“One of the hallmarks of success of this group is that once kids join, they tend to stay for a long time. They do one show, and that turns into a whole season of shows. I have kids in shows now that started with me six or seven years ago – they maybe have missed one show – but they have been in every single show – over 20 shows since we started back with Peter Pan,” says Eddie.

Many children who shine on the stage also take vocal or dance lessons, and as the children have grown up in the program, the level of difficulty for the productions has grown as well. One common misconception is that Evan’s Children’s Academy is a separate entity from the Poncan Theatre. Eddie Dixon says they are one and the same. “We are the same entity. There isn’t one and the other, we all are the Poncan Theatre. We are inextricably joined. Having the space, being able to perform and practice there – if we had to rent a space, it would not be financially viable to have a Children’s Theatre,” says Eddie.

The big summer production for the Evan’s Children’s Academy will be Shrek the Musical. The parts have been cast and tickets are on sale soon and can be purchased online at www.poncantheatre.org.

Show dates for Shrek the Musical will be July 9-11 and 16-18.

A Message from the Poncan Theatre Board

The Poncan Theatre needs your help.

Home to many memories and events over the last 100 years, The Poncan Theatre has also had its share of trials. After shuttering in 1985 due to disrepair, it was reborn in 1994 because of a community that values its history while looking to its future. Many organizations have benefited from the rejuvenation of the theatre. The Ponca City community brought it back to life, and it has not since been forgotten. The Poncan Theatre Board has been hard at work ever since stewarding our beloved theatre. Annually, the theatre is used for the Ponca City Concert series, various dance recitals, community and venue rentals, traveling entertainment and a variety of movies. But, of the many things the Poncan Theatre Board of Directors has done to ensure the success of our theatre, debatably none has had as much community impact as the Evans Children’s Academy of Performing Arts.
