Mother of Six Joe was proud of his family of six children. He frequently referred to his wife as "Mother of Six," much to her annoyance. Finally, she cured him of his habit. At the end of a big party, Joe called out loud enough for everyone to hear: "Ready to go, Mother of Six?" "Any time you are," she replied, "Father of Four." Cleaning Day Saturday had always been "cleaning day" in at our house, and my mother still adhered to the ritual even after all her children had left the nest. HOLIDAY EATING TIPS 1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the holiday spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls. 2. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat. 3. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission. 4. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Holiday party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello? 5. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog. 6. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again. 7. Same for pies. Apple, Pumpkin, Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

For the past 2 years on the 2nd Saturday in December Veterans groups and others have gathered at the National Cemetery in Danville to honor or fallen hero’s and those still missing in action with a program called “The Laying of the Wreaths”. Many gathered for the ceremony to hear the speaker and to remember the fallen. A representative from each branch of the service hung a large wreath on a stand and then saluted it as that branch of service was called. Another wreath was also hung for all the soldier still missing in action. After that those attending the service also laid wreaths at the other markers in the cemetery. Many of the wreaths were donated this year. This is a yearly event held all over the United States on the 2nd Saturday of December. Miss Kara Dalton from Callands, first visit with Mr.& Mrs. Santa

THIRTY-ONE COMES TO DANVILLE Boys & Girls Club in Danville is chosen to receive gifts from “Thirty-one Gives”
“Thirty-one Gives,” a philanthropic arm of “Thirty-one Gifts” teamed up with The Today Show Toy Drive and the Direct Selling Association to donate to charities around the country. Thirty-one Gives donated 250,000 products to be distributed in all fifty states to various organizations and agencies. The Danville Club was one of only 74 charities nationwide to be a part of this initiative. On Friday, three state Thirty-one representatives, Ms. Dana Elder, Ms. Rachel Catoe, and Ms. Holly Rudder came to the Foster Street Club and assisted in distribution of their products. The youth had their choice of backpacks, cinch sacks, zipper bags and totes. Kids from 5 to 18 were excited to pick a product as they lined up to see what Thirty-one had furnished. They also provided cupcakes and chips for the kids that added to the excitement of the day and the festive atmosphere. Unit Director, David Thomas said, “This is a really big deal – to be chosen out of so many charitable options all across the U. S. Understandably, we are more than appreciative of the goodwill from Thirty-one Gives, and I want to say publicly to them – thank you so much on behalf of the kids and the staff.” The Thirty-One Gives representatives were presented with a plaque of thanks that was signed by club kids.

Schoofield Chorus Christmas Program This year’s Christmas program was presented by Schoolfield’s Fourth and Fifth Grade students at Bonner Middle School on December 18th at 7:00. The “American Traveler” wandered the globe in search of the spirit of Christmas. The first stop was Israel where students shared a dance. Next, came Mexico and the breaking of the piñata. In India the celebration of Diwali was explored and finally the traveler returned to the United States and greeted Santa and his dancing Christmas Tree! Through music, song and dance a fun and festive time was had by all. The Schoolfield Music program is under the direction of Ms. Abigail Todd. Schoolfield students also participated in the Danville Christmas Parade and performed at the annual tree lighting ceremony at Ballou Park.

“MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM MY HOUSE TO YOURS FROM HEARTSTRINGS” “Tis the season to be jolly Fa la la la la”, “Have yourself a Merry lil Christmas” or “How about “We wish you a Merry Christmas” and we can’t forget “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas.” These are all very common Christmas songs that we begin hearing everywhere we go or turn immediately after Thanksgiving. Notice how each of these mention some sort of merriment in the title. While most think of Christmas as being a time of happiness, joy, peace, love, and good cheer, there are many others that dread the holidays. It is difficult at best for some to understand why anyone would feel anything but JOYFUL at this time of year. But this is a sad reality in our world today. Many will gather with loved ones and friends to celebrate this wonderful season, while many will experience the sadness of the season. Why? After asking a few of my friends this question, here were some of the reasons I encountered. “Loneliness” was one that was mentioned several times. The feeling of being left alone could have been brought on due to a death and missing that person/s immensely. Perhaps a divorce could have taken place breaking apart the family leaving a person feeling empty and lonely. When I think of loneliness I can’t help but think of those elderly persons who are forgotten about in convalescent homes everywhere. Maybe they have no one left to visit them or maybe their loved ones have simply just ”forgotten” about them totally. This is heart breaking for me. “Financial hardship” was another mentioned reason for sadness during the holiday season. The lack of funds and not being able to BUY gifts for those on their list is extremely hard to cope with for these persons. Struggling to keep a roof over ones head and having food on the table is tough enough for many on a daily basis. Then when the holidays come around and there is no extra money to buy gifts, it allows an opportunity for depression to set it. If only they could realize that the best gift is not a present with a bow on it, but more important ones presence and time is what counts. The “melancholiness” of all the “yesterdays” that will no longer be or the reminiscing of the way things used to be and aren’t anymore is yet another reason to slip into a state of gloominess during the holidays. Yes it may be difficult to move past the good times of yesterday but what’s more important is to anxiously await all the good things that the future holds. As the saying goes, “Yesterday is gone, today is NOW so live it to its fullest and may your tomorrows be filled with HOPE for a brand new day.” Then we have the unexplainable events like that in Newtown, Connecticut, which have created a DEEP sense of sadness for those families who lost a loved one senselessly. This has not only affected Newtown, but the world as well. Being an educator, this tragedy has hit close to home and left me and other educators with a feeling of anguish at this time of year. To know that Christmas or any day for that matter, will never be the same, leaves a void in many hearts as we mourn for those families. The best gift that we can offer them is our prayers in hopes of easing their loss at this time. The last reason I want to share is many just don’t want to feel happy at this time of year. Perhaps bitterness and unforgiveness have settled into their hearts and nothing or no one is able to bring joy into their lives anymore. This reason pained my heart just thinking that these people would rather forget about the holidays period as I listened to one person tell me, “So what’s so good about this time of year anyway?” This may sound like a bleak column thus far, but the truth is that I never really stopped to think about this time of year as being anything but HAPPY! I am personally blessed to have a large family and many friends with whom I celebrate the holidays. It is easy for me to overlook the fact there are those who are not in my shoes and see it in quite the opposite way. As I pondered on those who are less that Merry, I began to think of ways that I/we could reach out to those who need some cheer in their lives. Here are a couple of ideas I have come up with. At work we were given an opportunity to “adopt” a less fortunate child and buy a gift for them. I had the opportunity to meet this young lady and seeing her face light up as she opened her gift of pjs and a warm jacket brought joy to my heart. Think about “adopting” a child or family in your community and provide some necessary items that we take for granted. It will bring such a feeling of contentment if you do this. This afternoon I will accompany my granddaughter and the school chorus as they visit a convalescent home and sing a few Christmas carols for them. As they sing, I will sit a few minutes with the elderly and help spread the joy of the season. I have done this in the past and each time have left feeling fulfilled as I saw so many smiles as they enjoyed the singing. Picking up a few extra groceries for a family who has little to eat and dropping them off can relieve the stress of not having food. Having a special meal on Christmas can brighten their day as well as yours. In closing I’d like to wish each of you a VERY MERRY “CHRIST”MAS and a HAPPY New Year. SQUASH CASSEROLE 3 cups squash cooked 1 medium onion 1 stick butter 1/2 bag stuffing mix 1 can cream of chicken soup 1 2 oz. jar pimento’s 1 8 oz. container sour cream salt and pepper to taste Cook squash and onion together until tender. Drain. Mix them with some of the stuffing mix and then with the remaining ingredients. Put in a casserole dish and top with remaining stuffing. Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes.
STRAWBERRY CAKE WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING Cake: 1 pkg plain white cake mix 1 pkg strawberry gelatin 1 cup mashed strawberries with juice 1 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup whole milk 4 large eggs Frosting: 1 pkg (8oz) cream cheese 1 stick of butter 3 1/2 cups confectioner’s sugar 3/4 cup mashed strawberries (drained) Preheat oven to 350°F degrees. Lightly grease three 9 inch round pans. Set pans aside. Place cake mix, strawberry gelatin, mashed strawberries, oil, milk, and eggs in large mixing bowl and beat on low speed for 1 minute. Strawberries should be well-blended. Divide batter among pans and place in oven. Bake cakes until lightly brown (about 28-30 minutes). Remove from oven and allow to cool for 40 minutes. Prepare frosting: Combine cream cheese, and butter and mix on low speed for a minute. Add sugar and strawberries. Blend frosting on low until sugar is incorporated.
DAD’S ICE TEA 4 tea bags 3 - 4 cups boiling water cold water 1 c. sugar 1/4 c. lemon juice 1 fresh orange 1 fresh lemon Makes one 2 litre pitcher. Pour boiling water over tea bags. Let sit for about 4 minutes. Pour in a bit of cold water, then squeeze out the tea bags, and remove. Add sugar and lemon juice. Mix well until sugar dissolves. Add enough cold water to almost fill pitcher. (leave about 1 inch room at top of pitcher) Cut one orange in 1/2 and squeeze juice into tea, as well as one lemon. Slice squeezed parts of orange and lemon and put into tea. Let sit overnight. Stir before serving.
QUICK & EASY YEAST ROLLS 1 pkg. active dry yeast 3/4 c. warm water (105 to 115°F) 2 tbsp. sugar 2 tbsp. vegetable oil 1/2 tsp. salt 1 egg 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 c. flour Soft butter Dissolve yeast in water in 2 1/2 quart bowl. Add sugar, oil, salt and egg. Stir to dissolve sugar and salt. Stir in 1 cup of the flour until smooth. Cover with cloth and let rise 15 minutes or doubled. Grease square pan, 9 x 9 x 2 inches. Stir down batter and add 1 1/2 cups flour. Stir until mixed and turn out onto a lightly floured work surface. Knead for 3 minutes. If the dough is too sticky, knead in up to 1/2 cup of extra flour. Keep in mind that the less flour used, the lighter the rolls will be! Divide dough and shape into balls; arrange in pan. Cover and let rise until fully doubled in size (about 25 minutes or more).
