This ‘Europe Square’ has become a real point of attraction that tells the story of Europe, with its plates fixed to the ground, its square in front of the cubic building that has become the Schengen Museum - with a tourist reception area and a multimedia room - and its bistro on the covered terrace, where we have also set up a green area with trees and even ivy on the plastered façade.
We also redeveloped the esplanade to give it a more urban character by creating a bicycle path, pavilions, reinforced concrete retaining walls, seating and green areas, where we planted trees and hedges.
Cette place de l’Europe est devenue un véritable point d’attraction qui raconte l’histoire de l’Europe, avec ses plaquettes fixées au sol, sa place devant le bâtiment cubique devenu le musée Schengen – avec un foyer d’accueil touristique et une salle multimédia – et son bistrot à la terrasse couverte, où nous avons également aménagé un espace vert avec des arbres et même du lierre sur la façade en crépi.
Nous avons également réaménagé l’esplanade en créant une piste cyclable, des pavillons, des murs de soutènement en béton armé, des gradins et des espaces verts, où nous avons fait planter des arbres et des haies afin de lui donner un caractère plus urbain.

This is how we came up with the idea of erecting the Columns of the Nations on the esplanade along the Moselle River. These are columns that tell stories, and are thus part of a very old European tradition: that of the columns of Roman antiquity, on which heroic and military narratives were often found in the form of bas-relief.
C’est ainsi que nous est venue l’idée d’ériger les Colonnes des nations sur l’esplanade, en bordure de la Moselle. Il s’agit de colonnes qui racontent des histoires, et se situent ainsi dans une très ancienne tradition européenne : celle des colonnes de l’Antiquité romaine, sur lesquelles se trouvaient souvent, sous forme de bas-relief, des narrations héroïques
Trajan’s column is a good example thereof. It is a Roman triumphal column located on Trajan’s forum in Rome, whose bas-relief, which spirals around its shaft, commemorates the victory of Emperor Trajan (53-117) over the Dacians in the two Dacian wars at the very beginning of the first century AD.
La colonne de Trajan en est un bon exemple. Il s’agit d’une colonne triomphale romaine située sur le forum de Trajan à Rome, dont le bas-relief, qui s’enroule en spirale autour de son fût, commémore la victoire de l’empereur Trajan (53-117) sur les Daces, lors des deux guerres dites daciques au tout début du iie siècle de notre ère.
Each country has the opportunity to tell its story through a small bronze sculpture. France, for example, decided to put a star on it with an Eiffel Tower and a bicycle.
The Columns of Nations are hollow, almost nine metres high and bear bronze stars that symbolise the current Schengen countries. The places left free, which have not yet received stars, are intended to get some if other countries join the European area in the future.
Chaque pays y a la possibilité de se raconter au moyen d’une petite sculpture en bronze. La France, par exemple, a décidé d’y faire monter une étoile avec une tour Eiffel et un vélo.
Les Colonnes des nations sont creuses, mesurent près de neuf mètres de haut et portent des étoiles de bronze qui symbolisent les pays actuels de l’espace Schengen. Les places laissées libres, qui n’ont pas encore reçu d’étoiles, sont destinées à les recevoir quand d’autres pays rejoindront l’espace européen à l’avenir.

An der aler Schwemm with its covered terrace, which, it must be said, is one of the places that sells the most white wine in the whole region.
Nous avions achevé le projet du musée de Schengen, ainsi que le bistrot An der aler Schwemm avec sa terrasse couverte qui, il faut le dire, est l’un des établissements qui vend le plus de vin blanc dans toute la région.
The mayor of the municipality at the time was Roger Weber, a very dedicated politician who knew how to defend his projects vigorously. At the same time, he had envisaged the development of the public area in front of the museum - in order to make Schengen visible on a global scale and to highlight what this place represents. In fact, it is where the famous agreement was signed in 1985, which foreshadowed the creation of the Schengen area allowing the free movement of people and goods in Europe.
Le maire de la commune, à l’époque, était Roger Weber, un politicien très engagé qui savait défendre avec énergie ses projets. Il avait envisagé, en parallèle, l’aménagement de l’espace public devant le musée – afin de rendre Schengen visible au niveau mondial et de mettre en avant ce que représente cet endroit, où a été signé, en 1985, le fameux accord qui préfigure la création de l’espace Schengen permettant la libre circulation des personnes et des marchandises en Europe.

In the middle of the Moselle lies the Pontonboot, which not only serves as a tourist information point, but also offers various souvenirs as well as local and regional products.
Au milieu de la Moselle se trouve le Pontonboot, qui sert non seulement de point d’information touristique, mais offre également divers souvenirs et produits locaux et régionaux.
All these places and elements are linked by their harmonious and homogeneous external appearance, for which we duly used the local Schengener Putz.
Tous ces endroits et éléments sont liés par leur aspect harmonieux et homogène extérieur, pour lequel nous avons utilisé, comme il se devait, le Schengener Putz local.
