Artist Spotlight FT. WALKER HAYES

Two-time GRAMMY Winner, Zach Williams was #1 on the February Power Source Christian Country Top 40 Chart with “Jesus' Fault” featuring CMT Artist of the Year, Walker Hayes.

Walker Hayes wrote the song with Michael Farren joining Zach Williams in the song recording. This marked the first time that Williams recorded a song that he didn’t also write or share in writing. The song shares in part of Hayes’ testimony as a former alcoholic void of faith. Today, Walker stops in the middle of concerts to share about the redeeming power of Jesus, and saying to the audience... “If you miss the old me, well that is Jesus’ Fault.” Zach Williams was raised in a loving home full of faith, however, the chase of rock stardom also brought drugs and alcohol to his life. It was his college days that had Zach picking up his roommate’s guitar and soon found writing songs to be natural. Soon after college he became the front man for an up and coming rock band that toured tirelessly. By his late 20s, Williams found himself with stepchildren and a loving wife of which he repeatedly promised to stop abusing drugs and alcohol. While on the road, the bus driver was scanning the radio stations happening upon ‘Redeemed” by Big Daddy Weave – a life changing moment for Zach Williams as he discovered he wasn’t too far gone to be saved. Everything changed, Williams started a whole new life, rediscovered his faith and rebuilt his life with full sobriety. Next was the honor of leading worship at his church that led to Christmas Eve 2014 when music producer and songwriter Jonathan Smith visited the church. That led to coffee and a songwriting trip to Nashville that created the debut success single, “Chain Breaker.” Zach decided to follow up his Chain Breaker album with six-song EP, Survivor: Live from Harding Prison, which was filmed and recorded during a concert for inmates of the Tennessee penitentiary. The EP earned him a third GRAMMY nod in a row. These days, Zach Williams is a renewed man, husband, father, and one of Christian Country Music’s leading artists with a blend of southern rock, country and music with a message. In March 2023, A Hundred Highways Tour kicks off and runs through May 2023, check out the link below for the tour dates and do not miss the chance to see Zach Williams!

Congratulations to Zach Williams and Walker Hayes – JESUS' FAULT The Power Source Christian Country Top 40 #1 – February 2023.

A GARDEN OF ROSES By Kali Rose

I was very honored when asked to write for Power Source Magazine. I was told that I could write about anything and since the theme of this issue is Growing Legends, I’ve chosen to tell you about my daughters and how God has connected my life with theirs and how my mom played a role in our lives. I raised my daughters, Ellia, 19 and Kila, 15 with the help of my faith just like my mom raised me, my sister, and my brother. It was a natural instinct. It’s been hard to write about the details of how I became a Christian. My mom passed away January 9 of this year. She is the reason why my life has a positive meaning and it’s because of her and my dad that I’m a Christian. I know my mom is now with God, a better place than here on earth and she has no more pain, but her passing is still new which makes this difficult. Some may understand and some may not. It’s not that I don’t want to share what she did for me, it’s that I’m so grateful for all she did for me that it brings tears to my eyes. The most important thing to me is my faith in God. Anyone who knows me can attest that I share my faith through music as a Christian Country singer/songwriter. I’ve been blessed with #1 songs, accolades, and wonderful opportunities which I never take for granted. More importantly is telling others how great God’s grace is and how the resurrection of Jesus Christ has given us eternal life.

9

That’s the reason why I’m an artist and that’s why I’ve handed the invaluable gift of Christianity to my daughters so that they also can share it with others. How did I become a Christian? My mom handed me the invaluable gift of Christianity. Her mom handed it to her as well. Each generation knew that God was to be the focal point in a family. Just as faith is important to me, it was for my mom. My siblings and I were baptized and confirmed in a Lutheran Church, and we attended a Lutheran day school, Church, and Sunday School. My parents were also baptized and confirmed as Lutherans. My dad worked as a draftsman and was a part-time musician in a band. My mom started her own catering business and baked wedding cakes. She showed us how to work hard, took the initiative in doing just about anything and influenced us to be respectable people. She was amazing. My parents worked hard so that my siblings and I could attend a Christian school and take music lessons. A Christian education was important to them and I’m grateful to them for giving us this opportunity. My parents went through struggles like many marriages. It was their faith that kept them together. Because of their issues they wanted religion to be the focus in their children’s lives, so they enrolled us into a parochial school. This is where I learned that a Christ centered life would guide me in my own struggles and give me a positive influence. My mom wanted my siblings and I to excel in whatever we do best. She also wanted us to take part in things she couldn’t since her parents didn’t have the resources to help her. I grew up in a home surrounded by music, my dad played the accordion and piano, as did his dad and uncles. My mom had a great voice and I loved to hear her yodel. Music was a tradition so my parents provided us with piano and voice lessons. It became a love for me and a career. This led me to compete in talent competitions and the Miss America program which

10

provided me with scholarships for college. My mom also saw potential in my sister and I and enrolled us in modeling classes which led to commercials and modeling for Walmart, Meijer, Sears, and many other companies. Just like my mom wanted her children to excel in what they do best, my daughters competed in pageants when little and took guitar lessons. Ellia and Kila began singing with me at church concerts, fairs, and festivals both at the age of four. Ellia plays the acoustic and electric guitar and Kila plays the lap steel guitar. They are both naturally gifted. My husband gives an inspirational message in which he talks about his job as a therapist and his experience of how God impacts the lives of others. He is also in charge of sound. When Ellia was thirteen, I asked her to play guitar

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if more people cared about the mental and spiritual "well-being" of young adults especially today? when I sang on the Grand Ole Opry stage. It was our first time, and I was so proud of her. I’ve been blessed to perform with her at the Inspirational Country Music Awards and last year I performed with both Ellia and Kila. I’ve been blessed with a family ministry. Ellia and Kila are musically talented but are also awesome athletes. Ellia holds the school award for most points scored for her high school (Kila believes she will beat it) and now plays for Bethel University in Mishawaka, Indiana, a religious institution. Kila is a sophomore in high school and plays for her varsity basketball team and track team. They also do great academically.

My daughters have blessed me with their talents and academic achievements. My husband, Eric was also a college basketball player and contributed to our daughter’s basketball careers. I’ll let him tell you all about this part of their lives. My parents gave my siblings and I a foundation based on God to withstand whatever comes our way. I feel good knowing I’ve done the same for my daughters but there’s always a worry about influences like social media that draws kids away from the foundation set. Sometimes you meet people who show you there are positives at work. My sister and I were interviewed by a casting agency for movies in Chicago. The agent said we would easily be cast based on our backgrounds but said the industry changes people and referred to it as immoral. He saw us as respectable young women and in his heart was compelled to express himself. We were amazed because in our work in the industry, we’ve never come across someone like this. He didn’t know that we were equipped with the armor of God. Looking back I’m grateful for this man’s candidness because he probably expressed this to other young women. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if more people cared about the mental and spiritual well-being of young adults especially today? I worried about outside influences as my daughters got older. But now that they’re older, my daughters have friends that are grounded in faith and their parents provide a safe and spiritual atmosphere. A firm foundation with God gives you the ability to make good decisions. Ellia and Kila have different personalities. One hides her feelings, even with what troubles her deeply but is comfortable playing guitar anywhere. The other one shows her feelings and has anxiety to the point that it affects her physically. I share both types of mentality. When it was time again to sing in the children’s choir for the Christmas Eve service, my sister went but I stayed home. My nervousness and anxiety overcame me. I still experience it, but I’ve learned to control it. You’re probably wondering why do I sing on a stage in front of thousands of people with anxiety? I do it because the result is greater than the fear. I feel blessed when my music can impact others by an audience member

11

telling me they were moved by my performance, or a song helped them through a bad time in their life. I met a woman in the town where I live, and she told me that she and her husband saw one of my concerts and bought a CD. About a year later, her husband was ill in the hospital. She said my CD gave him comfort and they would listen to it every night in the hospital before he passed away. Instances like these make me certain of the path God chose for me. Both of my daughters get why I do what I do. They know God has given them talents both musically and as athletes. Although they both have different levels of anxiety; they’re learning how to deal with it as they grow older with help from their parents and finding what works themselves. They also realize the result is greater than the fear. God is so good. I was a quiet and shy girl growing up, but I was certain of my faith and had a passion to sing. Ever since I was baptized, Jesus has been my personal Savior. I thank my parents for giving me the ultimate gift. My Christianity has given me a foundation to stand on with strength and wisdom to overcome difficult situations. My music career has blessed me with many accolades (ICMA Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Dove nominations) and I don’t take them for granted. The most important role for me as a Christian is serving a good purpose in life and giving back to God with my music. I never thought my music would reach so many people, I would be able to perform on well-known stages and have a family ministry. I’ve been blessed with many accolades and gifts, but the most important gift is knowing Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior and passing that on to my daughters like my parents passed it on to me. I have recently recorded tracking and vocals for my upcoming album with award winning producer, Jeff Silvey. I’m excited to have co-written seven of the twelve songs. One song was written with my mom in mind and one about the encounter with my dad after he passed away, which I have never told the public about. One of my daughter’s co-wrote a song and recorded vocals with me and the other daughter played guitar on a song. You’ll have to wait for the album to come out about summertime, to find out more details. I hope this album will be very successful in bringing others to Jesus Christ. My mom heard some of my songs before she passed away and loved them. I can imagine both my parent’s excitement if they heard my album. They would be so proud!

Coaching Legends Eric Foster

My participation in organized baseball and basketball leagues began in the 1st grade, continuing both sports through high school and then four more years with college basketball. Throughout my playing years, I began to see how much athletic competition helped build character. With the assistance of several Christian coaches, my faith grew as a player. After college, I contemplated a coaching career as I loved sports, also knowing the value in leading others as a coach. For me, the choice was to go into counseling instead and away from organized sports for many years. Then came my daughters, my interest was energized again. It was a great joy to coach both girls’ basketballs teams for 10 years. I always saw sports as a microcosm of the real world, so for those 10 years of teams, we considered how God wanted us to handle ourselves on and off the court. How He wanted us to act toward our peers as well as adversaries, win or lose. My daughters, Kila and Ellia are both great examples of positive Christian women and I hope someday they reflect to see that part of their character has been built through their athletic competition. I have been a therapist for the past thirty years with three degrees over the course of seven years, completed two practicums, an internship, accumulated hundreds of continuing education course hours and have worked with thousands of individuals, couples, and families. Most people would believe that all of this experience has enabled the success of our outpatient mental health center. Similarly, some have suggested that my experience in my field has aided me in guiding my daughters Ellia and Kila through their childhood. I’m sure there is some truth in this, but none of the listed experience has been the primary source of my knowledge in business or as a father. There is no doubt, my ability to lead others within my family and outside of my family, came from my family. I was fortunate to be raised in a Christian home by parents who lived by the example of Christ. My mother was more vocal in her teaching while my father spoke by his actions. Both modeled an example that has guided everything I do. I have always hoped I could get close to giving my daughters what my parents gave me. I have made at least two good decisions that have helped me get close to this goal: accepting Christ into my life and marrying a strong Christian woman, Kali. As my girls have become their own persons, Ellia and Kila have already demonstrated strong Christian principles which make me very proud. They have been very successful in multiple endeavors, but more importantly they are both Christian women who are very good people. I’m sure most of this comes from their Mom, but at least I can say I chose their Mom; remember it was one of my two most important life decisions.

The Rising Rose By Kila Rose

My whole life is centered around our creator. God brought me into my life, and is bringing me through it until I am with Him enjoying and rejoicing in the eternal life He has given to me. God continues to show me that He is there for us, helping us through our struggles, along with showing us amazing creations and miracles that He completes in this world. In my personal life, God has walked with me through many trials in my short 15 years. Growing up my stomach was always in pain whether it was eating too much, or a certain thing that hurt it, or even eating too fast. It hurt so incredibly bad that I

Anxiety is a negative mental illness, while fear can be both positive and negative.

couldn’t help but cry because of the pain. This happened so often that when it didn’t hurt, I would get so happy. Today, as I experience this problem, the key factor that affects me is the famous “anxiety.” I become so focused with what I eat and when I eat it, that it’s hard to enjoy it. For example, when I eat in public, I must rationalize what I consume. Anxiety is a negative mental illness, while fear can be both positive and negative. 14

Fear shows that in the end, we will feel great about overcoming the scary challenge, because God gave us the courage and shows us that with Him, we can do anything. (Philippians 4:13) Through my fears God has shown me that they’re all pointless in the long run. Like speaking in front of people, not something easy for me, but why be scared? No physical harm will happen to me. At the start of a basketball game or a track meet, I get nervous. God shows me that nothing is scary about these things, but I still am, and each moment is an opportunity to remind myself that God is in control. Yes, I wish this wasn’t an issue for me, but God has given me and others the ability to overcome it. Now that I’ve stated the negative side of the pain, what about the positive? Through the pain, God gets me through it every, single, time. His pain on the cross doesn’t compare to ours, and that shows me that the pain is temporary.

When I come to challenges, I talk to God in my head, and He helps me overcome them. In John 10:10 we read that God says, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come so that they may have life, and have it to the full.” So next time you have an obstacle in your life, and you question God’s almighty strength and power remember that...

He’s always going to be with you. If He can bring you to it, He can bring you through it. :)

Kila Rose, daughter of Kali Rose.

ELLIA ROSE

My name is Ellia Rose. I am 19 years old, and you might know my mom, three-time ICMA Entertainer of the Year, Kali Rose. Ever since I can remember, I’ve traveled the country with my family performing at concerts and seeing the amazing creations God has made in this world. I have been to 48 States and three countries. I’ve been blessed to visit so many places from the Grand Canyon to the Alaskan glaciers, to many national parks across the United States. Seeing all these beautiful landmarks has helped me realize how powerful God really is. How could someone look at our world and not believe that God has created it? I thank my parents for taking me to see all these places, even the ones in the 100-degree weather. My favorite place is tied between Alaska and Nashville, Tennessee. I love the cold, but I also love country music. My family and I attend the Inspirational Country Music Awards every year which means a week of country music, guitars, singing, and Jesus. When I was little my whole year was focused around this week in Tennessee and when I finally got to be around the singers and musicians, I hoped to be just like them one day. I remember before I knew how to play the guitar, I would get back from the ICM week and be so excited to try and play my guitar. I don’t know how my family could sit and listen to the awful noise I made, but to me it meant the world. I begged my parents to buy me guitar lessons and like the amazing parents they are, they paid my lessons for four years. I went to every lesson so excited to learn and get better. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 11 years old but even crazier is that I’ve been singing at my mom’s concerts for as long as I can remember. My parents tell me that the first time I sang at a concert was when I was 4 years old. I sang in the back of the church with my dad because I was too afraid to go up front. Other than that, I don’t get nervous performing on stage. Why? I’m not sure, maybe there’s something wrong with me. I guess I just know that God is in control of everything and will always be there for me, so I know I have nothing to worry about. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.” I’ve gotten to perform at fairs, festivals, and churches across America singing and playing the guitar for my mom. My favorite place we have performed has to be the opportunity to play at the Grand Ole Opry. I love to entertain and make people smile by the music I create. I grew up going to a Lutheran grade school and a public high school where we as students prayed before our games and before we ate lunch because we wanted God to help us through everything and to always be there with us. My life has two parts. One is music but the other is basketball. I’ve been playing basketball since I was in the first grade. My dad was my coach every year until I got to high school. I played on the boys’ team from 5th to 8th grade. I went to Bremen Senior High School in Bremen, Indiana where I got the career scoring record in basketball and was part of a 2019 State championship team for softball. I’m not one of those people who dreaded high school and couldn’t wait for it to be over. I really loved it. I made great friends and amazing memories. Now I currently attend Bethel University, a Christian College in Mishawaka, Indiana. I have gotten the amazing opportunity to play basketball for the Pilots and I am having a fun first year. I am so grateful for all the opportunities God has given me in my life with music and travel. I hope every time you look outside, you’re reminded of God’s grace and power.

LET THE STIGMA GO!

PSALM 38 1 O Lord, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

Mental illness is a major concern among our youth these days, actually that concern is not age specific. As we grow it is the combination of our faith and life experience that serves for a foundation of support through struggles - it is hard to imagine dealing with the intense struggles of the mind without that growth of faith or life experience that comes with age. Let’s get real - the mental issues that we are talking about is no respecter of age, faith, race, social or economical standing.

2 For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore.

We are each challenged, held responsible for being good stewards of the next generation. We are failing as the Body of Christ in that responsibility to each other and most especially our youth. Let’s move beyond speaking the words and get to doing the WORD.

3 There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.

Like any physical illness, mental illness is hard to control - it is not a moment to “just count it all joy,” - it is not just having a bad time, worry or stress. Even void of any reason, a person can experience fear, anxiety, hopelessness and all of it is very physical. Mental illness is also not a new thing, while the Bible does not use words like depression or the vast medical diagnosis of today - the subject is all in the verses.

4 For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

Let’s dive into Psalm 38 for an eye-opening education of what was happening back in the day.

5 My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. 6 I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. 7 For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease: and there is no soundness in my flesh. 8 I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart. 9 Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. 10 My heart panteth, my strength faileth me: as for the light of mine eyes, it also is gone from me. 11 My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off. 12 They also that seek after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my hurt speak mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.

The people are crying out, there is great physical pain associated with this pleading to God and HE IS LISTENING - it is also clear that their faith is holding more power than their fear at this moment in Psalm. The entire chapter serves to show that mental health struggle was real then and it further serves to show what we as the Body of Christ can do. In our own life and in being steward of that responsibility to others, we need to continue faith being the power in moments of despair AND we need to teach the tools, be the power tool. We know the greatest of reward comes from the help of another, which is not “I will pray for you or you are in my prayer.” NOW, PRAYER is the GREATEST POWER we have, but only if we USE IT! So the challenge is to PRAY with them and for them. Be in prayer as you drive them to seek professional attention, be in prayer as you sit with them or serve them in any manner. As it shows in the parable of the Good Samaritan, he took care of the injured man’s needs - he didn’t walk by saying, “I am so sorry, I will put you on the prayer list at Church, you will be fine, God Loves You.” Additionally, the Bible tells us to take care of our bodies, that includes our brains. We should all be encouraged and encourage others to seek professional support when facing mental health struggles. First to know and to share is YOU ARE NOT ALONE - so many Christians experience and have experienced mind issues. Mental health struggles are not a reflection of faith level or status with God. Always know that God is love period! The incorrect belief that Christians should not experience mental health issues is the fuel that ignites the stigma, this is due to ignorance or shame. That’s why it’s so important to break down that stigma. Let’s talk about it at church, let’s encourage in fellowship to be less judgmental and more open, let’s eliminate the speech that alienates others…DON’T BE A SHAMER! The Church and YOU should be a welcoming place that no matter what another can find comfort, assistance, support and LOVE! Did you know that the ratio of individuals in a state to available mental health providers: 504 to 1? We need to rise up, be seen and heard, break the stigma and LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE A LIGHT OF DIRECTION! AND IF YOU NEED THE SUPPORT - SPEAK UP, YOU HAVE NOTHING TO BE ASHAMED OF!

13 But I, as a deaf man, heard not; and I was as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth. 14 Thus I was as a man that heareth not, and i n whose mouth are no reproofs.

46% of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition sometime in their life, and half of those people will develop conditions by the age of 14.

15 For in thee, O Lord, do I hope: thou wilt hear, O Lord my God.

56% of adults with mental illness do not receive any mental health treatment.

16 For I said, Hear me, lest otherwise they should rejoice over me: when my foot slippeth, they magnify themselves against me. 17 For I am ready to halt, and my sorrow is continually before me. 18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin. 19 But mine enemies are lively, and they are strong: and they that hate me wrongfully are multiplied. 20 They also that render evil for good are mine adversaries; because I follow the thing that good is. 21 Forsake me not, O Lord: O my God, be not far from me.

60.3% of youth with depression do not receive any mental health treatment.

Ludlow Creek is a group of 5 close friends and accomplished musicians who love to create and perform music. Tapping into their strong bond of friendship and utilizing an array of instrumentation - including both acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards, bass, drums and occasionally mandolin – they create genuine, heartfelt music with infectious guitar and keyboard riffs featuring strong vocal harmonies. Formed in 2013 as the Dayton, Ohio based cover band “Southbound”, over the years the band began crafting their own music that embodied the sound and feel of their various musical influences and eventually decided to pursue writing and performing their own material full time. As the band prepared to release their second album over the winter of 2021-2022 they renamed themselves, and Ludlow Creek was born. With two full length albums to their credit and a third album in the making, Ludlow Creek is quickly becoming a hot commodity in the Indie/Americana/Roots Rock music scene. GODLY WOMAN

GROWING LEGENDS OF FAITH

One of the things I love about Country Music artists is how they honor the legends that pioneered in the early days. Artist like Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, The Carter Family, Hank Williams, Lorretta Lynn, and many others. Because of the footwork of the forefathers, the country music industry has been able to grow and is now creating a new generation of legends almost every single day.

Because of this progression in country music, we are fortunate to still have living and active legends among us today; Willie Nelson & Dolly Parton to name just two. Several more are becoming legends as we speak, i.e., Alan Jackson, Tanya Tucker, Garth Brooks, and many others. So how does somebody become a growing legend? Like many things in life, growing in something is a process which takes practice and commitment. As music artists have to have elements for their workflow, so too do followers of Jesus. Luke 2:40 says, “Now the Child continued to grow and to become strong, increasing in wisdom: and the favor of God was upon Him.” Luke 2:52 says, “And Jesus kept on growing in wisdom, in physical stature, in favor with God, and in favor with others.” The “ing” in growing is a progressive tense of how Jesus was maturing, increasing, and growing. Jesus modeled for us the perfect picture of practicing spiritual growth and ultimately building a spiritual legacy.

20

We can practice spiritual growth by: 1.) Having A Posture of Growth: This means a lifelong commitment to learning, growing and expanding. 2.) Prioritizing Our Areas of Growth - Mentally (Wisdom) - Physically (Stature) - Spiritually (Favor with God) - Socially (Favor with Others) There must be a good balance, or you will find yourself stressed out, skating on “thin ice” in one or more of these areas. 3.) Embracing Practices for Growth: Luke 2:46-47 says, “After three days of separation, they finally found Him – sitting among a group of religious teachers in the temple asking them questions and listening to their answers.” Jesus had: - A Place to Grow (The Temple) - People to Grow (The Religious Techers) - A Process to Grow (Questions and Listening) Sometimes we fail to grow because we don’t place ourselves in a growth environment. Put yourself in environments where you’re asking questions rather than giving answers. When you surround yourself with growing people you improve the speed and direction of your life. 4.) Knowing The Purpose of Our Growth Jesus knew His growth was for the preparation of His mission. We know a lot of details about His birth, ministry, death, and resurrection. However, there was 30 years between his birth and his public ministry where Jesus was growing towards His purpose. Personal growth in the hidden years is often what God uses to prepare us for the public years. Stay focused on God’s purpose for your life. Continue growing toward your purpose so that you can become a growing legend of faith; thereby making an impact with the purpose He has given you.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T

BY Shane Roark

Respect…… Webster's Dictionary defines this word as: Esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as a manifestation of a personal quality or ability. In today's world (and long before today) Respect is being seen as something we are all entitled to. This is simply NOT true. Basic human rights and (of course) appropriate behavior is always a thing we should be practicing. Somehow, acting decent has been confused with Respect. There’s a massive difference between simply not being openly rude to people and respect. I realize this sounds confusing as you’re reading it. However, that confusion is a product of today's media and liberal entitlement thinking. Respect ABSOLUTELY must be earned. I am not certain at what point the definition of Respect became so convoluted. Words like ESTEEM, EXCELLENCE, QUALITY, ABILITY etc.. is a part of earning Respect. Somehow we are now in an environment that suggests if a person simply shows up, they should have Respect. Make no mistake, I am an advocate of everyone being treated with decency and kindness. That is NOT the same thing as Respecting someone for their character, achievements, abilities, hard work, longevity, honors, excellence etc.. Here is where it gets tricky… Working from the basis that EVERYONE should have Respect bestowed upon them means EVERYONE assumes that Respect will be bestowed upon them. Let me give you an example: Let's say a man decides he is in love with his car. He decides he wants to marry his car. He has a wedding, photography, a cake and guests. Now, he assumes that RESPECT should be bestowed upon this ludicrous action. Crazy right?? Here’s the thing, this actually happened. So, with zero achievement, zero reasoning, zero intelligence, zero excellence, zero logic and zero sense, the US Government decided that this man's rights be respected. WHAT?? So, this is ludicrous right? Well, of course it is. But this started way way way back when Respect became something EVERYONE was simply entitled to. Somewhere and somehow we have completely derailed from what respect is and should be. Now, perhaps you’re thinking “no harm no foul. What’s the big deal?” The BIG DEAL is this, Respect still MUST BE EARNED. This fact is never going to change. The Global leaders, Media, Social Media, your friends, family, pastor, boss, spouse or anyone or anything else will never ever change that fact.

24

#THEGOSPELTRUTH With that being a fact it puts us ALL in a very precarious position in our daily lives. Now we are being forced to bestow respect upon idiots, lazy people, whackos, atheists, insane people, mean people, brutal people etc.. It’s now assumed. Then, many of us expect Respect to be bestowed upon us as well. Even the slightest achievement is now expected to be celebrated. I even see it in our Christian music. Someone achieves a charting position in an obscure miscellaneous chart, or wins some fake, made up award and they post it on Social Media like they’ve topped the National radio hit list and won a pile of Grammys!! Now they want us all to celebrate this grand achievement. Ummm… No. This behavior is directly tied to the watering down of what Respect is and should be. Later when that same artist figures out that they achieved basically nothing and no one really cares, they’re let down and upset and their feelings get hurt. Well, I mentioned that FACT earlier that is: Respect MUST BE EARNED. Ignoring this fact will get you disappointed very quickly. This particular issue of Power Source is about Growing Legends. If you want to go down through history as a legend or an Icon you’re gonna need to earn it. You need to accomplish something. Be excellent. Bring greatness to everything you do. No one is going to hand ANY of us true Respect and admiration. Personally, I want NOTHING handed to me freely except my salvation. But even that has Biblical standards that MUST be followed in order to have God's Respect and blessings. You can’t go to the altar and pray then continue living in sin and assume all is well. It doesn’t work like that. Maybe we should all work toward turning this ship in the other direction. The next time someone says “you have to respect__ __ __ __” maybe we should say “WHY?”

FREE PITCH SESSION FOR YOU! Did you know there was an organization that would be glad to have you as the guest of honor on a Tuesday night and pitch songs tailored for you? Did you know that cost would be zero dollars and zero cents? TSAI (Tennessee Songwriters Association International) has been around for over 30 years serving the songwriting community and would like to help you find the best songs for your project. They have weekly pitch meetings to artists, publishers, managers, sync agents, etc., and you could easily be the next one on the list. How does this work? Simply send an email to tsainashville.com and let them know your name and what style of songs you are looking for, along with some Tuesdays in the future that you would be available to come to Nashville. On the Tuesday you have chosen, you would sit down at the head table with the President of the Association as they played songs for you that you could either pass on or take home for further consideration. No need to explain why you didn’t like a particular song if it didn’t fit, so there is never any pressure:) If you can’t get to Nashville does this make you ineligible? Absolutely not. They would be happy to do a live session with you over the internet.

THE CROSSOVER The song we sing out loud in the car, include in a memorable event, learn all the lyrics to and celebrate the music and the artist to which it belongs! It starts just like all other music finding a way in our life through feelings. It is the way it makes us feel! It's the song that brings us to a moment of worship or praise without intention from the artist. It is THE CROSSOVER! “I Hope You Dance,” recorded by Lee Ann Womack with Sons of the Desert, and written by Tia Sillers and Mark D. Sanders, was one of 2000’s most successful singles in several genres. Tia Sillers explained that while at the beach standing at the ocean she felt so small, so insignificant and then went into her writing appointment with Mark D. Sanders who started the sessions with his "I hope this and I hope that." Release to be a song from a mother to child - it is so much more! Play the song, close your eyes and imagine our Heavenly Father saying this to you - no matter your age, life experiences or state of mind. Just know HE is speaking these words into your heart and HE MEANS IT! I hope you never lose your sense of wonder, You get your fill to eat but always keep that hunger, May you never take one single breath for granted, God forbid love ever leave you empty handed, I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean, Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens, Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. I hope you dance... I hope you dance... I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance, Never settle for the path of least resistance, Livin' might mean takin' chances, but they're worth takin', Lovin' might be a mistake, but it's worth makin', Don't let some Hell bent heart leave you bitter, When you come close to sellin' out reconsider, Give the heavens above more than just a passing glance, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. I hope you dance... I hope you dance. I hope you dance... I hope you dance. (Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along, Tell me who wants to look back on their years And wonder where those years have gone.) I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean, Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens, Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance, And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. Dance... I hope you dance. I hope you dance... I hope you dance. I hope you dance... I hope you dance. (Time is a wheel in constant motion always rolling us along, Tell me who wants to look back on their years And wonder where those years have gone.)

This month I honor artists who inspired and helped bring about our Christian Country music. There are a few legends I want to spotlight. In my mind some of the legends that have inspired us were not gospel singers. There are some classic country singers that greatly influenced the Christian Country style. George Jones was not a gospel singer, but he was raised in church and loved gospel music. Like many others, I think he was the greatest country singer of all time. His vocal style was something many of us have tried to emulate. Certainly, the emotion he sang with brought out the best of every song he recorded. He must be considered an influence on our genre. For me, Porter Wagoner was a great influence. Porter loved gospel music and his recitations would bring a tear to the eye. His duets with Dolly Parton certainly were an influence on today’s Christian Country singers. Toward the end of his career, he recorded some great gospel albums that I still listen to. There is a long list of legendary country singers that continue to influence our music. Artists like Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Vern Gosdin, Hank Williams, Marty Robbins, Connie Smith, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Alan Jackson, and many more must be considered legends who’ve had a tremendous impact on our music. When it comes to gospel singers, I want to highlight some artists I consider to be forerunners of our Christian Country music. As a young man I loved Smitty Gatlin. Smitty was the longtime lead singer for the Oak Ridge Boys. Current lead singer, Duane Allen, replaced Smitty many years ago. I loved Smitty’s singing because he had an authentic country voice. Smitty was a smooth crooner that really had the country feel in his voice. I listened to him for years and always thought he could have been a country star. Another artist I want to highlight is Dottie Rambo. Dottie was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. She was also a very gifted singer. Her alto voice was country, with a heavy dose of soul. Her charismatic personality could hold a crowd spellbound. She was anointed to sing and to write. She was certainly an inspiration to me and someone I looked to for inspiration. In the late 80’s when Christian Country was starting to sprout, she was a great supporter of the genre. I had been friends with her since the 70’s and she was a fan of White River. She was kind enough to write some backliner notes for our Rodeo Preacher album. Dottie Rambo is a true legend of Christian Country music. Kenny Hinson, another legend who deserves our honor, must be highlighted. I first heard The Hinsons years ago when they were just starting to make a name for themselves. Kenny was a young man and listening to him it was easy to tell he was greatly influenced by Merle Haggard. On some of the early Hinson recordings it sounded like Mighty Merle was singing with them! As the group began to mature, Kenny developed his own style. His voice was superb and his range incredible. He had the whole package. His stage presence was captivating, his anointing strong and his style country. In the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s almost everyone wanted to sing like Kenny Hinson. Kenny could have been a huge country star, there is no doubt. He loved Jesus and always stayed true to gospel music. He is indeed a legend of Christian Country music. Finally, this is by no means a complete accounting of all the legends who have pioneered and influenced our genre. It’s just my attempt to pay homage to some of the artists who’ve made an impact on me and on our genre. Cogitate on this… Gene Reasoner 31

SPRINGING FORWARD AND FALLING BACK

By Rebecca Higgins

Why do we do this, and will it ever stop? Which is Standard Time, and which is Savings Time? We did this at first to conserve fuel and power in World War I by getting more hours of daylight into the workday. For the most part, it ended after the war although some states held on and continued to change their clocks. We brought it back during World War II and then let it go again. 1966 is our

modern version of this when the Department of Transportation made the time changes into Federal

Law. Farmers had nothing to do with it and apparently (according to the internet) are a little peeved at getting blamed. To answer the second question; Standard Time is the wintertime that ends in March and Savings Time is the summertime and ends in November. This all falls under the Department of Transportation

because the whole reason for time zones making sure everyone was tracking time accurately in synchronized manner was to prevent train accidents and to ensure timely delivery of people and freight. This came about in the late 1800s. Arizona and Hawaii are fine with time zones but have both said a firm “NO” to changing clocks. Eleven states have passed some sort of resolution to stop the

time travelling and in 2022 the US Senate passed the “Sunshine Protection Act” which would put the us permanently on Daylight Savings Time. Are there benefits to all this clock fiddling? Well, not really. Studies have either been inconclusive or have found no benefit as far as saving energy, saving gas, lowering crime, or any effect on trade. The only firm number is a 0.02% reduction in energy use during Daylight Savings Time discovered in 2008

by the Department of Energy. We all have anecdotal stories of cranky children and problems adjusting as we get older. There does seem to be a very small uptick in some health conditions around the days after we change. Were we to go on permeant Daylight Savings Time the more northerly cities would have more days with less daylight. The example the government gives is that Bangor, Maine,

would have 98 more days with a sunrise after 7 am. As you go south and west the effect is less, Washington DC would have only 44 more days with a sunrise after 7 am. The best solution seems to be a permanent switch to Daylight Savings Time and then allow for seasonal hours, especially in our northern cities, which will be the ones that will see the most hours of darkness no matter what we do

to our clocks. Those of us living in the South; all we can say for those in Alaska is, well, bless their hearts, not sure it is going to matter for them.

A few time tidbits: Before 1966 there is a story of a bus going the 35-mile trip between Steubenville, OH and Moundsville, WV that went through 7 different time zones! Benjamin Franklin wrote an essay in France suggesting that the locals get up earlier that has been taken as an early time change

advocation. But it was mostly a jab at the French for lazing around until noon. One New Zealand advocate wanted more time for his afternoon hobby. Bug collecting!

In 1883 time zones were opposed by some Evangelical Christians as “time came from God and

railroads were not to mess with it”. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine is in favor of abolishing

the time changes. Port Arthur, Ontario, did it first in 1908 and it spread to parts of Canada. Then Germany; Austria took up the idea in 1916. As this was WWI, the UK and France followed within weeks.

JACKSON

Jackson, TN has a rich music history of its own that is worth exploring, situated between Nashville and Memphis it serves as an historical marker on the music highway. Home to Carl Perkins, of Blue Suede Shoes fame, Jackson, Tennessee has embraced its musical legacy with an annual Rockabilly Festival, a Rockabilly Mural, and a Rockabilly Park.

Holding no shortage of claims to legends like Tina Turner, Eddy Arnold, Carl Perkins and train engineer Casey Jones of the "Ballad of Casey Jones" song. Jackson, Tennessee is not only the midway point between Memphis and Nashville, it is also deeply rooted in music history. Carl Perkins grew up in Jackson, where he started playing the guitar at age seven. The story goes that Perkins wrote his biggest hit on the side of a potato sack after someone told his prom date not to step on his blue suede shoes. While Elvis Presley’s "Blue Suede Shoes" version may be better known, Carl Perkins first recorded version of the song sold over 2 million copies, charting number one. His song "Everybody’s Trying to Be My Baby,” was later covered by the Beatles. Perkins was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, credited with not only influencing The Beatles but also the King of Rock n Roll himself...ELVIS. You can discover even more about Jackson’s music scene now by visiting Jackson Hidden Tracks, a music initiative launched by Visit Jackson TN online. When you visit, make sure to stop by the Legends of Tennessee Music Museum located in the historic Andrew Carnegie library building to trace the history of West Tennessee music and experience all of the musical heritage. A heritage that includes the setting of the first rock music every heard. That's correct, Rock Music was written and played in Jackson, Tennessee first.

Jackson was the site for the First Hard Rock Café in America. Hometown boy, Isaac Tigreet launched it right there in Jackson, Tennessee, forever ensuring a trip to Jackson would put one at the ground zero for Rock and Roll. And now about that infamous 'Ballad of Casey Jones." Jackson is the original home of the CASEY JONES, and the 8,000 square foot train museum awaits your arrival to tour the life and legend of not just Casey Jones but all of railroad history. About 25 mins from downtown Jackson you will find the home of Tina Turner’s Flagg Grove School and West TN Delta Heritage Center. Back in the day, Tina was the little girl named Anna Mae Bullock who discovered her powerful voice in the Spring Hill Baptist Church choir. Today, she has sold over 200 million albums and won 12 Grammys. Her journey is chronicled at the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center. The Brownsville Flagg Grove School is a restored schoolhouse filled with costumes, gold records and memorabilia donated by Tina Turner. Jackson and the surrounding region is a refreshing Southern experience celebrating the music, history and beauty of the Tennessee Delta. From the music sound to Civil War cannons to baseballs, state parks and plates piled high with pulled pork barbecue and catfish, there is something for all ages and tastes. Jackson is charming, historical and filled with the sounds of life. Plan your trip at VISITJACKSONTN.COM

"Take It To Jesus” Anna Golden Ft. Kari Jobe, Anna Golden and Kari Jobe bring their beautiful voices along with a very peaceful melody together for this single. Their spot-on vocals deliver a powerful performance that will have your attention from the first verse. "Take It To Jesus" has a very simple but important message; when you have that time in your life of feeling alone, tears that won’t stop and the loss of hope to change it… there is one thing that can change all that…you just need to "Take It To Jesus."

"Only Jesus Can" Daniel Mulkey With the voice of a country storyteller wrapped up in worship; Daniel brings the pitch of a seasoned worship leader to a country sound. "Only Jesus Can" is a song about how we, as Christians, should be a constant help and support to others. When the times or issues are greater than our help, that is the moment we are to share the one who can heal the sick, take away the fears, and is always with us. "Only Jesus Can" is a song that reminds us of how awesome our Jesus is, that He is always with us and that we should share HIM.
