It’s a month of abundance—when late flowers mingle with ripening fruit, and the harvest offers its final, generous gifts before the year begins to slow.

In this edition, I’ve gathered ideas and inspiration to help you embrace September’s unique charm—whether you’re preserving the last of your summer crops, planting for next year, or simply enjoying a walk through crisp morning air. You’ll find recipes that celebrate the season’s bounty, as well as features that reflect the beauty of change and the pleasures of a slower rhythm.

I’m delighted with the collection we’ve brought together this month and hope it inspires you to savour these transitional days as much as I have in creating it.

N National Fitness Day 2025 – Your Health Is for Life

ational Fitness Day takes place this year on Wednesday, September 24th, with the inspiring theme “Your Health is for Life.” Organised by Active Together, the day encourages people of all ages and abilities to embrace physical activity. It’s more than just a fitness campaign—it’s a reminder that staying active is one of the most powerful ways to improve our quality of life, both now and in the future.

As summer winds down and routines resume, there’s no better time to refocus on health and wellbeing. National Fitness Day offers the perfect reminder that movement matters—not just for our bodies, but for our minds and communities too. This annual event brings the UK together in celebration of being active.

Small Steps, Big Benefits

You don’t need to be an athlete to take part. Just 30 minutes of moderate movement each day—walking, dancing, stretching, or cycling— can make a huge difference. Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and even some cancers. Mentally, it can lift your mood, reduce anxiety, and improve focus and energy levels. The message is simple: every movement matters, and it all adds up over time.

Fitness That Includes Everyone

One of the most important aspects of National Fitness Day is its inclusivity. It’s not about gym memberships or perfect routines—it’s about finding ways for everyone to enjoy being active. Community centres, gyms, schools, and local parks will be hosting free events and activities to help people explore different forms of movement.

From high-energy Zumba to gentle chair yoga, there’s something for everyone. And by breaking down the barriers to entry—cost, confidence, or ability—the day invites everyone to get involved and discover what fitness can look like for them.

Workplaces and Schools Join the Movement

National Fitness Day also encourages group participation in workplaces and schools. Many employers now understand that promoting physical activity leads to a healthier, more motivated workforce. Some will host lunchtime fitness breaks or walking meetings to mark the day.

EMPOWERING YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Empowering Your Financial Future with Smart Saving Tips UK Savers Week 22nd -28th September

As the cost of living continues to rise and financial pressures become more prevalent, saving money has become more critical than ever. Enter UK Savers Week—a nationwide initiative designed to empower individuals to take control of their finances, build a secure future, and develop smart saving habits. This week is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of saving and offering practical tips to help you make the most of your money. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your financial strategy, UK Savers Week is the perfect time to focus on your financial well-being.

WHY UK SAVERS WEEK MATTERS

UK Savers Week is not just about putting money away; it’s about fostering a culture of financial responsibility and awareness. With the ever-increasing cost of living, many people find it challenging to save regularly. However, saving is essential for achieving financial stability, managing unexpected expenses, and securing a comfortable retirement. This initiative encourages everyone to take small steps towards a healthier financial future, no matter their current situation.

Saving money doesn’t have to be daunting. With a few practical strategies, you can make significant progress toward your financial goals. Here are some essential tips to get you started:

DEFINE YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS

The Importance: Having clear goals gives you a sense of direction and purpose. Whether it’s saving for a vacation, a home deposit, or your retirement, knowing what you’re working towards keeps you motivated.

How to Start: Identify your short-term (e.g., holiday fund), medium-term (e.g., buying a car), and longterm (e.g., retirement savings) goals. Assign a specific amount to each and set a realistic timeline. This way, you can break down large financial targets into manageable steps.

MASTER THE ART OF BUDGETING

Why It Works: A budget is the foundation of any effective saving strategy. It helps you track where your money is going, manage your expenses, and spot areas where you can cut back.

How to Budget: Begin by listing your monthly income and all expenses, from essentials like rent and groceries to discretionary spending on entertainment. Use budgeting tools or apps to help you categorize your spending and identify potential savings.

AUTOMATE YOUR SAVINGS

Why It’s Effective: Automation ensures that saving

becomes a priority, not something you do only if there’s money left over.

How to Do It: Set up a standing order to transfer a portion of your income into a savings account each payday. This “out of sight, out of mind” approach helps build your savings without the temptation to spend.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SAVINGS ACCOUNT

Maximizing Returns: Different savings accounts offer varying interest rates and benefits. Choosing the right one can significantly impact how much your savings grow over time.

What to Look For: Explore your options, including easy-access savings accounts, fixed-rate bonds, and Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs). ISAs are particularly advantageous in the UK as they allow you to earn interest tax-free, making them a smart choice for long-term savings.

TRIM UNNECESSARY EXPENSES

Cutting Back: Everyday expenses can add up quickly, and often, we pay for things we don’t really need.

How to Identify Savings: Review your monthly subscriptions, such as streaming services, magazines, or gym memberships. Cancel any that you don’t use regularly. Also, consider reducing takeout meals or shopping for deals on groceries—these small l changes can free up money to put into your savings.

UNDERSTAND THE POWER OF COMPOUND INTEREST

Long-Term Benefits: Compound interest can significantly grow your savings over time. The earlier you start, the more you benefit.

How It Works: When you earn interest on your savings, that interest is added to your balance, and you begin to earn interest on the new total. Over time, this compounding effect can turn small, regular deposits into a substantial sum.

REGULARLY REVIEW YOUR SAVINGS PLAN

Stay On Track: Your financial situation and goals may change over time. Regular reviews ensure that your savings plan remains relevant and effective.

How to Adjust: Set aside time every few months to evaluate your budget and savings strategy. If you’ve received a raise, encountered unexpected expenses, or changed your financial goals, adjust your savings plan accordingly.

MAKING THE MOST OF UK SAVERS WEEK

UK Savers Week is the perfect opportunity to reassess your financial habits and make positive changes. Throughout the week, take advantage of the resources available—workshops, webinars, and financial advice services are all designed to help you navigate the world of savings with confidence. Engaging with these tools can provide personalized insights and guidance, making it easier to develop a savings strategy that fits your unique circumstances.

SMALL STEPS, BIG IMPACT

Building a solid savings habit is one of the most empowering financial decisions you can make. By setting clear goals, creating a realistic budget, automating your savings, and regularly reviewing your progress, you can pave the way to financial security. UK Savers Week is a reminder that saving doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. With the right approach, you can take control of your financial future—one step at a time.

Transform Your Home with a Bright New Conservatory

Discover how a stylish conservatory adds space, light, and value — just in time for summer living.

Bring the Outside In: Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Invest in a Conservatory

As the summer sun settles warmly over the landscape and gardens are in full bloom, many homeowners begin to reevaluate how they use and enjoy their living spaces. For those over the age of 35 — perhaps with grown-up children, a growing desire for calm, or simply more time spent at home — the appeal of extending your home in a meaningful, lifestyle-enhancing way has never been more timely. And when it comes to combining function, beauty, and long-term value, few additions offer more than a conservatory.

A conservatory, in its simplest form, is a room made primarily of glass that acts as a natural bridge between your home and your garden. But more than that, it’s a space that offers light, warmth, peace, and versatility. Whether you’re sipping your morning coffee surrounded by greenery or unwinding with a book as the sun sets, the experience of being enclosed in natural light while sheltered from the elements is one that no other room quite replicates.

Why Summer is the Ideal Time to Start

July to September in particular — is the best time to consider conservatory installation. The weather is generally more stable, making construction quicker and less prone to weather delays. It also means that, once fitted, you’ll still have plenty of daylight left to begin enjoying your new space before the shorter, colder days set in.

Moreover, summer allows you to truly experience the potential of a conservatory. Picture your garden in full colour, butterflies drifting past the glass, the soft hum of bees in the background, and the scent of blooming flowers wafting through open doors. This is the season when a conservatory proves itself not just as an extension of your house, but as a celebration of the outdoors — without the inconveniences of wind, pollen, unpredictable showers, or pesky insects disrupting your peace.

RETHINK, REFRESH, RENOVATE YOUR KITCHEN

Breathe New Life Into Tired Cabinets

Kitchens are the heart of the home, but when your space starts feeling outdated, it can affect more than just your cooking mood—it can make the entire home feel worn out. The good news? Renovating your kitchen doesn’t have to mean gutting it and starting from scratch. In fact, one of the most impactful ways to modernize your space is also the most overlooked: repainting and refinishing your cabinets.

Instead of replacing your cabinetry—a costly and timeconsuming process—you can refresh the existing layout by having it professionally sprayed. This technique gives your cabinets a factory-finish look at a fraction of the price of full replacement. Whether you’re aiming for a sleek modern vibe or a cozy farmhouse charm, color and finish choice can completely transform the atmosphere of your kitchen.

THE POWER OF PAINT: A SMART TRANSFORMATION

Cabinet spraying has become a go-to solution for homeowners looking to elevate their kitchen without breaking the bank. Unlike brush painting, which can leave visible strokes and an uneven finish, spray techniques deliver a flawless surface that rivals brandnew units. And with the rise of ultra-durable, scratchresistant coatings, today’s paint jobs are not only beautiful—they’re built to last.

Want to brighten a dark kitchen? Choose light, airy neutrals like soft greys, warm whites, or pastel greens. Craving something bold? Navy blue, deep forest green, or matte black cabinets are trending and can add drama and sophistication. Pair with updated hardware—think brushed brass or matte black handles—and suddenly your kitchen has a fresh, designer look without the designer price tag.

Painting walls to coordinate with your new cabinet color, adding under-cabinet lighting, or refinishing a tired floor can create a cohesive and polished result. Even small touches like new bar stools, open shelving, or modern faucet fixtures can transform the space.

YOUR KITCHEN, YOUR STYLE— REIMAGINED

A kitchen renovation should reflect your taste, lifestyle, and budget. Whether you’re preparing for resale or planning to enjoy your space for years to come, cabinet spraying and smart design upgrades offer an ideal balance of beauty, value, and functionality.

Renovating isn’t always about starting over. Sometimes, the most stunning transformations come from working with what you already have—and seeing it in a brand new light.

Nourishment for the Mind, Not Just the Body

In a world that increasingly urges us to cook at home, meal-prep religiously, and optimise every calorie, the simple act of dining out can sometimes be painted as a luxury—or worse, a guilty indulgence. But in truth, eating out offers benefits that extend well beyond the plate. It’s not only a chance to enjoy good food; it’s an experience that nourishes mental health, fosters community, and reminds us of the deep human connection between meals and meaning.

A Social Lifeline in a Busy World

Modern life can be isolating. Many of us spend long hours in front of screens, working remotely, or communicating via messages instead of face-to-face. Eating out changes that dynamic. Whether it’s a café breakfast with a friend, a family Sunday lunch, or a spontaneous dinner after work, shared meals are a cornerstone of social connection.

Psychologists have long documented the positive effects of social eating: lower stress, improved mood, and even enhanced problem-solving abilities. Sitting across from someone in a relaxed setting fosters genuine conversation. It gives us permission to slow down, listen, and engage—something that often gets lost in the rush of daily routines.

A Feast for the Senses

When we eat out, the experience engages more than just our taste buds. The visual presentation of a dish, the aroma drifting from the kitchen, the sound of cutlery and conversation—all of it forms a sensory tapestry that’s hard to recreate at home.

Trying new flavours or cuisines stimulates curiosity. It can spark conversations about culture, travel, and shared experiences. Food becomes not only sustenance but also a form of exploration—a reminder that there’s always something new to discover, even in our own city.

Mindfulness in an Age of Distraction

We live in a culture of multitasking, where meals are often eaten in front of a computer, phone in hand. Eating out encourages us to pause and be present. The structure of a restaurant meal—ordering, waiting, receiving—creates natural pauses that invite anticipation and appreciation.

This slower pace allows for mindful eating: noticing textures, flavours, and the company we’re with. Studies show that mindful eating can improve digestion, increase satisfaction, and reduce overeating. It turns the act of eating from a necessity into a joy.

Supporting Local Communities

On a broader scale, dining out supports local economies. Independent restaurants are often woven into the social fabric of a community—they employ local staff, source from regional producers, and provide spaces for people to gather. By eating out, we’re not just feeding ourselves; we’re helping sustain the vibrancy and diversity of our towns and cities.

Healthy September Recipe’s

Healthy Swedish meatballs

STEP 1

Put 1 tbsp rapeseed oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the onion and fry for 10 mins or until soft and translucent. Add the garlic and cook for 1 min. Leave to cool.

STEP 2

Mix the cooled onions, pork mince, egg yolk, a good grating of nutmeg and the breadcrumbs in a bowl with your hands until well combined. Form into 12 balls and chill for 15 mins.

STEP 3

Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and fry the meatballs for 5 mins over a medium heat, turning often until golden. Pour over the stock and bubble for 8-10 mins or until it has reduced a little. Stir through the mustard and yogurt.

STEP 4

Steam the greens for 5 mins or until tender. Serve the meatballs with the greens and a dollop of the sauce.

INGREDIENTS:

2 tbsp rapeseed oil

1 onion (finely chopped)

1 small garlic clove (finely grated)

375g lean pork mince

1 medium egg yolk

grating of nutmeg

50g fine fresh breadcrumbs

300ml hot low-salt beef stock

½ tbsp Dijon mustard

2 tbsp fat-free natural yogurt

400g spring greens (shredded)

lingonberry or cranberry sauce (to serve)

Healthy tomato soup

METHOD:

Step 1

Heat the oil in a large pan and cook the onion for 8–10 minutes until soft and slightly golden. Add the carrots, garlic, peppers, and sweet potato. Cook for 10 more minutes, stirring often. Add the tomatoes, stock, herbs, and 1 litre of water. Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 20 minutes until the sweet potato is soft.

Step 2

Blend the soup until smooth using a hand blender. Stir in the cream and season to taste. Store in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

INGREDIENTS:

2 tbsp olive oil

2 onions chopped

2 carrots chopped

2 garlic cloves crushed

2 red peppers chopped

1 large sweet potato

peeled and chopped

2 x 400g cans tomatoes

1 low-salt veg or chicken stock cube

1 tsp dried oregano

3 rosemary sprigs

leaves picked and chopped

70ml double cream

Healthy pancakes

INGREDIENTS:

50g self-raising flour

50g wholemeal or wholegrain flour

2 small eggs

separated

150ml skimmed milk

berries and low-fat yogurt or fromage frais to serve

METHOD:

Step 1

Sift the flours into a bowl and add back any bits left in the sieve. Mix in the egg yolks and a little milk to make a thick paste. Gradually stir in the rest of the milk to avoid lumps. Whisk the egg whites until stiff, then gently fold them into the batter without losing too much air.

Step 2

Heat a non-stick pan on medium. Pour in enough batter to make a 10 cm pancake. Cook for about a minute until bubbles form and the edges look dry. Flip and cook the other side until done. Keep warm while you cook the rest. Serve with your favourite healthy toppings.
