Between Denise Scott Brown and Robert Venturi's Deadpan shots of the facade rows along the Las Vegas Stripe and the composed realism of Ryan McGinley, the vastness of a continent is unfolded along its main traffic arteries.

While Scott Brown and Venturi, as leading professors of the 1968 Las Vegas excursion, together with their students, documented the city through a comera fixed on the engine hood, Nikolas Ettel turns, fifty years later and 12,000 km far away, a 360° camera upside down and walks through the narrow back alleys of Hong Kong. In From Movies to Places - From Side streets to Spaces Nik takes you to the "Alleys in Wonderland" (ADATO 1_18).

The catastrophes of our time must be called by their names and we should all work together on finding the right words, but first thoughts and deeds: With "Die Städte am Meer" we dedicate the first chapter of this ADATO+Voyage to the forced journey and to the people: to refugees fleeing from war and poverty as to the migrants leaving their homes in the hope for a better future. This comment was first published in ADATO 1_17 and discusses the sea as separating element, as a border between the worlds, as a symbol for new beginnings and in its essence as a cemetery of the nameless off the shores of Europe.

In tiefer Trauer, Dankbarkeit und Freundschaft gedenken wir dem einzigartigen Gustav Ironimus Peichl.

„Valentiny, grüß mir Deine Damen“. Mit seinen Grüßen an meine Frau Edith und unsere Tochter Anna verabschiedete sich mein Freund Gustav Peichl nach jedem Treffen und nach jedem Telefonat von mir.

Das Jahr 2019 wird nun in Trauer enden, denn nach Friederich Achleitner und Wilhelm Holzbauer sind jetzt auch seine Worte verstummt.

Kennengelernt habe ich Gustav Peichl Anfang der 70er Jahre als Professor an der Akademie am Schillerplatz in Wien. Zu jener Zeit wetteiferten die Hollein- und die Holzbauer-Schüler von der Angewandten gegen die Rainer- und Peichl-Schüler der Bildenden um die Vorherrschaft zweier der bedeutendsten Architekturschulen.

Schätzen gelernt habe ich Gustav Peichl als Assistent von Wilhelm Holzbauer in den Jahren 1980-81, als sie gemeinsam die Meisterklasse für Architektur an der Internationalen Sommerakademie in Salzburg leiteten.

Damals sah ich einen Besessenen, einen Getriebenen und Inszenierenden, der sich in alles Erdenkliche einmischte um mit zu gestalten.

Architektur war sein Lebensinhalt, aber für ihn, den Energiegeladenen, den ewig Suchenden nach den großen Zusammenhängen der Welt, war dieses Feld wohl viel zu klein.

Peichl erkannte sehr früh, dass die politische Karikatur für ihn nicht nur als Ausgleich oder Ventil zu seiner Arbeit als Architekt und Lehrer diente, sondern dass sie ihm, im gleichen Ausmaß wie die Architektur, ein großes Gestaltungsfeld bot.

Gustav Peichl gestaltete nicht nur als internationaler Architekt großartige Bauten, sondern übte unter dem Pseudonym Ironimus mit tausenden von Karikaturen im ORF, der Presse und der Süddeutschen Zeitung über Jahrzehnte großen Einfluss auf Kultur und Politik aus.

Peichl, der Schüler von Clemens Holzmeister, der Architekt, der Professor und Leiter der Meisterklasse für Architektur und Rektor der Akademie für Bildende Kunst in Wien, war ein Gigant, der sowohl als Baumeister als auch als Karikaturist blitzgescheit jede Aufgabe und jede Situation in Bruchteilen von Sekunden analysieren konnte um seine Gedanken anschließend präzise und nachhaltig zu Papier zu bringen.

Ironisch, zeichenhaft und unverkennbar prägte er wie kein anderer seiner Generation die österreichische Baukultur.

Peichl hat für den Menschen gebaut und so war es sehr naheliegend, dass er sich als Kulturträger verstand. Obwohl er seine Eitelkeit pflegte und sich sehr gerne als Pausenclown bezeichnete, forderte er mit Ausdauer und Vehemenz Respekt für die Architektur und Respekt für den Architekten.

Die Anerkennung für die großen und wichtigen Bauten, die er schuf, wie die Erweiterung des Frankfurter Städel-Museums, die Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn, die Münchner Kammerspiele und gemeinsam mit Boris Podrecca den Millennium Tower in Wien, hat Gustav Peichl ohne Zweifel verdient und trotzdem liebte er, der Wiener Tradition eng verbunden, den kleinen Maßstab und die scheinbar nebensächlichen Details.

Zu seinem 60. Geburtstag teilte Gustav Peichl mir mit dass, in Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass sich ab jetzt die Anzahl der Menschen vergrößere, denen er das Götz-Zitat entgegenwerfen könne, nun sein besserer Lebensabschnitt beginnen würde.

Obwohl ich inzwischen wieder in Luxemburg arbeitete derweil leitete Hubert Hermann unser Wiener Büro - vertiefte sich meine Beziehung zu Wien. Grund war mein immer inniger wachsender Austausch mit Wilhelm Holzbauer, Rob Krier und Gustav Peichl. So entschied Elfi Peichl ganz resolut, Anfang der Jahrtausendwende, dass wir nun Freunde sind. Die intellektuelle Nähe hatte sich, gemeinsam mit Mari und Wilhelm Holzbauer, zu einer warmherzigen Freundschaft entwickelt, zuerst im engen Wiener-Kreis, dann, bedingt durch den Umbau des Kleinen Festspielhauses, in einem größeren Kreis in Salzburg.

Es war jene Zeit von Peichls kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit der zeitgenössischen Architektur. Viel konsequenter und lauter als früher forderte er Sinnlichkeit und Individualität. Gustav Peichls Geist und Haltung veranschaulichen sich am besten anlässlich seines 90. Geburtstages im Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Wien.

Kämpferisch und ironisch geißelte er die seelenlosen und einfallslosen Städteplanungen und forderte, wie ewig jung: „Etwas mehr Kreativität und vor allem viel mehr Erotik in der Architektur, bitteschön“.

Die Städte am Meer Von Gdańsk nach Athen erschien ursprünglich in ADATO 1_17 Architektur+Wasser.

Vor drei Jahren haben die Medien täglich fassungslos, anklagend und fordernd über die Fluchtrouten nach Europa und in den Nordwesten berichtet. Heute sind die Flucht und das jahrelange Verharren der Asylsuchenden unter menschenunwürdigen Bedingungen und das Sterben im Mittelmeerraum zur Alltäglichkeit geworden, über die nur noch selten gesprochen wird.

Das Phänomen der Wüstenoase Las Vegas wurde erst durch die Erschließung des Landes und seiner scheinbar endlosen Weiten ermöglicht. Während die Neue Welt von der Ostküste aus kolonialisiert wurde, wagten Pioniere wie Meriwether Lewis oder William Clark in den Jahren 1803–1806 erste Expeditionen an die Westküste. Der Goldrausch von 1849 führte schließlich zur Massenwanderung von Siedlern und Glücksrittern in den Wilden Westen. Mit der Vollendung der ersten transkontinentalen Eisenbahnlinie zwischen Atlantik und Pazifik, 1869, stand der vollständigen Eroberung des Kontinents und der absoluten Unterjochung der indigenen Bevölkerung nichts mehr im Wege. Die Route 66 war eine ursprünglich 3944 Kilometer lange Straße von Chicago im Bundesstadt Illinois nach Santa Monica/LA in Kalifornien und entwickelte sich bis in die 1920er Jahre zur ersten durchgehend befestigten Straßenverbindungen von Ost nach West.

Hier lernte sie Venturi kennen. Scott Brown zog es 1965 weiter an die Westküste, an die University of California, wo sie unterrichtete und darüber hinaus den auto-orientierten Städtebau des Westens studieren wollte.

Neben der Wüstenstadt wurden auch Los Angeles, das Atelier des Künstlers Ed Ruscha und Disneyland besucht. Im Zuge der Exkursion entstanden insgesamt fünftausend Farbdias und dreitausend Meter Film.

Die Publikation Learning from Las Vegas erschien 1972 in der MIT Press und emanzipierte sich im Laufe der Jahre zu einem der meistzitiertesten Werke der Architekturtheorie des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Darüber hinaus gilt es rückblickend als intellektuelle Vorarbeit zur tatsächlich gebauten Architektur der amerikanischen Postmoderne.

Die städtebauliche Studie diskutierte Form und Ästhetik der zeitgenössischen Stadt. Diese verlangte, geprägt von den Phänomenen der Dezentralisierung und Suburbanisierung, nach einem neuen Bild. In diesem Kontext interessierte sich die Studie vor allem für die Themen der räumlichen Organisation, der zeichenhaften Kommunikation und des Austauschverhältnis zwischen der Ästhetik der Populär- und der architektonischen Hochkultur.

Las Vegas Revisited Las Vegas Studio - Bilder aus dem Archiv von Robert Venturi und Denise Scott Brown basiert auf einer Dissertation, die 2007 an der ETH Zürich angenommen wurde. Martino Stierlis Las Vegas im Rückspiegel - Die Stadt in Theorie, Fotografie und Film wurde 2011 im gta Verlag publiziert.

Stierli betrachtet den Klassiker im Kontext zeitgenössischer Kunst. Dabei legt er einen Schwerpunkt auf die Themenfelder Fotografie, Malerei und Druckgrafik der 1960er und 70er, aber auch auf architekturtheoretische Pionierwerke wie Kevin Lynchs The Image of the City von 1960.

Stierli beschreibt Las Vegas in seiner Publikation als nationales Unterhaltungs- und Glücksspielmekka, das sich ab den 30er Jahren zum bevorzugten Ort der kollektiven Imagination Amerikas entwickelte. Es bestünde als karnevalesker Gegenpart zur konservativen WASP Kultur. Kulturkritiker verglichen, Stierli zufolge, die Wüstenstadt mit den Freizeitparks Walt Disneys und bezeichneten es als Sammelbecken eskapistischer Träume - Orte wo der Durchschnittsamerikaner seinem Alltag entfliehen will und dabei erst recht zwischen die Räder der kapitalistischen Maschinerie gerät.

Das Medium der Photographie Stierli und sein Team haben es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht die im Zuge von Learning from Las Vegas entstandenen Photographien einer "Relecture" zu unterziehen. Die Fotografie war für die Autoren primär Mittel zum Zweck. Unser Projekt kehrt sozusagen zur Thesenbildung zurück und nimmt direkt Bezug auf das fotographische Material, das durch eine bezaubernde, nachlässige Schönheit beeindruckt. Das Team hätte die Bilder aus dem ursprünglichen argumentativen Zusammenhang gelöst und stellte sie als fotographische Sensation vor, so Stierli zu Beginn von Ins Bild gerückt.

Stierli beschreibt weiter die ausgesprochene Konsequenz mit der das Exkursionsteam um Scott Brown, Venturi und Steven Izenour Kamera und Film als Mittel zur umfassenden Bestandsaufnahme einer Stadt im Rahmen einer architekturtheoretischen Studie sowie zur Forschung als Grundlage für den eigenen Entwurf einsetzten. So beschreibt er den Zugang des Exkursionsteams wie folgt: Das Modul ging davon aus, dass traditionelle Repräsentationstechniken aufgrund ihrer statischen Natur das Verständnis für die Form der zeitgenössischen Stadt behinderten und deshalb nach alternativen Darstellungsmodi zu suchen sei. Das eingefrorenen und das bewegte Bilde, aufgenommen durch das Medium der Kamera, ließen eine subjektive Vielfalt in den Arbeiten entstehen.

Ed Ruschas fotographische Arbeiten zeichnen sich durch einen dezidiert unterkühlten, emotionslosen und dokumentarischen Zugriff aus. Er scheint eher journalistisch, also neutral zu dokumentieren anstatt Bilder zu komponieren. Twentysix Gasoline Stations (1963) wurden auf der Route 66 zwischen Los Angeles und seiner Heimatstadt Oklahoma City porträtiert. Es wird die alltägliche Tristesse und Poesie, das Rudimentäre der Tankstellen, Hotels, 02 und Parkplätze dokumentiert. Dabei versucht Ruscha durch seine deadpan Bilder einen nicht-Stil zu entwickeln, so Stierli, und das künstlerische Subjekt und den schöpferischen Akt auszulöschen.

Stierli fährt fort, diese tendenzielle Abwehr des handwerklichen Aktes gegenüber theoretischer Konzeption bildeten eine Parallele zwischen Ruschas Fotografien und der im Zuge der von Scott Brown und Venturis Las Vegas Exkursion entstandenen Arbeiten.

Die Ed Ruscha Elevantion, eine Reihung an Stills aus dem 21-minütigen Film Las Vegas Deadpan ist so explizit dem Künstler gewidmet. Zu sehen sind die gereihten Fassaden entlang des Strips, dokumentiert durch eine auf der Kühlerhaube des fahrenden Autos montierte Kamera. Das Bild soll sich allen Emotionen und jeder Intention durch einen Schöpfer entziehen. Es entsteht eine Collage der Bebauung des Strips von Las Vegas auf beiden Seiten der Straße, zwischen Tropicana Avenue und dem Hotel Sahara. Wie Ruscha ersetzen sie die selektive Wahrnehmung des Auges durch den mechanischen Blick der Kamera.

Jedoch kann man weder Ruscha noch der Learning from Las Vegas Exkursion durchgehen lassen, einen tatsächlichen Anspruch auf steril dokumentarische Arbeit zu hegen. So erkennt man in beiden Fällen einen durchaus ästhetisch motivierten Blick und Bildkomposition, die sich bei den Studentenarbeiten in der Collage der Videoausschnitte und bei Ruscha spätestens in der Postproduktion manifestieren. So nimmt beispielsweise der farbige Siebdruck Standard Station von 1966, das Thema der Photographien von 1963 wieder auf und montiert sie zu einer idealisierten, gra-

Als Schlüsselevent ist die Ausstellung New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape, kuratiert von William Jenkins im International Museum of Photography aus dem Jahr 1975 zu nennen.

Während Robert Adams in seinen Arbeiten den Siedlergedanken und die zersiedelte Landschaft als Schwarz-Weiss gehaltene Geisterstädte komponiert, lässt Stephen Shore Farbe und gesichtslose, den uns mit den Rücken zugewandte Figuren, noch mehr Autos, Motels und Strassen ins Bild. Es sind karge Szenen der Trostlosigkeit, die in ihrer Austauschbarkeit dem amerikanischen Nomaden ein Zuhause auf Zeit schaffen und nicht allein in ihren cineastischen Artikulationen Nährboden für etlichen Wahnsinn und tief kaputte menschliche Psychen sind.

It is exciting to see how the initial text Alleys in Wonderland has transformed in time and media. It all started with ADATO’s issue 2_18 ‘Architecture + Projection’, and the cinematic representation of Hong Kong’s back alley spaces. This, then, thrived to a multimedia exhibition at PMQ, a historic venue for arts and design at the heart of Central Hong Kong in September 2019.

A 360-degree camera, 20 outstanding back alleys, and a handful of digital tools; all to capture an overview of street level activities; from small, usually family owned, businesses to company-owned restaurant branches.

By using the latest VR technology, in particular Oculus Go Goggles, the exhibition creates an immersive experience for our audience. Due to the special filming technique, this VR set up offers the possibility to choose a preferred view to fully embrace the filmed surrounding. While wearing a VR goggle, the participant can choose by normal physical head movements the intended direction of a preferred view. Some participants have chosen to look straight and follow the given path provided by the film, others have looked around to get a glimpse into passing shops, hence all were amazed by the surreal feeling of being visually immersed either in Hong Kong or Macau.

Madame Lim 英記麵家

This example looks at the alley behind Ying Kee Noodles 英記麵 家, a small restaurant on High Street in the district of Sai Ying Pun where I usually go for lunch. Here, Madame Lim and her husband are serving six days a week their signature soup dishes. Framed in the front window, the cook performs his daily work, juggling different kinds of egg noodles while managing a steaming pot full of boiling intestines from who knows what type of animals.

However, barely noticeable from High Street itself, the little restaurant regularly expands their business space to the back of the housing block. Here, in a small back alley, and especially during rush hours at lunchtime, this restaurant takes over half of the back alley space by countless tables and plastic stools. This guarantees their customers a shorter waiting time, and a potentially comfortable and peaceful sitting spot along Ying Wa Terrace 英 華臺, the official name of the alley. Despite its grandiose name, Ying Wa Terrace is actually not a usual terrace; it’s one of the nearly 700 back alley’s that unintentionally represents the commonly overlooked qualities of Hong Kong’s street life. In the early morning, this alley is a kitchen, wet and steamy while preparing the dishes of the day, during lunch it fills with hungry customers chatting underneath a small centred banyan tree, transforming the space into a makeshift plaza, for lack of a better word. In the afternoon, it is a storage, but at night, it becomes a sink again, wet and steamy, while someone cleans oversized metal pots and wooden cutting blocks.

Neighbours, locals, and tourists are brought together, sandwiched between a typical twenty plus storey tall housing block to the one side and a five-meter stonewall on the other.

The ACs form a neat row above the restaurant canopies. With only small spatial changes, the alley offers the customers a more quiet, and enjoyable place to eat their soups, and besides the typical storage facilities, this alley therefore shows perfectly the fusion of everyday life activities and functional flexibility.

Mr. Lau Oi Kwan Barber & Sons This traditional Cantonese barbershop at Spring Garden Lane in Wan Chai is another vital example of back alley businesses. A small shop, with its three old red leather chairs, which offers insights into Hong Kong’s vintage street life. Opened in 1962, Mark Lau owns his fathers’ barbershop today; ‘who has starting with a stool on the street that became an alleyway shop between two tenement buildings on Spring Garden Lane. He quietly served the neighbourhood. The shop has groomed, shaved, clipped and faded generations of Wan Chai residents seeing some from infancy through to their twilight years.’ Mark continues his fathers’ tradition while opened an additional shop nearby within Green House on Mallory Street, a preserved historical building. In his own words, he treasures ‘valuable traditions of English barber with infusion of Cantonese culture. With the most treasured products, the highest demand on hygiene, the most skilful hand, they are committed to an ultimate barbering experience.’

Chéngyu 成语

The city of Macau is only a one-hour ferry ride away from Hong Kong, yet it gives our 'lane' definition search a wider perspective.

In comparison to Hong Kong’s confined, and almost banal way of naming all mapped back alleys; ‘lanes’, Macau has a refreshing different approach in naming even the smallest crack between two blocks. Streets, so narrow that someone cannot even spread his arms have an official name and Portuguese touched street sign. Only the historical city centre of Macau alone has over 150 officially named lanes; called Beco’s 里 (lǐ). Besides Beco’s, the most similar type to Hong Kong’s alleyways, there are two other types called Travessa’s, the most commonly found one (almost 300) and Calçada’s (5) with the same Chinese translation 巷 (xiàng). By walking through one in particular, Travessa Da Dorna 酒潭巷, best described as a pedestrian walkway with small shops.

Here, tiny shops are provisionally erected on each side of the alley, while metal sliding doors offering a handful of pedestrians a place to sit inside. A few loosely connected canopies covering the scenery in which mostly elderly people gather to loudly and joyfully play Mah-jong. Yet it is the existence of these small, white tiles pieced together with dark grey cement grout that changes this covered street scene into a tiled living room. Walking through the stalls, one feels like wandering along a corridor into a complex arranged flat, with various sized rooms. The walls of these hand-made stalls rooms are fully covered with what a foreign eye would call Chinese kitsch. But, if we look more closely, and only afterwards, I have learned about chéngyu 成语, a form of literal expression by four Chinese characters. Briefly, these idioms mean more than the sum of the four characters, as they are often linked to myths or stories, and sometimes encourage Mah-jong players to continue playing; Qì ér bù shě 鍥而不捨 (Perseverance).

Conclusively, 155 Pátio’s 圍 (wéi) are forming the last type of alleyways in Macau. In comparison to the others, this is the most privately used lane type. Typically, patios are occupied by several families, living in the blocks surrounding the courtyard, and depending on the size of them, gathering either at the corners or at the centre of the Pátio.

So just as chéngyu, back alley's various types, translations, regulations and usage mean more than the sum of its parts.

Der erste große Gletscher Islands, der Okjökull ist tot. Mit dem Eis verlor Okjökull auch seinen Namen.

Er heißt jetzt nur noch Ok, denn Jökull bedeutet auf Isländisch "Gletscher". Im Sommer 2019 wurde eine Gedenktafel angebracht. Darauf steht ein „Brief an die Zukunft“, eine Botschaft an künftige Generationen: "Ok ist der erste bekannte Gletscher auf Island, der seinen Status als Gletscher verloren hat. In den kommenden 200 Jahren dürften ihm alle unsere Gletscher folgen. Diese Gedenkstätte soll bezeugen, dass wir wissen, was geschieht und was zu tun ist. Nur ihr werdet wissen, ob wir es getan haben."

Eine Polarumkehr ist im Gange, Island verliert 12 Millionen Tonnen Eis im Jahr. Ist Island im Jahr 2200 vielleicht vollständig ohne Eis? Und wird der Norden zum Süden? Seit vielen Jahren zieht es die Berliner Künstlerin Annette Goessel immer wieder nach Island. Dort nahm die Werkgruppe Nach Norden, nach Norden! ihren Anfang.

Ist es ein Paradox des stadtflüchtigen Menschen, das Unterworfensein unter der Naturgewalt zu genießen?

Die Natur beherrscht in Island alles – und verändert sich durch die Gewalt des menschengemachten Klimawandels. „Schöne“ Widersprüche, aus denen die Idee entstand, etwas Kleines, Delikates in den großen Leerstellen der Landschaft herzustellen.

Die Ausstellung zeigt, begleitet von einer Sound- installation, großformatige Gemälde und kleine Papierarbeiten aus den isländischen Lavafeldern. Die Künstlerin begreift sie als eine Art Archiv „lyrischer Aufregungen“, die Anstoß zum Denken und Handeln sein sollen.

Ein Tondo ist nach dem Ok benannt, dem verschwundenen isländischen Gletscher. Ein kreisrundes Bild, das Annette Gössel immer wieder übermalte. Unter der Oberfläche rumort es. Landschaft und Malerei sind in Bewegung.

Annette Gössel wurde in Lübeck, in Norddeutschland geboren. Von 1987 bis 1988 studierte sie an der Kunstakademie Stuttgart um 1988 nach Wien an die Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst zu gehen. In der Meisterklasse der Professoren Oberhuber und Caramelle sollte sie 1992 ihr Diplom machen. Annette verließ Wien und lebt und arbeitet seither in Berlin. Immer wieder zog es Annette ins Ausland und so zeigt sie sich verantwortlich für eine Vielzahl an Einzelausstellungen in Deutschland, Österreich, Spanien und nun mit Nach Norden, nach Norden! … oder doch in den Süden?! zum ersten Mal in Luxemburg.

Eine Künstler Residencie in Kooperation mit der Galeria Arabal führte Annette 2001— 2003 nach Altea in Spanien. 2016 sollte die von Helgi Eirikkson initierte Residencie Annette einen längeren Zeitraum in Island, das sie schon so viele Jahre zuvor kennen und

KH Du bist in Lübeck aufgewachsen, hast in Stuttgart und Wien studiert und lebst nun schon seit langem in Berlin. Warum zog es Dich vor einigen Jahren nach Island?

AG Vor zwölf Jahren wurden meine Familie und ich in Berlin von isländischen Freunden eingeladen, ihr Land zu besuchen. Wir hatten das Glück, eine Reise zu machen, die sehr besonders, persönlich und abenteuerlich war.

Das war wahrscheinlich der Grund, dass Island für mich ein „Liebe-aufden-ersten-Blick“-Land wurde und ich zu einer „Islandfreundin“.

KH Island ist als touristisches Ziel bei vielen Menschen sehr beliebt. Was hat Dich dort künstlerisch interessiert?

Warum hast Du beschlossen, dort zu arbeiten?

AG Es stimmt, Island hat sehr viel Tourismus mittlerweile. Da ändert sich viel im Land. Dennoch gibt es noch weitgehend unbewohnte Landschaften. Farbklänge, Strukturen, Lichtregie, Gletscherformationen, Lavafelder, Schnee, Wasser, Gestein … Die sichtbaren und die unsichtbaren Naturkräfte haben, zurück in meinem Berliner Atelier, nachhaltig auf mich gewirkt. Als ich dann die Möglichkeit bekam, als Artist in Residence in Kolsstair zu arbeiten,

war ich mittendrin in der nordischen Materialität.

KH Wie haben diese Naturkräfte, die nordische Materialität Deine Malerei verändert? Du hast früher ja oft metallische Farben - Gold, Kupfer, Silber - in Deinen Bildern verwendet. Haben die isländischen Naturkräfte mit ihrem Verschwinden zu tun?

AG Als ich mit metallischen Farben arbeitete, lebte ich in anderen Bezügen und habe mich in einen anderen Kontext gestellt. Das große Thema war das Ornament, und ich vermalte Silber, Kupfer, Gold als die Repräsentativfarben schlechthin, in geometrisierten Mäandern. Nach meinem ersten Islandbesuch malte ich noch zwei große Bilder, auf denen Silber die Leinwand herunterläuft. Vielleicht sind es ‘Übergangsbilder‘. Doch danach habe ich mich bewusst entfernt von diesem malerischen System der für mich gleichbleibenden Formulierungen. Ich wollte ganz woanders wieder einsteigen. Island war ja ein Exit aus der Komplexität, die Suche nach neuen malerischen Möglichkeiten.

KH Ein Exit aus der Komplexität?

Schimmert in oder hinter dieser schönen Formulierung auch ein bisschen « Zurück zur Natur »?

AG Oder zurück zum Anfang? Oder resigniertes Glück? Die Verherrlichung der leeren Landschaft ist ja historisch etwas relativ Neues. Früher waren es die arkadischen Landschaften, die als schön empfunden wurden; und vielleicht kann nur eine übersättigte Gesellschaft diese extrem leere Landschaft als schön empfinden. Man stellt sich Fragen... und in der Abgeschiedenheit zu malen, draußen im Wetter, bedeutet auch sich selbst verlieren, und es kann sich etwas anderes melden in diesem Freiraum. Das Wetter, die Kultur, die Natur – das sind große Themen. In Island sind sie ganz einfach präsent.

KH Das Wetter … und das Klima! Der Klimawandel, die Klimakrise ist in Island ja sehr deutlich zu spüren und auch zu sehen. Im August wurde dort ein großer Gletscher, der Okjökull ‚begraben‘. Wissenschaftler hatten ihn schon 2014 für tot erklärt, weil das Eis geschmolzen war.

Dieser ehemalige Gletscher heißt jetzt nur noch Ok - und das ist auch der Titel eines Deiner Gemälde in der Ausstellung. Dein ‚Ok‘ ist ein Tondo - also ein kreisrundes Bild.

Dieses Format wurde seit der Antike auch oft zu dekorativen Zwecken in der Architektur verwendet … Warum hast Du dieses kreisrunde Format gewählt für den toten Gletscher?

AG In der Antike stand im Mittelpunkt eines Tondos der Mensch, weil es ihn noch zu suchen galt. Bei mir ist es die Natur. Der Kreis als Symbol für Geschlossenheit, Vollständigkeit, als Verdichtung von Energie. Eine Ode an die Natur. Als ich in Island war, erzählte man mir, dass der Wetterbericht, vor allem der samstägliche, noch heute von großer Wichtigkeit und Interesse ist. Zu wissen, wie das Wetter im ganzen Land ist, ist auch eine Sicherheitsfrage. Neben Luft- und Meeresströmungen wird das Wetter auch von den Gletschern maßgeblich beeinflusst. Der Wetterbericht im Radio beschreibt ‚kreisförmig‘, beginnend in Keflavik, eine Art Rundreise über 20 Wetterstationen. Ich begann, ihn mir als ein abstraktes Hörspiel anzuhören, erst in Island und nun auch im Berliner Atelier. Als die Gedenktafel für den Okjokull angebracht wurde, war ich in Island. Es wurde so direkt spürbar, was wir hier tun. Das Wetter macht die Landschaft!

Der OK Tondo ist ein Bild, das ich sehr konkret, fast fassbar begonnen habe, dann übermalt - ein Gletscherfragment. Wieder hervorgeholt ins Konkrete und wieder übermalt. Das ging ewig so hin und her, bis ich ihn verschwinden ließ. Übrig geblieben ist die Idee eines Gletschers - eine Fata Morgana.

KH Was sind das für Bilder, die sich die Elfen da offenbar genauer angeschaut haben?

KH Eine Fata Morgana ... ist eine optische Täuschung. Etwas Magisches? Island ist das Land der Elfen und Trolle. Wie man so sagt.

Kannst Du dazu etwas sagen?

KH In der VALENTINY Foundation zeigst Du dieses Archiv zusammen mit großformatigen Gemälden und Tondi sowie einer Soundinstallation. Die Elfen raunen « Gesamtkunstwerk » … Inwiefern kommunizieren die einzelnen Werke miteinander? Was ist Dir wichtig bei der Präsentation dieses Ensembles?

AG Als ich in Kolsstair ankam und mein Gastgeber mir das Atelier, die computergesteuerte Lichtanlage und das Areal zeigte, deutete er auf einen Felsen auf einem Hügel oberhalb des Ateliers und erklärte mir, dass dies das schönste Elfenhaus Islands sei. Und wenn die Sonne in einem bestimmten Winkel auf die Vorderseite des Felsens scheine, sehe es so aus, als würde sich die Tür im Elfenhaus öffnen.

Ich dachte bei mir, aus Berlin kommend, okay, das ist ein bisschen Islandfolklore für die Städterin. Aber ... ich mochte diese Geschichte und bin da oft hochgeklettert. Vielleicht zu oft! Denn einige Tage später - ich war dort nun alleine, kein Mensch weit und breit - arbeitete ich wieder bis spät nachts an meinen „Lavabildern“, gab einige in Passepartouts und lehnte sie an die Wand. Am nächsten Morgen waren auf den vorher tipptopp sauberen Passepartouts farbige Flecken wie kleine Abdrücke. Ich starrte darauf und dachte, das kann nicht sein. Gibt es hier Mäuse? Können die in Island waagerecht an der Wand entlanglaufen?

Mein Gastgeber kam nach einiger Zeit aus Reykjavik und ich zeigte ihm die Passepartouts und fragte ihn, woher diese Flecken kommen könnten. Er antwortete sehr ernst: „ Annette, that were the elves“.

AG Aus der Entfernung sehen Lavafelder unspektakulär aus eine grau-grün-braune Fläche. Geht man hinein wird es fast bunt, lyrisch und wuchtig, zart und grob. Es ist eine Welt, die sich auf den zweiten Blick erschließt. Es wird dann visuell spürbar, wie die Lavazunge sich ergossen hat oben aus dem Vulkan. Die Stofflichkeit und Materialität zeigt langsam entfaltete Zeit.

Ich kam nach Island mit dem Plan, große ausufernde informelle Arbeiten zu malen, gegen jede Begrenzung. Nun, in den Lavafeldern, kam die Idee etwas Kleines Delikates in diesen Leerstellen der Landschaft zu machen.

Ich begann Abdrücke zu nehmen, kleine Papiere durchs Wasser zu schicken. Ich wollte draußen in Bewegung bleiben und erst später im Atelier arbeiten. So begann ein jahrelanger Prozess und eine Art Archivierung lyrischer Aufregungen - und das Archiv geht weiter.

Diese kleinen Papiere, 9,5x9,5 cm, aus den Lavafeldern haben wohl das Elfeninteresse geweckt.

AG Ich stelle in den Räumen des Architekten François Valentiny aus; es geht also auch um Architektur. Die Wände sind weiß, die Raumfolge dynamisch. Ich verwende traditionelle, wenn auch unterschiedlich geformte Bildträger. Kreisrunde, lasierend, Schicht um Schicht, in sich geschlossene Gemälde kommunizieren mit sehr schmalen langen, offen gemalten „Gletscherfragmenten“. Die Werke werden sowohl als Solitäre gezeigt, als auch als Kunstwerke in vergleichender Reihung.

Durch die Soundinstallation wird die äußere Welt hineingelassen und die Neutralität des Raumes aufgehoben. Wichtig ist mir, ein “Kunsterlebnis“ zu entwickeln, das eine besondere Form des Denkens ermöglicht, die sich aus Wahrnehmung und Empfindung speist und woanders nicht möglich wäre.

epochenabhängig. In Island kam Annette Gössel, der Stadtmensch, mit einer extremen Natur in Verbindung. Mit der befreienden Wirkung einer kargen Ländlichkeit, die sie schon aus Spanien kannte und die sie hier wieder und mit erstaunlicher Wucht traf. Die Konfrontation und die Auseinandersetzung mit dieser "extrem leeren Landschaft", bildeten einen drastischen Gegenpol zum über die Jahrzehnte hinweg gekannten Stadtleben. Die Abgeschiedenheit, das Wetter und die Natur wirkten als befreiender Ausstieg aus dem bereits Gekannten und Gelebten und boten Raum für etwas Neues.

Es ist mir eine besondere Ehre, seine Exzellenz den Botschafter der Bundesrepublik Deutschland Dr. Heinrich Kreft, Schirmherrn von Nach Norden, nach Norden! … oder doch in den Süden? und den frisch vereidigten Minister für Wohnungsbau Henri Kox willkommen zu heißen.

Ich möchte mich bei den vielen Freunden von nah, fern und ferner bedanken, die den Weg in unser Haus gefunden haben. In der Aktion eures zahlreichen Erscheinens in Remerschen kulminieren die beiden Zustände, um die die beiden Ausstellungen kreisen, die sie heute sehen werden.

Diese Zustände heißen Freundschaft und Reise und vielleicht sind sie überhaupt Eins.

Es war in einem Wien der späten 80er Jahre, wo Annette und später auch Achim meine Eltern kennenlernten.

Die Schule, die Angewandte am Stubenring teilte sich Annette mit meinem Vater, der Jahre zuvor dort studierte.

Die Wohnung in der Zollergasse, im siebten Bezirk teilten sich alle. Und im Laufe der Jahre sollten es mehr werden.

Generationen an Studenten, Freunden und Liebenden, die 100 Quadratmeter und dank der gründerzeitlichen Deckenhöhen unzählige Kubikmeter mit ihren Gesprächen, ihrem Lachen, ihren Diskussionen und ihrem Atem füllten.

Die Zollergasse bleibt Ausgangspunkt und Schauplatz unzähliger Parallelreisen, die durch die Zeit und Generationen übergreifend nachhallen und so freu ich mich darüber, dass auch Joé, Jeremy und Lilli heute hier sind - denn sie alle haben über kurz oder lang die Welt der Zollergasse mit uns geteilt.

Die Einflüsse der Stadt und der Kultur Wiens reichen lange in das Werk Annette Gössels hinein. An dieser Stelle sei unbedingt ihre Einzelausstellung im Palais Wittgenstein von 1994 genannt. Annette stellte damals in einem Wiener Stadtpalais aus, einem Gebäude, das in die Zeit der Ringstraßenbauten fällt. Ursprünglich im Stile der italienischen Neorenaissance gestaltet war das Gebäude später, als es so in Mode war, vom Ornament befreit worden. Annettes Auseinandersetzung mit den Schriften Adolf Loos, dem Architekten und schreibenden Pionier der Wiener Moderne, der 1910 mit Ornament und Verbrechen eine neue Zeit einläutete, war in den 90ern aktuell und bleibt es bis heute.

Noch Jahre später in Berlin arbeitete Annette mit dem Thema der Repräsentationsfarben - Materialien Silber, Kuper, Gold, die sie zu geometrischen Mäandern auf Leinwand malte, verwob und so ihre Bedeutung aufbrach und neu interpretierte.

Ihr erster Islandbesuch sollte vieles verändern.

Denn wie Architektur ist besonders die Kunst orts- und

Resultat sind keine romantischen Landschaftsmalereien, sondern brutal-schöne Konfrontationen mit den Realitäten der herrschenden klimatischen Zustände. Annettes Tondos sind in Öl gemalt - eine Art der Malerei, die in Schichten entsteht. Einem geomorphen Prozess gleich, bildet sich das Endprodukt Schicht um Schicht. An dieser Stelle geht Annette einen Schritt weiter und malt Gemälde über Gemälde und das Bild das es zuletzt gibt verschleiert alles Vergangene, das auf immer, einzig Ahnung eines Gewesenseins bleiben kann.

Es bleibt die Frage, warum die Berliner Malerin, die Städterin in Luxemburg, in Remerschen ausstellt, wenn ihr Lebensmittelpunkt doch ganz woanders ist.

Darauf gibt es sicher viele Antworten und ich erlaube mir zwei Gedanken: Die europäische und weltweite Kultur lebt durch ihre Vielfalt. So macht die Berliner Künstlerin Annette Gössel Kunst in ihrem Zuhause Europa, heute in Luxemburg und das Thema ist Island. Morgen sehen wir mit ein bisschen Glück eine Ausstellung ihrer Werke über Remerschen in Neuseeland – einfach nur weil es genau auf der anderen Seite der Erde ist.

Die zweite Ahnung ist die, dass eben nichts in der Welt – und zuallerletzt Freundschaften zufällig sind. Die erste Begegnung mag es sein und das ist zuletzt das eigentliche Wunder. Jeder weitere Moment in dem wir an dem andern hängen bleiben und jeder Schritt, den wir gemeinsam gehen, jeder verpasste Geburtstag und jedes Telefongespräch zwischen den Zeitzonen – sie sind unsere Entscheidungen. Und aus diesem Grund ist Annette eben heute in Luxemburg und deswegen war sie vor zwei Jahren mit Helgi und vielen weiteren Freunden in Island und nicht sonst wo.

An dieser Stelle möchte ich den Kreis zu Proust Zitat vom Anfang schließen.

Le seul véritable voyage ne serait pas d’aller vers de nouveaux paysages (...) mais d’avoir d’autres yeux (...)

Proust beschreibt eine innere Reise, die den Blick des Subjekts auf die Welt verändert – das ist eine klare Deutungsweise. Aber ich lese den Satz in diesen Tagen auch anders und frage mich, von wessen Augen, von wessen Blick Proust denn eigentlich geschrieben hat.

Inmitten des Atlantiks gefangen, auf der Nahtstelle zweier auseinanderdriftender Erdplatten (der eurasischen und nordamerikanischen tektonischen Platten), dort wo die Elemente in ihren extremsten Formen aufeinandertreffen und sich ein Wettstreit liefern, befindet sich das fabelhafte Land der Trolle, Elfen, Geister und Feen.

Island ist die jüngste Insel Europas und in ständiger Bewegung. Feuer, Wasser, Luft und Erde. Im Süden Islands befindet sich der Sólheimajökull. Mit einer Länge von ungefähr zehn Kilometern und einer Breite von ein bis zwei Kilometern, bildet der Sólheimajökull eine der etlichen Gletscherzungen des Mýrdalsjökulls, dem viertgrößten Gletscher Islands. Der Plateaugletscher bedeckt um die einhundert Quadratkilometer der Caldera (Krater) des Vulkans Katla. Ein Spannungsfeld zwischen heiß und kalt, denn Katla zählt als besonders ausbruchsgefährdet und gehört zugleich zu den gefährlichsten Vulkanen Islands. Ein Gletscher besteht aus meterhohen Eisschichten. Wenn der Schnee im Sommer nicht schmilzt, beginnt dieser nach und nach zu vereisen. Im Laufe der Jahre bilden sich mehrere vereiste Schneeschichten. Das Eigengewicht presst diese zu dicken Eismassen zusammen. Es bilden sich aus einfachen Schichten Stockwerke, sie komprimieren sich gegenseitig und bauen aufeinander auf. Sie wachsen während des Winters, um im Sommer wieder abzunehmen; eine entfaltete Landschaftsarchitektur. Die Strukturen der Gletscher sind dynamisch und vergänglich. Die speziellen Formationen, Gletscherspalten, Bruchstellen und Gletscherhöhlen entstehen durch das langsame Vorwärtskriechen der Gebilde und verschwinden so schnell, wie sie gekommen sind. Wasser in all seinen Aggregatzuständen. Vulkanausbrüche können dramatische Sturzfluten provozieren und einen regelrechten Gletscherlauf, dem Jökulhlaup, auslösen. Nicht selten gehen die Baustrukturen der Menschen unter den gewaltigen Verschiebungen verloren. So ist die Skeiðarárbrú-Brücke beim Gletscherlauf 1996 zerstört worden.

Die Natur ist so eindrucksvoll und überfordert den menschlichen Verstand, denn wer kann schon begreifen, dass sich zehn Kilometer unter diesen massiven Schichten aus gefrorenem und zusammengepresstem Schnee und glasklarem Eis, ein Vulkan befindet, der jederzeit bereit ist auszubrechen? In der einen Woche schmilzt das Eis und es ist möglich geradezu in den Boden zu schauen und die Schichten des Gletschers, wie bei einer Baumrinde, abzulesen. Die darauffolgende Woche ist alles mit Schnee bedeckt und man befindet sich in einer abenteuerlichen Expedition; zunächst Nebel, dann Schnee, dann Sonne, gefolgt vom Regen und schließlich Hagel, um letztlich im klaren Sonnenschein aufzubrechen. Aus den Tiefen grummelt das bewegte Eis und es erinnert einen an Sigurgeir Sigurjonssons Bildband Lost in Iceland. Nobody can hear you cry. Inmitten der meterhohen Eisschichten befinden sich Treppen, die in das Eis gehackt wurden. Die simpelste Form der Architektur, in ihrem Ursprung trifft auf die Komplexität der Natur. Ein verwunschenes Land, was durch die Gewalten der Natur bestimmt wird. Ein lebensfeindlicher Raum und zugleich der friedlichste Platz auf der Erde, bestimmt von den hellen und dunklen Jahreszeiten. Die Farben treffen den Betrachter mit der vollen Intensität, so sehr, dass sie beinah unrealistisch wirken und in ihrer endlosen Tiefe und facettenreichen Dimensionen dem menschlichen Auge verloren gehen. Einem ständigen Strom von Sinneseindrücken ausgesetzt.

MOON

In October 2019 it was announced that by 2024, NASA will land astronauts on the Moon as part of their new lunar exploration program. The mission is named ARTEMIS after the Greek goddess of the moon and twin sister of Apollo and will allegedly begin a new era where robots and humans will work together to push the boundaries of what’s possible in space exploration. In collaboration with private commercial companies, NASA’s ambition is to achieve a long-term sustainable presence on the Moon enabling humans to go on to Mars and beyond1.

Since 2009, when NASA detected the presence of water ice2, the interest for the Moon was revived.

The advances in engineering that have taken place since the last Apollo missions, could nowadays turn the Moon into a station for launching rockets and satellites farther into the solar system. Lunar construction projects now seem feasible and the mining of water and precious materials could theoretically finally allow humans to inhabit what was previously believed to be a dry rock. The ambitious ARTEMIS mission comes with illustrated timelines and fancy corporate identities, entrepreneurial business ideas, gender-fair space travel, new evolved spacesuits and promises of immortality3. Blue Origin’s Jeff Bezos already last year presented his company’s Blue Moon robotic lunar lander that will bring NASA’s astronauts back to the Moon by 2024.

But how new is all this really? How spectacular?

The philosopher and cultural theorist Jean Baudrillard is most infamous in non-philosophical circles for having said that the Gulf War did not take place4. The theory is that these days, the ‘model’ precedes the event and exhausts it totally in advance. The Gulf war was played out as simulation before any tanks began rolling, and then it was played out again as simulation through videogame-style missile-runs on TV. Behind this orgiastic virtuality, the 'real' event was nowhere to be seen. Baudrillard also claimed in 1992 that the year 2000 would not happen5. So? Did it?

'No, because we were already in the 21st century long before we came to this dead point. We abused the scenario of the millennium long before it happened. Now, we stay in the 20th century. We have not really passed over. We don't live in a rational time...' 6 Maybe this revived enthusiasm for the moon is exactly such a case of an exhausted model as Baudrillard described it. Since fiction has already settled mankind to the moon in simulations, is it even possible to isolate any new information from their perfect models of simulation? This article looks back at some of the most significant moonwalks and revisits the vehicles, the habitats and the moonscapes as they were envisioned by scientists, architects and artists.

In cannons How we got there It was Jules Verne who first put the idea of inhabiting the Moon into popular literature. The heroes of his 1865 novel De la terre à la lune use a space gun to shoot a manned projectile to the moon. The book describes the ambitious undertaking down to the smallest detail; scientific explanations, figures and formulas that are however rough, remarkably accurate for the knowledge of the time. The 1872 illustrated edition of the book featured the contemporary visual artists’ imagination of the endeavor and over a century later provided inspiration for Disneyland’s Space Mountain. The retrofuturistic steampunk-detailed appearance depicts Verne’s fictional cannon named Columbiad and the ride takes the visitors on a ride from the Earth to the Moon and back.

Inspired by the fiction of Jules Verne, the father of all practical attempts at space travel K. Tsiolkovsky, sent his first man to space in what he called a ‘controllable metallic balloon’. Taking a cue from Verne, Tsiolkovsky created science-fiction stories of his own, hoping to spread the science behind his ‘unbelievable’ ideas. In 1892's On the Moon 7 , the main character is suffering from a fever dream where he imagines that he and a friend are on the Moon. He describes the weightlessness, cold, and darkness of being on the moon, and often describes things in such detail that it reads more like a lecture. Along with his designs and prototypes for rockets and space stations, he elaborated on closed-cycle biological systems to provide food and oxygen for man’s extraterrestrial habitats. His studies and blueprints inspired further works of fiction that sent man to the moon like the 1936 soviet movie Cosmic Voyage for which Tsiolkovsky worked as a scientific advisor and for which a mock-up of his envisioned rocket was built. He contributed decisively to the accuracy with which the experimental laboratory, the huge hangar, the spaceship, its engines, its interior, the illuminators, the moon’s surface, the spacesuits, the heavy weighted boots, and all other technical details were rendered and predicted by the movie, creating an atmosphere full of utopian enthusiasm and Edisonian inventiveness.

In his 1901 novel H. G .Wells sends The first Men on the Moon using a new material called ‘cavorite’ that can negate the force of gravity. Even in fantasy space ventures have always mingled idealistic and worldly motives: the novel’s narrator wants to make money, his collaborator dreams of knowledge. Together they take their first walk on the Moon. Their spherical space-ship made of steal and coated with cavorite lands on the moon that is presented as a desolate landscape, but as the sun rises the thin frozen atmosphere vaporizes and strange plants begin to grow rapidly. They also encounter insectoid lunar natives called 'Selenites' but their encounter doesn’t end well. The cavorite-coated polyhedron story found its way to the silver screen in 1964 and entered our homes via TV and the 2010.

A year later in 1902 Georges Méliès presented the first ever moonwalk to be captured on film. Voyage dans la Lune was filmed in a set built like a glasshouse and as big as a theatre, Méliès’ explorers ‘injure’ the anthropomorphic Moon while on their arrogant ventures. The Moon here is seen as another unexplored continent appealing to human’s sense of wonder in the face (pun intended) of an unexplored universe.

8_ Wernher von Braun (1912 – 1977) was a German (later American) aerospace engineer and space architect. He worked in Nazi Germany's rocket development program and following the war, he was secretly moved to the USA, along with other German scientists Operation Paperclip. He worked for the US Army on a ballistic missile program, and developed the rockets that launched the the first space satellite Explorer 1.

Fritz Lang set his Frau im Mond in 1929. The movie takes a more pragmatic and less fairy-tale approach to space travel as actual rocket scientists (including Wernher von Braun8) were involved in the making as scientific consultants. This explains the film’s portrayal of a multi-staged rocket carrying the protagonists to outer space.

In the decades to follow, fiction and popular culture continued to pave the way to the Moon and contributed significantly to both the imagination and the wish to conquer other planets. In most cases the rhetoric of ‘exploration’ extended the colonial narrative beyond the post-colonial earth and into space. The concept of the Moon as earth’s 8th continent became a common theme or aspiration in science fiction literature and cinema both in the United States and the Soviet Union. Until the end of the 60s everyone who was anyone had been to the Moon. From James Bond to Bugs Bunny and Tintin, the film and comic industry found and endless source of imagination also as direct reflection of the political and social movements of the time. The conquerors faced challenges like dangerous moon inhabitants (e.g. love-starved catwomen) or rivals from other countries on earth.

In the comedy Mouse on the Moon (1963) a small European country sent its astronaut using a Russian space rocket fueled with exploding wine. The satire of the space race and international politics produced surreal pictures merging high-end technology with provincial settings.

In 1968 Stanley Kubrick documented a detailed Moon landing scene in his legendary 2001: Space Odyssey. This scene had a huge impact among an audience who was anticipating to watch the Apollo mission landings on their TV in less than a year.

In Diamonds are Forever (1971), Sean Connery as James Bond interrupts the filming of a moon landing scene and steals the moon buggy to escape.

Docufictions such as Man and the Moon (USA, 1955) and Luna (USSR 1965) provided humans with a live action simulation from inside and outside the manned shuttles that reached the lunar surface.

Man on the Moon is Part of a famous Disney television series. It begins with a humorous look with man's fascination with the Moon through animation. This segment features characteristics of the Moon depicted from William Shakespeare and children's nursery rhymes to lunar superstitions and scientific research. The second part features scientists (including Wernher von Braun) who give details about their voyage vision including models of the space- crafts and the space stations that will be constructed in outer space as an outpost to the Moon.

Luna also consists of two parts, the first part is a retrospective of man’s achievements in outer space up to its time and the second part shows how the Moon in the near future will be developed by people from a hypothetical first lunar mission to lunar cities and laboratories.

There is an anecdote that shortly before NASA launched Apollo 11, it received a letter from the Union of Persian Storytellers, begging NASA to change the plan: A Moon landing would rob the world of its illusions, and rob the union’s members of their livelihood.

In the decades since Apollo 11, NASA has invented Earth-mapping satellites, launched the Hubble Space Telescope, collaborated on the International Space Station, and studied Mars. But none of these projects have generated the broad and childlike wonder of the Moon.

After we suited up and rode our astral vehicles to the moon, the most comprehensive Lunar Base Handbook 9 gave us instructions on how to design and build a lunar base, while it examined the physiological and psychological aspects of space travel and extraterrestrial settlements.

Over the years scientists, engineers and artists have provided us with designs that have taken into consideration all intricate technical parameters including site selection and specialized infrastructure. Rigid or inflatable structures, igloos, railroads, ecospheres, domes, space ports, laboratories, observatories, sports arenas, mining and manufacturing plants – man has inhabited them all.

The key to the colonization of the new frontier no longer lay in the invention of rockets and armed weapons, but in the management of the human physiology. For humans to transport themselves into outer space, they would have to carry along an artificial environmental earth bubble. This closed system with its internal circulation and recirculation of matter and ideas within a defined radius and circumference became a theme with various cultural reflections in the 60s and 70s 11.

The concept of the closed resource regeneration systems migrated from the space program to countercultural architectural groups experimenting with autonomous living and gave us built manifestations of our inhabitation of the universe. The famous Earthrise 12 image taken by Apollo 8 in 1968 contributed decisively to the collective feeling of anxiety in cultural imagination and to a broad literature projecting plans for our future survival within what Buckminster Fuller famously called ‘spaceship earth’ 13.

This immersive imagery might also be held accountable for a genealogy of closed resource regeneration systems, or smaller highly engineered earth microcosms. The vision of an enclosed environment placed in extreme uninhabitable worlds intrigued architects and designers over the years and established a repertoire of research techniques, a set of tools for thinking of the design process and a language as basis for experimental spatial practice.

Thinkers conceptualizing moon cities throughout the 50’s and 60’s ranged from author Arthur C. Clarke, who already in 1954 described in full detail the igloo-shaped buildings on the moon powered by a nuclear reactor, to the participants in 1968’s Stanford-Ames Summer Faculty Workshop in Engineering Systems Design, who took mankind to their MOONLAB, a moon base located close to the lunar equator 10. The MOONLAB program began with the first Apollo moon landing. By 1976 a rotating three-person crew lived in the first habitat for three months at a time. The habitat had three stories, the top floor was used for storage and provided radiation protection for the crew as it was buried under several feet of lunar regolith. Gradually the crew expanded to include 24 people and in 1982 farms were built that housed plants grown in lunar soil and provided 75 percent of the crew’s food needs. In 1984 a 40-inch telescope was brought to the moon and showed humankind the way to further explorations into the galaxies. In 2001 the lunar base was inhabited by 1.100 residents as documented in Kubrick’s Space Odyssey.

Closed recirculatory systems went beyond being just a cultural fascination with the space program and became a key concept for emerging architectural concerns related to the future of habitation. In many ways, the detachment from the main urban supply networks depicted a collective skepticism towards the urban condition, which was portrayed by both the counterculture and the space program as a catastrophic environment that restrains the imagination and the freedom of the individual.

Looking at the habitat as a total organic system, projects like Graham Caine's Eco-House, Paolo Soleri's Arcosanti, the Earthship architecture concept and Biosphere II, allowed us to redefine and test our earthly habitats before migrating to the moon.

>> Graham Caine’s Eco-House was built in South London in 1972 as a laboratory and living experiment. It was was a fully functional integrated system that converted human waste to methane for cooking, as well as maintained a hydroponic greenhouse with radishes, tomatoes, and even bananas. After having lived in the house for two years with his family, Caine was asked to destroy it in 1975. The Eco-House was an island uprooted from its urban and detached from the man urban supply networks context like its own planet, but very much in exchange with physiological parameters: temperature, water, light, humidity, and so forth calculated in numeric data.

<< Founded by Paolo Soleri in the desert of Arizona and following the principles or arcology (architecture & ecology), Arcosanti served as an urban laboratory to test and demonstrate an alternative human habitat. He began construction in 1970 with the goal to explore and demonstrate how urban conditions could be improved while minimizing the destructive impact on the earth.

Up to this day Arcosanti has permanent habitats and continues to develop as an experiential learning center and walk-through demonstration of how to pursue efficient alternatives to urban sprawl.

Biosphere 2 was conceived to demonstrate the viability of closed ecological systems to support and maintain human life in outer space.

It would explore the web of interactions within life systems in a structure with different areas based on various biological biomes.

In addition to the several biomes and living quarters for people, there was an agricultural area and work space to study the interactions between humans, farming, technology and the rest of nature as a new kind of laboratory for the study of the global ecology. Its mission was a two-year closure experiment with a crew of eight humans. Long-term it was seen as a precursor to gain knowledge about the use of closed biospheres in space colonization. As an experimental ecological facility it allowed the study and manipulation of a mini biospheric system without harming Earth's biosphere.

The experiments ran into problems including low amounts of food and oxygen, die-offs of many animals and plants, group dynamic tensions among the resident crew, outside politics and a power struggle over management and direction of the project.

By 1972 we had done it all. We colonized, we transported our 'civilized world', we appropriated and when the excitement was over we left without picking up our trash. A long list of equipment parts, tools, commemorative, artistic and personal objects lie on the surface of the moon as indisputable evidence that the Moon did become Earth’s 8th continent.

The lunar surface is pitted with craters made by crashed spacecraft. Some, like early Soviet probes, were designed to interact with the Moon surface, while others, like the Apollo lunar modules, were scuttled after their missions were complete. And a fair number of spacecraft collided with the Moon by accident. As the Moon has no atmosphere, and therefore no wind, lunar soil is engraved with the footsteps of every visitor. The landscape itself has become a map of their curiosities. The lunar tourist can visit defunct exploring rovers, flags, diverse memorabilia as well as less romantic leftovers, like bags of human waste.

Preserved by the vacuum of space, this moonscape has been left undisturbed for nearly six decades. FOR ALL MOONKIND, a non-profit organization that seeks to protect Human Heritage in outer space, argues that this merits the same recognition and protection as common heritage on Earth. As the Moon is about to get crowded again, the nostalgia of what the future looked like in the past, finds its voice through space lawyers and policy makers who develop new strategies to protect this legacy 14.

Right now, there are around 50 different places where human culture has landed, and they’re quite diverse. A huge amount of USSR stuff, a huge amount of US stuff – but also Japanese and Indian and Chinese.

The Moon is already culturally diverse and all these different cultures are reflected upon its valuable archaeological record. One can well imagine a physical touristic theme park on site, but it is also likely there will be a form of lunar tourism, which involves us projecting ourselves into robots and going for a little jaunt across the lunar surface 15.

What was in the 70s a holy place for the future it was promising, has now become a holy place for the optimistic past it manifests. The Apollo mission landing sites have thus become an archive of remnants that say more about humankind than any carefully designed monument ever could. If we wish to remember these glorious futures, we ought to account for all that was left behind, both the grand gestures — and the garbage.

'The more the future escapes us, the more the quest for a return to origins, for a return to the primal scene (as an individual human being or as human collective) becomes our obsession. As a consequence, we try to collect evidence: the evidence of time past, of human evolution. (…) There is, then, a recapitulation in reverse which stands as the complete opposite of a living memory. deal with death. Only today, the statues and temples have been replaced by heroic expeditions that promise to rescue humanity before it goes down with ‘spaceship earth’. Apollo and Artemis are not anthropomorphic figures anymore, but missions offering hope for all of earth’s flora and fauna.

Should Earth be destroyed -be it a wayward asteroid or a nuclear war- safeguarding the species requires extra-terrestrial placement of people and their culture. A lunar doomsday vault can be a secure facility to provide humans with all the intellectual and other resources needed to rebuild humanity. The Alliance to Rescue Civilization 17 (ARC), an organization devoted to the establishment of an off-Earth 'backup' of human civilization, has already envisioned in detail the lunar facility, that in the event of a catastrophe, will be prepared to reintroduce lost technology, art, history, crops and livestock. It contains information of humans, plants and animals as well as all necessary processes for survival. Like seed vaults already established on earth18 the lunar ark includes actual seeds, plants and genetic material to aid the terraforming of regions on the Moon or the re-population of the earth once the circumstances allow it.

On a similar note the company Celestis 19 is here to fulfill humanity’s dream of immortality 'up in the heavens' in a quite literal way. By launching a symbolic amount of cremated remains into near-space, Earth orbit, lunar surface or even beyond (depending on your budget), you or your loved one will venture into space as part of a space mission and ride alongside a commercial or scientific satellite, thus becoming one with the cosmos.

For those that cannot wait that long, TIME has launched an app20 through which one can embark on the Apollo 11 simulation, a most accurate 3-D re-creation of the moon landing. Told in two chapters, 'Landing on the Moon' allows one to witness Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s landing; in Chapter 2, one can explore the 'Surface of the Moon', walk around the lunar module, and watch Neil Armstrong in his space suit as he plants the flag.

Is it even possible any longer to set clear boundaries between illusion and genuine reflections of our basic realities? Simulation has embedded itself within our social and cultural landscape as a primary means of communication and representation; sophisticated semiotics and advanced tooling render fictions better than any reality. We have dreamt of the Moon, we have packed our earthly microcosms and went camping on the Moon, we have trashed the Moon and went out looking for farther colonies. And once we peered over the edge of tomorrow and discovered disenchantment in the spectacle provided by high-tech accomplishments, we seek to relive the thrill the Moon landing spread.

Adopting Baudrillard’s theory, that the ‘model’ preceded the event and exhausted it totally in advance, the Moon landing never happened and will never happen.

I'd arranged to meet a friend who was staying in a part of town I'd never had a reason to visit. I did have a vague memory of having driven through it ten or so years prior when it was just a place on a map that a road went through. There hadn't been anything to stop for. Before I left the apartment, I checked the hotel's location and discovered that the road I remembered was now six lanes in each direction and with interchanges to two new highways leading off into the desert to places I'd never known existed. I didn't have the time to enjoy losing myself so I took a taxi instead.

We left the city proper behind us and crossed the new bridge to join the new road linking to the southbound artery. For the next fifteen minutes or so the driver and I talked about junctions, bypasses and flyovers and how much smoother and better it was now. We didn't have much more to say as we wove and merged with the flow at a steady 110.

I was glad I hadn't driven. I sat back and relaxed. I was still

07 looking at the road ahead but not with the attention or awareness of a driver.

I saw me on this road as being a point on a line that came into existence when the origin and destination were connected. It was a new place linking two others to create a new place that was neither. The road existed to take me from one to the other but as a state of mind it didn’t exist for the sake of either. Its sole purpose was for me to move along it. Even its interchanges were designed so people travelling in one direction would never have to stop or slow down or even be aware of anyone travelling in another. Me and everyone else were like salmon swimming upstream. The only direction was forward and only thing that mattered was our base compulsion to move with everyone else and participate in this mass performance.

I became aware of clusters of apartment buildings coming into view in the middle distance and then retreating before the next cluster appeared. The buildings weren’t thinning out between market gardens or giving way to suburbia as usually happens when one leaves a city but nor were they becoming denser or taller as usually happens upon entering one. The scenery was forever changing but there was no discernible pattern or logic to it. It wasn’t changing into or away from anything and so there was no sense of leaving one place behind or approaching another. I was stuck in space.

The road powered on indifferent to these buildings and the buildings, for their part, were equally indifferent in return, revealing neither a preference for turning away from the road or acknowledging it as the reason for their existence. These were no upstart constructions. Some were as high as fifty stories, well turned out and standing proud and slightly aloof like someone having arrived too early at a party. They were designed to be seen but without any concern for who or from where. They stood where they were without apology or pretense. I imagined myself on one of the balconies, admiring this mighty road.

Before I knew it, the sun had set and the physicality of lorries, taxis, buses and cars was transformed into red taillights moving at speed along the yellow road. Materiality disappeared and, for a while, so did time and I was in some third place where only the present existed independent of the past and its regrets and the future and its anxieties. It was a moment of exquisite calm.

“Sorry,” the driver interrupted as he braked to avoid a car cutting in front of us. We exited onto a cloverleaf that led to an eight-lane carriageway and then exited again, this time onto a feeder road with grassy verges dotted with poinciana trees and frangipani. Whatever lay beyond was concealed by hedges of bougainvillea. The highway had been grand and open but this world was finite and managed. The driver pulled into the driveway and slowed to anticipate a speed bump. I lowered the window and let in the night air heavy with the perfume of petunias just watered. The poinciana trees were alive with the sound of birds stopping over en-route from West Asia to East Africa for the winter. I paid and thanked the driver and wished him a good night. The doorman smiled as he made an ever-so-slightly florid yet welcoming gesture towards the entrance, courteously activating the motion sensor for me. I was directed across the lobby and towards the pool terrace where I recognized my friend. A lifeguard in his elevated chair was watching two children splashing in the pool that, as it was only the middle of October, would still be chilled to twenty-eight degrees. On the distant bank of the artificial lake was the theme building that began to cycle through its light show at the same moment as the sounds of a live band beginning their first set for the evening could be heard.

Small circular ripples like raindrops revealed the presence of carp in the lake that provided something for the people in the hotel rooms, serviced apartments and short-term stay apartments to look over. It made a place. It was something there, something to prevent there being no there there. It also made an "over there" on the other side for people to be curious about. I found it more and more difficult to hold on to thoughts like these. I let them go. There was probably no there there. Wherever it was, was quite fine without one. And nobody including me even cared if there was or not. At last I relaxed and could enjoy being in precisely this time at precisely this place.

A waiter had wheeled out an evaporative cooler and was positioning it a comfortable distance from where my friend was sitting smoking and picking at a plate of strawberries dipped in the chocolate fountain. I sat down and, after a professionally discreet interval, the waiter came over and greeted us, enquired how we were and, upon seeing the strawberries, suggested we might enjoy two Brandy Alexanders. My friend and I were momentarily confused. We couldn't see what needed complementing or enhancing. Everything was already perfect. Nothing could be done to make it any more so. So we ordered Hemingway Daiquiris and drank to the end of times.

Today the term haiku is used to describe poems with three-line 17 syllable structure. They are rooted in the Japanese culture. This beautifully organised poems have always fascinated me for their rigour, force and grace. They are so perfect that I consider myself not suited to create one. I define myself as an experimental spirit, growing with each error that I make and thus not being able to express myself in this pure state.

I am presenting my voyage through four non-haiku three-line poems.

It all started in Montreal, in Canada, where I was travelling alone to discover the spirit of the city. I was touched by an art piece and I remained in the contemporary art museum for hours until the closing time. It was the video of a common performance by the band National and Ragnar Kjartansson “A lot of sorrow”. The song “Sorrow” was being played one hundred times at Moma PS1 in New York, in 2013. During 6 hours of performance, as the artists got more and more tired, I could feel their emotions rising until the moment when they had teardrops in their eyes. The song continued on and on, relentlessly, like a continuously breath, never boring, always with a new interpretation accompanied by a strong will to keep on going. Beyond the melancholic lyrics this song represents for me a compelling desire to continue moving on a chosen path.

element to create a photographic water landscape. I continued to whistle my “Sorrow” song as I was thinking of how to find fog during a hot summer time, “because I don't wanna get over you”. One day it happened. One day a friend sent a message early in the morning saying there was fog on the lake. I rushed to my car. As I was driving I felt my emotions changing: from joy to deception. The sun was fading away behind the fog. Like in John Carpenter's movie, the fog grew whiter and whiter, thicker and thicker like a phantom with a soul of its own, covering the whole landscape, making the sun fade away. Everything was drowned in a milky wave of fog. All ghosted.

I kept looking for my moment. I came back several times. I checked the weather and I learned that fog was formed when cold water was in contact with worm rays of sun. I looked for the rainy day that cooled the water followed by the sunny, warm day. Like in a magic song, all connected. I was again the driver in the the night, hoping. I was again the fisherman waiting in the morning song of birds. I was again the explorer of nature. This time, the fog was floating on the water with a fragile soft touch. The sun was rising covering everything in gold.

Suddenly I was realising that our live are full with moments when we feel that something fragile and beautiful has just slipped away. We think we have it in our hands and yet it slips away like a soft skin fish swimming through our fingers into the crystal water.

My enchantment for light and colours pushed me to get up again and again, better prepared, a traveller in the night.

I couldn't get over the idea that I was so close and yet so far away from my magic moment. I learned when I was supposed to arrive and found the exact places that I wanted to shoot.

When I took the photographies, I had the right pinkish and bluish light, the water was beautifully still and birds were singing early in the morning sun. When I was waiting for the sun to rise and lighten the landscape I felt like a fisherman that comes early in the morning and waits with patience for the right moment, while enjoying the liveliness of the waking nature. The moment was good and yet I still felt like something was slipping away.

Later on, while talking to a local, I learned about the fog that sets sometimes on the water. I started looking for a new

I was brought to do an architecture photography project in Remerschen and I have decided to shoot it during the “blue hour”, early in the morning, before sunrise. I remember my first day: the fascination of early morning changing sky, from black to blue and pink as I was driving to Remerschen. I arrived after the sun rose. It was too late, and the light was not soft any more. I was very disappointed that I couldn't have my right colours. I felt a lot of sorrow for missing what I thought as being the right moment for my photography.

An architectural investigation into non-binary worlds

An Exhibition shown at MAGAZIN – Space for Contemporary Architecture in Vienna from the 8th of November to the 14th of December 2019.

With POLYCEPHALY – Architecture in the Age of Non-Binary Worlds the Barcelona-based duo Takk created a two-piece installation, which proposes a pluripolar reality: “Due to the emergence of concepts such as the Anthropocene linked to the climate crisis, to the higher relevance of technology in all spheres of our daily routines, or to the implosion of concepts such as gender, it seems that it no longer makes sense to continue working from the construction of reality through binary relationships (nature-culture, man-woman, rational-irrational…).

Architecture, as a practice with a main role in the construction of our societies cannot ignore these issues.

The proposal is based on the indistinct work with different kinds of materialities that are mediated through the disciplinary knowledge of structure and construction and the contribution of contemporary technology.”

Takk // Mireia Luzárraga + Alejandro Muiño is a space for architectural production based in Barcelona and Madrid focused in the development of experimental and speculative material practices in the intersection between nature and culture in the contemporary framework. Between Modernity and the Archaic Stefania Strouza's sculptural installations oscillating between Le Corbusier and Medea

In July 1933, the ship Patris II sponsored by CIAM (Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne), left Marseilles, its final destination being Athens. The main representatives of the Modern Movement were aboard, one among them being the architect Le Corbusier. 36 years later, Pier Paolo Pasolini will reenact in filmic terms another journey, this time from the East to the West, that of Euripide’s Medea, played by Maria Callas. Stefania Strouza’s expansive installations take as their starting point these two journeys, inserting them into a larger narrative related to Greek modernity, informed by the West-East dipole and the conflicting imaginaries it entails.

Stefania was born in Zakynthos, Greece and after spending many years abroad in England, Austria, Germany and the U.S.A., she currently lives and works in Athens.

Her practice explores how cultural narratives of diverse origins (such as archaic cultures, indigenous cosmologies, or European modernity) move across space to generate new cross-cultural syncretisms.

Her sculptures and installations combine material objects—either human-made or natural—that connect contemporary reality with forgotten or suppressed ways of human existence.

Strouza reformulates historically specific forms— such as antique maps, architectural details, or textile designs— in non-representational abstract ways, revealing unexpected meanings that cast doubt on established cultural hierarchies. Sometimes appearing as autonomous entities, other times composing an architectural environment, her works invite the viewer to focus on the physicality of the objects, rather than eliciting primarily a cognitive response.

Her oeuvre evidences her openness to different disciplines, oscillating between western and eastern influenced ideas and visual languages. In her recent works she investigates the relationship between modernist vocabulary and its fragmented historical and subjective substantiation.

To a certain degree sacredness is in the eye of the beholder is a work in progress, articulated in a number of versions or acts. The starting point for this project lays in two journeys: one made to Athens by important representatives of modernism for the “Congrès Internationaux d’Architecture Moderne” in 1933, and one made by Euripides' Medea in the 1969 film by Pier Paolo Pasolini with Maria Callas in the leading role.

The series of international congresses for Neues Bauen (from 1928 to 1959) defined discussions of urban planning and the development of modern architecture.1 The ship

Patris II sailed from Marseilles in 1933, bringing established leaders of the avant-garde – like Le Corbusier, László Moholy-Nagy, Otto Neurath and Fernand Léger – as well as young, up-and-coming architects to Athens in order to discuss the “functional city” during the voyage. But this journey through the Aegean also marked a shift in the geographical focus of the CIAM and changed its key themes. There was a turning away from the centre of Europe towards the Méditerranée, to the vernacular buildings of Greek villages with their

white cubes and to the original architectonic ideals expressed in the temples of antiquity. For all those who could not be there, the white ship also conjured the image of an ark, on which the ideas of modernism could weather the harsh storms of the war years.2 The congress exercised an influence on Greek artists of the period and simultaneously raised questions about what constituted Greek modernism (picture 7).

36 years later, Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini staged a journey in film: a free interpretation of an ancient Greek myth, based on the literary model by Euripides dating from 431 B.C. In the film Pasolini uses motifs from the myth of Medea and the saga of the Argonauts to show an encounter between two cultures. The incompatible nature of these cultures causes the relationship of the two leading characters–the pragmatic, rationalist Greek Jason and the archaic, animist priestess Medea–to end in a bloody tragedy.3 In the project To a certain degree sacredness is in the eye of the beholder Stefania Strouza sets these two journeys–one historical and one cinematic, one from West to East, and the other from East to West–into a broader debate on Greek modernism. Using this narrative as her point of departure, the artist creates a number of sculptural presentations. The works are connected and permit different associations: from modernist design and archaic culture to a group of hybrid constructions that fluctuate between functionalism, decoration and abstraction, and ultimately to geographical locations. These fragile aspects function as quiet pointers, symbolically examining the encounter between East and West, where the tradition of the visual language of antiquity confronts a modern European understanding of the world.

sewing patterns for robes that could be used for solemn occasions, ceremonies or performances or the garment Maria Callas wore for the Medea film (picture 6). Stefania Strouza prints a pattern suggestive of mythological models onto the material by hand, using acrylic paint. The pattern derives from the original lettering of 'Medea' from the Pasolini film. This is here printed on bronze-coloured artificial leather whose structural and haptic qualities are similar to those of human skin.

For Act V as hosted by the Neue Galerie in Innsbruck in 2015, Stefania Strouza presented a series of collages (pictures 2-4) made using stills from a documentary film of the CIAM trip to Athens made by László Moholy-Nagy.6 Screenshots are 6_ Video: http://www. ciam4.com/video-en/ciam-4-filmed-by-laszlo-moholy-nagy/

used as positive and negative images, mirrored and printed onto photo paper. To do this, the artist selected three shots from the film in which the ship is just passing through Corinth Canal. Stefania Strouza consciously selected this moment of the voyage, as it also symbolizes the transition from West to East. The reduction of the images to sculptural and structural abstractions leads on directly to the other pieces of the series.

The collages of the documentary film are reminiscent of the structure of skeletons, which is echoed in the sculptural elements made from steel, and the surfaces of the photographs of Athena remind us of the haptic quality of skin, so referring to the textile materials used.

The concrete objects that complete her installations resemble architectural models or parts of a Greek column (picture 11). They are found in varying forms and refer to forms

that support or are supported themselves, although in some cases they appear as in a state of incompleteness inviting the visitors to a journey between East and West and to an investigation into modernism on both sides of the Corinth Canal.

She studied Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens and completed her postgraduate studies at the Art, Space & Nature Institute of Edinburgh College of Art (2010) and at the Textual Sculpture Department of the among others at the 6th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, Greece; Wiener Art Foundation, Austria (solo); Neue Galerie Innsbruck, Austria (solo); Athens and Epidaurus Festival 2014, Greece (solo); and the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Greece.
