Temple President Faith Segal I cannot believe that it is February already. El Niño has arrived and things are certainly busy at PJTC. The past several months have gone by fast. We have had a lot of change at PJTC recently, but change can be good and we are moving forward. Both our Rabbi Search Committee and Executive Director Search Committee are working hard to identify candidates for both positions and we are so fortunate to have all of these individuals working hard to help PJTC remain a strong, thriving community. Recently, after several years of hard work by many people, the congregation approved the new Bylaws of Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center. These bylaws will enable PJTC to operate effectively for many years to come. Part of these bylaws is a restructuring and reduction in size of the Board of Directors, and a strengthening of our committee structure. These changes will begin to be implemented with the work of our current Nominating Committee, chaired by Judy Callahan. On February 21, we will have a congregational meeting where we will vote to approve the slate for the Board of Directors for the upcoming year. We have just enjoyed a wonderful Shabbat Shirah concert. I would like to thank Cantor Ruth Berman Harris for once again presenting us with such a wonderful, moving, musical evening. I would also like to thank Sandy Hartford for all of her hard work in once again spearheading a very successful fundraiser for PJTC. In June, we will have our major

fundraiser of the year, which will be a Congregant of the Year event. I am happy to let you know that this year, the Congregant of the Year Committee has chosen to honor Phil and Judy Callahan for their many years of service and dedication to PJTC. We will be celebrating Phil and Judy on June 4 with a lovely evening of celebration and thanks for all they have done and continue to do for PJTC. I hope you all will attend and participate in this event. More details will be available soon. Our Adult Education Committee has planned a wonderful Scholar-inResidence program for the weekend of March 4–6. We will be hosting Rabbi Dvora Weisberg, who is the director of the Rabbinical School, HUC-JIR LA. She is also Associate Professor of Rabbinic Texts with a specialty in helping educators teach texts to lay people and to help us understand texts’ relevance in today’s world. She is a great teacher with a tremendous wealth of knowledge. It is sure to be a weekend of learning that you will not want to miss. Our youth have been busy as well the last few months. With programming ranging from religious school classes, USY and Kadima activities, such as a star-gazing party and Hanukkah sleepover, and a night of bowling and pizza, our youth are building relationships with each other and strengthening their ties to our community. In April, our USY will be hosting the USY Heschel Shabbaton at PJTC. This will be a full weekend of events that youth from all over our region will attend. Our

Adult Education Committee Scholar-in-Residence March 5-6

Rabbi Dvora Weisberg, Ph.D. will be the Scholar-inResidence at PJTC during the weekend of March 5-6, 2016, Shabbat Shekalim. Rabbi Weisberg will attend and participate in Saturday morning Shabbat services and then speak during the Kiddush lunch after services on Saturday, March 5. She will also be the featured lecturer/teacher on Sunday afternoon, March 6. The 1:00 PM Sunday event, which includes a light lunch buffet, is co-sponsored by PJTC’s Sisterhood. Both programs are open to the entire community. Earlier on Sunday, Rabbi Weisberg will be teaching a special class to LBS Religious School students and teens as part of a regularly scheduled morning learning program. Rabbi Weisberg is Professor of Rabbinics at Hebrew Union CollegeJewish Institute of Religion and a noted Talmudic scholar. In addition, she is director of the School of Rabbinical Studies of the Los Angeles Skirball Campus of the College –Institute. Rabbi Weisberg is an interpreter of classical Jewish texts (Talmud in

particular.) She specializes in connecting the historical ancient world of Jewish texts with contemporary Jewish life today. She has written on gender issues in rabbinic texts, exploring the rabbis’ understanding of family and familial relationships. Her experience includes teaching lay people, frequently in informal settings, as well as enlightening her rabbinic colleagues at regional and national conventions and conferences. Rabbi Weisberg received her BA from Brandeis University and her MA and Ph.D. in Talmud and Rabbinical Literature from the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) in New York. She has taught at JTS, the College of William and Mary and the University of Pittsburgh. She was ordained by Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Her scholarly program at PJTC will provide a learning opportunity for all who attend. The weekend is sponsored by the PJTC Adult Education Committee. For more information and to RSVP, please call the PJTC office at (626)798-1161 or email carolsofer@yahoo.com.

PJTC Board of Directors Report January 11, 2015 Meeting Mickey Bernath, Treasurer, continues to report that we will have a balanced budget by the end of the fiscal year. The total amount of bank and investment account balances increased to $8,100,000 at the end of December from $8,019,000 at the end of November, primarily as a result of an additional bequest of $75,000 from the Bunisky Trust. The Rabbi Search Committee, headed by Sandy Hartford and Noah GoldenKrasner, completed and submitted a 23-page questionnaire to the Rabbinical Assembly as a first step in the Rabbi recruitment process. Previously, several “listening sessions” were held to gather input from the Congregation. Dates have been scheduled for the Committee to interview candidates either in person or via Skype. Funds were approved for travel expenses. Twenty-five applications have been received for our Executive Director 2

position. Five candidates have been selected and will be interviewed by the Executive Director Search Committee headed by Jeff Landau. The new Bylaws were approved, with two minor amendments, at the Congregational Meeting on December 13. The revised document was approved by the Board and is now official. Any further amendments may be considered by the Board with ample notice to the Congregation. A proposed mission statement for the Congregation was presented to the Board by Keri Axel, representing the Mission Task Force. The Board made several comments that will be considered by the Task Force. The next Board meeting is set for Monday evening, February 22nd. This meeting will include consideration of the proposal for solar power, the slate of candidates for the coming term, and a policy regarding the use of security guards, as well as updates on the hiring process of a Rabbi and an Executive Director February 2016

USY Events

Men's Club News

by Melissa Levy, Youth Director

USY spent Martin Luther King Day out in our community, doing a full day of service, social action, and learning. Our USY chapter joined forces with the USY of Temple Ramat Zion in Northridge, so the teens could meet new people while they made an incredible difference in their community. Twenty-one teens participated in this full day of mitzvot. The day began by picking fruit with Food Forward, a local nonprofit that registers fruit trees from homeowners’ yards, finds volunteers like us to pick the fruit when it is ripe, and then delivers the fruit to local pantries and shelters. I’m proud to report that our teens picked over 480 pounds of fruit, which was then taken to Union Station Homeless Services. It was quite a fun start to the day! Our next step was making cat beds for the Pasadena Humane Society. A little bit of fleece sure goes a long way when it comes to needy cats! We then hopped in our vans and headed to the Museum of Tolerance to visit both the Holocaust and Tolerance exhibits. It was emotional, and the teens’ responses were quite heartfelt. Our fourth project was at the Pasadena Ronald McDonald House. The teens learned about this incredible service of housing and a sense of family being provided to mostly outof-country families whose children are getting muchneeded care at Huntington Hospital and other top-notch facilities. The teens scrubbed the house from top to bottom, did some gardening and weeding, and cooked a delicious dinner for the approximately 30 people living in the two houses on the campus. While we were waiting for the lasagna to cook through, the teens brought out some games to play with the children in the house – many smiles and much laughter ensued as our teenagers attempted to communicate with the mostly Spanish-speaking guests. But they all spoke the universal language of fun, that’s for sure! We were very grateful that Carmela’s Ice Cream gave us a group discount so we could treat the teens to a true local favorite as the day began to wind down. F i n a l l y, t h e d a y ended back at PJTC with s i mu lt a n e ou s s e r v i c e projects: making cat toys for the Humane Society, finishing up the cat beds from earlier in the day; making cards for the elderly, infirmed, and mourning; and pasting copies of the Ladino version of Ein Keloheinu back into our siddurim. As the teens had an opportunity to reflect on the day, they all begged to make “Into the Day” an annual tradition. I couldn’t be prouder of these young menschen. The FLAME

From the Eugene and Marilyn Fingerhut Memorial History Project by Michael Several, Project Chair

After a five year lapse, an era at PJTC ended when on May 5, 1979, the Sisterhood performed its last community musical. Rather than an original production, the Sisterhood revived their 1970 production, Mission Improbable with a change in title to Moishe and Mendel, changes in the names of the characters and small changes in the script and lyrics. Just as Mission Improbable was a take-off of the television series Mission Impossible, Moishe and Mendel was a take-off of the name of a popular television show, Mork and Mindy staring Robin Williams. The name of the main male character was changed from Benjamin Taylor to Moishe Ben Pipick, and he was portrayed as a clone from the planet Pipick rather than as an astronaut from 1970 who gets lost in time and space. The hero’s name characterized him as a “Moishe Pipik” which, according to the Daily Forward, is a Yiddish expression describing a person who is “aggravatingly or comically self-important.” The portrait of Moishe in the show, however, did not fit his name. Rather, he was a nice sweet Jewish guy without any seeming brilliance. In contrast to the dramatic changes in women’s roles and selfimage that was portrayed five years earlier in the last original Sisterhood production, Blazing Girdles, the revival took a nostalgic backward glance at women living in the mythological center of Jewish life—the Lower East Side of New York City. This parting glance by Sisterhood at the Lower East Side, with its heavy use of Yiddish, its cultural marker of Jewish food— borscht, herring, brisket, potatoes, and its portrayal of women as yentas, supportive wives, nurturing mothers, and proper young women, was increasingly divorced from an audience that grew up in the post-war years and were influenced and shaped by the dramatic political and social changes that began in the 1960s. This lack of connection was noted by Marcia Alper, who explained that the productions ended because “our humor was New York Jewish… the last time we did it, you could already see that the humor had changed and the knowledge of Yiddish. I don’t speak Yiddish, but I know a lot of the words, and the younger people didn’t know even that much. So that idea of Yiddish humor, of New York tenement humor was gone.” Marilyn Fingerhut, of blessed memory, gave other reasons. “It was too much work and also you can repeat history just so often and then you have to move on and find other projects.” And on they moved. In the 1980s Marilyn became a manager of a pharmaceutical sales office and was the first woman at PJTC to give the Yom Kippur Appeal, while Marcia broke ground at PJTC by becoming the congregation’s first woman Torah reader and the congregation’s first woman president. In hindsight, we might say that the Sisterhood productions mark the end of an era, yet gave us a peek into the future in which women transformed the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center.

The PJTC Caring Community Presents: Caring for Ourselves and Those We Love

by Cecilia Fox, PJTC representative on ISG Planning Committee with Norma Pratt.

Thursday, March 17, at 2:00 PM “A Holistic Approach to Medicine; Spirituality and its Role in Healing” Understanding how to find meaning in the setting of illness can bring great comfort and healing to those who are ill and their families. Dr. Jason Mann is a new member of the PJTC community, studying to become a rabbi. He is an oncologist whose current practice focuses on Spiritual Direction, Chaplaincy, and creating effective relationships between patients and their physicians. He will share some thoughts on how he teaches medical providers, patients and their families to provide loving support to others. Monday, April 11, at 7:00 PM “Taking Care of You; Taking Care of Others” Dr. Laura Mosqueda is Professor of Family Medicine and Geriatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. She is a compelling speaker who has a special interest in caring for older adults and in teaching future health care providers how to do so in a holistic and loving way, while maximizing elders’ independence. Her research focuses on the identification and prevention of elder abuse and she is the director of the National Center on Elder Abuse housed at USC. She likes cats. In May and June we will present a program on recognizing and supporting members of our community who are dealing with mental illness in their families, and a program on writing your ethical will. Watch for further announcements. All programs are free and open to the public. They will take place in Wohlmann Hall at the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center. For further information call the PJTC office at (626) 798-1161.

We will meet at 11:00 AM, Sunday, February 14 at All Saints Episcopal Church, 132 N. Euclid, Pasadena for an Interfaith Journey. We will attend Sunday morning service, go on a guided tour of its architecture, learn about Anglican faith traditions and how All Saints lives its mission. There will be time for questions. A light lunch follows in Sweetland Hall. There is no charge. Many religious institutions now offer such opportunities for those who are not members of their faith community. Over the next year, there will be similar events (dates not yet determined) at Islamic Center of Southern California, and Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center. We meet monthly, in rotation, at our three institutions, and revert to our usual schedule for March. Plan to sign up online SOON at All Saints Church’s website, via their Calendar for February 14, because the group is limited to only 50 people and the deadline is Thursday, February 11. Contact Cecilia Fox if you don’t have computer access. Arrive in good time, park in All Saints North Lot or on the street. Sunday, March 13, 5:00 -7:30 PM at Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center, Wohlmann Hall. Monique Saigal, Professor of French, Emerita, who taught for 45 years at Pomona College, Claremont, will speak about her life. As a 3-year-old FrenchJewish child, she was sheltered, hidden, and raised for years by a loving Catholic family in Nazi-occupied SW France, at the risk of their lives. Her father died at 26 in the trenches in WWII, her grandmother was about to be taken to Auschwitz, where she would die, and her mother was in hiding. Dr. Saigal, whose doctorate is from UCLA, will share the stories of 18 little-known women of the French Resistance, whose courage in saving lives during the German Occupation she documents in French Heroines, 1940 - 1945. We look forward to her talk and power-point presentation, and hope that many PJTC and ISG members attend. Our usual vegetarian potluck will follow the presentation. All are welcome at this meeting. Contact Cecilia Fox if you have questions.

Shabbat Service Schedule 9:00 am - Torah Study Every Shabbat, Lounge*

PJTC USYers are helping to plan and implement the weekend. It has been many years since PJTC has hosted a regional event and this is a great step in our growth as a USY chapter. Our Strategic Planning Task forces are hard at work and will soon be making recommendations for changes we can make to help PJTC be everything we all want it to be. You will soon notice some of these changes in things ranging from programming to communications, facilities and spirituality. I would like to thank all of you who have participated in the many goings on at PJTC the last several months: attending services, giving feedback to our Rabbi Search committee, joining the community for the Whitman dinner, enjoying one of our many Sisterhood, Men’s Club or adult education programs, or by bringing your children to Sunday school. You all help to strengthen our wonderful PJTC community.

Service

Please join us for a very special Shabbat on Friday, February 5, and celebrate with us afterward, as we honor our newest members at an especially festive Oneg. During services, instead of a sermon, we will gather in small groups to briefly discuss the week’s Torah portion. Don’t worry, you don’t have to prepare, and no previous experience is necessary! Your children are encouraged to attend this event and will break out into their own discussion group! And after the service, we will enjoy some delicious treats, sweets and fruits PLUS you’ll also be able to make your own sundae on Friday, everything you need to make a mouth-watering sundae. For your kids, too! And for those who like to drink their sweets, there will also be steaming hot apple cider with cinnamon sticks. We are so excited about this pilot program. We look forward to welcoming you, as you nourish your soul and your tummy.

Join Cantor Ruth and Judy Callahan, Director of B’nai Simcha Preschool for a half-hour Shabbat experience filled with music and movement for families with children age seven and under.
