Mah Jongg Madness

Torah Fund

PJTC Sisterhood will honor Carolyn Siegal as our 2015 Chay’ay Olam Recipient.

Sisterhood’s marvelous Mah Jongg Mavens have again graciously agreed to offer their time and talent to tutor their Sisterhood sisters in the intricacies of the game. We are offering to each the most basic elements of the game: 7:00 PM on Thursday November 5 in Wohlmann Hall. Mah Jongg neophytes are invited to attend the training session to learn how to separate dots from dragons and bams from cracks. We show you how to line ‘em up in a wall and score some points. Come learn the rules, schmooze a little and eat a little. You will have the opportunity to meet other players wishing to form groups that meet regularly in people’s homes. If you decide you wish to continue playing, our Sisterhood orders the regulation Mah Jongg cards (large font available) in January, for delivery in the spring. Please RSVP to Aty Rotter: altalya19@aol.com or phone (626)4455288Please.

PJTC Sisterhood is proud to announce that Carolyn Siegal has been chosen as this year’s Chay’ay Olam recipient. Carolyn will be honored at our annual luncheon, which will take place on Sunday, February 28, 2016. She is among our very special and talented women who make Sisterhood and the temple an incredible place. A California native, Carolyn graduated from UC Berkeley and has a master’s in public health from UCLA. After grad school, Carolyn moved to New York for work where she was blessed to meet her husband, Scott, and give birth to her two wonderful children, Blair and Daniel. In the early 1990s they moved to the Pasadena area, settling in Altadena and becoming part of the PJTC community, where Blair and Daniel attended LBSR and had their b’nai mitzvah. Carolyn and her family have been PJTC members for over 20 years. She is immediate past president of PJTC Sisterhood, a member of the PJTC board, the Strategic Planning Committee and Mission/Vision Task Force, and helps with MAC and History Committee activities. She previously served Sisterhood as VP Programming, Executive VP and Sunshine Chair. She was the PJTC Honoree at the Jewish Federation’s 2012 Women’s Forum. In addition to her involvement at PJTC, Carolyn is a Past President of the Board of Directors of Altadena Town & Country Club and is an advisor to the Pasadena Bioscience Collaborative. Carolyn has had a long career in market planning and business development for the pharmaceutical industry, including running her own consulting company for the past ten years. She is a life-long learner who enjoys reading, live music, movies, art museums, travel, sports and taking long walks in the Altadena hills. We will be sending you invitations to join us in honoring Carolyn on February 28. Please mark your calendars for that special date.

Holiday greeting gift boxes from Sisterhood were sent to PJTC’s eight “first-year-away” college students in celebration of the new year and Sukkot. Each box contained a beautiful ceramic cup filled with fruity treats, chocolate, sunflower seeds, and tea. The packages were sent to students in New York, Washington, D.C., Rhode Island, and to several recipients here in California. Holiday gift boxes are an annual tradition of Sisterhood. They help us maintain a connection to our young congregants away from home and their community for the first time. As Boa Pistol, who is studying at Humboldt State, wrote after receiving her gift, “it was very sweet and made me so happy! I didn’t think about how much I would miss the temple until I moved away, and the Jewish community up here is very different than PJTC. It brought a huge smile to my face and I’m so touched by how thoughtful you all were.” If we are missing any first-year away from home students, please contact us at terrymeng58@att.net. The FLAME
