no need to move house – just call kF kitchens!

When plymouth couple angie and Jamie mcsweeney started to discuss a ‘future-proof’ home where they could enjoy their retirement, they feared they might have to sell their family home of over 35 years.

“the downstairs was all disjointed with lots of small separate rooms, and the kitchen was cut off from the dining area by a bank of cupboards and a breakfast bar,” said angie. “there are 12 of us here when our sons and grandchildren visit and we couldn’t all fit in the same area. At one point, we considered moving to a bungalow. But this is our family home, we’ve lived here since 1988 and we love it, so we thought, ‘why don’t we try and future-proof here’? the problem was that we didn’t know how to do that, how to make all that space work better for us.”

the turning point came when they visited the Faraday mill showroom of local family firm KFKitchens: “They’d installed a kitchen for some friends of ours, who couldn’t speak highly enough of them.

We went down to the showroom, always with the intention of getting quotes from other companies as well, but we didn’t bother going anywhere else! We knew straight away we were in safe hands.”

After the first meeting with KF Kitchens’ owners Nathan and derinda damarell, nathan visited angie and jamie to discuss designs. and, straight away, he suggested a reconfiguration of the downstairs rooms to create the spaciousness and ‘flow’ they were looking for: “He immediately had a vision for how the spaces could be joined up and how we could have a kitchen that justifies the size of the house.”

nathan advised knocking down the wall and downstairs Wc at the far end to extend the kitchen by just over a metre by ‘grabbing’ space from the utility room. through also taking some space away from the adjoining garage, the changes still allowed room for everything the couple wanted in the utility, including a new Wc. For the kitchen itself, everything was ripped out to make way for a beautiful nolte kitchen in the brand’s stunning new caramel colour, matched with white doors and eye-catching Manganese Matrix Art light rail: “I fell in love with the caramel colour straight away,” said angie. “it’s timeless and it changes with the light.

“I also love the finish of the Nolte cupboards and drawers. They’re push and go so you don’t get fingerprint marks on them. it was jamie’s idea to have the light rail and it’s one of my favourite things about the kitchen!” angie wanted an island, but didn’t think it would be possible: “just adding that extra metre to the kitchen has made such a difference. We didn’t believe we could have such a big island and still have plenty of room to move about. kF kitchens are very good at utilising space and using space efficiently so that everything is close to hand.”

the island is where angie does her food preparation, and it places her right at the heart of things, which is what she wanted. Removing the old breakfast bar and cupboards has also made the space much brighter. the beautiful worktops are by Plymouth company Mayflower Stone, whose skilful work in cutting the quartz 20mm calacatta michelangelo slabs also enabled them to use the same worktops in the utility. all the integrated appliances are by Neff: dishwasher, washing machine, fridge freezer, coffee machine, induction venting hob, microwave, single oven with neffs patented slide and hide door, steam oven, and two warming drawers: “I didn’t realise how wonderful the warming drawers are,” said angie. “they’re perfect for serving a big roast dinner with everything still hot!” adding further quality and style are the Blanco quartz sinks, Quooker boiling water tap, and a concealed socket and usB unit on the island.

all the work has been done by the trusted professionals used by KF Kitchens: the building work, the kitchen, utility and Wc installation, the electrics, plumbing, plastering, decorating and flooring. To complete the sense of connectedness, kF kitchens also redecorated and refloored the room leading into the kitchen-dining area and arranged for a local company to install underfloor heating in that room.

“they worked so well together, it all just rolled,” said angie. “and nothing was too much trouble. i wanted my coffee machine and toaster to be stored out of sight, but handy to use every day.

The kitchen fitter, Kev, designed and fitted a shelf for the pantry cupboard which slides in and out. he also designed the media wall for the dining area. he’s a miracle worker.” angie says the couple went into kF kitchens looking for a new kitchen and have ended up with a whole new way of living: “It’s changed the way we live. We’ve got a complete living area now and i’m in here all day, which i wasn’t before.” they’d happily recommend kF kitchens to others: “We spent a lot of time with Nathan and Derinda, and we never felt rushed. they care about you, and they care about the end product. you felt they wanted the best for you as much as you wanted it for yourself.” and their top three words to describe their new kitchen? “spacious, connected and welcoming!”

From the hoe to your home: plymouth Fires up for national grilling month

There’s a special kind of buzz that sweeps through plymouth when the days grow longer and the sea breeze carries that first whiff of summer. it’s not just the promise of warmer weather that excites us—it’s the unmistakable scent of something sizzling on the grill. as national grilling month begins in June, the city comes alive with the sounds, smells, and social spirit that only a good barbecue can bring.

held throughout the month of june, national grilling month isn’t just about flipping burgers and turning sausages. it’s a month-long celebration of food, community, and the great outdoors— three things that plymouth does best. With our panoramic coastline, wide

open green spaces, and famously friendly neighbourhoods, it’s no wonder grilling feels like second nature down here.

From back gardens in peverell to picnic blankets at jennycliff, plymothians are known for making the most of summer’s fleeting sunshine. national grilling month offers the perfect excuse to gather, grill, and indulge in a little alfresco joy. more than just a culinary event, it’s a reminder of how good life can be when shared over smoky coals and sea views.

grilling, at its heart, is a ritual. there’s something satisfyingly primal about cooking over flame. It strips things

back to the basics: fire, flavour, and fellowship. it’s a chance to slow down, disconnect from screens, and connect with each other. and it’s wonderfully versatile. While the classic sausage and burger will always have a place on the barbecue, plymouth’s evolving tastes have seen the rise of everything from halloumi skewers and veggie burgers to grilled mackerel fresh from the sound.

one of the joys of celebrating grilling month in plymouth is access to outstanding local produce. our city is surrounded by rich farmland, thriving fisheries, and passionate small-scale producers. Whether you’re picking up organic veg from the plymouth market, fresh seafood from the Barbican, or quality cuts from a local butcher in mutley plain, grilling is a brilliant excuse to shop local and eat well.

the social side of grilling can’t be overstated. in a time where digital communication often replaces real interaction, the barbecue remains a powerful tool for bringing people together. there’s no hierarchy around a grill—just good food and better company. Whether it’s a spontaneous gathering with neighbours or a planned cookout with family, june becomes a month

of shared moments and simple pleasures.

and it’s not just happening in home gardens. Restaurants, pubs, and cafés around plymouth often embrace national grilling month with outdoor events and seasonal menus. you might find flame-cooked specials at the Royal William yard, pop-up BBQ stands at local festivals, or seafood grills being served fresh on the Barbican. From casual street food to upscale takes on open-fire cooking, the city’s food scene brings grilling to life in creative and delicious ways.

as more of us think about sustainability and the environment, grilling is also evolving. in plymouth—a city with such deep ties to the sea and countryside—many are choosing to grill more responsibly. that might mean using sustainable charcoal, opting for meat-free recipes a few nights a week, or making the most of locally sourced ingredients. every small step helps protect the beautiful natural spaces we’re lucky enough

to live among, from the south West coast path to dartmoor’s rolling moors.

of course, this is Britain—and no grilling month would be complete without a nod to the ever-unpredictable weather. But if there’s one thing plymouth knows, it’s how to adapt. We’ve all seen impromptu rain shelters made from parasols and old tarps, disposable barbecues crackling in car parks, and neighbours sharing tongs in classic community spirit. Rain or shine, we fire up and get stuck in. That’s just how we do it down here.

more than anything, national grilling month is about creating memories. it’s about kids chasing bubbles across the lawn while sausages sizzle, about golden-hour dinners with friends as the sun sets over the tamar, and about those quiet, perfect evenings when it’s just you, the grill, and the sea breeze. these are the moments that stay with us.

so as june rolls in, let’s embrace the

sizzle. let’s celebrate our incredible local produce, our close-knit communities, and our love for the outdoors.

Because in plymouth, grilling isn’t just about food—it’s about flavouring our lives with joy, connection, and a little seaside spirit. happy grilling month, plymouth. now pass the tongs.

PLASTIC FREE JULY

Become a part of the solution by refusing single-use plastics this July (and beyond!) Plastic Free July is a worldwide movement to encourage people to make the swaps from single-use plastic to reusable so we can have cleaner oceans, streets and a healthier planet.

The challenge is simple and available to everyone. All you need to do to be a part of the change is refuse single-use plastics and opt for sustainable alternatives. Once you apply to take part, Plastic Free July will offer ideas and resources to guide you in your challenge to better the planet.

The Plastic Free movement has currently inspired approximately 326 million within 177 countries!

The best part of this challenge is that by making these small changes every day for one month, they are more likely to become life-long habits.

Supermarkets are designed for your convenience and plastic happens to be one of the most convenient materials in the world. Plastic packaging is durable, long-lasting, cheap to produce, helps protect and preserve foods and is fairly light in weight which means transportation is faster. Although plastic has many positives that enrich our lives, our planet is suffering because of it. Durable and long-lasting means we will never see it decompose within our lifetime. If we are all using plastic

that cannot be recycled, you can begin to see how much plastic can build up over just one year.

In fact, in the UK alone, we collectively throw away 295 billion pieces of plastic every year and the majority of it is single-use meaning it cannot get recycled.

A lot of the plastic we throw away ends up in our oceans in a few different forms. Fishing materials are the biggest polluter of our oceans which was a topic widely talked about on the Netflix documentary ‘Seaspiracy’. Well worth the watch! The rest is made up of our personal plastic waste that we can all help to reduce. Not all plastics are visible, a lot of the ocean is made up of microplastics that are consumed by fish which are then consumed by us. It is very easy to think, ‘If it doesn’t affect me then I don’t need to worry about it.’ However, if you are a consumer of fish, you are digesting plastic yourself. Microplastics are usually a product of washing clothes in a washing machine. There are alternatives you can use to help stop microplastics from entering the ocean which I will also discuss.

How to live plasticfree

Reusable water bottles and coffee cups are becoming increasingly more popular and easier to find. Cafes and coffee shops all offer their own reusable alternatives that you can purchase instore instead of disposable paper cups. A lot of people mistake the paper cup for paper or cardboard however, disposable paper cups are lined with plastic to stop the drink from leaking. Try to resist the urge and wait until you can sit down at a café and order a drink in a durable mug or glass. If you think you may be tempted by a coffee in the day, pop your re-usable coffee cup in your bag just in case you might want to use it later on in the day.

Chilly’s bottles are not only beautifully designed with loads of different patterns and colours to choose from but they also keep your drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours! I have personally tested this out and left the bottle in a hot car all day and the water was just as cold as when it entered the bottle hours before.

In the UK, we are fortunate to have safe drinking water, straight from the tap. Many countries aren’t blessed with this privilege that we often take for granted. Bottled water

Always bring reusable bags. You never know when you might need a shopping bag if you’re out and about so it’s always best to keep one in your bag at all times. Shopping bags don’t have to take up much room in your bag or pocket. You can purchase collapsible shopping bags that compress into their own sack and can be the size of a small wallet or tennis ball. Very useful for popping out to grab a few things.

Being able to live plastic-free comes from being prepared. This is a good life lesson to learn because in day-to-day life when you are prepared, you are less likely to be late and make silly mistakes. Being prepared within the plastic-free world means making your lunch the night before or waking up early to make them in the morning. Put the contents of your packed lunch into a re-usable container then you won’t need to pop out for lunch and feel tempted by the convenient plastic packaging. If you have made something that needs to be wrapped up, avoid cling-film and opt for a sustainable alternative such as beeswax wraps.

Being prepared also comes down to your food shops and knowing what meals you want to have during the week. Make sure you check the use-by dates and cook the foods which have the earliest use-by dates first. Becoming plastic-free means you may have to shop around instead of grabbing everything in one supermarket.

Refill shops are your new supermarkets

Refill shops are brilliant for getting your dried foods such as; pasta, lentils, nuts, rice, grains, dried fruit, flour etc. Simply bring your re-usable containers and jars with you and weigh the produce as you go! In a lot of refill shops, they will often sell ecofriendly alternatives such as recycled or bamboo toilet rolls, soap and shampoo bars, metal straws, wooden dish scrubs and much more.

““Think about it. Why would you make something that you’re going to use for a few minutes out of a material that’s basically going to last forever, and you’re just going to throw it away. What’s up with that?”
- Jeb Berrier, Bag It movie

world youth skills day

“Young people are drivers of change and must be fully engaged in decisions affecting their future. Guided by the United Nations Youth 2030 strategy, I urge everyone to act for youth skills development as a priority, at the Summit and beyond.” - un secretary-general antónio guterres

Established in november 2014 by the united nations general assembly, world skills day is held annually on 15th July. the day seeks to promote skill expansion among the world’s youth and address challenges and seize opportunities. in recent studies, it shows that around 30% of young women and 13% of young men worldwide are not in employment, education or any form of training.

World youth skills day aims to highlight the importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, entrepreneurship, innovation and self-employment. providing necessary tools and resources to keep up with the ever-changing nature of jobs with the advances of technology. it opens up the conversation between young people, education and training institutions, employers and employees, firms and development partners.

as part of a 15-year plan, the united nations has committed to promoting education and lifelong learning opportunities, reducing unemployment and achieving the sustainable development goals. the sustainable development goals are part of the 2030 agenda which is made up of 17 goals to universally end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. education and training are fundamental to creating a peaceful and prosperous world.

We are extremely fortunate to live in a country where schooling is a luxury and we are given the opportunity to learn how to read and write and form basic skills to be a desirable and employable candidate. national book lovers day august 9th

this one is for all those bibliophiles out there (a person who has a great appreciation for or collects books). Find your favourite nook, stick the kettle on and sit back and lose yourself in a good book.

Name a better feeling than wandering into a bookshop and being immediately struck with a sense of excitement. absorbing the hundreds of books that line the walls filled with beautiful words conjured up by masterful storytellers or digesting years’ worth of research which has been lovingly put together to deepen and expand our minds.

Books are always an unsung hero, especially in this digital age where we are so easily drawn into the convenience of tV. of course, they have their place and are enjoyable, but nothing will ever measure up to reading a good book and having your mind and imagination taken to places the digital world can’t.

there is so much reading material out there and it’s wonderful when you pick up a book by an unknown author and you can’t put it down - the feeling of ultimate reward when you’ve found that hidden gem. i am hoping to do just that with some fiction and non-fiction book recommendations for you this month;

‘the Choice point’ by Jonathon rhodes and Joanna grover

published in june 2023, British psychologist john Rhodes has looked into the scientific method of achieving your goals. delving into Functional imagery training (Fit) to help us in those moments of conflicting choices along with infusing mindfulness, motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy in a user-friendly model.

‘awful auntie’ by david walliams

in the children’s book, awful auntie, Young Stella Saxby finds herself orphaned and the rightful heir to saxby hall. however, her wicked aunt alberta has different plans and is determined to claim the grand estate for herself. With the help of her enormous owl, aunt alberta devises a cunning plot to trick stella and seize the hall.

‘yellowface’

by r.F. kuang

meet athena liu, a celebrated literary prodigy, and contrastingly, june hayward, who literally was a ‘no-one’. But fate intervened when athena met an untimely end in a freak accident. seizing the opportunity, june impulsively takes athena’s just-completed masterpiece and claims it as her own. however, living under athena’s shadow becomes increasingly challenging, and mounting evidence threatens to

unravel june’s stolen success.

‘Fairy tale’ by stephen king

At first glance, Charlie appears to be an ordinary high school kid, excelling in sports and academics. However, behind his confident facade lies the weight of tragedy— his mother’s death in a hit-and-run accident and his father’s struggle with grief and alcoholism. despite the hardships, charlie has learned to fend for himself and take care of his father. When he inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war and a responsibility far too massive for a boy to shoulder. “Fairy tale” is a spellbinding and terrifying testament to the power of imagination and the courage of those who dare to confront the unknown.

Whilst many enjoy books on a daily basis, this is a great day for those who perhaps don’t feel like they have the time to sit and enjoy a good book. the day is a reminder to give ourselves this time, to unwind and take a step back from the business that life tends to throw our way. Book lovers day is also a great chance to encourage younger ones to read whether that be taking them to a book or charity shop and allowing them to select a new book or by reading to or with them.

we’d love to hear if you have read any of these books and your ratings. Feel free to tag us on instagram with a photo of the book and use the hashtag #omBooklovers for a chance to be featured.
