Rabbi Joshua Levine Grater Ninety Years and Counting T h i s month we are c e l e b r at i n g our 90th year as a synagogue in Pasadena. Think back to the 1920s, when we first opened our do ors (at a different location, with a different name), and how much history has transpired since that day. The Jewish world has been changed in remarkable ways: from the horrors of the Shoah to the elation of the State of Israel; from being shunned people in the places we lived to being an integral and vibrantly successful part of
American life. On May 5, thanks to the hard work of our wonderful committee, headed by Amy Richardson and Faith Segal, we are having a huge birthday party, which we are calling our 90th Jubilee. As you know, for the past several weeks we have hosted parlor meetings (aka discussions) about PJTC’s financial state and our “Campaign for the Future of PJTC.” For those of you who have been fortunate to attend
one of these meetings, you recall that we opened every one of them with that question: “Why do you come to PJTC. What about PJTC is meaningful to you?” As you can imagine, the responses were heartfelt, sincere and personal. And the act of sharing these personal stories with each other brought us immediately closer together and allowed us to engage in an open dialogue about the PJTC we wanted for the future, knowing that we were all on the same team. Of course there also was concern, frustration, disagreement and
