Jog-A-Thon is one of McKinley’s biggest fundraising events, raising funds for school programs for the IB Program and WHEEL classes such as Art, Ceramics, Dance, Garden, Music and Spanish. These programs are not funded by the district so they rely on fundraising events like the Jog-A-Thon.

This year’s Jog-A-Thon will take place in-person on Thursday Oct 28, 2023. All students will be receiving a FREE Jog-AThon t-shirt! In the past, students had to purchase them or earn them by raising a certain amount of money. The district

felt that this year all students should have a free t-shirt to wear to the event to show their McKinley spirit and foster a sense of community.

Community sponsors are also a big part of fundraising events and community businesses get a lot of benefits being a part of these events at McKinley elementary. Local sponsors get their names on the T-shirts that show they support the students and the school’s efforts to keep important programs available to each child’s educational experience.

“We chose this neighborhood because we were making the transition from living in Manhattan. When we moved here, everyone was buying lofts downtown. That was the last thing we wanted to do coming from a condo building in New York where you have people upstairs downstairs,” said McT-Contreras. “We wanted a little house with a little backyard where we could walk to places. Urban Suburban. You are far enough away from the downtown craziness but you are able to walk to restaurants, walk to shops.”

McT-Contreras and McTernan’s unique business background comes from years in the Hair Design industry in N.Y.C., where they honed their skills by getting to know their clients on a personal level. This invaluable experience has translated seamlessly into their roles as realtors, since they believe that real estate is ultimately a personal relationship business. “Z had started working in a hair salon here and I was trying to figure out what different career I could do that I could be good at that would subject me to any more chemicals,” explains McTernan. “I thought I could do really well at this because I could see how the realtors at my receptionist job were not interacting well (with clients). I kinda thought I wanted to do real estate and then I worked as a receptionist to get the feel for it and realized I would be good for it. I knew I could do it.”

LaFayette Hotel & Club

An historic milestone for San Diego’s iconic LaFayette Hotel and Club was unveiled in mid July showcasing the full transformation into a nexus of inspired design layered in cultural experiences.

Owned and developed by CH Projects, the company behind some of the city’s most acclaimed restaurant and bar destinations (Morning Glory, Youngblood, Born & Raised), the new LaFayette Hotel & Club reflects the brand’s commitment to creating properties that reflect the unique cultural fabric of San Diego including their first and only hotel.

The result is a luxurious and spirited oasis that transports guests to a bygone era where they can engage in true escapism, connection, and exploration. A longstanding symbol of San Diego’s history located in the city’s North Park neighborhood, the LaFayette Hotel & Club is a two and half-acre Colonial-style hotel built in 1946 by young entrepreneur Larry Imig as a haven for young Hollywood hosts of those days like; Ava Gardner, Lana Turner, Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope.

Shortly after it opened, the property was purchased by Conrad Hilton and changed ownership several times in the following decades and was maintained with varying degrees of effort and investment. The LaFayette Hotel & Club’s complete overhaul— its first proper restoration since it was built—was designed by Brooklyn-based Post Company including eight new food & beverage outlets along with all 139 rooms and the signature pool that remains the focal point of the property.

Renowned music producer Swizz Beats has created the hotel’s soundtrack played on a custom-built speaker system designed by Devon Turnbull. The aesthetic embodies the hotel’s connection to its glamorous past while showcasing modern, yet meaningful craftsmanship within a collection of eclectic spaces.

The hotel’s myriad of dining experiences provide their own distinct moods yet mirror the same grandeur and delight as the rest of the hotel. The outlets will debut in two phases including:

Beginners Diner - an authentic drawing that feels as if it has always been there with the hotel built around the concept. The interiors act as an installation of a traditional diner from the 1940s, and details down to the placemats, flatware, and fountain drinks transport guests into this historic era with a diner historian consulted on the details.

The restaurant’s chrome storefront and bold neon signage stand out in sharp contrast to its environs, becoming a beacon that signals visitors to explore what is beyond. The concept is a tribute to the Americana hero dishes that helped democratize restaurants midcentury with a nod to traditional Greek and Jewish food influences.

The Lobby Bar - a circular design under the soaring glass atrium flooding the space with light and is anchored by the Atlas statue and surrounded by a hand-painted ceiling by Brazilian-based artist Joāo Incerti. The menu will feature thoughtful, classic throwback cocktails served in an environment created to foster connectivity between visitors and locals. This bar is constructed with detailed wood surrounded by delicate banquettes with wrought iron lamps and is a convenient meeting space and starting point to the many dining and entertainment rooms held within the hotel.

Quixote - an Oaxacan-inspired concept and Mezcalería designed with monastic qualities that envelop guests with an agnostic sense of worship. The entire space was created from a decommissioned Catholic church in Mexico and reconstructed to showcase dark wood paneling, rough cobblestones that dot the entryway, flickering Santa Maria candles, rich stained-glass windows and baroque pews and banquettes surrounding the pulpit-inspired bar. Heirloom grains and masa with artisanal moles anchor the dining experience alongside creative craft cocktail spotlighting mezcal and Mexican distillates.

The Pool Bar - both composed and excessive with a sun-drenched stone patio cascading down into the checkered pool and connecting garden-like deck surrounded by abundant, overgrown bougainvillea, citrus, and jasmine. Brightly colored and scalloped umbrellas shade striped chaise lounges and rattan clamshell chairs along the pool’s perimeter, all designed to evoke 1980’s luxury via the Amalfi Coast. Aperitivos, spritzes, and refreshing bites are featured on the menu.

There is a game room featuring a two-lane bowling alley The Gutter is inspired by Henry Frick’s personal bowling alley at the base of the Frick Museum and welcomes guests to a whimsical escape serving classic cocktails including a custom-made gravityfed ball return system, elegant pool tables, and shuffleboard.

There is an ongoing auction that will end the night of the party for those wishing to take home any of the wonderful art at the gallery. Visit the CONNECT exhibit in the Gallery from now till September 30 to make bids on your favorite works from an incredible community of past and present Artists in Residence (AiRs). The auction closes at 7:30p.m. the night of the Garden Party.

The Art Produce Garden is a collaborative exhibition at Art Produce Gallery and City Gallery featuring past and present Art Produce Artists in Residence (AiRs). CONNECT brings together a wide range of expressive forms and contemporary perspectives through visual arts, dance, music, poetry, and live performances.

Home to culinary innovation and cutting-edge brewmasters, North Park is a go-to San Diego destination for everything food and drink. On Sat, Oct. 7, from 11a.m. to 3p.m., this year’s Taste of North Park will feature tastings from over 40 of San Diego’s best restaurants.

For those looking to enjoy some local brews and other beverages while they walk, you can sip on the region's local specialities while sampling all the different culinary flavors available on and around Main Street. Distillers will convene in North Park for the day to offer 4 ounce samples of their best releases as well as an array of distinctively created nonalcoholic beverages. Other offerings include local Cider, Kombucha, Wine and shopping at North Park’s eclectic boutiques all set to live music, art and a self-guided tour.

This is a ‘fun for the whole family’ event with tickets starting at $30 for beverage tasting only, $45 for food only or $65 for food and beverage. You must be 21+ for beverage tasting. Check In locations are at the North Park Mini Park, Louisiana Purchase or Haven on the day of the event starting at 10:30 a.m. North Park Parking Garage has plenty of day of parking located directly across from the North Park Mini Park on 29th and North Park Way.
