Artist Spotlight

Hailing from Lexington, Kentucky - Singer/songwriter Anne Wilson knows the healing power of music firsthand. The lyrics of Hillsong Worship’s “What A Beautiful Name” became a lifeline for the Lexington, Kentucky native after her brother was tragically killed in a car accident at the age of 23. Although she spent much of her childhood behind a piano, Wilson sang in front of an audience for the first time at her brother’s funeral. It was at that moment that she realized what she was born to do. With a mesmerizing voice and a visible hunger for Jesus, the 20-year-old relies on personal journal entries and time spent in nature for songwriting inspiration. “Hey Girl,” was released to Christian radio in September 2022, as the third single from her debut studio album, My Jesus. The anthem style song for all girls of any age was penned by Wilson along with Jeff Pardo and Matthew West. The song has three versions, one specifically called “The Kentucky Version." With an overwhelming reception by audiences on all platforms, the single “Hey Girl” debuted on the October 2022 Power Source Christian Country chart at #31 followed by a staggering climb to #1 on the November 2022 Power Source Christian Country chart. Her song, “My Jesus,” charted on the Spotify Viral 50, Shazam Top 200, and Rolling Stone Top 25 Trending charts. Her story was also featured with the Religion News Service and The Washington Post. She made her Opry debut on the iconic stage in September 2021. Wilson was featured in Billboard Magazine as the October 2021 Chartbreaker artist, and Wilson's “My Jesus” received a 2022 Billboard Music Award for “Top Christian Song” of the year. Power Source, A TenFiftySeven Media Magazine salutes ANNE WILSON and “HEY GIRL” – we are excited to see all that the future holds for this incredibly talented young artist!

New Year Goals for Songwriters

It’s easy to set goals for yourself, and you should. But what if we had a different set of goals that simply benefited others? What would that look like? What could we do to help others in our field? With this thought in mind, I created a list of 10 New Year’s goals (charitable thoughts/resolutions) that perhaps we could keep in mind for the upcoming year. 1 - Repost a song we hear that we love and had absolutely nothing to do with its creation. 2 - Introduce our favorite co-writer to other writers who could use their help. Perhaps they are a fantastic musician, and you know a writer who is only good at lyrics.Couldn’t hurt to make that introduction. 3 - “If” finances allow, perhaps surprise your o-writer with a demo they did not know you were paying for, or put together a lyric video for YouTube to help pitch it. 4 - Pitch a friend’s song to an artist you have a close contact with (provided it’s a strong song). You don’t want to burn any bridges:) 5 - If you’re good at creating banners for Facebook or other websites, perhaps create a collage of someone else’s cuts and surprise them with it. 6 - Do a quick video announcing the release of a friend’s cd, or even just an artist that you love whom you’ve never met. Everyone appreciates support. 7 - If you’re out to eat at a restaurant and there’s an entertainer, tip them like you wish you were tipped every time you play. 8 - Spend a little time mentoring writers who are not on your level of achievement yet. Help them not make the same mistakes you did and possibly shave some time off their journey to success. 9 - Go support some of your fellow writers a little more often, even when you’re too tired to make it out of the house. I struggle with this one because I love the feel of my couch after a long day, but I know how much it means to have an active audience showing the love.

Corey Lee Barker

10 - Instead of simply telling someone their song isn’t strong enough, maybe take the time to offer suggestions of how you would approach it if it was your own, to possibly make it more universal and commercial. *By no means should we forget to set our own personal goals to help keep us accountable for dream chasing, but it doesn’t take much time to add on a few more that aren’t self-serving. If everyone did the same, we would end up being blessed anyway, if Karma has any say in it.

RICHARD LYNCH

Over the past 4 decades, Richard Lynch has compiled a long list of country hits and chart-toppers on both domestic and international sales and radio airplay charts, including multiple #1 iTunes chart singles. He has recorded popular duets with legendary artists like Ronnie McDowell and Leona Williams, as well as Grammy Winner, Rhonda Vincent. Richard Lynch is a proud member of the Ohio Country Music Hall of Fame and the Independent Country Music Hall of Fame. Lynch is also the owner of Keepin’ It Country Farm in Waynesville, OH and co-founder of Love Tattoo Foundation that assists veterans. Richard Lynch was only eight years old when he first appeared on stage. It would be his first time to see his father, Woody Lynch, perform in Dayton, Ohio with Country Music Legend, Porter Waggoner. During the performance, Richard was called on stage to sing and he belted out Buck Owens’ “I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail.” That moment inspired him to pick up the guitar, learn chords, and later form a three-piece band with friends in high school. “Our first paid gig was a wedding in 1978, we knew nine songs,” said Richard, “once we played those, we just played the same nine songs again and they still paid us.”

“It is personal to me, the song, Radio Friend,” reflected Richard. The mid-tempo song that starts with guitar mixing in piano and drums is a memorial to close family friend, Ray “Chubby” Howard, the great radio broadcaster and steel guitar hall of famer who passed away at the age of 95 in 2021.” It was the final words of a retiring DJ that inspired the lyrics to paper, “If I don’t see you on the air, I will see you in the air,” heard by Richard Lynch resulting in the unplanned 20 minute songwriting of “Radio Friend” a laidback, mellow, and heartfelt country track that is a tribute to radio DJs everywhere. The single released in 2022 debuted and continues to repeat placement on the Power Source Christian Country Top 40 chart.

Every word and chord that he has sung and played over the years has been accompanied by a note of gratitude…gratitude to the many radio DJs who have aired his songs; gratitude to his fans for requesting the songs and buying the tickets; gratitude to his co-writers and musicians who have helped shape his brand of real, traditional, and authentic country music; and gratitude to God for blessing him with family and a life doing what he loves doing the most; writing, recording, and playing country music. On the other side of the guitar, Richard Lynch remains the proud farm boy, he enjoys the farm life and has created a way to combine his passions. Six times a year, he along with his wife, Donna host a show in the Big Barn. “Traditional Country Music and farming go hand in hand,” said Lynch, “we bring the music to the farm, it’s always an incredible turn out.” So many ways to describe this Waynesville, Ohio Farmer, he is a singer, songwriter, musician, entertainer, husband, father, grandfather, and friend. “For me, I would describe myself as a simple man,” said Lynch, “plant some corn, harvest, put in the freezer to have about January, that is a good life.” On January 20th Richard Lynch will release his latest collection of original songs, the album “Radio Friend” containing 12 songs. Taking inspiration from classic country artists like Keith Whitley, Conway Twitty and George Strait. It’s quite evident that he likes sticking to the raw, natural, acoustic sound of the roots of country music, making his music very refreshing and engaging. 11

REACTING… Never in the history of the world has knowledge and information been so abundant and easily accessible. We are educated by many sources whether we seek it out or not. Information comes to us from everywhere.

I am a man. I was born a man, in God’s image.

The media is a constant source of information. However, the disturbing thing to me is at some point, the media decided to influence our sensibilities of right and wrong. It seems they have an agenda to make wrong become right, right become wrong, and when there is resistance to that, to judge those resisting as intolerant and hateful. Morality is constantly being redefined and our life principles questioned and ridiculed.

I’m attracted to a woman, not a man. God made me that way.

In recent years, I’ve struggled to sort out my personal feelings and emotions concerning some of these issues. I’ve never been a hater and I’ve become increasingly annoyed at Evangelicals who lash out hatefully at the LBGTQ community. I recognize the utter failure of the church to show God’s love to those people.

I believe when we accept His love, it changes us.

Social media is constantly flooded with haters who condemn anyone who doesn’t believe like they do. How do I react? Should I speak out?

I don’t let my feelings control me.

Recently on one of the Sunday morning television shows, I watched a story about a Hollywood star who is producing a movie about a husband and wife raising a young transgender son. The producer in real life is a gay man married to a man. The director was born a girl and later became a man and of course the movie is portraying the story as perfectly normal life in America. Really? C’mon man!

When I’ve done all to stand, I stand.

I know right from wrong. I love God, family and country. I want everyone to know God loves them as they are.

It’s God’s job to change people, not mine. My responsibility is to love, not to judge.

When things stress me, I rest in Him.

If you don’t agree with me, I’m ok with that. I’m not right about everything. I have many flaws and imperfections. In the end, I believe the truth will prevail. The truth will set us all free and bring perfect peace. We have that to look forward to. Peace.

I’m trying not to let me emotions motivate my feelings here. I’m a seeker of truth and I’m trying to figure out how to react in love and at the same time not let my moral compass be disoriented. I’d rather not have to deal with any of this but it’s a reality we have to fade.

Cogitate on this…

I have many questions. Should I speak out? Is it time to draw a line in the sand? There are lots of things I don’t have figured out, but I feel I need to reaffirm a few things. 13

Godly Woman AS By KristeNicole

I flip through the pages of my brand new 2023 planner and write-in those special birthdays, anniversaries, events, etc. that I need to remember and want to acknowledge, I feel a sense of excitement for what the days and weeks may bring.

For me, a new year is a new chapter in my story of life, especially if the previous year was tough or full of disappointments. With the beginning of a new year, I like to get back to the basics. One of the ways I do that is to measure my accomplishments vs. goals during the previous quarter. These goals include three categories: personal, business, and faith goals. Personal goals apply to my family and lifestyle while business goals help measure progress, direction of a company, and improve long decision-making. Faith goals are very different in that these goals are inspired by the dreams and visions A during time spent in God places on your heart His presence.

16

John 3:6 says, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh: and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

Faith goals not paired with genuine faith can kindle an inner emptiness once the goal is achieved. However, if your dreams, visions, and goals, are inspired by God, they will count for eternity and last forever. That, my friend, is true legacy and Kingdom work all at the same time!

If I am in the process of setting new faith goals and I don’t exactly know what those look like, I like to jump into the book of James and return to what I call my Retro-Faith. It is there I get back to the basics that were established at the beginning of my walk with Jesus. I get out of the thought process, that we all too often default to, of thinking we can outwork our faith because we live in a society that says we need to be stressed or busy to be important. To practice Retro-Faith means re-establishing the essential practices and perspectives of what it means and looks like to be a follower of Jesus. Retro-Faith is not about developing new spiritual disciplines but rather intentionally looking back to the cross and renewing our

spiritual disciplines but rather intentionally looking back to the cross and renewing our faith with the practices we have already developed in our journey.

As Christ followers we may fall down or lapse into sin. But, we are able to find our way back up; when the Spirit of God lives in you, someTHING and someONE has happened to you that won’t let you stay in sin. Hebrews 5:9 says, “And having been perfected, He became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey Him.” Being a Christ follower is not praying magic words for us to get our “Heaven Ticket” and live however we please. Being a Christ follower means being a person who follows Jesus in all we think, say, and do. Matthew 7:21 says, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of Heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in Heaven will enter.” We do not possess Biblical faith just because we profess it but because of our daily obedient lives we give back to Him. The practice of

Retro-Faith means taking time to look backward and see that our Heavenly Father has been there, providing for us and giving us strength when we felt like there wasn’t any at all. Retro-Faith also means a time of spiritual celebration. We are told several times throughout the Bible to celebrate and remember the things that God has done both in our history and own personal lives. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us we can look to the future and know God has given us a hope. James 4:8 says, “Come close to God and He will come close to you.” Jeremiah 29:13 says, “And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” Chris Stapleton sings a song called “Starting Over” and it proclaims: This might not be an easy time There’s rivers to cross and hills to climb And some days we might fall apart And some nights might feel cold and dark But nobody wins afraid of losing And the hard roads are the ones worth choosing Some day we’ll look back and smile And know it was worth every mile If you are in a tough season, if you need to start over, or if you just need to get back to the basics and practice some Retro Faith, the good news is it is a road worth choosing. Our Heavenly Father will welcome you back and help you become the person He created you to be. He will help do the things which He has created and equipped you to do. As the last part of the verse in starting over goes…Someday we’ll look back and smile and know it was worth every mile.

#THEGOSPELTRUTH

THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE

By Shane Roark

Why do we lie? It’s possible that most of us lie without realizing we are lying. In today's society a lie is not actually a bad thing when used to keep from hurting someone's feelings. However, everything in all of society is based on “feelings” these days. So, it's nearly impossible for us to NOT lie unless we want to hurt someone's feelings. Whew, it’s exhausting! The government lies so the public won’t freak out. Teachers lie so a student won’t feel bad and fall behind. Pastors lie so they won’t lose big tithers. Husbands lie so their wives won’t get angry. Wives lie so their husbands won’t get angry. Employees lie to avoid a manager's wrath or to perhaps avoid responsibility. Managers lie so their employees won’t know that they’re often the reason something went wrong. Many gospel singers…. well, just lie. Hey, I could go all day like this and exhaust myself typing examples. Let’s see what the Bible says… Proverbs 6:16-19 There are six things that the lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies and one who sows discord among brothers. John 8:44 You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your fathers (the devil) desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Ephesians 4:25 Therefore, having put away falsehood (lying), let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. John 8:32 And you will know the TRUTH, and the TRUTH will set you FREE!! As we can see here, the bible is plain about lying.

18

#THEGOSPELTRUTH Recently I made a post on Facebook about being personally lied to. I had several people comment with things like: perhaps they changed their mind and forgot to tell you, maybe you misunderstood them, maybe they didn’t mean to lie. Nope, they lied. In today's society, lying has been watered down to such a misdemeanor with God that it's as common as walking, blinking and breathing. It is now being taught that “honesty” can hurt feelings and therefore “honesty” is more damaging than the lie itself. This is simply NOT TRUE. Nowhere in the bible can you find an open door invitation to willfully lie. However, you can find MANY MANY references to “keeping your mouth shut”. Don’t want to lie? Keep quiet. Stay out of it. Hush up. Shhhhh…. Most people in today's world will have open conversations and assume that the other person would not dare break the code of “political correctness”. However, on a lot of occasions, political correctness has also been used to mask “lying”. I for one do not practice political correctness because its moronic and ridiculous. It offends my intelligence. The bible is clear; “don’t lie”. And when you willfully lie then you are aligning yourself with the father of lies. God calls it an abomination. Take a moment and think of something that you clearly know as an abomination in the eyes of God. Now, put lying in that same category. You shouldn’t have to lie to encourage someone. you shouldn’t have to lie to minister to someone. You shouldn’t have to lie to lift yourself up. This is often the problem with lying. The lie gets used in place of honesty and truth because the person telling the lie or using deception doesn’t have enough sense to know how to do it any other way. The bible says: Luke 8:17 For all that is in secret will eventually be brought into the open, and everything that is concealed will be brought to light and made known to all. There is NO escaping the truth. Most people lie out of habit. It's a part of who we are as a culture and an accepted way of communicating in today's society. However, ALL things will come to light. When we lie, then often we have to keep that lie going and cover it with another lie and another and another. It becomes an impossible task to keep up with. Eventually, the truth comes out. Once that happens it is 100 times worse than facing the truth in the first place. Therefore, the bible warns us so vehemently against lying. No good can come from it. It would be better to say, “I’d rather not discuss this” or “I’d rather not share my opinion” or “we would both be better off not talking about this”. This isn’t practiced very much in today's world since people's “feelings” are in play. If you won’t tell someone what they want to hear, you’re often regarded as a jerk. However, if you tell them the truth you’re often regarded as a jerk! But if you lie to them it will eventually come to light and then you’re regarded as a liar. God never said that it's an abomination to be considered a jerk because you won’t have a conversation due to trying to protect someone. He said “LYING” is an abomination. Proverbs 17:28 Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: And he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

19

#THEGOSPELTRUTH Matthew 5:37 Let your “yes” be “yes” and your “no” be “no”. For whatever is more than these is from the evil one. So, there you have it, keep your mouth shut. If you lie to make someone “feel” good, it's wrong. If you lie to avoid the truth, it's wrong. If you lie to raise yourself up, it's wrong and you’re of NO VALUE anyway because your worth is based on a lie. Liars will be found out. It's impossible for someone to read your mind when you remain silent. Answer yes and no if you must and stay out of the rest. Attempting to make yourself look intelligent with lots of words makes you look foolish anyway. (a practice for us all) And the bible is clear, The TRUTH will set you free. There’s no hiding from the truth. There’s no darkness in the truth. There’s no backtracking with truth. There’s no danger in tripping yourself up with the truth. It’s the most freedom you can ever imagine. It truly is the most amazing way to be FREE! And, while trying to discover your ability to begin being honest ALL THE TIME, be silent more often. It will keep you out of trouble.

“New Year Same God” Justin Todd Herod New Year Same God, a great combo of music that is slow-down simple with the amazing songwriting and vocal talent of Justin Todd Herod, together it is a song that you will not turn off. We all reflect at the end of the year about all that has happened. Looking bad, some are good while other are not leaving you to feel along with worry going into the new year of change. JTH expresses lyrics the way we feel but don't want to say out loud. “New Year Same God '' brings a message that it may be a new year with old and new worries, but one thing stays the same, that is God. He will always stay the same, loving, caring God that waits for us to lay our worries, sadness, and mistakes at his feet.

"LOVE" - JANA KRAMER Jana Kramer mixes her beautiful country voice with an upbeat sound for this song. “Love '' talks about still believing in the power of love, whether it's as simple as spending time with the ones who mean the most, late night rides, or that sting of your first heartbreak, or the most powerful feeling of love which is walking down an aisle. In a world that preaches hate it can make you feel all alone. It's nice to have a song that reminds us of that good old-fashioned love and that not all are buying into this new world of hate.

“Speak To Me” Andrew Marshall with Delnora This video pulls together that outlaw sound of Andrew Marshall and mixes it with that blues-country sound of Delnora to deliver a message of a time when you are in the middle of a scary road called life, yelling out to God for direction. The “Speak to Me” video walks you through the ups and downs of Andrew and his wife Charlene's personal journey. Using a unique storytelling, you will see the good and the very ugly of this journey and how they both got to that moment where they called out to God for him to speak to them. It’s a walk to bring them to seek God in everything.

Slow Down” Todd Tilman When we are young, we want time to speed up, then as an adult we want to hit pause on time. Todd Tilman's song “Slow Down” is about that feeling. The video, set in a living room will have you going back to a time when you were young. Hearing the lyrics while viewing the family photos on the screen makes you wish for a time to slow down to enjoy every single moment. As we all get older and the weeks turn into months, months into years, and you find yourself thinking please Slow Down.

SAY THANKS IN 2023! Showing how grateful you are for someone’s service can sometimes be best shown when we are serving others. Give Back To The Community An excellent way to honor our military is by doing something positive for the community. It is a way to show that we are actively using the freedom they have fought so hard for in a way that benefits others. Visit a Veterans’ Hospital Veterans are people of all ages, which means there may be a local veterans’ hospital you could visit. If you don’t live near one, you can call around to find out where your closest assisted living facility or nursing home may be. Make a Donation to Their Families Making a donation to the family members who are left to support their loved ones from afar can be a great way to show appreciation for our military members. Their family is equally as important as they are. Support Veteran-Owned Businesses Looking to make a purchase, why not lookup local stores that are owned by veterans? To recognize which stores are owned by veterans, your local chamber of commerce will have information to help you find out. Offer Your Experience and Expertise If you are not in a position to give back financially, you can always give your time. Various groups are available where veterans get together for support or educational purposes. Maybe you have experience in construction and the local VA office is looking for someone to volunteer their time and knowledge to be able to help build houses for wounded warriors. Or perhaps you have technology experience where you can help veterans start a blog where they have a space and platform to share their stories with the world. SAY A PRAYER Everyday, multiple times a day - offer a prayer for all military personnel, veterans, their families and leadership! You don't have to know the names or circumstances nor does your religion or political views make a difference. Just a simple "Lord, Thank you for each of them, give them wisdom, safety, comfort and especially today Lord let them see you, feel your love and cover them with your protection."

FOUR MEN FROM THE PAST TO REMEMBER IN THE FUTURE

FOUR CHAPLINS DAY

By Rebecca Higgins

What are the values from our past that we want to be sure are brought forward to the future for the generations to come. What shows the best of humanity in the worst of circumstances. One story (of many) from World War Two shows four men as an example to all of us of selfless service to others and of love for one another.

the rabbi did not have two pairs of gloves, but had given his only gloves to Mahoney with the intention to remain on the Dorchester. As the men gathered on the deck the chaplains got into an equipment locker and started to handout the lifejackets. When they distributed all of the lifejackets from the locker and still found sailors without lifejackets, the chaplains These four men are commemorated every February 3rd, on simply removed the ones they were wearing and gave them to four young sailors. what is called “Four Chaplains Day”.This day honors the memory of the four chaplains of the Army transport US PVT William B. Bednar said that he could hear “men Dorchester. The Dorchester was torpedoed in the early crying, pleading, and praying. I could also hear the morning hours of February 3rd by a German submarine in chaplain’s preaching courage. Their voices were the only the North Atlantic as it steamed toward Greenland. There thing that kept me going.” John Ladd, who was witness to the event said; “It was the were about 900 soldiers aboard the ship; unfortunately, finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of heaven,”. only 230 men survived. Ladd’s response is understandable. These incredible actions of the four chaplains demonstrates a pure love and The four Army chaplains were: LT George L. Fox (Methodist), LT Alexander D. When giving their life jackets, Rabbi Goode did not call out for a Jewish man; Father Washington did orderly evacuation of the sinking ship, calmed the young not call out for a Catholic; nor did the Reverends Fox and soldiers, gave courage and strength to those facing drowning and hypothermia. THE CHALLENGE – CLEAN UP, CLEAN OUT AND CONTAIN IT

As we stand here in a brand-New Year, it is a good time to reflect and it is a good time to look forward. It is also a good time for God’s people to take inventory of their walk with the Lord. We should take a very close look at where we are in our relationship with Him. We need to examine ourselves and see where we have been, where we are and where the Lord wants us to be. Recently, while cleaning out, a delayed spring cleaning, I uncovered a few things that took me down memory lane. In the clean out process, there were things kept, things released, and things remembered. In my reference time for writing in this issue, I found myself in Colossians 3:1-4 reading the challenge to God’s people to do a personal clean out. Looking at my life in the light of these verses, the suggestion is to retain some things of our life, to release some things and to remember some things. The moment was so powerful for me that I wanted to share with all of you the challenges contained in this formidable scriptures. God has a plan for your life; He wants certain things for your life; and He has the right to demand these things in your life. Colossians 3: 1-2 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

SOME THINGS MUST BE CLEANED UP Cleaning up I found many things that were of importance, for which could not be thrown away but kept them to use again if desired. In a similar way, Paul in Colossians is telling us that there are a couple of spiritual possessions that we should keep. “Risen with Christ,” is Paul declaring spiritual reality, not a maybe if you are lucky, it is a statement of “Since you are risen.” When Jesus died on the cross, we all died that day as well spiritually to the penalty and power of sin. Because we have died to that, we do not have to worry about being punished for our sins, the price was paid. Paul reminds us that we have also been raised up with Jesus. When He died, we died. When He rose from the dead, we rose from the dead as well! Since we have been raised to a new life in Jesus, we are told to “seek those things which are above”. We are told here to focus our thoughts on heavenly things not earthly things. We are to set our minds on the things of God and on the things that bring glory to Him. We are challenged to live out our lives with genuine spiritual values, and not the values of a fallen world. As we give our attention to these spiritual, heavenly things, we are enabled to live a God-honoring life in this world. Every decision, every activity, every plan, and purpose are to be considered in the light of eternity. As we take on this New Year, may the Lord help us to CLEAN UP opening the room for our truth of who we are and what we have in Jesus!

36

SOME THINGS MUST BE CLEANED OUT In that same clean up, I came across several things that needed to go! There was no room for them, some just simple trash leading me to wonder why I had not previously thrown that crap out. Therefore, some items were given away and others traveled to the dump. While I contained some things in this clean up, others things had to be cleaned out! In our spiritual lives, the same thing is true. Some things must be let go! There are some things that try to attach themselves to our lives that are just plain trash. Those things need to be kicked to the curb! Other things simply don’t have a place in our lives and those things need to be let go. Paul tells us in verse 2 that we are to focus our thoughts on Heavenly things. While we do that, we are to avoid getting caught up in all the things in this world that would swamp our minds and hinder our walk. If we allowed the mind to focus on this world, it would have no time to give itself to the things of God. Paul further describes distractions which come in all shapes and sizes, they cripple us. If any of this is in your life, clean it out! One step we can take is to starve the flesh, refuse to feed the anger, and deny the distraction. Additionally, we can overcome by crowding it out of our life, you know the saying twos company but threes a crowd. Same thing, put those positive things in your world so that the evil has no room, just make it the odd man out! As we walk within this New Year, may the Lord help us to CLEAN OUT the distractions that cripple, leading us on down the path for which HE directs!

SOME THINGS MUST BE CONTAINED Opening a tote, I discovered that many of my grandmother’s items were held within, it was a walk down memory lane for me. There was a hint of sadness but mostly a smile remembering the association of these items to her and the blessing of her life. Colossians 3: 3-4 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Paul reminds us there has been a death, the one of which we died to our sin. The greatest of all victories can be found when we fully embrace that we are crucified with Christ. When we were saved, a new life was given to us with eternal security. Paul closes this part reminding us that this world is not the best, but the reward is Glorious! Right now, everyone of us battles the world, the flesh, and the devil. Each of these enemies does everything they can to hinder us and to cause us to fail. It is by keeping our eyes on that Glory that we will win the worldly battles, experience victory on this side while working toward that moment we eternally bask in the presence of our Savior!

ALL THINGS ARE VICTORIES In our battles and victories within this New Year, may the Lord help us to CONTAIN the promises, the dedication to keeping our eyes toward the glory! · Are there some things in your life that need to be Cleaned Up? Does your focus need to be adjusted? · Are there some things in your life that need to be Cleaned Out? Do you need to get rid of some things that hinder or distract you. · Are there some things in your life that need to be Contained? Do you need to take a trip down memory lane and remind yourself of the promises. Whatever the needs may be today, you should listen to the voice of the Lord and do what He is telling you to do. Let’s seek to make 2023 the best year of our lives for the glory of God!

THE RETRO FUTURE OF MUSIC

Deuteronomy 32:7 Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.

When we speak about music, it goes back before the beginning. As revealed in Job 38:7, God created Angels before He created Earth as they bore witnessed to creation shouting for joy in song. “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy.” – They were singing! Can’t get more at the beginning that that!!! Today, with social media we get to see so many uses of music, like the romantic song of the groom to his bride on their wedding day. We all smile, maybe shed a tear of joy and say, “how sweet.” Well, it wasn’t a wedding planner, magazine or social media that came up with that sweet idea. It is recorded in Genesis 2:23 that Adam sang in response to the creation of Eve…now that is sweet! Considered the creator of instruments, Jubal is mentioned in Genesis 4:21, "And his brother's name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ." However, this moment is many generations post creation and it seems unlikely that God would give music, then pause it until the birth of Jubal. Unlikely is not the word, it is simply not correct as we know that Psalm 92 it is not only the first hymn but the one for Adam and Eve, the first man and woman. “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O Most High: To shew forth thy loving kindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night, Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound. DID YOU KNOW that at least 185 songs exist with the Bible? It is true, while most of them can be found in the book of Psalms, it is a worthy note that it is also the longest book of the bible and is nothing but songs. It is not the only songbook, there are two others… Song of Soloman and Lamentations. The first song in the bible is found in Exodus 15 as the children of Israel cross the parted Red Sea, The Song of Moses is also the last song of the bible. Revelation 15 expresses that John sees those that have overcome the beast singing The Song of Moses with slightly different lyrics. Thinking of music as a tree, the roots being God, the trunk being the music and the vast branches as genres. Then add that most tree branches have branches as well, so your genres have genres. Aligning with the action of Jesus at the Last Supper, Christian music combines chords, lyrics with a message for learning, encouragement, and worship. The Bible tells us that Jesus sang with his disciples on the night before his crucifixion, singing the Hallel. The Hallel is a section of the Old Testament found in Psalm 113-118. The disciples did not know what was to come, This singing of the Hallel would give understanding as the prophecy revealed itself in the days ahead giving the lesson, the encouragement and the message of salvation through Jesus.

38

Overall, the music of the Bible is utilized in worship within our churches and religious events. Music remains the best way to move a person or people, it is an untouchable resource to affect the heart. For that reason, many artists and ministers saw the need to create music with a message just like that last supper singing The founder of The Salvation Army, William Booth, had a lively band play secular music set with Christian lyrics to attract more people to the church. He called it “salvation music,” with his most notable creation being “Onward Christian Soldiers.” The Reverend Thomas Dorsey combined secular blues genre to sacred Christian lyrics creating the Gospel sound. Dorsey wrote over 400 compositions, but his most well-known song is “Take My Hand, Precious Lord.” We rock on forward to the “Father of Christian Rock,” Larry Norman, who married Christian words to secular rock n roll. Some of his most beloved songs include “Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music,” and, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.” Norman was a pioneer of the 1970s “Jesus Movement” where Christian songs became more accessible to a general audience and began developing as an industry. The “Jesus Movement” led to “Jesus music” or what is now known as Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) which encompasses Christian pop, Christian rap, Christian metal, and much more. Though there were Christian albums in the 1960s that contained contemporary-sounding songs, there were two albums recorded in 1969 that are considered the first complete albums of "Jesus rock": Upon This Rock (1969) by Larry Norman and Mylon – We Believe by Mylon LeFevre, which was LeFevre's attempt at blending gospel music with southern rock. The small Jesus music culture expanded into a multimillion-dollar industry by the 1980s with crossover success to mainstream radio by Benny Hester, Amy Grant, DC Talk, Stryper, Michael W. Smith and Jars of Clay. Of these “crossover” Christian music genres enjoyed today, the one that precedes them on a timetable and seems to be without much effort to combine the music/message is Christian Country Music. Referencing the Power Source Magazine September issue, A.P Carter reworked the hymn "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" by Ada R. Habershon and Charles H. Gabriel in the 1927 Bristol Recording Sessions – considered the birthplace of country music. Check out the Power Source September 2022 to learn the origin of Christian Country Music. It is most interesting that God gave us music at creation and the first time it is mainstream recorded is that of a hymnal conversion. Country music is branded as the music of the people, particular to the South, which is widely religious. Country artists market themselves as unchanged by fame, just country folks. Therefore, their faith is presented in their music regardless of any label or genre. So the “crossover” just organically happens in this large music genre. Then and most especially comes the dedicated Christian Country Music artists who purpose daily to put music to the message that is both powerful in faith and excellent in music. The song that has you tapping your feet, then touching your heart. It is Christian music with a vast set of genres that continues to work the gift of music given at creation to man. It is by learning where we came from, that we can best get where we are created to go!

Retro is the Gift – Future is the Destiny!

Bo Melton was drafted in the seventh round of this year’s NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. He failed to make their roster and spent the first 16 weeks of the regular season on their practice squad. The Packers signed him to their 53-man roster in the last week of 2022 to bring this talented preacher’s kid, church drum playing, NFL wide receiver to Green Bay for 2023. Melton grew up in Mays Landing, New Jersey and attended Cedar Creek High School. As a senior, Melton caught 51 receptions for 766 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 451 yards and seven touchdowns. His college choice was Rutgers, where he caught 164 passes and earned all-Big Ten honors as a team captain during his senior season. After training with Christian Watson, Melton ran his 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds at the Scouting Combine making him the eighth-fastest player at the event. Before football came Faith and a set of drums. "Faith has always been a part of my life as my father is a preacher. I was raised up in a church where I played the drums, and my life was given to Christ at a young age. I began to have faith in the lord in which he guided my life's journey." Melton has been playing the drums since the age of two, without any formal training - elevating to playing for the church every Sunday. Even as a standout player for the Scarlet Knights, Melton returned to the church as often as possible. Bo Melton’s father, Gary, played football at Rutgers and his mother, Vicky, played on the women's basketball team. His younger brother, Max, is currently a defensive back at Rutgers.

THE READS “It’s a peculiar thing, this having lived long enough to take a good look back. We go from knowing each other better than we know ourselves to barely sure if we know each other at all, to precisely sure that we don’t. All my knotted-up life I’ve longed for the sanity and simplicity of knowing who’s good and who’s bad. I’ve wanted to know this about myself as much as anyone. This was not theological. It was strictly relational. God could do what he wanted with eternity. I was just trying to make it here in the meantime. As benevolent as he has been in a myriad of ways, God has remained aloof on this uncomplicated request.” ―Beth Moore All My Knotted-Up Life is a beautifully crafted portrait of resilience and survival, a poignant reminder of God’s enduring faithfulness, and proof positive that if we ever truly took the time to hear people’s full stories . . . we’d all walk around slackjawed.
