FROM THE EDITOR

september is here, and with it comes the gentle turning of the seasons. The days grow softer, the evenings a touch cooler, and gardens take on the rich, mellow tones of early autumn. It’s a month of abundance—when late flowers mingle with ripening fruit, and the harvest offers its final, generous gifts before the year begins to slow.

In this edition, I’ve gathered ideas and inspiration to help you embrace september’s unique charm— whether you’re preserving the last of your summer crops, planting for next year, or simply enjoying a walk through crisp morning air. You’ll find recipes that celebrate the season’s bounty, as well as features that reflect the beauty of change and the pleasures of a slower rhythm.

I’m delighted with the collection we’ve brought together this month and hope it inspires you to savour these transitional days as much as I have in creating it.

As always, I welcome your thoughts, suggestions, and stories. drop me a line at editor@oracle. uk.net—I’ll do my best to reply to as many of you as possible.

ray’s stunning ‘statement’ kitchen from kF kitchens

Plymouth couple lesley and ray knew they wanted something special when they began their search for a new kitchen: “we’d just moved into our forever home” explained ray. “so we wanted a statement kitchen, something that’s quite unique.”

They’d tried a number of kitchen companies before visiting Nathan and derinda damarell at the KF Kitchens showroom at Faraday Mill: “we went there on the off chance, hadn’t made an appointment, but they were so friendly and personable,” said ray. “By the time we left, we knew they were the company for us. “On our first visit to the showroom, we were so impressed with the quality of the kitchen units and appliances. The kitchen is one of the most expensive purchases for the home, so we wanted to get it right. with Nathan and derinda, we trusted in their knowledge and had confidence in them to deliver the kitchen we wanted.”

The couple had spotted a stylish Nolte kitchen, which wasn’t quite the colour they wanted, but, said Lesley: “we had a look at the brochure and saw the kitchen in the newly introduced caramel colour and our minds were made up. It was the beginning of a journey that helped ensure we made the right choices.”

Entry to the former kitchen was from a door in the hallway which led across to another door leading to the dining room. On the right as you entered was a wall with units and worktop, while immediately to the left, right next to the door, was the oven. ray said: “we were open minded with regard to the design of the new kitchen but as soon as Nathan saw the layout, he saw the vision and how reconfiguring the rooms could create a better living space. Any other company would have come in and done like-forlike. He immediately suggested by removing the wall on the right and blocking the door to what was the dining room, it would be more open.”

Lesley said that changing the space was “the best thing we could have done”. she explained: “Nathan talked about creating a flow to this whole area, which is what the design has done brilliantly. we’ve now got a kitchen that leads into our dining room with views to the garden, where before, it was blocked by the wall. we would never have thought of extending the flooring throughout, which has created a nice flow. It’s like the finishing touch.”

The couple worked with Nathan and derinda on the precise design of the kitchen. The caramel bank of units takes pride of place on the far wall, while a peninsula with an venting induction Neff hob is positioned at the heart of the new, open space. To complement the caramel, the couple chose contemporary white cupboards and drawers and a beautiful worktop from local company, Mayflower Stone: “We wanted the worktop to be another statement piece, something to match the caramel,” said ray. “when we saw it, we thought it would be perfect.”

The quality integrated appliances are all by Neff: single slide and hide oven, microwave combi, warming drawer, induction venting hob with, washing machine, dishwasher and fridge freezer. They also chose an instant boiling water Quooker tap. The kitchen includes a carousel corner where the coffee-making items can be stored away tidily but right next to the coffee machine, and a big larder next to the oven: “KF Kitchens are very good at space utilisation,” said Lesley. “And it’s efficient. Everything is where it should be.” KF Kitchens project managed the entire build, with their highly skilled team of builders, kitchen installers, plumbers, electricians, decorators and Karndean flooring specialist: “They even have people who come and clear the rubbish,” said ray. “They’re just a fantastic team of people. They’re all at the top of their game, they work seamlessly together, and they’re polite and personable.”

The project took six weeks, including the building work. with three people living in the house including Lesley’s elderly mother, KF Kitchens ran a cold water pipe into the garage and plumbed in their old washing machine: “Nothing was too much trouble,” said Lesley. “And they’re meticulous, even to the extent of having an appointment to discuss

handles. It’s those little things, the attention to detail, that really impressed us. Nathan and derinda are both very experienced and you can see how passionate they are about what they do. They take pride in their work.”

The couple were surprised they only had to put down a £500 deposit. ray said: “we were never put under any pressure; we were able to take our time. And Nathan guides you to prioritise what you really want. They help you to make the right choices.” ray is already recommending KF Kitchens to friends and he said: “we’re just so impressed with the whole thing – the kitchen, the experience, the customer service, the products, the workmen, everything.” Lesley said the kitchen is now “the focal point” of their home: “we absolutely love the kitchen and how it has utilised our living areas.

“our three words for it would be stylish, contemporary, usable.”

Empowering Your Financial Future with Smart Saving Tips

Empowering Your Financial Future with Smart Saving Tips UK Savers Week 22nd -28th September

Take Charge of your Finances: why uk savers week matters more than ever

As the cost of living rises and financial pressures mount, saving money has never been more important. that’s where uk savers week comes in—a national campaign aimed at helping individuals take control of their finances, build stronger financial habits, and work toward a more secure future. whether you’re starting from scratch or finetuning your approach, this is the ideal time to focus on your financial wellbeing.

why uk savers week is important

uk savers week is more than just a reminder to set money aside—it’s about creating a culture of financial awareness and responsibility. with everyday expenses climbing, many people struggle to save consistently. But saving—even in small amounts—is key to building stability, managing life’s curveballs, and planning for retirement.

this initiative encourages everyone,

regardless of their current financial position, to take simple, practical steps toward a healthier financial future.

smart saving starts here

saving doesn’t have to be complicated. with a few effective strategies, you can make steady progress toward your goals. here’s how to get started:

1. set Clear FinanCial goals

why it matters: goals give your saving efforts purpose. whether it’s a holiday, home deposit, or retirement, knowing what you’re working toward keeps you motivated.

How to Begin: Define short-term (e.g., a weekend trip), medium-term (e.g., a new car), and long-term (e.g., retirement fund) goals. set realistic targets and timelines for each so you can break big ambitions into achievable steps.

2. Build and stiCk to a Budget

why it works: Budgeting helps you understand your spending, manage outflows, and spot opportunities to save.

how to do it: list your monthly income and all expenses—necessities and extras alike. use budgeting apps or spreadsheets to categorize and track your spending. you’ll quickly see where you can make adjustments.

3. automate your savings

why it’s powerful: automation makes saving effortless and consistent—no need to rely on will power alone.

how to set it up: arrange a standing order to transfer a fixed amount into your savings account on payday. treat it like any other bill, and watch your balance grow.

4. Choose the right savings aCCount

why it matters: the right account can make a big difference in how fast your savings grow.

what to Consider: Compare options like easy-access accounts, fixed-rate bonds, and isas (individual savings accounts). isas are particularly attractive in the UK due to their tax-free interest.

5. Cut unneCessary spending

why it helps: small, unnoticed expenses can quickly add up and drain your budget.

where to look: review your monthly subscriptions, dining habits, and impulse purchases. Cancel services you don’t use, cook more meals at home, and look for discounts when shopping. even minor changes can free up funds for saving.

6. harness the power oF Compound interest

why it’s essential: Compound interest helps your savings grow faster over time.

how it works: as your savings earn interest, that interest is added to your balance, so future interest is earned on a bigger amount. the earlier you start, the greater the long-term impact.

7. review your plan regularly

why you should: life changes—and so should your savings plan.

how to stay on track: revisit your budget and goals every few months. if your income changes or you have new financial priorities, adjust your strategy to reflect those shifts.

RECYCLE WEEK 2025

22nd - 28th September

‘It’s the one week of the year where retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media come together to achieve one goal: to galvanise the public into recycling more of the right things, more often’ – www.wrap.org.uk

This year’s theme: Step it up this Recycle Week.

Recycling has always been a powerful way to protect the planet—but now more than ever, it’s time to take it to the next level. This Recycle Week, let’s not just recycle—let’s recycle right.

We’ve come a long way in encouraging people to recycle. But now, the focus needs to shift towards doing it properly. It’s not just about tossing items into the bin; it’s about knowing which bin, and why it matters.

Why We Recycle

Recycling helps reduce the need to extract new materials from the Earth, protecting natural habitats, conserving resources, and cutting down on pollution. Every item we recycle means fewer forests cut down,

less harm to wildlife, and less air, soil, and water pollution.

Our planet has limited resources, so it’s vital to reuse what we already have instead of relying on untouched raw materials. Even though recycling still requires energy, it uses far less than creating new products from scratch. For instance:

Recycled aluminium uses 95% less energy

Recycled paper uses 40% less energy

That’s a massive win for both the planet and our energy consumption.

It’s More Than Just Plastics

Cardboard, plastic, aluminium… sure, but

garden waste and food waste are also recyclable—and just as important!

Garden Waste: Plymouth residents can order a black garden waste bin from plymouth.gov.uk, delivered to your home. Note: collection schedules may vary depending on bin type.

Food Waste: While Plymouth doesn’t currently offer food waste bins, you can still compost at home. Through a partnership with getcomposting.com, Plymouth households can purchase compost bins made from 100% recycled plastic for as little as £22.50.

What’s

Compost Good For?

After 6 months to 2 years, compost matures into a dark, crumbly soil perfect for growing flowers, vegetables, and even nourishing your lawn.

What Not to Recycle

Sometimes, good intentions can lead to recycling the wrong things— contaminating whole batches of recycling.

According to ecoscraps.com, these items should never go in your recycling bin: Loose Plastic Bags

Shopping bags

Plastic film or wrap

M

WHERE QUALITY MEETS TRUST.

Polystyrene (Styrofoam)

Egg cartons

Takeout containers

Disposable cups

Food-Soiled Items

Greasy pizza boxes

Used napkins

Oily containers

Other Non-Recyclables

Broken glass or sharp objects

Fast-food wrappers

Plastic cutlery

Thermal receipts (shiny or coated)

Tip: If it’s dirty, it’s not worthy! Always rinse before recycling. A clean item has a much better chance of being fully recycled into high-quality material.

Beware of Greenwashing

Many products claim to be “compostable” or “biodegradable,” but those labels can be misleading.

Certain Criteria Apply

Biodegradable simply means it will break down—eventually. But the process may release microplastics or harmful chemicals.

Compostable means the item breaks down into nutrient-rich compost—but only under the right conditions. Most “compostable” takeaway cups don’t break down well in home compost bins.

Solution? Use a reusable coffee cup instead of replacing one disposable item with another.

Devon’s Progress—And Your Part In It

The good news? No household waste in Devon goes to landfill. But we still need to do better by:

Sorting our recycling correctly

Reducing single-use products

Buying reusable and recyclable goods

Let’s make this Recycle Week the one where we all commit to recycling smarter, not just more

Transform Your Home with a Bright New Conservatory

discover how a stylish conservatory adds space, light, and value — just in time for summer living.

Bring the outside in: why now is the perfect time to invest in a Conservatory

as the summer sun settles warmly over the landscape and gardens are in full bloom, many homeowners begin to reevaluate how they use and enjoy their living spaces. For those over the age of 35 — perhaps with grown-up children, a growing desire for calm, or simply more time spent at home — the appeal of extending your home in a meaningful, lifestyle-enhancing way has never been more timely. and when it comes to combining function, beauty, and longterm value, few additions offer more than a conservatory.

a conservatory, in its simplest form, is a room made primarily of glass that acts as a natural bridge between your home and your garden. But more than that, it’s a space that offers light, warmth, peace, and versatility. whether you’re sipping your morning coffee surrounded by greenery or unwinding with a book as the sun sets, the experience of being enclosed in natural light while sheltered from the elements is one that no other room quite replicates.

why summer is the ideal time to start

July to september in particular — is the best time to consider conservatory installation. the weather is generally more stable, making construction quicker and less prone to weather delays. It also means that, once fitted, you’ll still have plenty of daylight left to begin enjoying your new space before the shorter, colder days set in.

moreover, summer allows you to truly experience the potential of a conservatory. picture your garden in full colour, butterflies drifting past the glass, the soft hum of bees in the background, and the scent of blooming flowers wafting through open doors. this is the season when a conservatory proves itself not just as an extension of your house, but as a celebration of the outdoors — without the inconveniences of wind, pollen, unpredictable showers, or pesky insects disrupting your peace.

Low-MAIntenAnce luxury

unlike full extensions, conservatories are generally easier to build, require less planning permission, and are typically more affordable. depending on the size and style, many conservatories can be completed in just a few weeks. numerous studies have shown that natural light can significantly improve mood, productivity, and sleep quality. in fact, spending time in bright, open environments has even been linked to reduced symptoms of anxiety and seasonal affective disorder (sad).

Final thoughts: a spaCe that grows with you

at its heart, a conservatory is more than just another room — it’s a change in lifestyle. For those over 35, who value light, calm, nature, and flexibility, this is a home upgrade that continues to reward long after the last pane of glass is installed.

RETHiNk, REFRESH, RENovaTE YouR kiTCHEN

itchens are the heart of the home, but when your space starts feeling outdated, it can affect more than just your cooking mood—it can make the entire home feel worn out. the good news? renovating your kitchen doesn’t have to mean gutting it and starting from scratch. in fact, one of the most impactful ways to modernize your space is also the most overlooked: repainting and refinishing your cabinets.

instead of replacing your cabinetry—a costly and time-consuming process— you can refresh the existing layout by having it professionally sprayed. this technique gives your cabinets a factoryfinish look at a fraction of the price of full replacement. whether you’re aiming for a sleek modern vibe or a cozy farmhouse charm, color and finish choice can completely transform the atmosphere of your kitchen.

the power oF paint: a smart transFormation

cabinet spraying has become a go-to solution for homeowners looking to elevate their kitchen without breaking the bank. unlike brush painting, which can leave visible strokes and an uneven finish, spray techniques deliver a flawless surface that rivals brand-new units. And with the rise of ultra-durable, scratch-resistant coatings, today’s paint jobs are not only beautiful— they’re built to last.

want to brighten a dark kitchen? Choose light, airy neutrals like soft greys, warm whites, or pastel greens. Craving something bold? navy blue, deep forest green, or matte black cabinets are trending and can add drama and sophistication. pair with updated hardware—think brushed brass or matte black handles—and suddenly your kitchen has a fresh, designer look without the designer price tag.

more than Just CaBinets: Full visual upgrade

while cabinetry plays a major role in a kitchen’s appearance, don’t overlook other easy upgrades that can work in harmony with a cabinet refresh. Changing backsplash tiles, upgrading lighting, or even swapping out countertops can elevate the entire room. renovation isn’t always about tearing everything out—it’s about making thoughtful choices that give you the most bang for your buck.

painting walls to coordinate with your new cabinet color, adding undercabinet lighting, or refinishing a tired floor can create a cohesive and polished result. even small touches like new bar stools, open shelving, or modern faucet fixtures can transform the space.

cost-effectIve, tIMesAvIng, eco-frIenDLy

renovating doesn’t have to mean weeks without a functioning kitchen or thousands spent on new materials. spraying your existing units typically takes a few days, depending on the size of your kitchen, and there’s little disruption to your daily life. more importantly, by keeping your original cabinets, you’re saving perfectly good materials from ending up in a landfill—making this a greener choice too.

your kitChen, your style—reimagined

A kitchen renovation should reflect your taste, lifestyle, and budget. whether you’re preparing for resale or planning to enjoy your space for years to come, cabinet spraying and smart design upgrades offer an ideal balance of beauty, value, and functionality.

renovating isn’t always about starting over. sometimes, the most stunning transformations come from working with what you already have—and seeing it in a brand new light.

National Fitness Day 2025 – Your Health is for Life

why movement, inclusion, and long-term

wellbeing matter

more than ever this september

24th

National Fitness day takes place this year on wednesday, september 24th, with the inspiring theme “your health is for life.” organised by active together, the day encourages people of all ages and abilities to embrace physical activity. it’s more than just a fitness campaign—it’s a reminder that staying active is one of the most powerful ways to improve our quality of life, both now and in the future.

as summer winds down and routines resume, there’s no better time to refocus on health and wellbeing. national Fitness day offers the perfect reminder that movement matters—not just for our bodies, but for our minds and communities too. this annual event brings the uk together in celebration of being active.

Small Steps, Big Benefits

you don’t need to be an athlete to take part. Just 30 minutes of moderate movement each day—walking, dancing, stretching, or cycling—can make a huge difference. regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke,

diabetes, and even some cancers. mentally, it can lift your mood, reduce anxiety, and improve focus and energy levels. the message is simple: every movement matters, and it all adds up over time.

Fitness That includes Everyone

one of the most important aspects of national Fitness day is its inclusivity. it’s not about gym memberships or perfect routines—it’s about finding ways for everyone to enjoy being active. Community centres, gyms, schools, and local parks will be hosting free events and activities to help people explore different forms of movement.

from high-energy Zumba to gentle chair yoga, there’s something for everyone. and by breaking down the barriers to entry—cost, confidence, or ability—the day invites everyone to get involved and discover what fitness can look like for them.

Workplaces and Schools Join the Movement

national Fitness day also encourages group participation in workplaces and schools. many employers now understand that promoting physical activity leads to a healthier, more motivated workforce. some will host lunchtime fitness breaks or walking meetings to mark the day.

in schools, students will join in with games, outdoor activities, and fitness challenges. It’s a fun, early introduction to the lifelong benefits of staying active—and a chance to connect with others through movement.

a lifelong Commitment to wellbeing this year’s theme, “your health is for life,” goes beyond a single day of action. it’s a call to think long-term. fitness isn’t just for losing weight or training for an event—it’s about building habits that support a healthy, independent, and fulfilling life.

so whether you’re stretching at your desk, walking with a friend, or trying a new workout class, let september 20th be the start of something lasting. Celebrate your body, honour your health, and take that first step— because your health truly is for life.

Nourishment for the Mind, Not Just the Body

In a world that increasingly urges us to cook at home, meal-prep religiously, and optimise every calorie, the simple act of dining out can sometimes be painted as a luxury—or worse, a guilty indulgence. But in truth, eating out offers benefits that extend well beyond the plate. It’s not only a chance to enjoy good food; it’s an experience that nourishes mental health, fosters community, and reminds us of the deep human connection between meals and meaning.

a social lifeline in a Busy world

Modern life can be isolating. Many of us spend long hours in front of screens, working remotely, or communicating via messages instead of face-to-face. Eating out changes that dynamic. whether it’s a café breakfast with a friend, a family sunday lunch, or a spontaneous dinner after work, shared meals are a cornerstone of social connection.

Psychologists have long documented the positive effects of social eating: lower stress, improved mood, and even enhanced problem-solving abilities. sitting across from someone in a relaxed setting fosters genuine conversation. It gives us permission to slow down, listen, and engage—something that often gets lost in the rush of daily routines.

A welcome Break from routine Cooking at home can be rewarding, but it also comes with a mental load: deciding what to make, shopping for ingredients, prepping, cooking, and cleaning up. dining out offers a reprieve from all of it. That small act of letting someone else take care of the work can

lift a surprising amount of stress from the mind.

It’s not just about avoiding chores— it’s about creating space for the unexpected. New surroundings, ambient music, or even the quiet hum of a bustling restaurant can help us step out of the mental loop of “work–home–repeat.” This shift in environment can refresh our perspective, inspire creativity, and re-energise us for the week ahead.

A Feast for the senses

when we eat out, the experience engages more than just our taste buds. The visual presentation of a dish, the aroma drifting from the kitchen, the sound of cutlery and conversation—all of it forms a sensory tapestry that’s hard to recreate at home.

Trying new flavours or cuisines stimulates curiosity. It can spark conversations about culture, travel, and shared experiences. Food becomes not only sustenance but also a form of exploration—a reminder that there’s always something new to discover, even in our own city.

Mindfulness in an Age of distraction we live in a culture of multitasking, where meals are often eaten in front of a computer, phone in hand. Eating out encourages us to pause and be present. The structure of a restaurant meal—ordering, waiting, receiving— creates natural pauses that invite anticipation and appreciation.

This slower pace allows for mindful eating: noticing textures, flavours, and the company we’re with. studies show that mindful eating can improve digestion, increase satisfaction, and reduce overeating. It turns the act of eating from a necessity into a joy.

supporting Local Communities

On a broader scale, dining out supports local economies. Independent restaurants are often woven into the social fabric of a community—they employ local staff, source from regional producers, and provide spaces for people to gather. By eating out, we’re not just feeding ourselves; we’re helping sustain the vibrancy and diversity of our towns and cities.

The Bigger Picture

Eating out isn’t a substitute for home cooking, nor should it be an everyday expense for everyone. But when approached mindfully, it can be a powerful tool for mental wellbeing. It’s about more than convenience—it’s about connection, sensory pleasure, and giving ourselves permission to enjoy the moment.

In a time when stress, isolation, and digital overload are on the rise, perhaps we shouldn’t see dining out as a luxury at all, but as a small yet meaningful investment in our mental health. After all, a good meal can fill the stomach— but a shared meal can fill the soul.

t his Autumn, w elsh singersongwriter and rising star l aura e vans returns with her anticipated second album, “ o ut of the d ark” – out o ctober 17th.

Honest, soulful and sonically bold, Out of the dark marks a powerful new chapter for an artist steadily carving out a unique space in UK music after huge support from BBC radio 2. Known for her rich vocals and emotionally grounded songwriting, Laura brings together lush pop melodies, bluesy undertones, and heartfelt lyrics on this 12-track collection, a body of work that feels both timeless and current. Produced and co-written with Ian Barter (Paloma Faith, Amy winehouse, dermot Kennedy), Out of the dark is a confident step forward that captures Laura’s evolution as both an artist and a storyteller. “I poured my heart and soul into this album,” Laura shares.

Opening with “wherever You Are,” a track that’s already earned consistent BBC radio 2 airplay and featured on editorial playlists across spotify, Apple Music, and deezer, the record immediately sets its tone: emotionally resonant, polished, and powerfully performed. Another former single, “what I’m Made Of” continues the momentum; it also secured a coveted spot on the BBC radio 2 daytime playlist earlier this year. The most recent release “Honest,” a bittersweet break-up anthem praised for its soaring chorus and raw vulnerability, was championed by BBC radio 2 (New to 2), A-listed on BBC Radio Wales, and picked up by BBC Radio London, affirming Laura’s continued connection with listeners and tastemakers alike.

The album doesn’t shy away from bolder textures either. Tracks like the anthemic “superman” and retroinfused “ATM,” with its swampy guitars and distorted vocals, explore a blues rock aesthetic that feels both classic and fresh. “Heartbreaker” offers rhythmic drive that’s hard to shake, while “Always & Forever,” written and performed by Laura for her own wedding, delivers sentimental charm wrapped in a timeless pop sensibility. These songs lend the record its dynamic warmth, showcasing Laura’s skill in crafting music that’s as danceable as it is emotionally grounded.

Other standouts include ballads like “Nobody Loves Me Like You,” “Just A Little Bit More,” and “I’ll Be The One” – which strip things back to reveal a tender core; soulful and introspective it’s these quieter moments that not only showcase Laura’s songwriting ability but also allow her vocals to take centre stage and to soar. Closing the album is the emotionally charged “Hear Me Out,” a southern rockinspired jam that feels equal parts catharsis and promise. As Laura sings “There’s no going back… I’ll keep on moving… making up for lost time,” the sentiment not only anchors the album but hints at the bold creative path ahead.

Following her 2022 breakout album “state of Mind,” which amassed over 3 million streams and praise from BBC radio 2’s Cerys Matthews (“a real firecracker”), “Out of the Dark” cements Laura’s reputation as one of the UK’s most compelling emerging voices. Having just wrapped a special guest slot on robben Ford’s UK tour, Laura continues to shine with a growing fanbase, near 3 million spotify streams, and an unmistakable sound she is making her own. with Out of the dark, she offers a collection that’s deeply personal, full of heart, and built to connect. To celebrate the release, Laura will hit the road on her biggest UK headline tour to date this November, bringing her full band and captivating live energy to intimate venues across the country.
