Windbreaks are ideal for all types of crops, from container grown nursery stock to field crops. Artificial windbreaks will give you immediate protection along with constant permeability. Unlike natural windbreaks, they don’t compete with crops for nutrients or water. A windbreak should face the prevailing wind to give the best protection. A windbreak with less than 50% permeability will give a reduction in the destructive value of the wind. However 50% - 55% permeability has been found to be the most efficient. Avoid gaps in the windbreak or where the net does not reach the ground as this can result in local acceleration of the wind.
Although a dense (e.g. 90%) windbreak has a more immediate effect of reducing windspeed, a 50% windbreak will give more protection over a longer distance. The size of the post is relative to the height of the windbreak and the strength of the material chosen. See diagram for recommended construction. The netting should be fixed to the side of the posts facing the wind. When using lightweight material the position of the horizontal supporting wires should be marked carefully on the uprights, an allowance must be made for the net to be folded around the top and bottom wires.
