Christopher Tyrone Bennett
Christopher Tyrone Bennett, 40, of 216 Church St., Danville, Va. died Wednesday, August 17, 2016. He was born August 2, 1976 in Danville to Brenda Logan Terry and Jesse Bennett. Christopher earned his GED and worked as a carpenter. He was a member of Celestial Deliverance Church. Survivors include mother, Evangelist Brenda and Elder Willie Terry; father, Jesse Lee Bennett; brother, Justin Calloway; sisters, Camesha Baig and Min. Taneka Childress (Rashon Childress); and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Norris Funeral Services, Mt. Hermon Chapel, 3995 Franklin Tpke., Danville, Va., who is respectfully serving the Bennett family.
Roy Ray Britt, Sr.
Roy Ray Britt, Sr., 59, of 449 Oakland Drive, Danville, Va. passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016 at his residence. He was born December 27, 1956 in Danville to the late Effie Allen Britt and the late Roy C. Britt. Mr. Britt is survived by his wife, Lorna Jean Britt. He retired from United Parcel Service, following 35 years of service as a delivery driver; Mr. Britt also worked in maintenance prior to retirement. He was a member of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons where he served as a Master Mason. Mr. Britt was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to his wife, Mr. Britt is survived by his son Roy Ray Britt, Jr. of the residence; his stepson, Richard Jay Ennis, and fiancée Rachel of Danville, Va. as well as a host of family and friends. The family will receive friends Monday, August 29, 2016 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services, Mt. Hermon Chapel, and at other times at the residence. Bobby Lee Powell, 78, of 1508 Glenn St, Danville, VA, died on Monday, August 22, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after being in declining health for several years. Mr. Powell was born in Danville, VA on October 10, 1937 son of the late Rufus Thomas Powell and the late Virginia Dare Rudd Powel. He worked as a carpenter for Powell Contractors until his retirement. He served as President of the former React C. B. Club of Danville. He was a volunteer for the March of Dimes Fund Raisers. He was of the Baptist Faith. On April 4, 1957 she married Bernita Waldschmidt Powell who survives. In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Ronnie L. Powell, of Danville, VA; a grandson, George McCall and wife Lisa, of McKenney, VA; a granddaughter, Amy Lewis, of Danville, VA; and four great grandchildren. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Norman Ray Powell; and a sister, Frances P. Thomas. Walter Sager Taylor, 92, of Danville, VA died on Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Danville Regional Medical Center after a decline in health for the past two months. Mr. Taylor was born in the Schoolfield Community of Danville, VA on April 29, 1924, son of the late Walter Claude Taylor and the late Joie Howard Taylor. He spent all of his life in the Danville area where he worked as a Mechanic for forty-eight years for Swanson Motor Company. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1097 and he was a charter member of the Emmanuel Church of the Brethren. On December 25, 1950, he married Frances Dillon Taylor, who died on July 16, 2013. In addition to his parents and wife he was predeceased by two sisters, Jackie T. Ferguson and Iris Taylor Hawker. He is survived by his sister, Faye Taylor Murdock and husband William C. Murdock; a niece, Donna C. Ferguson and husband Harold G. Moran; a great niece, Joie L. Robinson; a greatgreat nephew, Kyle E. Mascetti; and two great-great nieces, BreAnne E. Mascetti and Olivia T. Mr. Ted Ray Chilton, age 83, of 111 Rosewood Lane, Danville, VA, passed away on August 23, 2016 at his home. Mr. Chilton was born on March 22, 1933, in Danville, VA, to the late James T. Chilton and Bessie Axsom Chilton. He worked at Dan River Mills, Inc., as a loom fixer and was of the Baptist faith. He spent most of his life in the Schoolfield area. He had been in declining health for three years. His favorite hobbies were remodeling and carpentry. Mr. Chilton loved his family and he loved life to the fullest. Celebrate Working Men And Women
Labor Day is a bit of a misnomer. While it may seem like a day devoted to work, many workers in the United States and Canada don’t work at all on Labor Day. Labor Day is much more than the unofficial end to summer. Labor Day weekend tends to be the last big travel weekend before the holiday season, benefitting towns and businesses that cater to tourists. But while road trips and backyard barbecues are now staples of Labor Day, the origins of the holiday bear little resemblance to the celebrations of today. Labor Day in the United States dates back to the 19th century, though its origins are still debated by historians. According to the United States Department of Labor, recent
research supports the idea that Labor Day was the brainchild of machinist Matthew Maguire, who supposedly devised the idea in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. Others attribute the holiday to Peter J. McGuire, a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor and general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. Historians say the first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York. This was based on plans from Maguire’s Central Labor Union. Other states and cities would eventually adopt the first Monday in September as Labor Day. As labor unions grew, other cities started celebrating Labor Day, which McGuire suggested should be a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” Soon the popularity of Labor Day grew and recognition by the government followed. By 1885, municipal ordinances recognizing Labor Day had been passed, and they inspired state legislation. While Labor Day was first celebrated in New York, in 1887 the state of Oregon became the first state to officially pass a law recognizing the first Monday of September as Labor Day. New York, along with Colorado, Massachusetts and New Jersey, implemented Labor Day observations soon after. On June 28, 1894, Congress officially passed an act that declared the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday. This applied to all states as well as the District of Columbia. Labour Day also is celebrated on the first Monday of September in Canada, where the day celebrates workers and the labor union movement. It’s important for people living in North America to recognize both the significance and the history of Labor Day, which is about far more than backyard barbecues and the last of summer jaunts to the beach.

BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches Ingredients 5 pounds boneless pork butt, cut into 2-inch chunks 2 large onions, sliced 1 jar (16 ounces) Pace Chunky Salsa, or pineapplemango or similar salsa 1 1/2 cups water 1 bottle (16 ounces) barbecue sauce 1/4 cup apple-cider vinegar 2 tablespoons prepared mustard 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon salt 24 hamburger buns Instructions 1. Place half the onions in the crockpot. Add the meat and then the rest of the onions. Pour the salsa and the water over the pork and the onions. 2. Turn the crockpot to the HIGH setting for 4 to 5 hours or on the LOW setting for 7 to 9 hours or until the pork is tender and can be shredded easily with a fork. 3. Remove the pork and onions from the crockpot and discard any of the remaining liquid and accumulated fat. Let the meat cool slightly. Shred the pork, using two forks. Mix together the barbeque sauce, vinegar, mustard, brown sugar and salt until well-combined. 4. Mix the shredded pork and onions with the barbeque sauce. Return the barbequed pork to the crockpot and cook on HIGH for another hour. Serve about 1/2 cup shredded pork in each roll. Top with coleslaw, if desired. Serves 24.
