Welcome to MomsTown! We’re excited to bring MomsTown to our North County neighborhoods

MomsTown is committed to shining a light on mom creators, moms creating good in the world with their talents and hearts. Along the way, we’ll be sharing inspirational tips and a few quick-and-easy recipes the entire family will enjoy.

“How Mom Made It!” is the cover story of each edition and also the title of MomsTown's signature podcast, launching later this summer. This issue’s cover mom is pickleball champion, pickleball historian and pickleball hallof-famer, Jennifer Lucore. Pickleball is sweeping the nation and Jennifer, a local North County mom, has been a top competitor in the sport for more than a decade. You’ll learn more about Jennifer on pages 12 and 13.

On page six, we take a look at how to help our kids improve their mental health. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Dr. Carol Ray is a licensed Clinical Psychotherapist, specializing in teens and young adults. The pressures on our kids today are immense. We asked Dr. Carol for some strategies to help us support our kids to feel better about themselves and confident about their futures.

In addition to supporting our younger family members, we’re also turning to Resilient Yoga Therapist, Tina van Hamersveld, for some added advice on helping us improve our moods. She gives us four tips for helping to alleviate pain and increase joy. Tina’s Tips are on page seven.

If the answer to improving your quality of life involves finding a new job, then you’re in luck. Marketable Mama founder, Emily Stark, is also joining us this month to share how devoting 15-20 minutes a day can make a big difference in improving your work life.

From work to play, check out an amazing lineup of live music at Del Mar Plaza (page 5). Listening to live music is not only a great idea for date night, it’s also scientifically proven to enhance your mood, increase joy and improve our creativity and cognitive abilities; a great way to spend the evening!

MomsTown is also full of Silver Linings (literally)! Page 22 features Silver Linings founder, Jami Shapiro. She’s helping families take the stress out of significant life transitions and getting organized.

Finally, we’d like to extend a warm welcome to our cover sponsor, La Costa Glen. From grandchildren to grandparents, MomsTown supports the entire family and is grateful to work with an organization dedicated to keeping families close.

Teen? my stressed-out

Our kids are dealing with stress in their daily lives including academic pressures and social problems such as bullying or friendship drama, while simultaneously juggling their full schedules and trying to get everything done. Providing support gets more complicated during the middle school and teen years because your child is developing their independence and stronger sense of identity. This is a big transition for parents as they navigate allowing their child to distance themselves while still being there for them emotionally when they are struggling.

SIMPLE PLACES TO START

KNOW THE STATISTICS

Over 90% of the things we worry about never happen!

As Mark Twain said, “I've lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”

NAME IT TO TAME IT!

Help your teen label their emotions or identify what is happening in the moment. For example, offer, “You’re feeling overwhelmed and burned out. Part of you wants to avoid doing your assignments altogether.” Putting words to their big emotions can give them perspective and help them feel like they are understood.

PERSONIFY THE ANXIETY LIAR

Anxiety often sounds like your voice, but it can help your child to give it an image. This helps with emotionally distancing from the thoughts and separates them from the anxious voice. I tell my clients the “Anxiety Liar” is always going to talk and talk. It loops the same messages over and over, telling you the worst case scenario or saying things as if they are absolutely true, when they are not. One client drew her Anxiety Liar as a monster whose nose grew as he talked! She listed all the messages the “anxiety guy” said and she evaluated those statements. Is that true? Is it accurate? What can you say to yourself instead? Challenging automatic thoughts and coming up with statements to counterbalance them is a skill.

GETTING MORE TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER

ACTIVELY LISTEN & RELFECT THEIR EXPERIENCE

Paraphrasing their experience is key. When your child comes home and says, “I failed a test. I’m so stupid! I’ll never get into college!” Resist the urge to jump in and make them feel better. (“WHAT? You’re not stupid! You are SO smart!”) Instead, you can start with mirroring back their experience. You might say, “Whoa, that grade really shook you up and rattled your confidence.” Allowing them to process their feelings and not immediately talking them out of their experience isn’t easy, but it can help them work through strong emotions. Be the “calm

captain of the ship” and an “anchor during their emotional storm.” Do your best to listen 70 percent of the time and allow your child to offload their feelings. Maintain a calm demeanor and respond in a soothing voice. Conveying your support and expressing your trust in their ability to handle the situation can be very comforting.

WHAT THINGS RELAX YOU?

Your teen might like doing art, listening to relaxing music, or hanging out with a friend. Help your child identify activities that are calming and encourage ways to sprinkle in downtime during their week.

As a licensed Clinical Psychotherapist with over 20 years of experience, I am dedicated to helping you make positive, lasting changes in your personal life and your relationships. Trust and collaboration are the foundation of a successful therapeutic relationship. Together we will explore your feelings and thought patterns and focus on what you would like to change in your life. I provide a nurturing, empathetic and confidential environment. My primary goals as a therapist are to work collaboratively with you to determine treatment objectives, to do everything I can to help you achieve these objectives and to empower you to know and trust your own inner strengths.

Specializing in teen and young adults is my passion! As a teen, I was diagnosed with depression and therapy was tremendously helpful through that difficult time. The adjustment to college was also more challenging than I anticipated. Academic pressures, break-ups and living away from home was a lot to manage. Now, helping clients during this phase of life is my calling.

I invite you to call me for a complimentary phone consultation. I would be happy to discuss treatment options and how we might work together.

tips for

FINDING BALANCE & RELIEF:

Yoga Therapy for Women's Health & Healing

Are you one of the many women feeling frustrated with your body? Perhaps you're struggling with chronic pain that just won't go away, despite seeking help from various doctors and specialists

You may be surprised to learn that there's a natural, science-based method of healing that can help. It's called Yoga Therapy, and as a Yoga Therapist and Personal Trainer, I've seen firsthand how it can reduce pain and improve quality of life. If you've never heard of yoga therapy or are curious about how it works, keep reading to learn more.

Yoga Therapy is a natural and holistic approach to healing that uses the principles and practices of yoga to reduce pain and suffering, improve mobility and flexibility, and enhance overall physical and mental well-being. Unlike traditional medical treatments that often focus solely on symptom relief, yoga therapy treats the whole person as a system, addressing the root causes of health issues and promoting optimal functioning of the body and mind. With that in mind, here are four simple tips to help you start incorporating yoga therapy into your daily life.

1. MOVE YOUR BODY EVERY DAY Regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. You can incorporate movement into your daily routine in various ways, such as going for a walk during your lunch break. Movement helps increase blood flow, boost mood, and reduce stress, making it an essential aspect of living a healthy and happy life.

2. PRACTICE MINDFUL BREATHING Breathing is a powerful tool that can instantly calm your mind and body. Take a few moments throughout the day to practice mindful breathing. Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take slow, deep breaths. Inhale deeply through your nose, and exhale fully through your mouth. Focus on your breath, and let go of any tension

or stress with each exhale. Mindful breathing can help reduce stress, increase mental clarity, and promote relaxation.

3. STRETCH YOUR BODY

Stretching is an important part of maintaining flexibility and preventing muscle tension. Incorporate simple stretches into your daily routine. For example, you can do gentle neck rolls, shoulder rolls, or ankle circles while sitting at your desk or watching T.V. Stretching helps improve flexibility, releases muscle tension, and promotes relaxation.

4. NOURISH YOUR BODY

Eating a healthy and balanced diet is crucial for overall wellness. Yoga therapy emphasizes the importance of mindful eating, which involves paying attention to your body's hunger and fullness cues, eating slowly, and choosing whole, nutrient-rich foods. Incorporate wholesome foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, into your diet to support your physical health and energy levels.

If you're seeking ways to address chronic pain or improve your health and fitness, Resilient Yoga Therapeutics offers natural and sciencebased healing through yoga. My approach is tailored to your individual needs, focusing on reducing pain, alleviating stress, improving mobility and flexibility, and enhancing overall well-being. What Women Need to Know About Stroke Risks

It may not be widely known that women face unique risk factors for stroke throughout their lifetime. Things like pregnancy, preeclampsia and chronic stress can increase the risk for high blood pressure, a leading cause of stroke. Start managing your stroke risk with tips from the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association.

MONITOR YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE

The first step you can take in reducing your risk for stroke is knowing your blood pressure and keeping it in a healthy range. High blood pressure is the No. 1 preventable cause of stroke, according to the American Heart Association.

PLAN FOR PREGNANCY

In the United States, high blood pressure during pregnancy is becoming more common, according to the CDC, and medical conditions including preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and blood clots during pregnancy all increase stroke risk during and immediately following a pregnancy.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Some stress is unavoidable but constant stress is not healthy. Chronic or constant stress may lead to high blood pressure and other unhealthy behavior choices, which can increase risk for stroke.

KNOW THE WARNING SIGNS

A stroke can happen to anyone at any point in life. Immediate treatment may help minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.

If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get to a hospital immediately. Check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared.

Talk to your doctor about ways to improve your well-being and help prevent stroke.

1. If you could give any advice to your 18-year-old self, what would it be?

I would tell my 18-year-old to not rush into anything, you are so young and your life is just getting started! I wish I didn’t try to rush through high school thinking that I wanted to get a big girl job. Enjoy the little moments!

2. What’s a book that you’ve read, at any point in your life, that’s influenced you and/or impacted your life? How so?

The 12 Marriage Safeguards, by Samuel and Katie Deuth, the lead pastors at my church In Carlsbad; Awaken.

3. If you could pick anyone to serve as your mentor and/or business coach, who would it be?

The mentor I would choose would be Asha Bailey. She is a phenomenal couples photographer and I would love to be a second shooter for her or get helpful hints because she is so talented behind the camera.

4. What did you want to be when you grew up?

When I was young I wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up. I still love animals but I realized could never do the things the job of a vet demands!

5. What’s your favorite way to healthily relieve stress?

My favorite way to destress in a healthy way is by going to the gym for a workout or taking my little boys for a walk on the beach and to play with them in the sand and watch the waves.

1. If you could give any advice to your 18-year-old self, what would it be?

Being a mom to an almost 18-year-old, I find myself reflecting a lot these days! I would definitely say not to focus so much on how you’re going to make lots of money but to find a career doing something that you love and that satisfies you. Life is too short to waste on a job that’s unpleasant!

2. What’s a book that you’ve read, at any point in your life, that’s influenced you and/or impacted your life? How so?

One book I highly recommend is The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Its bite-sized chapters with exciting twists and turns that got me hooked from the start! The author not only made me feel deeply for the main character but also caused me to reflect upon my own life choices and to really put some thought into my future.

3. If you could pick anyone to serve as your mentor and/or business coach, who would it be?

I would love to be able to spend some one-on-one time with Barbara Corcoran (Shark Tank). She is such an incredible inspiration. She took out a small loan to start her own business and now has a real estate company worth billions

4. What did you want to be when you grew up?

I was always passionate about nature and finding ways to conserve. Marine biology was on my list and you can definitely see that reflected in my creations.

5. What’s your favorite way to healthily relieve stress?

Running a small business can be very stressful at times! I deal with it by listening to music, reading a good book with a fragrant candle, and deep breathing. Painting/creating can be very therapeutic as well.

FOR MOMS

Have you thought about franchising? It's not as expensive as you think.

THERE ARE THREE STRUCTURES TO CONSIDER:

PASSIVE INCOME

Absentee Investor

Franchisee acts as an “investor.” Corporate will set up and manage the business for the Franchisee. This is a hands-off approach that allows you to have freedom.

SEMI-OWNER

Part-time

Franchisees keep their full-time job and hire a manager to oversee the dayto-day tasks of the franchise. Your job is to manage the manager and the finances of the business.

OWNER/OPERATOR

Full-time

Franchisees focus on hiring and managing the staff. You will need to market locally to attract clients, manage the staff, and the finances of the business and day-to-day operations.

TWO EXAMPLES of popular franchises for moms:

MELINDA STAAB FROM LIKES TO LEADS marketing matters

Choosing the right social media platform for your small business

Social media has become a primary marketing tool for entrepreneurs and small business owners (SBOs). With millions of daily active users and limitless opportunities for engagement, social media platforms provide effective, low-cost marketing opportunities to promote products and services, connect with customers, and build brand loyalty.

FACEBOOK – 2.8 billion users

HERE ARE SOME OF THE TOP SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS FOR SBOS, AND EXAMPLES OF BUSINESS TYPES WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM EACH:

INSTAGRAM – 2.3 billion users

Instagram is a great platform for visual content and has a high level of engagement. SBOs can showcase their products and services through photos and videos, and the platform's "shoppable" posts allow businesses to link directly to their online stores. Instagram also offers a variety of features such as Instagram Reels and Instagram Stories, which can help businesses reach a wider audience.

IDEAL FOR: artists, food/restaurants, travel/photographers, fitness & wellness

Facebook is the most popular social media platform and provides a variety of easy-to-use marketing tools for businesses. Facebook Business Pages offers tools to promote products and services, including targeted advertising campaigns, allowing businesses to reach their “Ideal Customer Avatar” (ICA) and track campaign success. Facebook Groups allow businesses to connect with customers and build a community around their brand.

IDEAL FOR: retail, service-based, personal brands, community builders

PINTEREST – 450 million users

Pinterest is a visual platform that can help SBOs showcase their products and services through “pins.” Pinterest's "Buyable Pins" allow businesses to sell products directly on the platform, and the platform's search function allows businesses to reach potential customers looking for specific products or services. Once a hub for DIY and crafty ideas, businesses of all sizes and in all industries now use the platform to reach their market.

IDEAL FOR: retail, consultants, home décor, health & beauty, travel & events planning.

LINKEDIN – 900 million users

LinkedIn is a professional networking platform that helps entrepreneurs connect with potential customers and other business owners and professionals. LinkedIn Groups allow individuals to connect with other professionals in their industry. LinkedIn is a great platform to network, learn from other SBOs and share your expertise.

IDEAL FOR: B2B service providers, freelancers, consultants or anyone looking to expand their professional network.

TIK TOK – 1.5 billion users

TikTok is a video-sharing app that has rapidly grown in popularity, particularly with younger generations. The app can help SBOs showcase their products and services with creative and entertaining short-form videos.

TikTok's "Hashtag Challenges" can

also help businesses increase their visibility, while partnering with Tik Tok influencers can expand your brand’s reach to their loyal followers.

IDEAL FOR: beauty, fashion, fitness, food & beverage or anything that appeals to a younger audience.

There are several other popular social media platforms that can be explored, but the above are some of the top platforms used by SBOs today. Rather than trying to juggle all at once, first determine which platform(s) your ICA) uses the most. Then develop, and stick to, a consistent social strategy and content calendar for 4-6 months before determining if you’ll need/want to engage on additional platforms. It’s better to have a strong brand and following on 1-2 platforms than a weak presence on 10.

HOW MOM MADE IT! playing pickleball

PICKLEBALL! IF YOU DON’T PLAY, YOU PROBABLY KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES. ACCORDING TO THE SPORTS & FITNESS INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION, IT’S THE FASTEST GROWING SPORT THREE YEARS IN A ROW WITH MORE THAN 36-MILLION PLAYERS IN THE UNITED STATES.

CALIFORNIA APPARENTLY HAS THE MOST PLAYERS AND LOCALLY, WE HAVE MANY OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE NATION.

IN THIS MONTH’S HOW MOM MADE IT! COVER STORY, WE'RE SHINING A LIGHT ON A LOCAL MOM WHO IS A PICKLEBALL CHAMPION, PICKLEBALL HISTORIAN AND PICKLEBALL HALL-OF-FAMER. HER NAME IS JENNIFER LUCORE.

MOMSTOWN:

Tell us about Jennifer Lucore!

JENNIFER: I am a local mom and I grew up in North San Diego County, graduated from Fallbrook Union High, and currently live in Oceanside with my husband, a retired division chief of North County Fire Department.

I love being a mom, I love pickleball, I love traveling and having fun wherever I go! So, you can see that pickleball plays perfectly into what I love a one-stop shop. I’ve been playing for 15 years, and in that time have earned a collection of titles and am currently involved in:

► Pickleball Hall of Fame inductee

► Co-author with my mom: History of Pickleball – More Than 50 Years of Fun!

► Board of Director at Naples, Florida Pickleball Center (Pickleball capital of the world with 66 permanent courts)

►USA Pickleball Ambassador at Large (since June 2015)

► Pickleball Magazine – Board Member and Around the Post column co-contributor

► USA Pickleball Historian. Assisting the media with their research of pickleball history (got to make sure they get it right! and yes, the sport was named after the dog Pickles)

► Board of Director for the newly a created team Naples JBB United, part of the National Pickleball League.

Through my involvement in pickleball, both as a player and contributor to the sports growth, I’ve been invited to teach, travel and meet new friends throughout the USA and internationally in Canada, the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Japan, Mexico, The Netherlands, UK, Spain (3 trips), Singapore, and Thailand. This year, I head back to Madrid, Spain to teach pickleball on an 8-day adventure.

I never thought that pickleball would bring me and my family opportunities to travel the world. My kids, now age 27 and 30 are still asking, “Mom, where are you going now, can I come?” Also, these last few decades I have spent more time with my parents because they, too, were traveling to tournaments to compete, so we would cheer each other on. #priceless.

MOMSTOWN: Pickleball is sweeping the nation. It’s truly phenomenal how many people are playing. However, pickleball is not new to you. When and how did you get started?

JENNIFER: I played high school and college tennis, then I got married and started a family. I had two daughters so there was no time for social tennis until my mid 30s when my time freed up a bit. Then in my mid-40s the kids were still home but busy with their own activities so HELLOOOO pickleball. My parents have been playing pickleball since the 1990s so I always heard of the sport with the funny name, yet only played with the family. Then in my early forties I gave a pickleball tournament a try and was hooked.

The following year my doubles partner (Alex Hamner, a mom from Carlsbad) and I won USA Pickleball Nationals Open Doubles which further cemented my love of the game and I began my quest to support and grow the sport. That early success put me in a position to travel Internationally, help to build the

sport, teach and spread the fun of the game wherever I went. Also, my early success earned me the distinction of being the very first sponsored pickleball player. I was sponsored by Pickle-Ball Inc. who was the first paddle and ball manufacturer and was started by one of the creators and founders of the sport, Barney McCallum.

MOMSTOWN: What is it about pickleball that brings you the greatest joy?

JENNIFER: The fun. The sport is just flat out fun! Besides the long list of positives which includes the social aspect and the great people

you meet it keeps you healthy. In fact, I could write a book on the health aspects of the game and how it has truly saved lives.

MOMSTOWN: Pickleball is more than a hobby for you; what role does pickleball play in your life?

JENNIFER: Although my family comes first, my life really revolves around pickleball. I’m not playing tournaments as much but I make up for it with my involvement in supporting the growth of the sport. I respond to inquiries on historical aspects of the sport, update the book as more history evolves, teach and connect inquiries with

the appropriate people. I also stay in contact with the hundreds, if not, thousands of people I’ve met playing and teaching pickleball. I’m not sure how, but I’ve become an approachable source for pickleball inquiries and as a result, my inbox is always full but, that’s part of the fun!

MOMSTOWN: What do you think when you see so many people (especially moms) picking up the sport?

JENNIFER: Seeing moms out there playing makes me so happy! Knowing what it did for me and how it can fill a much-needed void for moms who either need a little free time or whose kids have grown and don’t require so much attention. It gets you out of the house, burns some energy, helps with keeping you fit and socializing which, can be the most important part for some. There really is no downside.

MOMSTOWN: What advice do you have for anyone who hasn’t yet played?

JENNIFER: There’s no reason not to give it a try. Nearly all courts/clubs have ambassadors who will help get you started by showing you around, explaining how open play works and even provide some basic instruction. Open play allows anyone to join the action and immediately be included. There are courts all over San Diego County just waiting for you to join the fun. Whether local or traveling you can always check the website Places to Play: places2play.org

MOMSTOWN: Your enthusiasm is both inspiring and motivating. Beyond the pickleball court, what advice do you have to help people follow their passions and create a life that gets them excited to get up in the morning?

JENNIFER: Whether its pickleball or another hobby it’s important to feel connected to something. Because of the social and inclusion aspects of pickleball it’s my feeling that anyone who is struggling with loneliness could find happiness on the court.

Pickleball gets people excited. It gets them off the couch, out of the house and ready to compete, maybe even some friendly trash talking, and when it’s all over the fun continues as we’re off to grab food or drinks with our opponents then repeat the next day.

MOMSTOWN: How can readers learn more about pickleball and follow you on social media?

JENNIFER: To learn more about pickleball, instructional tips, a calendar of camps/retreats and my travels go to:

tips for the

SOLO TRAVELER

Whether you’re a lone wolf at heart or looking to broaden your sense of independence, traveling solo can be a richly empowering and satisfying experience.

Setting out on your own has many practical advantages. You’re not worrying about accommodating another’s schedule, interest or needs, and you’re free to decide what you want to do and when. Solo travel also elicits some mental and emotional benefits, as you experience a unique sense of freedom, liberation and self-sufficiency.

If you’re considering a solo journey, consider these tips from the book “101+ Tips for Solo Women Travelers,” which is offered by Overseas Adventure Travel in free digital and print editions.

1. MAKE SURE YOUR PASSPORT IS UPDATED Many countries now require your passport to be valid for six months after your return to the United States. If you don’t have a passport, or need to renew one, apply for one as soon as possible. Ideally you should have your application in six months before you depart.

2. LOOK FOR TRIPS WITH NO SINGLE SUPPLEMENT Often, quoted rates are “per person, based on double occupancy.” This is because travel hosts know they can make more from a couple traveling than an individual. You can avoid paying a single supplement premium by being willing to match with a roommate or traveling with a tour company or cruise line with free or low-cost single supplement fees.

3. USE THE ATM As an affordable and convenient way to get cash, you can avoid wasting time in line at a bank or currency exchange bureau by visiting an ATM. While you’ll likely incur a fee for using an ATM that’s not part of your bank, it is often less than the commission you’d pay at an exchange bureau.

Let's get glowing for great-looking summer skin!

4. DOWNLOAD ENTERTAINMENT BEFORE YOU LEAVE When traveling, Wi-Fi can be expensive, slow or just not available. Before you leave, download music, e-books, podcasts, favorite tv shows or movies to enjoy when you're en route or during down time.

5. JOIN GROUP TOURS Once you reach your destination, you may enjoy joining small groups for excursions or to explore local cuisine. Or you can make your entire journey a group experience. A small group adventure with Overseas Adventure Travel has many benefits, and built-in dining companions is just one of them.

6. TAKE PRECAUTIONS IN YOUR HOTEL ROOM When you check in, ask the receptionist to write your room number down instead of announcing it so everyone can hear. Make sure your room’s locks work on both the door into the hallway and the balcony. Never let any repair person or staff member into your room without confirming with the front desk first. Bring a rubber doorstop, which makes a hotel room door nearly impossible to open. Finally, have an exit plan: Know where the nearest exit is located and the route from your room.

7. MAKE NEW FRIENDS For some, making friends seems to happen naturally while traveling alone by chatting with strangers at a neighboring restaurant table or striking up a conversation while waiting in line at a store. If those situations don’t occur naturally, there are useful apps that can connect you with local people as well as fellow travelers.

As designers, we often get this question when it comes to kitchen countertops, ”Which is better - quartz or quartzite?”. It can be very perplexing if you are not informed. Hiring professionals, such as interior designers, can help educate and steer you toward the perfect countertop for your home. However, If you are managing your own remodel it helps to know about the products prior to heading out to the slab yard.

Two of the most popular surfaces we use with our clients are Quartzite and Quartz.. The names are a little deceiving as they sound the same and often are confused with one another. Quartzite is a natural stone while Quartz is a man-made material. Both are gorgeous and offer unique qualities specific to various needs. When choosing between the two you must consider style, practicality, and longevity. Following is a breakdown that will give you more insight into making the right choice for your home.

WHAT IS QUARTZITE?

Quartzite is a natural product formed when quartz

Quartzite or Quartz

WHICH SHOULD YOU USE IN YOUR KITCHEN?

sandstone is exposed to high temperatures and pressure. It comes from deep within the earth and is extracted in blocks by quarrying. When heated, individual quartz pieces recrystallize adding beautiful sparkly accents.

PROS:

Quartzite is a natural stone. Each slab is one-of-a-kind. No need to worry about a pattern repeat when using multiple slabs for your counters. Many clients fall in love with the natural veining and uniqueness of quartzite. There is nothing like the beauty of Mother Nature’s work. Quartzite is also a very durable material. On the Mohs scale of hardness (from 1 to 10, with 10 being the hardest) it is a 7. In comparison, granite on the same scale is a 6-6.5.

CONS:

The biggest con to quartzite is etching (surface damage). Be careful to use cutting boards with this natural stone. Quartzite also requires annual sealing as it is a naturally porous material. Acidic substances like lemon juice, ketchup, etc. can also cause surface damage if the stone is

not sealed properly. If etching does occur, a stone resurfacing company can repair it. Another con is that quartzite is typically more expensive than quartz per slab. It will also cost more to fabricate as it is a tougher material to work with.

WHAT IS QUARTZ?

Quartz is engineered with the same quartz crystals found in quartzite, but a man-made process binds the crystal with resins, pigments, and other materials such as bits of glass. (MSI Stone Surfaces).

PROS:

Quartz is very durable and non-porous. It is resistant to chipping, scratching and bacteria and virtually needs no maintenance. Since it’s manmade, quartz comes in a wide variety of colors and designs. It typically is more cost-efficient than natural stone. Quartz may be the ideal choice if you have kids that like to use your countertops for arts and crafts, or if you are susceptible to spilling red wine ;)

CONS:

You cannot put hot pots or pans on quartz. Excessive heat can damage the resin which melts when in direct contact with heat. Quartz cannot be used outdoors. It can discolor and fade with direct sunlight. Another con to consider is the pattern. Unlike natural stone, the

design on quartz is a pattern that is repeated through all its batches. One or two styles may offer a book-match option, but you still only have two patterns to use throughout your kitchen.

When it comes down to it, the choice is personal preference. Do you like the durable qualities of quartz or the beauty of natural stone? Depending on how your household functions and your personal taste, either can be a good choice. But fair warning, much as you may think you want one versus the other, looking at the full slab at a slab yard may change your mind completely. Keep an open mind. We have had many clients that come in adamant on the functionality of quartz but are mesmerized by the artistic beauty of Mother Nature’s quartzite. Countertops can be a very emotional purchase. It takes up a great amount of surface space in your kitchen. You see it every day. You use it every day. Seeing the quartz or quartzite slabs in full effect is highly recommended. If after visiting the slab yard you are still undecided, give us a ring.

Maintaining a garden takes some effort, but it’s a project even a beginner can tackle with ease. Consider these tips to start growing your at-home garden:

1. SELECT THE PERFECT SPOT

Find an area where you'll see it often so you’re reminded to care for it regularly. Find a flat area you can access easily and where erosion, wildlife and other pitfalls won’t be a problem.

2. CHOOSE BETWEEN GROUND AND CONTAINERS

There are pros and cons to gardening in containers vs. the ground, and there’s no universal right choice. Rather, the best garden depends on your goals and preferences. A ground garden usually offers more space and may provide a better growth environment for roots. However, a container garden is often

STEPS TO START GROWING PRODUCE AT HOME BACKYARD BIRDS

a cleaner planet with the right seeds

GROWING YOUR OWN PRODUCE IS AN ALL-AROUND SMART PRACTICE, FROM THE MONEY YOU’LL SAVE AT THE GROCERY STORE TO THE CONTRIBUTIONS YOU CAN MAKE TOWARD A CLEANER PLANET.

ATTRACT

Knowing what kinds of seeds different birds like can help you attract a variety of fine feathered friends to your feeders.

Consider these popular seed types and the common backyard birds they attract:

SUNFLOWER

Black sunflower seeds attract blue jays, goldfinches, woodpeckers, purple finches, chickadees, titmice and nuthatches. Striped sunflower seeds appeal to chickadees, doves, grosbeaks, northern cardinals, nuthatches, titmice and woodpeckers. Sunflower hearts (also known as “hulled sunflower” and “sunflower chips”) attract chickadees, common redpolls, juncos, doves,

easier to maintain and may be all you need if you wish to grow just a few plants.

3. UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY SOIL You may think any dirt will do, but keep in mind the soil you plant in will be the primary source of nutrients for your produce. Not only that, but quality soil provides stability so plants can root firmly and grow healthy and sturdy to support their bounty. Quality soil also allows for ample drainage. Organic matter like compost, leaf mold or aged manure all help improve soil quality.

4. KEEP WATER CLOSE Lugging water can quickly eliminate the pleasure of tending your garden, so be sure you’re situated near a hose. You’ll know it’s time to water

when the soil is dry about an inch below the surface.

5. PLAN FOR PLENTY OF SUN A bright, sunny spot is a must, since most vegetables, herbs and fruits depend on six or more hours of sun every day. Remember the sun’s path changes throughout the year, and as trees and foliage grow, they may produce more shade with each growing season.

6. CONSIDER WHAT YOU'LL GROW Starting with veggies you know you like is a smart starting point since you’ll be pouring sweat equity into making them grow. Over time, you might add new varieties, but early on, keep your focus on foods you know you like so you can see a meaningful return and avoid waste. You’ll also need to consider what you can grow

WHILE ALMOST ALL BIRD SEED MAY LOOK PRETTY MUCH THE SAME TO YOU, IT DOESN’T TO THE BIRDS YOU’RE FEEDING.

finches, goldfinches, grosbeaks, nuthatches, pine siskins, titmice and woodpeckers.

NYJER

These lightweight, tiny seeds are a favorite of goldfinches. Put nyjer seeds in a hanging feeder with tiny holes so the small seeds won’t get blown away. Nyjer also attracts redpolls, juncos, doves, indigo bunting and pine siskin.

SAFFLOWER

These white seeds are slightly smaller than black sunflower seeds. Because they are bitter, grackles, blue jays, starlings –and squirrels – don’t like them. However, they do attract doves, purple finches, chickadees, titmice and downy woodpeckers.

WHITE MILLET

Good for scattering on the ground, white millet attracts ground feeders such as juncos, sparrows, indigo buntings, towhees and mourning doves.

CRACKED CORN

Popular with ground feeders, cracked corn appeals to doves, crows, jays, sparrows, juncos and towhees. Avoid getting finely cracked corn as it’s vulnerable to rot and can quickly turn to mush.

When choosing a bird seed mix, pay attention to the ingredients list on the package. Bird seed is required by law to list ingredients in order of content. Some cheaper mixes have filler seeds such as

to maturity within your area’s growing season. If necessary, you might want to start transplants you can nurture indoors before moving them outside when the temperatures allow.

7. PLANT ACCORDING TO A CALENDAR Knowing how long it takes different foods to mature will help you create a planting calendar. You don’t want to harvest everything at once, and if you stagger planting and replant what you can, you’ll have a garden that produces food for your family for a longer period of time.

CRISIS doesn't make an appointment

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR AGING PARENTS

As the owner of Silver Linings Transitions, a move management company, I see the challenges we adult children will face as our roles shift to caretaker.

A vivid vision of mine was visiting my great grandmother in the “nursing home” seeing all the geriatrics sitting in the lobby eagerly waiting for someone to visit. Even as a young child, I could identify their anguish.

Today, senior living is about vibrantly living. Once you begin touring senior communities, you will feel more like you’ve stepped into a resort rather than a hospital. Communities offer something for nearly every budget, personality and lifestylefrom pickleball, to gardening to fine dining.

As our parents age, we adult children worry about our parents and how we will address their care needs while managing our own families and responsibilities. Life in a senior community is a solution to this challenge providing quality of life for parents and allowing adult children to resume our role as their child spending quality time together rather than completing tasks.

As a move manager, I am often the first person who meets with a family after they’ve made a decision to move to a senior community. The most common concern I hear is “how will I downsize and what will happen with all of my things?”

Enter Silver Linings Transitions. We handle all of the logistics of a move starting with a customized floor plan of what will fit in the new home. Working from the plan, we help sort through belongings determining what will be kept and handling the sale, shipping or donation for the items that won’t fit.

Next we schedule and oversee our vetted movers, coordinating all the details of the move with all parties involved. Typically, the majority of the packing is done the day before the movers arrive and our clients sleep in their own bed both packing day and move day. While we are overseeing the movers and unpacking the home, our clients enjoy a day out returning to find their entire home is unpacked, organized and decorated. We also recreate favorite spaces and make sure the new home feels familiar and “homey”.

Silver Linings Transitions partners with more than 15 local Realtors to cover all or most of our services. In order to qualify for this program, call us first to learn more.

As the title suggests, we never know when a fall or an accident will happen. In my experience, recovery from these accidents becomes significantly harder as we age and can often be the difference between living independently versus relying on care. Making decisions proactively

and not during a crisis is significantly less traumatic for everyone.

In fact, the number one thing I hear after we’ve assisted a client with their move is “Why didn’t I do this sooner?”

Silver Linings Transitions specializes in seniors but also assists busy professionals, divorcing clients and families with young children. We also provide home organizing and photo organizing services.
