23 Nisan - 23 Iyar May 2016
Temple President Faith Segal Looking to the Future It's May, I can’t believe it. I have been president of PJTC for a year now, and what a year it’s been. I would like to thank the 2015-2016 Board of Directors for all of their hard work and dedication to PJTC. We accomplished a lot as a board last year and now the work will continue. Although our Board of Directors will be smaller in size, we will remain strong and effective for the well-being of PJTC. I am looking forward to the year ahead and working with our new 2016-2017 Board of Directors. With the reduction in the size of our board, our committee structure will be stronger and will play a very important role for our congregation. I urge you all to find something that you are interested in and to get involved. The coming year should be a great one for PJTC. We are continuing to work on the implementation of our Strategic Plan, and to put in place the things that YOU have all told us are important to you and for PJTC. Our youth are more involved than ever before and USY and Kadima are thriving. By the time you read this FLAME, you will have heard that their Eateasy Speakeasy Restaurant Fundraiser on May 1st was a great success. Our youth planned the event, chose the menu, did the shopping and prep work and cooked for and served 140 people. They decorated the social hall, entertained their guests with music and dance, developed camaraderie with each other and enjoyed working together
to bring this event to PJTC. This night could never have happened without the leadership of our amazing youth director, Melissa Levy, and her “restaurant” team of Jake Levy, Aaren Heller, Karen Levin and Ricki Lane. Great job by all!!!! I am also very happy to tell you that after a long process and the dedication and hard work of our Rabbi Search Committee, Rabbi Noam Raucher has accepted the PJTC Senior Rabbi Position. Our Board of Directors has approved the employment contract that our negotiating team worked very hard on. And, at a congregational meeting on Tuesday, April 26, the congregation approved the general terms of the contract. I would like to thank Geoff DeBoskey, Sandy Hartford and Mickey Segal for their work on our behalf. Rabbi Raucher will be joining our community in mid-July. I know that he, his wife Tamar and their two young boys are very excited to move to the Pasadena area and become a part of our wonderful community. I am also happy to tell you that on June 4, PJTC will be honoring Judy and Phil Callahan as our Congregants of the Year. This is our major fundraiser for 2016. We will be celebrating Judy and Phil and all they have done for PJTC through the years. Their involvement with and dedication to our synagogue is amazing and we look forward to our “Evening Under the Stars” to celebrate them. Be sure not to miss

Strategic Planning Committee by Brian Mark, Committee Chair
In keeping with my commitment to keep you aware of how we are implementing the Strategic Plan, I want to give you an update on the past few months’ activities. The framework of implementing the Strategic Plan is being done, mostly, in two steps. Step one was the formation of the Task Forces, which we did last year. The charter for the Task Force is to interpret and analyze what you told us when you participated in the congregational survey (November 2014), and then to create an implementation plan. Step two is to forward the plan to a committee, which will set about to implement the plan. There is one exception to this model: The Governance Task Force had a different charter than the other five. Its responsibility was to complete the work that had been started by the Constitution Committee a few years earlier. The Governance Task Force successfully completed its responsibility and the congregation voted to adopt the new constitution earlier this year. My thanks to Matt Ober, who chaired this committee and to all the committee members, including the Constitution Committee. What follows is an update for each Task Force: Facilities: The Facilities Task Force will be evaluating all of the community uses and needs for facilities, the degree to which the present facilities meet those needs, and how its facilities can be maintained and improved to assure that they meet the needs of the community
into the future. Over the next several months, the task force will seek input from all constituencies and user groups. Mission/Vision: The Task Force will be presenting a new mission statement proposal to the Board at the May meeting. The vision statement is still being developed. Budget Transparency: This Task Force’s charter is proactively to inform the congregation about our finances, as well as make everyone aware of our fiscal solvency. It recommends a Quarterly Report to the congregation, an article of interest on one topic to be published in each FLAME and a Q&A section from congregant submissions. In addition, it recommends publishing an Annual Report, which contains more detailed information about our budget. Spiritual: This Task Force will present its plan to the Board in May. It developed a substantial and thoughtful plan. Once the plan is presented, it will be available to the entire congregation. Relational Programming: This Task Force presented its plan/charter to the Board in November. It has since merged with the Membership Committee, and will begin implementing its plan in the next 60 days. The plan is available by clicking HERE. As I’ve stated in every communication with you, I will be keeping you aware of activities, updates, results (good and bad). I welcome your observations and comments. Please reach out to me: StratPlanPJTC@gmail.com.

The 2015-2016 Torah Fund campaign is winding down. If you have made a pledge to Torah Fund and have not yet sent me a check, please do so at this time. I will need to make my final payment to Women’s League by the end of May. Education is one of the most important means of transferring the wealth of tradition from one generation to the next. When you contribute to Torah Fund, you are investing in the future of our children. An investment in knowledge pays the best interest! Torah Fund supports the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies in Los Angeles, Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies in Israel, and Semenario Rabinico Latinoamericano in Buenos Aires. B'not Mitzvah
From the Eugene and Marilyn Fingerhut Memorial History Project
Eliana and Ava Gabriel, daughters of Neil and Melissa Gabriel, will be called to the Torah on May 21. Eliana and Ava have attended religious school at PJTC since they were three years old. They are seventh graders at La Canada High School. Eliana loves to sing, and enjoys being a member of the LCHS Women’s Ensemble Chorus. Ava’s hobbies include playing the guitar, photography, and sketching. Eliana and Ava are active with nonprofit animal rescue organizations, including The Catherine Fund, Happy Strays, and Fast Friends. They chose The Catherine Fund for their mitzvah project; they have been spending Sunday afternoons volunteering with The Catherine Fund since the fifth grade. The Catherine Fund raises money to spay and neuter cats and dogs in the Los Angeles area, and has also found good homes for many animals through the years. Eliana and Ava have handmade over 100 cat toys to sell this year, with 100% of the proceeds going to The Catherine Fund.

The Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center recently obtained a digital copy of three notebooks Rabbi Jacob Halevi donated to the American Jewish Archive. Rabbi Halevi was Temple B’nai Israel of Pasadena’s sixth rabbi in the first 10 years after it was incorporated and the congregation’s third rabbi trained at the Reform Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. Serving as the spiritual leader of the Pasadena Jewish community between 1933 and 1939, Rabbi Halevi and his wife, Clara, were both remembered in the oral histories taken of people who lived in Pasadena prior to World War II. Rabbi Halevi dedicated the burial section that Temple B’nai Israel obtained at the Home of Peace cemetery and was particularly involved in developing the religious Sunday school at the temple. However, Clara was most remembered in our oral histories as she was the one who trained many of the congregation’s young men for their b’nai mitzvah. The digital copy of the three notebooks we obtained from the American Jewish Archive covers the six years Rabbi Halevi was in Pasadena. Totaling 334 pages, the notebooks enlarge our documentary record of the 1930s. Prior to obtaining the copy of Rabbi Halevi’s notebooks, our record of the decade consisted only of annual temple yearbooks, some of which contained brief descriptions of structures and activities of the organizations during the previous year, and annual advertiser books for B’nai B’rith’s annual fund raising dances. The number of documents in the three notebooks is far greater than the number of pages because many pages contain more than one document. Together, the entire collection includes monthly bulletins that list the congregation’s activities, announcements and invitations to events, and newspaper clippings from the Pasadena newspapers and the B’nai B’rith Messenger. Memories of Rabbi Halevi and our documentary record of what he did prior to receiving the digitized documents from the AJA were limited. However, with the acquisition of the notebooks, we are now able to have a much greater understanding of his concerns, the actions he took, the issues the Jewish community faced, and the activities the community participated in. One of Rabbi Halevi’s major concerns was Nazi Germany and the rise of anti-Semitism in the United States. Based solely on the yearbooks, it appeared that he first became concerned about Nazi Germany in 1935, when he wrote in his message to the congregation in the yearbook, “It is an ironic commentary on the failure of the nineteenth century to achieve its promise of universal brotherhood that the native land of Immanuel Kant is the arena today of as cruel and vindictive a campaign of hate as history has rarely witnessed.” However, we now see from his notebooks that he took up the issue as early as 1933. As the decade proceeded, the notebooks document Rabbi Halevi’s increasing connection with Pasadena’s Christian community as he sought support in drawing attention to the increasingly dire condition of Jews in Germany and help in undermining growing anti-Semitism in the United States. Through the perspective of the record is Rabbi Halevi, the notebooks document how embracing and supportive Pasadena’s Christian community was to the city’s Jewish community during its hour of need. This is the first of a series of articles based on a digital copy of documents obtained from the American Jewish Archive.
Michael Karish to be presented with the Madeline Mark Memorial Award at June 10 Services
by Patricia Bunin
A major insight Michael Karish gained from his experience as a volunteer at ACEing Autism was that his chosen life work needs to be something that has a significant impact on many people. His moving essay about his journey of selfdiscovery while teaching tennis to autistic children has won Michael the 2016 Madeline Mark Memorial Award. The award honors the memory of Madeline Mark who was deeply involved in encouraging our youths to find their own highest expression of growth, motivation and achievement. The MMMA is given to the student whose essay is deemed to best represent the values of reflection, growth, and positive change as a result of an insight gained from a life experience. Michael will be recognized for his achievement, and read his winning essay, during Friday night services on June 10. A link to his winning essay is posted HERE. His name will be added to the Madeline Mark Memorial Honor Plaque, prominently displayed at PJTC. In addition, the award consists of a $250 grant. The son of Haley and Marc Karish, Michael, 14, is an eighth grader at John Marshall Fundamental School where he is a member of the tennis team. His love of the sport prompted him to become involved at ACEing Autism, where he shared his talents by teaching tennis to autistic children. He feels that the challenge and the reward from that experience shaped the adult he will become. "It was such a good feeling to see that I could have a positive influence and teach these kids something they can enjoy," he said. But his work there is not over. Michael has enlisted the help of his tennis coach to encourage other team members to join him in volunteering when ACEing Autism resumes operations later this year. An active member of USY, Michael also plays trumpet in his high school jazz band. As he considers future career paths in one of his many fields of interest—math, science, history, medicine, there is one thing he knows for certain: it will involve helping others. The FLAME

Family Kabbalat Shabbat Service Goodies for Local Children and Babies by Edie Taylor
6:30 PM Social Hall
I have been the coordinator for a varied group of women who make afghans, stuffed animals and other gifts for children in our local hospitals. Some are PJTC members, such as the Stichers, others are from Temple Beth David, and some are not affiliated. They are all talented with their handiwork and are happy to know that children throughout our area are benefiting from their gifts. One of our non-Jewish women has reached the 1,000 mark in the number of baby “blankies” she has made for us. Bags of “goodies” are delivered to me by Linda Rourman, Trudie Strobel, and Robin Evans of Temple Beth David. I sort them out and divide them between pediatric departments at Huntington Hospital, County/USC and Bienvenidos, a foster care agency. We are all grateful to our friends who bring me the finished items and those who make the deliveries All of our creators pay for their supplies; donations of acrylic yarn and funds would be greatly appreciated. The photo above is of a group of nurses and administrators at County/USC who had just received 2 bags of "goodies" that were delivered by Catherine Lefkfowitz, one of their nurses and a PJTC member. Book Club
by Cecilia Fox, PJTC representative on ISG Planning Committee, with Norma Pratt
by Liz Green, Committee Chair
Please join us in our lively discussions of books and help us make decisions about choosing readings for future meetings. Books are available at Vroman’s at a 20% discount. We are listed as the PJTC Book Club. We meet on the second Thursday of the month, in the Lounge, at 7:30 PM. Thursday, May 12 - In the Kingdom of Ice: The Grand and Terrible Polar Voyage of the USS Jeannette by Hampton Sides. This New York Times bestselling author has written a white-knuckle tale of polar exploration and survival in the Gilded Age. In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe–the North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans, although theories abounded. With twists and turns worthy of a thriller, In the Kingdom of Ice is a spellbinding tale of heroism and determination in the most unforgiving territory on Earth. Thursday, June 9 – Two Years Eight Months and Twenty-Eight Nights by Salman Rushdie. The author concocts a fantastic fable about colliding worlds. Sometime in the near future, a storm reopens the slits between the Earth and a jinni-filled realm above. A war with familiar stakes begins. It pits reason against fear-based religious fervor, and wreaks havoc for 1,001 nights. “Courgeous and liberating…a breathless mash-up of wormholes, mythical creatures, current affairs and disquisitions on philosophy and theology,” – The New York Times Book Review.
We are members of Pasadena Jewish Temple & Center, All Saints Episcopal Church, Pasadena, and Islamic Center of Southern California in Los Angeles and have been meeting in rotation at each of our institutions since 2007. May Meeting: Please join us on Sunday, May 15, 5:00 to 7:30 PM at All Saints Church, Sweetland Hall, 132 N. Euclid, Pasadena. Park in the north lot. (Note: We will not meet on Mothers’ Day, so this is a week later than usual). We are delighted to welcome physicians Faisal Khan, M.D., Kimberly Shriner, M.D., and Donald Thomas, M.D. Each will describe his/her individual motivation to lead a life of service in remote areas of the world, in addition to fulltime careers in the L.A. area. They have created or joined programs in remote, severely medically underserved areas of Africa and/or Latin America. Panelists will describe what drew them to this important work, in terms of personal ethics and religion. We meet to learn from each other respectfully in the spirit of friendship, and all who are interested are welcome to join us. After the one-hour talk, we share a vegetarian potluck meal, discuss the presentation, and formulate questions. A question and answer period with the speakers follows. For further information contact Ada Ramirez (626) 583-2734, ARamirez@allsaints-pas.org, or Cecilia Fox, c/o PJTC office (626) 798-1161, cecilia.r.fox@gmail.com. Theater Havurah

Sunday Evening, May 22 at 7:00 PM Urban Homestead Do you love old folk songs? Do you love to sing in the shower? Well ... here’s your chance to sing unabashedly in the company of friends and new acquaintances and nobody cares if you sing off key!!! Come join the PJTC Theater Havurah for a fun-filled evening of song at the Urban Homestead Hootenanny on Sunday evening May 22 from 7:00 PM until around 10:00 PM. The Urban Homestead, located at 631 Cypress Ave, Pasadena, 91103 (626-795-8400) is a family-run, highly-productive city farm. In addition to weekly Hootenannies, they have folk music concerts, sell their produce, serve meals and hold workshops in food preparation, folk music and folk dance, and crafts ... an amazing place right in the middle of the city. So here’s the deal: there is a $10 cover charge which can be credited toward food and/or beverage purchase. If you choose not to eat or drink anything, you still must pay the cover charge. But we highly recommend eating dinner there, because the food is wonderful (all vegetarian). Also, since this is a residential neighborhood, parking is on the street and we ask that you respect the neighbors. Lastly, they DO HAVE HEATERS so you won’t be cold. Rain cancels. Please send your $10 per person check to Marcia Alper, 2286 Lambert Drive, Pasadena 91107. Make the check out to Adrienne Bass. Your check is your reservation. Honor Loved Ones at PJTC
Tree of Life There are many ways to commemorate simchas that occur to your loved ones here in Pasadena or anywhere in the world. As an everlasting tribute, have a LEAF placed on PJTC’s Tree of Life. Our Tree is located on the balcony overlooking the lobby. You may want to acknowledge a birth, special birthday, wedding anniversary, graduation, b’nai mitzvah, or other important milestones. You may wish to make the purchase on your own or share it with friends. All occasions are worthy of note. Placing a Leaf ensures that they will be remembered into the future. (Please keep in mind that these are NOT memorial plaques.) The cost per leaf is only $150. The text may include up to 50 letters and 4 lines. Bruce will make up a Tree of Life Certificate which you can present to your honoree. Memorial Plaques To commemorate a life and memorialize the Yahrzeit of your loved one, you may place a bronze plaque in the entrance to the sanctuary. On the eve of the Yahrzeit, the small light will be turned on and the person’s name will be mentioned from the Bimah at the time of the Kaddish prayer. The cost is $350. The script can include 3 or 4 lines and a maximum of 30 spaces. In addition, the name is included in the yearly Yom Kippur Yizkor booklet. For additional information and to place an order, contact Bruce at the Temple office (626) 798-1161. 6

Your Adult Education Committee is pleased to announce a Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival movie screening at Laemmle Playhouse 7 Theatres, 673 E. Colorado Blvd., Pasadena on May 22, Sunday morning at 11:00 AM. PJTC is a supporter of the annual Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival at the "Patron" level. At this screening of a very special new film of Jewish interest, the filmmaker or producer will be on hand to introduce the film, conduct a follow-up discussion and answer questions. The film title will be announced in congregational emails and weekly announcements. This year the PJTC Theater Havurah is collaborating with Adult Ed Committee to co-host this program. Invite your friends to join you at the movie and then have lunch afterward at one of the many restaurants on Colorado Blvd, in downtown Pasadena. This is a perfect way to spend a social Sunday afternoon and also benefit PJTC, since a small amount of the movie receipts will come back to PJTC. They are a talented and energetic group of seventeen-year-old Israelis, one of several such troupes travelling across North America this summer as ambassadors of the State of Israel. The ten teenagers, five girls and five boys, come from all around Israel. Their families hail from many different backgrounds: Sephardic, Ashkenazi, Yemenite, and Ethiopian. Each one brings his or her life experiences to the Caravan. When they return to Israel in the fall, they’ll be entering their senior year in high school after which they’ll be joining the Israel Defense Forces. When the Scouts take the stage with enthusiasm and joy, they’ll paint a picture of their homeland that is poignant and exuberant. It’s customary for the Scouts to be hosted by synagogue families for the evening after the performance. If you’d be interested in hosting a Scout or two, please contact Jeff at JL4624@pacbell.net or (818) 952-9521.

Joan Allen narrates this riveting portrait of Hungarian poet Hannah Senesh, a remarkable woman who risked her own life to parachute behind enemy lines — enduring capture, torture and, ultimately, death — to rescue Jews from Nazi persecution. Ahead of her time and on a mission of incredible odds, Senesh ultimately became a martyr in Israel, evoking the spirit of warrior-heroine Joan of Arc and earning the gratitude of those she saved. She is regarded as a national heroine in Israel, where her poetry is widely known. The headquarters of the Zionist youth movement Israel Hatzeira, a kibbutz and several streets are named after her. Please RSVP to ghalpert@flash.net to assure adequate seating The FLAME

LBSRS helps MAC with Passover Deliveries Every year at Passover the Membership Assistance Committee (MAC) delivers greetings to PJTC congregants who have been hospitalized or bereaved in the previous six months. This year some of the deliveries were enhanced by colorful cards hand-made by children in the Louis B. Silver Religious School. Many thanks to the young people for helping to brighten the holiday for our congregants!
Dear PJTC community, I want to thank you for all of the love and support you have given us during the loss of my mother, Benay Grater. We appreciate all of the cards, notes and donations made in her honor. And we were deeply moved by all of you who came to the shiva service, helping us to mourn in our community, after returning home from the funeral in South Carolina. On behalf of Franci, Ella and Noah, we are most grateful to feel surrounded in this time of loss and grief. With gratitude, Joshua The Phillips family wishes to thank the PJTC family for their kindness and caring expressions at the passing of Herbert Phillips on February 24. We are most appreciative, Zina
A Kiddush Plea
Not many April showers Lots of May flowers and a few nice Kiddush hosts too. But our open dates will come quite soon. Could you help on one of the two first weeks of June? Call or email Roz Scherr, She'll be glad to hear from you!
Thank you to everyone who offered their condolences on the loss of Faye’s beloved brother, Stuart Chason. Faye and Ike also appreciate all the congratulations on the birth of their first great-grandchild, Izak Mayer Stark. We’re grateful to you all.
Yiddish Song Get Together – Sunday June 26
Come along to our Sing-along, hum-along and listen-along. Some congregants at PJTC are forming a Yiddish song club. We intend to get together about four times a year on Sunday afternoons in Wohlmann Hall. Our first gathering will be June 26 at 12:30...about two months away. Marty Kirschen and others have collections of songs which we will listen to or sing along with. The songs will be on CDs, audio cassettes and video. and if we have some piano players – that too. Don’t worry about singing out of tune … off-notes will likely cancel each other out. No need to know Yiddish. We will have song sheets. Marty has hosted such gatherings before, some with Annie Cheslow. They have proved fun and meaningful! We will have some discussion as well. We also look forward to many of our participants bringing along or suggesting songs, as well as being guest song leaders – sorry, no solos permitted. We will have snacks and beverages and anticipate our get togethers to last about one to one-and-a-half hours. If you are considering coming, please call or email Marty at (626) 797-3280 or mkirs54321@aol.com. The FLAME

Much to Celebrate
by Lisa Feldman, MA Ed., Head of School Weizmann Day School
At Weizmann, we are grateful every day for the exceptional education we are able to provide, thanks in large part to our supporters. We recently had an opportunity to thank our school’s major donors more directly at a lovely event graciously hosted by alumni parents Simon and Nurit Burrow. The event featured a blind wine tasting, wonderful food and an enthusiastic group of supporters – including current parents, alumni parents, grandparents, board trustees, teachers, and area synagogue members etc., who share my love for our school.

At the event, we were pleased to announce that we had attained our Annual Fund goal of $100,000 (around 10% of our total school budget.) We also shared that we have raised almost $263,000 in cash and legacy bequests for our endowment fund, and are less than $10,000 away from unlocking the final round of cash incentives for completing the three-year endowment program. (If you are interested in being one of our endowment pioneers, and helping us to secure another $4,000+ in additional funds, please contact info@weizmann.net). Finally, we were very excited to announce that for the first time in the school’s history, our middle school students will be going to Washington, D.C. for a four-day trip. Even more special is that they will be joining their peers from New Horizon, the local Muslim school. I cannot think of a better way to express and exemplify the values of unity, acceptance and community that our school fosters in our students! I am so grateful for ALL of our schools supporters who give so generously of time, talent and funds, to keep our school and community thriving. Wishing you a Hag Pesach Sameah – Happy Passover!
