"53818 Update" Winter 2025-2026 City of Platteville Newsletter
As we release the Winter 2025 edition of the 53818 Update, we want to share with our community that this will be the final publication of the newsletter—at least for now.
For the past nine years, the 53818 Update has served as a valuable source of information, storytelling, and seasonal programming for the City of Platteville. It has helped connect residents to city services, events, and initiatives in a thoughtful and engaging way. However, with growing audiences on our digital platforms and the increasing costs of publication, printing, and distribution, we are shifting our focus to more timely and flexible communication tools.
One of the challenges the team
tasked with creating content for the newsletter faced, is ensuring that stories and program details remain fresh and accurate from the time of design to the date of distribution. As program dates and details evolve, it becomes harder to guarantee that printed content reflects the most current information.
Communications Specialist Jodie Richards shared, “This truly marks the end of an era. I have been part of this project since it first began under the leadership of former City Manager Karen Kurt. Our goal was to create a magazine-style publication that featured editorials, while showcasing the many programs the city offers. I believe we accomplished that—and along the way, I had the pleasure of meeting so
many wonderful people in our community. As we transition to a more digital focus, I welcome your thoughts, ideas, and feedback at richardsjo@platteville.org."
The City of Platteville remains committed to transparent and accessible communication. We encourage all residents to stay connected through the various communication channels found on page 3.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Communications Specialist, Jodie Richards, for her tireless efforts in collecting stories, designing, editing, and publishing each issue. We also thank our city staff for their consistent contributions and our citizens for being an engaged and thoughtful audience.

RETIREMENT RECOGNITION – KEN KILIAN,
After more than 35 years of dedicated service to the City of Platteville, Ken Kilian has officially announced his retirement from the Common Council, effective October 20, 2025.
The City of Platteville proudly recognizes and honors Ken Kilian for his extraordinary service and dedication to our community. First appointed to the Common Council in 1984 to fill an at-large vacancy, Ken was subsequently elected to represent District 4 in April 1991, where he served continuously until his retirement on October 20, 2025—a tenure spanning over four decades and making him one of the longest-serving council members in city history.
Ken’s commitment to public service is reflected in his extensive involvement across nearly every city board, commission, and advisory group. His contributions include service on the Water & Sewer Commission, Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, Library Board, Museum Board, Park Board, Tree Advisory Board, Public Housing Authority Board, License Committee, Joint ET Committee, and the Historic Preservation Commission. His leadership
and insight have helped shape policies and initiatives that continue to benefit the community today.
During his time on the Council, Ken played a pivotal role in shaping policy that influenced the development and improvement of Platteville’s storm water system, the restoration of Harrison Park, the City’s designation as a Tree City USA, and the community’s recovery efforts following the 2019 tornado. These contributions reflect his deep commitment to environmental stewardship, public infrastructure, and community resilience.
Ken’s professional background in soil science, plant nutrition, and environmental quality has been a tremendous asset to the City. With a Bachelor of Science in Soil Science and Agribusiness, and Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Soil Fertility, Plant Nutrition, and Plant Physiology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Ken brought a unique and deeply informed perspective to city governance. His academic career included five years of teaching and research at Texas Tech University and 37 years at the University of
Ken’s technical expertise has been instrumental in guiding city decisions related to environmental stewardship, infrastructure, and land use. His efforts helped Platteville achieve and maintain its designation as a Tree City USA since 2016. He also played a key role in the documentation and preservation of Platteville’s historic properties, culminating in the adoption of the Chapter 27 Historic Preservation Ordinance in 2008.
Throughout his tenure, Ken has been a thoughtful and engaged leader. His retirement marks the end of an era of dedicated public service, and his legacy will continue to influence the City of Platteville for years to come.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Ken Kilian, and his family, for his decades of service, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of our community. We wish him well in retirement and thank him for the honor of his service.
Common Council District 4 Alderperson, Ken Kilian retires after more than 35 years of dedicated service to the City of Platteville
Wisconsin–Platteville, where he retired as Professor Emeritus in 2005.
Volunteer Spotlight: THANKING THOSE WHO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY
The City of Platteville would like to thank those who devote their time and talent to many aspects of our community, in a new "Volunteer Spotlight" feature in the 53818 newsletter. This Volunteer recognition feature shines a quarterly spotlight upon a dedicated individual or organization that has made great volunteer contributions and efforts in the community
The Parks Department would like to thank Molly Zuehlke for being a vital volunteer in our community. Molly has been a pillar for the Parks, Pool and Splash Into The Future committees. She's helped with everything from swim events, to coaching youth soccer, to helping raise money for the new pool facility. Her support on the committees has been top notch, and we cannot thank her enough for her time and efforts. Molly shared, "I am very grateful to be working with some super knowledgeable, talented, and passionate folks both on the committees, and through our partnerships with the city and Inspiring Communities Inc. It also has been really inspiring to see how many giving people there are in Platteville and our surrounding community. There are a lot of folks here who truly care about taking care of others."
Loren Callari has volunteered as the blacksmith for Mine Day at the Mining & Rollo Jamison Museum for numerous years. He first became interested in blacksmithing when he went to the Cornish festival in Wisconsin and a blacksmith there gave him a leaf keychain which left a long-lasting impression on Loren. After that, his mother encouraged him to take a blacksmithing class at Shakerag Alley in Mineral Point when he was 12 and his father accompanied him. After that he gathered and made his own tools and taught himself the rest of his blacksmithing skills. He has been blacksmithing for just over 9 years and now teaches his own blacksmithing classes at Shakerag Alley. Currently, he is a senior majoring in engineering at The University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign. We are so thankful to have him as a blacksmith volunteer during our events at The Mining & Rollo Jamison Museums.
In August of 2022, community member John Fick made the decision to join the Platteville Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter after moving to Platteville from Dodgeville. John had been a volunteer firefighter with Dodgeville Fire Department for just over 10 years. He brought his experience as a firefighter with him as well as having some specialized training in Technical Rescue as he was a member of the Iowa County Tech Rescue Team. John is involved with many aspects of the department including tech rescue, firefighting, extrication, and hybrid vehicle subject matter expert. John is currently a board member of Platteville Fire Department, Inc., which is a non-profit firefighter support entity and a Lieutenant on the Department. Most recently, John has been a co-chair of the Platteville Fire Department Capital Campaign which has raised over $1.8M to support the new fire facility project.
John was selected as the Firefighter of the Year for 2024 by the membership of the department highlighting his service and dedication to the department. We appreciate the dedication and commitment John has had for the department and our community!
Jared is a dedicated and valued member of the volunteer team at the Platteville Public Library. Over the past two years, his contributions have played an important role in the library’s ongoing success, whether assisting with daily tasks or bringing a consistently positive attitude to every project. He values giving back to his community and saw the library as an ideal opportunity to both serve and grow. By embracing the library’s mission of learning and connection, Jared has made a meaningful and lasting impact. We sincerely thank Jared for his time, commitment, and outstanding service. It’s a pleasure to have him on our team.

HOLIDAY TREE DISPOSAL
Best wishes to Circulation Lead Leanne Holdridge! Leanne is retiring after 30 years at the Library and we will miss her! We can’t imagine that there's a book in the library that Leanne hasn’t checked out, checked in, or shelved at some point. If someone greeted you at the front desk with a warm welcome and then gave you an excellent book or movie recommendation (particularly science fiction and horror), shared a delicious recipe, or traded dog stories, it was Leanne. We wish you the very best in your retirement, Leanne!
