Cantor Ruth Berman Harris Our Own Personal Mitzrayim Our tradition reminds us that the essence of Pesach is to free ourselves from chametz, leavened pro du c t s . P hy s i c a l ly speaking, we don’t eat bread, pasta and/or any other yeast products for eight days. But what about our spiritual chametz? The one that represents our ego, the “puffed up” side of ourselves? I would call that chametz the “chametz of the soul.” That chametz is tied up to our mitzrayim, our Egypt, a narrow place that we desperately need to leave from this year; and also, what about the areas in our world that are still enslaved? This year, during our eight days of Pesach, whether here at shul, in services, or at the Seder table: • Take a moment to go through each station of the Seder and sing and hum the melodies, inviting the generations that came before you to join you. • Focus on the areas of your life that enslave you, that keep you from reaching your fullest potential to be able to become the best version of yourself. The whole point of the Seder is to “re-live” the Exodus, to go from that

narrow place to a wider and freer one. • Tell the story to your children and grandchildren, that story and your story! • Ta l k a b o u t t h e narrowness that you feel in your life and in this world; and invite your guests, your children and yourself into the conversation. • Eat matzah and taste the maror, and work hard to identify yourself with the Exodus and relate to it. That’s why we have a Seder! • And finally, allow yourself to be inspired by our traditions so you can commit to action, and by doing so, set up an example for those around you and be proud of who you are becoming. As we celebrate this Pesach, may it bring liberation, redemption and freedom to us, our community, our nation, Israel and our world. This year we are slaves, next year let us be free. This year we are here, next year may we be in a Jerusalem of peace. Chag Sameach, A Zissen Pesach, Happy Passover! Cantor Ruth

At the Alexander Moss High School in Israel, a program that Milken Community High School students attend for a semester abroad, a teacher asked his students to write a letter to their future child about why they choose to raise them Jewish. The child comes to their mother after a difficult college situation, having experienced Anti-Semitism and wonders why?

USY Events by Melissa Levy, Youth Director

There’s been a lot happening here at PJTC and around the SoCal region, and I’m proud of how much our youth have become a part of it! Back in February, we took 19 of our Kadimaniks to Camp Ramah for a weekend Kinnus (gathering) with other young Jews from our FarWest Region. For many, this was their first Jewish sleep-away experience. They all had a fantastic time, and many are now asking their parents about heading to Ramah or another Jewish camp for the summer. Success! USYers are heavily invested in the rabbi candidate visits. They created their own set of interview questions (the kind of questions only teens can get away with asking!), and were grateful to be given their own time to meet with each candidate and assess how the candidates fit with the needs of PJTC and its youth. Those teens over the age of bar/bat mitzvah were also invited to participate in the same survey sent out to the entire congregation by the Rabbi Search Committee and are feeling very empowered that their voices will be heard during such an important hiring process. The first weekend in April you may notice many more teenagers at PJTC than usual! That is because for the first time ever, PJTC is hosting a USY regional weekend, called a Kinnus. The teens will be leading services Friday night and Saturday morning, and also welcome you to join them for Mincha on Saturday afternoon and a creative Shacharit on Sunday morning. This group of 9th-12th graders will be housed in the homes of our gracious congregants, and spend the weekend with great ruach (spirit), learning and discussing social action/tikkun olam, topic on Israel, torah and text study; and socializing with peers from throughout Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. The weekend is truly developed and led by the teen leaders involved, and I am always impressed to see the quality of the programming they put forth. A big thank you to Ricki Lane who helped Kadima roll rugelach last month, and to Nancy Carlton, Aty Rotter, Kaileh Pistol, and Sue Hogan for each volunteering their wisdom and experience to different aspects of the planning phase for our upcoming “Eateasy, Speakeasy” fundraiser. USYers spent the end of February and beginning of March testing out dozens of different recipes and cooking up quite a storm! They learned valuable cooking skills while they laughed and bonded over successful (and failed) recipes. We now have quite the menu set up for our May 1 fundraiser, when our USYers and Kadimaniks will turn the main kitchen and Social Hall into a pop-up 1920’s-style restaurant! They will cook and serve the food, learn appropriate ways to speak to adults in a service setting, choreograph a Charleston dance and then teach guests how to join in, create the decorations and table centerpieces, and they will even be the DJs and musicians for your entertainment pleasure! We encourage costumes. This is sure to be both an ambitious undertaking and an incredible learning experience for all involved. We hope you will join us on May 1, from 5:30-8:30 PM in the Social Hall. You must RSVP and pre-order your 5-course meal (yes, you read that correctly, there will be 5 courses--did I mention how ambitious our teens are?) by going to pjtc.formstack.com/forms/speakeasy. You will see further details about the menu online when you RSVP. We look forward to your support! The FLAME

It's Happening with Sisterhood March Comes in like a Lion….(and stays that way!)

Torah Fund

What an eventful month March has been. We transitioned from the last weekend in February into March with the 2016 Rae Goodstein Memorial Chay‘ay Olam luncheon for Women’s League Torah Fund, honoring Carolyn Seigal. Our Torah Fund VP, Bobbi Sloan, has written an article for this issue of the FLAME summarizing the lovely event. For the first time Sisterhood co-sponsored an afternoon of study with the Adult Education Committee on March 6. Nancy Carlton led a team in the kitchen to provide a lovely light lunch buffet, and the Rosh Chodesh Committee worked with Carol Sofer in designing an enlightening afternoon with Visiting Scholar-in-Residence, Rabbi Dvora Weisberg. On March 11 and 18, Arlene Weiss and a virtual army of bakers prepared special Onegs to welcome each of our rabbicandidates. One week before the Purim carnival, Judy Callahan organized another super efficient Hamantaschen Bake. We made over 700 “Haman’s Ears”!

On Sunday, February 28, 2016, eighty people gathered to honor this year’s Chay’ay Olam recipient, Carolyn Siegal. It was a beautiful event filled with good food, heart-warming speeches, and wel l-des er ve d prais es for Carolyn’s hard work and dedication to Sisterhood, PJTC, and other organizations. Besides such spectacular attendance, Torah Fund raised $1,330.00 in Carolyn’s honor and $288.00 for Sisterhood. Thank you for all who attended and donated. It helped make the event very special. This successful event could not have happened without the help of a few dedicated and talented people. The first person I would like to thank is Edie Taylor. She has been instrumental in helping me throughout the Torah Fund campaign. She helps me with mailings, editing, deadlines, and small but significant details that are important to operating smoothly. The second person I would like to thank is Bruce Applebaum. This year he printed the invitations and response cards as well as coordinating the labels and mailing details. My third thank you goes to Leah Sloan (my daughter) who designed the invitation and program for the event. The fourth person is Debbie Guest. She helped with the publicity and acted as a liaison with Women’s League. Lastly, I know I could not put on this event without Ricki Lane and Wendy Frankel. The food and decorations were amazing! In addition to my committee, I wish to say thank you to the speakers. Cantor Ruth and Rabbi Becky both spoke beautifully; conveying the gratitude of the recipients of Torah Fund’s donations. Barbara Schwartz and Maxine Silverberg provided us with news from Women’s League. Carolyn’s family spoke with humor, praise, and love. Thank you to Arnold Meltsner, Scott, Blair, and Daniel Siegal. Last, another thanks to Debbie Guest for introducing and presenting Carolyn with the award. And finally, thanks to Carolyn Siegal for being our honoree and for her help along the way in putting together the event. I look forward to next year!

by Debbie Guest, Sisterhood President

by Bobbi Sloan, Sisterhood VP Rae Goodstein Memorial Torah Fund

Tammy Silver joined with Barbara Levinson, Ruth Kaye and Mila Gierowitz to bring back Ricky Calvin’s Happy Purim Fundraiser. Mishloach Manot (goody bags) were produced for each PJTC member family, and many generous donors sent greetings across the PJTC community. Thanks to all volunteers and generous donors who made the program a success. March 26’s Sisterhood Shabbat was co-led by Franci Levine Grater and Susan Auerbach, with Cantor Ruth. Special aliyot and honors were given to our Sisterhood leaders and active members. Everyone was encouraged to attend and enjoy the Kiddush luncheon prepared by Sisterhood. Andrea Mark was the PJTC Sisterhood honoree at Federation’s 2016 Women’s Forum event on March 31. Many PJTC Sisters came out to support her on her special day. Looking ahead to April, please RSVP to Aty Rotter or Nancy Carlton ASAP if you wish to attend the limited-participant Biscotti workshop on Sunday, April 10. The Annual Women’s Seder will take place in Wohlmann Hall on Sunday, April 17. Attendance is strictly limited to those who RSVP. We cannot guarantee seats for walk-ins. Details for both events are outlined elsewhere in this FLAME.

Friday, April 8 6:00 PM, Social Hall

Joan Allen narrates this riveting portrait of Hungarian poet Hannah Senesh, a remarkable woman who risked her own life to parachute behind enemy lines — enduring capture, torture and, ultimately, death — to rescue Jews from Nazi persecution. Ahead of her time and on a mission of incredible odds, Senesh ultimately became a martyr in Israel, evoking the spirit of warrior-heroine Joan of Arc and earning the gratitude of those she saved. She is regarded as a national heroine in Israel, where her poetry is widely known. The headquarters of the Zionist youth movement Israel Hatzeira, a kibbutz and several streets are named after her. Please RSVP to ghalpert@flash.net to assure adequate seating.

Dinner at 6:00 PM will be followed by the installation of our new board. Shabbat services will begin at 7:30 PM. There is no charge for the dinner but we must have your reservations by Monday, April 4. Reservations will not be accepted after that date. Siyyum B’chorot All First-borns are Invited to Join Us! Friday, April 22, 8:30 AM

It is customary for first–born children to fast on the eve of Passover because of the death of the first–born children among the Israelites and Egyptians. Recognizing that this was not a very practical idea, the ancient rabbis devised a legal loophole to get out of it! If you are present at a study session where a section of the Talmud is finished (a siyyum), where it is a mitzvah to have a celebratory meal, that mitzvah overrides the mitzvah to fast, so you can eat. Join Rabbi Becky (also a first–born, so this is self-serving!) for a short (15-20 minute) study session and light meal, the final chametz, and then head off for more seder prep. We have been doing this session for many years now and it is very lovely. Non-first-born folks are totally welcome!

We are members of Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center, All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena, and Islamic Center of Southern California in Los Angeles and have been meeting in rotation at each of our institutions since 2007. Please join us on Sunday, April 10 from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM, at the Islamic Center, 434 South Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles. We are delighted to welcome our speaker, Shamim Ibrahim, Ph.D., psychologist and counselor with L.A. Unified School District. She was founding president in 1990 with a small group of committed supporters, of what is now the non-profit social service agency Niswa Family Resource and Support Center (Niswa in Arabic means Women in Community). This organization, based in Harbor City, provides resources to underserved immigrant Muslim families from South Asia, Afghanistan, and the Middle East, and to other minority communities in Southern California. We look forward to welcoming Dr. Ibrahim, and learning about this remarkably successful agency. We meet to learn from each other respectfully and in the spirit of friendship, and all who are interested are welcome to join us. After the one-hour talk, we share a vegetarian potluck meal, discuss the presentation, and formulate questions about it. Then there is a question and answer period with the speaker. A carpool will leave All Saints Church 132 N. Euclid, Pasadena, North Parking lot at 4:15 PM sharp for the Islamic Center. Set in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood in 1947, this poignant tale revolves around two of the most endearing characters in recent fiction: an 11-year-old Irish Catholic boy named Michael Devlin and Rabbi Judah Hirsch, a refugee from Prague. Thursday, May 12 - In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette by Hampton Sides. This New York Times bestselling author has written a white-knuckle tale of polar exploration and survival in the Gilded Age. In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe--the North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans, although theories abounded. With twists and turns worthy of a thriller, In the Kingdom of Ice is a spellbinding tale of heroism and determination in the most unforgiving territory on Earth. The FLAME
