unworthiness, shame and fear of failure.

Years later, after many successful endeavors, I am honored to guide women through a course I developed for the SBDC and the Women’s Business Center. The course is designed to help you reset your mindset, build confidence and shift your perspective of failure. One of the exercises I guide women through is building a Failure Resume. Try this from home.

WHAT IT IS Like a regular resume, a failure resume chronicles your “failure” experiences, skills and lessons learned, and how you have applied these lessons in current situations, and the new outcome.

WHY IT WORKS Awareness is the great liberator. Once you become aware of the emotions and lessons around failure, you begin to live and work unbound to shame, reconnecting with your energy, passion and confidence.

HOW TO DO IT Write down the projects you consider failures. Next, jot down the justifications and reasons for the failure (not enough funding, time, energy, etc.). As you review these

experiences, pay attention to the emotions that arise and write those down as well. Lastly, dig deep for the lesson that may not be so obvious. By boldly exploring the lessons and distilling the gifts, you will unbind from your limits.

Failure isn’t a stop sign. It’s simply a sign indicating “limits reached,” meaning you’ve reached the edge of one or more of your limiting beliefs. Shifting this mindset is a bold act that will move you from feeling like a failure to feeling like the fabulous woman you truly are.

Perfectly Pumpkin

Pumpkin Loaf

Fill your home with the aroma of fall with warm slices of this Pumpkin Loaf dolloped with butter

Nonstick cooking spray 4 eggs 3 1/2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon nutmeg 1 teaspoon salt 2 sticks butter 2 cups sugar 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin puree 1 cup chocolate chips 1 cup walnuts, chopped Heat oven to 350 F. Prepare loaf and muffin pans with nonstick cooking spray.

In a bowl, whisk eggs. Set aside.

In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt together. Set aside.

In another bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add whisked eggs and mix until blended.

Alternately add flour mixture and pumpkin puree to egg mixture, beating until blended. Fold in chocolate chips and walnuts.

Pour batter into loaf and muffin pans. Bake 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Cool 10 minutes before removing from the pans.

Classic & Slow Cooked

Cranberry-Orange Pork Loin 1 1 14 1 3/4 1/8 3

tablespoon oil pork loin (4 pounds), tied at 1-inch intervals ounces cranberry sauce cup dried cranberries cup orange juice teaspoon cinnamon strips orange zest salt, to taste pepper, to taste

In skillet over medium heat, heat oil.

Sear pork loin on all sides.

In slow cooker, stir cranberry sauce, dried cranberries, orange juice, cinnamon and orange zest until combined.

Set pork loin in middle of sauce mixture and drizzle sauce over meat.

Cover and cook on low 4 hours, or until meat reaches 140145 F. Transfer pork to cutting board. Remove twine.

Whether you’re looking for a family meal or a dish to feed a different type of crowd, taking advantage of kitchen tools like your slow cooker can help take the effort out of preparation.

Cranberry-Orange Pork Loin is a classic dish that’s perfect for a fall family meal or entertaining friends.

Strain cranberries from slow cooker; set aside. Pour strained liquid into skillet. Add salt and pepper, to taste.

Simmer 7-8 minutes.

Spoon cranberries and sauce over pork loin.

cup apple cider vinegar tablespoons olive oil tablespoon lemon juice teaspoon honey teaspoon Dijon mustard cups red quinoa, rinsed cups vegetable broth teaspoon canola oil white onion, sliced cups baby kale red skinned apple, chopped cups cooked chicken, chopped teaspoon salt teaspoon pepper

To make dressing: In bowl, whisk vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, honey and Dijon mustard until well combined. Set aside.

In a saucepan, bring quinoa and broth to boil. Simmer, covered, 12-15 minutes, or until broth has been absorbed.

Cool completely.

In a medium skillet, heat canola oil over medium-high heat. Saute onion 3-5 minutes, or until softened and translucent. Remove from heat; cool completely.

In a large bowl, toss onion, kale, apple, chicken, salt and pepper with dressing. Stir in cooled quinoa.

Soars to Success MOMSTOWN • NOV 2020

Equestrian and competitor, Emily Esau Williams is riding high these days. Her business is expanding and she is training and riding a talented horse named Dandy. “He’s a competitor. He wants to win as much as I do.” Emily and her partner, Dandy, are winning. They’re clearing five-foot jumps and challenging their competitors with grit, grace and style.

Emily, owner of EE Show Stable, competes at the Grand Prix level, which is the highest national level for hunter/jumpers. Emily also trains horses and gives riding lessons to junior and amateur riders. In fact, just before we went to press, Emily and her business partner, Dayle Fischer, announced they are opening their barn doors on new soil. EE Show Stable is relocating to Dove Hollow in Olivenhain. Emily has 35 horses in training and a clientele of about 70% kids and 30% adults. The new barn, Emily says, will give her and Dayle the room needed to expand their business.

Surrounded by horses, Emily grew up in Encinitas on her family’s ranch. Her parents, Chuck and Lindy Esau, were both professionals in the equestrian world. After attending the University of San Diego, Emily said she discovered her love of teaching riders from her dad. Today, Emily keeps a firm grip on the reins of the family legacy while building her own equestrian program. Emily, her husband, Nick Williams and son, Wyatt, call San Elijo Hills home.

“We love living here. We take Wyatt to school in the morning (when we’re not in quarantine), and we visit with the other moms and families. It’s a great community. Then, I hop in the truck and head to the barn. I can be at work in minutes.”

Emily says it’s a good life. “I’m so lucky. Every day I get to combine two things I love — riding and teaching.” Emily, however, confesses it hasn’t always been easy. When asked what has been her boldest move in business, she replied, “Starting! Growing up riding horses in Encinitas and Rancho Santa Fe introduced me to a lot of people. I had a great resume and a network. I could have gone anywhere in the world to work for someone else. But choosing to start my own business — that was the boldest thing I’ve ever done.” Emily says the first 10 years were really hard. Getting a business off the ground is challenging. It’s that grit, however, that Emily tapped into and, with the grace of a professional and the heart of a loving mom and wife, continues building a world class equestrian business and her own family legacy.

Mom—the therapist in the house From the crossroads to the couch, Jamie Pyatt, shares the journey of bringing her life’s experiences to “The Davenport,” a podcast that blends therapy, life coaching and entertainment.

In Jamie’s words...

For most of us, there have been times when we arrive at an intersection in life and need to make a life-altering decision. I arrived at those crossroads in my late twenties.

I had to decide if I would accept a job at the Drug Enforcement Agency, finish graduate school or take a different road and apply to law school. Turns out, sometimes the best decision is to go boldly in a completely different direction. I decided MOMSTOWN • NOV 2020

to become a licensed clinical social worker instead. I never looked back. Helping children and families over the years has been extremely rewarding.

After my daughter was born, we moved to the North County and I decided to open my private practice. We also became close friends with our neighbors, the Balogh and Strang families. We would often joke about starting a podcast. Then COVID hit. We decided, why not?

Guy Balogh, a professional life coach, and I decided that we had something unique to bring to the podcast world. Erin Balogh and Monica Strang work as our pro-

ducers and editors. It has been such a fun project to work on and develop and to see it come to life!

The Davenport (AKA “couch” in Nebraskan) is a place where we hope people can sit and feel relaxed, comforted, enlightened and entertained. We offer listeners tools and insight that might be helpful in improving little aspects of their daily lives.

WARM UP (3 - 5 MINUTES)

STROLLER ROW (2 MINUTES)

Start with an easy walk, gradually warming up your body and your muscles. The most common postural dysfunction when pushing a stroller is hunching forward, so be sure to keep your shoulders down and back throughout your walk. Don’t wait for the abs portion of the workout to draw in your belly button and engage that core!

The movements of motherhood pull us forward. So, we want to focus on our back side.

For this exercise, have the baby facing downhill.

Let the stroller roll forward and then use upper back muscles to row it back in towards you. You are standing with legs about hips width apart.

Engage your core and row, row row! . Do about 3 sets of about 10 – 15 repetitions.

STROLLER SQUAT (2 MINUTES)

LUNGE WALKING (2 MINUTES)

The squat is one of the best exercises for the lower body. Stand behind your stroller with the brake off, hands about shoulder width apart on the handlebars. Your feet and knees should face forward with your legs about hips width apart. Sit your bottom way back, and put your weight in your heels. Push your stroller out in front of you as you squat down, and pull it back in as you pull yourself up to a standing position.

When squatting back, keep your spine long and strong, with your upper body only slightly tilted forward. A common mistake during this exercise is to bend too much from the upper body, when it should be the lower body that is reaching back. For all of the strength “stations”, do 3 sets of approximately 10 – 15 repetitions.

The lunge is by far one of the most effective exercises a mom can do to tone and strengthen her lower body. It’s a compound exercise, which basically means it works a lot of muscles in just one move! A good lunge will effectively work your quadriceps (front of your thighs), hamstrings (back of your thighs) and gluteus maximus (your bottom). This exercise will be part of your walk. Lunge walk by taking really long strides and lowering your upper body down until your front thigh is almost parallel to the ground. Your front knee should not go farther forward than your toes. Lower your body slowly and squeeze your thighs and glutes as you come back up.

Between each exercise, go for a STROLLER WALK (3 MINUTES) Walk for 30 seconds as hard and fast as you can, then recover by slowing your pace a little for 30 seconds. Repeat this sequence until your time is up. Try to walk towards a hill for the next exercise.

STROLLER WALK (3 MINUTES) Head back to a hill.

Stroller Bicep Curl (2 MINUTES) For this exercise, the break is off and the baby is facing downhill. Hold stroller with palms facing up. Just like we did with the row, let the stroller roll forward. Then use your biceps to pull the

stroller back in towards you. Even when doing an arm movement, you want to keep your abs engaged. Want to make it harder. Do one hand at a time. Just make sure that you always have your safety strap on!

▪ Always use a safety strap with a stroller.

STROLLER CRUNCH (2 MINUTES)

▪ Always keep your stroller a hand’s reach away from you if you’re working out beside your stroller.

Put your break on and lay a blanket in front of your stroller. Lay down directly in front of your stroller with your feet on either side of the wheel. With hands lightly behind your head, draw your belly button in and contract your abdominals, bring your shoulder blades a few inches off the ground. Exhale as you come up and inhale as you come down. Hold at the top of the movement for a moment, without pulling on your head. Your starting position should be where the abs start to engage; not at rest.

Safety is number one. Always be careful of cars and the environment when working out with your baby.

▪ We recommend that you wait at least six weeks after giving birth before starting this or any other kind of workout. Make sure to get your doctor’s clearance before starting any exercise program.

▪ Always make sure the stroller is stable. Do not ever hang on a stroller. Do not attach exercise tubing to the stroller.

STRETCH (5 MINUTES) Take time to stretch all the body parts we worked today. This is a great time to pull your baby out of the stroller and stretch next to her! You’ve now finished a workout comprised of strength, cardiovascular and flexi-bility exercises, and you’ve gotten to do it while spending quality time with your baby. “We must embrace pain and burn it as fuel for our journey” — Kenji Miyazawa (1896-1933) The death of a child is the deepest pain a parent could possibly endure. Olivenhain parents Marcella and Matt Johnson know that pain. In 1999, their fourth child, their son George, passed away on the same day he was born.

Upon George’s passing, Marcella experienced Takotsubo cardiomyopathy or ‘Broken Heart Syndrome.’ Marcella learned that holding onto a weighted object could possibly ease her pain. It worked.

She thought if it worked for her it might help other grieving parents. In an effort to honor George, and to help ease the suffering of others, Marcella founded The Comfort Cub, a non-profit organization that delivers weighted teddy bears to victims of grief, trauma and depression.

The Comfort Cub has delivered more than 20,000 cubs and touched more than 60,000 lives. Marcella says, “As soon as we started to realize the science behind the weight of The Comfort Cub and how deep touch pressure can help to reduce anxiety and stress we started branching out into different areas. Our first outreach was to the victim's families of Sandy Hook. The cubs were so well received that the school contacted us for more Comfort Cubs for their teachers who had lost students and for the parents of the two young teachers who were also killed.”

The Comfort Cub partners with the San Diego Police Department, Palomar Hospital and the San Diego District Attorney’s office to help victims experiencing trauma. The cubs are also used at several elementary, middle, and high schools in the counseling and nurse’s offices.

The Comfort Cub is also receiving more requests due to the isolation, loneliness, and depression brought on by COVID-19.

Although scary at first, it gave me immense purpose and satisfaction helping families navigate through one of the most complex and chaotic times in their lives.

Here are the five most common mistakes I see people make when considering care options: 1. FOLLOWING A FRIEND — Taking a friend or neighbor’s recommendation for restaurants is fine — it’s a terrible idea for senior care. We wouldn’t take the same medication as a friend because it works for them — the same holds true for assisted living and memory care. One size does not fit all. Communities also change when staff changes.

2. UNDERESTIMATING YOUR NEEDS — Families downplay or are in denial of the level of care their loved one needs, or that it is no longer safe to stay home.

3. WAITING TOO LONG — Families don’t act soon enough and a parent injures themselves.

Falls are the #1 risk that creates a decline in quality of life and often leads to an earlier death.

4. JUDGING A COMMUNITY BY ITS LOOKS Don’t choose a community based on how nice the décor is and put the quality or appropriateness of care in second place.

Ken, how long have you been in the mortgage industry and what makes your service unique?

A: I’ve been in the mortgage industry for more than 27 years.

We specialize in Jumbo loans to $10 million, government loans, and conventional loans. Our longstanding relationships with more than 100 funding sources enable us to provide preferred rates and pricing on mortgage products that many other lenders don’t have access to.

What is your take on these new record-low rates for mortgages?

A: With the average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage at 3.18% this

past week, according to Freddie Mac, it’s the lowest level in nearly 50 years. Rates are expected to stay near these low levels for at least the rest of 2020.

What does this mean for a buyer of a home that costs $600K?

A: Interest rates are hovering near all-time lows, and for qualified borrowers in San Diego County, borrowing less than $701,000, should get optimal rates in the low 3’s.

How does it look for a buyer in the $900K or $2 million range?

A: I’m able to close creative financing to help borrowers pur-

chase when they otherwise could not. I do cross collateral loans to help buyers purchase non-contingent without having to sell their current residence. I fund asset depletion loans using assets to create income where other lenders cannot. We have really great technology that enables us to frequently close loans in two weeks or less at market leading rates and terms.

The great products, rates and experience enable me to close transactions and provide options for buyers that might not otherwise be able to purchase a home.

What kind of paperwork do you need to help a potential client?

A: It is really not too much to compile. I always request 2 years

tax returns and W-2s, 2 months of bank statements, and 2 recent pay stubs. If a buyer is self-employed, I will also need 2 years business tax returns and K-1s or 1099s. I always set up a secure link so they can just drag and drop to make it quick and easy.

Do you think these historically low rates could go even lower?

A: It’s possible. My best advice is to lock in a historically low

rate now while you can. If rates go up there is nothing you can do. Rates are incredibly low. Take advantage of it while you can!

There are great loans that are fixed for 3, 5, 7, and 10 years all with rates in the mid to high 3’s. There are also options to amortize over 30 or 40 years and interest only options for lower payments and higher cash flow.
