Artist Spotlight

For Jeff and Sheri, gospel music is genetically programmed into their DNA. As members of acclaimed musical families, Jeff’s father is one of the Easter Brothers and Sheri’s mother is a member of The Lewis Family, they grew up surrounded by the sound of people praising God through musical gifts.

In August of 1984, both were at the Albert E. Brumley Sundown to Sunup Gospel Singing in Arkansas. Jeff, who was playing bass for the Singing Americans at the time, took the opportunity to reintroduce himself to Sheri’s mother Polly; they had met on a previous occasion. Polly introduced Jeff to Sheri and the two were married ten months later.

They traveled and performed as part of The Lewis Family for several years. But in 1988 they decided it was time to strike out on their own, and they haven’t looked back since.

Jeff & Sheri have been nominated for numerous Dove Awards and won nine. They’ve also received two career Grammy nominations, and Sheri has been named the Singing News Favorite Alto eleven times and the Singing News Female Vocalist four times. In 2012, Sheri received Alto of the Year by the National Quartet Convention's first annual awards.

Most recently, Jeff & Sheri were awarded the Trio of the Year for the 2021 Singing News Fan Awards. Jeff & Sheri’s wall of awards also include three Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music Association Awards, two International Country Gospel Music Association, nine Voice Awards for Female Artist, five Voice Awards for Song/Single of the Year, two Voice Awards for Christian Country Group, four SGM Fan Fair/USGN awards, seven SGN Scoops Diamond Awards, four Hearts Aflame Awards, and three Cash Box awards.

They have also participated in the Gaither Homecoming Video Series since 1993.

Rising to #1 on the June Power Source Christian Country Chart, HERE COMES JESUS, is a single from the TREASURES album. Recorded along with the legendary Mo Pitney, its a timeless hit from Jeff & Sheri Easter.

Thomas Jefferson said “I feel … an ardent desire to see knowledge so disseminated through the mass of mankind that it may, at length, reach even the extremes of society; beggars and kings.” How is the United States making that happen today? Through the institutions of Public Libraries. The biggest and arguably the best is our Library of Congress in Washington DC. How did we come to have this fantastic repository of books and knowledge?

It all started in 1800, when the library was founded in the Capitol Building. However, we lost it all in August of 1814 when the building and library collection were burned by the British Army as they famously sacked the city during the War of 1812. The collection was small by today’s standards consisting of “only” 3,000 books. At the end of the war Thomas Jefferson offered his personal library to Congress who purchased it for $23,950. This helped the former President financially and those 6,487 books became the foundation of the library we know today.

Our Library of Congress started as a resource solely for the use of Congressmen, but now the largest library in the world is there for all of us to use and enjoy. They add about 10,000 items a day to their collections. We have the largest Law Library in the world with congressional publications dating back to the beginning of our country. And it isn’t only books in English - there are nearly 470 other languages represented, which make up nearly half of the collection.

Other collections held by the library include: prints and photographs, motion pictures, recorded sound, music, maps, telephone directories, comic books, newspapers, and scientific journals. The Library also holds the Archive of Folk Culture and administers the Veterans History Project. Books for the blind in the braille format are also available.

The library has grown over the years from the Thomas Jefferson Building (the original separate building) to include three other buildings and two storage sites. By the numbers: they welcome more than 370,000 visitors a year on the property and have more than 151.6 million website visits with most people viewing multiple pages. The Library has a staff of 3,172 and a budget of just over $800 million. They do take donations, if you are so moved. They issued more than 484,600 copyright registrations in the year 2022. They have more than 175.77 million items in their collection.

There are so many things available on the website that I recommend going to LOC.gov and just surfing around. There is much more about the history of the Library and its inner workings and information about current exhibits as well as information about all of the resources that have been digitized and put on line to be viewed for free. I had to make myself stop looking at all the interesting things to focus on writing this article. I even found where you can ask a librarian questions over the internet in different specialties.

The Library of Congress is, however, a research library which means you cannot just check out a book and take it home. So even though they may have a copy of the latest best seller, you cannot read it at home. Books may only be used on the premises by those 16 and up and you do have to sign up for a reader card. The Congressional Research Service is the part of the Library that conducts research requests from members of Congress on a wide range of topics. Congress has access to the Law Library which includes information on international law and foreign laws as well as our own.

They obtain their books and other collection items through a couple of methods. First by copyright deposit, where copyrighted material is deposited as part of the copyright process. Then material is received as gifts, from exchange with other libraries, items sent by other governmental agencies, and by purchase.

They are serious about preserving knowledge in as many forms as they can from the oldest example of printing in the collection that dates from 2040 B.C. to the most modern means of digital recording. Thomas Jefferson believed that knowledge and an educated public was a key to democracy. In his time books were how people broaden their horizons and learn about the world beyond their front door. The Library of Congress is doing what it can to carry on Jefferson’s vision of an enlightened public.

By the way, Jefferson’s books are on display in an ongoing exhibition as part of the Rare Book and Special Collection Division on the Second Floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building.

On the same day that TenFiftySeven Media acquired this publication back in 2022, Carolina The Band performed the finale of an award show, that night the song, “Everyday American,” made a lasting impression and impact on the home of Christian Country…

Written fifteen years ago, “Everyday American,” is a timeless song that was recorded by Carolina The Band about seven years ago. The lyrics perfectfully described this group, embracing all that is relevant and celebrating the heart of America. The song reminds us of who we should be grateful to and what we should remain grateful for in our daily lives.

The ability to worship freely, the tie that binds us together is the theme and one that Carolina The Band truly expresses in every single song they perform.

As a follow-up to their 2018 recording, “American Morning,” Carolina The Band has just finished two new recordings titled, “Turn A Legacy of American Songs” and “Country Classics: Carolina Style,” produced by megaproducer Wayne Haun on the prestigious Club44 Records label of Nashville, Tennessee.

Scott Whitener

The pastor of Temple Baptist Church in Gastonia, North Carolina is a dynamic minister who leads a simple life with his wife, Judy and their Siberian Husky, “Maizie.” A life of blue jeans, boots, tee shirts, and tractors, but that only describes a part of the incredibly gifted Scott Whitener’s life. Otherwise known as the lead voice of Carolina The Band, his vocals grab the attention of the audience and are synonymous with the sound beloved of this award-winning group.

Scott, the son of a pastor, grew up singing as part of a trio in his father’s church, joining the powerhouse quartet, The Regals, later on followed by being a part of the award-winning Singing Americans. Whitener would go on to sing lead for Jericho and later transition to the Melody Masters around the mid 90’s, in that group he met Chris Roberts, a meeting that would bring Carolina The Band to life.

A fulfilled life is experienced at every waking moment by Whitener, the passion for all the moments is easily heard when you get to have a conversation with him. Back at his father’s church so many years ago, it was a pretty girl in the front row of the choir that he announced to his brother that he would marry. That he did 45 years ago, and from the sound in his voice, it remains the blessing of Judy, with whom he shares a home built in 1897, that he cherishes most. They love to go antiquing and riding through small towns. He embraces hobbies that include fast cars, baseball, and whenever he can get on his tractor…Scott Whitener loves the tractor, most especially the peaceful life that surrounds him while on that tractor.

His music, it is for him the moments that he experiences with people and the music of Carolina The Band. Not so much the singing to them, but the music shared with the audience. It is a conversation with all those in attendance that flows with melodies and memories. Scott’s musical hero, William Lee Golden of the Oak Ridge Boys, continues to be the mentor that motivates the passion for the reason Whitener does what he does and that is sharing the love of God through music. That love comes through whether it is a hymn, a golden oldie, a southern gospel tune or that signature country sound that he and Chris Roberts developed years back.

Described best by the man himself, Scott states, "We've never looked at what we do as the music business. For us, it's always been the 'people business.' The music is just the vehicle that brings it together."

Chris “Doc” Roberts

From the “Land of the Sky,” Asheville, North Carolina comes a tenor that can deliver any type of song with an unmatched power. Chris Roberts’ music experience started at the age of four, singing with his mom and dad at church. It was a natural thing to do, a gift from God that Roberts decided at a young age to study, practice, and continue with excellence. He took his training to serve as the minister of music at Chapel Grove Baptist Church while singing with the Chapel Grove Quartet. Later he joined the Melody Masters, at first playing piano then singing tenor which all led to what we all get to experience from any stage with Carolina The Band.

In 1988, Chris married Janet, what he calls a true life partner. Together they reside in Shelby, North Carolina enjoying two grown children, two bonus kiddos (the spouses), and three beautiful grandchildren…and a grand-dog!. He enjoys golf and getting away to the Carolina coast with his beloved wife and family.

Chris, Janet, and their children all graduated from Gardner-Webb University, it was a medical education for all except Roberts. The irony of his nickname, “Doc,” is not lost on the talented artist as he received a Bachelor of Arts in Sacred Music. However, it is the Masters in Church Music from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary followed by a Doctor of Worship Studies degree from The Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies that brought about the nickname given by fellow Carolina The Band member, Scott Whitener.

Doc had quite the career in Church Music for over 30 years as a leading Worship Pastor in several mega-church settings. The passion for excellence, dedication to using his gift for the glory of God and constant attention to his craft makes Chris one of the greatest tenors ever.

At the close of a great conversation with Doc, we asked what some may not know about him and the answer was as epic as all we do know about him. Chris “Doc” Roberts is a professor at Fruitland Baptist Bible College, and has been for over 18 years. He teaches music theory, hymnology, Christian worship, and music ministry focusing upon smaller churches, both online and on campus. Doc calls the shots for the group on stage and works tirelessly night after night to provide an experience that folks won’t soon forget.

Described best by the fellow members of Carolina The Band...“Doc Makes Us Better.”

Chris Parker

Within the small historic town of York, South Carolina resides the man with deep, rich vocal tones and a bass rig that is a foundation for Carolina The Band. Not only does Chris Parker live in a historical part of the United States, he is a historical part of gospel music. His father, Charles Parker started a trio in the 60’s with five brothers, the youngest of them would become the gospel legend, Ivan Parker. It was a childhood of music for Chris, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, in the 80’s he played drums for his dad’s group, the Sojourners. During his teenage years, he ventured into country music playing drums for several bands, in the 90’s Parker played with a rock band. Over the years he has played a variety of music styles and then Chris Parker took a break. It was in the 2000’s that Parker’s father asked Chris to join his new group Arise, but this request was to sing bass, a new concept for the musician, a first time and the music world is forever grateful that moment happened. Along with a musical heritage, Parker has an interesting career in Highway Graphic Design, a job that brought Chris to Charlotte, North Carolina and set in motion the path to Carolina The Band.

Chris and his beloved wife, Holly traveled over to Gastonia, North Carolina to see “Uncle Ivan Parker,” and a band got on the stage of the church performing the Oak Ridge Boys hit song, “Elvira.” He was blown away by the mix of country, gospel, and fun positive music. In the conversations that followed the concert, Holly Parker learned there was a position open in Carolina The Band and eagerly volunteered her husband. Chris best describes what it means to him. He says, “For me, being part of this amazing team called Carolina affords me the opportunity to do what I love most, making great music and getting up close and personal with the friends and fans of the group. Nothing is better than that!”

It is a creative life for Chris Parker, whether he is on the job or on the stage or simply enjoying a quiet, relaxing time with his wife, Holly. They love the beach, and the warm weather seasons. We asked “What do you sing in the shower?” He replied with Cali Reggae music, a genre that is known as inspirational, hopeful, and full of unity.

Doing what you love, with who you love, while sharing love is clearly the core of this amazing artist.

With an unmatched work ethic and dedication to all that he does, Chris Parker firmly believes that you must practice the gifts that are so wonderfully given by God. He does not take his gifts lightly, or for granted, he gives practice to them, a guest for excellence of which all of us are the benefactors each time Carolina The Band takes the stage.

Mitchell Whisnant

At just the young age of nine, in the small North Carolina town of Connelly Springs, Mitchell Whisnant learned the cords of the guitar from his father. At just twenty two years old, he has become a mainstay with Carolina The Band, a true prodigy on the electric guitar and tops it all off with an incredible voice. Mitchell is a creative force on stage and off with a kind, humble heart that seeks to learn constantly and create excellence in his life.

You hear at times a person referred to as an “old soul,” and that would perfectly describe Mitchell Whisnant. He sang with his family in church growing up, traveled as a soloist for a little bit and then joined Carolina The Band in 2020 as a guitar player. Influenced by the artistry of John Mayer, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed & Brad Paisley, it is the country style guitar that ignites the passion of this musician. The harmonious sounds of groups like Restless Heart and the Oak Ridge Boys has fueled the vocal drive creating the artist that is impacting audiences across the country. Affectionately known as “Flash,” Mitchell continues to thrill the crowds every night as part of the high- energy sound and presence of Carolina The Band. It is easy to forget his young age as he presents as a veteran artist, with creative wisdom far beyond his years.

Off the stage, Whisnants life is shared with his childhood sweetheart, Kassie. Married and living in the community of Valdese, North Carolina. Mitchell enjoys any and all time with his wife, it is a purposeful life with her, an evening stroll together is a favorite thing for the couple. A life that is about to expand as they prepare to welcome their first child, due in August! It is easy to know that Whisnant will be an exceptional father, he talks about the great example of his own father. When not on the road with Carolina The Band, and before those evening strolls with Kassie, you can find Mitchell working on cars or fishing with his dad.

The award-winning Christian Country Artist and member of Carolina The Band is a musician, songwriter, singer, and inspiration. He is a natural encourager, a character trait that comes alive in a powerful way through his stage presence and music. It is said best by Mitchell himself, “God has a purpose for your life, find something you love, then find God’s plans for you within what you love and let him use you.”

GODLY WOMAN

SPIRIT OF DEPENDENCE Written by KristeNicole

As an independent Godly Woman, I like getting things done in my own way, schedule, etc. More often than not life throws a curveball that can trip me up in who I am and what my goals are.

When life or our current circumstances become too hard to handle on our own it can often be overwhelming and feel like too much. Thankfully, as followers of Jesus, when we lose our independence physically or emotionally, we have a Heavenly Father who doesn’t want us to walk alone. He doesn’t want us to be independent by ourselves but rather dependent on His guidance and mercy.

Hebrews 4:16 says “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

If you’re like me you want to be independent but the truth of the matter is that we cannot get through all of the challenges that life brings without our Heavenly Father.

So how do we have a spirit of dependency on God in an independent world?

1.) Prayer When we turn to the Heavenly Father and pray we are able to be vulnerable and let our independent walls down because we know that He sees us, knows us, and cares about us.

Matthew 6:8 says “Don’t be like them, for your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask Him!” The Heavenly Father already knows what we struggle with making it easier to pour out our hearts to Him. By being dependent on Him through prayer, we can admit to ourselves and better deal with our daily life and interactions with others.

1 Samuel 7 gives us a picture of the power of being dependent on God in prayer. When the Israelites were facing an oncoming battle with the Philistines and were very afraid, Samuel who would later become their leader and judge, knew what to do.

“He pleaded with the Lord to help Israel, and the Lord answered him.” – 1 Samuel 7:9 Samuel led the Israelites in turning their eyes and hearts back to God in sacrifice and prayer for protection and strength against the Philistine army.

Like the battles we often face in our own lives, Samuel knew that they could not defeat the strong army on their own. They needed help and went to the Lord in dependent prayer.

Samuel 7:10 says “Just as Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines arrived to attack Israel. But the Lord spoke with a mighty voice of thunder from Heaven that day, and the Philistines were thrown into such confusion that the Israelites defeated them.”

The Lord defeated the Philistines on behalf of the Israelites as they found protection through dependence on His mighty power.

2.) Community It is so prevalent in our society to focus on one’s own accomplishments, journey, and problems that we often lose sight of the community around us.

Our Heavenly Father did not design us this way but rather longs for us to support one another, lean on one another and ultimately lead by example in pointing others to Him which takes a strong sense of dependence.

Galatians 5:13-14 says “For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

If we only focus on ourselves, our independence, and our freedom we will find ourselves wandering aimlessly and forgetting why we are really here to start with. Instead, we should be finding a community to lean on so that we can build each other up in Christ as we purposefully journey through this lifetime sharing the light of Christ with others along the way.

As we become more dependent on God, our relationship with Him will grow stronger. We also are more willing and able to show God’s mercy and love to those around us.

3.) Scripture We can gain a lot of direction through being dependent on God’s word. There is so much we can gain through seeking guidance from people in the Bible who have faced challenges, triumphs, and similar situations that we walk through today.

While being secure in who we are is a powerful thing, being dependent on God is so much more rewarding. Being independent may feel like a great accomplishment, but the blessings we can receive from submitting to His guidance far outweigh what we can accomplish by our own hands.

Bonnie Milne Captured on the beautiful Bosendorfer Piano at the St. Pauls’ Centre in Orillia, Ontario, Canada…

Classical Pianist and Composer Bonnie Milne ignites the keys on her latest single release…”Stolen Night Sky.”

The single, composed by Milne, features guest percussionist Dave Hewitt whose craft has been described as deep and dynamic. "Stolen Night Sky" also features the renowned musicians, cellist Kevin Fox and violinist/fiddler Shane Guse. The piece marks Milne's first attempt at incorporating percussion into her composition, with Hewitt's percussion adding layers of texture and colorful transitions, enhancing the composition's repeating theme. Fox and Guse's contributions add countermelodies and harmony, enriching the overall musical experience.

Bonnie Milne, born and raised in a small central northern town in Ontario, studied classical piano from a young age. Around age 11, Bonnie realized that she could create music. She continued on with studying Music in University and completed her Teaching Degree adding vocal music as a focus too. Bonnie taught both piano and vocal lessons over the years and began teaching music in elementary schools. Inspired by the greats of Classical Music like Beethoven and Mozart with the added more contemporary instrumental music of David Tolk and the Piano Guys with a topping of the popular sounds of Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, and Sara Bareilles. A combination of inspiration that drives her passion for music, and after Milne’s first recording experience hearing the harmonies and counter melodies of her compositions…the eternal flame of that passion was lit!

Bonnie Milne's music has enjoyed over 200K Spotify streams. She had a Top 20 radio airplay single, "New Beginnings," and a #1 UK iTunes single, "Perception." She is an International Singer Songwriter Association Awards nominee. In addition to perfecting her own craft, Bonnie Milne is also passionate about nurturing budding musical experts from all walks of life. As a musical educator and instructor, she leverages her musical expertise to offer comprehensive learning opportunities for students so they can successfully discover their unique capabilities and grow as artists.

Behind the music, Bonnie spends time with family, hiking with sons and her dog. She loves to be paddling on the water and believes deeply that it is important to model how being in nature helps us feel better and that being active is essential to our health. Take a moment to get to know her and listen to the incredible music of Bonnie Milne.

CHRISTMAS IN JULY

So, It’s no big secret that Christmas has become my go to genre and provided me with my greatest opportunities for success in recent years. Every year I hear the same question pop up from fellow writers that I’d like to address again, as a friendly reminder. “When should I have my songs recorded and ready for radio and movie pitches?” The answer to both is….the sooner the better.

Let’s talk about radio first. It’s a common misconception that you’re fine getting your song delivered by Thanksgiving or December 1st. The problem is ... .many DJ’s and Program Directors have their Christmas playlists ready in early November and don’t look for music after that. I like to play it safe and have Christmas music delivered by Nov 1st at the latest, if radio play is the intent. If radio play is not the intent, then you can release a song anytime after Thanksgiving day, realizing that the later you put it out, the more holiday moments you miss.

It used to be said that in the tv and movie world, music supervisors start looking for their music around July, so have it ready in early summer. This is no longer the case, in my experience. Over 200 Christmas movies are being made every year now and they are making them YEAR ROUND! This means if you wait until July you already missed 6 months of movie opportunities and may be shooting for movies that are coming out the following year. I’ve personally worked on several already this year and I’m excited about more! Sometimes the movies are being made on spec and they will then shop them to the highest bidder. If they don’t get the offer they want, it may go to film festivals first, to try to get some awards attached to it for an easier sell the following year. You gotta love the uncertainty.

The point is, there is never a bad time to have your Christmas music ready. The later you pitch it, the less opportunities you have for the current year in either scenario.

So grab that cup of cocoa and get your jolly on ASAP. Don’t forget that Christmas in July is an actual thing now. Many Christmas movies are scheduled to come out then, to lift the spirits up and give you a taste of what’s coming. Obviously, if you wait until July to pitch for those, you missed the boat.

I hate missing the boat because I'm too lazy to swim.

I recommend everyone have a new Holiday tune every year, simply so they don’t disappear from the spotlight for 6 weeks, and it gives you something to play in your live shows that the audience hasn’t already heard 4 million times. “CLEAN YOUR TOILET” Colossians 3:23-24 “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the lord not to man, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

This one of my favorite scriptures of all as it depicts the challenge to excellence. If we had this thought process in our minds, to do WHATEVER as if unto the Lord, We would all be much more efficient and much more intentional. But what does this mean? What is this challenge trying to get us to do? Personally, I believe this command is showing us how to develop a habitual life of excellence.

If we were to truly do ALL things as if unto the Lord, we would strive for perfection in all things Matthew 5:48.

Also in James 1:4 it says that if we believe that we can obtain perfection then we will obtain it. There are a myriad of scriptures in the Bible pertaining to striving for and obtaining perfection. This should be the goal of ALL Christians as we are under great attack by the world through culture and society.

Society teaches us that the mundane and the “close enough” is out right and should be respected. This nonsense is the trigger for the upside down society that we live in today. However, God knows that this type of mindset is unstable ground. It is in our nature to gravitate to excellence. We naturally seek it out. This is why these scriptures are there, to teach us how to create a life of excellence so that people will come our way.

True leadership is not in telling people “what to do” but, it is in showing them how to live so that they will seek it out naturally and gravitate towards us. If people see that in us and come our way, it is much easier to witness to them and direct them to the truth of Christ.

So, with that being said, how do we proceed with this habitual life of excellence? Honestly, it may very well start with your toilet. If we are to do WHATEVER as if unto the Lord, then what about that toilet? See, some of you reading this may very well be that person who will leave their toilet in such a condition that it takes acid and steel wool to clean it. Some may clean it weekly or whenever it shows signs that it needs something done.

However, if it were to be done “unto the LORD” it would literally be spotless at all times!

Why is this a big deal? Here’s why, if you can’t keep your toilet clean then I would assume your bathroom is a mess. If your bathroom is a mess then I would assume most of your house is a mess. If your house is a mess then perhaps your yard is not so great. If your yard is in shambles then most likely so is your car. If your car is a disaster then so is your workplace and so on…..

It all starts with the simple things that very few of us pay attention to. When we do ALL THINGS as unto the Lord, we will create a habit of excellence that will flow into all areas of our life. As it begins to flow throughout our lives, people will pay attention and gravitate towards that beam of excellence.

#THEGOSPELTRUTH So many of us focus on the “achievement” as opposed to the journey. The apostle Paul describes this life as a “race” in Hebrews 12:1. This “race” is to be seen as a competition with ourselves and it is unto death. This means that our journey is never complete. However, we often focus on the achievements rather than the journey. When we get stuck on the “achievements” we will often seek the next “achievement”. The journey of life is not about achievements but rather about improving ourselves daily.

Focusing on achievements will often cause us to not complete tasks as well. Once the dishwasher is loaded then we often feel like the achievement is complete. This is why so many HATE to unload the dishwasher.

When the theory of “journey” would cause us to see it to the very end and seek the next step in the journey.

I realize that using loading the dishwasher as an example for biblical excellence seems ridiculous, but it is not!

Remember, “WHATEVER” you do!!

This word ‘WHATEVER” is designed to push us towards a habitual life of excellence. If we were to truly do ALL things in life as if they were for God himself, it would literally change how we clean that toilet. Change that and more tasks of excellence will follow.

Here’s the crazy thing, doing all things as if unto the Lord is actually EASIER! If we do all daily things as if unto the Lord and truly focus on the journey, we would find that the workload becomes lighter, not heavier. Is it easier to spray a little cleaner, run a brush through the toilet everyday or to get on our knees and scrub for 30 minutes because company is on the way??

The Bible knows how to point us in the direction of a lighter burden in life. Seeking to do ALL things for his glory is easier and we get his blessings in the end. It doesn’t get much better than that.

WE HAVE A RUNNER I had a funny thought the other day. A picture in my mind’s eye of the angels with their loud trumpets sounding and big booming voices announcing to God - We have a runner! They all chuckle because they already know the outcome, they know I can't outrun God. There are no bets placed on who will win. The only bets are on how long or how far I will run! There are a few runners in the Bible too. Jonah did some serious running! Jonah ran in direct disobedience to God. He did not want to do what God called him to do. I think we've all been runners at some point in our lives, but how long we run is kind of up to us. So how long have you been running? Are you tired yet? Are you running from what God has asked you to do? Are you running out of fear? Do you feel unequipped or unworthy? Are you running because you just don't want to do it?

Wanna know something I've learned? God can run a whole lot faster than me! There's no rock to hide under. No sea or no big fish can keep God from finding me. And He doesn't give up either.

He has an endless supply of energy, and He never grows weary. God just waits patiently till I get tired of running.

And even better than learning not to run from God, I've also learned to run to God. I’ve learned to share all my concerns and trust in His wisdom and direction. But every now and then my human nature takes over and I still hear that trumpet sound and those voices say - We have a runner! So, when you feel that little nudge or whisper in your heart to do something or say something, go ahead and do it. Cause I'm here as a witness that you can't outrun God! The Good Shepherd keeps watch over His flock, He goes after the runners and brings them back into the fold.

Jonah 1:3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord.

How strong is your faith, can it sustain you at the office when everyone is talking about you? Can it sustain you in a road rage episode? Can it sustain you when your kids are driving you up the wall? Can it sustain you when your coworkers are trying to derail you in every effort you make to be a great employee? Can it sustain you when you are in the enemy’s camp? Can it sustain you in a den of hungry lion’s?

In the sixth chapter of Daniel we read about such faith that brought Daniel safely out of the lion’s den. As the story goes Daniel was found faithful by king Darius who sought to promote him over the whole kingdom, but the other administrators and satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel and his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. Keep in mind that when you are doing God’s work and you are faithful the enemy will do anything to derail and distract you from the appointed tasks that God has assigned to you.

I have never walked in a lion’s den, but 12 years ago, I was diagnosed with rectal cancer and was told by my doctor that I needed surgery to have it removed, I was already familiar with this deadly beast called cancer. Earlier in my life this deadly beast had already claimed the life of my mother through thyroid cancer on February 13th, 1983, she was only 44 years old, then nine years later after my mother’s death I lost my son on May 10, 1992 when this ravenous beast claimed his life through prostate cancer, he was just 19-year-old.

I saw this ravenous beast destroy my mother, and I watched as it consumed the life of my 19-year-old son. Then I too was in the den of this ravenous beast and all I had to rely on was my faith, and with the same power that God shut the lion’s mouth in Daniel's situation, he also did in my situation. My God did deliver me from the mouth of this beast called cancer, and my faith sustained me because I walked by faith and not by sight.

There will come a time when you also will have to walk through the lion dens of life, because life will test your faith to see how strong it is. Daniel knew that the decree had been written, and yet he prayed to his God despite the dire consequences that he would face. Nevertheless, Daniel was not afraid because he had seen the power of his God and he was confident that if God was for him it did not matter who was against him.

Daniel remembered when God delivered Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego from the fiery furnace, when King Nebuchadnezzar said to them, "Is it true that you do not serve my God’s or worship the gold image which I have set up?

They said to the king,” we have no need to answer you in this matter,” if that is the case, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace and he will deliver us from your hands O king. If we would only believe God’s word then we also can do the impossible.

When the doctor told me that I had cancer I was afraid, but I remembered all that God had brought me through and I found confidence in God, to trust him with my life because after all my life was in his hands. Faith only looks back to remember how far it has come, and each time I looked back I remembered that God was at the wheel. Friends, not only will your faith take you through the lion’s den, it will take you over mountains that look insurmountable, and across deserts that look like Death Valley, but you must remember that with God nothing is impossible.

Daniel refused to worship any but the true God; and he continued to pray to God, Daniel’s obedience to God caused him something, and he was thrown into the lion’s den to be devoured. Once again, God honored Daniel’s faithfulness to him and sent an angel to shut the mouth of the lions. The new king was sympathetic to Daniel, but his evil advisors had tricked him into trying to kill him. Immediately, he ordered all those who wanted Daniel to be sent into the lion’s den to be sent there themselves. Then he passed the law that everybody and his kingdom must worship Daniels God. Because of Daniel’s faithfulness, God caused him to prosper in the land.

If you will be faithful and true to God, God will be faithful to you in your time of need. God said,” he will never leave you nor forsake you.” All he asks of you is to trust him. Until next time my friends, be encouraged and keep the faith.

AGREEING WITH GOD

These days, in ministry, I talk a lot about agreeing with God. Somehow, someway, it seems I always come back around to this theme. Seems like a Captain Obvious moment! Duh! Of course, we’re supposed to agree with God. Yet if I, and everyone else, were to take a notepad and write down all the moments and ways that we agree with God, there is an inherent dynamic or even danger of needing to write down the moments that we fail in agreeing with God. Inadvertently, accidentally and without realizing the thoughts and deeds that we fall short of His will and ways. God’s word tells us that all have fallen and come short of the glory of God. Rom 3:23 Recently, I officiated a wedding and was so struck by how it is no small thing that two stood in agreement with God in Holy Matrimony becoming one. Everyone in the crowd may not have realized it, but they were all agreeing with God bearing witness to the holy occasion. Mark 10:6-9 The life of our savior Jesus Christ is the example of agreeing with God. In the book of John we see that He never did or said anything unless God told Him to do it or say it. John 5:19 In the wilderness, apparently, God told Him to reject the enemy and remind him of His word. Get behind me Satan for it is written. Matt 4:1-11 Apparently, God told Him, his only begotten son, to tarry for four days. Jesus did not argue when He was told to pick up some clay, spit in it and apply to the blind man’s eyes. He was able to be angry but sinned not. That is because when we get angry, we are operating out of our flesh. The lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. But Jesus was not operating out of His flesh. He was simply agreeing with what His father told Him to do. He saved all of mankind when He agreed with God in the garden of Gethsemane to endure the cross. Matt 26:36-46 I wanted to touch on this theme of agreeing with God first in order to get to the purpose of this article. Do we really believe that we are made in His image? Fearfully and wonderfully made? I’m sure that the unanimous answer is yes. His word says so. He says we are salt and light. He tells us to reckon ourselves dead to sin. He says that we are more than conquerors. That in our weakness, He is strong. He says that if we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth that Jesus Christ is a son of God and they died for our sins we shall be saved. Rom 10:9 He says we are joint heirs with Jesus Christ and that by the spirit of adoption we cry out Abba Father. By grace through faith.

Eph 2:8-9 Oh, and by the way, He assures us it’s all so, in the beginning was the word, John 1:1, and faith comes by hearing the word. Rom 10:17.

Am I preaching to the choir? I am sure of it. Except, wisdom and understanding is something we should seek as if we are digging for buried treasure. Prov 2:4

There are some things that I’ve known about for a long time, but now that I look back, I can, way more, clearly see that there is a lot that I apparently did not understand. Chief among them is the role of a husband and father. As I worked my head off on many days to provide and protect, I failed to agree with God about some things. The word of God tells us about God’s desire to turn the hearts of the father back to their children. Mam 4:6 Back from what? The cares of this life , the deceitfulness of riches and the lust of other things that can choke out the word and the word becomes unfruitful in our lives. Mark 4:19 The word of God tells husbands to give himself to his wife (loving and cherishing) just as Christ gave Himself to the church. Eph 5:29 But too many times, according to author John Bevere in His book The Bait of Satan, being offended can distract us from this very thing. According to His grace and work in my life, Phil 2:13 I now understand that, had I been better at striving to agree with God, I would have understood that He created us in His image. Among many other things, He is the creator. We are created to be creators. Not just in sermons, music, and art, but in moments and circumstances.

My family and I don't own the corner market on trouble, but we have seen our share. We have had a season or two of some real struggles. I confess to you now, that on too many days, my response was not one that anyone could say agreed with God. I was wound up, upset, angry, and offended. What if I had better understood that it was, very specifically, my role to agree with God. It was, and still is, my job to be the creator. Ambassador to Christ. Ambassador to reconciliation. My responsibility is to show my wife and children what agreeing with God looks like and how good it is when we do.

Don’t get me wrong, I have pictures and videos of my family and I working, laughing and singing together. (Man, am I glad there are no pictures or videos of the days when I so drastically failed.)

These days I am aware, and thank you Lord, I’m winning at trying to create some solutions and better moments. That can only be done by agreeing with God. His word says the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. James 1:20. And, take note, that outburst of wrath is mentioned in the same verses (in the book of Galatians, chapter 5) as murder and adultery and all the other works of the flesh.

In music ministry, we create a lot. We write songs and sermons. We create marketing strategies and images. But along the way we are also creating moments and hopefully moments that inspire people to turn to God. My hope in this article is to encourage and remind us all that people are watching. There are still many who don't really know the love of God, the peace of God, the grace of God. Jesus said they will know you are my disciples….John 13:35 Too many are still walking around who are starving to death to see the difference that the word of God makes in our lives. The only way we can show them is to be more on purpose about agreeing with God. If the enemy can keep us offended he can keep us from being effective.

God has created us and set us aside for a time such as this to affect those around us. To create solutions and better moments than what our flesh would naturally want us to do. In ministry, we get to showcase, if we will, a response that agrees with God. How we respond to people, to unexpected changes, to trouble and so much more.

I know how, all too well, to respond with my flesh. Anger, frustration, lack of patience, indignation, worry, etc. I’m seeing incredible things happen all because God, in His mercy, has been at work in me and in all of us as well, purging the habits and hang ups of the flesh. And one of the ways He’s doing that is by giving us this glorious goal to shoot for. The same thing that Jesus succeeded at, agreeing with God. And He assures that the work that He has begun, He will finish and, Thank God, His grace is indeed sufficient.

On July 1, 1776, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, the following day 12 of the 13 colonies voted in favor of independence.

The delegates spent two days debating and revising the language of a statement drafted by Thomas Jefferson. On July 4,1776, Congress officially adopted the Declaration of Independence, the date is celebrated as Independence Day.

During the summer of 1776, 56 delegates gathered at the Pennsylvania State House and pledged their “lives, their fortune and their sacred honor” in the pursuit of independence. Now known as Independence Hall, the UNESCO World Heritage Site is where the Declaration of Independence was signed, finalizing the colonies’ break with England. Eleven years later, representatives from 12 states gathered once again at the State House to shape the U.S. Constitution, finally creating one unified nation. A national treasure, Independence Hall is one of only 24 World Heritage sites in the nation.

Spring (March or April) or fall (September or October) are typically the best times to visit Independence Hall and Philadelphia as the weather is generally pleasant, and crowds are fewer. Admission is by guided tour only and free!

Originally the Pennsylvania State House, Independence Hall was completed in 1753. During the years surrounding the American Revolution, the events that took place inside its walls make it one of the most historically important buildings in the country. A visit gives you a chance to walk in the footsteps of George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and the other founding fathers.

After an introduction and overview from a park ranger, the tour makes its first stop in the Supreme Court Chamber. In the 18th century, it hosted the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.

The guide provides information about the legal system of the time and how trials took place before continuing. The second room (the Assembly Room) is the most important room of the tour. This is the room where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted in 1776. The one piece of original furniture is Washington’s “Rising Sun” chair, which he used during the Constitutional Convention.

Independence Day and the Declaration of Independence has and continues to play a significant role in our Pop Culture.

The adoption of the Declaration of Independence was dramatized in the 1969 Tony Award-winning musical " 1776,"and the 1972 film version, which follows John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as they attempt to convince the members of the Second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy.

The 5th Dimension recorded the opening of the Declaration on their album Portrait in the song "Declaration". It was first performed on the Ed Sullivan Show on December 7, 1969.

The Declaration of Independence is a plot device in the 2004 American film National Treasure.

During the time that Philadelphia was the capital of the United States from 1790-1800, this building was the meeting place of both the House of Representative and the US Senate. Significantly, it is also the room where George Washington and John Adams were sworn in as president.

REMEMBERING RUSTY GOLDEN

Rusty was born on January 3, 1959 in Brewton, Alabama, the eldest son of William & Frogene Golden. His given name is "William Lee Golden, Jr.", as he's named for his father, however, shortly after birth, his family began calling him by the nickname of "Rusty".

He chose to use the name Rusty in his professional career and he's still called "Rusty" by family and friends.

Rusty, who has always been a man of deep Christian faith, has often publicly spoken about his faith, both on television as well as social media. One such public affirmation was: "Until the Lord calls me away from this world to the next, I want to make it clear that I believe in Jesus Christ as the true Lord and Savior. I believe that Jesus is the Son of God, was sacrificed on the cross, died for our sings, and rose again. HE loves us."

During this period of intense creative activity, Rusty experienced a serious health crisis which turned out to be a blessing in disguise. On October 5, 2002, after returning from performing at a private party for FORTUNE magazine at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, he decided to check himself into the hospital after what he said was "feeling something different going on inside my body". Within 3 days he would receive a life-saving quadruple heart bypass at St. Thomas hospital in Nashville.

Rusty relied on God's leading and decided to write a gospel song. It was called “John in the Jordan”, referring to John the Baptist in the Bible. Rusty said of this period: "Musically, it was a return to everything I grew up on". His song 'John in the Jordan' became a very successful #1 record, and the album on which it appeared went on to win a Dove Award for Southern Gospel Album of the Year at the 39th GMA Dove Awards. Rusty soon found that artists in the gospel genre wanted to hear more from him.

The year 2022 marked a significant milestone for Rusty: 50 YEARS in the PROFESSIONAL MUSIC INDUSTRY! It was also a busy year for Rusty and the 3-generation band. "William Lee Golden and THE GOLDENS" released their 34 songs on a 3-album set which covered 3 genres in March: Southern Rock, Gospel and Country classics. The group began touring in Tennessee, Georgia, and Kentucky and then made their debut as a group at the Grand Ole Opry in July, making it the 6th time Rusty had performed on the legendary boards.

William Lee Golden Jr., known as “Rusty,” died on July 1 at age 65 at his home in Hendersonville, Tennessee - preceded in death by his mother Frogene Normand, grandparents Luke and Rutha Mae Golden, and Elliot and Estelle Normand. He is survived by his father William Lee Golden (Simone), and brothers Craig Golden, Chris Golden (Marie) and Solomon Golden, along with many nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

“This is the hardest thing ever for a father to have to face,” William Lee Golden said via a press release. “I love my family more than anything. Rusty was a great musician, a talented songwriter, and a wonderful son. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers for the days ahead. I love you, son.”
