Artist Spotlight

Hailing from a small southern town, Brandon Rowell grew up playing guitar, the love for music never left him. There was a time that other things distracted the man and the music, the usual suspects of temptation took hold but change came, a miraculous change.

“Music has the power to transport us to another time and place, ” shared Brandon. That power was in need as Rowell would find his health failing due to substance abuse at just 21 years of age. There was the inspiration of not having his young daughter grow up without her father, plus a nudging from the Heavens that brought the needed change to reality. Jesus was calling and Brandon Rowell answered!

That was then…today, Brandon is a father, husband, pastor, singer, songwriter, and musician who harnesses that power of music to transform all who listen with the Word of God! The music that has the power to wipe away your sins, transport you to victory and healing and put you in a place of peace - that is the Brandon Rowell Music Ministry!

Rowell’s latest release “By And By,” from his album, “When I Was Little,” debuted on the Power Source Christian Country Top 40 in November 2023. Rising each month to land #1 March 2024!

Congratulations Brandon Rowell!! We can’t wait to hear more and more from you!

WOMAN. DAUGHTER. MOTHER…WARRIOR OF FAITH!

She is a warrior, she is a fighter, she is bold and outspoken. She is resilient. She is a daughter of God. She will not fail!” - words spoken on April 4, 2024 by recording artist, entrepreneur and musician, Christi Joy Cargil. She began singing at the age of nine and later began playing the guitar at the age of twelve. With a passion for writing songs at an early age, Christi wrote her first song “Heaven” at the age of twelve. Growing up in a Christian home, the daughter of pastors, she was trained in ministry throughout her childhood and taught music by her Mother, Sandy.

Christi Joy Cargil is made of music, the lyrics of her life include traveling and ministering alongside her family as a teenager. Her life melodies express spiritual gifts and the honor of witnessing miracles and healings throughout life. Each life note is full of love, hope and strong faith.

The life song of Cargil can be summed up in the words found in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”

Every great song is a story, Her life song is no different, it has all the components of a chart topper, with plot twists, unexpected crescendos and octave changes that at times would disrupt the music, however, the notes are perfectly timed and collectively make it an epic tune.

11

On April 4, 2024, Christi Joy Cargil said it in her own words, “As I was writing in my prayer journal today. The scripture is Esther 4:14 and today is 04/04/24. There is a significance in God directing me to this passage on this very day. Remember that everything that happens, happens for a reason. Nothing is just coincidence. If you let God lead you and guide your footsteps, everything aligns the way it is supposed to in His divine timing. The scripture quotes. - "Perhaps this is the moment for which you have been created". Perhaps today is the day God created you for. Whatever purpose He has for your life. I pray you see it so clearly. I hope you see what God sees within you. Perhaps this is your day to fulfill your destiny, just perhaps. In Jesus name may you see your value and your purpose.

With a calling that continues to evolve, her passion for the lost is what you notice most. It is not just those needing to know about the loving God awaiting to offer salvation to us, it is everyone in any spiritual stage that experiences a “lost” moment. Those who feel a loss of faith, loss of hope, loss of love, just any experience of feeling LOST. Today her music is a continued pursuit of that passion, writing hundreds of songs. With significant experience recording with her family in Nashville alongside many Southern Gospel greats, her first solo release and one of her proudest, “Destiny” has already touched thousands of lives.

“Destiny,” is a powerful message of hope, faith, and purpose and explores one's identity in Christ. One conversation or meeting with this gifted woman lets you know that she wrote each lyric with a heart focused on giving hope, sharing love and encouraging all who hear it to keep the fight toward the destiny that God designed for them.

The song is her proudest moment to date musically, in life it is the three beautiful girls that fill her world. The octave change in her voice when speaking about Motherhood cannot be missed. She is fully engaged in the blessing of all that encompasses being “MOM.” Following her on social media, it is those three girls, sharing the faith message and passing on the music that fill every post. Not just her music, but teaching the next generations how to play music fulfills a part of her destiny. She was created for this moment!

WOMAN. DAUGHTER. MOTHER…WARRIOR OF FAITH!

At the start of our journey with Christi, we requested that she grace the cover of this publication, as we felt she encompassed the M.O.M - Made of Music theme best. Typically, we do an interview process, including an emailed series of questions to cover the usual. But this time, it changed for us as we wanted to share this cover artist from our perspective. Now that we have shared the basic info about Christi Joy Cargil, let us give you the amazing, faith powered woman/mother we have come to know.

It is the voice that comes out in your first conversation, it is a strong, confident, and pleasant tone filled with what can only be described as the grace of God in vocal notes. Instantly, all that may have filled your mind that day, that may have been a stress, is gone and you are lost in her spoken words. You are overwhelmed by the love coming through, and taken in by the excitement she has for the opportunity to just talk and listen to you. Somehow, she is able to listen to every single word you say, retain the information and yet, without pause respond in a manner that fills your heart. You know there have been times of struggle, experiences that hurt in ways that only our Heavenly Father is aware of. Yet, what comes through as she shares any of it, well it is HOPE. Most amazing is that when she talks about times that would break others, she injects triumph over it or the work in progress in such a way the hope fills the breath between words.

Personally, I would imagine that she could calm any life storm with just her voice. Then let us talk about when she prays for you. At the close of any conversation, she prays for you in a way that makes you feel the unconditional love of God physically. You know that you are in the throne room and she is leading the command of promises for your life. Then comes the humble heart as she closes with gratitude for that moment in time of conversation. The bible tells us that Music is intentional, designed by God to move both spirit and mind. 1 Corinthians 14:15 “What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also.” The relationship between the Word of God and music is undeniable. In those biblical days as in today, music is often how the message or truth was delivered as it impacts the heart and soul of the listener. Music is also how we retain the foundation of God in our daily lives. Think about how many times a Sunday school song, hymn or faith song comes to your mind in moments of celebration or sorrow.

That in a paragraph is what makes Christi Joy Cargil, our M.O.M.

As we use this month to celebrate the “MOM” in our life, many of us have different definitions of that title. It may be our natural mother, or adoptive mother, or person/friend representing that within our lives. No matter who has the title, it is the love that we share with them that carries us through any and all of life. With a calling to the gift of using music to share the unconditional love of God with the world, Christi has devoted her life to spreading it to every heart that she encounters.

This Mother’s Day and all that days around it, Power Source Magazine salutes our M.O.M - Made of Music CHRISTI JOY CARGIL. facebook.com/christijoycargillmusic

Faith Women ELIZABETH

Elizabeth was the mother of John the Baptist, the wife of Zechariah, and maternal aunt of Mary, mother of Jesus, according to the Gospel of Luke. She was past normal child-bearing age when she conceived and gave birth to John. Elizabeth’s pregnancy was seen as miraculous since she had been barren for so long and was far past childbearing age. While this miracle was big news, and proved God fulfills his promises, Elizabeth kept the pregnancy quiet.

Part of the angel Gabriel’s message to Mary was to go and see Elizabeth. When Mary visits Elizabeth, the unborn baby, the future John the Baptist, joyfully leaped within her womb in response to the presence of the unborn Messiah. Mary stayed with Elizabeth until John the Baptist was born.

Through the life of John the Baptist’s mother, Elizabeth, we can learn to stay faithful amid hard times, trusting God’s timing and promises with worship, praise, and faithfulness. This grows our character and gives us the greatest of joys when we see God show up in our lives and the lives of others. John grew up to live in the wilderness and became a prophet calling people to repentance and baptized people as a sign of washing from sin and returning to God, hence the name John the Baptist. John also foretold the coming of the Messiah.

Elizabeth’s faithfulness and the miraculous nature of John’s birth are powerful examples of God’s intervention and purpose in human history.

Finding Strength To Carry On

A Life Made For More A Life Made For More A Life Made For More

The other day I was observing a musician performing live. I was amazed at how they seemed to get so much more out of the instrument that they were playing than a lot of other people I had witnessed. Then I thought to myself how much time, effort, and energy had this musician poured into their craft and how much of it was their giftedness? What if I consistently tried to achieve such a level with my own talents throughout my own career…isn’t that something we should always do as followers of Jesus?

Colossians 3:23-24 says “Whatever you do, do your work heartily as for the Lord”

That includes career, talents, hobbies, etc. How easily we forget that we were made for more. More than the social media hits that we do or don’t get with each post we make. More than the time we waste on things of lesser meaning or purpose. More than the egos that we wear as a badge of honor.

Every person, regardless of their season of life, has God-given potential. There is someone the Heavenly Father has called all of us to be and something He has created us to do. He has created us for more holiness, fruitfulness, better relationships – He has called us to Kingdom living here on earth.

Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.”

18

Is the environment in which you currently find yourself limiting the gifts the Heavenly Father has given to you? Is it limiting what He wants to do in and through you? Have you settled for less in your job, relationships, etc.? Just getting by is not what the Heavenly Father wants for you - He wants abundantly more for you. He made you for more! He can do more in us and with us when we make ourselves fully available to Him.

Most of us only use about 10% of our capabilities from day to day. However, the Heavenly Father has more in store for us. It’s time for us to stop procrastinating and making excuses! It’s time for us to pursue the gifts, dreams, callings, etc. He has a place in us and for us. What is on the other side of your more? You won’t know until you try. As you step into your gift, dream, or calling, before long you will think to yourself “Man, why didn’t I do this sooner?” How do I know? Because this is exactly what happened in my own life when I became serious with the Heavenly Father and stepped into the abundant life He wanted for me all along. Does it mean that life is a breeze, and everything is easy, and I don’t get frustrated? Not at all.

Psalms 40:2 says, “He has my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked.”

What has this meant for me? As a follower of Jesus, it is that above all the hard times, the difficult decisions, and constant distractions, and as I walk in the abundant life He has for me, that He works in and through me. He guides me with His discernment and wisdom. As long as I keep walking ahead with my eyes on Him, I experience what Kingdom living here on earth looks like. In the Lord’s Prayer we pray His will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. We are right here and right now in training to learn how to live in His Kingdom in Heaven.

Every one of us has potential to grow and to become more like Christ. As followers it is our responsibility to keep seeking, keep growing, and keep going. So, what do you need to do to step into the life you were made for – a life made for more.

It may sound radical, but it’s truly not a new thought Isaiah 42:14 is where we find the Prophet Isaiah describing God as a woman in Labor. Isaiah 66:10-13, he continues this description with a mother who nurses and comforts her child. Jesus did the same in Matthew 23:37 and Luke 13:34 as He compares God to a mother hen who gathers her children under the safety of her wings.

Personally, it is easy to relate to a God who watches, comforts, labors, and shelters her children. I am a mother and I know that God created me in my mother’s womb just as he created each of my children in my womb. Additionally, I fully relate to being both mother and father as God is to each of us daily. If you are not experiencing this type of parenting from our Heavenly Father - keep reading, it is not something you want to miss, it is a blessing beyond description to be Mothered by God.

Recently, a level of pressure and stress climaxed for me in extremes. I found myself alone physically and unable to calm. It was crying that usually is attached to significant grief, it was hysteria It was emotional, spiritual and physical it was horrific! The surprise is that I never felt alone, there was a strange undercurrent of peace.

Reflection brought me to my boys, who being active and always outside growing up, basically just being boys doing anything would often lead to a screaming, crying boy running toward me. There was no way to understand them, communication was limited either by age or their hurt. So just like all the other mothers in the history of time, I did the breakdown:

Questioning What, Where, How?

Hug, Kiss and Comfort!

Remove clothing/shoes to find hurt?

Hug, Kiss and Comfort!

Reach out to others/siblings/friends to determine hurt?

Hug, Kiss, and Comfort!

That is what God did to me that day…the breakdown of getting to the hurt and covering me with love. Did you notice that my breakdown and that experience from God did not include blame, judgement or shame!

To be Mothered by God, is the experience of getting to the root of what is hurting. It is to be covered in the unconditional love of a God that will never leave you nor forsake you. It is the moment you understand that your faith is a relationship with God, it is okay to not know what to do with the hurt. Our Heavenly Father acting as the Mother will do the breakdown, walk beside you holding your hand, pick you up to carry whenever you cannot walk on your own and will love you always.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Ministry Moments

KELLY CRABB KELLY CRABB KELLY CRABB

Power Source Magazine recently took notice of a series of social media posts by Kelly Crabb that serve to encourage, challenge and empower us all. Words that apply to everyone, encourage all walks of life and serve notice to remind fellow ministries that we all walk by faith not by sight

We are honored to share this with you and encourage all to support this powerful ministry. Not to mention their music is a must not miss a note! Power Source, A Ten Fifty Seven Media Magazine salutes Kelly Crabb and The Bowling Sisters.

If you have been awake in the world of Christian Music for the past countless decades, the Crabb name is well known to you Each member of this legendary family hosts generations of devotion and excellence in music ministry. Kelly Crabb and The Bowling Sisters combine talent, sincerity and experience to ignite your faith Power Source, A TenFiftySeven Media Magazine Salutes Kelly Crabb! Thank you Kelly for sharing your walk by faith!

Ministry isn’t always a sold out crowd, a green room with fabulous snacks, or people standing in line to buy a ticket.

It’s that sometimes, and I’m the most thankful person on the planet when it is I’m not one to throw around the “favor ain’t fair” term a lot. I think social media is so misleading. We post our GOOD days in hopes that life will look perfect We’re all guilty, including myself

I attended a weekend theology retreat with Lisa Harper this past weekend prior to heading out to sing It was so good

One of my pages of notes is about this: He’s the formula for getting through Lean into Jesus It’s that simple Lean into Him It’s the only thing that will carry us through it all Views and likes won’t do it Man’s approval won’t do it

We post our pretty days, our perfect make-up, never the ugly, never the ”I’m so hurt I can’t get up and wash my face” moments

We had a major bus breakdown 2 weeks ago We’ve had a series of calamities amongst the “Praise Night” crew I won’t list them all, but they’re serious things.

Jab like gut punches I know my girls are watching us, specifically me they’re watching me through one storm, into another, into another

They’re watching the hand of God keep us. Up close and personal. They’re riding in a car, not a bus. No way to sleep. No way to be comfortable

Mom & Steve gave us their bus for the weekend, and ..wait for it. It broke down in Olive Branch, KY .night one. New engine. Still broke down. Now this isn’t my bus, it’s the #2 bus on the tour that belongs to Mom & Steve.

What did we do? Again We figured it out

They could’ve brought us a bus from Nashville, but there wasn’t time to make our date. We don’t cancel dates. We were raised to show up no matter what you gotta do

So John rented a U-Haul and a car.

We had very little sleep because of the breakdown, but we loaded this crew and went to West Virginia to tell people that life isn’t perfect

And to tell them that there are no favorites.

Things break People walk away ,and life sometimes hands us lemons

But God is EXACTLY who He says He is.

We got home about 4 am This crew is wiped out But we’re safe We had wonderful services This thing we do commonly call a “calling” is truly without repentance I enjoy the BIG things, but as far as I know God didn’t call me to impress, He called me to be faithful.

So if you’re like me having a reflective Monday with a few aches and pains a bit of sadness that engines cost $48,000 to purchase and install let’s encourage each other

We will make it

Remember, the struggle is the blueprint for others

Let’s be the proof that it’s possible to go through the fire without being consumed God is for us, so who can be against us?

“CLEAN YOUR TOILET”

Colossians 3:23-24

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the lord not to man, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

This one of my favorite scriptures of all as it depicts the challenge to excellence. If we had this thought process in our minds, to do WHATEVER as if unto the Lord, We would all be much more efficient and much more intentional. But what does this mean? What is this challenge trying to get us to do? Personally, I believe this command is showing us how to develop a habitual life of excellence.

If we were to truly do ALL things as if unto the Lord, we would strive for perfection in all things Matthew 5:48. Also in James 1:4 it says that if we believe that we can obtain perfection then we will obtain it. There are a myriad of scriptures in the Bible pertaining to striving for and obtaining perfection. This should be the goal of ALL Christians as we are under great attack by the world through culture and society.

Society teaches us that the mundane and the “close enough” is out right and should be respected. This nonsense is the trigger for the upside down society that we live in today. However, God knows that this type of mindset is unstable ground. It is in our nature to gravitate to excellence. We naturally seek it out. This is why these scriptures are there, to teach us how to create a life of excellence so that people will come our way. True leadership is not in telling people “what to do” but, it is in showing them how to live so that they will seek it out naturally and gravitate towards us. If people see that in us and come our way, it is much easier to witness to them and direct them to the truth of Christ.

So, with that being said, how do we proceed with this habitual life of excellence? Honestly, it may very well start with your toilet. If we are to do WHATEVER as if unto the Lord, then what about that toilet? See, some of you reading this may very well be that person who will leave their toilet in such a condition that it takes acid and steel wool to clean it. Some may clean it weekly or whenever it shows signs that it needs something done. However, if it were to be done “unto the LORD” it would literally be spotless at all times!

Why is this a big deal? Here’s why, if you can’t keep your toilet clean then I would assume your bathroom is a mess. If your bathroom is a mess then I would assume most of your house is a mess. If your house is a mess then perhaps your yard is not so great. If your yard is in shambles then most likely so is your car. If your car is a disaster then so is your workplace and so on…..

It all starts with the simple things that very few of us pay attention to. When we do ALL THINGS as unto the Lord, we will create a habit of excellence that will flow into all areas of our life. As it begins to flow throughout our lives, people will pay attention and gravitate towards that beam of excellence.

#THEGOSPELTRUTH

#THEGOSPELTRUTH

So many of us focus on the “achievement” as opposed to the journey. The apostle Paul describes this life as a “race” in Hebrews 12:1. This “race” is to be seen as a competition with ourselves and it is unto death. This means that our journey is never complete. However, we often focus on the achievements rather than the journey. When we get stuck on the “achievements” we will often seek the next “achievement”. The journey of life is not about achievements but rather about improving ourselves daily.

Focusing on achievements will often cause us to not complete tasks as well. Once the dishwasher is loaded then we often feel like the achievement is complete. This is why so many HATE to unload the dishwasher When the theory of “journey” would cause us to see it to the very end and seek the next step in the journey. I realize that using loading the dishwasher as an example for biblical excellence seems ridiculous, but it is not! Remember, “WHATEVER” you do!!

This word ‘WHATEVER” is designed to push us towards a habitual life of excellence. If we were to truly do ALL things in life as if they were for God himself, it would literally change how we clean that toilet. Change that and more tasks of excellence will follow.

Here’s the crazy thing, doing all things as if unto the Lord is actually EASIER! If we do all daily things as if unto the Lord and truly focus on the journey, we would find that the workload becomes lighter, not heavier. Is it easier to spray a little cleaner, run a brush through the toilet everyday or to get on our knees and scrub for 30 minutes because company is on the way??

The Bible knows how to point us in the direction of a lighter burden in life. Seeking to do ALL things for his glory is easier and we get his blessings in the end. It doesn’t get much better than that.

New Army Post Names New Army Post Names

In 2023 the US Government began renaming several military bases in the United States and abroad. The move has not been without controversy, but the military has forged ahead as ordered. Worthy individuals were chosen for the new base names, but like anything new, the transition will take some time to get used to, especially for those who served at the posts, bases, and installations under the old names. (One point of trivia – the Army typically refers to their installations as “Posts” and “Forts” while the Air Force, Navy, and Marines typically refer to their installations as “Bases”.)

Here are a few of the most notable name changes you are likely to see in the news: Fort Hood, Texas, is now Fort Cavazos. Army General Richard E. Cavazos fought in the Vietnam War, earning the Distinguished Service Cross. He is our first Hispanic four-star general and a Texas native. He had an outstanding career and in addition to the Distinguished Service Cross, earned a Silver Star and 5 bronze Stars during his service in Vietnam. Fort Cavazos is home to an armored division and other units.

Fort Gordon, Georgia, is now Fort Eisenhower. The base hospital was already named for our former president and five-star general. Eisenhower was the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe during World War 2. Fort Eisenhower is the home to the Army Signal Corps and the Cyber Center of Excellence.

Fort Benning, Georgia, is now Fort Moore. This fort was named after Army Lieutenant General Hal Moore and his wife Julia Compton Moore. He spent 32 years in uniform and was a Korean war veteran and most famously a Vietnam war veteran where he earned a Distinguished Service Cross. Julia Moore was an advocate for soldiers and family members with her actions leading to the modern systems of casualty notification and family support. General Moore’s story was told in the book We Were Soldiers Once and Young co-authored with Joseph Galloway. Fort Moore is known as “The Home of the Infantry” where infantry basic and advanced courses are taught for officers and enlisted soldiers.

Fort Bragg, North Carolina also known as “Home of the Airborne”, is now Fort Liberty. This was controversial in some circles as the Army airborne community had produced many fine soldiers since WWII who could have been memorialized. General Ridgeway, of the 18th Airborne Corps, and General Gavin, of the 82nd, were each considered. This base is home to the 82nd Airborne, and the 18th Airborne Corps, as well as the Army’s Special Forces.

Fort Polk, Louisiana, is now Fort Johnson. The former Fort Polk is now named for an African American WW1 Sergeant and Medal of Honor recipient. SGT William Henry Johnson’s actions in the Argonne Forest were recognized by the posthumous award of the MOH in 2015. While on night sentry duty, May 15, 1918, Johnson and a fellow Soldier received a surprise attack by a German raiding party consisting of at least 12 soldiers. While under intense enemy fire and despite receiving significant wounds, Johnson mounted a brave retaliation resulting in several enemy casualties. When his fellow Soldier was badly wounded, Johnson prevented him from being taken prisoner by German forces. Johnson exposed himself to grave danger by advancing from his position to engage an enemy soldier in hand-to-hand combat. Wielding only a knife and being seriously wounded, Johnson continued fighting, took his Bolo knife and stabbed it through an enemy soldier's head. Displaying great courage, Johnson held back the enemy force until they retreated. The enemy raid's failure to secure prisoners was due to the bravery and resistance of Johnson and his fellow comrade. During his fight, Johnson had sustained over 21 wounds that greatly contributed to his poor health until his death in 1929. Fort Johnson is home to the Joint Readiness Training Center and the 10th Mountain Division’s 3rd Brigade Combat Team.

Fort Rucker, Alabama, is now Fort Novosel. This honors Army pilot Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael J. Novosel. He is a Medal of Honor recipient for saving 29 soldiers under fire during a medevac mission in Vietnam. At the age of 23, Novosel had flown the B-29 Superfortress bomber during WW2 and later flew helicopters in Vietnam. During his service in Vietnam, he flew 2,542 extraction missions and rescued over 5,500 soldiers. He was 47 years old when he saved those 29 men in Vietnam. Fort Novosel is a training base for pilots and crews.

These are the six most famous Army bases that were renamed of the nine that previously honored Confederate generals. Renaming each installation was estimated to cost around $21 million dollars each.

There are some places that are a little less well known that were renamed as well. For instance: Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, is now Fort Walker. Fort Lee, Virginia, is now Fort Gregg-Adams. Fort Pickett, Virginia, is now Fort Barfoot. Of course, these “new” names are due recognition as well. Dr. Mary Edwards Walker was the first woman surgeon in the Civil War and the only woman awarded the Medal of Honor. LT Gen Arthur J. Gregg enlisted as a private in 1946 and retired 36 years later as the highest-ranking black officer in the US Army. LTC Charity Adams was the first black officer in the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in WW2 and led the first Black WAAC Unit to serve overseas. Tech SGT Van T. Barfoot is a Medal of Honor recipient from the 45th Infantry during WW2.

Thule Air Base, Greenland is now Pituffik Space Base. This is an odd one because it was not named for a person. “Thule '' in classic Greek/Roman literature is the most northerly location mentioned in their writing. The word tended to mean a place past the “borders of the known world”. Which, to be fair, northern Greenland is way away from just about anywhere. “Pituffik '' means “the place the dogs are tied” and is a native name for the region. About 600 people are stationed there.

Watch and listen for these new names in the media. As the transition has been made, some media outlets have been using both names but that will stop as we all get used to what the places are called. Now you know the person behind the name and why they were chosen to represent the soldiers, civilian workers, and families that are stationed at each place.

WROTE A GOOD’N.……….. WHAT NOW? With Corey Lee Barker

We talk a lot about writing songs and what happens in the room, but we rarely discuss what needs to happen AFTER the song is finished. It never hurts to have a checklist of questions to answer upon completion, so we don’t let our song get lost in the shuffle or expect things from our co-writers that they did not think about or agree upon.

Here we go:

01 - Do we know our writers well enough that we don’t need to sign a split sheet? Almost every song written in Nashville is an equal split but some writers are very finicky about syllable counts or how much of the song they had finished before they brought it to the table, so you may want to discuss before registration.

02 - Did one of us make a work tape and share it with the group, so we don’t forget the melody and lyric cadence.

03 - Did we go back over the work tape with fresh ears and make sure we didn’t mis phrase anything? Too often the demo singer will copy how we did it and repeat our mistakes. This has made me pull my hair out more than once and kick myself for not doing my due diligence!

04 - Did I make sure one of us collected all the writer and publisher PRO info and entered it on our PRO website (BMI. ASCAP, SESAC, etc.?) This wasn’t a big issue until the song got cut in the past, but now that BMI live and Ascap onstage exist, we can register our live set list online after we play out and collect royalties on songs we wrote / co-wrote. If we have not registered the songs then there is nothing to track and we are leaving money on the table.

05 - Have we discussed a way to demo the song if necessary, and how to split the cost? Some writers may be very prideful and angry if you don’t want to invest in a demo because, naturally, it’s the best song ever, while other writers realize that they can’t possibly demo all the songs they write or their spouse would kick them out of the house for draining the bank account:)

06 - Have we discussed which recording artist the song is perfect for and how to get it to said person?

44

07 - Did we research the track record of said person above and make sure they don’t co-write all their songs, as many artists do? Otherwise we may be paddling up creek with a wet bread stick as an orr:)

08 - If one or more of us is an artist, have we discussed who gets the right to release it first, if that’s something we care about. (More versions mean more money, typically, but if we are both releasing at the same time and competing in the same genre for chart position, it may be wise to re-think our plan.)

09 - If we wrote the song for a tv show, did we check out the show on tunefind.com and listen to the songs they’ve used in previous seasons to make sure our production vibe will match what they are accustomed to? Note: you can’t pitch a work tape or demo to a tv show. They don’t re-record anything, so what you send is either perfect to go into the show or it doesn’t work.

10 - If the song was recorded, assuming it was already registered, did we send an email to revisewroks@bmi.com or the appropriate email for our PRO if we are not with BMI, to let them know the name of the artist that cut it, the release date, label, time, ISRC code, etc.? They don’t magically know who has recorded our song.

11 - If we own our own publishing, did we also register the song at themlc.com so that we can collect our money for digital plays (Spotify, apple, amazon, deezer, pandora, Youtube, Qobuz, Tidal, etc.) This has nothing to do with sales, strictly streams (within the United States).

Creation is only a small part of being a successful songwriter. Cataloging, marketing, researching and organizational skills also play a big part in getting you where you want to go. Don’t be afraid to google, youtube, or ask a more experienced writer/publisher questions if there’s something you need to better understand. By the time we almost figure it out, it all changes anyway:)

Best of luck my friends - Corey Lee Barker

THE DUST IS GONNA FLY THE DUST IS GONNA FLY THE DUST IS GONNA FLY

I love to clean the house, but I hate to dust! Give me a toilet brush instead. You get instant results with that. But not with dusting! Just the other day when I was cleaning, I looked up and there it was. I could see dust flying right back to the same spot it just left. Yep, it doesn't like to be disturbed, so it takes off in flight and lands everywhere you've already cleaned. Ugh!

I've learned a secret though, keep the blinds closed and you can't see the dust. But oh my gosh, open the blinds and let the sun in and BOOM, it glows!

So here I am looking like Luke Skywalker doing battle with my swiffer sweeper in hand. I fly around the room trying to catch every little particle I see. My mind tells me this is useless! I question why I'm putting all this effort and energy into a battle I can't win. This is no fun and it's hard work. It's like digging a hole while the dirt falls back in. It never goes away. These little boogers are persistent! Did I mention I hate to dust?

I'm finding that my sweet Heavenly Father has a sense of humor. He has many ways to get my attention. How he uses everyday life to speak to me is amazing and kind of funny. This just happened to be one of those days.

He showed me that I too was in need of a little dusting… a little heart dusting. Things in my life that were collecting dust and taking up space in my heart. Things that kept showing up when the light hit them. Stuff that I had hidden away for one reason or another. Things that I thought were too hard to deal with. Or I felt I couldn't change it, so why bother. Stuff I've hidden so far back into my heart because I was too weak or scared to deal with them. Those things that I had put aside in hopes that they would go away. I was closing the blinds to my heart so I didn't have to look at them.

But the good news is my God likes to dust! (Better Him than me.) He gently takes my hand and leads me through the cleaning process. Just like I like a clean house, God likes my heart to be clean. What makes it even better is that where he cleans the dust doesn't come back. He knows that with a clean heart Satan has no ammunition to use against me.

Nothing that he can bring up to bring me down. So, with swiffer sweepers in hand, we go to work. And no speck of dust will be safe!

John 15:1-3

I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.

HEAVEN

things like floating on a cloud playing a harp of gold shouting holy, holy, holy.

Songs have been written about heaven talking about mansions or a cabin in the corner of glory land. The Bible does talk about mansions built for us but I’ve never read anything about a cabin in some remote corner of heaven.

Not a lot has been taught about heaven. Not many details seem to be known. I’ve heard some people say if heaven is just playing harps and laying around on a cloud, they aren’t very interested in doing that. I’ll admit, that does sound pretty boring. Especially if we are doing it for eternity! Somehow I have to believe that heaven will be much more than that.

I’m reading a book that has opened my mind and my expectations about heaven to the point that I’m really excited about being there. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in a big hurry to go, but it is intriguing to think about the possibilities and the excitement of what awaits. To say nothing of being reunited with loved ones and friends there. Beyond all that, the best thing will be to finally see the face of Jesus! He will be the focus of heaven.

There is an old saying that says, “don’t be so heavenly minded that you’re no earthly good”! I know what people mean by that but I’m not sure if we can be too heavenly minded. After all, that is our destination as a believer. All our dreams will come true there. Our problems, our sufferings, our sorrows will not exist there! Heaven should be on our mind and should be something we’re constantly reaching for.

Some are really concerned about no longer being married to our earthly spouses in heaven. The church, the body of Christ, is the bride of Christ so we’ll be married to Jesus in heaven. That freaks some people out. Maybe if you’ve had a bad marriage here you are looking forward to no longer being married to your spouse! However, if you’ve had a wonderful marriage here you may be confused and concerned about how things will be in heaven.

56

I don’t understand how all of this will work but I believe one thing. There will be no disappointments in heaven. There will be no unhappiness, no regret and no longing for things to be the way they were on earth. We cannot imagine how fulfilling heaven will be. God is a God of love and loves us more than we know. He will not take anything away from us.

He is a giver, not a taker. That alone tells me we don’t have to worry or fret about the marriage issue or how we will spend the endless ages there. There’s no need to fear being bored or to fear not enjoying our activities there. You ain’t gonna be disappointed! I believe heaven will be busy with exciting activities. With our new bodies we will be able to travel the universe and galaxies. I believe our activities will be a continuation of what we were passionate about here on earth.

I love motorcycles. I believe I’ll have the motorcycle of my dreams there! Your mansion will be designed according to your tastes and desires. It will be the home of your dreams!

Most of us who read this publication are singers and musicians. I believe we’ll be able to sing like we’ve always wanted to sing, to play our instruments like we’ve always wanted to be able to play. Most importantly, it will bring great glory to God. Everything we do there will bring glory to Jesus and be directed to him.

Most of us have been taught to believe that heaven is off in the distance somewhere in a far distant place. I no longer believe that. In Revelation it talks about a new heaven and a new earth! Heaven is coming back to earth! It started in the garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were supposed to spread haven all over the earth. However, they sinned and the curse came and stopped the growth of Eden. God had to lock that place and post angels to guard the gate.

When the earth is renewed, whether it’s burned and purified by fire or some other way, the garden will be worldwide and we will live here. We’ll be in charge of taking care of the garden and things will be as God originally intended! This earth is full of beautiful sights. If you’ve seen the Grand Canyon or the Rocky Mountains or Niagara Falls or any of the wonders of the world, it’s hard to imagine more beauty than that. But when the earth is made new it will be free of the curse for eternity and God’s beauty will be magnified many times over! It will take eternity for us to explore and enjoy it’s majesty!

So where do believers go now when they die? it’s called Paradise. At least that’s what Jesus said. He told the thief on the cross, “today you’ll be with me in paradise.” That’s where our loved ones who’ve gone before us are now. I believe it’s a temporary peaceful place with God, where they rest and enjoy God’s presence . The author of the book I’m reading calls it the Present Heaven.

I’m certainly not an authority on this, I’ve just really been motivated to learn as much as I can about heaven and to be excited about it. I highly recommend the book Heaven, by Randy Alcorn. He also has several Youtube videos you can check out.

Heaven is something to be excited about. I’m excited. Are you?

Cogitate on this.....

CHILDREN

Superbook Reaches Millions of Kids for Christ

CBN Animation's Superbook has led the way for millions of children to accept Christ, and Superbook is growing with a popular kid's Bible app and website as well as work in new languages. Children's ministry leaders say ages four to fourteen is the age when people are most likely to accept Christ as their Savior.

Ben Edwards, CBN International vice president, says Superbook reaches children at those key ages. "It targets kids at a time in their lives where it's so important to reach them with the Gospel," he said. "A critical time for them to understand there's a God who loves me, there's a God that wants to have a relationship with me and there's a God that died for me. So, it's an incredible time to minister into kids' lives."
