Artist Spotlight

The discovery of one’s talent, the moment a person experiences their gift, the awareness of a calling happens differently for everyone. Quite the understatement for the artist at the top of the January 2024 chart, as it took place on a high school stage in Owensboro, Kentucky during a production of the musical, “Grease.” Steve Bridgmon knew he wanted to sing, the Lord told him to do Christian music, next in his life timeline would be the discovery of Christian Country Music - the sound that combined his beloved Country music with his calling to sing for HIS glory. Steve is an award winning artist that has added author and television host to his resume since making the move to Nashville in 2016. It is his ability to multi-task that has Bridgmon thriving in his quest to bring the Gospel to anyone, anywhere without hesitation. The chart topping single, Bethlehem Virginia, 1BC at first glance would appear as holiday music, but look again and listen often as it is a song of divine importance. A timeless tune sharing the greatest story ever told with a modern day perspective. “Songwriters Jon Eborn and Wes Bullock really knocked this one out of the park,” shared Bridgmon, “ when I received the demo, I immediately knew that I wanted to record this song.” It was an epic song to release last year and this new year is shaping up to be great as Steve Bridgmon is releasing a new EP in March with 6 songs. “With my tour schedule being as crazy as it was this past year,” said Steve, “ I’m looking forward to adding even more concert dates in 2024. You can catch him live at the Inspirational Country Music Association Awards in May which includes hosting the finale of The Sound of Small Town American. While maintaining a very busy schedule, Steve has a heart to encourage other artists to never give up, to stay encouraged through their musical journey. Through his social media and personal interactions, it is all about sharing with others to stay the course, to not get distracted by the enemy. “Keep pushing out those great songs because this is how we are going to reach the lost,” exclaimed Bridgmon.

GODLY WOMAN

GOD’S CHOSEN INSTRUMENT By KristeNicole I love to put on some instrumental background music while I do some computer work. The YouTube recommendations keep rolling on throughout my morning and somehow gets me on a Tommy Emmanuel playlist. Tommy Emmanuel is an award winning solo Australian guitarist who plays with a multitude of musical influences and styles, including Jazz, Blues, Bluegrass, Folk, Rock, and Country. I get captivated by his playing with every melody he produces from his guitar instrument. The sounds he can make come out of a guitar seem like magic – the magic of music that is. Not everybody can work an instrument and make it sound like Tommy Emmanuel and that got me to thinking about instruments and how my heart desires to be an instrument for the Heavenly Father to work and make something beautiful out of. In Acts 9:1-19 God sent Ananias to Saul after Saul’s encounter with God on the road to Damascus. Ananias was skeptical about going to see the man responsible for executing Christians all around the Roman kingdom but God reassured Ananias that this was the plan in Acts 1:15 which says, “The Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel.” Saul (later known as Paul) was God’s chosen instrument but what does that really mean for you and me? 10

When an instrumentalist performs, the audience rarely praises the instrument. They applaud the performer. As an instrument of God we should not receive the admiration but God should. An instrument cannot make music on its own. It relies on the hands of a performer. Music is dreamed up by talented composers. On its own, a guitar can only sit somewhere and take up space but in the hands of our Heavenly Father we are guided and worked like an instrument.

Unless you break a guitar string, a guitar doesn’t stop making sound if it doesn’t like the song that’s being played on it. It doesn’t run out of the room if it doesn’t agree with the interpretation of music. I don't complain if the song is too difficult. Paul was God’s chosen instrument to the Gentiles in his day and he acted as an instrument should. He worked for the glory of the Performer. He relied on the power of the Creator. He didn’t complain if the song was too hard. Every one of us is God’s chosen instrument. The Heavenly Father lovingly chooses each of us to play for His glory. He works through each of us like instruments in various concert venues around the world and produces beautiful music.

DELNORA It remains the subtle entrance of a most noticeable person. You can’t help but to feel the presence of this award winning artist from Princeton, West Virginia. Once you say hello, the connection is solid… you are now a part of the incredible world of Delnora. Delnora has been performing her signature blend of roots, country, and folk music across the country since she was a teenager. Delnora released her first album, “Delnora”, while still in high school. After graduating from Princeton Senior High School, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Concord University in just two and a half years while also being named one of the 10 “Best College Entertainers in America.” It is in her blood, the long and distinguished family tradition in music takes you back before the Bristol recording sessions of 1927. Delnora is connected by family to the very first recording of country music,

14

that is fitting when you hear the music that flows from her, the tradition clearly continues. With an entire family playing and singing, music was always a part of her life. “My dad’s guitar and my mom’s piano were ever present,” shared Delnora. “My favorite songs from my great granddaddy’s repertoire of old time fiddle tunes were played at every family gathering.” What is most historically amazing is her great grandaddy’s “tunes” were the foundational elements that created the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress. It is the priority to honor that pedigree of music and calling from God that centers this incredibly talented artist. The focal point of her merchandise table is a pink suitcase, it is the same suitcase her mother carried to the hospital for Delnora’s birth. The suitcase sitting atop her merchandise table alone opens the doors to conversations, allowing you behind the scenes to the reason for the music.

Songwriting is as natural for her as writing a grocery list is for the rest of us. Taking ideas and inspiration from life, from joys and pains, and from trying to process all the feelings. “It’s often an untangling process between spirit and flesh, which is interesting,” expressed Delnora. This distinctive songwriting process includes being a natural at collaboration. For her, joining in a writing session gets the blood flowing, there is an excitement awaiting the words that will come alive on the blank pages. Once the words appear on the pages, the anticipation of God’s actions with the song is the best part of all.

Pulling from life experiences is the start of the songwriting and center of Delnora’s life is her two best fellas. First came Howie Acuff, the one whose calming presence and love is a quiet strength for her. A love that grows with each passing day. Then there is Timothy Alan “Reed” Acuff - who Delnora refers to as “Mommie’s perfect note.” The little man of incredible intelligence and insight whose existence gives Delnora the greatest job of all, the greatest blessing. We could fill the pages of multiple magazines in an attempt to share the Delnora story, then a few more for the Delnora Reed story, yet even more for the Delnora Reed Acuff story and even more needed on reserve in countless publications as the story continues. It is not different versions or brands of this artist to share, it is the remarkable existence of this anointed child of God who answered the call. The need to share all those aspects of this woman comes from the knowing that whether you are a friend having coffee, a listener at a show, in attendance at a service, at a soccer game, in a songwriting session, or sharing the microphone with Delnora - the outcome is all the same for you…YOU ARE BLESSED!!

BRUCE HEDRICK

There once was a young boy, nine years old to be exact, that came running into the room at the beckoning of his beloved mother. She was sitting at the piano as he entered, “Give me your little hands,” the mother stated. Without hesitation the little boy did as instructed placing his hands atop her hands. Following a fervent prayer by the mother over the life and hands of her previous son, it was time to learn keys G, C and D. The finale to this heavenly anointed moment were the words spoken, “Son, it doesn’t matter if you are singing or playing for one person or a hundred people; you sing and play with all of your heart, they will be blessed and God will bless you. “I remember her hands looked like they were on fire, so anointed by God,” reflected Bruce. That was the moment God’s destiny was made known to award winning artist Bruce Hedrick. His father

16

was a minister/evangelist and his mother sang. They bought Hedrick his first guitar at age 8 followed by his mom teaching the young man how to play the piano at age 9. Just a few years later when Bruce was just 13 years old, his beloved mother passed away. Years passed as they do for all, the joys and sorrows make their mark in our heart like a timeline written out. In 1995, Bruce met Lyndra and everything changed. By 1999 they were engaged, and in 2000 it was the start of the wedded bliss that has maintained their love story for over 24 years now. It was 2007 when Lyndra encouraged Bruce to return to church where he was inspired to sing, to spread the gospel in song. Playing the piano, guitar and singing with smooth traditional vocals that bring a sound of beauty to whatever genre chosen. Bruce’s love for Southern Gospel, Bluegrass and Country Music joins with his love of faith to ignite worship in your heart.

They say the best music comes from the songwriter with a gift of storytelling, the ability to create lyrics that come alive when heard. That describes the songwriting style of Bruce Hedrick. He finds inspiration in the world around him. Hedrick’s song, ‘Roses From God,” written and recorded many years back , it was his first Christian Country #1. That inspiration came from old roses his wife received on Mother’s Day. Bruce had taken notice that the fragile petals turned brittle with time. The lyrics tell the story, it becomes everyone’s story when heard. “I had the song. I had the lyrics. I had the music,” shared Hedrick about this inspiration. I never wrote a song that quick. I knew it was from God.” Lyndra, his wife, often shares the stage with him. Their love, faith and talents are on full display for the glory of God. There have been many songs, albums and awards…and still counting. For the artist himself, it is a particular place to perform his talent that makes him smile bigger than any famous stage in the world. It is the retirement homes, assisted living facilities, rehabilitation centers that Bruce makes a priority of his ministry. “They say I bless them, but they are a blessing to me,” said Hedrick. “When I play, the songs help them come alive and for a few moments they are not in a wheelchair, they are not sick. It blesses me.” Bruce Hedrick is one half of the DB Project, collaborating with fellow award winning artist Delnora. He lives today as per the instructions of his mother so many years back...whether he plays for one, a hundred or thousands, Bruce Hedrick plays with all of his heart and he is blessed.

The global pandemic paused the music industry for what felt like an eternity. Missing most during the time was connection, the moment artists meet, strike up a conversation, start friendships and collaborate professionally. Following the pandemic that paused live award shows and gatherings, the Inspirational Country Music Association held its convention in Sevierville, Tennessee, hometown of the legendary Dolly Parton. It was a week of music and connection, the who’s who of inspirational music were present. Standing in line on the red carpet, Greg McDougal, Bruce Hedrick and Delnora. Greg spoke to his friend Bruce saying, “Hey have you met Delnora?” What followed was an unbreakable friendship between three industry greats. Since that day, there have been many memories made in that trio, they have shared the stage, and supported each other both on and off the stage. Makes you think of a musical three musketeers…All for the ONE…ONE FOR THE ALL! Since that meeting, each has maintained a very busy schedule, recorded chart topping songs and received countless nominations and awards. Despite the tight friendship, consistent support and sharing, there had not been a music collaboration. Enter again the Inspirational Country Music Association as the ICMA president mentions casually that it would be wonderful to see a duet from Bruce and Delnora. That simple suggestion sparked a thought that ignited a conversation and now…an album…the DB Project. The project is the joining of two great songwriters, two gifted musicians, a duet of two anointed singers captured in a recording studio and shared on an epic, timeless album to be released this year. The blend of their individual voices has created a very traditional and unique country sound. It is reminiscent of the great country duets of Tammy & George or Loretta & Conway. In the same way, the two 18

voices are conjoined as if they are in fact just one voice. Within each of the songs, the clear vocals of each artist is mesmerizing while the sudden movement of voice pitch presents an unprecedented wow factor. It is hearing the timeless sound of pure country blended in voice and impactful in the lyrics produced by these two artists. We found ourselves attempting to sing along despite never hearing the songs before, it is just much more than a music collaboration. It is amazing, the lyrics are incredible and the music is spectacular…then comes the voices. Delnora is nothing short of perfect in vocal pitch and movement. Her style of emotional storytelling envelopes you! Bruce Hedrick brings a smooth traditional sound with unexpected vocal movement. His ability to converse with you in song is something you cannot get enough of. In each of the songs you are captured by the beauty just before you are overwhelmed by the blended sound. You will smile bigger than ever as you close your mouth post a jaw-dropping experience song to song. Coming this year, the DB Project! Don’t miss it! Connect with these artists, be a part of this historic collaboration! We are honored to announce this coming release and can’t wait for more to come!

RICHARD LYNCH Reaching New Heights..

REAL STORYTELLING

REAL HEARTFELT LYRICS REAL COUNTRY MUSIC Country Music Artist Richard Lynch has compiled a long list of country hits and chart toppers. His sound is reminiscent of the classics that started it all. In a world of fabricated country stars, Richard Lynch stands out in the crowd as a proud member of the last of a dying breed, the pure country music artist. He was only eight years old when he first appeared on stage. It would be his first time to see his father, Woody Lynch, perform in Dayton, Ohio with Country Music Legend, Porter Waggoner. During the performance, Richard was called on stage to sing and he belted out Buck Owens’ “I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail.” Living the life he sings about is what gives Richard the edge as a singer songwriter. In the fall of last year, Lynch released a song, co-written with James Erb, “High Above The Midnight Sky.” It is a testament to Lynch's faith and his dedication to spreading hope and love through his music. With each chord and every word, he expresses his gratitude to God and his fans for the opportunity to share his gift. This single release is included on Lynch's highly successful album, "Radio Friend," whose tracks have reached the UK iTunes Top 5 and charted on multiple radio airplay charts, including Cashbox, Cross Country USA, PowerSource, and more. Over the past 4 decades, Richard has compiled a long list of country hits and chart-toppers on both domestic and international sales and radio airplay charts. To kick off this brand new year, Lynch answered the call from Hollywood. Co-writing with Kenny Day an original song for the upcoming film “Kim Kahana: The Man Who Changed Hollywood. “Kim Kahana was an incredibly talented and influential figure in Hollywood, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to create a piece of music that pays tribute to his legacy,” says Richard Lynch. “I’m thrilled to be a part of this amazing project and look forward to sharing this song with the world.” The song is featured prominently in the film, which is expected in theaters later this year. Residing in Waynesville, OH, Lynch along with his wife, Donna are the owners of Keepin’ It Country Farm. Richard is also the co-founder of the Love Tattoo Foundation, which assists with veterans programs. In fact, his farm plays host to fundraising benefits for the organization featuring some of the biggest names in traditional country music. From Ohio to Hollywood, covering all the places in between and all around the country, Richard Lynch is using his tradition, real life country sound to engage, encourage, and love everyone. High Above the Midnight Sky" is available now on all major music platforms, and more details about Richard Lynch and his music can be found at http://www.richardlynchband.com. 21

Our theme this month is Guitars, Love Songs, and Christian Country Music, inspired by the country song… Guitars, Cadillacs, and Hillbilly Music. That brings on various images, memories and thoughts. Dwight Yocum painted a realistic picture of country music with this song. My first thought when I was told of this month’s theme was, "how does this relate to our music?" Our music to me first and foremost, is about the music style. I've always loved country music and in my case, I mean traditional country music. I'm a steel guitar, twin fiddles, telecaster guitar, Pig Robbins piano kind of a guy. In the beginning days of Christian country music our vision was country music with a Christian message. It's always been about the music and the message. I've never wanted that to change. We have a message in our music that's different from secular country music. We talk much about having the Gospel in our music and when we get religious we talk about our music as ministry. There is a ministry element in what we do but I've always felt for the most part, we fall more on the entertainment side of things. I realize some church folk get all fired up when I say we are entertainers more than ministers. I get accused of "rubbing the cat the wrong way!" My response to that; turn the cat around! Doesn't the world need good clean family oriented entertainment? Lord knows, much of the entertainment produced today is unwholesome and does more damage to our society than good. Recently a popular country music artist was drunk on the Grand Ole Opry, spouting vulgar language and making mockery of good country music and the Grand Ole Opry, and more than that a fool of herself. You get my point. So, let's give the world some great Christian country entertainment along with inspiration, and a message our culture desperately needs to hear. Now about the guitars and Cadillacs. I love great guitars and guitar players. Country music has a long list of great players too many to enumerate. Christian country music has some good ones as well. Thank God for all of them. About the Cadillacs? I love Cadillacs but frankly, I don't see many in the Christian country world. Our music unfortunately hasn't achieved the status to produce wealth like secular Country music has. Cadillacs are a great image but how important are they anyway? They are fun to think about though. Just make mine gas and not electric!! Cogitate on this.....

#THEGOSPELTRUTH

THE NEW YEAR... Many of us have said, “starting in 2024 I am going to ________” Why exactly do we do this? Is there some kind of magical time vortex wormhole kinda thing that happens when each New Year comes around? Is there something about the changing of one digit that gives us the power to make a life change? Well, of course not! The whole concept is absurd really. We tend to treat time as a marker for decisions and life changing plans, In reality, the Bible shows and tells us to do the opposite. Psalm 118:24 This is the day that the LORD has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it. Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Hebrews 3:7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts in the rebellion” Hebrews 3:13 Exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Matthew 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread…. James 4:14 What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. It is apparent from even these handful of scriptures that TODAY is the day. We often look ahead and seek some sort of time marker to set our life by. Perhaps, we as humans, think so small that we require a point in time to set our minds. The word of God is telling us that these decisions are for today. We do not even have tomorrow promised anyway. Tomorrow often turns into next week and next week into next year and so on. We often miss “today” because we are looking beyond what is in front of us in hopes for something better. We use the future as an indicator of improvement. Many of us have said “someday I’d like to _______” or “one of these days I am going to______”. Why do we say these things? Personally, I believe it could be several reasons. One reason could be FEAR, fear of failure will often stop us from trying to do better and be better. Another reason could simply be “laziness”. If we say we are going to “eventually” do something better with our lives, it kinda sounds good.

24

#THEGOSPELTRUTH Many times we are drawn into conversations with people who think this way and we join in. We will say “oh yes, me too! I hope by this time next year I will have that all sorted” But, if we do not start today, we are already a day behind. Life is happening now, it is happening in this very moment as you read these words. Tomorrow will come and go, maybe. Or maybe this is it. I think that is what the scripture is telling us. If you want to do something, do it NOW! Start NOW! Creating a marker in time “down the road” will never be a promise that you can keep to yourself. You’re already saying “I can’t do it today”, YES YOU CAN. If there is something in your life that needs to be improved, do it now. You do not need a new year or lunar cycle to help you. All you need is to pray and ask God for his strength to help you become better. He is there to help us when we seek excellence. Honestly, we rely WAY TOO MUCH on the NEW YEAR nonsense anyway. Do we really believe that something amazing is going to happen between December 31st and January 1st? Like some surge of incredible power and focus is going to kick in? Without prayer and seeking God's will in your life, any decision you make on any date will fail miserably anyway. God will never lead us by saying “starting in 2024 I want you to____” Nope. According to the Bible, everything was done on that day and in that very moment. Jesus never said, “I’ll get with you on some things after the New Year” When God laid direction on someone it was always right then and right there. Also, there’s nothing “new” about the New Year anyway, Ecclesiastes 1:9 says “what has been will be again, what has been will be done again, there is nothing new under the sun” This tells us that we are all in an inevitable loop of recurring themes if we do not move to break that loop. We must take today as it is and live it to its fullest. We must accept the blank canvas of today and paint it as a new masterpiece, leaving nothing to chance or question. Setting time markers simply will cause us to waste today in a false anticipation for tomorrow. Matthew 6:34 speaks against that philosophy. To sum up: Today has never been lived, it is a blank canvas for you to design. If you seek to put God first today and seek excellence in that God will bless this day and give you an increase. With each passing day that you live that way, you can increase more and more. The NEW YEAR has nothing to do with it. Be determined to live today and to change as your knowledge increases to do so. We all have plenty to keep us busy in the arena of self improvement, we do not need a calendar to help get started. The Holy Spirit is always speaking and moving on us to guide and direct, do not ignore him by saying “I will start and this time or that” START NOW!

I Cor. 13 - Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not Love, I am become [as] sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not Love, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and though I give my body to be burned, and have not Love, it profiteth me nothing. Love suffereth long, [and] is kind; Love envieth not; Love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Love never faileth:… 1. REAL LOVE DOES THE RIGHT THINGS FOR THE RIGHT REASONS: When I was little I use to watch the TV show “Leave it to Beaver”. Do you remember the character Eddie Haskell? He’d act one way around grown-ups and totally different around Wally and the Beaver! That’s called being two-faced or a hypocrite. Paul says real love does things from a pure motive and to do otherwise profits nothing! 2. REAL LOVE HAS CERTAIN ATTRIBUTES: Growing up in the deep south we’d say go get me a “coke” and anything cold and wet would do! Coke was a generic name for any kind of soda pop the local store had in stock! But the Coca-Cola company spends millions of $$$ to let us know that “Coke” is the real thing ®, “Coke is it!” Paul says real love has certain unmistakable qualities. 3. REAL LOVE STANDS THE TEST OF TIME: Paul concludes this wonderful chapter on love in verse 13 by saying that in the end there are three essential things that will matter – FAITH, HOPE and LOVE and the greatest of these is real love! I want you to know that God’s love for us is a love that endures, He always stands ready to forgive and to pardon if we will only turn to Him is trust and repentance. He only asks that you love Him enough to obey his salvation plan.

I am trying to be better than I was yesterday, I AM! LORD GUIDE ME, I know that I’m broken. PRECIOUS LORD, TAKE MY HAND and help me to SEE ME THROUGH YOUR EYES so I won’t tear myself apart for past and future mistakes. Life can be hard, but nobody said life was fair. If they did, then they lied. I can only do what I can and leave the rest UP TO GOD. When I get knocked down, I will GET UP IN JESUS’ NAME. When I’m asked how I persevere, I can say IT’S A GOD THING. He is my strength; I have none on my own. I can boldly say that WHATEVER LIES AHEAD, no matter what, I will trust Him. Even in my darkest hour when I can’t feel or see Him, I know HE’S STILL THERE. I promised Him a long time ago that no matter what happens in my life I will always come RUNNING BACK TO YOU! He is my Heavenly Father who loves me and encourages me daily, telling me YOU GOT THIS. He reminds me that hard times are a part of this world, but He has prepared a place for me where I will LIVE WITH JESUS. I can hear the angels sing, GLORY! No matter the question, He’s the answer to my needs. And even when I cannot see his face, He’s still reaching out for me… and ALL IS WELL. Suzzette Michaels Music

History of Palestine

by Rebecca Higgins

When we talk about Palestine there are two separate items to discuss. The area known as Palestine and then the people of Palestine (Palestinians). They have separate and largely unrelated histories. As mentioned in last month’s article, the Romans named the area that encompasses modern day Israel “Palestine” when the area became part of the Roman Empire in 40 BC. This was in order to replace the name “Judea” and make the province seem more Roman and less Jewish. The word is possibly derived from a Hebrew and Egyptian word “peleshet” which means “rolling or migratory”. It is associated most with the Philistines who are an Aegean people with no connection to Arabia. The Romans also had an area named “Palestina Salutaris” in what is now southern Transjordan. During the Byzantine period the entire former province was split into: Palestina Prima, Palestina Secunda, and Palestina Salutaris. Once the Muslims conquered the area it was simplified to “Filastin” and “Urdunn”. Reading the words aloud you can hear the connection to Palestine and Jordan. For English speaking people, the name came into common use during the Crusades and Europeans began calling the Holy Land “Palestine” more frequently during the Renaissance. When the Ottomans held the territory “Palestine” basically described their holdings south of Syria, but the locals referred to it as South Syria. The Ottoman Empire lasted from approximately 1517 to 1917. The use of the term Palestine never implied a boundary line. The people in the region, however, maintained their own identity. “Palestinian” was a catch-all term for anyone living there. Much as in modern times we might refer to someone as being from “up North”, which encompasses everything from stereotypical stoic New Englanders to our more excitable Jersey natives. The press would label Jews in the area as Palestinians, but Arabs were identified as Christian or Muslim and considered themselves to be Arab. Around the time of the British Mandate, after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the end of World War One, the notion of the area of Israel and Transjordan as being “Palestine” and the resident Arabs as being “Palestinian” began to coalesce. This was a political movement to stop any notion of a Jewish country being formed. However, Israel was indeed formed in 1948 at the end of World War Two. This is when the terms splintered off to their current definitions. The notion of a definitive “Palestinian” place and people, with those people being Muslim and that place being the borders of modern Israel came into being in 1964 in Cairo at the Arab League Summit. This was when the terror group Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was created with the goal of the “liberation of Palestine” and the destruction of the existence of “Zionism” in the Middle East. There were several subgroups under the nominal control of the PLO, but by about 1967 they all agreed on one thing – the destruction of Israel. This was actually included in the organization’s Charter. Yasser Arafat took control of the PLO around 1970 and began to use some political means as well as terrorism to achieve this goal. Many Palestinians had been given refuge in Jordan since the 1950’s. As the PLO’s popularity and influence grew among the Palestinian refugees, they instigated unrest and attempted to overthrow the Jordanian monarchy which led to their expulsion from Jordan by King Hussein in 1970. The PLO were then given refuge in Lebanon where they participated in the Lebanese civil war to overthrow the ruling Lebanese Government and launched numerous terrorist attacks into Israel.

30

These cross-border terrorist attacks resulted in several wars between Israel and Lebanon. Self-identified Palestinians were also causing internal trouble for the country of Syria. Entire books can be devoted to the terror caused by the PLO throughout the Middle East. In 1974, the PLO was recognized by the United Nations as the representative of the Palestinian People giving them a legitimacy on the world stage. Arafat began to “moderate” the PLO in public leading to some peace accords and in 1993 pledged to cease the PLO’s violence. But, his continued involvement in terror after 1993 speaks for itself. Yasser Arafat died in 2004 which saw a further fragmenting of the PLO into many different factions. The modern-day successor to Arafat’s “moderated” PLO is the Fatah political party. The followers that disagreed with Arafat and found his dialog with the West to be repugnant have gone on to join Hamas, Hizballah, or Islamic Jihad whose terrorism and violence continues to this day. A side note on the West Bank and Gaza: In 1950 following the Arab-Israeli war, Jordan annexed a part of Israel that was west of the Jordan River and controlled the area for 19 years. In 1959, the UN unilaterally decided to endorse this annexation deciding on the term “West Bank” for this part of Israel seized by Jordan. Although it was retaken by Israel in 1967 and Jordan renounced its claim in 1988, parts were given to the Palestinians under the Oslo Accords in the 1990s. When you hear the chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” this is the river that is referred to by the chant and the sea is the Mediterranean Sea. Were this slogan to come to fruition, it would completely wipe out the entire country of Israel so the true meaning of this slogan is not one of peace but of the complete destruction of Israel. Gaza on the other hand was under Egyptian control from 1948-1967. Palestinians were denied Egyptian citizenship, thus made stateless. The area became a giant and miserable refugee camp isolated from other countries and other Palestinians. The UN was also involved here. In 1967 Israel took over the area with 394,000 citizens. In 1987 Hamas was formed in the uprisings against the Israeli “occupation.” In 1993 the area gained semi-autonomy under Arafat and the Palestinian authority. In 2005 Israel left Gaza to allow the Palestinians to have full autonomy of the area. In 2006, the Gaza Palestinians held an election where a plurality of Palestinians voted for Hamas over the Fatah party to Govern Gaza. Hamas’ 1988 founding charter calls for the complete destruction of Israel as it’s central tenant. Since being elected into power in 2006, Hamas has not held any further elections in Gaza.

HONORING BLACK HISTORY MONTH

SONGS OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD - HARRIET TUBMAN Songs were used in everyday life by African slaves. Singing was tradition brought from Africa by the first slaves; sometimes their songs are called spirituals. Singing served many purposes such as providing repetitive rhythm for repetitive manual work, inspiration and motivation. Singing was also use to express their values and solidarity with each other and during celebrations. Songs were used as tools to remember and communicate since the majority of slaves could not read. Harriet Tubman used songs to communicate with slaves in their struggle for freedom. Coded songs contained words giving directions on how to escape also known as signal songs or where to meet known as map songs. Songs used Biblical references and analogies of Biblical people, places and stories, comparing them to their own history of slavery. For example, “being bound for the land of Canaan” for a white person could mean ready to die and go to heaven; but to a slave it meant ready to go to Canada. Tubman used “Wade in the Water” to tell slaves to get into the water to avoid being seen and make it through. This is an example of a map song, where directions are coded into the lyrics. These are the lyrics to “Wade in the Water” Chorus: Wade in the Water, wade in the water children. Wade in the Water. God’s gonna trouble the water. Who are those children all dressed in Red? God’s gonna trouble the water. Must be the ones that Moses led. God’s gonna trouble the water. Chorus Who are those children all dressed in White? God’s gonna trouble the water. Must be the ones of the Israelites. God’s gonna trouble the water. Chorus Who are those children all dressed in Blue? God’s gonna trouble the water. Must be the ones that made it through. God’s gonna trouble the water. Chorus

Are you struggling? Even in your walk of faith? He's not surprised. He Knows exactly where you are, and the good news is that He Loves you too much to leave you there! He is more sovereign than your circumstances and much stronger than your struggle! He knew you needed a Savior a long time ago! I want to tell you about some of the tools that He's been using to work in your life all along. His Word. His People. Circumstances that He allows. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure. Philippians 2:13 I hope to help you with worship. He's given me a message to remind you that He’s building you...in His image... Faithfully...with Love... Grace... and forgiveness! Teaching you how to, more fully, trust Him... It is Him at work winning you over to agree with Him more than you ever have before! It's no small thing! It's God's Math! He Provides! And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for thee, that thy fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. Luke 22:31

TOP 10 REASONS FOR CO-WRITING I can’t tell you how many times I've heard “I’m good enough to write by myself, I don’t need a co-writer to take half my money” or something along those lines. Have you ever stopped and taken a look at how many hits are written by only one person? The answer is very few. If you are one of those people who would rather just write by yourself and don’t like the idea of collaborating, let me point out a few reasons why you may want to reconsider and step outside your comfort zone. 1 - First and foremost, if you don’t read anything past this, please let this sink in. If you are not in the room writing with the Singer or the producer your chances just went down about 95% from the much less than 1% chance you had to begin with. Most artists are encouraged to co-write these days or at least attempt to do so, often so they can participate in the income. Meanwhile most producers are double dipping as songwriters so they can make money on that end as well. If you are writing by yourself, neither one of those options are available for them. 2 - For every person in the room writing with you, your odds of a cut go up because we all have our personal connections that we are working, in hopes of finding that song a home. 3 - Having other people in the room makes it easier to pinpoint mediocrity or a line that has already been said in other recognizable songs. Same thing goes with melodies. You may not recognize the melody infringement, but another co-writer may have a better shot at pointing it out before it’s too late. 4 - If the other writer has a staff deal and they play your collaboration for their publisher, it may lead to questions about who the co-writer was and possible interest in a future pub deal for you. 5 - Most people are better at either lyrics or melody, not kings or queens of both. If you are a killer lyricist but limited on your chord progressions or explosive chorus capabilities, it may behoove you to add a topnotch musician to the writers table. If you are a great melody person but struggle to come up with unique ways to put your thoughts to words, reverse the process.

34

*Note, if you are simply a poet you may want to add both a lyricist and a melody person to the table, as poetry is not the same thing. There is typically no recurring section in a poem (chorus) and no vocal lift. Also being overly poetic and getting too far away from what you would say in an everyday conversation can backfire on you. 6 - Even the best writers in the world tend to have a certain style that they don’t stray very far from. This means you have a strong chance of having your songs sound alike and people getting bored of your same progressions and limitations. It’s refreshing to get in the room with writers of other genres and expand the depths of your catalog. 7 - You never know which writer is gonna have a breakout hit. Even if it wasn’t on a song you co-wrote, at least you have that working relationship going if they’ve been in the room with you before. It’s near impossible to break into a writer’s camp AFTER they are already on a roll. 8 - You can always learn from someone else. None of us know it all. There are tricks you can pick up from other seasoned writers that you may never have thought about. Stay attentive and soak it up like a sponge. 9 - If your main goal, like most writers, is to get a publishing deal…you MUST be able to co-write with others. Most publishing companies have a Creative Director that puts you in the room with people they think you would work well with, normally someone else signed to their company, so they keep all the publishing in house. If you are not able to easily collaborate with others, they won’t want to renew your contract at the end of the year, if you make it that far. 10 - Networking. One of the fun things about Nashville songwriting is the Social media pic afterwards. The more pics of your pretty or handsome face being flashed around the internet with other artists and writers, the more people will want to work with you, as they see you are a go-getter trying to make it happen. Now get out there and book those co-writes, brew that coffee and make stuff rhyme:) - CLB

AUDIE BLAYLOCK Life long bluegrass singer and bandleader, passed away unexpectedly in January at his home in Auburn, IN. He was 61 years of age. Known in recent years as lead singer and guitarist with his own band, Redline, Blaylock dedicated most of his adult life to bluegrass. Born in El Paso, TX, Audie grew up in Lansing, MI, where he was playing guitar and mandolin in regional bands while still in school.

DIRECTOR BRINGING LIFE OF KING DAVID TO AMAZON PRIME

The director behind the highly successful faith-based film, Jesus Revolution, is bringing a new series about the life of King David to Amazon Prime Video. Director Jon Erwin and former Netflix executive Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten have co-founded The WONDER Project, a faith-based, values-driven movie studio. According to a synopsis given to the Hollywood Reporter, the series "follows the once-mighty King Saul as he falls victim to his own pride. A prophet prepares to overthrow him — anointing the outcast shepherd boy David as a second king. As Saul's fury grows, David navigates love, violence, and politics in the court of the very man he's destined to replace. Two kings. One Kingdom. The outcome is war."

One of his crowning achievements was as coordinator of the album, A Tribute to Jimmy Martin: The King of Bluegrass, on which Audie covered a collection of Martin classics with some of the top musicians of the day in 2004. The album was nominated for Grammy award, and Audie was justly proud of having been able to re-present the music of his hero and mentor for a modern audience. Playing the Opry with Rhonda Vincent and sharing the stage with Andy Griffith was another career highlight, as Griffith was another hero to Audie. Memorial arrangements to be announced by family at later date.

HYMN

75TH ANNIVERSARY OF HYMN

The English version of the hymn “How Great Thou Art” turns 75 years old in 2024. Swedish pastor Carl Boberg wrote the original lyrics in 1885. It was translated into Russian, where English missionary Stuart Hine heard it while in Ukraine in 1931. He wrote two new verses (3 & 4) and translated it into English in 1949—which is the 75th anniversary. “How Great Thou Art” has ranked as one of the most popular hymns around the world for decades, only rivaled in reach by “Amazing Grace.” While many old hymns are often adapted and reworked by new artists, the rights to “How Great Thou Art” are held by the Stuart Hine Trust, and the hymn isn’t part of the public domain. For this reason, the song has had few renditions beyond its original lyrics.

”I cry out to the Lord; I plead for the Lord’s mercy. I

pour out my complaints before Him and tell Him my troubles. When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn.”

Psalms 142:1-3 We all struggle with questions that can hold us back, keep us down, and drown us in our own thoughts if we choose to let them. The Heavenly Father invites us to pour out all of our doubts, worries, and struggles to Him so that He can renew our heart, soul, and mind as well as direct our paths to the abundant life He wants to give us all. I pray this song serves as a reminder that though we may struggle with stinkin’ thinkin’ we can choose to take those thoughts and questions captive by calling out to Heaven so that we can be renewed in the likeness of the Heavenly Father. J.E.S.U.S SOME LOOK, BUT OTHERS SEE When you look at people, do you see the real potential that lies within them? Can you see the potential, the wisdom and knowledge that they possess? Can you see their life experiences and how it can enhance your life? Is it possible for you to see the beautiful treasure that is hidden beneath their scars and wrinkles, their brokenness, hurt and pain? Most people don’t have a clue of the treasure that lies dormant inside of them. Truth be told, most of the time we don’t even know of the hidden potential that is within ourselves. I heard a story about an old tree, and the story was told by Dr. Myles Monroe, in his book Maximizing Your Potential. It reads,” In the back of a beautiful old mansion stood a huge tree that had been there for over a hundred years. The plantation owner had decided to cut it down, and as they were cutting down the tree an old sculpture was passing by. He stopped and asked the plantation owner; can I have a piece of that tree? The plantation owner looked at the tree and said to the old man,” that tree is old, and it is no good for anything, but the old sculpture asked again. The plantation owner said to the old man, “this tree is old and rotten, and it is not good for anything,” the old man asked again, and the plantation owner finally said yes, and gave the old man his wish. The old man placed the piece of wood on his shoulder and headed off down the road. When he got home, he placed the piece of wood in the middle of the floor, and he attacked the wood with his tools, and he labored all that night. A week later, the plantation owner was coming down the road and as he passed the old sculpture’s house, he saw on the porch of the old sculpture the most beautiful carving of a bird that he had ever seen. He stopped and said to the old sculpture,” How much do you want for it’? I must have it, it’s the most beautiful carving I’ve ever seen. They entered into an agreement, and the plantation owner went down the road with his beautiful sculpture and he was so happy. What had seemed to be a useless piece of wood, was now a valued piece of artwork. The moral of the story is, “Some look, but others see.” Michelangelo said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved it until I set him free.” Every block of stone has a statue inside it, and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.” Every person is like that block of stone, there’s greatness inside, but it must be carved out. We pass hundreds of people every day, we look right at some of them and judge them as insignificant and worthless. We look at individuals out of the same mindset as the plantation owner in the story, looking at the old tree, how shallow we are when we can only look at the exterior of a person. There is an old saying, “you can’t judge the book by the cover.” But some of us do. In the 16th chapter of the book of 1st Samuel, is a story of how God chose King David to be king over Israel. If you will read the story, you will get the full account of how God looks on the heart of man and not on the outward appearance. Let me explain. Samuel looked on the outward appearance, but God said to him in verse seven. “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical statue, because I have refused him”. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart. God is not impressed with outward appearances.

54

He does not choose people because people “dress the part” or wear “power clothes.” In this society, image is everything.” However, with God,” image means nothing. “For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” God does not see things as we do, he looks beneath the surface and sees what is in our hearts. God wants us to learn to do the same. In fact, our wisdom is measured by the extent to which we see as God sees and understands the principles by which he governs the moral universe. To gain wisdom means to learn to think God’s thoughts after him, placing high value on the things He values and despising the things He despises. The only way we can ever learn to see things as God sees them, is to look on the heart and discover the true motive and meaning behind the obvious, but possibly deceptive outward appearance of a person or situation, is to refuse to make judgments based upon those outward appearances. If we will seek God and ask him to reveal what lies below the surface, he will give his wisdom to us and we will then be able to make wise judgments and decisions. We look, but God sees. Currently, it is possible to do organ transplants. With the use of technology, we can transplant any part of the body to another body, but God is the only one that has ever completed a brain transplant. Philippians 2:5 says,” let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus. God can place the mind of Christ Jesus in you. Just like the old tree that was being cut down looked worthless to the plantation owner, we can look at others in the same manner. But, when we look at others with the mind of Christ, the worthless and insignificant person becomes a valued treasure and precious in God’s sight. Those of the world may have looked at you and called you worthless, but God looks at you and calls you a precious treasure. My friends, look beyond the visible, and see the invisible, move beyond the impossible, and see the possible, remove the barriers of your limited understanding, and see others as God sees them. Fearfully and wonderfully made, Endowed by the Creator Himself. Be encouraged my friends and ask God to help you see out of His eyes, we look, but He sees.

It all starts with God. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. ~ Matthew 22:37-40 God has a plan for each of us. We all have a purpose - to love God and to love people. We are to glorify God in all that we do as we represent Jesus Christ in our world. We all have God given gifts that we are called to use toward the fulfillment of our purpose. Growing up in rural Alabama, Suzzette’s gift of vocal ability became apparent early on. As a young girl it brought her to Nashville where she pursued a career in country music. Within a few years, with Paul Overstreet as her producer, Suzzette signed with Warner Brothers Records. Her desire was to perform music that brought a positive message to her listeners, a difficult feat in the competitive world of country music. Although Suzzette’s years pursuing secular music were challenging, she looks back on that season of her life and sees God’s hand at work. It was a time of education and growth that would equip her for the next chapter of her life. It was a time of prioritizing. It was a time of aligning her walk with God’s will. Heeding God’s call, Suzzette was soon making plans for her first Gospel album, God Is Good. This was the beginning of a ministry which has now spanned twenty-five years. In addition to her music, Suzzette began writing as another means of telling God’s story. And in more recent years Suzzette has developed another of her artistic outlets… oil painting. What began as a hobby soon became a passion, and once again she felt God’s hand guiding her talent. Suzzette now incorporates her artwork into her ministry, painting scenes that communicate God’s love and grace. Suzzette recently released her fifth studio album, All Is Well, which she feels this is her best project to date as she has continued to mature as a songwriter, an artist, and in her Christian walk. Today Suzzette lives outside of Nashville with her husband, Mike, and dog, Sugar. She takes her ministry on the road when called, performing concerts at churches and other venues. Throughout her career, these personal appearances have been the highlight of Suzzette’s ministry. They allow her to use her gifts to glorify God and tell the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Established as a Trading Post in 1849, the Post Office/ General Store/ Beer Joint, was first opened in 1886 by August Engel, an itinerant preacher from Germany, who’s daughter Minna chose the name Luckenbach in honor of her fiancé, Albert Luckenbach. The Trading Post catered to pioneer farmers and Comanche Indians alike. A steam-powered cotton gin was built on the banks of Grape Creek in 1879, and operated with varying degrees of success until it finally closed in 1929. By 1885, the community boasted a blacksmith shop and a consolidated school. There was even a local legend— Jacob Brodbeck, who is documented to have flown a heavier-than-air craft decades before the Wright Brothers. In 1970—Luckenbach, which remained in the hands of the Engel family the whole time, fell into eclipse. Benno Engel retired as postmaster and placed an ad in the local paper: “TOWN FOR SALE” —lock, stock and dancehall. Luckenbach was purchased by a collection of only-in-Texas characters—Hondo Crouch and his cohorts, Guich Koock and Kathy Morgan, who had what might charitably be described as overactive imaginations. Hondo imagined it was an old west fairy-tale-like principality and gave everybody titles. He formed a make-believe town and proclaimed himself Mayor. Hondo’s business cards read “Imagineer,” and people began to fall under the magical spell of Luckenbach. Hondo Crouch, white hair and beard, battered cowboy hat, faded jeans stuffed into his boots and red bandana loosely circling his neck, Hondo philosophized, whittled, told stories, and sang Mexican and cowboy songs. He'd accompany himself on his old guitar, always somewhere within reach. In 1973, Texas country-rocker Jerry Jeff Walker came to Luckenbach to record an album. Four years later, Bobby Emmons and Chips Moman – penned an idyllic ode to the burg—“Luckenbach Texas (Back to the Basics)”—which became a massive hit for Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson, bringing Luckenbach to its ultimate worldwide fame. Tour buses and tourists from around the world make Luckenbach a regular stop when visiting Fredericksburg area attractions, such as: The Admiral Nimitz Museum, Enchanted Rock State Park and the L.B.J. Ranch in Stonewall.

STAGE Tips STYLE

In the early days of country music, most singers opted for a more casual style. Performers, such as the Carter Family, generally wore simple dresses and suits. As country music artists moved into television and film, the simple garments would become exaggerated. Sparkle on the fabric came due to be seem, it has been said the sound systems back in the day were so bad, the outfits had to be loud to accommodate the audience not hearing the music. The ultimate key to style on stage is to be a genuine reflection of the artist. Personal style without allowing that look to distract from the music, most important the message!

Top Tips 1. Don’t be a Blackout 2. Costumes are cool 3. Wear your Brand 4. Comfort is the Conversation 5. Fit is Key 6. Simple is Spectacular 7. Express Yourself 8. Don’t Outshine your song. 9. Read the Room 10. Presentation is Priority.

Don’t be a Blackout Wearing all black may of been good for Johnny Cash, but that was his brand and let’s be honest only he could carry that! Black is a great backdrop color, it hides stains, even wrinkles but make sure you are adding some color to your black on stage. Just a little color changes the disappearing that black will cause in video and photography.

Costumes are Cool Have a little fun with your stage style. Costuming is the foundation of many famous artists. Planning your stage outfits to be completely different or an exaggerated version of your style is wonderful.

Wear your Brand Pay attention to your brand, your music and make sure to bring your fashion on stage forward with the same look. It’s okay to wear your logo, name or brand colors on stage. Share it whenever and wherever you can!

Comfort is the Conversation You may look amazing in those brand new boots or high heels, you may also pass out from the distraction of pain during performance. Flipping off your shoes during the show will work for some venues but not the middle of a church. Most important is that comfort will allow your performance to flow without interruption.

Fit is Key Clothing must fit, not too small or too big. So many factors, like look, comfort, presentation come into play for this one tip. Wear the correct size, make the fit appropriate for your age, look, brand, venue and performance.

Simple is Spectacular Don’t stress about it - simple is always great. When the outfit chosen fits well, works with the venue, event, artist or brand, the need for extravagance is eliminated.

Express Yourself Something in your style needs to be about you only, maybe your guitar pick or accessory, just make a piece or item of your stage style uniquely you!

Don’t Outshine your Song Wearing an outfit or shirt or anything that takes away from your music is a big no! Wearing you favorite team on stage may be fun, but for the fans of the opposing team it distracts from your music. Be aware!

Read the Room Always plan according to you venue. For instance don’t wear blue to a performance at the convention of people who love red. Coordinate with your room, if you are a more folksy but the venue is pure western...go west with your wear!

Presentation is Priority Most often your walk onto the stage is the first impression anyone will have for you, all happening before your perform. Be aware of your look, the way in which you present. Prepare and Be Confident! Let your light shine!

ON THE ROAD READS Instant New York Times Bestseller! The Bible is full of “love” stories. But the Biblical idea of love is so much bigger than we imagine. Love is at the heart of the Bible. From the moment Adam declared Eve “flesh of my flesh”…to the sacrificial love of Joseph for Mary…to the deep friendship of David and Jonathan…to the abounding and neverchanging love of God: The Bible is a love story. But it also redefines the way the world tells us we should think about love. The Bible reveals not just butterflies and broken hearts. In Scripture, we see God’s beautiful design for the partnership of marriage. We witness friendships that cross all boundaries. We watch as families navigate the many seasons of life. Our guiding example for them all is the deepest, most abiding, foundational love ever known: God’s unconditional love for His people. In The Love Stories of the Bible Speak, Shannon Bream draws lessons from the good, the bad, and the ugly of Biblical romances, friendships, and families. She shows how God’s love is often very different from ours, turning upside down our assumptions about life, relationships, and each other. The Love Stories of the Bible Speak reminds us that, no matter where we find ourselves, God’s unwavering love will sustain and guide us. These insights into biblical relationships will uplift and encourage you, and reveal new dimensions to the most central Christian duty: to love God and your neighbor.

A Florida native, she’s drawn to the sun and the beach where she grew up with parents who convinced her anything was possible. Their lives were modest, but they believed in the power of: education, hard work and faith. Though she now spends her days covering politics and the United States Supreme Court, Shannon started her career as a sexual harassment attorney. She counts it a great privilege to cover the news of the day at such a pivotal moment in history. It wasn’t an easy journey from attorney to journalist, and she was actually fired from her first reporting job. That boss told her, “You’re the worst person I’ve ever seen on TV and you’ll never make it.” Used to being the underdog, Shannon took that as a personal challenge. First, as a reality check to assess her skills and decide how she could improve. Second, to test the limits of what she could accomplish in the face of such a dire prediction. From competing in the Miss America Pageant to running a marathon, she’s developed an attitude of persistence. The refusal to take “no” for an answer has come in handy as she chases politicians around Capitol Hill and digs to get to the root of the story. It was also critical when she confronted a life-changing illness and had to fight to become her own medical advocate in order to find a diagnosis and a strategy for living with chronic, crippling pain. Amid the swirl of troubling news from around the globe, her faith is her greatest comfort and hope. Away from work, Shannon enjoys running, fly fishing, reading and travelling the world with her partner-in-crime: her husband, Sheldon. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Liberty University, a former Miss America finalist and earned a Juris Doctorate with honors from Florida State University College of Law.
