Betty Oakes Hyler
Betty Oakes Hyler, age 70 of 203 Robin Dr., Danville p a s s e d away Monday, August 29, 2016 at Hospice Home of Rockingham County. She was born November 28, 1945 in Danville, VA to the late William Henry Oakes and Ruth Gibson Oakes. Mrs. Hyler was married to the late James Edward Hyler, Sr. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Christian Church in Callands, VA. Betty worked at Craddock Terry Shoe Factory prior to her retirement. Mrs. Hyler is survived by two sisters, Linda Oakes Shelton and husband John of Chatham, VA and Edna Davis of Newport News, VA: three stepchildren, Danny Hyler and wife Donna, Donald Hyler and wife Lynnette and James Hyler: five grandchildren: six great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and the love of her life, her pet cat Susie Q. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by four brothers, Billy, Turner, Shirley and Jack Oakes and five sisters, Marie McGuire, twin sister: Jetty Lewis, Mary Hedrick, Becky Oakes and Kate Adkins. A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Joe Durham officiating. He was a member of the Central Blvd. Church of God. Mr. Bowman is survived by his daughters, Barbara Gaskins and husband Matt of Florence, S.C., and Diane Howell and husband Terry of Lamar, S.C.; and his grandson, Harrison Gaskins; and step granddaughter, Ashley Johnson. Reverend Monroe Spencer Horne, age 89, of 2608 19th Avenue, Valley Alabama, p a s s e d away on August 31, 2016 at his home. He had been in declining health for a few years. Rev. Horne was born on November 11, 1926, in Washington County, Virginia, to the late David Vance Horne and Mamie Ingalls Horne. He served as a Church of God Minister until his retirement. He served churches in Virginia, Michigan, Kentucky, Alabama and many other areas. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II. Rev. “The View From The End Of Rebel Road
He is a wide eyed, freshly minted rebel, this dear young sinner that I am burdened for and praying over. Like the Prodigal Son of Luke 15, he has become enamored of the bright lights and partying sounds of the far country, and is just now beginning to make his way down Rebel Road heading that direction. He despises the “restrictiveness” of the father’s house, and sees only good times ahead as he leaves it. I have seen many like him through the years. The beginning of Rebel Road is most always a pleasant, easy path. The wind is at one’s back, the sun is shining, and the face of the one walking that way is smiling from ear to ear. And for a while longer, usually,
every indication is that the way and the destination will forever be pleasant. The devil, you see, is good at his job. And he knows that if the one starting on that road could see the end results of that decision, he would likely run back to safety as fast as his legs could carry him.
his way, he would never again be told what to do. But at the end of that road, it was the very one in whose lap he laid his head that first began to afflict him. Delilah drew first blood. Samson was mocked, his eyes were put out, his freedom was taken, and he died with the Philistines.
And thus it is that, the one thing that could prevent that journey from ever beginning, is kept carefully hidden.
David traveled that road. The sweet psalmist of Israel, the Goliath slayer, committed adultery. She got pregnant, and then to cover his sin, David murdered her husband. David ended up a broken man, with a ruined family, a venereal disease, and a blot on his name that remains to this day.
There are quite a few people in Scripture who went that way. They all have a commonality: it did not end well. Samson traveled Rebel Road, he was one of the most famous to do so. The road began with parties and women and games. His parents protested, and his answer was “she pleaseth me well.” Whatever felt good to his flesh, Samson pursued it. He would have his freedom, he would do things
The Prodigal went down Rebel Road as well. He partied, he devoured the father’s living with harlots, his sin grew so great that even way back home, in a day before any electronic communications, everyone knew ex-
actly what he was doing. But then the famine came. The boy found himself taking employment feeding hogs. None of his partying friends were there to feed and house him; he was broke, and of no more use to them. Worse still, even his employer abused him. This wealthy landowner with multiple fields, flocks, servants, and provisions, apparently did not pay the boy. He was reduced to begging for hog slop, and even that was refused him. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Proverbs 13:15 says, “Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard.” Every budding rebellious sinner should do them-
selves a favor. Go find someone who has been sold out to sin for a very long time, and see how that has worked out for them. Go check out what things look like at the end of Rebel Road, once the bright lights have faded and the parties died down. It is normally not a very pretty sight. As a pastor, I have seen the end of both roads many times. I have seen sinners grow old before their time, experience the brokenness of sin, and look back on a life of loss with bitter regret. I have also been at the bedside of dying saints, with family gathered around, smiling and singing a hymn and then calmly slipping into the very presence of Jesus. It is a stark, stark contrast. Are you looking with longing at Rebel Road? Check out what things look like at the end of it before you start that way.

Depending where we live, we might get colder temperatures than last year, or more snow but warmer temperatures, or lots of rain but cold weather ... the possibilities are all over the place. There’s nothing to do but be ready for the worst. Remembering the facts of September 11, 2001
This fall, the world will gather once again to commemorate the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Fifteen years have passed since the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, and many people in New York City, Washington, D.C., southwestern Pennsylvania, and across the globe are still coping with the aftermath of those attacks. Misinformation and conspiracy theories about 9/11 are still circulating today. But it’s important that people know how to distinguish fact from fiction. • The attacks of 9/11 were carried out by 19 men who hijacked four fuel-loaded American commercial airline jets that were bound for destinations on the west coast. These individuals were militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. Three planes reached their targets. The fourth crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. • The first point of impact was the World Trade Center’s North Tower located in downtown New York City. American Airlines Boeing 767 left a gaping, burning hole in floors 93 through 99 at 8:45 a.m. Many people were killed instantly, and hundreds more were trapped on floors above the 99th floor. The plane crash was initially thought to be an accident. However, when a second Boeing 767 crashed into the South Tower shortly after the first crash, it became apparent that America was under attack and the first crash was no accident. • This was not the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. A bombing occurred in 1993 in the building’s parking garage, killing six people. However, the events of 9/11 have since been deemed the worst terrorist attack on American soil. • According to DoSomething.org, on a given work day, up to 50,000 employees worked in the Twin Towers, and an additional 40,000 people (including tourists) passed through the complex and underground shopping mall. • Hijackers aboard Flight 77 that departed from Dulles International Airport crashed that Boeing 757 into the western facade of the Pentagon building at 9:37 a.m. Fifty-nine people aboard the plane and 125 military and civilian personnel inside the Pentagon lost their lives. • According to History.com, after passengers and crew members aboard hijacked Flight 93 contacted friends and family and learned about the attacks in New York and Washington, they attempted to retake the plane. In response, hijackers deliberately crashed the plane into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing all 40 passengers and crew aboard. • Amid rumors that other high-profile buildings were being targeted, by 10 a.m. the Federal Aviation Administration grounded all flights over or bound for the continental United States. Various buildings were evacuated as well. • The South Tower collapsed at 9:59 a.m. and the North Tower collapsed at 10:28 a.m. CNN reports that 2,753 were killed in lower Manhattan alone. • Only 18 people were rescued from the WTC rubble. Many victims were never identified, even after intense DNA analysis of remains.

Who Let This Veteran Down? There’s a story out there that’s given me a chill that just won’t go away. An elderly veteran reportedly presented himself at a Department of Veterans Affairs hospital emergency room in New York to get mental-health help, and he was turned away. He went out to his car in the parking lot and committed suicide. A wife no longer has her husband, three daughters no longer have their father, and seven grandchildren no longer have their grandpa. Because it happened on federal property, the FBI is involved. Ideally they’ll get to the bottom of who turned this man away. Two congressmen also are involved now, demanding answers. The website for the VA facility says right on the front page: “There is always a caring mental health doctor available 24/7 in our Emergency Room.” Granted, the paragraph is talking about substance abuse, but one would think that a “caring mental health doctor” of any specialty would be able to spend some time
talking to a veteran to assess the problem. What I really hate is that they’re always sorry later, and always say just the right words about being committed to helping veterans, as though it’s a stock phrase they stick into each official statement after a tragedy occurs, but never taking any responsibility. The condolences left on the website of the funeral home will hopefully bring comfort to family members, knowing that so many strangers care. These same condolences should be required reading for those who let this veteran down. Roasted Red Pepper Stuffed Chicken Breasts Ingredients 4 chicken breasts, skinless, boneless, raw (about 6 ounces each) 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 4 ounces regular or low-fat cream cheese 1 medium lemon, juice and zest 1 jar roasted red bell peppers, packed in oil, reserve oil 8 slices Thin Provolone cheese 4 teaspoons ground flax seed 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (whole wheat or Panko) Cooking oil Directions 1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. Spray a glass baking dish with the cooking oil. Place the chicken breast on half of a large sheet of plastic wrap on a cutting board. Fold the plastic wrap over the chicken. Using a meat mallet (or a heavy-bottomed skillet), flatten the breast to about 1/4 inch thick. Remove the plastic. Season chicken on both sides with 1 tablespoon of the Italian seasoning, and 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and black pepper, and the cayenne pepper. 3. Mix the cream cheese with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon of the salt and pepper. Remove the zest from the lemon and mix it into the cream cheese. Squeeze the lemon juice into a small bowl. Mix in the reserved oil from the roasted red bell pepper (or use 3 tablespoons of olive oil) and set it aside. 4. Spread the cream cheese mixture across the inside of the breast. Layer two slices of the provolone, then the roasted red pepper. Beginning at the smallest end, roll the breast up, tucking in the peppers as needed. Roll the chicken in the lemon and oil mixture. 5. Mix together the remaining 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning, the ground flax seeds and the breadcrumbs. Sprinkle the chicken with the breadcrumb mixture. Place the chicken roll, seam side down, in the baking dish. No toothpicks are needed. Repeat the layering and rolling process with the remaining chicken. 6. Drizzle any remaining lemon and oil over the chicken to help it brown and crisp on top. Bake until chicken is cooked through (about 25 to 30 minutes) and no pink flesh remains. Makes 4 servings.
