She then went to law school, practiced as a litigator at Mishcon de Reya, London, and subsequently took a post as Associate Professor at BPP Law School, London, before the pull of the rabbinate proved irresistible. She won the Whizin Prize for Jewish Ethics in 2009 with her responsum about fair trade, and believes passionately in Judaism’s enduring power to add meaning and richness to our contemporary lives. Rabbi Silver is a recently qualified yoga instructor; her other interests include dance, theater, food and music. She hopes that her rabbinate embodies the deep love of Jewish learning – in all its many and varied forms - which has characterized her journey to date. Rabbi Weisberg will attend and participate in Saturday morning Shabbat services and then speak during the Kiddush Lunch after services on Saturday, March 5. She will also be the featured lecturer/teacher on Sunday afternoon, March 6. The 1:00 PM Sunday event, which includes a light lunch buffet, is co-sponsored by PJTC's Sisterhood. Both programs are open to the entire community. Earlier on Sunday, Rabbi Weisberg will be teaching a special class to Louis B. Silver Religious School students and teens as part of a regularly scheduled morning learning program. Rabbi Weisberg is Professor of Rabbinics at Hebrew Union CollegeJewish Institute of Religion and a noted Talmudic scholar. In addition, she is director of the School of Rabbinical Studies of the Los Angeles Skirball Campus of the College Institute. R a b b i Weisberg is an interpreter of classical Jewish texts (Talmud in particular.) She specializes in connecting the historical ancient world of Jewish texts with contemporary Jewish life today. She has written on gender issues in rabbinic texts, exploring the rabbis' understanding of family and familial relationships. Shabbat Shirah- A Celebration of Freedom

Rabbi Becky Silverstein

Our concert on January 24 was a resounding success! Gregory Jones from the First AME Church of Los Angeles and a very gifted group of gospel singers were our guest performers for our concert this year. Together with Cantor Ruth, Melissa Levy, and Jill Wright, and our musicians, David Boesch, Matt Cheadle, Betsy Kahn, and Jeff Landau, they created a high energy, exciting evening of music and song. Mazel tov to Cantor Ruth!!

Revelation at Mt. Purim With the addition of the extra month of Adar I, we have waited longer than usual, but Purim is coming. What exactly are we celebrating during Purim? And how might this prepare us for Passover? Seen through the experience of Esther, Purim has within it the recognition of the hidden, as well as the exposing of that which we keep to ourselves. Esther’s very name alludes to this theme, as the Hebrew world nistar means hidden. The revelation of Esther’s Jewish identity is a foreshadowing of the nahafochu, the reversal, of the decree against the Jews. Though the establishment of the 14th and 15th of Adar as days of celebration is a clear celebration of our victory over those who sought to destroy us (or our killing of many non-Jews, but that is another column), it is also a celebration of the power of revealing our identities to the world. Revealing ourselves to the world around us is risky business. It makes us vulnerable to the responses of others, responses of support, of solidarity, of confusion, of hate - all of which can be difficult to respond to and to internalize. This is true whether we are revealing our music preferences, our genders, our politics, our food preferences, or any other piece of what makes us who we are. In Esther’s world, revealing her identity was dangerous, the threat to her life is both perceived and real. In our world, this threat may be larger or smaller depending on who you are, how you walk through the world, and what messages you internalize from the world around you. Nonetheless, sharing ourselves with others is at the core of what it means to be human. How does Purim prepare us for Passover? My teacher, Rabbi Ebn Leader, suggests that we need to have the crazy, unbounded joy of Purim to counter the strict laws that govern our Passover observance. Purim also provides us a foreshadowing of liberation: the Jews liberation from the decree of death, and Esther’s personal liberation. It is a reminder of the agency we have in telling our stories and sharing ourselves. We might prefer to keep certain things private, but we can push to determine how we share the personal, information about ourselves that when revealed has the power to connect us to other people and change the landscape of the world we live in. This is the way we make change, big or small. In the pivotal moment of our story Mordecai asks Esther, “Who knows if you were brought to the crown for this moment?” What are the moments that we are each brought to where we can share ourselves and in doing so contribute to the world? There are several ways to celebrate Purim at PJTC this year -- the Purim Carnival with a retelling of the Purim story for our youngest community members (Sunday, March 20), a festive Megillah Reading for adults and older children (Wednesday, March 23), a USY Purim Lounge (Wednesday, March 23), and a Purim Program for 3rd-6th graders (Thursday, March 24). I look forward to celebrating with all of you!

It's Happening with Sisterhood Debbie Guest, President PJTC Sisterhood For this month’s column, I am sharing a little of what I heard from Marcia Alper at our Rosh Chodesh Adar last month. These are direct quotes: “I don’t consider myself a spiritual Jew nor a Saturday-go-to-shul Jew. I have a kosher house because it’s what I knew and because I realized it’s the world’s best visual aid for teaching Jewishness to children. If choosing one spoon instead of another can subliminally remind a child, or ourselves, that he or she is descended from kings and prophets, has a particular set of values and ethics and belongs to an ancient people who share a sense of kinship with each other, why wouldn’t I do that?” “...my Judaism was firmly embedded (and) I made a major discovery a few years later. As Sisterhood Vice-President for Programming, I went to the annual Conference for the Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (the international umbrella organization for Conservative Sisterhoods.) Sunday night was the installation of the new officers and I heard speeches, wonderful, intelligent, meaningful and moving speeches given by attractive, well-dressed women. So what was my discovery? That you could be an attractive, well-dressed woman and still be committed to Judaism. Somehow in my mind, I had divided the world of Jewish women into somewhat dowdy and nerdy committed Jews and the other world of attractive, up-to-date women who were only nominally Jewish. Three of those committed women leaders became my role-models. “Sisterhood also gave me the opportunity to teach Judaism and to share my love of its customs and traditions. There is a well-known book, written in the Middle Ages, of the rules of Judaism. It is called “The Shulkan Aruch”, which means "The Set Table." To me Judaism offers a table spread with delicious wisdom, laws, customs and traditions that I enjoy consuming and sharing with others. How can I not love a religion that 2,000 years ago set down laws on the fair treatment of workers and the poor, ordered farmers to set aside a portion of their fields at harvest time for the poor and decreed that if you lent money to a man who put up his tools for collateral, you had to return them to him every morning so he could work and if he put up his blanket, you had to return it to him every night.”

Men's Club News

PJTC Board Of Directors Report February 22, 2016 Meeting

On behalf of the Men's Club I want to thank everyone who once again made our Night at the Races the great social event that it is. I would especially like to acknowledge the entire Men's Club Board of Directors, Bruce Applebaum and his family, and Robert Brown and the janitorial crew for their tireless work, without whom this event would never have taken place. I also thank all those who attended and helped us raise money for the Louis B. Silver Religious School, the USY and for Camping Scholarships. A special thank you to our race sponsors: Judy and Phil Callahan, Barbara and Mel Cohen, Sandy and Steven Hartford, the Herbst Family, Anita and Jeff Landau, Stacy and Stu Miller and Connie and Art Taus. Our next major event is on Tuesday night, March 15 – our annual Dinty Moore Men's Club Man of the Year Dinner. This year I am proud to announce that we will be honoring Ira Blitz, our current Men's Club Secretary and Photographer. Entertainment will be provided by the Gem City Jazz Cats, a 19-piece big band. The cost of the dinner is $30 per person. Please RSVP by Tuesday, March 8. You can send your check made payable to PJTC Men's Club to the Temple Office. This will be another great event and I hope to see you all there. On a very sad note, the Temple and the Men's Club have lost four members in the last month. I wish to extend our condolences to the Emmerich, Gerst, Phillips and Segal families on the loss of Allen Emmerich, Ken Gerst, Herb Phillips and Barry Segal. We will dearly miss them all. The Men's Club will be co-sponsoring a bagel breakfast with the Adult Education Committee later this spring. More information will be coming soon. And finally, as I have mentioned before, for those of you who have camping-age children, please note that the Temple has money in a Camping Scholarship Fund. The Men's Club is pleased to help fund this program. Please contact Rabbi Silverstein to get more information about this exciting event for our Temple's youngsters.

Mickey Bernath, treasurer, continues to report that we will have a balanced budget by the end of the fiscal year and, as a result of unbudgeted reductions in compensation expenses, we will likely be withdrawing significantly less income from the Endowment Fund than originally planned. The total amount of bank and investment account balances decreased to $7,960,00 at the end of January, a reduction of $50,000 from the end of December, primarily as a result of the stock market decline. The Rabbi Search Committee, headed by Sandy Hartford and Noah Golden-Krasner, has identified two candidates who will be visiting PJTC in March. Specifically, Rabbi Noam Raucher, Assistant Rabbi of Temple Israel in Charlotte, North Carolina, will be here from March 10 through March 12; Rabbi Deborah Silver, Assistant Rabbi of Adat Ari El in Valley Village, will be here from March 18 through March 20. The Board approved the hiring of Beryl Strauss to fill the position of Executive Director. She’ll join PJTC on Monday, February 29. Three minor amendments to the By-Laws were approved by the board. These did not require Congregational approval. The Board approved a motion to fund the solar power project from the Endowment Fund. A final contract will be negotiated to determine the actual cost. Faith Segal, President, appointed Sandy Hartford to replace Valerie Grover on the L’dor v’Dor Endowment Fund Board. The terms of the new officers and Board begin April 1. The installation will take place at the Whitman dinner on Friday evening, April 8. Cantor Ruth’s Shabbat Shirah concert was a great success, netting more than $20,000. Christina Ortega was hired to replace Debi Bunting as Clergy Assistant. The next Board meeting is set for Monday evening, March 28. Respectfully submitted by Jeff Landau.

An Update from the Rabbinic Search Committee

Membership Committee

by Debby Singer

by Andrea Mark, Committee Chair

The interviewing part of the Rabbinic Search process is well underway. So far we have met three of our potential candidates; two via skype and one in person. As of this date, three more initial interviews are scheduled and one for round two. Each interview has lasted about 45 minutes and includes questions like: Why did you become a rabbi? What rabbinic roles give you the most/least satisfaction? Who has had the most important theological influence(s) on you? What has been your approach and experience in attracting and integrating interfaith families? Why are you interested in coming to PJTC? We are still receiving applications from the Rabbinic Assembly and we continue to be very discerning about those that we select to pursue. The qualifiers include the number of years the candidate has had as a pulpit rabbi and the types of other work experience he/she has had. Conducting the interviews has allowed us to see if the impressions gleaned from the paperwork provided by the candidates, is in sync with the impressions we get from these more personal interactions. We had meetings through the month of February and as of this date we have two candidates scheduled in March: Rabbi Noam Raucher, March 11/13 and Rabbi Deborah Silver, March 18/20. Our committee is grateful that many congregants chose to participate in the three focus groups designed to get input from our members. We hope that many more of you will participate in forthcoming opportunities to meet the candidates in person. In the meantime our co-chairs Noah Golden-Krasner and Sandy Hartford welcome your input. Please feel free to contact them with your questions and impressions. Email Sandy or Noah.

It was a fabulous event!

Do you recall our Congregational Survey? It was done in November 2014 … yes, that long ago. One of the strong messages from the survey was your desire to create closer relationships among yourselves. And, we listened. So, on Friday, February 5, we held a ‘Get to Know Your Fellow Congregant’ event, followed by an Oneg honoring our new members. It was great fun! We nourished both our souls and our tummies. This wonderful evening was cosponsored by the Membership Committee and the Relational Programming Task Force. For our Shabbat service, we formed small study groups, guided by Rabbi Becky, and talked about the Torah portion for the week. Well, some groups talked about that. Others took the time to get to know one another … a few groups wanted to continue talking, even after our services were over. And they certainly did! As we gathered in the Social Hall to enjoy a beautiful Oneg, the energy we created in the sanctuary continued. We noshed and schmoozed and made new acquaintances, and all that continued past the time we’d all normally leave. It was fabulous to see that, as late as 10 PM, there were still a number of small groups talking and kibitzing. Based on comments we received, we will be having more of these events. We look forward to your presence!

Florence “Pancho” Barnes was a California heiress, a force of nature, and a woman who lived a big, messy, colorful, unconventional life. Kessler tells the story of a high-spirited, headstrong woman who was proud of her successes, unabashed by her failures, and the architect of her own legend. Thursday, April 14 - Snow in August by Pete Hamill. Set in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood in 1947, this poignant tale revolves around two of the most endearing characters in recent fiction: an 11-year-old Irish Catholic boy named Michael Devlin and Rabbi Judah Hirsch, a refugee from Prague.

Thursday, March 17, at 2:00 PM in Wohlmann Hall

Understanding how to find meaning in the setting of illness can bring great comfort and “healing” to those who are ill and their families. Dr. Jason Mann, a new member of the PJTC community, is studying to become a rabbi. He is an oncologist whose current practice focuses on Spiritual Direction, Chaplaincy, and creating effective relationships between patients and their physicians. He will share some thoughts on how he teaches medical providers, patients and their families to provide loving support to others. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For information, call (626) 798-1161. The FLAME

A Mitzvah Project from the LBSRS Hei Class Students: Fruit for Everyone The Hei class of the Louis B. Silver Religious School is coordinating a new Mitzvah project. During the project they will be working with an organization called Food Forward, which is Southern California's volunteer-powered produce recovery resource. Food Forward's goals are to harvest food, fight hunger and build community. The areas the Hei class will be involved with are: farmers' market recovery, Can It! Academy, and Backyard harvesting. Farmers' market recovery is when Food Forward recovers surplus produce at local farmers' markets. The Can it! Academy is when Food Preservation and education classes are provided. Backyard harvesting is when Food Forward helps find homes with fruit trees and shares the unused fruit on the tree. Food Forward volunteers pick up the fruit from the trees. They then donate the fruit picked to local food banks. The Hei class wants to help the organization find the local homes, like yours, that have trees to donate unused fruit to help hungry people. 100% of the fruit collected will be donated to local hunger relief agencies. The families who donate their fruit will receive a tax deduction receipt. If you would like to register your fruit tree, there are a couple of requirements that you should know. Make sure your tree has at least 100 pieces of fruit on the tree you are registering, and your tree can not exceed 15 feet tall. Food Forward wants to make sure their volunteers will not get hurt. Food Forward will coordinate a convenient time for the harvest / picking up the fruit. Register your trees online at www.foodforward.org or by calling Food Forward's office at (818) 530-4125. Please notify Sondra Dreshner, Hei class teacher, if you are interested. The Hei class hopes you will participate with us by helping Food Forward. If you need any further information please visit Food Forward's website, www.foodforward.org, or call their office at (818) 530-4125. The FLAME

Just Added: Special Adult Ed. Program!!! Mark your calendars for Sunday, March 20 at 7:00 PM for a very special program provided by our own PJTC members, Irene and Otto Kahn. They are hosting Thilo Figaj, a German citizen with a lifelong interest in the Jewish history of the hometown he shares with Otto Kahn, Lorsch, Germany. Lorsch is a town 60 kilometers south of Frankfurt. Mr. Figaj, through his research, has developed a program on the Jewish history of that area which he often presents to groups. In March, Mr. Figaj and his family are visiting the Kahns for just a few days. His presentation includes a special ceremony, called stolpersteine, held in Lorsch, which Otto and Irene Kahn attended after having been located by Mr. Figaj. A stolpersteine is a monument to commemorate victims of Nazi oppression, including the Holocaust. His presentation also includes photos and documentation of the Jewish community. Don't miss this special program.
