With a focus towards building healthy relationships with landlords and ensuring them of a trustworthy ‘all-inclusive’ service is what makes Complete Property unique to other competitors in the Devon area. With four other offices spread across Devon, Complete have taken the plunge and have recently opened up their 5th office in Plymouth in October 2019. We spoke with Emma Foreman (Lettings Manager) to find out more about Complete.

omplete was founded in 2007 by, the current chairman, Will Smith where the business later branched out into the lettings industry. Emma has continued to grow this side of the business since joining in 2014. Their demand for clients in and around Plymouth was growing fast through word of mouth and recommendations so a decision to add Plymouth to their network of offices was made.

Their Plymouth office is shared with their recommended mortgage advisors – The Mortgage Advice Bureau, located in Crownhill. The office is simply just their hub, as Complete believe that a personal service is key to ensuring clients’ peace of mind. In normal times, their meetings are ‘out on the road’, meaning either at the clients’ property or out for a coffee. Complete property covers the majority of Devon with offices in Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Bovey Tracey, Exeter and their newest office being here in Plymouth.

After completing a University degree, Emma started in the lettings industry, collecting knowledge and experience straight away.

She has been working for Complete for almost 7 years now and has enjoyed seeing the business grow and adapt to new situations. Emma’s role in the team is to run the lettings department for the

whole company. This involves various trips across to their 4 other offices to ensure their lettings business is running smoothly.

Building relationships with landlords is at the core of what Emma does. She aims to create a lettings environment and service that landlords can trust and therefore have peace of mind.

All 5 of their offices are now open however they are of course adhering to the ever-changing government guidelines. Face-to-face appointments have resumed but a face mask is to be worn at all times as well as appropriate social distancing.

NATIONAL CHOLESTEROL MONTH Help raise awareness about high cholesterol levels this October and learn more about cholesterol with HEART UK.

E

very year in October, efforts are made to raise awareness about the effects of high cholesterol.

HEART UK holds events and talks to raise awareness and fundraise towards vital support.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is actually needed in our bodies to stay healthy, but it is when the levels get too high, it becomes a problem. Cholesterol is a type of blood fat which plays a vital role in making all of our cells work how they should. It also makes hormones which keeps your bones strong and it is needed for digestion to make Vitamin D.

Did you know?

HEART UK HEART UK is an active organisation who are centred around raising awareness about cholesterol. This year they are running a ‘Let’s Talk About Cholesterol’ campaign to help promote the importance of knowing your cholesterol levels.

They are also running ‘The Great Cholesterol Challenge’ to help fundraise.

Being active is a major part of looking after your cholesterol levels, keeping your heart healthy and helping to prevent heart disease. This challenge involves walking, running, swimming or cycling 100 miles in October. You can apply online to get involved with this challenge at www.heartuk.org.uk.

You can get a cholesterol test on the NHS by contacting your local GP. They will typically recommend you get a test if you are over the age of 40, overweight or if high cholesterol runs in your family.

There are two ways they are able to check your cholesterol levels. Either with a blood test which will give you results within a few days or with a finger-prick test which gives results within a few minutes.

High cholesterol can be inherited and it can also affect people who are slim and otherwise healthy. So, it is very important to get a test as there is no other way of knowing your levels.

“Over half of UK adults have raised cholesterol which can lead to heart disease.”

There are many changes to your lifestyle that your doctor can prescribe if your levels are particularly high, which can all vary based on your current lifestyle and diet.

If this sounds like too much of a challenge, too soon, then there are other ways to raise awareness and fundraise, for example, holding a ‘National Cholesterol Month’ stand at work or hosting a healthy bake sale.

By making simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can instantly help keep your cholesterol levels at a healthy rate. Eating healthier, avoid smoking, cutting down on alcohol and adding more exercise into your daily routine will help make a big difference.

WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY Saturday 10th October

On the 10th October every year, we recognise World Mental Heath Day. Find out more about mental health and how to make a difference on this years World Mental Health Day.

ental health has been a common subject for a lot of us during the recent pandemic. It has been a part of so many of our lives due to the strange circumstances and the changes we have had to make to our daily routines. People are often unaware of what mental health is or are unsure of how to help someone who is suffering with their mental wellbeing.

There is also a stigma attached to mental health problems therefore people feel less comfortable to talk about their problems.

If you are in good mental health, you will make the most of your potential, cope with life and play a full part in your family, workplace, community and among friends.

Having a mental health problem can drastically vary from person to person, and people deal with this in many different ways.

Whether its anxiety, fear, stress or feeling lonely, sad or depressed, any ongoing negative feeling means there is an issue with your mental health and the quicker this is dealt with, the quicker things will start turn around.

Looking after your mental health is just as important as your physical health and there are many different ways you can help your mental wellbeing.

Firstly, connect with other people, it is vital you keep in contact with friends, relatives and partners so that they can supply you with the help you need. Talking to someone can also be just what is needed when something is plaguing you.

Taking care of your physical health also helps take care of your mental health by raising your self-esteem and distracting your brain into something active. It also causes a chemical change in your brain

moment. Taking up mindfulness activities such as Yoga, meditation, a peaceful hobby or even video games can focus the mind on what is happening at that moment. Whether its breathing, dancing or colouring within the lines, these simple activities that you probably do everyday will help to improve your thoughts and feelings as you soak in the world around you.

Raising awareness is the next step and there are plenty of events or things you can do to get involved and help to spread awareness.

Tea & Talk is a lovely little way to get together with friends and family, eat cake, put the kettle on whilst raising funds for the cause. This also a great way to talk about what might be troubling you.

You can do your bit with as little as ÂŁ1.90 if you purchase a green ribbon pin badge. Why not buy a few for your workplace, school or Tea & Talk event!

Dedication, a few helpful connections and a strong passion for squash is the reason why Fort Stamford and it’s four squash courts are still here today. The backbone of Fort Stamford belongs in the hands of one very hardworking and unstoppable man, Royston Sumner. A sense of community and diversity is at the heart of this club, and Royston and his team have gone above and beyond to make Fort Stamford a very safe gym at this time of uncertainty. We spoke with Royston to discover how Fort Stamford Health & Fitness came about, a little bit about his background and the important measures they have in place to reassure their members during the coronavirus pandemic to make this club one of the safest in Plymouth.

quash and more latterly Racketball, are at the very heart of this health club. As a junior, Royston played when it was just a 4 court squash club sited in the dungeons of the fortress. 10 more courts were then built, with a pool and snooker room, in its moat over 40 years ago.

Royston was a high profile squash player, he moved to Paignton in his mid 20’s as an insurance loss adjuster, captained the county squash team and was playing for Newton Abbot squash club at that time. It was the social side of the sport that he found almost as appealing as the sport itself! In the absence of a manager, he continued to help the owner of Fort Stamford, Ray Larson, by running tournaments, the shop and the junior section at the Fort but this was difficult given the distance involved. The heydays of the sport had passed along with the drink culture of that era. The financial viability of the club was grime.

At the sprightly age of only 26, following discussions with Ray about the Forts future, Royston was not able to resist the chance of running the club himself and agreed to

lease the premises in an attempt to revive the sports fortunes.

“So, I gave up my suit and tie job and that was what happened.” Said Royston.

Royston was never a wealthy man so his visions for the club were always thwarted by a lack of money. So long as he kept squash running, that gave him the sense of achievement he longed for. With his first loan from the bank he fixed the showers, court floors and reconfigured the bar area.

More and more people came back to play squash after these changes and sure enough the club grew.

Royston said, “It was a difficult concept, losing courts to save courts but that’s what I had to do!’

With Royston’s second loan from the bank he transformed a few of the courts into a typical 1990’s style gym which gave him the money to keep the remaining courts open.

In 2008, not knowing the banks were on the verge of collapse, Royston embarked on a huge building project only to find the bank renege on their funding agreement.

It knocked him off his feet. Royston was at the lowest point in his life where he almost lost everything. Every bank in Plymouth turned his request or monies down. Out of the blue, a ‘chap’ from Barclays in Newton Abbot phoned him up one day. In this fluke of luck, the ‘chap, Steve Reynolds, from Barclays also happened to be the treasurer of Newton Abbot Squash club and had admired Royston’s running of the Fort over the years since he left his

Owner Royston Sumner club. After a long day going through the project he bought into Royston and not just the business, authorised the loans and effectively saved the health club from financial ruin.

With new funding, he refurbished the health club, added a jacuzzi, sauna, toning salon, and extended the pool to make it what it is today. With the investment, members came flooding in, he paid the final payment back to the bank in October 2019. Just the mortgage to go, or so he thought. Royston’s debt was not over yet for then came Coronavirus, the biggest pandemic of our lives and has forced Royston to invest further, this time in safety measures.

Approximately £25,000 in fact! Royston and his team are eternally grateful for the support that the members have given during this time, this gradual flow of income enabled Fort Stamford to survive, pay the bills and to put in place the measures that members would have wanted to ensure it was a safe place to return.

“I want to emphasise that the measures in place at the Fort ensure that this gym at least, was not an environment that most gyms are perceived to be” said Royston.

Fort Stamford has taken some extraordinary precautionary measures above and beyond any gym we’re aware of in Plymouth. They are using products produced by TECcare called Ultra, Control and Daily to treat all surfaces.

The product is applied with a spray gun which statically charges the product so that it completely envelopes the objects being treated, even the most complicated parts of gym equipment. This spray has been applied to every single bit of equipment, flooring, toilets, and all touch points and handles. This will continue to kill germs for up to 3-4 weeks. As an added precaution, they re-apply the product every 2-3 weeks for members safety.

When you enter the club, your temperature is checked with a thermal imaging camera to ensure you don’t have a fever. There are disinfectant bottles located in all areas of the club available for you to wipe down any equipment you have just used. This spray provided, unlike most, won’t remove the Ultra spray from the equipment. There are plenty of hand sanitising stations dotted throughout for your personal use

Fort Stamford wants everybody to feel welcome, the young and the old.

This diversity gives a great sense of community. The staff really do care about you and your health. Their membership includes the use of all the facilities but if you want to change your lifestyle, you need to exercise on a regular basis. It’s not just a question of what you do but how often you do it. When there are lots of things to do, it makes exercising regularly easier! Membership includes the use of the courts, the gym, classes, toning salon, pool and spa.

Royston said, “We haven’t put prices up at Fort Stamford for 30 years to existing members. It’s a loyalty thing, if you’ve supported us then we’ll support you.”

“With most other gym’s you have to pay for advice for this and advise for that. At the Fort it’s all included in your monthly price, no add-ons and of course, we offer so many more facilities” said Royston.

Members can book via reception or online using a convenient App. Non-members book direct with the club. If you are not technically minded, you can just turn up at reception, however you run the risk of the activity being fully booked.

Fort Stamford have also invested in a new sophisticated air ventilation system which kills all harmful germs in the air. This works by using ultraviolet light which kills the germs instantly and then re-disburses it as disinfected air.

Walking around Fort Stamford, it is clear that they have taken all of the precautionary measures and more to be able to reassure the concerned or elderly members that this is a very safe gym and club to be in.

“They were expensive measures, but they were important measures that make a clear statement that this club is a very safe club to come back to’’ said Royston.

Being healthy and keeping active is one of the most important things you should be doing especially given the current coronavirus pandemic. “I’m hoping that before I retire, Racketball will become more popular ensuring the viability of the courts and therefore the future of squash, the very reason I took the club on 30 years ago” said Royston.

The little shop with a big impact on the local community: We interviewed Carole and Graham Stock, founders of blame LILY to find out more about this little gem located on The Broadway, Plymstock.

As soon as the Stock family opened their doors on the 7th September 2019, in popped a very excited customer who followed up with the words ‘This is exactly what the Broadway needs!’

And it has been the same ever since.

oth Graham and Carole have always been in the jewellery business and have been designing jewellery for 30 years. Graham has worked in the fashion and jewellery industries most of his working life.

settled, they both realised that something was missing - those independent boutique shops that you would typically find in places like Salcombe, St Ives and Marbella. They felt that it was their calling to bring a bit of glamour into Plymouth.

The two met in London and owned a retail shop when they were only in their twenties.

Carole concentrated on the design and the buying whereas Graham focused on the selling and the retail. A perfect team you could say!

Carole and Graham created their own jewellery brand 10 years ago because of their love for jewellery design and named it Lily & Lotty - Lily being their youngest daughter and Lotty being their middle daughter (their eldest daughter Chloe runs a successful yoga studio in Cornwall). This brand is still stocked in jewellers up and down the country and of course is available in blame LILY.

Graham also works as an independent consultant for various jewellery brands which means he travels to places such as China, Hong Kong, Canada and Thailand. He also works as a guest presenter on the QVC Shopping Channel.

The family moved down to Plymstock 15 years ago from London as they both always wanted to live by the sea. Once

One day on a visit to the Broadway, Carole decided to make an unplanned enquiry as to what the rent would be for a small shop. This seed then grew into a vision of both Carole and Graham owning a small Boutique shop in Plymouth, and both being quite ‘gungho’, they just said, ‘Let’s do it!’ Just 6 months after enquiring about the rent, the family opened blame LILY to the public.

The shop’s distinctive name is due to the couple’s youngest daughter Lily, a quirky, theatrical and fun-loving girl who helps out at the shop in between her studies as a fashion student in Plymouth.

Before opening, the couple worked tirelessly to make their shop look fabulous. The floors were hand-painted and stencilled by Graham and Carole and they sourced second hand and antique furniture which they updated or painted it themselves, adding unusual props and

The shop exterior is adorned by a gorgeous flower arch which changes at Christmas time with fairy lights and winter flowers. When walking into blame LILY, you can appreciate the love, care and attention to detail the family have put into the store. The stock is always beautifully displayed - ‘It might be like an Aladdin’s Cave but the products are always stylish and unique, and at reasonable prices.’

You really do experience all of the senses when walking around the boutique. The incense sticks are constantly on, they have a great music playlist and they sometimes pop open the prosecco on a Saturday afternoon!

Predominantly aimed at a female market, they sell clothing, a large selection of Sterling Silver and fashion jewellery, watches, gifts, handbags, accessories and homewares. Their products are constantly changing with the seasons and Carole works hard to source the right products at the right price.

The small team of 7 all share something special in common and it is the ability to make the customers happy. The retail staff like to go above and beyond to ensure their customers have a wonderful shopping experience and leave with a smile on their face. All purchases are beautifully wrapped in tissue paper, and then placed into a blame LILY branded bag, fully complimentary. They want their customers to feel special and well lookedafter.

Their Facebook page is worth following as they are always posting about new products or doing videos of fashion shows with their staff who love to model.

This is a great way to keep up to date with special offers and new stock arriving.

They are even thinking of planning their very own fashion show, here on the Broadway!

Carole mainly focuses on the buying and sourcing of products and Graham

primarily does the retail and selling with his skill of displaying products to attract customers. In 5 years time, they would love to move to a slightly larger shop on the Broadway to enable them to stock an even wider range of products. blame LILY has proved to us, and I’m sure it will to you, that they are no ordinary clothing and jewellery shop. They are a community of friendly, helpful and caring people who put the customer’s satisfaction above anything else. Their stock is like nothing else in Plymouth, it is affordable, unique and you really will find something different. Support your local business, come on in and have a browse.

DAY OF THE DEAD Learn all about the two-day celebration that is often overlooked as the ‘Mexican version of Halloween’.

U

sually mistaken for Halloween, Day of the Dead is a Mexican celebration held over two days; November 1st - November 2nd, the same days as All Saints Day and All Souls Day in Christianity. Although the symbolism of skulls relates well to Halloween, the two-day celebration is a time for remembering and celebrating the life of loved ones who have passed. However, many people do dress up in Day of the Dead costumes for Halloween. ‘Dia de la Muertos’ or otherwise known as, ‘Day of the Dead’, is traditionally full of colour, music, food and festivities.

The Day of the Dead originated from when the Spanish came to Mexico and with them, they introduced Catholicism.

The roots of the Day of the Dead go back around 3,000 years whereby preColumbian Mesoamerica honoured the

dead by performing rituals and the Aztecs saw death as an ever-present part of life. The Spanish would bring wine and ‘spirit bread’ to their loved one’s graves.

They then blended their beliefs and traditions to create their own customs.

They all considered that mourning the dead was considered disrespectful so therefore turned it into a yearly celebration. To this day, Mexican’s from all religions come together to celebrate the indigenous life.

In 2008, it was officially classed as a ‘National Holiday’ thanks to the dedication from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). They began to understand it as a means to face death and the deceased and not just a fancy-dress street party.

The festivities start on the night of October 31st and November 1st when families would gather at their deceased graves, place flowers and light candles to guide them back to Earth. On the 31st, it is the night where the children come back from the Land of the Dead and then on the night of November 1st, it’s the adults turn. The deceased are welcomed home to an altar of all their favourite things and photographs, and are treated like honoured guests. There are no tears or mourning allowed on these days, only celebrations, singing and laughter!

into the night. It is believed that on the November 1st and November 2nd, the passageway from the spirit world to the real world is opened, and therefore our deceased loved ones can return for a day full of celebration with their families.

To help bring their loved ones back from the dead, they would arrange a variety of ofrendas, meaning offerings around an altar to the dead such as; photographs, other personal belongings, candles, food and lots of flowers, traditionally marigolds. This is

the central piece to the ceremony which is typically built into private homes.

The symbolism of the skulls is far from grim. La Catrina is the iconic symbol of the Day of the Dead. La Catrina is a tall female skeleton wearing a fancy hat with feathers. This came from the satirical drawing to remind people to be themselves because no matter what you look like or the colour of your skin, we will all look like skeletons in the end. Many visitors purchase small statues dressed like skeletons with flowers and feathers on their hats and bring them home as souvenirs from Mexico.

Traditionally you would expect to paint your face like a skeleton and then they would decorate it with glitter, beads, flowers and have huge smiles. They would also wear fancy suits and dresses, occasionally with noise-making items to, so-say, keep the dead close during the fun. In towns and cities across Mexico, people would wear these costumes and makeup and hold parades and parties, and sing and dance!

They would spill out onto the streets bringing with them the joy and laughter.

Traditional Day of the Dead food is eaten at this celebration as well, such as el Pan de Muerto, meaning the Bread of the Dead. This is a sweet bread decorated with either a skull or crossbones. Families will usually bake one themselves for the occasion and most of the traditional

foods are homemade. Other food and drink are made such as marigold tortillas and marigold tequila. Marigolds are a traditional flower in the Day of the Dead as they are thought to guide the spirits back with their intense colour and smell. Marigolds are widely used in the celebration for example, to decorate altars, hats, clothing as well as in recipes.

Sugar skulls are also made and decorated similarly to the face paint and make-up applied to the face. They are pressed into skull-shaped moulds and then decorated with edible sugar paste, paint and beads and their loved one’s name. This is then taken to the grave on the last day of the holiday, November 2nd.

Decorations include papel picado, a traditional paper garland used to decorate homes and altars. Papel picado means ‘Punched’ or ‘perforated’ paper and is usually displayed in a range of bright colours and patterns.

The film’s that you may have seen feature Day of the Dead references include, the opening sequence of Spectre, the 2015 James Bond film. As well as the Disney Pixar movie, Coco, which heavily follows the traditions of the Day of the Dead.

Unfortunately, we are unable to visit Mexico at this current period, therefore, witnessing this wonderful celebration for yourselves will have to be on hold for another year or so. However, you can

still celebrate the Day of the Dead in the comfort of your own home with music, traditional food, costumes, makeup and lots of your family members! Lots of people dress up in Day of the Dead costumes on Halloween which is a great idea. However, it is always a good idea to understand the history of the celebration and the outfit before dressing up.

Celebrating the Day of the Dead authentically is a lovely way to bring the family back together after the unusual year we have had so far. Especially if you may have lost someone during the pandemic, adopting this celebration may be just what is needed. With laughter, dancing, singing, reminiscing on good memories and eating traditional Day of the Dead foods, this is a celebration of their life with no tears to dampen spirits.

Bengal Flavour is an exciting new restaurant which opened late last year and is the joint adventure of Moynul Hussain, Jalal Ali and Moshahid Ali owner of Shapla Balti Cuisine.

After previously eating at the award winning Shapla many times before, our expectations were high.

We were recommended to try the mixed platter as a starter as it consists of good range of flavours and different dishes. This included Onion Bhajee, Chicken Tikka, Mixed Kebabs

& Samosa on a bed of salad. Everything was beautifully presented and full of flavour in every bite.

Onto the mains: again we were guided by their recommendation after explaining the type of spice and foods we liked. This was reassuring and a nice touch so we received something enjoyable to our spice levels.

We had Tandoori Chicken which had a deep marinated warmth to it and complimentary herbs. Chicken Tikka Masala which was very pleasing to the eye and our taste buds in its rich red sauce, tender meat and aftertaste of almond. Biryanis is one of Bengals speciality; we had their Special Biryani which consisted of marinated chicken tikka, green chillies, fresh garlic, basmati rice, herbs, spices and served with a beaten egg on top. This was a first for us and it was delicious. Another first for us was a vegetable side dish called Tarka Dhall, this had a wonderful vibrant yellow colour and went well with our other dishes.

Halloween is looming so why not try some of our spooky recipes! We have also picked some of our favorite in-season recipes to warm you up in the colder months.

Moroccan baked eggs

(Serves 2)

½ tbsp olive oil, ½ onion, chopped, 1 garlic clove, sliced, ½ tsp ras-el-hanout, pinch ground cinnamon, ½ tsp ground coriander, 400g/14oz cherry tomatoes, chopped, 2 tbsp chopped coriander, 2 free-range eggs, salt and freshly ground black pepper ONE Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7.

TWO Heat the oil in a frying pan, add the onion and garlic and cook for 6-7 minutes, or until soft. Stir in the spices and cook, stirring, for a further minute.

THREE Add the tomatoes and season well with salt and pepper, then simmer gently for 8-10 minutes.

FOUR Scatter over 1 tablespoon of the coriander, then divide the tomato mixture between 2 individual ovenproof dishes.

Break an egg into each dish.

FIVE Bake for 8-10 minutes until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still slightly runny. Cook for a further 2-3 minutes if you prefer the eggs to be cooked through.

SIX Scatter over the remaining coriander and serve.

Pumpkin Soup ((Serves 6-8) 1 large onion, chopped, 2 carrots, peeled and chopped, 2 garlic cloves, 1 bay leaf, 25g/1oz unsalted butter, 2 tbsp olive oil, 1 medium pumpkin (prepared weight about, 850g/1lb 14oz) deseeded and roughly chopped, 1 mediumsized floury potato, such as Maris Piper, roughly chopped, 1 litre/1¾ pint vegetable or chicken stock, a little extra may be needed, 100ml/3½fl oz double cream, 3 tbsp pumpkin seeds, salt and freshly ground black pepper ONE Put the onion, carrots, garlic bay leaf, butter and half the olive oil into a large pan. Cook over a low–medium heat for about 10 minutes until the vegetables are tender but not coloured.

TWO Add the squash and potato, mix to combine and cook for a further 2–3 minutes. Pour in the stock, season well and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to a gentle simmer, half cover the pan with a lid and continue to cook for about 40 minutes until the squash is really tender when tested with the point of a knife.

THREE Pick out the bay leaf and blend the soup until smooth using a stick blender.

FOUR Add the cream and a little more stock if the soup is on the thick side, taste for seasoning, adding more salt and pepper as required.

FIVE Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and add the pumpkin seeds and fry quickly until the seeds start to pop. Remove from the pan.

SIX Ladle the soup into bowls and serve with a swirl of cream and the toasted pumpkin seeds.

Mulled cider

(Serves 4)

4 cardamom pods, lightly crushed, 1 clementine, sliced into wedges, spiked with 8 cloves, 1 lemon, sliced into wedges, spiked with 8 cloves, 100ml/4fl oz whisky 100ml/4fl oz orange liqueur, 3 tbsp clear honey, 1 litre/1 pint 15¼fl oz cider, 4 cinnamon stick, freshly grated nutmeg, to garnish METHOD Heat all of the ingredients in a large saucepan over a low heat until warmed through. Pour between 4 latte glasses or other heatproof glasses. Finish with a little freshly grated nutmeg.

Creamy mushroom pasta

(Serves 1)

25g/1oz unsalted butter (chopped), 1 tbsp olive oil, ½ onion (finely chopped), 1 garlic clove (finely chopped), 1 Portobello mushroom (chopped), 50ml/2fl oz white wine, 50ml/2fl oz double cream, 1 tsp chopped fresh parsley, 100g/3½oz pasta, cooked according to packet instructions, 25g/1oz pine nuts (optional), salt and freshly ground black pepper One Melt the butter with the olive oil in a frying pan and fry the onion and garlic until soft.

TWO Add the mushroom and cook until soft. Season well with salt and pepper.

THREE Add the white wine and cook until the volume of liquid has reduced by half.

FOUR Add the cream and simmer for 5 minutes, then add the parsley and check the seasoning again.

FIVE Toss the pasta through the sauce, then serve in a warm bowl and sprinkle over the pine nuts.

Spicy autumn squash stew

(Serves 4)

2 tbsp sunflower oil, 1 onion, finely chopped, 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped, 1 small red chilli, very finely, chopped (or dried red chilli flakes, to taste), 1 red pepper, cut into short strips, 6 spring onions, sliced diagonally, 1 tsp ground coriander, 1 medium butternut squash, peeled, deseeded, and rough cut into 2cm/1in pieces, 2 handfuls, cherry tomatoes, halved, 400ml tin coconut milk, ½ lemon, juice only, salt and freshly ground black pepper, small bunch coriander, leaves and stalks chopped separately ONE Heat the oil in a a heavy-bottomed saucepan, add the onion, garlic, chilli, red pepper and spring onions and cook gently for about 5 minutes until soft.

TWO Add the ground coriander and cook for a minute then add the squash, coriander stalks, and tomatoes. Cook this for a further 5 minutes.

THREE Add the coconut milk and simmer, partially covered, for 15 minutes or until the squash is tender.

FOUR Add the lemon juice, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste and sprinkle over the coriander leaves. Serve with white or brown basmati rice.

Pumpkin spiced latte

(Makes 2 drinks)

2 cups milk (dairy or non-dairy), 2 tablespoons pumpkin puree, or more to taste, see our homemade pumpkin puree recipe, 1 to 3 tablespoons sugar, depending on how sweet you like it, 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, plus more for serving, 1/2 cup strong hot coffee, Whipped cream, for serving One Add milk, pumpkin puree, and sugar to a saucepan over medium heat. Heat until hot, but do not boil. Remove the saucepan from the heat and whisk in the vanilla, pumpkin pie spice, and the coffee.

TWO Divide the mixture between two mugs. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.

Nutty Toffee Apples

(Makes 6) 6 Cox apples, 6 small wooden ice lolly sticks, 225g/8oz, granulated sugar, 110ml/4fl oz water, 30g/1oz butter, 2 tbsp golden syrup, 4 tbsp finely chopped mixed nuts One Push the wooden sticks halfway into the apples at the stalk end.

TWO Dissolve the sugar and water in a thick-bottomed pan over a gentle heat.

THREE Add the butter and syrup to the mixture and bring to the boil. Continue to boil, without stirring, until the toffee reaches 140C/275F (use a sugar thermometer to measure this).

FOUR Remove the pan from the heat and gently stir in the nuts.

FIVE Carefully dip each apple into the toffee, making sure each apple is well coated, and set aside to harden on a baking try lined with non-stick parchment

Pear ghost lollies

(Makes 4 ghosts) 100g white chocolate chips, 2 small, ripe Conference pears, 12 dark chocolate chips METHOD Melt 100g white chocolate chips in a bowl placed over a pan of barely simmering water, ensuring that the bowl doesn’t touch the water. Stir occasionally until smooth, then remove from the heat. Cut 2 small, ripe Conference pears in half and insert a wooden lolly stick into each base. Cover the pears with the melted white chocolate in an even layer, then set aside on a tray lined with baking paper. Decorate with dark chocolate chips to form the ghost eyes and mouth. Chill in the fridge until set. Serve and enjoy!

Plymouth’s ‘well-kept secret’. Established over 250 years ago, Woollcombe Yonge is one of the oldest law firms in the West Country. With fully qualified, specialist staff, they are also the only high street practice in Plymouth with a Criminal Law team. Complicated jargon is a thing of the past. Woollcombe Yonge is a forward-thinking, modern business, despite being around for so long. We interviewed Tracey Wright, the partner in charge of Woollcombe Yonge’s Private Client Team, to find out more about one of the oldest law firms in the South West.

I

n 2007, Woollcombe Yonge moved from their office on North Hill to their current location towards The Barbican on Bretonside. The business originated from two Oxford University law students who, on realising they were both from Devon, resolved to set up their own law firm on completion of their studies.

The firm was based in the South Hams where most clients were from the rural and agricultural sectors and they still act for a lot of these types of client today. The firm had been doing some criminal law work but it was not until the 1980s when John Haythorn and Sandy Morrison expanded the Criminal law team into what it is today.

Their assistant at the time was a young Tracey Baker who rose through the ranks and has been the managing partner of the firm for the last 14 years.

Tracey Wright specialises in Wills, Trusts and Probate, which is otherwise known as Private Client. Woollcombe Yonge opened their arms to Tracey 3 years ago, where she was very grateful for a change of pace and operating from one location. Before this, Tracey felt stretched working in two different offices either end of Cornwall and travelling from Devon.

‘I felt I was falling short as a mother, as a wife, as a daughter and as a friend. I needed to simplify my life’.

With 20 years of experience under her belt, Tracey made the move to Woollcombe Yonge. In addition to the work you might expect Tracey to do, she has a particular set of clients who lack the mental capacity to look after their finances, such as people who have suffered brain injuries, who have autism, other mental health issues and learning difficulties. At a young age, Tracey was inspired by the work her mother did as a Registered Mental Health Nurse, she then studied Psychology at A-Level and whilst studying at university worked as a nursing assistant in a number of psychiatric hospitals. She is now proud to have the ability to help vulnerable people within her job role.

Private Client partner: Tracey Wright of these departments has fully qualified and experienced staff available to deal with any kind of issue or query.

Will Giles is head of the Family Law team which deals with both Divorce and Children Proceedings. Will and Tracey had worked together for 16 years at a previous firm. Will is also trained as a Mediator for Family Mediation which is something the Courts now encourage when couples are looking to divorce.

Ian Veater joined the team in 2018 having worked with both Tracey and Will previously and hearing the great feedback. Ian is a partner and head of the Business Services team. He also specialises in dispute resolution and has a keen eye for a great deal.

The current pandemic has meant that their busiest sector at this moment in time is Residential Conveyancing headed up by Joe Cunningham, another who has risen through the ranks from trainee to partner. This is due to several changes, for example, the cut on stamp duty, a moratorium effectively on house sales, low-interest rates and a desire for many to move down to the South West for a healthier way of life, and because

working from home means that geography is no longer an issue.

particularly in the context of making a will; ‘Oh, well that was easy!’

Other changes from the pandemic have meant that there is a limited number of people working in the office at any one time. This has meant the team alternating between working from home and in the office. Unlike some law firms, Woollcombe Yonge is still offering face-to-face appointments and home visits, however, a phone call or video call is encouraged.

From the outside, Woollcombe Yonge could be seen to be ‘punching above their weight’ when it comes to the clients they work with. However, this is not the case, although they are a small team in a small office, they have qualified experts available to advise in each of their sectors. They are assisted by a small number of legal assistants to ensure that work can be done at the right level but they do no rely on an army of nonqualified staff with a ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ ethos. This and their considerable criminal law team are what sets them apart, and in some ways ahead of other larger law firms in the area.

Tracey believes that the most important quality to have as a solicitor is the ability to listen to clients. Often, clients do not know what is relevant. The skill comes in the lawyer being able put the client at ease and to ask the right question to get to the crux of the issue.

Tracey and all of the team at Woollcombe Yonge make sure that before anything else, the clients are relaxed and comfortable. They would like everyone to know that they are only human; they have whiny children, mortgages to pay off, and are worried about Covid-19 too so they are no different to anyone else. Tracey spoke in the interview about one of the best bits of feedback she regularly gets,

She hopes that when people realise how straightforward the process can be, they will be more likely to come back again when anything needs changing as it remains the case, even in the full flow of the pandemic, that 3 out of 4 people have not made a will. ‘Some of my favourite client appointments have happened virtually’ said Tracey.

To Tracey, she believes that there is no difference speaking to people via video call rather than face-to-face. She is still able to build up the same rapport with clients over a video call as well as the ability to still have a giggle where appropriate.

Woollcombe Yonge likes to give back to the community wherever they can. Their ‘Charity of the Year’ this year is Dame Hannah Rogers Trust but they sadly haven’t been able to do as much as they would have liked with them due to Covid-19. However, normally they would all take part in large fundraising events throughout the year such as the Mighty Hike, where they hiked for 26 miles along the South West Coast Path to raise money for MacMillan last year. Some team members did a fire walk and they even sponsored the Hugs from Henry Strictly ball which saw Tracey take on the role of head judge and Leonie Rowe, from the Residential Conveyancing team, participate as one of the dancers.

Although they are an old company, their ethos is far from dated. They work

from modern offices and embrace new technology to ensure that clients can still have access to good legal advice even during a pandemic.

Woollcombe Yonge has been running for 250 years, and the pandemic didn’t stop them. Working from home was their new normal as they carried on supporting their clients and doing what they do best.

The company have been through the Spanish Flu as well as two World Wars.

Even being bombed out of their office in the war did not stop them and they are not stopping now.

ortgage advising was never something Tricia imagined she would be interested in. 40 years ago; Tricia was on the lookout for a job involving sales. She came across a job advert for selling toys so she rang up the number on the advert, all though the number was actually for selling life insurance which was listed just below the toy sales advert, Tricia was not interested.

Around this time, Tricia had unfortunately broken a bone in her foot, this meant her foot was in a plaster cast and crutches were essential so finding a job and attending interviews was proving difficult.

An unexpected phone call from the life insurance company turned things around very suddenly after they offered her a free 3-week training course in Swindon to learn all about life insurance and why people should have it, this made sense to fill in time while the plaster was on so she accepted.

Tricia completed the 3 weeks of training and took home lots of insightful knowledge about the industry, not to mention far more interest. As soon as she came home, the plaster cast came off using her own handiwork, (Which Tricia does not advise) the crutches were out of the window and off she went with this newfound excitement of advising people on life insurance. This then kick started her 40-year career in what is now known as one of the most regulated industries to work in.

Tricia’s employees Oliver Tugwell and Charles Connaris work primarily for Assurance 4 Life, offering people the ability to have life cover, critical illness cover and income protection.

Tricia and her team also offer a will writing service at the cost of ÂŁ20, to anyone undertaking a review of their insurances.

Mortgages 4 Plymouth and Assurance 4 Life are a part of the largest mortgage protection network in the UK called Primis.

Primis is a product provider so they supply and negotiate with all the lenders and insurers to get the best rates for life assurance and mortgages. As well as advising life insurance, Mortgages 4 Plymouth help the community in other ways for example; by supporting St. Luke’s charity and also helping the Forces. The Forces tend to struggle with their busy timetable, working away frequently, therefore, Mortgages 4 Plymouth like to make themselves available to them almost 24 hours a day. Charles is currently undergoing training to become a protection advisor and with a degree in marketing from America, he is also going to be taking over the social media side of the business.

Tricia has won many awards over the years and some would say, she has more than accomplished an outstanding achievement record over her career. Top Advisor Quality 2018, Outstanding Contribution to the Network 2019 and Hall of Fame 2020 are only a few recent awards that she has taken home as 1st prize.

Tricia attended an awards evening back in February 2020 where she was nominated for The Marius Awards. It was simply a recognition event for everyone who had influenced the critical illness market. The ceremony was run by Scottish Widows, in memory of Dr Marius Bernard, who was a heart surgeon in South Africa and he and his brother Christian saw how the patients were suffering financially from illness.

Marius talked to the industry providers and the critical illness plans were developed.

Due to the current pandemic, the housing market is notably struggling with demand.

However, they have seen a higher rate of people looking to move house and have seen more purchases of houses from £300,000 plus. There has been an influx of demand for the South West especially because some city workers no longer
