TYPICAL CONSTRUCTION OF A WINDBREAK

Windbreaks are ideal for all types of crops, from container grown nursery stock to field crops. Artificial windbreaks will give you immediate protection along with constant permeability.

Unlike natural windbreaks, they don’t compete with crops for nutrients or water. A windbreak should face the prevailing wind to give the best protection.

A windbreak with less than 50% permeability will give a reduction in the destructive value of the wind. However 50% - 55% permeability has been found to be the most efficient.

Avoid gaps in the windbreak or where the net does not reach the ground as this can result in local acceleration of the wind. Although a dense (e.g. 90%) windbreak has a more immediate effect of reducing windspeed, a 50% windbreak will give more protection over a longer distance.

The size of the post is relative to the height of the windbreak and the strength of the material chosen. See diagram for recommended construction. The netting should be fixed to the side of the posts facing the wind.

When using lightweight material the position of the horizontal supporting wires should be marked carefully on the uprights, an allowance must be made for the net to be folded around the top and bottom wires.

Both the standard and heavy duty windbreaks are made from extruded HDPE and are designed to reduce wind speed by approx. 55%. The standard is the traditional material used for many years. The heavy duty is more of a cladding type windbreak material with reinforced strands, making it a much stronger material.

Shade Netting

Shade covers are a cost effective means of immediate shade to protect crops and plants. By shading a crop you can control the temperature under a polytunnel allowing for a longer growing season if required. Available in a range of densities, available in either green or black. We stock a number of different sizes to cater for all applications and bespoke covers can also be fabricated. Our shade covers are made to measure or available by the roll. Tunnel Covers

Tildenet Tunnel Covers are made to measure sheets of one of our own fabrics designed to reduce light emittance within a required area, normally produced to fit directly onto polytunnels. These covers can be made from any grades from our Loktex range of shade fabrics in any colour as well as the Monofilament windbreaks. Bespoke insect net covers can also be produced, please see page 18 for more details. Prices are stated per m2, please refer to the adjacent formulas to calculate the size of cover required. Maxi Net is thermal crop cover, very similar in application to the Thermagro non-woven fleece. This net is very lightweight and can sit directly onto the crop, providing an economical solution to protecting crops from frosts. Due to the microclimate it creates, it can keep a temperature of 3 degrees higher than above the net. Unlike Thermagro Fleece, the Maxi Net is much stronger and can be re-used for several seasons, reducing problem of waste management and disposable costs. Due to its strength, the Maxi Net is the ideal solution for windy sites where non-woven products can suffer damage. Maxi Net is a transparent fabric and allows sunlight to pass through it to the crop allowing for excellent photosynthesis as well as allowing much needed water to pass to the crop.
