Arctic Storm Rising by Dale Brown
Dale Brown is a master of the military adventure, and he kicks off his new series spectacularly with Arctic Storm Rising. Captain Nick Flynn is an Air Force intelligence officer who has been exiled to a remote radar station in the remote Alaskan wilderness after being blamed for a CIA covert mission that spectacularly went up in flames (literally). The intent of this new assignment is to destroy his military career. To add to Nick’s frustration, he is given command of a group of misfits and screwups who remind him of The Dirty Dozen. Colonel Alexei Petrov is Russia’s premier military test pilot – and the disgruntled son of a Hero of the Motherland. Petrov proposes a single rigorous and complex exercise designed to assess the full range of its new strategic bomber’s strike capabilities. He argues this will cut through months of bureaucratic red tape, allowing Russia to field a force of combatready stealth bombers much more quickly. To
enhance the authenticity of the exercise, Petrov suggests the bomber carry its full wartime payload of missiles and fuel. The Russian president approves Petrov’s recommendation. Midway through the exercise, Petrov slips away into the Alaskan wilderness. He then offers the prototype to both America and Russia. Russia is frantic to recover the stealth bomber and determines the prototype is most likely in North America. Russian aircraft begin penetrating Canadian and American air space to search for the prototype, despite the horrific winter storms covering the area. The Pentagon also wants to find the prototype first. They realize Flynn’s team is the only airbornequalified force available that can reach the site in the next 24 hours. I’ve only touched on the intrigue … You need to read this book!
