HELD ANNUALLY 501 c 3 FOUNDATION HELD BIENNIALLY

The World Police & Fire Games are known today as the second largest, international sporting event, offering firefighters, law enforcement, customs, and correction officers from around the world an opportunity to showcase their athletic excellence. Originally held in 1985, the games now boast over 65 sporting events and 70 countries represented by more than 10,000 competitors. The World Police & Fire Games are governed by the World Police and Fire Games Federation, a committee of the California Police Athletic Federation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 1970.

Considering the average to be one & one-half persons accompanying each competitor, we calculate that a total of 15,000 – 30,000 visitors attribute to the substantial economic impact in the host cities and their surrounding vicinities during the 10-day event. The Games have proven to bring together entire communities, local residents have taken to “adopting” teams and the camaraderie includes community organizations, business leaders & educators all joining forces to support first responders and their countrymen.

OVERVIEW OF THE US POLICE & FIRE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The first California Police Olympics were held in San Diego, California in 1967, and were founded by San Diego Police Lieutenant Veon “Duke” Nyhus who recognized the need to promote physical fitness and camaraderie among members of the law enforcement community. Duke formulated the idea of the Police Olympics and created the competition with an eye towards promoting physical fitness and sport as a means for officers to improve their overall fitness, reduce stress, and increase their professional abilities.

Scheduled for June 2 – 9, 2018, the United States Police & Fire Championships is an Olympic-style competition with athletes representing law enforcement, firefighters, and officers from corrections, probation, border protection, immigration, and customs from across the country. Athletes compete in 50 different sports in 35 venues throughout the county.
